Roseby Library

A reminder to all students to visit the library before the end of term and stock up on books for their holiday reading. We currently have lots of new books waiting to tempt keen readers!

Currently, one of my favourite books is the ‘Velocity of Reading: Letters to a young Reader’. Edited by Maria Popova & Claudia Bedrick  (028.55 POP). This book collects letters to young readers, over 250 in fact, each letter is paired with a wonderful illustration that share the love of reading.

Here is a quick sample:

Jane Goodall especially enjoyed reading about Doctor Doolittle and Tarzan of the Apes. When she was ten, she decided she wanted to go to Africa and live with animals and write books about them. Which is exactly what she did.

It might be advice like “Don’t forget: You don’t have to finish every book you start. “ from Amanda Palmer.

Or Ann Pratchett’s “The wonder of books is they are worlds we enter into alone, and yet at the same time they can connect us to other people.”

Neil Gaiman is also  featured “ A writer can fit a whole world inside a book”. ……“Somewhere , there is a book written just for you. It will fit your mind like a glove fits your hand . And it’s waiting “.

Neil Gaiman has written passionately about the importance of reading, follow this link to read more.

“Fiction can show you a different world. It can take you somewhere you’ve never been. Once you’ve visited other worlds, like those who ate fairy fruit, you can never be entirely content with the world that you grew up in. Discontent is a good thing: discontented people can modify and improve their worlds, leave them better, leave them different.”

We look forward to students coming up to the library and stocking up with food for the mind and spirit for a wonderful Christmas Holiday.
