Issue 15 2022 Term 2 Week 5 - 26 May 2022

From The Principal

The Redlands Science and Innovation Luncheon held last Friday at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron was a most inspiring event. The panel of Redlander guest speakers, Dr Sue Morey AM (1959), Prof Diana Horvath AO (1961), Dr Linda Beeren (1999) and Joshua Rohan-Gould (2016) wonderfully illuminated how science and being bold with innovative ideas enabled them to make significant progress in their respective fields. The comment that ‘sometimes you just need to hold your nose and jump’, when seeking a breakthrough with a challenging problem, conveyed the courage and fortitude required in overcoming obstacles. The event has so far raised over $40,000 for the establishment of the Dr Sue Morey AM means-tested scholarship, which is a fantastic result. To gather as a cross section of members of our school community was a highlight and my sincere thanks to the Community Engagement team for their work in making it such an enjoyable event.

It has been a pleasure to have Dr Tessa Opie visit the School again this week to run workshops and presentations for Years 6, 11 and 12 as part of our Relationships and Sexuality Education program. Dr Opie also ran a parent workshop on Monday night which drew a large audience, especially considering the weather! Workshops are planned for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 later this year and Dr Opie is working with staff in a train the trainer capacity as we build internal expertise in this most important area. The partnership also involves supporting program review right across the School (P-12). Students from P-5 will not have a direct workshop with Dr Opie; however, classroom teachers and PDHPE teachers deliver age and stage appropriate content, with a key focus on protective behaviours at all levels. Feedback from the students this week has been extremely positive and illuminated the importance of open communication and respect in all relationships.

Congratulations to our very large team of 91 students who represented Redlands at the ISA Cross Country Carnival yesterday. Our Senior Girls won the Senior Girls Shield and our Boys placed 3rd Overall. I also congratulate our Junior School Cross Country team on their success at the HICES Carnival held at Bathurst on Tuesday. They placed 2nd Overall and 13 students have been selected to represent HICES at the NSWCIS Carnival next month. Well done to all our runners on their exceptional achievements! For further details, please see the Secondary School, Secondary Sport, Junior School and Junior Sport sections of Note Day.

Community Update

The Redlands community spirit was on full display late last week as we were able to gather together in celebration and acknowledgement of the School’s distinguished history of science and innovation at the Redlands Science and Innovation Luncheon.  We were blessed with an extraordinary panel of speakers from our alumni who spoke passionately about their experiences and ground breaking achievements, all stitched together by our effervescent Masters of Ceremonies. Thank you to those members of our community who so generously supported this event through the donation of prizes and sponsorship, and of course we are most grateful to those who kindly gave in the form of their time, raffles, donations and auction bids. With your support we have raised over $40,000 towards the means-tested Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship. For more information and photos of the Science and Innovation Lunch, please visit our Foundation section.

This week we welcomed back Dr Tessa Opie from ‘In Your Skin: Relationships and Sexuality Education’, who presented another engaging information session for Redlands parents and carers on ‘Respectful Relationships Education: At School and in the Home’. Dr Opie continues to partner with us as we further develop and implement our relationships, consent and sexuality education programs across the School.

Our Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) continue to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life. A number of community events still remain in the calendar for Term 2 and these can be found here.

Save the Date – we are delighted to announce that the School will be hosting our traditional Spring Fair on Saturday 3 September. We will share further details of this much loved Redlands community event as the year unfolds.

Thank you to those parents that I met at events and while I was out and about this week for sharing your time and feedback with me.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands Science and Innovation Luncheon – Thank You

Thank you to everyone in our Redlands Community who attended this event or contributed so far to this important initiative. With your support we raised just over $40,000 at the Luncheon towards the means-tested Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship. Dr Morey joined three other outstanding alumni panellists: Professor Diana Horvath AO, neuroscientist Dr Lisa Beeren (Redlander 1999) who is currently Head of Technology Operations at FB, a clean technology innovation powerhouse that accelerates access to low-cost, large-scale solar energy, and Joshua Rohan-Gould (Redlander 2016) a Space Analyst at Saber Astronautics. We  thank them all for a highly entertaining and inspiring discussion.

There were many important messages shared by the panel and those I have shared with my children are to follow your passions, try new things and start with small things to make an impact – all relevant to any stage of life we are in.

We would also like to thank our Alumni Volunteers who assisted with the event on the day: Isabel Simpson who co-hosted the event with Dean of Activities Jonathon Gray, Lauren Weaver (Vocal Performer, Redlander 2021), Yasmin Gupta (Hockey Captain 2020), Lauri Sidoti (Service Captain 2021), and Jan Vencalek (Redlander 2016).

Special thank you to all our sponsors and prize donors. We are grateful for your continuous support!

A fabulous photo gallery from the event can be viewed HERE.

Collections

(Almost) final call for Light for Lismore

Collections of stationery and craft supplies will continue for one more week until Fri 3 Jun. Thank you to everyone who has already donated items. Through this collection, we are helping to support 170 registered educators and around 2,000 children per week. Without these educators, there is no care for these children, while their parents work and try to rebuild their lives after losing everything.

