Battle of the Bands

Winners AND Grinners!

Our epic annual Rock Battle ended with the mass consensus was that the audience were the winners of this year’s event – having enjoyed the offerings of every single act in this year’s Battle of the Bands line up. From the opening acts to the final division, we were treated to a wild, rambunctious display of talent and passion in equal measure!

Our guest artists, the Yr 5 & 6 Junior Rock Bands, kicked the night off like pros, making a bold statement to the Senior School to brace for impact when they cross the road in a year or two!

Pictured above are this year’s Overall Winners, Callum Wardman-Browne & Austin Stapleton. Arts Captain Callum offered his original rock ballad You Ain’t Coming Back’ from the keys, accompanied by Austin Stapleton on drums, the Sir Elton John meets Ben Folds-esque extravaganza capably secured the Overall Winner trophy for 2022.

Our seasoned adjudicator, Travis New, was in awe of the high level of talent on display at Redlands across all age groups.  (See the photo highlight reel at the bottom of this Note Day article!)

Hearty congratulations to the Division Winners listed below, and indeed to every performer. Special commendation to those students (and tutors) who stepped in at the last minute to fill gaps left by isolating students. Noted too are those who worked hard all term but were sadly unable to play the gig on the night. Next year awaits!

Junior & Senior Piano Competitions

Friday 29 April June 2022 6pm

Finalists are honing their performances ahead of these events that will kick off our Term 2 performance calendar. We are excited to announce that our guest adjudicator for these events will be internationally respected French-British pianist and composer, Dr Jeremy Eskenazi.

Dr Eskenazi has given concerts, seminars, workshops and lecture-recitals around the world, including the Festival Chopin in Paris, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Saint-Martin-in-the-Fields in London, the Holywell Music Room in Oxford, and the Istanbul Opera House.  Having studied at both the Paris Conservatoire and holding a PhD in Performance Practice from the Royal Academy of Music London (of which he was appointed an Associate in 2015), his expertise in both piano performance and musicology has seen him recorded prolifically and published by Cambridge University and Ut Orpheus.

Dr Eskenazi is the founder the Muzio Clementi Society which has become an authoritative source on Clementi’s significance as a composer, publisher, instrument maker, and as ‘the father of the piano’.  We look forward to his contribution and adjudication for this significant event in our annual calendar.

Instrument Collection

Don’t forget to take your instrument home over the holidays! Aside from ensuring your instrument is safely stored at home, the holidays are a wonderful opportunity to have fun on your instrument and play it just for the sake of playing it! Perform for your family, compose a piece, challenge yourself with some new goals, or catch up on your practice in readiness for a productive Term 2!

Team Thanks

The end of term provides that chance to highlight those who provide the ‘wind beneath our wings’ of our Music programs. Staff have all navigated their own challenges this term while working around the clock, striving for maximised continuity of learning and to provide door-opening opportunities for our students. We continue to be grateful for the team of Music teachers, tutors, administrators and friends that have gathered to serve the vision of Redlands Music, and for the extraordinary dedication and commitment on display as they do so.

The music department wishes all members of our Redlands community a soul-nourishing Easter break.

We look forward to seeing you for a spectacular Term 2.
