Issue 12 2022 Term 2 Week 2 - 05 May 2022

From The Principal

Recent media articles regarding the use of electronic devices in schools, such as mobile phones and laptop computers, have created flow on discussion within school communities and thus I thought it would be useful to highlight our position at Redlands. The topic is certainly not a recent one in education; however, with the COVID pandemic having led to students spending more time on electronic devices at home, the concerns raised are enhanced and we are all rightly focused on the wellbeing of young people.

A number of years ago the School reviewed its procedures in terms of student use of mobile phones and moved to a position in which mobile phones were not to be used during the school day for all Junior Campus students and students in Years 7 to 10. Phones are to be kept in school lockers during the day and are confiscated if used without permission. At Redlands we aim to acknowledge and respect that as students mature, they can demonstrate increased responsibility and students in Years 11 and 12 are allowed to utilise their mobile phones during the School day. It is common that they utilise online calendars and other organisational tools throughout the day. We also enable our Yr 12 students to access the local community shops during lunchtime, which is a privilege that they greatly appreciate.

At the end of Yr 12 we survey our students to receive feedback regarding their experience at Redlands.  One of the questions specifically asks whether they feel that they ‘have been able to make appropriate use of computers’ to assist in their learning. The response has been consistently high and in 2021 the result was a score of 9 on a 10-point agreement scale. Laptop computers and iPads provide an important educational tool and our staff work collaboratively and creatively with our exceptional e-Learning Coordinators on each campus to plan high quality educational units of work. It is also important that we are preparing our students for real life and supporting them to develop their computing skills.

The School has detailed ICT Use policies in place and staff are well aware of the importance of the balanced and appropriate use of technology in the classroom. It is important that we work with parents in educating students regarding issues relating to cyber safety and their wellbeing. The amount of time some young people are currently spending on electronic devices at home and socially is a cause for concern and we encourage parents to have open conversations regarding this with their children and with the School. Redlands has partnered with Cyber Safety Hub to provide current resources to support the community in this important area and I encourage you to visit the website: Learn More

Director of Music, Amy Richardson, confirmed this week that Redlands has made the Australian Music Examinations Board’s Top Ten list in the category of ‘Most Outstanding Accredited School’ for NSW. Sincere thanks go to the Music Administration team, our Specialist Music Tutors who provided Zoom lessons and piano accompaniment, and parents (acting as Camera crew) in a tremendous partnership – striving to position our students as they worked hard for these learning milestones during the remote learning context of 2021. Nearly 40 students achieved a result of ‘Distinction’ (or higher) and we are very proud of them.

Congratulations to Edward Atkins who has recently been appointed to the position as Head of Outdoor Education and Winter School, following David Gregory’s decision to resign from the role to pursue other interests (from mid-May). Mr Atkins is currently the Yr 8 Year Advisor and a PDHPE teacher in the Secondary School, who has significant pastoral leadership and outdoor education experience. He will lead our Outdoor Education program with passion and distinction, and we sincerely thank Mr Gregory for his valued contribution to Redlands and for enhancing the program over the last four years.

We would like to thank those students in Year 11 who kindly escorted our guests, our Year 6 students who wrote cards full of warm wishes deepening connections across generations of Redlanders, and to our extraordinary music students from Years 10, 11 and 12 whose preparation and talent enabled them to shine as they gave exceptional performances for our Alumnae to enjoy.

We would also like to acknowledge the presence of Redlands Alumni Association Committee Members who attended this event and donated a small gift to those celebrating their 50 and 60 year Reunions with their School.

Term 2 is off to a great start with a few initiatives getting off the ground shortly.

Off the back of the Senior School fundraiser last term for Trinity Catholic College in Lismore, Prep and Junior School will be participating in the Light for Lismore Service Project to help The Northern River Children’s Services, a not-for-profit organisation which provides day care to over 2000 children in flood impacted areas. We will be collecting donations of stationery and craft supplies (new or used in excellent condition) starting next week. Please see below for a full list of requested supplies. The project will also provide students with hands-on experience – from a letter-writing and picture-drawing campaign to send messages of hope and support to their peers in Lismore as well as decorating boxes in which to send the supplies.

Later this month, we also aim to collect old uniforms for recycling by Worn Up. As a courtesy to our volunteers and due to limited storage space, we please ask that uniforms sent in this term are Redlands branded and not suitable for the secondhand uniform sale, eg old sports uniforms. We will be collecting current uniforms in good condition for the next secondhand uniform sale in Term 3.

