Issue 10 2022 Term 1 Week 10 - 07 Apr 2022

Community Update

It was lovely to welcome our community back on to the campus at the Twilight at Redlands event last Friday evening. We understand that we are not just a school, we are a community and we recognise the important sense of place and comfort that Redlands represents, particularly in times such as these.  My thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the event organising committee and our operations team for delivering a such a wonderful event. Despite the weather doing its best to dampen spirits it was a lovely evening enjoyed by parents, carers and staff.

At Redlands, we have a strategic commitment to sustainably managing the facilities and grounds of the School whilst continually engaging our students and the wider community in this endeavour. Over the past few years Redlands has introduced a number of new initiatives to reduce our impact on the environment.  More information on these initiatives, that include the installation of solar panels and LED lighting, biodegradable packaging, the elimination of single use plastics in school canteens and a partnership with Climate Clever Schools, can be found here.

Commencing in Term 2, a Sustainability Community Advisory Group will be formed to provide guidance and support to the Sustainability Working Group in the development of a School Environmental Management Plan and contribute to ongoing and future sustainability initiatives at Redlands. We are now seeking formal expressions of interest from parents and carers in our community who have a passion for, and significant experience in, driving tangible sustainability outcomes. For more information on the Sustainability Community Advisory Group, or to register your interest in joining, click here or email us at sustainability@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

The support from our community for the Redlands Science and Innovation Luncheon event has been wonderful. Thank you. If you haven’t already booked your seat or table then I suggest getting in quick as we only have a limited number of seats. Tickets are on sale here and selling fast. Proceeds from this event will be dedicated to the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship. Those unable to attend can still support the event through a number of different channels that include the purchase of raffle tickets, bidding on auction items or just by making a donation. For more information on the Science and Innovation Lunch and guest panellist Josh Rohan-Gould (Redlander 2016) please visit our Foundation section.

With the end of another term in sight, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) continue to actively bring our various groups together both socially and operationally. A number of end of term and term break events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful term break with your family.

From The Principal

It was an absolute joy to welcome around 380 parents onto the Junior Campus last Friday evening for Twilight in the Garden (relocated to Dunnet Hall due to the inclement weather). There was a definite buzz in the air as parents enjoyed welcoming new families to our Redlands community and making new friends, as well as catching up with old friends on campus. I sincerely thank the Redlands Parents and Friends Association for their wonderful hospitality in hosting the evening and in transforming Dunnet Hall into a twilight garden. Thank you also to Chris Blundell, Redlander 2013, and his band for the musical entertainment during the evening.

The breadth of the School’s Performing Arts program has been very evident this week with Battle of the Bands on the Senior Campus on Monday night and Red Factor, which will be held in Dunnet Hall tomorrow afternoon. In the annual Battle of the Bands competition, 21 acts performed Hits of the 90s in the Edwards Auditorium, competing in the rock band and unplugged categories, along with guest performances from two Junior School rock bands. Congratulations to all performers, the Music department and Music tutors. More details including the divisional winners can be found in the Secondary School and Music sections of Note Day. Tomorrow afternoon, 18 Junior School Dance, Vocal and Instrumental acts will take to the stage and perform in front of their peers at the annual Red Factor. What a fun way to conclude a very busy term!

On Monday this week, all Year 9 students were involved in presenting their pitches, developed through the new Industry Entrepreneurship Unit. My thanks to all staff in the HISE department for their work in bringing this unit to fruition, to enable the students to develop their skills in Entrepreneurial and Innovative Thinking. Obviously, entrepreneurship will not be a path that all students take in the future; however, the creative thinking, innovation, collaboration and critical thinking involved are all skills that are already in high demand.

On Tuesday this week, we celebrated the 50+ countries of birth of our students during International Day. The Junior Campus was awash with a multitude of colours from national costumes, while parents shared diverse cultural backgrounds of China, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Japan, Malaysia, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Tanzania, Thailand and Wales. On the Senior Campus, the lunchtime International Showcase featured student food stalls and other activities, raising funds for UNICEF Australia’s Ukraine Emergency Appeal.

Our Year 12 students enjoyed their camp this week in the Blue Mountains and were able to take advantage of some sunny weather with activities such as bush walking, mountain biking and horse riding, before the wet weather set in. The students returned to school today and this evening will enjoy an evening of celebration with their final Camp Dinner, now in Redlands Hall.