Our Prep and Junior School children are decorating boxes for each of the educators and writing letters of hope to their peers in Lismore. Let’s help to fill up these boxes with as many requested items as possible. Craft supplies such as scissors, dough kits, palettes, beads, pom poms, tissue paper and string are especially needed in addition to any of the items on the list below (click image to enlarge). Please donate items in Redlands House and Prep receptions areas and Junior School classrooms.

Worn Up Uniform Recycling

As part of our sustainability efforts, Redlands has partnered with Worn Up with the aim of diverting old school uniforms from landfill to be upcycled into new products. The RPFA will be collecting old Redlands branded uniforms that are not suitable for the second hand uniform sale from Wed 1 Jun to Wed 8 Jun, with collection bins located in the Prep, Junior and Secondary School receptions. Please do not send in current uniforms in good condition, which can be donated in Term 3, or non-Redlands branded items, as the RPFA has limited storage space and volunteers to sort through the items.

Head of Secondary School

Students have been engaged in all manner of events, activities and learning this week on the Senior Campus. From learning about Healthy Relationships with Dr Tessa Opie of InYourSkin, to engaging in a Reflect, Connect and Align Day, to completing NAPLAN catch-ups, to winning at Netball (or putting up a good fight, at the very least) – the students have been energetically pursuing their passions. Our Yr 10 students all passed their Reading and Numeracy Minimum Standards Test and we are confident that their Writing scores will also be high.

Yr 10 HSC and IB Senior Studies Pathway Information Forum and Subject Walk’n’Talk is being held next Wednesday 1 June. We strongly encourage all Yr 10 students and their parents/carers to attend.

  • Cowper and Dumolo commences at 5.30pm
  • Roseby and McDouall commences at 6.30pm

Expect to commit 1.5 hours listening to key voices and learning about the variety of subjects on offer at Redlands.

Further, the Sydney University and UAC Subject Selection Information Evening is to be held the following week on Monday 6 June from 6.00pm in Dunnet Hall. Light refreshment swill be served from 5.30pm.

Both evenings are aimed at students and parents and it is highly recommended that you attend these so that you may support your children in their academic pathways for Yrs 11 and 12.

Cross Country Success

Redlands won the Senior Girls Shield and the boys gained 3rd place overall in the ISA Cross Country yesterday. Max Rawlinson, and Olivia Vigneault (Athletics and Cross Country Captains ) were so happy to be able to return from the event and present the Shield with Mr Walker! Apparently the students endured tough conditions but were victorious. Finn Gurney placed 2nd in the 12s and Isaac Brooks finished 3rd in the 16 years boys. There were lots of top 10 places and teams through to CIS! Below are some images of our Athletics and Cross Country participants.

Student Leader Messages

Over the past couple of weeks, our student leaders have spoken to all year groups at assembly. Not only has it been wonderful being able to bring cohorts and year groups together again for in-person assemblies, it’s brought a sense of normalcy that we all need right now. The Yr 12 student leaders being able to directly talk to, and engage, the younger year groups in-person is how it should be! Here is a short video of their message to students about wearing the correct uniform. Note the star appearance of the Redlands Rhino, who has also been attending assemblies, doing gate duty and visiting tutor periods. The Redlands Rhino is on her way to gaining a Prefect’s Award this year.

Uniform – Students Wear House Colours to the Swimming Carnival

Swimmers – Appropriate swimwear is to be worn in the pool. Goggles and swim caps are to be worn for races.

Dress – All students should dress in their house colours. At a minimum, students should wear an appropriate top in their House colour.

UAC Presentation

This presentation for Yr 12 and 11 students and parents was held in Redlands Hall on Wednesday evening. A representative from UAC provided a thorough and informative presentation about the university Admissions Centre, the ATAR, university applications and the various support mechanisms to assist tertiary entry. It was great to see so many Stage 6 students, from both the HSC and IB, present, with their parents. On Monday 6 June, a separate UAC presentation for Yr 10 students and their families will take place in Dunnet Hall. This presentation will cater to students engaged in the subject selection process and who are yet to embark on their Stage 6 studies. We strongly encourage all Yr 10 students and their parents to attend. Please click here to register.

Sage Advice from the Class of 2021

Last week, Yr 10 had the pleasure of hearing from three alumni and three Yr 12 students, as part of their journey towards Stage 6 subject selection. Dillon Hayford, 2021 Sports Captain, spoke wisely and encouragingly to the Class of 2024. I thought you might be interested in his advice, which students (and parents) in Yr 11 and 12, might also find valuable.

My name is Dillon, and some of you may remember me as your previous Sports Captain. I graduated in last year’s IB cohort and I am currently studying a double commerce/advanced studies degree at the University of Sydney.

I decided to study commerce as I felt it had a good balance between math and business, my two favourite subjects in Yr 11 and 12. However, studying at university is different to how you study subjects in high school. At high school you study all the disciplines of a particular subject. What’s really different about university is that you are able to choose the specific disciplines of a particular subject that appeal to you the most. Commerce felt like the right course for me as I was able to select majors in what were my two favourite topics in business studies in secondary school: marketing and innovation and entrepreneurship.

