Year 8

Achievements

Congratulations to the following students who attended the annual HICES Music Festival on Sunday: Brianna Irvin (Concert Band), Callum Wardman-Browne (Honour Choir) and Eden Borrie (Symphonic Wind Ensemble).

It was wonderful to observe some of our Yr 8 Visual Arts students in action this week. The Half Face Drawing (please see student samples from Elena Martin and Austin Stapleton) was a classwork/home learning task where students were required to use half of a face in photographic form, and then complete the other half using graphite pencils and their imagination. This was a one lesson activity in class, followed by completion at home. Students should be really proud of their work.

Yr 8R took advantage of the dry weather to do experiments with static electricity in Science this week. Michael Natilli discovered that a charged balloon would stick on the ceiling of the lab and soon the entire laboratory ceiling was covered in balloons. They stayed there all day. The Yr 8s are enjoying their Science topic of Force and Energy.

Pastoral Care Focus

This week, students are moving onto Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind, from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The principle behind this habit is that mental creation precedes physical creation. All things are created twice. We create them first in our minds, and then we work to bring them into physical existence. By taking control of our own first creation, we can write or rewrite our own scripts, thus taking some control and responsibility for the outcome.
