Community Update

A very warm welcome to Term 4.  We trust your family are safe and well and hope that you had the opportunity to enjoy some family time over the holiday period, albeit through lockdown restrictions.

In times such as these we give thanks for the strength of our Redlands community and we continue to work in partnership with parents and carers to make this time of transition back to On-Campus Learning as positive and enriching for our community as possible.

We continue to be guided by NSW Health and the Association of Independent Schools of NSW in preparation for our return to On-Campus Learning.  We are ready to adjust our plans as needed to ensure the best educational opportunities for our students, while prioritising the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students. A reminder that all COVID-19 related communications to parents, including return to On-Campus Learning information, is posted on the COVID-19 Page of Redlands Pulse.

Coming together as a community remains a challenge at this time but we look ahead with hope and optimism as restrictions are eased through this term. As we assess future community events we encourage a continued connection to the significant and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support our community.  These groups keep our community connected and included within the many and varied aspects of school life.

It is always a pleasure to hear what our alumni community have been up to and I was delighted to  read Class of 2020 alumni, Philip Hilble’s journey since leaving Redlands.  Philip’s American adventure, along with an update from the Foundation team, can be enjoyed here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

From The Principal

“What we learn with Joy is never forgotten”

I shared this quote during the opening of the Harvard Project Zero Australia Network virtual conference last week, which was hosted by Redlands, with Matthew Bentley, Head of Teaching and Learning, playing a key organising role.

In 2019, the School provided me with the opportunity to attend the week-long Project Zero conference at Harvard, along with the then Deputy Principal, Sarah McGarry. It was a most memorable experience which provided the opportunity to connect with a diverse range of outstanding educators from around the globe. It also enabled a structure and process to reflect creatively on the key aspects of education in schools that would enable students to thrive in our complex global society.

For the opening address last week, it was enjoyable to go back to my notes from 2019 and to highlight the key themes explored that would enable students to thrive and school culture to be enhanced. Student agency, student wellbeing, inclusion, embracing diversity, civic responsibility and service, culture of thinking, teaching for understanding and solving complex problems were some of the key essential focus areas.

The quote above framed the challenge linked to all of these aspects and the importance of making learning relevant and a powerful experience for students. The Australian conference this year was inspiring and it was wonderful to share with staff from around Australia, and across the globe, about the strategies they were utilising to ensure learning was infused with ‘Joy’.

As we look ahead to this term and the return to On-Campus Learning, we do so with anticipation for once again being together onsite. This morning the new Premier announced changes to the road map for the return to On-Campus learning. We look forward to welcoming back all students in Years 2-11 on Monday 25 October and Heads of Section will advise further details next week. (As previously advised, students in Redlands House, Transition Gold, Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 12 will return to On-Campus Learning on Monday 18 October).

School-Wide Parent/Carer Survey

The input and feedback from our community are important to the success of our continuous school improvement process as we aspire to enhance the learning experience for everyone at Redlands. All parents and carers were sent a letter on Tuesday confirming that Redlands will be once again using the Perspectives: Your school in focus suite of surveys developed by AISNSW to support our school improvement endeavours as the School successfully conducted this survey with all stakeholders in 2019. The information gathered will assist in furthering the growth and development of our school community, and the survey results will be used to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. These surveys have been specifically designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of stakeholders’ perceptions of five important areas: School Environment, Teaching and Learning, Student Wellbeing, Leadership and Community. All parents, carers, staff and Year 5-11 students will be invited to participate.

The parent/carer survey will be available from 25 October to 7 November and is conducted online, taking approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. A reminder that, as outlined in this week’s letter, if you wish your child to opt-out, the deadline for opting-out is 12pm tomorrow Friday 8 October.

Foundation

A very warm welcome to all Redlands families to the final Term of 2021! I hope you all had some downtime and managed to spend much precious time with your families. Despite the restrictions, our family went on a few bike rides, trips on our ocean kayak and enjoyed some relaxing picnics.

Melbourne Cup Luncheon

Given the current uncertainties around the organisation of external events, we have decided not to go ahead with the Melbourne Cup Luncheon this year. As many members of our community would know, this event has a long tradition in the Redlands social event calendar with dancing, a fashion parade and fun themed activities.

