Community Update

School archives are an essential and important component of the Community Engagement team’s function. The collection and preservation of our legally, intellectually, culturally and historically important records and artefacts functions as the memory vault for Redlands staff, students, families, friends and associates, past and present.

Information and content from our Archives are used for a wide range of purposes by the School and its community, including teaching, legal purposes, building projects, development and alumni events and school publications. Examples of records and items held in the collection include trophies, uniforms, student work books, official correspondence, programs, school photos, architectural plans, prize books, master plans, school magazines and publications, student enrolment registers and prize lists.

Thanks to the donations made by our alumni, members of staff and the wider Redlands community, our Archives are fortunate to have a rich and diverse collection of material which comprehensively documents the history of the School.

As Redlands continues to digitise and future-proof the School’s archives, we welcome donations of items relating to the School, including more contemporary items as these will eventually become tomorrow’s history.  Please note that space is limited and any items accepted for donation are on the condition of appraisal of the Archivist.

Tomorrow, Friday 26 November, we invite our Secondary School students to bring their used textbooks into School where they can be sold or donated.  Students will also be able to submit order forms to buy current edition textbooks for 2022. A volunteer team of parents from the RPFA will be set up at the Gerard St entrance after school tomorrow to assist students with collection and ordering. Students can collect their Second Hand Text Book orders from the same spot on Monday, 29 November prior to the start of school.

The Second Hand Text Book Sale affirms Redlands standing commitment to sustainably managing our resources whilst engaging our students and the wider community in this endeavour.  This sale not only reduces paper waste, it also keeps the cost of textbooks down for our families and provides charitable organisations with additional resources for distribution to communities that will continue to benefit from them.  Click here for more information and book lists.

Please note that previous textbook editions that are no longer used at Redlands will be donated to other communities who will welcome and use them. Transactions will be recorded within your school accounts next year and cash cannot be accepted.

It was a pleasure to attend the recent Redlanders Alumni Association Annual General Meeting where a number of new committee members joined this active and engaged leadership group.  To read more about the strategic work of our Foundation and Alumni office, that includes an updated Committee list, click here.

With the end of another School year approaching the Redlands Parents and Friends Association continue to actively bring our various groups together. A number of social events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here.

My thanks to all of the important groups of committed and generous volunteer members for their assistance and support through 2021. In particular Michele Tea, outgoing President of the RPFA, Grahame Petersen, Chair of the Foundation Advisory Committee and Jennifer Farrell, President of the Redlanders Alumni Association, thank you for your leadership and guidance in another challenging year for community engagement.

I have been overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of our community in my first year at Redlands and look forward to meeting more of our parents and carers through 2022, in the hope that we can deliver our traditional event calendar that commences early in Term 1 with Twilight in the Garden.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful break with your family over the festive season and Summer holidays.

Keep well and stay safe.

Sailing

Our Redlands sailors have been back on the water for the past few weeks, battling strong winds and challenging weather conditions. Last weekend was no exception when our year 9, 10 and 11 sailors competed in the first round of the Redlands Sailing Series. Racing in over 50 km/h winds, Katina Casimaty and her crew Dasha Sychova were the overall champions of the day. They were closely followed by Alissandra Braden and her crew Isabella Treloar and Alex Gibbs and his crew Sholto Mirrlees-Black.

This Saturday, 27 November, will be the final training session of 2021. This week we have some wet weather forecasted, however sailing will still be on. Please be sure to bring some warmer sailing gear and a raincoat to training this week. In the event that the weather prevents us from being able to go on the water, the training session will be shortened and we will run a fitness and theory session onshore. If this occurs, an email will be sent out the morning of the training session notifying everyone about the earlier finish time

It is an opportunity for students to get in their first regatta in what has been an interrupted season so far. All suitable racing for our students is limited to the morning half of the regatta, meaning that this will be a half day regatta and transport will be provided. Further details have been emailed to families already that include the signup link below:

On Saturday 4 December from 7.00-9.00am we will be holding a mock regatta for our Year 7 students at Davidson Park which is located just under Roseville Bridge. Racing will be conducted internally with the coaches and myself selecting a number of different crews that we think will be evenly match to gain valuable race experience. Crews will battle it out against each other across a distance of 500m running the length of the park that will provide ample viewing opportunities for spectators. Transport is not provided for this however the rowing staff will have the boats and equipment mostly ready when the students arrive. There is also ample parking available at Davidson Park.

We appreciate that some families will already be taking advantage of the school holidays and have departed Sydney, so we ask that all Year 7 rowing students list their availability using the signup form found at the link below:

JANUARY ROWING CAMPS

Detailed information about the January camps is forthcoming but will most include a slight date change pushing both camps back a few days. This is a reflection to our need to relocate the camps to Mosman due to the Department of Education still having restrictions in place for overnight excursions as part of the Level 3 Covid plans. We had hoped that there would be more information about the holiday period but this has not been updated yet.

The new camp dates are as follows:

SENIORS (2021 Year 9, 10 & 11): Thurs 13/1 to Sat 15/1 & Mon 17/1 to Wed 19/1

JUNIORS (2021 Year 7 & 8): Thurs 20/1 to Sat 22/1

Non-Representative Sport

We hope students have enjoyed the variety of Non-Rep sports on offer this term. There will be no Non-Rep sport during Term 4, Week 9. In Term 1, 2022 we plan to return to the usual non-rep schedule if the restrictions allow for us to do so. Further information will be provided closer to the Term 1 return date. Wishing all families a safe and enjoyable holiday break.

Fitness Centre

To finish off the last week of the school sear the Redlands Fitness Centre will be celebrating with a Monday Morning Session dedicated to the Year Group with the largest attendance throughout the year – our mighty Year 7s.

It has been fantastic to see the students return to the Fitness Centre over the last couple of weeks and all of our Age-Groups have had some standout performers. A special highlight must go to the incredible Heid de Saxe (Year 7) who this week set a personal best, deadlifting an amazing 72.5kg for a whopping 11 reps! Both Luke and I would like to congratulate Heidi for achieving such a feat especially considering all of the work she has put in over Lockdown and into the Term 4 sessions.

Students must sign up via the Form on Redlands iLearn which will go live first thing tomorrow morning. Capacity for the session will be 20 Students so get in quick.

Luke and I could not be more excited to finally have a morning session after so long.

There will also be an additional session for our Year 8s on Monday afternoon as well.