Head of Secondary School

A Sunny Week 2

It was great to see Yr 12 back on campus in a regular capacity yesterday. They are a calming influence for the younger students and despite the pressures of the final year, they are always smiling and positive as they move through the school. The sunny days have been welcomed by all and students have enjoyed playing outside at recess and lunch and using the Fahl Garden for their lessons. Ms Walker had her Yr 11 Geography students learning on the Fahl Garden and the rooftop garden for their double lesson on Wednesday. Her students used their mobile phones to photograph and record artefacts for their research into sustainability. It was great to observe students and teachers enjoying the space, and being able to use it for learning and play. Seeing the community in this way felt like we were almost back to ‘normal’ and there was a lovely surge of hope for the future. This week has seen a range of events in the Secondary School: Yr 11 Burn Bright, Yr 11 Moneyvest Workshop, Yr 10 Diagnostic Testing and the Platinum Luncheon. Being able to welcome our extended community and guests onto campus furthered that feeling of normalcy and I was really proud of how maturely the secondary students conducted themselves across a range of activities this week.

Yr 7 & 8 Assembly

This morning we met with Yr 7 and 8 to reiterate some key messages. Firstly, we congratulated our Stage 4 students for their strong Term 1 effort grades. They’ve made an exemplary start to the school year and have many reasons to be proud of their academic commitment and participation so far. Ms Rolon, our Dean of Studies, spoke with students about their upcoming assessments this term and reminded them of the various support mechanisms available to them in the school. We also reiterated 1.5-2 hours of home learning each evening and an increased effort on the weekends, spending 2-3 hours on class learning, revision and/or assessment preparation. Shifting students’ perspectives about outside of school learning is fundamental to them becoming independent and agentic learners. The aim is they shift their understanding and approach to homelearning from something they are forced to do, and therefore often complete in a rush, to an activity they take time over and gain value from.

We then moved to a discussion of the school values. Students were reminded that they will face serious consequences if they engage in behaviours that are not conducive with the Redlands values of honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, fairness and moral courage.

Vaping is one of these concerning behaviours, and engaging in vaping undermines the values of respect (for oneself and others) and responsibility (to self and others). Students were reminded about the detrimental effects of vaping (smoking e-cigarettes; also known as, juuls or STIGS) on a person’s health, and that vaping at school, or in school uniform is a serious breach of the school rules. We outlined what vapes are, how they look, taste and smell and the harmful impact they have on health. I also confirmed for students that we have vape detectors in key locations across the school because we have a zero-tolerance approach to vaping at Redlands.

The importance of moral courage was also reinforced with students in our assembly. We spoke of the dangers of a bystander culture, especially when students stand-by and do not report risky or inappropriate behaviour in their peers.

Risky or inappropriate behaviour may occur in-person, or online. It may be physical or emotional in nature, such as:

  • Watching whilst others intentionally break the school rules
  • Sharing or receiving videos of others breaking the school rules
  • Composing offensive or hurtful text messages to another student or group of students
  • Taking sides in an argument and/or excluding people, in-person or online

We reminded students that is their Redlands responsibility to look out for each other and their School; to hold each other accountable for their personal and online safety.

With a focus on three of the Redlands values: responsibility, respect and moral courage, we explored how students should demonstrate these values, by:

  • Being the best version of themselves
  • Showing respect to each other and having respect for themselves (online and in-person)
  • Asking for help/guidance if they need it – not waiting for a teacher to ask if they need help, but stepping up and speaking up for themselves and others
  • Stepping up and speaking up if they witness behaviour which results in increased risk to others and our community
  • Understanding that the School has confidential processes and safe spaces to enable students to step up and speak up
  • Asking students to consider how they can become a young person of character and strength, who is respected by others, and who in turn, respects themselves

Distribution of Rapid Antigen Tests

Next week, each student will be sent home with an additional supply of ten Rapid Antigen Tests which should be used for discretionary purposes. Specifically, students should return a daily negative Rapid Antigen Test before coming to school if they have been deemed a household/close contact. In addition, if a student is showing COVID-19 symptoms, they should stay home and take a Rapid Antigen Test.

Dance Worlds Championship Florida

Sam Hely, Yr 11 HSC, recently competed in the Dance World Championships in Florida. She competed in Open Jazz and her team finished 7th in the world, an achievement that surpassed her expectations, and was gladly received, no doubt! Below is a photo of Sam and her dance captain Elise Thomas (Redlander) with the trophy.

Service

Matthew Talbot

On Monday morning we were provided with the opportunity to participate in the Mathew Talbot service based in Woolloomooloo. Mathew Talbot, founded by St Vincent De Paul, is a support service for homeless men which provides shelter and their access to essential services including meals.