However, we look forward to 2022 with anticipation and have thus booked Sergeants Mess, Chowder Bay, for our Redlands Melbourne Cup Luncheon on Tuesday 1 November 2022!

Legacy Gift of Class of 2021

We are very proud to announce that this cohort have raised just over $25,000 for the means-tested Belinda Oxley Scholarship and sustainability initiatives at Redlands. Well done for leaving your legacy on the school community in such an inspiring way! For any last minute orders, please visit HERE.

Thank you sincerely to all members of the Redlands community who have supported this initiative and Belinda Oxley Scholarship Appeal this year. Due to your generosity and all fundraising efforts, we have achieved 90% of this year’s goal to be able to award another means-tested scholarship to an exceptional and deserving student commencing Year 7 in 2023.

Redlanders Association AGM

The Redlanders Association (Old Boys and Girls Union) AGM will take place on Thursday 18 November 6 pm via Zoom https://bit.ly/3zWVk34p. Open to All Redlanders. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Association, initiatives and events planned for 2022 and how Redlanders can support the School. For further information, please email Kim Flatman, Alumni Coordinator at alumni@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Postcard from Philip Hilble (Captain of Tennis, Class of 2020)

During the holidays, we received an update from Philip, who has been accepted on a full academic scholarship to represent Long Island University as part of their NCAA Division 1 Tennis team, while studying for a Bachelor of Science in Finance.

Note: Philip – extreme left

“Since I was young, pursuing the US College pathway was a big goal of mine. Tennis was a sport which I had played and competed in from the age of 3 and US College tennis offered a pathway where I could pursue my tennis pretty much full time while gaining a degree in finance, an area of study which I have had an interest in for a while. Going division 1 for tennis was a key motivator for me since I was around 15 years old and I used this as something I could work towards in training.

The COVID situation in Sydney provided challenges almost every step of the way, whether it be leaving the country or ensuring I was able to be prepared before going. It was very hard to stay positive during these times after I had received the college offer but wasn’t sure if I would be able to go. One thing which helped, was focusing on taking care of things which I could control, avoiding wasting time and energy worrying about things out of my control. With that being said, it was still a very stressful time and speaking it through with family and friends definitely helped me stay focused and hopeful.

Arriving in New York 2 weeks ago has kicked off 2 of the most busy weeks of my life, having met so many new people, moving into my college dorms, meeting my tennis team and commencing training, all in a new country! While it has been nothing short of overwhelming, the many awesome people I have met already have made the transition much easier. I have really enjoyed my classes so far, and the professors at the college have been really helpful.

One of my greatest memories from Redlands is the sense of community which I felt at the school, especially during sporting events such as the athletics and swimming carnival. I always felt that there was many people around me to help and the School played a big role in helping me achieve my goal of going to America for college. My best individual memory was competing with our school tennis team at Albury All Schools Nationals, where we represented our school and made lifelong friendships and connections.

Finally, as a quick word to current Redlands students and those in my graduate class, I just wanted to say that you shouldn’t lose sight of an important goal of yours, even if it current circumstances may make the goal seem unattainable. Injuries and other hurdles made me lose sight of my goal for a while, but I never lost hope and had a plan in place. I ensured that I didn’t exclude myself from the opportunity of going overseas and made sure to ask for lots of help every step of the way and put the work in.”

Ready to Reconnect

It’s been an interesting start to Term 4. The students in Yr 7-10 have launched straight back into Remote Learning, Yr 11 are sitting online assessments and Yr 12 maintaining focus in the closing weeks before their final exams.

Following this morning’s announcment by the new NSW Premier, we look forward to welcoming Yrs 7-11 students back to On-Campus Learning on Monday 25 October and will provide further details regarding this next week.

