Book Week – Find Your Treasure
On Friday the winners of the CBCA Awards were announced. The Winner for the Picture Book Category was A Walk in the Woods, a gentle exploration of the Blue Mountains and our connections with the natural environment and each other. A reminder that we are connected to the best things in life through our senses and emotions. The Winner of the Book of the Year (Older Readers) was Take Three Girls. Written by three well-known authors, this is an exploration of the toxic effects of social media. This novel, despite the serious theme, is a clever and humorous look at “girl power” as the three girls take on the cyber bullies. However, the true winners of Book Week are the readers who have found their “treasure” in the books they have read. The “treasures” found are different for each person.
This year we celebrated in the Secondary School with two author visits. Michael Adams spoke to Yr 7 about the joys and difficulties of the writing process and gave tips for aspiring writers. His new series is The Seven Signs. The seven winners of the inaugural DARE Awards are thrust together on a life-changing journey, to cross seven continents in seven days. As they begin their adventure, they receive the first sign. They must solve the puzzle of the mysterious symbol, but they are already under attack. All seven must battle in the epic seven day countdown that will determine the fate of the world. Switching between the seven viewpoints, this fast-paced action tale is proving popular with our Yr 7 readers.
Pip Harry, the author of Because of You was Short Listed this Year for the Book of the Year (Older Readers) Award and awarded Notable Book. It explores the life choices of two teenagers, Tiny, now homeless, and Nola, a Yr 12 at a nearby high school, struggling to balance her life with the pressures of Yr 12. Again, despite the serious theme, this is a warm and hopeful book well deserving of its award. In the morning, we held a Meet the Author event in the Library. In the afternoon, Pip ran writing (scary stories) workshops for Yr 8.