Advanced studies is the second element of my degree, where I will choose any topic of interest, whether it be media or computer science. I will take my advanced studies units in the last year of my degree. I chose advanced studies to explore something outside of the business world and to develop myself as a well-rounded individual.

I would never have thought in Yr 10 that I’d study commerce after school, as I am not motivated by areas of study such as finance and accounting. Whilst I am required to study core units that briefly cover these topics, the majority of my study is in the two disciplines that motivate me and give me purpose: marketing and entrepreneurship. It is important to understand this is how studying at university works. There is far more freedom in what you choose to study and from my experience, it is far more focused and tailored toward your specific interests.

I chose to study at the University of Sydney as it was close to home, has great sporting facilities, has awesome exchange programs and offered the course I was most interested in pursuing. Studying from home is always going to be a different experience from studying at college. I was always a party goer, so it came to a surprise to many of my friends I opted out of the college life experience. However, I felt studying at Sydney University provided the best opportunities for me to achieve my personal goals and offered a great social, work and academic balance.

The advice I would give to my Yr 10 self would be:

  • To think critically about the subjects, you have enjoyed the past four years. The subjects you choose are what you will spend your time doing. Higher level subjects are not necessarily harder, but rather have an increased workload and require more hours. Hence, worry less about what will look appealing for universities or ‘scale well’, and more about how you can make your Yr 11 and 12 studies memorable, interesting and beneficial.
  • I’d tell myself to think forward about where I want to be in the future and consider what gives me purpose. I would advise myself to invest my time in learning specific skills that will help me reach my goals. Whilst being a well-rounded individual is essential, it’s important to invest more of your time in subjects that will develop the skills and knowledge needed to achieve your goals.
  • And there are no shortcuts! You are at the stage in life where you need to start holding yourself accountable. Actions truly have consequences, and hard work compounds. Choosing subjects because they are easy and comfortable only holds you back from your true potential. Look to seek discomfort and push yourself.

In Yr 10, 11 or 12, did you have a clear idea of what career you wanted to pursue?

No, I was unsure even once I graduated. It is not an easy decision to make, so don’t expect it to be clear. Don’t expect it to be set in stone – be open to change. It will become more and more clear and you invest more time into your studies and specific subjects in Yr 11 and 12 what you enjoy and are interested in.

What research did you do about your courses?

  • Spoke to careers advisors
  • Researched online -> definitely take the time to do this
  • Spoke with current university students

Did your Stage 6 subject choices matter?

  • Yes, they did matter. My subject choices helped me find my passions. I initially thought I’d be an engineer and I enjoyed maths, however my studies in physics helped me realise my interests lay elsewhere.
  • To study commerce at Sydney University you need to have studied HSC Advanced Maths or IB SL AA Maths. A lot of my friend, stronger than me in maths, chose to study at a lower level because it was easier. Like I said in my last piece of advice, it’s important you hold yourself accountable and push yourself. Pick subjects that align with what you want to achieve, look to push yourself, as the hard work and skills you learn will always pay off.

Planning on travelling or studying overseas?

I wanted to study in the US but it was too expensive and I didn’t get a scholarship offer. I settled at USyd because of its exchange programs and plan on studying a semester or two abroad.

Yr 12 Relationships Day

On Wednesday, Tessa Opie was the keynote speaker to Yr 12 and facilitated the running of workshops on healthy relationships. Prior to this day, all students had been participating in Tutor Group sessions to develop their group norms and have discussions about intimacy and relationships, in preparation for the workshops. The workshops aimed to help the students have open conversations about important values and concepts in relationships, such as consent, respect, boundary settings and individuality. It was powerful to see how mature and thoughtful the students were during these sessions.

Dr Tessa Opie is the founder and director of inyourskin® and is an advocate for healthy and consenting relationships. She has extensive experience in education delivery and training facilitation. Tessa has worked as an educator across the government, not-for-profit, and private sectors, and has ongoing experience as a guest lecturer at various universities.

Tessa’s approach is sex-positive, evidence based, and harm reduction focused. It requires participants to actively consider their relationship values, attitudes, and expectations, in a social climate that feeds us often misleading messages about sex and relationships.

Yr 11 Tessa Opie – Healthy Relationships and Sexuality Presentation

On Wednesday afternoon, Tessa Opie spoke to Yr 11 about respect and consent when it comes to ‘relationships’.

Dr Tessa’s approach is sex-positive, evidence-based, and harm reduction-focused. It requires participants to actively consider their relationship values, attitudes, and expectations, in a social climate that feeds us often misleading messages about sex and relationships.

In her presentation to Yr 11, she highlighted that it’s important to:

  • Celebrate choosing not to have sex
  • Celebrate diversity
  • Understand that we all come here with different personal experiences.
  • Keep ourselves safe.
  • Know where to go to get help if you are worried about sexual health i.e. Family Planning NSW  Talkline (Bodytalk, Sydney Sexual Health Centre)  NSW Pregnancy Choice

The following statistics were mentioned by Dr Tessa regarding young adults and sexual activity:

  • 74% of young adults have experienced some form of sexual activity
  • 47% of teenagers have experienced sexual intercourse
  • Up to 40% of young adults have sent a sexually explicit nude/video of self
  • Up to 51% have received a sexually explicit nude/video
  • 35%  reported sexual attraction
  • 28% of sexually active high school students reported at least one experience of unwanted sex.