It was lovely to see students online this week, and reconnect after the 2-week holiday break. We began the week with a brief online assembly, where we welcomed Yr 7, 8, 9 and 10. The main focus of this assembly was to reiterate our goals for the term; wellbeing, balance, organisation and opportunity. The upcoming online assessment blocks pose a valuable opportunity for students to test their knowledge and skills, flex their organisational muscles and find a balance in their days, and ensuring wellbeing is prioritised. In this first assembly for the term, I gently challenged our Yr 7-10 students to push themselves over the next four weeks – to exert effort in the learning space, to test the limits of their discomfort by more frequently participating in Zoom discussions, to seek guidance and apply feedback with gusto. And if not now, then when? The year is nearing to a close, and a release from the restrictions of the past few months, is on the horizon. And whilst the students are still not back at school, they are safe, they are familiar with how to learn remotely, they have goals to achieve and a breadth of opportunities to showcase their skills and talents.

Also, at our first assembly, Head of Teaching and Learning, Mr Bentley, spoke with the students about their opportunity to use their voice to provide feedback to their teachers. The Student Voice Surveys are currently underway, and we anticipate rich feedback from which we can continue to propel forward, as a staff of learners and as a learning community.

The first week of term also brought opportunities for Yr 12 students to access the campus and connect with each other. Many students from the Class of 2021 have come onto site to revise with friends in Study Bubbles in the Learning Hub. Today, I supervised with Dean of Students, Ms Jansons and Yr 12 Year Advisor, Ms Matthews, and it was a delight to hear the students’ talking and laughter float out across the floors of the Learning Hub. Many stopped to chat: long hair, desperate for a cut, shared vaccination experiences, and gratitude for being able to ‘just get out of the house’ and ‘see people’ were the easy conversations had between us.

So, we look forward to the coming weeks, and the easing of restrictions as vaccination rates increase. We are busy planning for how school might look and feel when the students return in a few weeks. And although the Premier announced today that schools will return earlier, there is still uncertainty about what will happen when society does ‘open up’. We are committed to continuing to be flexible and consistent in how we approach teaching and learning. We are confident that as a community we are familiar enough, resilient enough and adaptive enough, to cope with whatever comes our way. In the next two weeks, the teachers in the Secondary School will be stress testing some models for returning the students to campus. We will communicate these with you and as always, rely on your support to ensure a safe return to On-Campus Learning and one that enables the young people in our care to connect with each other before we break for the Christmas holidays.

Next week is an exciting one in the Term 4 calendar. It’s full of beginnings and endings. Yr 11 conclude their online exams. Yr 12 conclude their formal lessons. We officially farewell Yr 12 in a final chapel ceremony and celebratory assembly and then formally induct Yr 11 into their leadership roles for a new year. While these events are most significant for the students in these year groups, they are also important rites of passage for younger students to observe and experience. We have shaped the Week 2 Timetable to ensure that every student in the secondary school is able to participate, online, on Thursday and Friday next week. Thank you for encouraging them to be engaged and respectful at these times, as they would be, in a typical year, on campus.

The registration form for Children of Essential Workers Attending School for Week 2 needs to be completed by Friday 8 October at 3.30pm. It is essential that all students who attend site are registered, even those in Year 12. This is because we have tight structures in place to ensure the safety of our community and especially our Year 12 students, at this time. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Year 11

Term 4

Welcome back to Term 4, which will be our last Term 4 together!

As you will be aware, this week and for the first two days of next week, Yr 11 are on an examination block, remotely. It appears to be going smoothly from our end and I hope there hasn’t been too many dramas from your end. The exciting news will be the return to campus for Yr 11 and I’m sure they are looking forward to that as much as I am!

As I mentioned at the end of last term, Jess Howard has taken parental leave, and I am happy to announce that Richard Millham will be taking up the role of Yr 11 Assistant Year Advisor in her absence. Richard has been the Tutor of Roseby Red since the students were in Yr 9 and has also taught most of the Year Group in his time at Redlands. I’m sure that his Tutor Group will miss him terribly but he will remain a pivotal role for the remainder of their schooling at Redlands. His replacement for Roseby Red Tutor is Mathew Owen, and we are excited to have him on board with our Pastoral team. Mathew is a passionate and excellent Music teacher and shares many of the interests and important causes that Roseby Red care about, so we are confident that he will fit into the group very smoothly. We will be introducing Mathew to the group next week, and Richard will continue to remain actively involved with them until we return on campus, to help transition the change of Tutors smoothly.