I would like to add my congratulations to our Girls Basketball teams which won the ISA Overall Girls Championship Shield for the third year in a row, and especially to the five teams which finished the season as Division Champions: 1sts, Intermediate A, Junior A, Junior B, Year 7A. Well done to all players and coaches!

I wish all families a Happy Easter and a restful break during the school holiday period and look forward to students returning to school on Wednesday 27 April in winter uniform.

Mr Stephen Webber

Photo Caption: This year’s Battle of the Bands competition saw a truly amazing array of musical talent from our students. Congratulations to this year’s overall winners, Callum Wardman-Browne and Austin Stapleton.

Meet a Panellist – Josh Rohan-Gould, Redlander 2016

Josh graduated from Redlands in 2016 and we are delighted that he will be joining us as a panellist at the Science and Innovation Luncheon. Josh is currently a Junior Space Analyst at Saber Astronautics, and describes himself as an “Aspiring astronaut and creative problem-solver with experience in Design and Quality Engineering, Sales and Start-up Operations. Studying a Double Degree in a Bachelor of Engineering – Mechatronics, and a Bachelor of Science – Computer Science.”

Josh previously volunteered as a panellist in 2021 for our Yr 10 Careers Day and his contribution was extraordinarily well received by both students and staff. We thank him for sharing some powerful and resonant messages for Redlands students as they anticipate their final subject sections and cannot wait to see what he has to share at the Luncheon.

Head of Secondary School

We have almost reached the end of another term. This week I spoke at our Term 1 Final Assembly about how well the community has navigated the vicissitudes of life and learning this term. There have certainly been some ups and some downs, some moments for great celebration and some moments where we might have experienced that deep intake of breath about the future.

On our doorstep, we’ve had flooding, and this has impacted some of us quite significantly – both students and their families and teachers. Even though for some people who have been living in drought, the rain is a good thing, for others it is extremely damaging, in an immediate sense in terms of homes and lives at risk, but also concerning because it reflects how climate change and global warming are no longer a potential threat and something which might occur in the future. But the impacts are being experienced now. I spoke at the assembly about my respect for students, such as Yr 11 student and climate activist and volunteer, Sophia Lark, who have been working with other interested young people to demonstrate directly to our elected leaders their deep concern about the ongoing lack of political action on climate change. Students like Sophia and many others, meet regularly to discuss related issues in the Environment Club.

Not far from Sydney, we have also been shocked by what has taken place in Lismore. Much of this town has washed away, people have lost their homes, their livelihoods and their sense of security. Service Captains Alex Gibbs and Charlotte Harman have reached out to the Principal of a local school in Lismore, called Trinity Catholic College and are launching a short collection drive and fundraiser to help the school in Lismore that has been severely impacted by the recent flooding. Recently, while reading the news, Alex came across images of Trinity Catholic College, and the devastation experienced at their campus and across the wider community. As their school campus is located beside the Wilson River, they experienced the brunt of the flooding, with all of their buildings being damaged. After connecting with their principal, who suggested that collecting/fundraising for basic school stationery supplies would be of most benefit, the Redlands student community has pulled together to gather the basic necessities. As the Lismore and Ballina main streets have been affected by flooding, and such supplies are hard to obtain, our students have once again responded generously by bringing in school supplies such as pens, pencils, pencil cases, exercise books, highlighters and sticky notes. Basically, anything that supports learning will support the learning of the students at Trinity Catholic College in Lismore. Thank you to the parents who have helped students locate spare stationery supplies at home. The students are asked to provide what they can to their Tutor, or directly to Ms Riley in the History and HSIE staffroom on Level 4 of the Learning Hub, before close of school on Friday.

In the Assembly on Tuesday, I personally thanked the students for their care and concern for others. The fundraising that took place for Gotcha4Life, a mental fitness charity and also the fundraising for the children impacted in Ukraine, has been generous and significant. Yr 9 student Alex Smith evoked the Redlands power of community in his assembly speech and in his collaboration with senior students to raise awareness. Our goal to raise $20,000 has almost been reached, and I want to thank parents for your support.