We departed school at 6.30am on Monday morning and once we arrived, we helped other volunteers to set up the dining hall with cutlery for the breakfast service, available for both men residing in the shelter and from outside. We also had the responsibility of packing up the dining hall, this included clearing plates and wiping down tables before our return to school by 8.20am.

We all really enjoyed participating in the service and it was a great way to start the day. The men were all so friendly and grateful and it was such a heartening and rewarding experience to be involved in. It caused us to reflect on the hardships affecting others, homelessness as a local and global issue and the importance of community services. We recommend everyone looking for ways to get involved with service at Redlands to sign up. If you are looking to sign up, organise a group of three and email Ms Riley your names to volunteer, or for any other enquiries.

Year 12

Welcome back to Term 2 for the class of 2022. I hope your families all had a wonderful rest during the Easter break. Many Yr 12 students also made effective use of the studying opportunities available for them on campus over the holiday period, which was great to see. The Half-Yearly assessments over the past week and a half of Term 2 have proceeded very smoothly and it was a pleasure to note how mature and calm most students have approached these assessments. On Wednesday this week we met for the first time this term as a Year Group for a workshop run by the organisation ‘MoneyVest’, helping Yr 12 students understand superannuation and their options, investing and saving, payslips, budgeting and moving out of home.

Yr 12 Camp

In the last week of Term 1, we finally made it on camp! Despite the need to change the date three times and the venue twice, we were able to get away to the Blue Mountains for 2 nights and 3 days, returning a day early due to heavy rain. All students had a wonderful time participating in activities such as mountain biking, horse riding, bush walking and yoga, as well as having some time to study and chat with their friends. In the evenings we held a trivia night, hosted brilliantly by Amber Williams and Joel Keith, and a movie night. On the final morning we had a time for reflection where students read the letters that they had written to themselves in Yr 7, followed by the letters written by parents and then they wrote a letter to themselves that we will post to them before they begin their final examinations. This was quite an emotional time for many, particularly as they read their parents’ letters of love and support during their final year of school. Due to the need to leave the Blue Mountains a day early, and the fact that we have all become experts at making last minute changes to plans and being able to adapt the situation to best suit everyone, we were able to host the final camp dinner – the ‘Oscar’ night, dress as a celebrity dinner in Redlands Hall on the Thursday evening, with a special thanks going to our wonderful comperes for the evening, Kyle Banfield and Louise Colin (photos to come next week!).

Towards the end of last term, the annual Battle of the Bands competition was held at school. Congratulations to all that participated in this musical event, and particularly to the following talented winners below:

Year 11

Day of Hope

On Tuesday, Yr 11 participated in the empowering Day of Hope, presented by former Young Australian of the Year and popular High School Speaker Glen Gerreyn. Some of the key takeaways for Yr 11 included the following:

  • Stop comparing yourself against others.
  • Spend more time creating than comparing.
  • Self Awareness manifests self-management.
  • If you believe in your dreams, your craft and yourself, your parents will believe in your dreams too. If you’re not devoted – get another dream.
  • Live life as if everything is rigged in your favour.
  • You are more than enough.
  • Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
  • Don’t let success get to your head or failure get to your heart.

On Friday during Tutor Time, Yr 11 will be creating vision boards that will assist them with clarifying, concentrating and maintaining focus on specific goals throughout their senior years of study and into the future.

Student Achievement

Congratulations Emilie Bessell who competed at the U18 Australian National Junior Championships in Ballarat over the school holidays. As a part of the NSW Metro team they finished in 6th place, congratulations Emilie!

Well done to Seb Griffiths who was part of the the U18 NSW Blues Development team who placed 5th at the Australian Hockey Championships in Cairns. The Blues only lost one game and missed the semis only on goal difference to the Victoria 1 team. Well done Seb!

Congratulations to Orabella Cornelius who has been selected to represent NSW in the annual Australian Gymnastics Championships to be held on the Gold Coast in May. Best of luck Orabella!

Congratulations to Mabel Hancock who won a gold medal at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships!

Congratulations to Loch Wilding  who finished 11th in the Boys 17-19 50m Freestyle, 7th in the Boys 17-19 50m Butterfly and 4th in the Boys 17-19 50m Breaststroke at the CIS Swimming Carnival.

Redlands Yr 11 HSC Visual Arts exhibition.

Well done to all the Yr 11 HSC Visual Arts students for completing their Visual Arts Body of Work. All works have been carefully displayed in the gallery on Level 1 of the Learning Hub. The theme of the Collection of Works is “Extraordinary in the ordinary” where students had to base their works on the beauty in the every day.  Each student’s body of work had to include photography, supported with a medium of their choice. All the works are all conceptually impressive.