Athletics Carnival

Due to Remote Learning, we were unable to present the Athletics Awards for the School Carnival that happened at the end of Term 2, so I would like to recognise those amazing athletes in Yr 11 who achieved great results:

U17 Girls Champion: Olivia Vigneault, Runner Ups: Olivia Stonley and Evie Farrell

U17 Boys Champion: Ben Adamson, Runner Up: Max Rawlinson

U16 Girls Runner Up: Lauren Smith

A fantastic effort too, for both Ashani Gupta and Olivia Vigneault who participated in all 5 track events!

Mullets for Mental Health

Congratulations to all Yr 11s who participated in, and donated to, ‘Mullets for Mental Health’ in September. The boys involved managed to raise an incredible $4,639! There will be some much needed haircuts coming up in the next couple of weeks when hairdressers open up, in time for the boys (and Mr Millham) to return to campus.

Have a great week!

Year 10

Welcome Back

I hope everyone had a relaxing and refreshing break and is ready for a busy Term 4. I would like to formally welcome new Tutor Ms Katie Ebzery who is joining the Yr 10 Pastoral Team in replacement of Ms Alyssha Clarke. Ms Clarke has been given the exciting opportunity to be the Assistant Year Advisor for Yr 9 for the remainder of the term, and then will take on the exciting role as the Assistant Year Advisor for Yr 7 in 2022. Ms Clarke has been such an asset to the Yr 10 Pastoral Team and I know her 10 Dumolo Red Tutor Group will miss her dearly as she takes on her exciting new role. Ms Ezbery joined Redlands late in Term 3 and is a valued member of the PDHPE department. As Ms Clarke’s Yr 9 duties start almost immediately, Ms Ebzery has joined the Tutor Group as of this week.

I would like to also formally welcome new student Jordan De Guzman to the Yr 10 cohort. Jordan is joining the Yr 10 Year Group from Manilla in the Philippines where he attended the British School. Jordan has joined the 10 DR Tutor Group who has made him feel so welcome this week.

Key Dates

Week 1 (October 5 -8) Yr 10 engaged in Remote Learning

Week 2 (October 11-15) Yr 10 engaged in Remote Learning

Week 3 (October 18-22) Yr 10 Assessment Block (No Remote Learning Lessons)

Week 4 (October 25-29) Yr 10 Engage in Careers Week

Congratulations Yr 10 – Mullets for Mental Health.

A HUGE congratulations to Yr 10 who raised close to $4,500.00 towards Mullets for Mental Health. As Year 10 raised well beyond their $2000.00 target, on the last day of Term 3, Ms El Martin went all out and made her hair crazy – venturing out into the public with her hair, and Ms Van de Peer was given the honor of cutting my hair live on the Zoom Year Assembly. Ms Van de Peer started with a number 3 razor, however, with the loud support of Yr 10, she changed the razor to a number 0 to shave either side of my head. The result was a terribly stunning mullet! A big thank you to all of Yr 10’s contributions towards this worthy cause with all proceeds going towards Mental Health research which has been particularly poignant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Assessment Blocks

Parents of students in Yr 7-10 would have received a recent communication regarding the modified Assessment Block for Term 4. We believe the modification will provide students with a meaningful assessment experience, and one that supports them to:

  • Prepare for an assessment task ahead of time, utilising organisation and revision skills
  • Undergo a range of tasks – students will be asked to complete quizzes, tests and assignments
  • Experience a managed sense of pressure, utilising emotional self-management skills
  • Receive feedback on their achievement and growth
  • Set goals for future learning

During the Assessment Block, students only log in to sit their assessments. They do not attend formal lessons during the Block, and they do not follow the Remote Learning Timetable. Instead, they follow the Online Assessment Timetable, emailed to parents earlier this week. Students have a maximum of two assessments per day; one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

When students are not sitting an assessment task, they should be:
– Having a break, relaxing and being active
– Revising for another assessment task
– Reflecting on how they managed a task and identifying positive strategies to take into the next task

Year 9

Welcome back to Term 4! It is hoped that all families had a chance to rest, spend time together and enjoy a few picnics outdoors over these last two weeks.  Students participated in a Secondary School Assembly on Tuesday with messages from Ms Gemma Van de Peer and Ms Marita Jansons to welcome students back to school and provide an overview of the term ahead. On Wednesday, Yr 9 had a Year Assembly to discuss specific details regarding Student Voice Survey and Yr 9 Examination Block. We look forward to welcoming students back to lessons face-to-face as soon as possible.