Camp Life

Despite the ongoing complexities posed by living in the current world, we are very lucky here at Redlands to be so supported and so privileged. As you know it was out intention, despite the pandemic, to offer opportunities this term as close to normal and typical as possible. Yr 7 camp, whilst wet, was enjoyed by Yr 7, who bravely navigated the cold, wet weather to ascend Mt Kosciusko. It was exciting too, to take Yr 8 on Camp to Yarrahapinni, but unfortunately the flooding soon impacted the camp site and they had to return to Sydney. And this morning, Yr 12 returned from their twice postponed camp, 24 hours early. The tragic incident which occurred in the Blue Mountains on Monday and the forecasted heavy rain meant that National Park was closed, thereby necessitating cancellation of the final day of activities, and so the decision was made to return them to Sydney for independent learning time and their Final Camp Dinner. Whilst away the students were involved in a number of outdoor activities, did some study and engaged in a reflection activity. They read letters from their parents (there were some tears) and were able to share their feelings and experiences at this crucial time in their development as young adults.

Tonight, in Redlands Hall, we will hold their final Camp Dinner, which is a fancy-dress themed event. Redlands staff and Yr 12 parents have collaborated to ensure that Yr 12 can enjoy this final evening of Camp, despite being in a somewhat familiar location. We are rolling out the red carpet, serving a range of delicious food and dessert, and looking forward to a night of over-the-top fashion, music and celebration. Yr 12 parents, we will send photos tomorrow!

Yr 12 Students Gold Duke of Edinburgh Hike

Taking advantage of a break in the weather, six Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award candidates embarked on an adventurous journey this week, before travelling to Katoomba for the final 24 hours of Camp. Starting from Patonga on the Hawkesbury River, the team followed the Great North Walk via Mt Wondabyne to Girrakool, exploring the area around Mooney Mooney Creek. In addition to hiking, route planning and catering, the team also improved their bushcraft skills and cleaned up the campsite by the Phil Houghton Bridge, including a rebuild of the firepit. The students accompanied by Dean of Activities, Mr Jonathan Gray, are Iris Buisman, Sienna Blake, Jemma Davies, Alexander Gibbs, Evie Farrell and Isabella Kendrigan.

Battle of the Bands

There has been a lot more to celebrate this term. Jazz in Garden, Shrek the Musical and on Monday night this week, the Music Department held the annual Battle of Bands. What an evening! Such talent and energy was on display in the Secondary School. I particularly enjoyed the Yr 7 performances. The Boss Ladies performance of Wonderwall performed by Isabella, India, Emma, Mia, Ava and Zoe was tremendous. Also, still reverberating for me was the performance of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit by Send It, comprised of  Charlie, Fred, James, Sahara and Lukas.

In Yr 9 the Rock Goats were intense with their rendition of Green Day’s When I Come Around and Cameron Simpson’s mullet wig took me straight back to the ‘90s. There were so many strong performances and all students were brave and intensely impressive. Particularly enjoyable were the unplugged performances of Hallie Hunt, Lara Wilson, Olivia Everingham, Phoebe Barnett, Sabrina Blasco and Maya Little – all delivered up truly divine performances. Our Yr 12 students were also tremendous and delivered powerful performances. A huge congratulations to all involved.

2022 Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition

Redlands is excited to offer Yr 7-12 students the opportunity to participate in the 2022 Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition. This will be held on Friday 6 May at Redlands.

The CAT competition is a one-hour problem solving competition designed to encourage student curiosity and promote multiple modes of thinking, as well as solving real-world problems. Interested students are welcome to enter this competition and previous computer programming experience is not needed.

The competition will help to identify students’ computer programming potential and is suitable for students who are interested in coding, robotics, digital creation or design and may be used as preparation for robotics competitions. Students who perform strongly in the CAT will have the further option to participate in the Oxford University Computing Challenge held later this year.

The cost of the competition is $7.50. This cost will be added to your subsequent Term Fee Statement. For more information and register your child, please click this link. Please forward any questions to wduckworth@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Happy Easter

These holidays I am looking forward to seeing Yr 12 at school for the Study Workshops and mentoring some of them in the second week on their HSC Module A essay preparation. I wish all students, parents and carers of the Secondary School community a restful and reflective Easter. Personally, I am looking forward to a long weekend away in the Blue Mountains, some good quality chocolate and catching up with family and friends. Best wishes.

International Day

Students on the Secondary Campus celebrated International Day at lunchtime on Tuesday this week in the Fahl Garden.

There were a variety of stalls led by student volunteers selling a range of sweet and savoury snacks from around the world. Students also took part in activities led by our language teachers which included designing masks, flag making, origami and fan design.

