Foundation

A very warm welcome to all Redlands families to the final Term of 2021! I hope you all had some downtime and managed to spend much precious time with your families. Despite the restrictions, our family went on a few bike rides, trips on our ocean kayak and enjoyed some relaxing picnics.

Melbourne Cup Luncheon

Given the current uncertainties around the organisation of external events, we have decided not to go ahead with the Melbourne Cup Luncheon this year. As many members of our community would know, this event has a long tradition in the Redlands social event calendar with dancing, a fashion parade and fun themed activities.

However, we look forward to 2022 with anticipation and have thus booked Sergeants Mess, Chowder Bay, for our Redlands Melbourne Cup Luncheon on Tuesday 1 November 2022!

Postcard from Philip Hilble (Captain of Tennis, Class of 2020)

During the holidays, we received an update from Philip, who has been accepted on a full academic scholarship to represent Long Island University as part of their NCAA Division 1 Tennis team, while studying for a Bachelor of Science in Finance.

“Since I was young, pursuing the US College pathway was a big goal of mine. Tennis was a sport which I had played and competed in from the age of 3 and US College tennis offered a pathway where I could pursue my tennis pretty much full time while gaining a degree in finance, an area of study which I have had an interest in for a while. Going division 1 for tennis was a key motivator for me since I was around 15 years old and I used this as something I could work towards in training.

The COVID situation in Sydney provided challenges almost every step of the way, whether it be leaving the country or ensuring I was able to be prepared before going. It was very hard to stay positive during these times after I had received the college offer but wasn’t sure if I would be able to go. One thing which helped, was focusing on taking care of things which I could control, avoiding wasting time and energy worrying about things out of my control. With that being said, it was still a very stressful time and speaking it through with family and friends definitely helped me stay focused and hopeful.

Arriving in New York 2 weeks ago has kicked off 2 of the most busy weeks of my life, having met so many new people, moving into my college dorms, meeting my tennis team and commencing training, all in a new country! While it has been nothing short of overwhelming, the many awesome people I have met already have made the transition much easier. I have really enjoyed my classes so far, and the professors at the college have been really helpful.

One of my greatest memories from Redlands is the sense of community which I felt at the school, especially during sporting events such as the athletics and swimming carnival. I always felt that there was many people around me to help and the School played a big role in helping me achieve my goal of going to America for college. My best individual memory was competing with our school tennis team at Albury All Schools Nationals, where we represented our school and made lifelong friendships and connections.

Finally, as a quick word to current Redlands students and those in my graduate class, I just wanted to say that you shouldn’t lose sight of an important goal of yours, even if it current circumstances may make the goal seem unattainable. Injuries and other hurdles made me lose sight of my goal for a while, but I never lost hope and had a plan in place. I ensured that I didn’t exclude myself from the opportunity of going overseas and made sure to ask for lots of help every step of the way and put the work in.”