ISA XC Trials – Friday 6 May

A reminder to all Yr 11 students that the ISA XC Trials are taking place tomorrow morning at 6.30am at Balmoral Oval. Students will need to make their own way to Balmoral and a bus will drop students back to the Secondary School after the trial. Students will need to bring their full school uniform to get changed into before period 1. Best of luck to all the Yr 11s who have signed up to compete in the trial.

Paul Dillon Young People, Alcohol and Risk Taking: Looking After your Mates

Focussing primarily on alcohol, this introductory session attempts to debunk some of the myths in this area, particularly around how to look after friends. Accurate, up-to-date and credible information will be provided to assist young people to make healthier choices. The latest prevalence rates of alcohol and other drug use by Secondary School students will be discussed, with an emphasis on ‘positive norms’, i.e., how many young people choose not to drink alcohol or use other drugs. Basic life skills will also be discussed around alcohol-related emergencies, including knowing when to call an ambulance. Yr 10 will receive this presentation during P1 and P2 on Wednesday, 11 May.

Dr Tessa Opie Parent Seminar and Student Workshops

Further information regarding Dr Tessa Opie and her seminar for parents and workshops for students came out in a letter to parents today from the Deputy Principal, Mr. Sean Corcoran. Please refer to this letter for further information.

Yr 10 Vaccinations 2022

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The following vaccine will be offered for Yr 10 students: Meningococcal ACWY vaccine on 26 May, 2022.

Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be handed to students in Week 2 to bring home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

  • read all the information provided
  • complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive
  • return the completed consent form before Friday 13 May. Students are to drop off the consent forms to the Student Services Office.

Parents please ensure;

  • your child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic
  • your child brings a mask to wear whilst in the clinic
  • your child does not attend school if they are unwell or if they have any symptoms of Covid

Absent students

Please note that, to improve vaccination completion, students will be offered a catch-up vaccination at a subsequent clinic. They do not need to go to their GP for the missed vaccine.

Parents/guardians who do not wish their child to receive the vaccination should return the uncompleted consent form.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic as a physical card. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Parents can obtain this through the myGov website or the Express Plus Medicare Mobile app. (Anyone aged 14 years or older has to get their own statement.)

Student Acknowledgements and Congratulations

Congratulations to Jess Van Extel for being selected for ISA Hockey. Well done, Jess!

We had a number of students compete at the NSWCIS Swimming Championships across Monday evening and Tuesday. The Inter Boys relay team made up of Lachlan Green (Yr 9), Xander Halfen (Yr 10), Rafferty Heard (Yr 10) and  Julius Keller (Yr 10) finished 10th over all with a time of 2:09.56 which is a great effort!

Well done to Xander Halfen who finished 9th in both the Boys 15-16 100m & 200m backstroke and also finished 7th in the Boys 15-16 50m Backstroke.

Balmoral Swim – Dive into the Balmoral Swim to make a splash for Cancer

On 1 May, after a rescheduling of dates, a group of Yr 9 Redlands students put together a team to partake in the Schools Relay Challenge.

Every week nearly three Australian children will die of cancer. Children’s Cancer Institute believes this is three too many. Their vision is to save the lives of all children with cancer and improve their long-term health, through research. Their organisation exists solely to put an end to childhood cancer. Sixty years ago, cancer was nearly always a death sentence for a child. Now eight out of 10 children survive – and it is medical research that has made this huge difference.

Balmoral Swim for Cancer has been supporting the Children’s Cancer Institute since 2006. Their mission is to cure all children. Fundraising from the swim, will help support research programs like their Zero Childhood Cancer Program.

Children’s Cancer Institute are pioneering the move into personalised medicine through the Zero Childhood Cancer Program, which is run in partnership with the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. As part of a nationwide clinical trial currently in its third year, children diagnosed with high-risk cancer (those with less than 30% chance of survival) have a sample from their cancer sent to their laboratories. They analyse its genetic makeup, identify which drugs are most likely to be effective, and test these in their disease models. The results are then used to develop a tailored treatment plan for each individual child. This is the first time anything like this has been done in Australia, and it is saving lives.

This Australian-first program will give hope to children who are at highest risk of treatment failure, by identifying the best possible tailored treatments for them. Zero Childhood Cancer is a key step towards the vision of one day curing 100% of children with cancer.

Overall, the Balmoral Swim fundraised an astonishing $95,288.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the event.

Year 8

Thank you and see you soon

It is with a heavy heart that I depart the Yr 8 cohort from May 16 and move into a new role inside of Redlands. It has been an absolute pleasure leading this wonderful group of students through their transition into Secondary School. I know that they are going to develop into fine young adults and they will continue to be assisted by our fantastic tutors and the incoming year advisors. I will still have plenty of opportunities to engage with and be part of the Yr 8 cohort as they move through the Secondary School in my new role as the Head of Winter School and Outdoor Education.