From The Principal

As I write the final Note Day article for the year, we are looking forward to our end-of-year celebration events and with Christmas approaching and our Carols services this week, we are reminded of the hope and joy in the celebration of the birth of the baby Jesus. As we give thanks for the many gifts we share, it is a time to focus on the importance of serving and giving to others. Our Service Captains Charlotte Harman and Alex Gibbs have been busy promoting the Anglicare Toys’ n’ Tucker program and I encourage all members of the community to contribute to this most worthy cause.

A highlight of this week has been the Year 9 Midawarr Indigenous Cultural Immersion Program, which has focused on the theme of ‘Country as Teacher’. The program, run in partnership with Culture College, the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land and First Nations people from NSW, has again been possible through the creative use of technology to connect with and learn from the Yolngu Elders. The opening and closing ceremonies were both memorable events that bookended three days of deep connection and learning for our students in partnership with First Nations people across our vast land.

Congratulations to our Junior School Debating team who recently found out that they have made it through to the Grand Final of the Australian competition, which is an incredible achievement. We are proud of the team and wish them well for the final – Sam Ashby, Caroline Brown, Kai Feldman, Alex Heller, George McIntosh, Chloe Petering and Rafael Rolon, supported by Junior School Debating Coordinator Joel Watkins.

As many of you are already aware, Ms Karen Martin is retiring at the end of this year from her position as Head of the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy. During her 17 years of service to the School, she has led the Redlands Dance Program to great heights, becoming one of the most highly esteemed in Sydney.

We are pleased to announce that Gillian Revie MacLeod will be commencing as the new Head of the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy in 2022. Gillian is a highly esteemed director, teacher and performer who trained with the Royal Ballet School from the age of 11 before having a 23 year career with the Royal Ballet Company, dancing a vast repertoire of soloist and principal roles, then tutoring graduate students at the English National Ballet School. Gillian has continued to be a guest artist for the Australian Ballet Company, an occasional teacher and mentor with the Australian Ballet Company and the Sydney Dance Company and a guest teacher for the Royal Ballet School in some of their programs throughout Asia. Gillian already has a strong understanding of the Redlands culture and values as her daughter, Belle, is a Redlander from the Class of 2020.

I have often remarked this year how much we have appreciated the positive support and constructive feedback from the Redlands community. The challenges and uncertainty that we have faced has further strengthened the sense of community in the School, which has been wonderful to witness. May you and your families enjoy a relaxing and peaceful Christmas and holiday period together.

Mr Stephen Webber

Foundation

Thank You For Your Support

Last the week the Second Hand Uniform Sale, the final one for this year, was organised. A number of volunteers made this initiative possible under the leadership of Maria Kinsela, Yr 11 parent and just over $4,300 were raised.

This initiative has a long history and was started by a previous Board Director with the vision to support students who would not be able to come to Redlands. This is now so well embedded in our culture due to contributions of many volunteers supporting our Sustainability program. This year we raised almost $21,000 towards means-tested scholarships.

I would like to thank all Redlands families, alumni, volunteers and sponsors who have so generously supported us this year by giving up your time, participated in fundraising efforts and/or contributed to our tax deductible funds and supported the Belinda Oxley Scholarship.

Special mentions and thanks to:

  • Foundation Advisory Committee members
  • RPFA Committee members, FOGs and PCGs
  • Redlanders Alumni Association Committee members
  • All our Volunteers, who have given up their time in numerous capacities

In a very challenging year, we are extremely grateful for every effort and contribution. No matter how large or small, every bit matters!

Alumni Update and Redlanders AGM

The Redlanders Alumni Association AGM took place on Thursday, 18 November 2021 at 6.30 pm via Zoom. The Principal, Stephen Webber updated the group on recent development and also presented the key pillars of the five-year strategic plan. In his address he acknowledge the contributions of our alumni community and welcomed all the assistance which was initiated by the Association.

Kim Flatman, Alumni and Community Engagement Coordinator, acknowledged the work and support of the Redlanders Association and highlighted the strategic focus for our alumni relations:

  • Demonstrate benefits of Alumni network
  • Build on initiatives started with Career Advisory to create opportunities for SS students and Young Alumni [Industry visits, Mentoring, Internships, and Guest Speakers]
  • Showcase Alumni across segments and regions on social media
  • Grow international and regional connections
  • Increase connectivity and reach with Redlanders

Grant Birse, Head of Community Engagement, assisted with the election of the Committee and Office bearers for 2022. Congratulations to the 2022 Committee!

Vale David Day, Redlands Director of Development 2005-2015

It is with sadness that we advise that our previous Director of Development, David Day, passed away this morning after a long illness. David was a valued staff member for over 10 years, from June 2005 to December 2015, and during that time made a significant contribution to building the Redlands Foundation to support the long term direction of the School. Under David’s stewardship, our Redlands community contributed significant funds to enable the development of the Roseby Science Building (Liggins Atrium) in 2005, the Redlands Fitness Centre in 2009 and the first two years of the New Learning Hub Capital Appeal. David also led the growth in the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize, overseeing its move from the Mosman Art Gallery to the National Art School. David will be well-known to many in our Redlands community and we send our condolences to David’s family, including daughters Katina and Sophia (Class of 2009).

We wish all members of our community a very Merry Christmas and relaxing and enjoyable break.

Thank You

As my family and I stop to celebrate Thanksgiving today, I would like to take this opportunity to first thank all the wonderful teachers, tutors, advisors and support staff for their hard work and support for our students in another challenging year. I would also like to thank all those amazing parents and carers who have worked tirelessly this year to keep our community connected.

We’d like to put together another incredible team of parents and friends to continue to build a strong and positive Redlands community for 2022. If you are interested in being a year parent for Secondary School, please signal your interest by clicking here. (All current parent reps are welcome to return, of course!) For Junior School and Prep School, we will be in contact with you at the beginning of next year once we know which classes each student is in.

Head of Secondary School

Being grateful and thanking those who have supported us in 2021

Late last week I reminded Yr 7 to make sure they penned Christmas Cards to their teachers. Teachers don’t need presents but they do love a kind word and a heartfelt thank you. I have a couple of gorgeous cards on my desk already – and of course they are from my delightful Yr 7 English class. I am looking forward to spending time with them next Tuesday in our final lesson for the school year, as they are screening the films they have been making over the past few weeks of this term with Mr Parekh. There are many projects being finalised across the Secondary School in these final few days of term. This week’s On Country with Yr 9 students has also provided great fulfilment and an opportunity to learn from others. This morning’s session was particularly powerful for Yr 9 as they heard stories directly from Arnhem Land.