Dr Tessa explained that the reasons for the lack of sexual consent are because:

  • Young people have more in common across genders than we have differences.
  • Younger people have greater access to online pornography which has led to: body image issues, increased sexual behaviors, normalisation of non-normative sex acts and earlier sexual intercourse.

Dr Tessa’s advice for Yr 11 when practicing consent is to:

  • Determine your own boundaries around preferred sexual activity
  • Think about how you can actively negotiate sexual activity
  • Think about how you might check-in and practice consent
  • Every time you do anything sexual, you must always have the other persons consent from beginning to end.

Sexual Consent needs to be:

  • Mutual
  • Continuous
  • Required for everything
  • Definite
  • Voluntary
  • Informed
  • Reversible

If you are interested in the work of Dr Tessa Opie, please visit inyourskin.

Yr 10 Half-Yearly Examinations Return

Students prepared for, performed and completed their first Half-Yearly Examination Block with success. Students were on time each day, prepared for the day’s events and seemed to be keeping a healthy balance of study and breaks. Students made use of the library for study time and seemed to appreciate the flexibility and ownership over their study schedule with the modified school days.

As students prepare for their senior years, academic reflection and exam revision is essential to learn from mistakes and plan for further success. Dr Prue Salter suggests students do the following when examinations are returned over these next few weeks:

  • Check your marks
  • Celebrate the things you got right
  • Learn the content for questions you got wrong
  • Ask your teacher for help or guidance around things you still do not understand
  • Reflect on your study process, preparation, strategy and exam technique
  • If you didn’t do as well as you were hoping, consider what factors contributed to this outcome
  • Kaizen
    • Kaizen is all about ‘continuous improvement.’  The word Kaizen itself is derived from two different Japanese words, ‘kai’ and ‘zen’. KAI, meaning: to change or modify; and ZEN, meaning: to improve. When these two words are brought together, the meaning becomes gradual, orderly and continuous improvement. Just doing everything that little bit better each time, putting in that little bit more effort and looking for smarter ways to do things.

Reflect, Connect and Align Day Overview

Yr 10 rounded out their week of Half-Yearly Examinations with an incredible effort engaging in the Recent Alumni and Yr 11 & 12 Student Panel for Yr 10 Subject Selection, using quiet time to individually reflect on their preparation and subsequent performance in the Half-Yearly Exam Block and using their positive and open-mindset for connecting with one another through the physical Knot Challenge and Speed Conversations. Students were also asked to consider the importance of this moment in preparation for Yr 11 and 12 expectations. They were asked to plan backwards, to picture themselves as senior leaders and to consider their current strengths and areas for growth in the classroom and especially as a classmate, peer and role-model within the cohort and student body. While this year is full of incredible experiences and pivotal moments, the true testament to this cohort’s character will be how they move beyond the Half-Yearly Examination Block and Subject Selection Process with continued focus into Yr 11.

A few Yr 10 quotations from the day…

“Can we do this after every examination?

“We need more time for things like this.”

“It’s nice having some time to connect with one another outside the classroom.”

“Today was fun.”

Words of advice from recent alumni…

“Do what you love, don’t do it for the ATAR or because your friends do it.”

” It’s two years of your life, enjoy it and get involved.”

Man Cave

This term, we have organised for Man Cave to present to our male students on Wednesday 15 June to support young men in having healthy relationships, to reach their full potential and to contribute to their community. The program offers a safe space to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities of masculinity for young people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

The Man Cave is

“… a preventative mental health and emotional intelligence charity that empowers boys to become great men. [We] exist because suicide is the leading cause of death for men aged 15-44.  It’s not car crashes, drug overdoses or coward punches. The biggest killer of young men is themselves. Not only that, more than 1 woman dies every week at the hands of a man and most of the time this is a man they’re close with, someone they trust. After working with over 24,000 boys across the country, [we] fundamentally believe that these statistics are preventable through early intervention programs that focus on boys strengths rather than their deficits.”

For more information, see here

We are currently organising a similar experience for female students at a later date this year. Please notify me at aynson@redlands.com.au if you would like to further discuss your child’s involvement in this program.

Burn Bright – Monday 23 May

This week Yr 9 were involved in the Burn Bright incursion. Over the course of the day, students were gender split and the program was geared specifically for each gender.

The focus for the male students was the journey to manhood, designed to challenge traditional concepts of manhood and to help young boys grow into men with strength, integrity, and respect. The program was designed to specifically engage students with new thoughts and positive messages about how they can live happier and more genuine lives. Throughout the day, students engaged in challenging conversations about being a man in the 21st century and explored three important values for growing into a man: strength, integrity, and respect. The girls program looked at how young women can seek to respect themselves and others in their immediate worlds. They were provided with the tools which help students build confidence, positively express themselves, understand their values, cultivate gratitude and perspective, and build their capacity to be resilient. The program aimed to enhance emotional intelligence and empowered students to build positive and healthy relationships with their peers, parents and their community.