Thanks, Eddy Atkins

Year 7

At this point in the term students will be be engaging in assessment for learning and they will have assessment tasks to hand in. Today, our Dean of Studies (Yrs 7-10), Ms Anna-Marie Rolon, spoke with our Year 7 students about where to seek help if they were concerned or unsure about any aspect of an assessment task. Ms Rolon reminded students in the first instance that they should speak with their class teacher or the Subject Coordinator. Teachers will be able to support students should they struggle understanding the requirements, marking criteria or if they have poor task initiation, or are failing to progress in a timely manner. Year 7 Tutors are also a good source of support and will be able to work with students if organisation is a problem. Students were also reminded of the Study Centre where specialist subject teachers and coordinators give of their time to work with students. The Study Centre timetable is available on the Year 7 Core Page in iLearn.

Head of Junior School

Reporting Live from Canberra!

I am currently enjoying a wonderful couple of days with Year 6 on camp in Canberra and as I write this, both the sun and our intrepid campers are rising as we look forward to another day of action-packed activities. It has been a wonderful trip again and I have enjoyed the many opportunities to sit and enjoy a conversation over a meal or on an activity with students, which are always a highlight for me on each Junior School camp. Through a combination of both COVID and last year’s floods, this Year Group have not been on a camp since Yr 3 and of course, some of the group have not been on a camp before. So, it is a credit to them that they have been such a cohesive and supportive group and embraced and faced each challenge and activity presented to them.

The students have been actively engaged in rich learning experiences in both civics and outdoor education such as the high-ropes course, camping, canoeing, hiking and mountain biking, interspersed with curriculum-related learning experiences at CSIRO, the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy and the National Gallery of Australia, where my day started yesterday with three of the groups. They have also enjoyed evening activities at the Observatory, the Botanical Gardens and this evening, the group have a private session at Questacon, the interactive National Science and Technology Centre, which is always a student highlight.

One of the things that has made me particularly proud has been observing how the students have been looking after one another and I have seen and received consistent feedback from various sources about how polite, engaged and respectful the group have been.

To assist in meeting the cost of part of our week in the nation’s capital, the Australian Government generously contributes funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs, which is duly acknowledged and paid directly to the School upon completion of the excursion. This has supported the opportunity for our students to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.

We have posted a number of pictures of the trip so far on the Year 6 page on Redlands Pulse for you to enjoy and get a feel of the trip so far and I look forward to joining families welcome the group back at approximately 4pm on Friday afternoon. I know you will also join me in thanking the amazing team of teachers here caring for the group. It is a huge responsibility, but the meticulous planning of Mrs Robinson, Mr Watkins and the team has helped with the smooth organisation of the week yet again.

Yr 4 Camp (11-13 May)

We are looking forward to Yr 4 being our next camp group out next week. Yr 4 families should have received a detailed letter on Tuesday outlining our planning and updated Covid protocols and I look forward to joining the group for two days during their time away.

All information can also be found on the Year 4 page of Redlands Pulse and via this link to the OEG and Redlands website (Password: Shine).

Junior Piano Competition

Last Friday afternoon, I was delighted to be part of the audience at this year’s annual Junior Piano Competition, an annual highlight in my calendar. The quality of performance from every child was exceptional and our guest judge, acclaimed French pianist, Jeremy Eskenazi, also noted the high overall level of performance.

It truly was a memorable afternoon in the Edwards Auditorium within the Music Centre on the Senior Campus and I extend my congratulations to all of the students involved and the overall winner, Ina Guan.

All parents and carers are invited to this presentation on Respectful Relationships Education: At School and in the Home. NAPLAN – Years 3 and 5

Next week sees students across Australia in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is more commonly known. Our starting point in Yrs 3 and 5 is always to ensure that the students do not feel any undue pressure, that they are appropriately prepared for the format of the tests, and that they are provided the conditions to do their very best which is all that we can ever ask of them. This is also the first time that the assessments will be done online, which has been factored into our preparation.

My thanks are extended to Ms Wilson and Mrs Smith for their considerable work behind the scenes to ensure that everything is organised and to Class and Learning Plus teachers for looking after the academic and pastoral needs of their students, both before and during these tests.

Distribution of Rapid Antigen Tests

Next week, each student will be sent home with an additional supply of 10 Rapid Antigen Tests (two boxes of 5 RATs) which should be used for discretionary purposes. Specifically, students should return a daily negative Rapid Antigen Test before coming to school if they have been deemed a household/close contact. In addition, if a student is showing COVID-19 symptoms, they should stay home and take a Rapid Antigen Test.