Proceeds from sales on the day totalled $2980 which will be donated to the Redlands UNICEF Ukraine Appeal.

Lismore Flooding Stationery Drive

Hi Everyone,

Charlie and I are launching a short collection drive and fundraiser to help out a school in Lismore that has been severely impacted by the recent flooding. Recently, while reading the news, I came across images of Trinity Catholic College, and the devastation they experienced at their campus and across the wider community. As their school campus is located beside the Wilson River, they experienced the brunt of the flooding, with all of their buildings being damaged by the floods. After connecting with their principal, he suggested that collecting/fundraising for basic school stationery supplies would be of most use as both the Lismore and Ballina main streets had been affected by the flooding, and such supplies were hard to obtain. Additionally, all students lost their lockers as they had been inundated, and many students’ homes were damaged or destroyed.

So, in order to help out these students and families in this challenging time, we are asking every student to bring in school supplies to their Tutor tomorrow, Friday 8 April. Boxes will be provided in every Tutor classroom. If you are unable to bring in anything, we’d really appreciate it if you were able to donate via a bank transfer to the fundraiser below, where Trinity will be able to buy supplies in bulk. Thank you for your generosity, as the donations will be of great use to those students, especially given the second round of flooding Lismore has been experiencing in the past few weeks.

Aaron Beder Film Award
Aaron submitted his short film Not So Fast to the GreenScreen Film Festival in Perth. He was contacted for his submission and honoured with the Encouragement Award for “seeing a glimmer of excellence and the promise of a film-making future.” Aaron’s film description is below:

Ejected from his intelligence organisation on spurious grounds, a cunning junior spy must recruit the help of two schoolchildren to foil a corrupt businessman’s evil plan, which attempts to brainwash every student at their school to take power over the entire world.

Aaron’s film can be found on Youtube and his acceptance of the award can be found at the 7 minute mark on the GSFF 2022 Award Show.  He was able to share his film with his Tutor Group and everyone was thoroughly impressed.  Congratulations and well done to Aaron!

Redlands UNICEF Ukraine Fundraising Appeal

Redlands is fundraising to help children and their families in Ukraine. Redlands reached their goal of $5000 in the first week and has now increased their goal to $20000 by the end of term.

The Redlands community has already supported this cause by purchasing items at the Bake Sale last week and at the International Day lunchtime stalls yesterday. You can still support by donating to the Redlands UNICEF Ukraine Fundraising Appeal.

By contributing to our fundraising efforts, you’ll be helping UNICEF provide access to basic services including water and sanitation, immunisation and health care, schooling and learning, psychosocial support, and emergency cash assistance for children.

2022 Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition

Redlands is excited to offer Year 7-12 students the opportunity to participate in the 2022 Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition.

End of Term 1 2022

Congratulations to all students and a massive ‘thank you’ to all families for a strong first term of 2022. It has been an incredibly busy term with many adjustments for students, families and staff. Yr 10 rose to higher expectations and started engaging in meaningful iGrow Coaching Conversations to reflect on their past progress and to set goals for future growth. Students strengthened their flexibility in the face of uncertain plans and challenges. Yr 10 has embraced the opportunities provided to them for a return to regular school this year and many students are eager to look ahead to plans for senior studies and begin to explore future aspirations.

Thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year and for this incredible connection between home and school that allows us to work together to help the young people in our care grow to be the best version of themselves.

Wishing all families a restful and well-deserved break with loved ones.

Easter Holidays

We wish all families a happy Easter break – it has been a really busy and challenging term for Yr 8. Ms Willis and I are proud with how the cohort have carried themselves this term and we hope that everyone has a safe, enjoyable and restful holiday. We look forward to welcoming students back refreshed and ready for Term 2.

Student Camp Reflections

Before arriving in the rusted bushlands of Yarrahapinni, Yr 8 endured a six-hour long journey on the bus. Whilst on the road, many noticed the deterioration in weather conditions the closer we were to our destination. Throughout the trip, we ventured through bush and marsh, paddled through rivers, and protected our skin from the relentless mosquitos. Overall, it was a fun and very challenging experience!

By Julian Murray

Camp was a fun adventure, even though it was raining and cold! We were able to connect closer to our peers and experience some fun activities. We learnt to be more independent by cooking our own meals and navigating through the bush, all while the relentless rain poured down on us!