Drama

On Monday and Tuesday Night, Yr 9 Curriculum Drama participated in their first live performance evening since COVID-19. Students have been working tirelessly to devise an original, self-devised work in the style of Documentary Drama. Students explored various historic or current issues and events they are passionate about and incorporate the conventions of Epic Theatre, which seeks to establish a non-realistic performance style whilst exploring multiple perspectives on these issues.

Congratulations to all students who presented wonderful pieces of performance work this week – the Yr 9 talent was exceptional!

Yr 8 Study Skills

As part of our Tutor sessions in Term 2, Yr 8 have been focusing on how they can best approach and plan for their assessment tasks. Students have been supported to use a term planner to input their assessment dates, and in workshops the Tutors have run through some key strategies to help students prepare for upcoming tasks. This week, we focused on:

Study Summaries

Follow these steps to make useful summaries:

  1. Look through all material on the topic; your class-notes, worksheets, textbook.

  2. Make a list of the main headings or sections.

  3. Create a mind map overview for the topic.

  4. For each heading, read through the information and highlight the key points.

  5. Write down the key ideas in point form (in your own words if you can!).

  6. Try and put information into lists or tables when you can.

  7. Re-do a particular section if you feel the information is not clearly organised.

To make effective study notes:

  • use point form notes as much as possible, avoid long sentences
  • rephrase the information in your own words
  • only include relevant information
  • make notes neat, legible, easy to read, well set out with a logical structure
  • improve layout with wide margins, different colour and headings, box key points, numbering etc
  • loose leaf sheets are useful as can rewrite sections, add in extra information
  • summarising is a never ending process, keep refining, improving, adding in
  • your summary must be comprehensive and include all information needed
  • mind maps: one page visual overview of the topic

Dr Tessa Opie – ‘Respectful Relationships Education: At School and in the Home’

On Monday 23 May, Dr Opie delivered an information evening on Relationships and Sexuality Education to Redlands parents and carers.

Her approach is sex-positive, evidence-based, and harm reduction-focused. It requires participants to actively consider their relationship values, attitudes, and expectations, in a social climate that feeds us often misleading messages about sex and relationships.

In August, Dr Opie will run a half day workshop for Year 8 students at Redlands. The content of this session will be age appropriate and tailored specifically for each year group in line with our relationships, consent and sexuality education curriculum. Further information regarding the structure and nature of this session will be made available closer to the date.

da Vinci Decathlon

On Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 May a group of Year 7 students took part in the da Vinci Decathlon via Zoom. These students worked exceptionally hard on some very challenging papers. A particular highlight was our Year 7s’ knowledge that they demonstrated on the cartography and legacy papers. Abby Stante, Sam Ashby, Charlie Reeves, Elodie Melvin, Liliana Halfen, Sophia Liu and Samuel Turton are to be congratulated for their enthusiastic participation on Tuesday.

ISA Cross Country

The following students were selected to represent Redlands at the ISA Cross Country Carnival, that occurred yesterday 25 May; Kiara Murphy, Katie Jennings, Eva Blundell, Matilda Carlyon, Tom Brown, Alexander Kraszewski Francia, Daniel Benoliel, Maie Clissa, Alice Franceschi, Amelie Beeton, Finn Gurney, Nicholas Meagher, Daniel Gordon, Matthew Walker, Rowan Petersen, Ava Atkinson and Amelie Dewar.

The carnival was held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park and whilst the rain stayed away the ground was particularly sodden and therefore challenging for athletes. Our Year 7 students ran a 3Km course with Finn Gurney achieving 2nd place and Nick Meagher 8th place in the Under 12 Boys. Overall, the Redlands Girls Team placed 4th and our Boys Team placed 3rd which was an exceptional result for our School.

Healthy Relationships Workshops with Yr 6

On Monday, our Yr 6 students participated in a ‘Healthy Relationships’ workshop morning which was led by DrTessa Opie, a leading expert in this field across Australia.

Over this term and next term, Dr Opie will be visiting the School to conduct a series of workshops and presentations for students in Yrs 6-12. We are pleased that we will continue to build upon the ‘train the trainer’ model which began last year, and all Redlands facilitators take part in training sessions with Dr Opie ahead of time to enhance their skillset and provide them with the skills to best support students during their workshops. Our Yr 6 teachers, PDHPE staff, Dean of Students, School Counsellor also facilitated and attended the sessions and I was able to spend time in each workshop over the course of the morning.

Dr Opie made particular comment on the maturity and engagement of the students in the workshop as well as being highly impressed by their insightful and respectful reflections and perspectives. I know that many parents also joined Dr Opie’s parent session in the evening, which was also well received.

ACER Social-Emotional Wellbeing Survey

This week, students in Yrs 3-6 took part in an anonymous Social-Emotional Wellbeing survey that Secondary School students will also be completing. One of the School’s strategic drivers is to measure the overall wellbeing of students and this short survey will help us to measure the effectiveness of our pastoral care programs and highlight possible social and emotional needs.