There is so much to be thankful for this year. It’s definitely been a strange year and one filled with an unexpected lockdown, but there has still been much joy, surprise and positivity. At the conclusion of today’s Secondary School Note Day section, we have included a Parent Holiday Guide and a Student Holiday Guide. These have been created by our counselling team and we hope you find them useful as you navigate the weeks of holiday ahead.

It’s been a real joy to get to know the Redlands community this year. I wish you all a very safe, healthy and happy holiday period.

Secondary School Students in the Cremorne Community

This week we have asked the Secondary School students to be mindful of their actions in the local community, specifically as they leave the campus at the end of the school day. We’d like our neighbours, our local shop owners, and members of the public to see the wonderful young people we spend time with each day. Unfortunately, we have had reports of some Redlands Secondary School students gathering in large groups, hanging out at the local shops (without wearing masks), littering, running around the McDonalds and 7-Eleven car park, and generally being disrespectful of others.

In the final few days of this term, we are supporting our students to be the best versions of themselves, both inside and outside of school. Students have been asked to avoid gathering in large groups, and to travel directly home, straight after school. This ensures their own safety in the local community and reflects a mindful and respectful attitude towards others. Unless attending an event or scheduled activity, parents should expect their child/ren home straight after school and encourage them to avoid the local Cremorne shops and areas. We still have one week of HSC examinations and we want to avoid our students mixing with others, so that we can conclude this year in a safe way, and by putting the community first.

A significant part of our COVID-19 Safe Plan has been cohorting – keeping cohorts separate. As well as a staggered school day, we have significantly limited mixing between the Senior and Junior Campus. Secondary School students, apart from organised and teacher-supervised Dance and Sport activities, are not to enter the Junior Campus, play on the oval or mingle with Junior or Prep students, who are not their siblings. If your child wishes to play after school, we’d appreciate you supporting them to do this in a park near to your home, and not on the Junior School campus. If your child wishes to gather with their friends after school, we’d appreciate you supporting them to do this at your home, rather than the carpark of McDonalds or Woolworths. We have a good reputation in the local community and we’d like to conclude the year positively and strongly. Apart from Thursday Sport afternoons, the students are all dismissed at 3.20pm. They should be home not long after. Thank you for working with us to keep everyone safe and to ensure our reputation in the community remains strong, as we conclude the 2021 school year.

Christmas part-time job?

Currently both Cremorne Woolworths and the McDonalds on Military Rd are hiring. Both businesses are looking for teenagers to work over the Christmas period. What a great way to make some pocket-money and give back to the community! Students aged 14 and over can apply by just walking in and saying ‘I am interested!’

Next Week

Monday is a typical school day for all students in the Secondary School.

Tuesday is our penultimate school day for the 2021 year and concludes with an Assembly, led by Yr 12, in Redlands Hall and streamed to Yr 7-10 in Tutor Groups. At the Assembly we will welcome Dr Ali Walker as our Guest Speaker. Dr Ali will conclude the Yr 10 Work and Wellbeing two-day session earlier in the day, and remain behind to join us for our final Assembly in 2021.

Wednesday is the Secondary School Speech Day. All students are expected to attend this celebratory school event from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Students receiving an award are to arrive at Dunnet Hall at 1.30pm (wearing full Summer Uniform with Blazer) and all other students are to arrive at the Senior Campus at 1.30pm (students on Senior Campus may wear their neat PE uniform).

Hampers for those in need

Have you donated yet? The Anglicare Christmas Toys ‘n’ Tucker drive has raised $4659 so far, but we still need your help! Service Captains, Charlie and Alex are hoping to raise $5000 by Speech Day on the 1st of December, and if every family in the Secondary School donated just $10, we’d be well over that goal! Please be specific if your child is unwell. When emailing to inform us of a student absence, please clearly outline your child’s symptoms. If you tell us that your child is ‘unwell’, with no explanation of symptoms, we will assume a Covid-19 test is required. Additionally, we kindly ask that you are vigilant about sharing the negative Covid-19 test with ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au before your child is returned to school. Unfortunately, if this does not happen, parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child from school. Our priority is our community’s safety and our capacity to enable our Yr 12 students to sit their examinations. Currently we have students sitting IB examinations and from next Tuesday, the HSC examinations begin. We sincerely appreciate the cooperation of parents in following safe practices as we move through this next stage of the pandemic.

‘All you need is love’ the words of the Beatles famous song could easily be the theme of the month ahead as we approach and celebrate Christmas. God created in us a need for love. It is at our core to long for love and we only thrive as we experience love from those around us. God responds to this need to give us his love and compassion. He did this supremely in the baby in the manger.

Student in Prep and Junior school have their Christmas celebration today and the Senior school have a celebration tomorrow morning to reflect and rejoice in the message of Christmas. Christmas is God’s manifesto of Love. He acted because of his love for the world to become one of us, in this babe. Jesus embodied love as he related to people of different ethnicities and genders, towards the powerful and the vulnerable, towards rich and poor alike. His actions and words modelled self-sacrificing extravagant love.

The announcement of Jesus birth shows that God’s intention was to act to save because of his love. The Angel said ‘Today in the town of David a Saviour is born to you; He is the Messiah the Lord’ this foretold the purpose and mission of love, Jesus’ life and death would achieve.

The greatest symbol of God’s love for us is an empty cross. Jesus, the pure and good, bowed his head to death on that cross. His death was our death, his blood was shed for us. However, the Lord Jesus rose again and is no longer on the cross. The empty tomb and cross shows he has achieved the path of salvation for all people. His manifesto of Love reaches out with this offer of restoration and joy for each person.

Never has a baby carried so much expectation, so much joy, so much love for the world. As we celebrate with family and friends, with presents and food may our hearts be warmed by his love and may we learn to love like he loves with self-sacrificing extravagant love.

God bless you and your family this Christmas.

Reminder that donations for both Anglicare by online giving and Matthew Talbot at reception are accepted till Friday afternoon.

Roseby Library

A reminder to all students to visit the library before the end of term and stock up on books for their holiday reading. We currently have lots of new books waiting to tempt keen readers!