By Eleanor O’Sullivan

I had a very entertaining and memorable time at camp this year. My favourite memory I have taken away from camp was surfing with all my friends. Camp was very fun but also very wet! It was torrential rain for all the activities, but it was still an amazing experience, and I am so glad I went!

Winter Uniform

A friendly reminder that all students will need to wear their winter uniforms next term – this includes blazers (to and from school). It would be great if parents can check their child/ren’s uniform before the first day back so that any alterations can be made and/or purchase anything needed from the uniform shop prior to the commencement of the term.

Day One, Term 2,

On Wednesday 27 April, all students will return to school to begin Term 2. There will be an ANZAC Assembly which will kick off at 9:45am in Dunnet Hall. Students will need to bring a face mask for the service.

Year 7

As we draw near to the end of term, it is worthwhile to reflect upon recent weeks and I feel it important to acknowledge the many and varied achievements of our Yr 7 students. It has been a full term with much to navigate for our Yr 7s as they have pivoted to meet the demands and expectations of senior schooling. It has been a busy time with many new experiences, notably Yr 7 Camp, the Peer Support Program, Study Skills, International Day and Battle of the Bands to name but a few. It has been heartening to watch new friendships form and students gain confidence in their interactions with both peers and staff. I would like to take this opportunity to warmly congratulate every Yr 7 student for their engagement, diligence and resilience during this formative time. I would like to thank parents too, for supporting your child and our Redlands staff this term. It really does take a village to raise a child. I wish you all a well deserved, relaxing and safe school holiday and I look forward to hearing all the holiday news when we return next term.

Head of Junior School

As we approach the final day of Term 1, it is important for me to acknowledge Redlands staff, students and families as we have again had to adjust and navigate new scenarios and challenges in the face of COVID. I also congratulate our many new students and staff on such a successful transition and start to their time at Redlands and many have already significantly contributed to our community.

It has been wonderful to feel an increasing sense of normalcy as the term has progressed with interschool sport and debating, concerts, choirs, camps, carnivals, excursions, incursions, parents back on campus, social events to name but a few of the highlights of a busy first term.

A hallmark of any good school is its busyness, and no one could ever say that Redlands does not meet this measure. Therefore, it is even more important for students and teachers to rest in the breaks, and I do encourage staff and families to step away from school and find things to do together that bring you happiness.

I wish everyone a restful break and safe travels, where taken, and we look forward to welcoming the students back on Wednesday 27 April.

Please note that students should be in winter uniform for Terms 2 and 3, which includes blazers every day, except on Wednesdays when we have Sport and on their class’ PE day.

Staffing News

Today we said farewell to our much-loved Numeracy Enrichment teacher, Mrs Catriona Ling, after 15 years of dedicated service. Mrs Ling has positively influenced the lives and minds of hundreds of Redlands students in her time, not to mention her strong sense of collegiality, good humour and friendship. Mrs Ling is heading overseas to spend time with family in the UK in the coming months and we look forward to her reconnecting with us later in the year when she returns.

Mrs Ling’s teaching will be taken on by Mrs Lisa Cocks, who has already spent time alongside Mrs Ling this term as part of the handover. An experienced classroom teacher with additional qualifications in gifted education and leadership, Lisa is currently a sessional tutor and tertiary supervisor in the Bachelor of Education program at Macquarie University, a role she has also fulfilled at both the Universities of Sydney and Notre Dame.

We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Ms Ciara Harding who will join us next term as a K-6 Mathematics specialist. Currently both a Year Coordinator and the Maths Coordinator at Newington College, Ciara will take our Maths support groups in the Junior School but also spend time working alongside class teachers and reviewing aspects of our mathematical teaching. Ciara is completing her Doctor of Philosophy in Education through the University of Sydney, where she has also been a Mathematics researcher amd has presented regularly at conferences.

Next term, Mrs Narelle Cheeseman will take some much-deserved long service leave and her Learning Support teaching will be taken by Mrs Melinda Griffin. Mrs Griffin has worked as a casual teacher for us, and she has previously worked as a learning support teacher at Scots College, a special education teacher in Queensland, and as a class teacher at Knox.

Finally, we also welcome Mr Soren Sharma to our Sports Administration team and Soren is well known to many students as families as he has been both a basketball and football coach.

