Thank you in advance for your support and engagement in this process for this incredible cohort.
Further information regarding these events was sent home to parents via Mrs Anna Marie Rolon, Dean of Studies 7-10, this week. A summary is included below.

Following this presentation, parents and students are invited to move to the Learning Hub for the Subject Walk’n’Talk where each department will be available in designated classrooms across Levels 1, 2 and 3 to answer specific questions relating to their area of speciality. At 6:30pm, students and parents from Roseby and McDouall will have to sign in on Level 1 of the Learning Hub and make their way up to Redlands Hall to hear the presentation followed by the Subject Walk/n’Talk in the Learning Hub. What are prerequisites and assumed knowledge? What is university really like?
Yr 10 Half-Yearly Examinations Return
Students prepared for, performed and completed their first Half-Yearly Examination Block with success. Students were on time each day, prepared for the day’s events and seemed to be keeping a healthy balance of study and breaks. Students made use of the library for study time and seemed to appreciate the flexibility and ownership over their study schedule with the modified school days.
As students prepare for their senior years, academic reflection and exam revision is essential to learn from mistakes and plan for further success. Dr Prue Salter suggests students do the following when examinations are returned over these next few weeks:
- Check your marks
- Celebrate the things you got right
- Learn the content for questions you got wrong
- Ask your teacher for help or guidance around things you still do not understand
- Reflect on your study process, preparation, strategy and exam technique
- If you didn’t do as well as you were hoping, consider what factors contributed to this outcome
- Kaizen
- Kaizen is all about ‘continuous improvement.’ The word Kaizen itself is derived from two different Japanese words, ‘kai’ and ‘zen’. KAI, meaning: to change or modify; and ZEN, meaning: to improve. When these two words are brought together, the meaning becomes gradual, orderly and continuous improvement. Just doing everything that little bit better each time, putting in that little bit more effort and looking for smarter ways to do things.

Reflect, Connect and Align Day Overview
Yr 10 rounded out their week of Half-Yearly Examinations with an incredible effort engaging in the Recent Alumni and Yr 11 & 12 Student Panel for Yr 10 Subject Selection, using quiet time to individually reflect on their preparation and subsequent performance in the Half-Yearly Exam Block and using their positive and open-mindset for connecting with one another through the physical Knot Challenge and Speed Conversations. Students were also asked to consider the importance of this moment in preparation for Yr 11 and 12 expectations. They were asked to plan backwards, to picture themselves as senior leaders and to consider their current strengths and areas for growth in the classroom and especially as a classmate, peer and role-model within the cohort and student body. While this year is full of incredible experiences and pivotal moments, the true testament to this cohort’s character will be how they move beyond the Half-Yearly Examination Block and Subject Selection Process with continued focus into Yr 11.
A few Yr 10 quotations from the day…
“Can we do this after every examination?
“We need more time for things like this.”
“It’s nice having some time to connect with one another outside the classroom.”
“Today was fun.”
Words of advice from recent alumni…
“Do what you love, don’t do it for the ATAR or because your friends do it.”
” It’s two years of your life, enjoy it and get involved.”
Man Cave
This term, we have organised for Man Cave to present to our male students on Wednesday 15 June to support young men in having healthy relationships, to reach their full potential and to contribute to their community. The program offers a safe space to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities of masculinity for young people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
The Man Cave is
“… a preventative mental health and emotional intelligence charity that empowers boys to become great men. [We] exist because suicide is the leading cause of death for men aged 15-44. It’s not car crashes, drug overdoses or coward punches. The biggest killer of young men is themselves. Not only that, more than 1 woman dies every week at the hands of a man and most of the time this is a man they’re close with, someone they trust. After working with over 24,000 boys across the country, [we] fundamentally believe that these statistics are preventable through early intervention programs that focus on boys strengths rather than their deficits.”

We are currently organising a similar experience for female students at a later date this year. Please notify me at aynson@redlands.com.au if you would like to further discuss your child’s involvement in this program.
Oxford University Computing Competition

This competition builds on the principles used in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) and helps students develop their skills further to produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems.