Lismore School Appeal

As part of a whole School initiative, our Junior School students and families will be encouraged to support a service project that will support The Northern River Children’s Services (NCRS), a not for profit organisation that is responsible for providing day care to over 2000 children in flood-impacted areas. This organisation is supported by the Commonwealth Department of Education and parent fees.

To help those in need, our students will have an opportunity to create boxes filled with donated school and art supplies to replenish materials lost during the floods. Students will also make cards for families that are going through the heartbreaking process of rebuilding their lives. We know that this project will provide the students with a sense of both empathy and purpose as we remind our NSW neighbours in Lismore, that they are cared for and not forgotten. We encourage families to support this opportunity in the coming weeks as we strive to make a difference to this community.

Junior Campus Term 2 Sustainability Update

Waste Free Wednesday

From this term onwards, we will be encouraging students to bring a rubbish free lunchbox to school every Wednesday. Our Yr 6 Environment Captains and Yr 2 Sustainability Leaders will be thinking up some fun incentives to encourage students to take part of this initiative, alongside giving students ideas on how to pack a rubbish free lunchbox.

Return and Earn Container Deposit Scheme

Students will soon be able to recycle any cans or bottles through the Return and Earn container deposit scheme. New bins will be placed throughout the school for collection and students leaders in the Prep and Junior School will decide what the funds will go towards.

Worm Towers and Crunch and Sip Worm Farm

This term, worm towers will be installed throughout the school gardens, which will allow students to feed the worms their fruit and vegetable scraps. Additionally, our Prep students will be collecting all Crunch and Sip scraps, which will be sent to a separate worm farm. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Yr 2 Sustainability Leaders to see the food cycle in action and interactively explore sustainability.

Cutlery Library

The Junior Campus Canteen cutlery library is now up and running. The removal of our bamboo cutlery will reduce the waste Redlands creates and lower our carbon footprint. A big thank you to all students and families who donated spoons or forks to our cutlery library.

Trial Hip Hop Classes for Junior School Students

Following feedback from families and as a new option, our Redlands Dance Academy is delighted to provide a free trial Hip Hop Dance class at 3.30pm on Monday 16 May with a view to starting classes from 30 May. There is no need to register; just turn up ready to dance in comfortable clothing!

Junior Debating

Congratulations to our Primary B Representative Debating team who have qualified for the Octofinals in the ISDA Debating competition. Kate Andrews, Charlie Benfield, Ivy Flatman, Ollie Hosker, Apollo Mangos, Alexia Tsacalos will compete against Abbotsleigh on 13 May and we wish them all the best.

Mother’s Day Classic

This Sunday 8 May, Redlands will again be participating at the Mother’s Day Classic to honour and support the 1 in 7 women diagnosed with breast cancer. Redlands House and Transition Gold

Finally we have been able to take the Redlands House children on an excursion. It was a very exciting day for students and teachers. Everyone did a fabulous job getting to school very early to catch the bus. The award-winning creative team from Monkey Baa Theatre Company did an adaptation, it was a unique imagining of two beloved picture books, Edward the Emu and Edwina the Emu, combining the plights of both emus in one heartfelt, clever and funny new tale. The children were very well behaved and really enjoyed the experience. After enjoying our morning tea on the lawn outside Glen St Theatre we returned to Redlands House. Thank you to all of the Redlands House team for working together to make this day smooth and successful. A very special thanks to our parent helpers Ali, Justin, Antoniette and Leroy, for their assistance on the day.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Swimming

We had a number of students compete at the NSWCIS Swimming Championships across Monday evening and Tuesday. The Inter Boys relay team made up of Lachlan Green (Yr 9), Xander Halfen (Yr 10), Rafferty Heard (Yr 10) and  Julius Keller (Yr 10) finished 10th over all with a time of 2:09.56 which is a great effort!

Xander Halfen (Yr 10) finished 9th in both the Boys 15-16 100m & 200m backstroke and also finished 7th in the Boys 15-16 50m Backstroke.

Loch Wilding (Yr 11) finished 11th in the Boys 17-19 50m Freestyle, 7th in the Boys 17-19 50m Butterfly and 4th in the Boys 17-19 50m Breaststroke.

2022 Swimming Captain Erik Scott (Yr 12) had a large meet finishing 11th in both the 50m Freestyle & Butterfly, 9th in the 100m Backstroke, 5th in the 200m Backstroke and 4th in the 50m Backstroke.

Hockey

A huge congratulations to the following students who have been selected into the ISA Hockey team for their respective age group to compete in the upcoming NSWCIS Championship: Sophie McMillan (Open Girls), Eloise Trueman (Open Girls), Freya Gait (16&U Girls), Jessica Van Extel (16&U Girls) and Sebastien Griffith (Open Boys).