Battle of the Bands

What a joy it was for me to enjoy our Junior School rock bands as they opened the show at Monday’s ‘Battle of the Bands’ which relived some great hits of the 90s! The coolly named Mustangs and Flaming Falcons showed great energy and enjoyment as they entertained the crowd, and it was easy to forget how young these budding rock stars are. Well done to the students involved: Andrew Budden, Leo Campbell, Ella Liira, Apollo Mangos Isaac McIntosh, Rafi Nicholas and Grayson Sloot.

International Day

On Tuesday, our Junior Campus was a sea of colour as the community celebrated our global-mindedness and diversity through our annual International Day event. It was particularly joyful to have a number of parents give up their time to share their cultural backgrounds and experiences which is always a highlight of the day and added significantly to the richness of the day.

Staffing News

We are thrilled to announce that Ms Mu Sung is expecting her first child later this year and will be taking maternity leave mid Term 3. We will be recruiting for her maternity leave replacement next term.

We say farewell to Ms Gordon tomorrow and we wish her well as she starts her new chapter. We welcome Mrs Lee-Anne Thomson to 2 Red who has recently moved to Sydney from the Northern Territory. Lee-Anne has over 20 years of teaching experience across Junior Schools in the Northern Territory and Western Australia and we are very excited to welcome her to Prep. Mrs Thomson will be communicating to 2R families at the start of Term 2 and will be organising a time for the 2R parents to come and meet her.

International Day

What an amazing International Day today as we celebrated our students’ 52 different international backgrounds. The Prep School was awash with a multitude of colours from national costumes,

Happy Easter

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Prep families and carers a very Happy Easter and to enjoy a break from routine. It has been wonderful to have had a full term of face-to-face classes and to also have welcomed parents back into classrooms for specific events.

I would also like to thank our families for supporting the Prep School by following our COVID safety guidelines this term. This has certainly kept our students and staff safe but also ensured we have been able to keep teaching face-to-face.

Term 2 Dates and Reminders

The first day of Term 2 is Wednesday 27 April. Students are to return to school in their winter uniform please. The winter uniform requirements can be found in the Student Planner and on Pulse, parents can also ring the uniform shop to find ask any specific details.

Please note that stockings for the girls are to be grey only. Girls can also wear knee high white socks if they prefer. To keep warm, the children wear their Redlands navy v-neck jumper and blazer, Redlands navy scarfs can also be worn. Please note the fleece top is to be worn with PE uniform only.

I cannot stress enough the importance of labelling every piece of your child’s clothing, especially in the winter months where jumpers and blazers are often taken off. If we see a label, we can return a piece of clothing directly.

Thanks to all families who have ensured lunch boxes are placed inside their child’s bag each day. This has been very helpful and as a result we have noticed a reduction in tripping and falling incidents occurring.

Can I please ask that on return to school that every child brings a mask in their bag as students will continue to be required to wear their mask in Assembly and Chapel times next term.

International Day

What a wonderful celebration of diversity, nationality and culture. It was fantastic to see so many children and educators celebrating their family origins. Exciting days such as this assist children to acknowledge, embrace, and respect difference. It allows us to understand our personal, cultural, and ethnic identity while simultaneously encouraging and providing settings for students to come to terms with their own culture and ethnicity.

Thank you from Mrs Huon

A big thank you to all of our wonderful families at Redlands House for a fabulous first term for 2022! The staff highly value and greatly appreciate your ongoing support and contributions to our Preschool program. I encourage you to continue to provide us with your feedback regarding day-to-day preschool life, events or activities. It is this feedback that contributes to our Quality Improvement Plan and helps us to navigate through change when necessary. AUSTRALIAN ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

View End of Season Rowing Video

Last week we had 15 students represent Redlands at the Australian Rowing Championships held in Nagambie (VIC).

Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr.12) started the campaign early racing in composite crews in both the Women’s Under 19 Double Scull and the Women’s Under 19 Coxless Quad Scull. Progressing through the heats and semi-finals, she narrowly missed out on a bronze in the Double Scull but Elizabeth and her crew racing in the Coxless Quad Scull were unchallenged by the field and finished with a very strong Silver medal.