Currently, one of my favourite books is the ‘Velocity of Reading: Letters to a young Reader’. Edited by Maria Popova & Claudia Bedrick  (028.55 POP). This book collects letters to young readers, over 250 in fact, each letter is paired with a wonderful illustration that share the love of reading.

Here is a quick sample:

Jane Goodall especially enjoyed reading about Doctor Doolittle and Tarzan of the Apes. When she was ten, she decided she wanted to go to Africa and live with animals and write books about them. Which is exactly what she did.

It might be advice like “Don’t forget: You don’t have to finish every book you start. “ from Amanda Palmer.

Or Ann Pratchett’s “The wonder of books is they are worlds we enter into alone, and yet at the same time they can connect us to other people.”

To sample more go to:

https://www.themarginalian.org/2018/11/20/a-velocity-of-being-letters-to-a-young-reader

Neil Gaiman is also  featured “ A writer can fit a whole world inside a book”. ……“Somewhere , there is a book written just for you. It will fit your mind like a glove fits your hand . And it’s waiting “.

Neil Gaiman has written passionately about the importance of reading, follow this link to read more.

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/oct/15/neil-gaiman-future-libraries-reading-daydreaming

“Fiction can show you a different world. It can take you somewhere you’ve never been. Once you’ve visited other worlds, like those who ate fairy fruit, you can never be entirely content with the world that you grew up in. Discontent is a good thing: discontented people can modify and improve their worlds, leave them better, leave them different.”

We look forward to students coming up to the library and stocking up with food for the mind and spirit for a wonderful Christmas Holiday.

Year 11

It is hard to believe that we have come to the end of Term 4 and such a unique year. I want to thank our Yr 11 Pastoral Team, both current and those who have left us this year. Our Tutors – Luca Signorelli, Lissette Laurel, Ruth Apple, Karin Sandyford, Melissa Melrose, Michael Warrell, Mathew Owen, Grant Wrighter – as well as our new Assistant Year Advisor, Richard Millham, have all gone above and beyond this year with the support they have given to each student, in particular during times of Remote Learning. We are sadly farewelling Luca at the end of this term as he returns to the UK to live – he will be missed by Cowper Blue. I also want to thank parents for their continued support of me in the Year Advisor role for this wonderful group of young adults. I am very much looking forward to being involved in their final year – the Class of 2022!

Yr 12 Camp

As you will be aware, we are excited to be going on Yr 12 Camp (postponed from Yr 11) in the second week of Term 1 (7-11 February). This camp is a wonderful experience for the year group to kick-start their final year of school and to return to campus in Week 3, invigorated and inspired. This week I released the camp groups to the students to enable them to know what plans they may need to make over the holidays (such as horse-riding or mountain biking practice!).

We have tried to accommodate everyone’s choices as much as possible, but some may not have been given their first choice due to either limitations in numbers and/or not correctly submitting their form. I have asked students to speak to me directly should they have any concerns, as they are in Yr 12 and should be taking responsibility for themselves.

This camp, as are all Redlands camps, is compulsory and we ask that you actively encourage your children to attend in Week 2, as otherwise they will miss a memorable experience that ends with a wonderful formal dinner on the last night at the High Country Campus.

M’Lop Tapang Fundraising Event

Yr 12s 2022 are fundraising for M’Lop Tapang, a Cambodian non-profit organisation that provides aid to Cambodian families in the form of education, food-provision and financial support. We have a GoFundMe where everybody can vote for whether Mr Millham, Assistant Year Advisor, shaves his beard or not! If the fund-raising goal is met, Mr Millham will be shaved at school this Friday.

Redlands has had a strong connection with M’Lop Tapang over the years, and all of the money raised will hopefully help Cambodian students, families, businesses and communities. Make sure to get involved to make an impact in the lives of these people! https://gofund.me/38fbed12

Anglicare Christmas Appeal

So far over $4500 of the $5000 goal has been raised by Redlands in the Anglicare Christmas Appeal! This is an amazing achievement and it is hoped that we meet the goal in the next few days. Please donate here: https://gofund.me/2e6d8ee4

Toys’ n’ Tucker is an initiative of Anglicare Sydney which tries to share the joy of Christmas by providing food and gifts for those who might otherwise go without. This past year has been more challenging than ever before, especially for the most disadvantaged in society. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we’re unable to run the Toys’ n’ Tucker drive as usual, with every family bringing donations to be packed by Anglicare into hampers for families in need. Instead, this year, Anglicare is encouraging all of us to donate, and they will be able to organise the hampers.

Student reflection: BurnBright Altitude Day 2021 – Jamison Houchell

Last Friday, Yr 10 participated in the BurnBright Altitude Day. A key takeaway for me from Yr 10’s BurnBright session was the strength and connection that our Year Group has. BurnBright helped me to understand that as a cohort we may have differing opinions, but we still can have a shared goal and support each other in reaching it. This was really highlighted to me in an activity where a statement was given and in groups we held up cards stating whether we strongly agreed, agreed, disagreed or strongly disagreed. In my small group I found that even though we disagreed on some opinions, we still found a way to see eye to eye after explaining our thoughts. I think that with the help of BurnBright we all feel closer as a Year Group than ever and that the next two years will not be a challenge as individuals but rather a goal that we will all reach together.

Peer Support Leadership Day reflection – Phoebe Vandekreeke

On Monday, Yr 10 took part in leadership activities in year groups as an opportunity to experience running a peer support session as part of the 2021 Yr 10 Peer Support Leadership Day.
The sessions were composed of a number of activities, from individual pen-on-paper brainstorming to group-led games. Although these activities seemed simple enough, they encouraged us to engage our critical thinking skills, work as a team, negotiate with each other, prioritise and act as leaders, keeping groups organised and efficient. We were encouraged to look at leadership in broad terms and from a personal perspective, examining the skills and values necessary to act as effective leaders and work with Yr 7 in 2022 to refine specific skills needed for their high school transition. The games we took part in were a great introduction into what we’ll be doing next year as Peer Support leaders, and we look forward to developing fun and engaging activities for the incoming  Yr 7s as they make their transition to the Redlands Secondary School.

Upcoming Work Exploration Day and Wellbeing Day

The Yr 10 Work Exploration Day and the Wellbeing Day are taking place next Monday and Tuesday in the final week of the term. The Work Exploration day will run on Monday, 29 November and students will be required to wear professional work attire. The Careers and University Advisors will be working with Year 10 as they participate in career based activities including an alumni panel, resume writing, interview techniques and mock interview practice with a key member of staff and executive.