Football

Congratulations to the following students who were selected into the ISA Football representative team: Brianna Irvine (Open Girls), Jasmine Black (Open Girls), Madeleine Boris (Open Girls), Hugo McKay (Open Boys), Keian Murphy (Open Boys) and Arkie Riches (Open Girls – shadow player).

Rowing

Over the past 33 years of Redlands Rowing there have been a number of students who have continued on to gain selection in the Australian Rowing Team to compete at both World Championships, Para Olympics and Olympics alike.

Recently Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 12, Rowing Captain and Sports Captain) attended the Australian Rowing Trials in her attempt to gain selection into the Under 19 Australian Rowing Team.

With over 300 other athletes racing for either selection in the Under 19 or Under 23 teams along with the interstate pathway racing, the standard of competition is extremely high.

Coached by our Rowing Head Coach, Anders Batemyr, Elizabeth partnered up with Madison Joines from Penrith Rowing Club to race in the double scull where they finished a close 3rd. Following on from this the girls raced in single sculls where Elizabeth progressed through to the B final finishing 2nd.

Unfortunately she has narrowly missed out on selection but we are very proud of her efforts, especially considering that Elizabeth spent eight months on the sidelines in 2021 with a significant injury. To have been able to compete at such a high standard so quickly is a testament to her training ethic and hard work.

NSW SECONDARY SCHOOLS TEAMS RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last weekend, over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, a group of our Redlands sailors attended the Interschools Teams Racing NSW State Championships regatta at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in Kirribilli, which is also our home training club. The conditions were shifty, with us waiting for light winds to pick up and sailing in the rain on Friday to hiking to keep our boats flat on Sunday. Our team worked well together, using our boat handling skills in variable wind conditions and strategic teams racing skills to try and cross the finish line in winning combinations. The regatta was such an exciting opportunity for us and a great way to wrap up the season, it also being the last opportunity for our Year 12 sailors to sail for Redlands.

I can’t wait to see what other amazing results the Redlands sailors can achieve in future seasons.

WINTER SPORT

Netball

It was a great start to the ISA Netball season on Saturday with the majority of teams playing at NBISC. There was a number of tight matches between the divisions, with a few teams winning or losing by 1 goal! The 1st VII had a strong win and will be looking to continue that against Oakhill College this weekend, with all three Senior teams playing Oakhill at Oakhill. The Inter A team have a bye, with the B & C teams travelling to Chevalier College, the Inter D, E & F teams will take on Central Coast Grammar & SACS respectively at NBISC. The Jnr A team has a BYE, with the Jnr B & C, D & E team playing each other, the Jnr F taking on Central Coast Grammar and the Jnr G taking on Oxley College, all at NBISC.

All players need to be reminded that ALL jewellery needs to be removed before taking the court (players are no longer allowed to use tape to hide earrings etc).

Football

Due to the inclement weather we only managed one game of Redlands Football in Round 1. The 2nd Boys had a great hit out against St Spyridon 2nd Boys. Controlling the game from start to finish they finished with a 3-1 win. Although the conditions were tough due to the wet weather and persistent rain, spirits were high and the team played as a cohesive unit and supported each other both on and off the field. Tristan Roesink tucked away two goals in a man of the match performance and Sol Osborn put the game out of reach in the second half with a fantastic goal. A great start to what looks like an exciting season ahead for the 2nd boys.

Best of luck to all Football players in Round 2 this weekend! A reminder to check the Redlands Rhino (Redlands Pulse) for the round 2 fixtures. Please ensure you are arriving a minimum of 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled game time.

Hockey

It was great to see our Hockey players back in action on Saturday. The Firsts had a fantastic start to the season with a 2-1 win. Many of the girls commented that it was the best half of Redlands Hockey that they had played and it definitely looked pretty fabulous from the sidelines! There were some beautiful passes along the wing, some cracking shots on goal and some strong defending. The girls showed that they can work together as a team so it will be wonderful to see what happens when we get more training under our belt as the season progresses!

The 2nd Girls have commenced the season with a cracking start, finishing with a 3-0 win over the Central Coast. Despite the wet weather the team worked well together against strong opposition. A shoutout to Lexie Jones and Ava Atkinson for scoring the first goals of the season. It was fantastic to see how much chemistry the girls had on field given it is the first game of the ISA Season. We are looking forward to a great season ahead for both the 1st and 2nd Girls.

A special mention to the Friends of Hockey who provided an afternoon tea and made the new players and parents feel welcome to the program. Best of luck to our teams as they head to the Blue Mountains this Saturday.