Later in the week the Boys 1st, Girls 1st and Girls 2nd crews (the Girls 2nd was to be an Under 17 crew but unfortunately COVID required a last minute change) joined Elizabeth in Nagambie. Our Girls 2nd crew of Sophia Maxwell (Yr.12), Cat Croll (Yr.11), Charlotte Scamps (Yr.11), Mikaela Sangar-Larsson (Yr.10) and cox Zara Naismith (Yr.10) progress through the repechages to finish 2nd in the E Final, placing them 26th out of 36 crews.

The Boys 1st crew of Daniel Close (Yr.11), Pat Walker (Yr.11), Harley van der Pluijm (Yr.11), Billy Thomas (Yr.12) and coxed by Fletcher Logan (Yr.10) also raced their way through the repechages and semi-finals to progress to the B final where they finished 3rd in the B Final, placing them 9th out of 18 crews.

It was however our Girls 1st crew of Georgia Verschoor (Yr.11), Alana Mansfield (Yr.11), Briar Carter (Yr.11), Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr.12) and Charlie Harman (Yr.12) who progressed direct to Semi Finals with a dramatic win in their heat, ultimately finishing in 6th place in the A final, placing them 6th out of the best 36 crews in Australia.

Our students also managed to squeeze in a session on the Yarra River where we hope to attend a regatta early next season with some of our select senior crews.

A big thank you to our many parents who travelled to Nagambie to cheer on our crews and also to the Head of Sport, Ms Alison Cox who helped with supervision for the week, I’m sure she is a rowing coach in the making!

ROWING PRESENTATION DINNER

On Tuesday 5th April we were once again able to hold our annual Rowing Presentation Dinner with just shy of 300 people in attendance at Zest, this is the first time since 2019 that we have been able to do this. The presentation dinner is where we can reflect on the achievement of the past season along with acknowledging individual students with the rowing awards.

Wet Weather

If training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Winter Sport Trials Complete

We have now concluded our Representative Winter Sport trials in preparation for Term 2. Most of our sports had the full five sessions over the last three weeks to conduct their trials and play their matches and we have been really fortunate to have an all-weather synthetic pitch available to us midweek and on Saturday mornings. By comparison there are some IPSHA schools who have not had a chance to get any of their trials conducted with ground closures.

Students and parents can now view the teams that we will commence our Winter Season, with first training Wednesday 27 April with the first match being Saturday 30 April for Football, Rugby, Hockey and Netball.  As explained previously we play in a graded IPSHA competition and as such so too are our teams. Over the trials students in their respective sports underwent direct comparison to their peers in the same drill, skill or match. No club or rep experience, previous Redlands appointments, friendship groups takes a part in this process.

2022 Winter Sport Draft Teams

At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY                 in direct comparison to other students on the team

ATTENDANCE    any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE            this is based on behaviour and general work ethic at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Saturday Matches (Draw)

The Term 2 draw for Saturday morning matches for coaches, parents and staff will be ‘live’ in nature and will be available via the link below and sorted by round and team. Sport draws are not emailed to parents. When changes to times and or grounds come through from host schools during the week these will automatically update this draw, therefore please check this draw Friday evening prior to every game in case it has changed. I have also included the addresses of the venues within the host school to save time and stress once you arrive at a venue for example with 25 playing fields and you have to find Field 1b. Please spend some time navigating this document on your phone or device. Students are required to meet their coach at 30min prior to scheduled start time for warm up, instructions etc.

AFL Paul Kelly Cup

Congratulations to our Yr 5 & 6 boys AFL team and Mr Carter on their performance at the AFL Paul Kelly Cup during the week. The team was made up of new and experienced AFL players but came together on the day to win all their pool games to make their way to the Semi Final only to go down to Cranbrook who ended up losing to Waverley in the Grand Final. Thanks to Soren and Mr Carter for taking the boys out to the cup in what was the hottest day we have had in a while.

Ballet and Dance

Jumping into the Easter Holidays

I have thoroughly enjoyed my first term at Redlands and would like to thank all the students and teachers for the wonderful work they have put into their dancing. It is clear to me that the Academy is a special place within Redlands.

The environment is friendly and relaxed, and although the students and teachers work hard, the atmosphere in every class is joyful and full of positive energy. It is important to me that every student, whether they attend one or ten classes per week, is valued and encouraged. We are so lucky to have such a caring and committed faculty who ensure safe practice and student well-being, and I am really looking forward to everything ahead of us.

Have a great break and see you in Term 2.