The Wellbeing Day will run on Tuesday November 30 and students will be required to wear their sports uniform for the duration of the day. Yr 10 will have the opportunity to participate in a range of wellbeing activities in the morning (Mindful Meditation, Youthful Yoga, Feel Good Fitness, Wellbeing Walk, and Organic Origami), followed by group connection activities. In the final session, students will have the honour of listening to a presentation by Human Connection Scientist, Dr Ali Walker who will be visiting Redlands to talk with Yr 10 in person. Ali is the founder of Ality, a company that designs personal assessment tools to optimise individual and team performance. Ali has worked as a specialist advisor to organisations such as Google Australia, Suncorp, Australia Post, and NSW Ambulance among others. Ali designs and delivers executive leadership programs that have effectively displayed measurable improvements in performance- based outcomes. Ali is the author of the bestselling book Get Conscious: How to stop overthinking and come alive. Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts/Law (UNSW), Master’s degree in International Law & International Relations (UNSW) & a Doctorate in collective behaviour (ANU).

Year 9

Midawarr Program

Yr 9 have had the privilege and opportunity this week to immerse themselves in the much anticipated Year 9 Midawarr Program. On the first day of the camp, Yr 9 were treated to a moving, spiritual Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country. Smoking ceremonies are an ancient custom among Indigenous Australians in which native plants are burnt to produce smoke and acknowledge the ancestors and pay respect to the land, waters and sea of the country. The smoke is believed to have healing and cleansing properties. It was Redlands first-ever Smoking Ceremony so it was a privilege for our Year 9 students to be part of such a significant cultural event that connected the Indigenous community with our Redlands community.

So far this week, students have connected and had meaningful conversations with Yolngu people in north-eastern Arnhem Land via zoom to discuss the laws and customs of Indigenous people. Students have also had practical opportunities over the last two days, participating in Gawura activities which involved Dance, Ochre painting and hunting tools, along with Yolngu Matha – Communication and Sign Language and Djalkirri Rom – learning about Yolngu lore and customs. Students also had the opportunity to complete artworks with Kate Constantine, a proud Gadigal artist who was born and bred on own Country in Sydney who shared her story of culture and identity.

On the first day of the Program, Yr 9 had to write their own Acknowledgment of Country.’
This gave Year 9 an opportunity to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

Below are some fine examples of Acknowledgement to Country by our Yr 9 students.

Abhi Singh Acknowledgement to Country

I acknowledge that we are living on the land which is/was inhabited by the Commeraygal people of the Eora Nation. I respect that we have a relationship in which we see each other as equals, hence why I’m grateful to learn at a school with so many external connections. It is a great (but sometimes overwhelming) opportunity when we get to learn and see their culture up close.

Antonia Morgan, Winter Penney and Miss St Clair Acknowledgement to Country

Paying our respects to land and embrace and protect and care and nourish the surrounding land and nature. Thank you country for providing us with life-changing knowledge and experience, we embrace these privileges and acknowledge that mother nature is powerful and loving. We respect and acknowledge the land in which we learn. We are grateful for the vast benefits our country provides.

End of Year Project-Based Learning Presentation for Y9 Japanese classes

Students have been individually working on a project where they considered their own interests associated with Japanese culture. Students were able to present their projects to other Year 9 Japanese classes. Students demonstrated creativity and talent through the creation of a Japanese cookbook, Japanese Language Board Games, Japan Travel brochure, Cartoon drawing, Origami Art, Analysis of techniques used by Japanese gymnasts and rock climbers.

STEAM

What’s your 2040? – Where will you be in 2040?

  • Have you thought about the future and what it may be like?
  • In an ever-changing world and society what might some of our future challenges be?
  • How are you going to protect the future?

2021 STEAM Focus – Coral reefs around the world are facing many challenges…so, what can we do to save our Great Barrier Reef?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9ionVV9SxI&t=1s

Australia has one of the largest ocean territories in the world, a resource that remains largely unexplored and unknown. Many of us think of the marine environment as something to be used, taken from or added to, used for leisure & sporting activities, obtaining food or mining resources such as oil and gas, sand and even fresh water. All habitats and organisms in the marine environment are inextricably linked by the one thing they have in common, the water they live in. This is a major resource that needs protecting because if the quality of the ocean water suffers so does everything that depends on it, including us.

Over the two STEAM Learning Days, students used the following Solution Fluency format to think creatively to solve the problem. They were required to define the problem, design and deliver a solution and then evaluate the process and outcome.

Students had to identify ONE area to focus on from the following:

Each group were then required to produce a 3-minute video titled Picture 180.

The Winning Group – Megan Kirkpatrick, Elenor Blankenstein and Sophie Yu.

“In order to save the Great Barrier Reef, we wanted to focus on reducing the amount of Crown of Thorns Starfish which are an invasive species that feeds on coral. Because of the higher levels of nutrients in the water due to agricultural runoff, and higher ocean temperatures, these starfish have been thriving. Consequently, the coral populations have been reduced dramatically, to dangerously low levels. Originally, we considered creating a contagious disease to kill them off, but we then realised that not only would it be difficult to engineer a completely new virus attuned to a species whose immune system is not well documented, the possible repercussions were dangerous: the virus could also infect other sea animals. We also thought about creating a machine to kill them, but we figured that this solution would not be long term, and the starfish would just regenerate, making it a difficult plan to sustain. Our final idea was to genetically engineer male Crown of Thorns Starfish that were sterile, and released ‘dummy sperm’ by altering their genetic codes, and therefore the proteins that they constructed. These sperm would not fertilise the eggs of the female during reproduction, but would trick her into thinking reproduction was successful. During the process of creating our idea and the presentation, we learnt about the basics of genetic engineering and the Crown of Thorn starfish reproduction process, but most importantly, we learnt about the Great Barrier Reef, about its size, beauty and importance, as well as the threats it faces. This project has made us value the reef more, and realise that if we don’t do something now, Australia’s own wonder of the world may not be here for much longer”.

Holiday InquiryWhat difference could I make?

As students venture on holidays, with the likely chance of spending time by the ocean, on the ocean or even flying across the ocean, they are to ponder on these inquiry questions and think about how we could look after our oceanic environments locally, nationally and around the world.