Rugby

Berry Camp

Last Friday, our Under 16s and Opens Squads travelled down the motorway to attend the long overdue Redlands Rugby Berry Camp. Stopping at Albion Park McDonalds on the way, the boys could not be more excited to get into the Camp spirit and get to work preparing themselves and the team for the 2022 ISA Rugby Season.

After organising the dorm rooms, the boys took the short walk down to the river, training in the same paddock as our amazing 1st XV Teams of 2018 and 2019 had tread before. From the outset, there were standouts. Jack Forrest straightaway picked up the defensive calls and doggedly had his forwards working around him whilst Harley Van Der Pluijim was brilliant, his versatility in attack an immediate shining light. The first session was tough. A heavy conditioning load was matched with high pace running and focused executions of our attack in the forwards and backs. Post session, the squad took to the Berry Pool to cool off and simultaneously try and drown each other. When the final whistle was blown, the squad relaxed, a great first day in the bank with dinner on its way and the projector screen set up to watch Friday Night Football.

Saturday morning started before sunrise, the group meeting outside the dorms. From the outset, they had been told that this session was going to be tough. Hill sprints on a gradual incline are brutal and take no prisoners, but time and time again the group reset and raced up the road. I was blown away by how cohesive the squad had already become, with the leaders across both Year Groups lifting each other, encouraging each other on. Simone Franceschi, new to the program this year, never left the front, his efforts not going unnoticed by the coaches. Without question though, James Stuart was the star of the morning as he left nothing in the tank, powering up the hill time and time again.

Session done, the boys were loaded onto the bus for the highlight of the weekend, attending the Sydney University Colts 1st XV Match against the Western Sydney Two Blues. Catching up on some sleep on the way up, the boys were greeted by a roped off session front and centre in the stands with the Sydney Uni coaches directly behind. This opportunity was designed to show this group of Redlands students what the next level looks like and how achievable it is for a number of our strongest players.

Back in Berry, the boys went straight back to another session with the Forwards refining our set piece and the Backs working through their piercing attacking moves. That night, we talked about how far we had come as a group, the leaders that had emerged. A number of the players talked openly about why they play Rugby for Redlands and the pride they feel running out with their mates.

Sunday morning was a relaxed affair. A walk through session brought clarity to all of the details we had covered in Camp and a long breakfast was followed by a quick pack up and bus back home.

I could not be prouder of this group and what they have achieved over the course of just one weekend. As a group, we now have to push onwards and continue to build as we lead into our opening round against SACS in two weeks.

Redlands Rugby – Trial Games vs Scots All Saints

This weekend, the Redlands Rugby program will travel to divisional rival Scots All Saints for the final prep before our season opener next week.

All match times and bus details can be found via the Redlands Rhino. Please make sure to arrive promptly for the bus departures.

I could not be more excited for these matches this weekend and the opportunity they present for our players to continue to develop. A few key players to watch for the week would be Austin Durrant (Under 13s), Otto Eden (Under 14s), Oliver Cooke (Under 15s) and the combination of Hugo Scott, Will Pearson and Josh Hicks in the 1st XV Backline.

Fitness Centre

With Winter Sport Trials and preparation for the ISA Winter Sport Season underway, the Fitness Centre is the perfect space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday to Friday start promptly at 6:30am. Already we have had a great number of students attending the sessions and look forward to welcoming more interested students over the coming weeks!

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Round 1 Winter Sport

Unfortunately, the beautiful warm conditions we experienced on Friday were not enough to dry out the grounds of schools and councils in time for round 1 and as such we only managed to get a handful of games in. Those teams that did play were excited to put into play everything they have learned over the trials and training sessions at the end of last term. Notable performers, as nominated by the coaches for Round and 1 and 2 will be read out at assembly and will receive their certificate from the Sport department later this week. Congratulations to our Yr 6 Football teams who started off their season with some great Football at home on Saturday. Our youngest teams in Year 3 Football and Netball also got to play and with a 7-0 win to the 3A Football and a 3-3 draw to the Netball before it got called off due to wet weather.

Ballet and Dance

Lots of firsts for the Academy last week with our Bambino Ballet and Senior Hip Hop classes starting. It is clear that there are a lot of students wanting to dance and we are working hard to ensure that you all get the very best out of your experiences. There are so many reasons why we dance:

  • It makes us happy
  • It gives us confidence
  • It helps our fitness
  • It is great for posture
  • It makes us strong and flexible
  • It helps our coordination
  • It develops our spacial awareness

And the list goes on.

The problem is that without being attentive, present and focussed none of the above can be achieved, and actually you will not end up having quite as much fun.

So, message for the week is “Let’s have fun being happy, confident, fit and focussed!”