Our Deputy Principal, Mr Corcoran, shared the context and purpose of the survey with Junior School students in assembly and we look forward to reviewing the data in due course to guide continued steps forward.

Staffing News

We were thrilled to hear of the safe arrival of a baby girl for PDHPE teacher, Ms Faye Dongas. Mum and daughter are doing well and I know you will join me in sending best wishes to Faye and her family. As Ms Dongas commences maternity leave, we are delighted to welcome Mr Brad Hemopo back to Redlands to take her PDHPE classes for the remainder of the year. Mr Hemopo has taught at Redlands in recent years interspersed with professional rugby stints and has just returned from playing in Japan.

Debating News

Last Friday, our Primary B team were narrowly defeated by St Aloysius College in the quarter-final of the Sydney Debating competition. The team are to be commended for their run to the quarter-finals and they, along with our Primary A team, will now turn their attention to the Australian National Virtual Debating, which has just started this term.

As some families may recall, last year, our Primary A team became National Debating Champions on Speech Day and I know our students will enjoy competing against schools from around Australia in the coming weeks and then return to face-to-face debating in Term 3 against local schools.

HICES Cross Country Carnival

Leaving and returning in darkness, our Redlands Cross Country team enjoyed success at this year’s Heads of Independent Coeducation Schools (HICES) in regional Bathurst, where the conditions were drier than Sydney, albeit much cooler. With runners from Yrs 3-6, the students combined efforts to finish as this year’s runners-up, an outstanding achievement. From the group, a remarkable 13 runners have now been selected to represent HICES at the State Combined Independent Schools carnival next month. Congratulations to all runners and the coaching staff who have supported them.

Lismore Appeal (extended until Friday 3 June)

We have extended the deadline for any donations for our Lismore Appeal to next Friday 3 June. Thank you to families who have been part of our initial stationery donation drive. This week under the guidance of our Junior Campus Chaplain, Ms McKenzie, Junior School students wrote some beautiful, empathetic cards for families that are going through the heartbreaking process of rebuilding their lives.

New Smartboards installed in our Classrooms

Our teachers and students are super excited about our wonderful new interactive Smartboards which were installed in our Prep classrooms over the weekend. They provide a large 75” shared digital learning space and our students are already exploring how to write on and operate the boards using the digital pens and even their fingers. We love all the new ways students and teachers can use their Smartboards to collaborate to find information, share ideas and solve problems. We also love this opportunity for students to be curious and wonder about what’s inside the Smartboards and puzzle out how they work. Below are two photos of our new boards, one from our Yr 2 classroom where a teacher and student were working together, and the second from a Yr 1 classroom where you can see how the portable Smartboards form a part of the learning spaces in the classroom.

World Maths Day

On Wednesday 23 March, Yr 2 students took part in the World Maths Day Mathletics Competition. Students competed in Live Mathletics challenges and participated in fun activities that highlight the wonder of numbers.

Amy Dang, Hollidai Wang and Nicholas Barnes achieved the top three scores in the challenges. Amy was also one of the top scoring students in the global competition.

Samir Jackson, Kathleen Chan, Zandre Coussy and Emilia Barnes received certificates for their outstanding effort in Mathletics.

Congratulations to all the Yr 2 students who participated and challenged themselves during World Maths Day.

Reconciliation Week 2022

27 May to 3 June

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians whether they are individuals, families, communities, organisations, and government, to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.

This year we are all being asked to make change beginning with brave actions in our daily lives at our workplaces, where we live, play, and socialise.

Our Prep classes will be carrying out different activities that will reflect this throughout the week. We encourage you to have conversations at home about what this week means to our students and what small change can your family make together to reflect this year’s theme.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Parent Teacher interviews for Juniors

Parent Teacher Interviews for families of Junior Students will be held in Week 7 of term, 6-10 June. Interviews can be booked via this link.  Bookings can be made from Monday 30 May at 9am to Friday 3 June at 9am. If you’re unable to attend these interviews in person, we can arrange for the interview to be conducted via Zoom. Please book in with your teacher and advise them directly if you would prefer a Zoom interview session.

Parking

Parking around the school can be problematic, especially around pick up time. To ease congestion and ensure the safety of our students, the Prep school use a carline that enables parents to collect their children from the underground carpark from 2.45pm each day. We therefore ask Redlands House families to refrain from parking in the 5 minutes parking zone outside the Preschool from 2.45pm onwards. Families are still able to park for 5 minutes out the front of Redlands House between 2.30pm – 2.45pm. Cones will be placed on the road at 2.45pm, not before, in order to prepare for the Prep Car Line.

Transition Gold 2023 Information Session

Parents and families interested in the Transition Gold class for their child in 2023 are encouraged to attend our information session on Wednesday 8 June at 3pm. The session will be held in the Transition Gold classroom. Families will be able to explore the classroom and hear more about the program. Please go to the Prep School reception and you will be escorted to the class.