  • Should we view our ocean as a resource or a responsibility?
  • Who thinks about the myriad of organisms that live in the diverse ocean environments?
  • Do we even know what lives there and how modern human lifestyles are impacting on them?
  • What lies beneath the surface? How can we sustain and protect this myriad of organisms?
  • What could you do to make a difference?

Parenting, alcohol, parties and sleepovers in Yr 9

Why this year group can be so challenging and the importance of putting things into place now.

Thursday, 20 January 2022
7.00-8.30pm (AEDT)

If you’re a parent of a child about to begin Year 9 it’s important to prepare yourself for issues around sleepovers, parties and gatherings. Putting things into place now can prevent potential problems in the year (and years) ahead.

This presentation will focus on the positive influence that parents can have on their child’s drinking behaviour, even during adolescence, as well as the barriers that they may face during this time. Peer influence is a significant issue at this time and it is important for parents to have clear rules and boundaries in the area of sleepovers, parties, gatherings and alcohol.

This presentation will also examine the latest data on Australian teen drinking behaviour and the growing evidence on the risks associated with this practice.

Expectations

As the holidays approach, it becomes harder to focus in school. With this in mind, it is important for students to stay focused during these last few weeks as their lives tend to become busier with the end of year celebrations and events. It is crucial for students to continue to review materials for classes to prepare for the demands of Yr 9. We want to make sure students finish the school year as strong as they can and these few steps below can help them stay focused till the end of the year.

From the Counselling Team

IMPORTANT DATES

1 December End of Yr 8 Term 4

31 January Start of Yr 9 Term 1, 2022.

We have celebrated many successes this year. Our Yr 8 Staff and Pastoral Care Team are privileged each day to participate with our cohort’s academic journey. We recognise and applaud just how hard they have worked, and the outstanding effort they have consistently applied. We celebrate their achievements whether they be great or small, and share with pride the progress they have made with their learning.

I would like to thank the wonderful members of our Yr 8 Pastoral Team (Ms Vanessa Wang, Ms Jessica Carroll, Ms Kate Moore, Ms Rachael Riley, Mr Cameron Ellis, Ms Charlotte Putman, Ms Liz Williamson, Ms Martina Blasco, and Ms Chloe Vandervord). Throughout the year, they have collaborated to inspire, support and encourage our students. The creation of opportunities provided for each individual to be the best version of themselves has been wonderful watch, and they have endeavoured to instil in Yr 8 the courage and motivation to make an effort, and character to seek and endure challenging tasks.

Year 7

Student Farewells

Sadly, we have a few farewells – we wish all these students (and families) the very best on their new adventures. They will be greatly missed within the cohort.

Lola Brasler, Stella Cunningham, Elise Laliberte, Bianca Marlin, Phoebe Meers, Christian Norwood and Charlotte Whitford.

Staff Farewells

Ms Gabrielle Tremblay – Cowper Yellow will be saying goodbye to Ms Tremblay as she pursues a different career path. Ms Tremblay has been a wonderful Yr 7 Tutor and we are going to miss her presence in the cohort. We wish her well in her future endeavours.

Ms Karen Aroney – Dumolo Red will be saying ‘see you soon’ (not goodbye) as Ms Aroney takes her Long Service Leave during 2022. We hope that she enjoys her well deserved break and look forward to welcoming Ms Aroney back in 2023.

Expectations

As the holidays approach, it becomes harder to focus in school. With this in mind, it is important for students to stay focused during these last few weeks as their lives tend to become busier with the end of year celebrations and events. It is crucial for students to continue to review materials for classes to prepare for the demands of Yr 8. We want to make sure students finish the school year as strong as they can and these few steps below can help them stay focused till the end of the year.

Student Attendance

Just a reminder that if a student is absent from school an explanation must be provided by a parent/carer to ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au. If your child is absent due to illness, we thank you for providing details of your child’s symptoms. Any student absent with COVID-19 related symptoms must complete a PCR COVID-19 test and evidence of a negative test result must be provided to the School prior to the student returning to campus.

IMPORTANT DATES

1 December End of Yr 7 Term 4

31 January Start of Yr 8 Term 1, 2022

A final congratulations to Yr 7 for a wonderful year. We recognise all that they have achieved and encourage them to continue this into Yr 8. I would also like to thank all parents for their continued support of the School. Thank you.

I would also like to acknowledge the Year 7 Tutors – Madame Barbeau, Ms Tremblay, Mr Horan, Mrs Aroney, Ms Del Leo, Mr O’Leary, Ms Lamb and Dr Thanos. They have worked tirelessly throughout the year and have been an integral part of our students journey this year. Thank you, Tutors.

A special thank you to Mrs Willis – you have been amazing and the cohort and I are so blessed to have you in the Pastoral Team.

Secondary School Speech Day

The Secondary School Speech Day will take place on 1 December at 2.00pm at Dunnet Hall, Redlands Junior Campus. Due to the current venue capacity restrictions, only those Secondary School students receiving a Prize or Scholastic Button, as well as some student musicians and speakers, will be in attendance in Dunnet Hall. All other students are expected to attend School and engage with the live-streamed event in their Tutor classroom. We anticipate the event to run for approximately 1.5 hours.

With the scheduled changes to restrictions governing schools from 1 December, we are pleased to be able to welcome one (fully-vaccinated) parent or carer of each student receiving a prize or scholastic button to these events. For all other parents and carers, the live-stream links will be communicated shortly.

Lastly, may the holidays be relaxing and enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2022 as our students begin their Yr 8 studies.

Merry Christmas, and best wishes for the new year.

Head of Junior School

And so here we are at the end of 2021; another extraordinary year in so many senses and one that has again seen a series of wonderful highs and achievements alongside some disappointments with missed opportunities and experiences due to lockdown. As we have often said to the students and tried to model as staff, it is often how we bounce back from the challenges that define us most and I am very proud to be part of our resilient and community-focused school.

In this final Note Day of 2021, please take time to read through reminder information about the final events of the term and staffing updates.

If I do not see you in person between now and the end of the term, I wish you all a restorative and rejuvenating Christmas holiday break and hope that you can enjoy time with loved ones, particularly knowing that interstate and international travel will allow many in our Redlands community to travel overseas to reconnect family for the first time in over two years; a true Christmas gift.

Year 6 Debating Team Reach National Final

Earlier this week, we were notified that the national semi-final debate our Yr 6 team had completed in last week had been reviewed by an independent arbiter and after noting any discrepancy, issues or other points of interest from the original verdict, confirmed that the debate should have been awarded to Redlands.

