Balmoral Swim – Dive into the Balmoral Swim to make a splash for Cancer

On 1 May, after a rescheduling of dates, a group of Yr 9 Redlands students put together a team to partake in the Schools Relay Challenge.

Every week nearly three Australian children will die of cancer. Children’s Cancer Institute believes this is three too many. Their vision is to save the lives of all children with cancer and improve their long-term health, through research. Their organisation exists solely to put an end to childhood cancer. Sixty years ago, cancer was nearly always a death sentence for a child. Now eight out of 10 children survive – and it is medical research that has made this huge difference.

Balmoral Swim for Cancer has been supporting the Children’s Cancer Institute since 2006. Their mission is to cure all children. Fundraising from the swim, will help support research programs like their Zero Childhood Cancer Program.

Children’s Cancer Institute are pioneering the move into personalised medicine through the Zero Childhood Cancer Program, which is run in partnership with the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. As part of a nationwide clinical trial currently in its third year, children diagnosed with high-risk cancer (those with less than 30% chance of survival) have a sample from their cancer sent to their laboratories. They analyse its genetic makeup, identify which drugs are most likely to be effective, and test these in their disease models. The results are then used to develop a tailored treatment plan for each individual child. This is the first time anything like this has been done in Australia, and it is saving lives.

This Australian-first program will give hope to children who are at highest risk of treatment failure, by identifying the best possible tailored treatments for them. Zero Childhood Cancer is a key step towards the vision of one day curing 100% of children with cancer.

Overall, the Balmoral Swim fundraised an astonishing $95,288.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the event.