Drama and Theatre

What an exhilarating and bustling Term 1. Although it has had its challenges, the students have excelled in all components despite the many obstacles they have faced. I am beyond proud of the growth and development of all Drama and Theatre students and can not wait to see what the year holds for all involved.

Shrek The Musical

On Friday last week, we farewelled the production with a Company celebration. All of the students gathered in Redlands Hall to reflect on their experience and hopes for the future whilst celebrating the commitment the outgoing Year 12 students have shown throughout their musical journey at Redlands.

Below is a final reflection and onstage picture from the closing show by Callum Wardman-Browne the 2022 Arts Captain who played Lord Farquaad.

“All three nights of Shrek were superb (not that I need to tell anyone who went to see it). It was such a thrill to be a part of, that many of us are feeling a little lost without it. I’m astounded at how in 8 weeks we all became so committed and professional. The effort from staff and students was herculean.

Once again the camaraderie between Year Groups has been a highlight of the musical and is one of its defining features. It’s one thing to be a part of such a fantastic show, but to share that experience with so many new and old friends is nothing short of magical.

Friday’s speeches were a bittersweet moment, ranging from fun and insightful reflections, like those of Zac and Gibbsy to raw, heartfelt moments from Bella and Mia.

An enormous thank you to everyone in the school community who helped make this possible from the cast, band, production and makeup students, to the teachers, including those who turned a blind eye to unsubmitted work!

If you can be a part of it next year, do. If you can see it next year, do. For your own sake, get the musical into your life.”

Battle of the Bands

Winners AND Grinners!

Our epic annual Rock Battle ended with the mass consensus was that the audience were the winners of this year’s event – having enjoyed the offerings of every single act in this year’s Battle of the Bands line up. From the opening acts to the final division, we were treated to a wild, rambunctious display of talent and passion in equal measure!

Our guest artists, the Yr 5 & 6 Junior Rock Bands, kicked the night off like pros, making a bold statement to the Senior School to brace for impact when they cross the road in a year or two!

Pictured above are this year’s Overall Winners, Callum Wardman-Browne & Austin Stapleton. Arts Captain Callum offered his original rock ballad You Ain’t Coming Back’ from the keys, accompanied by Austin Stapleton on drums, the Sir Elton John meets Ben Folds-esque extravaganza capably secured the Overall Winner trophy for 2022.

Our seasoned adjudicator, Travis New, was in awe of the high level of talent on display at Redlands across all age groups.  (See the photo highlight reel at the bottom of this Note Day article!)

Hearty congratulations to the Division Winners listed below, and indeed to every performer. Special commendation to those students (and tutors) who stepped in at the last minute to fill gaps left by isolating students. Noted too are those who worked hard all term but were sadly unable to play the gig on the night. Next year awaits!

Junior & Senior Piano Competitions

Friday 29 April June 2022 6pm

Finalists are honing their performances ahead of these events that will kick off our Term 2 performance calendar. We are excited to announce that our guest adjudicator for these events will be internationally respected French-British pianist and composer, Dr Jeremy Eskenazi.

Dr Eskenazi has given concerts, seminars, workshops and lecture-recitals around the world, including the Festival Chopin in Paris, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Saint-Martin-in-the-Fields in London, the Holywell Music Room in Oxford, and the Istanbul Opera House.  Having studied at both the Paris Conservatoire and holding a PhD in Performance Practice from the Royal Academy of Music London (of which he was appointed an Associate in 2015), his expertise in both piano performance and musicology has seen him recorded prolifically and published by Cambridge University and Ut Orpheus.

Dr Eskenazi is the founder the Muzio Clementi Society which has become an authoritative source on Clementi’s significance as a composer, publisher, instrument maker, and as ‘the father of the piano’.  We look forward to his contribution and adjudication for this significant event in our annual calendar.

Perform for your family, compose a piece, challenge yourself with some new goals, or catch up on your practice in readiness for a productive Term 2!

Team Thanks

The end of term provides that chance to highlight those who provide the ‘wind beneath our wings’ of our Music programs. Staff have all navigated their own challenges this term while working around the clock, striving for maximised continuity of learning and to provide door-opening opportunities for our students. We continue to be grateful for the team of Music teachers, tutors, administrators and friends that have gathered to serve the vision of Redlands Music, and for the extraordinary dedication and commitment on display as they do so.

The music department wishes all members of our Redlands community a soul-nourishing Easter break.

We look forward to seeing you for a spectacular Term 2.