As such, our team has been reinstated to compete in the Grand Final of the AIS Online Debating Competition in the Primary Division next week against St Hurmizd School, also from NSW. This is a truly remarkable achievement and the team will compete in the National Grand Final next Tuesday morning. Congratulation to the team for their efforts over the course of the year and I look forward to sharing the result at Speech Day.

Staffing News

After twenty-one years of dedicated service to Redlands, we say farewell to our departing Dean of Administration, Ms Leonie Atkins. Ms Atkins has been an inspiring teacher, colleague and leader at Redlands during her time at the School and leaves a significant legacy behind. She has held various leadership roles in her time here, most recently as the Dean of Junior Campus Administration, which she has held since 2016. Whether it’s overseeing the complex nature of timetabling for 30 primary classes each year, managing the day-to-day casual teacher covers, organising logistics for major events, her problem-solving and flexible thinking has always come up with the right solution. A valued friend and colleague to many of us, we will miss her presence and collegiality and graciously thank her for her service to our School.

We also say thank you and goodbye to Mr David O’Farrell who takes up a Year Coordinator leadership role at Central Coast Grammar School next year. Mr O’Farrell is relocating to the Central Coast after his second teaching stint at Redlands and we wish him and his young family all the very best.

After four years at Redlands, Mrs Stacey Clarkson, will return to New Zealand with her family. Mrs Clarkson has been an integral part of our staff team and we wish her and her family all the best in this next chapter of their lives.

Two Junior School teachers who have been on maternity leave in 2021 have confirmed that they will not be returning in 2022. Mrs Leila Snooks is now expecting her third child in February and Mrs Jessica Richards is relocating to the Sunshine Coast. Both teachers have made significant contributions to our School and enriched the lives of many students and leave with our best wishes.

After finishing maternity leave cover roles, we say farewell and thank you to Ms Jemima McGahey and Mrs Kate Rouse who have accepted permanent positions at new schools next year.

We say goodbye to our Gap Year student, Ms Lucy Wrigglesworth, after a wonderful experiential year of her ahead of her commencing her tertiary teacher training studies.

After fourteen years of service at Redlands, Mr Peter Latimer is taking some well-earned long service leave in Semester One next year. We are fortunate to have an experienced replacement in Mrs Clare McPhillips who has held this role previously for many years and look forward to welcoming Mr Latimer back to lead Yr 3 in Term 3, 2022.

Finally, I am thrilled to confirm the permanent appointment of Ms Katherine Moses as the Head of Junior Campus Music. Ms Moses has been fulfilling this role in an acting capacity this semester following the promotion of Mrs Amy Richardson to Director Of Music (P-12) at Redlands and was the leading candidate from a strong field. I know that she will continue to lead this important area of the School with passion and vision into next year and beyond.

I look forward to sharing our 2022 staffing information and new staff in my ‘Welcome to 2022’ letter in mid-January.

Final Week Events

Junior School Water Slide Day – Monday 29 November

Next Monday, each Year Group will enjoy time on the inflatable water slides we have arranged for them and Yr 6 will stay on for an after school social gathering in the piazza as part of their final week of primary schooling celebration, which Mrs Robinson will send separate information about.

The day will be a mufti day for students who will need to bring appropriate swimmers, a rash vest/T-shirt, board shorts and a towel. We ask that students apply sunscreen at home in the morning and it will also be provided in advance of the students’ session. I know that this will be a joyful activity for the students to enjoy at the end of a big year. A reminder will be in Note Day next week too.

We ask that each child brings a gold coin donation which will go to support our donation to Anglicare this year.

Year 6 Graduation Assembly – Tuesday 30 November

Our Yr 6 Graduation Assembly is at 12.15pm on Tuesday 30 November. This is a student only event with Yr 6 and some teachers in the hall and all other Junior School students and staff watching on livestream, which has been set up for Yr 6 family members to also enjoy as well. The link and passcode are embedded in the flyer but are also below. A final reminder will be sent the day before.

Kids Giving Back

Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create the next generation of generosity. In recent years, I have been contacted by the organisation when our students have contributed their time to this charity and due to lockdown this year, I know that many of our students were unable to attend the face-to-face programs they had booked which included Cook4Good and School Holiday Programs.

This year, Kids Giving Back ran many online programs instead where students connected with the elderly in aged facilities with conversation and a game of bingo, as well as made and donated wonderful animal toys and treats for abandoned animals.

It was lovely to hear that the Stevens family (Freya Yr 5, Leo Yr 3 and Zoe Yr 1) participated in these online programs during the September school holidays, and who, despite the isolation of lockdown, stepped forward to give back to others during such a difficult time.

We hope you can publicly acknowledge these young people for the example they send to others, not only in their service to the community, but in their spirit of volunteerism, especially in these challenging times.

Supporting Others at Christmas

We are committed to continuing to support Anglicare and the Matthew Talbot Homeless Hostel as we always do at Christmas and Ms McKenzie has outlined ways in which our community might consider doing this in the current climate.

Anglicare

Supporting Anglicare’s Toys’ n’ Tucker is online due to COVID. The way we give is different but the need is the same, if not greater this year. You have an opportunity as a family to choose what you might buy for another family this Christmas. For more information about this watch Anglicare Toys and Tucker video here. The shopping link is here: Toys ‘n’ Tucker website – have fun online shopping!

Matthew Talbot Homeless Hostel

Matthew Talbot strives to make the people feel welcome at their service. One easy way to do this is to provide for their basic needs. Help them have a warm shower and clean clothes so they know someone cares.

This is where we come in – we are collecting basic toiletries, socks and underwear at each of the Receptions on the Junior Campus if you would like to contribute. Deodorant isn’t just deodorant – it is love, soap is respect, shampoo signals hope. Toothbrush and paste equals welcome. Imagine what a difference we can make for those who need help this season.

Thank you for your consideration of supporting those less fortunate, a value we have always highlighted in our community at Redlands.

Merry Christmas

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Redlands Prep community a very Merry Christmas. My wish is that you can find some time to relax and enjoy a break over the coming weeks. It has a challenging  year, and we have made it through together and I thank you all for that. The support from our families continues to be overwhelming and your daily smiles and waves keeps us all connected.

You all should be so incredibly proud of your children this year. Such young, little people have had to demonstrate such resilience during remote learning and to say that I am proud of them is an understatement.