WINTER SPORT

Netball

Last weekend saw NBISC play host to the majority of the Redlands Netball teams. With a number of old Redlands vs Barker rivalries taking place, there was some exciting play across the courts, with some fixtures coming down to the final quarters of play! The 1st girls took centre stage in what was a very exciting tussle, Barker jumped out to an early 0-5 lead and looked to run away with the match, however the Redlands girls dug deep and stayed in the contest clawing their way back to only by down by 3 at the final quarter, the girls held strong and look good early in the 4th, but Barker showed a little more fitness and managed to pull away taking the victory by 15. The other fantastic clash was the Jnr F team who have worked really hard this past few weeks on their football and effective passing, and didn’t they show it! Coming up against a strong Barker team the girls really dug deep, taking the lead in the final quarter and holding on for a frantic final minute to win 18-17!

Waterpolo

There were some great results of the last week of waterpolo this past week, with the Inter Boys playing an internal match to hone their skills. The girls have progressed and despite some one-sided score lines, they are improving each week!

Football

In Round 4 our boys played against Oakhill College. A big thank you to Oakhill College who offered to host our boys teams with the closure of Macquarie University Fields. The 1st Boys played well and had their chances but sadly couldn’t convert and therefore went down in a 2-0 loss. The 15A Boys played well against an evenly matched Oakhill team, however, narrowly lost in 1-0. Despite being undermanned due to illness, the 14A Boys had a fantastic game and finished with a 3-1 win. A big thank you to the 13A boys who doubled up and played two games on Saturday, playing a pivotal role in the success of the 14A team. The 14B/13B combined team played well and never gave up but were outplayed by a strong Oakhill side on the day. Our 13A Boys had a very tough game against a well drilled Oakhill side and given a number of the players had already played for the 14As, we had some tired legs and Oakhill managed to get the win. The 13B side were met by a tough game against Oxley College but had two fantastic goals and continue to get better and better each week.

Sadly the girls games scheduled at Macquarie University were washed out. Fingers crossed that all of our girls games can go ahead this weekend so that they can continue their fantastic start to the season!

Congratulations to the following students who competed in the NSWCIS Football Championships earlier this week: Hugo McKay, Brianna Irvine, Madeleine Boris and Jasmine Black. A further congratulations to Hugo McKay and Jasmine Black who were both selected into the NSWCIS Football team, a fantastic achievement for our students.

A reminder to save the date for the End of Season Football function – Tuesday 6 September. We hope to see all Football students and parents in attendance!

Hockey

The 1st Hockey team had a fantastic game on Saturday, continuing their strong form this season. After a busy week training the team put some newly developed skills to the test. The conditions were bleak and dreary and sadly a few players were unable to make the game as they were competing at the Hockey State Championships. This allowed for us to welcome up Remie, Eleanor and Lexi who played exceptionally well in the 1st team. It was a great game from both teams and Redlands finished with an impressive 3-0 WIN! Special shoutout to the goal scorers, Orabella, Tori and Phoebe. The team looks forward to continuing to develop skills and improve over the coming weeks and hopefully get some more wins along the way!

The 2nds team had a fantastic game on the weekend, beating SACS 2-0! The girls worked well to overcome a tough opposition – a special mention to Lexie Jones for scoring two incredible goals in the match. Well done to Philomena Lee and Jemima Hugman who stepped up to play goalie for a half each, both doing a fantastic job in a new position. Overall, it was a great match and it will be exciting to see what this team can bring in the upcoming games. They hope to continue improving their communication on the field and their shooting over the coming weeks.

Our Hockey students will be travelling to Mittagong to play Oxley College this Saturday 28 May. A reminder for parents to complete the permissions online for the bus on Saturday. All students will need a mask for the bus and please ensure you pack your Redlands tracksuit/fleece in the event of cooler weather.

In other Hockey news, a huge congratulations to Eloise Trueman who has been selected into the state squad for Hockey and congratulations to Sebastien Griffith who has been selected into the NSWCIS Open Boys Hockey team. Our Hockey players are going from strength to strength which is great to see!

Save the Date: End of Season Hockey Function

Thursday 25 August

A reminder to save the date for the End of Season Hockey function – Thursday 25th August. We hope to see all Hockey students and parents in attendance!

  • When: Friday Afternoons
  • Time: 3.30pm-5.00pm
  • Venue: Balmoral Oval

If you are interested in joining this group please fill out the Cross Country Training Expression of Interest Form. Please contact Mr Walker (Head Coach) if you have any questions.

Snowsports

Please see the Snowsports page for all the most up to date information regarding the 2022 Snowsports season.

AFL

We are looking forward to round 5 this weekend, for all teams this weekend this Friday 27 and Saturday 28 May. The draws are available on the Redlands Pulse AFL, please ensure you check the Redlands Rhino for the most up to date fixture information each week.

Good luck to all our teams!

Tennis

Unfortunately, due to a sudden downpour of rain all ISA matches were cancelled and our players were unable to compete against St Andrews and St Augustines. We hope that next week will bring clearer weather and allow students to compete as they are eager to play!

On a more positive note, the Lane Cove courts were more fortunate in the weather and students were able to stay on court until the end of their sessions. The Development Squad particularly was in high spirits and we hope to bring this energy to the Internal Competition matches.

