Redlands House and Transition Gold

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Well, an amazing year at Redlands House is coming to an end. We would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support, kind words and gifts. They are all very much appreciated by the teams, who have done a fantastic job educating our children and supporting our families. The staff at Redlands House are dedicated and caring and most importantly, they love working with children and aim to make every day at Redlands a great day. We would like to thank all the parents for their hard work and dedication to all that happens in the Preschool.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Stay safe and we look forward to working with you in 2022.

Transition to School Statements

Families of children moving into Kindergarten in 2022, will be able to access their child’s Transition to School Statement via Pulse at the end of term. This document records a child’s interests, strengths and preferred ways of learning in their year prior to school. Its purpose is to assist early childhood educators, parents/ carers and primary school teachers to better understand a child and how best to support their transition from early childhood education to school.

Biodegradation

In Term 1, the Seniors at Redlands House explored biodegradation as part of their sustainability lessons, teaching the children  that many of the items we use only once (single-use) before binning them and sending them to landfills, will remain in landfills for 500-1000 years or even longer. Each class collected some items to bury underground. Orange Class added watermelon rind, banana peel, carrot sticks, tin foil, paper tissue and cardboard. Blue Class added some plastic Glad wrap, a metal spoon, strawberry, stems, banana, and a glass bottle. Yellow Class added a yoghurt pouch lid, a plastic spoon, a flower, a green leaf from a tree and an apple core. Transition Gold added a plastic shopping bag, a wet wipe, a dead leaf from a tree, bark from a tree, a piece of felt and a branch from the playground shrub.

This week we dug up the items to see which ones had biodegraded and which ones were still there, intact.

The children started by speculating  whether we thought some of the items might still be there or not. The children found some more tricky than others, such as the paper, the cardboard, the wet wipe and the tree bark, but most of them understood the concept that natural items decompose and break down with the help of worms and microorganisms.