I would also like to give a huge shout out to all our class parents this year who have tried so many ways to keep students and families connected. Your innovative ideas and fun Zooms were always well received. I have loved zooming with you all every fortnight and I thank you all for your open communication as we navigated lockdown together.

Sometimes when I consider how hard things have been this year, I turn on the television and see images from around the world and from areas of Sydney that remind me how lucky we are in so many ways. We are always encouraging our learners to think of and to be kind to others. They have been demonstrating this kindness with the generous donations to the Matthew Talbott Homeless shelter being bought in. Thank you for supporting the people who use this service to feel valued and respected. Families can continue donating up until Tuesday 30 November.

I have included a link to some Student and Parent mental health tips for the school holidays.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Prep Picnic Day Tomorrow

Nothing is more exciting than ending the year with a Picnic Day and no amount of forecasted rain is going to stop us from enjoying this day together. Redlands House and Transition Gold

Well, an amazing year at Redlands House is coming to an end. We would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support, kind words and gifts. They are all very much appreciated by the teams, who have done a fantastic job educating our children and supporting our families. The staff at Redlands House are dedicated and caring and most importantly, they love working with children and aim to make every day at Redlands a great day. We would like to thank all the parents for their hard work and dedication to all that happens in the Preschool.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Stay safe and we look forward to working with you in 2022.

Transition to School Statements

Families of children moving into Kindergarten in 2022, will be able to access their child’s Transition to School Statement via Pulse at the end of term. This document records a child’s interests, strengths and preferred ways of learning in their year prior to school. Its purpose is to assist early childhood educators, parents/ carers and primary school teachers to better understand a child and how best to support their transition from early childhood education to school.

Biodegradation

In Term 1, the Seniors at Redlands House explored biodegradation as part of their sustainability lessons, teaching the children  that many of the items we use only once (single-use) before binning them and sending them to landfills, will remain in landfills for 500-1000 years or even longer. Each class collected some items to bury underground. Orange Class added watermelon rind, banana peel, carrot sticks, tin foil, paper tissue and cardboard. Blue Class added some plastic Glad wrap, a metal spoon, strawberry, stems, banana, and a glass bottle. Yellow Class added a yoghurt pouch lid, a plastic spoon, a flower, a green leaf from a tree and an apple core. Transition Gold added a plastic shopping bag, a wet wipe, a dead leaf from a tree, bark from a tree, a piece of felt and a branch from the playground shrub.

This week we dug up the items to see which ones had biodegraded and which ones were still there, intact.

The children started by speculating  whether we thought some of the items might still be there or not. The children found some more tricky than others, such as the paper, the cardboard, the wet wipe and the tree bark, but most of them understood the concept that natural items decompose and break down with the help of worms and microorganisms.

Last Day Arrangements

The last day of the year for Redlands House students is the Tuesday 30 November. Redlands House will close at 12.30pm. Please note there is no Late Room on this day.

Junior Sport

Housekeeping

As we come towards the end of the Term in regards to sport there are a few items that need your assistance and or attention.

Lost property: there is a quite a large pile of hats, tracksuits, jackets etc that have accumulated since the students have returned on site. Please ask your child to have a look through this pile at Junior School Reception if you are missing items.

2022 Calendar: the 2022 Sport Calendar for Term 1 is nearly complete and can be viewed by selecting this link Sport Calendar.

Rep Sport Items to be returned: if you still have school items such as Hockey Sticks, Touch Football Singlets, Basketball singlets that were loaned to you, please ask your child to return them to the Junior School Sports Office (located above Dunnet Hall).

Pick up times after Saturday sport: over the last 3 weekends, late arriving parents/carers for pick-up at the end of their child’s session have caused significant delays to both myself and the coaching staff who have had to stay back after-hours and supervise until parents/carers arrive. Unfortunately, parents have not been allowed to come on site so that contributes to the issue but looking ahead to 2022 this is something which will need addressing. From a ‘home’ perspective quite a few students did not know their parent’s mobile/landline number or were unsure who or what time they are being collected. External coaches do not have access to these details on Engage. If these details are addressed prior to sport then it will make for a more enjoyable experience for all parties.

2022 Sport Selection– The final Summer Sport lists for Term 1, 2022 can be viewed by selecting this link 2022 Summer Term 1 Sport Selection Review.

2021 Sport Photos: As we lead into the final week of the term and into the Christmas Break, we wanted to send a reminder to those families who may not have purchased photos from our various sporting events we have had this year. These could be great Christmas gift ideas and a way to remember the positives of the year that has passed. We were extremely lucky to get all our sport carnivals in and plenty of Saturday Sport action and with the thanks to Anthony Khoury Photography many of these memories were captured. Anthony was also present at our House Football Gala Day a few weeks ago and an album of photos from that day are available for purchase.

If you are interested in purchasing any photos from these events please see the flyer that was sent via engage or Pulse for all the information.

Basketball Skills

Thank you to those students who attended the Basketball skills sessions on the weekend. It was great to get basketballs back in the hands of the boys and girls and the mixed games at the end was a great way to finish before the rain hit.

Music

‘School’s out for Summer!’
‘We’re all going on a Summer Holiday’

‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year’

‘Summertime’
‘Sumer is icumen in’
Vivaldi’s ‘Summer’

Whatever your music playlist has queued, there’s no doubt that music and summer make a wonderful pair!

As we wrap up the year, we have a few events and performances still to come! From our students who will perform in the Christmas Celebration Services, Final Assembly, and of course Speech Day, there are still a few more joyous musical moments we can squeeze out of this year yet! We are so proud of the drive our students have found in their music-making this year, and they have certainly placed a stake in the ground for the one to come – when hopefully more freedoms will be afforded to Music classrooms across NSW.

Head of Junior Campus Music appointment

This past semester, Ms Katherine Moses has been at the helm of the Junior Campus Music Department, leading the team, program and students through untold challenges with her characteristic warmth and strength. She is an extraordinary Musician and Teacher, and we are thrilled that Katherine has accepted the permanent position as our Head of Junior Campus Music moving forward.

Thank You

I would like to take this chance to thank the dedicated Music Team who work with our students from Redlands House through to Yr 12. From our Specialist Tutors and Classroom Teacher to our Administrators, this team are student-focused and passionate about the Music journey of our Redlands students.

And to all our Friends, parents and students who make life in the Music Department a joy – thank YOU!