A reminder for Round 5 (28 May) this weekend:

  • If you are unable to attend Saturday’s competition, please email Caitlin Wong by no later than 12pm on Friday. Attendance is mandatory otherwise and particularly important for ISA players as this competition has very strict guidelines.
  • Please check the draw and playing pairs list to see when/where/who you are playing.
  • Students need to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before start time.
  • For any questions, please email Caitlin Wong.

Let’s hope for good weather this week!

Rubgy

Redlands Rugby will finally have the opportunity to properly kick off our season this weekend with matches against our divisional rivals Redfield.

This is a fantastic chance to push our program forward against not only a strong opposition, in Redfield, but also continue to build our combinations in each of our squads.

With Redfield only able to field teams in the Under 14s, Under 16s and Opens our mighty Under 13s will instead travel to Rat Park to play a trial match against St Augustines.

Game times as follows.

Redlands Under 13s vs St Augustines                 09:00am           Rat Park Field 3
Redlands Under 14s vs Redfield                         11:00am           Hills Grammar School
Redlands Under 16s vs Redfield                         12:00pm           Hills Grammar School
Redlands 1st XV vs Redfield                                1:15pm             Hills Grammar School

I could not be more excited to see these matches, especially the Under 16s match which looks to be a top of the table clash again.

I hope to see as many of you as possible on the sidelines. This weekend will be incredibly special for our 2022 Rugby Captain Hugh Sellar, having his first opportunity to lead out his 1st XV.

Fitness Centre

With Winter Sport Trials and preparation for the ISA Winter Sport Season underway, the Fitness Centre is the perfect space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday to Friday start promptly at 6:30am. Already we have had a great number of students attending the sessions and look forward to welcoming more interested students over the coming weeks!

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

HICES Cross Country

On Tuesday our Junior team travelled to Scots All Saints in Bathurst to compete in the HICES Cross Country Carnival in rain free crisp conditions. All our runners are to be commended on their efforts both in the lead up to the day with training but also on the day while they ran and supporting others when they were not running. Special mention was made of Owen Beck (Year 5) who stopped to go back and help a team mate who had fallen at the start. A short highlight video can be viewed here.

The following students qualified in the top 10 in their age groups and as such now represent HICES at the CIS Cross Country in two week’s time. We wish them the best of luck as they prepare for the carnival.

As you would be aware our Summer and Winter Representative Team Photos take place next week on Wednesday 1 June  for all Junior School students. In the same format as last year both Term 1 Summer Representative Teams and our Term 2 Winter Representative team photos will take place on the same day commencing at 8:30am. Our normal Wednesday Sport program will take place as normal that afternoon.

Snowsports

As we begin to prepare for the upcoming season Redlands has been involved in competitive Snowsports for many years and has won numerous awards at the national level for individual events and as a school. We are committed to prepare our students to ride and ski safely and competently to enjoy this wonderful lifelong family sport. To race, students need to confidently ski or snowboard on all blue runs.

The program commences with the start of the winter school holiday and if your children are keen to compete, they can enter the Redlands Cup followed by the Sydney Interschools Championships. Children can compete in a wide variety of ski and snowboard events with Redlands offering specialist training (Y1-12) for participants.

These events will take place from July 8 2022.For more information on how Junior School students can become involved in the Snowsports program please read the booklet on the following link.

Drama and Theatre

It is not enough to demand insight and informative images of reality from the theatre. Our theatre must stimulate a desire for understanding, a delight in changing reality.’ Bertold Brecht

This has never been more true with Year 9 Curriculum Drama shining bright On Monday and Tuesday Night, participating in their first live performance evening since COVID-19. Performance images will be in Note Day next week.

Gala Arts

The performance audition submissions are now closed for Gala Arts with finalists being announced on Friday 27 May. Excitingly, we are now opening submissions for the Gala Arts Photography section. All the information is below and can be found on iLearn. Please email drama@redlands.nsw.edu to be added to the page for the submission.

Senior Curriculum Performance Evenings

Redlands Jazz meets Manly Jazz – 24-25 September

We are excited to be taking our Senior Jazz program (Stage Bands, Jazz Combo & Jazz Vocal Ensemble) to the 45th Manly Jazz Festival to be held on 24-25 September (the first weekend after Term 3 ends). Manly Jazz have just advised us of a date change to the originally communicated dates, and so we in turn apologise that we need all members of our Jazz Program to re-confirm their availability for this wonderful opportunity at the revised time. Our Head of Bands, Mr Joe Montz has recently emailed home with further information about this. If you have yet to receive this, please contact seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au and we will point you in the right direction. In light of the proximity to the end of term, these new dates mean that no Friday afternoon rehearsal will need to be scheduled.  If you/your child is in the Senior Jazz program, please let us know your availability during the first week of the September holidays. Many thanks!

Students in Years 4 and 5 – MIP Instrument Reminder

Please note that all students must bring their MIP instruments to school with them each Thursday morning and store it in the appropriate area. Whilst we appreciate instruments are sometimes dropped off at reception later in the day, we unfortunately cannot guarantee that the instrument will reach your child before their MIP lesson. We encourage students to put systems in place to help remember each Thursday, for example reminders in planners or alarms on iPads. Thank you for your understanding as we support our students in developing independence in their music learning.