Welcome to new student, Hannah Brown, who has joined us starting this term in Yr 9 at Redlands!

Please join me in congratulating Katharine Boase as she fills in for the Dean of Activities position in Term 4.  Katharine is an incredible teacher, leader, colleague and support for our students.  We will miss her in our Yr 9 team and wish her all the best as she takes on this new role. While Katharine is away, please join me in congratulating and welcoming Ms Alyssha Clarke who will be the Acting 9 Assistant Year Advisor in Term 4.  Alyssha is a passionate and enthusiastic Drama teacher who many of our cohort have had the chance to meet through their Yr 8 and Yr 9 Drama elective.  We are very excited to have her on our team this term.

Year 9 Exam Block – Week 4

Parents will have received communication from Ms Gemma Van de Peer with specific information around the Yr 9 Examination Block. The process for examinations and what students should be doing in between logging in to sit examinations is included in this communication and was shared with students specifically via our Yr 9 Meeting this week.

The timetable for the Yr 9 Yearly Examinations is linked in Redlands Pulse for parents and in iLearn Pastoral Page for students.

Mullets for Mental Health

Thank you for all your support in raising money for Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health.  As a school, we raised $16,956! This is an incredible contribution to a strong program and extremeley necessary cause.

Sport

All students will have access to Zoom Fitness Sessions and Yoga this term.

Zoom Fitness Sessions: Tuesday (before and after school), Thursday (before and after school), Friday (before school)

Zoom Yoga: Tuesday (after school)

Year 8

A very warm welcome back to all Yr 8 families and a special welcome to Nora Moncau Munio and her family who are joining our Redlands community this term.

We hope you had an enjoyable and restful break, despite the COVID-19 restrictions which continue to impact us all. However, we look forward to welcoming Yr 8 back onto campus on Monday 25 October, Week 4.

Mullets for Mental Health

Congratulations to the Yr 8 team who fundraised $3,231. Terrific effort from all involved.

One Foot Forward this October

October is Mental Health month, and we are encouraging students to join the Yr 8 Redlands team to walk as many kilometres as they can throughout the month to continue raising funds for mental health research and resources for the Black Dog Institute. Mental illness is very common. Most of us will know someone experiencing mental illness, or even experience it ourselves, at some point in our life.

Students have been emailed all details, and we encourage students to sign up prior to the holidays.

Whilst our team has already started, we would love more to join.

Redlands School TV – Exam Jitters

“Balance is key when it comes to getting the most out of the brain. Students need to take responsibility for when to study and when to socialise.” – Dr Michael Carr-Gregg.

Setting a schedule is vitally important. Students need to schedule everything from sleeping and eating, to studying and exercising. It is one of the best ways to manage inevitable exam stress. Students need to look after themselves when they have big demands in their life.

When it comes to productive study, sometimes less is often more. It is recommended that students hit the books in 50-minute stints, broken up by 15-minute breaks. This gives the brain, and body, a rest. Adolescents will often underestimate the amount of sleep they need. Getting enough sleep is key to successful study practices.

Research shows that physical activity also has a very positive impact on mental wellbeing. Eating well is another crucial factor to maintaining concentration and staying focussed on the task ahead.

Year 7

Welcome Back

We hope you had a lovely holiday period and that students and parents were able to refresh and recharge ready for Term 4. We have a very busy term ahead with a lot of moving parts to it.

Week 1 (October 5 -8) Yr 7 engaged in Remote Learning

Week 2 (October 11-15) Yr 7 engaged in Remote Learning

Week 3 (October 18-22) Yr 7 Assessment Block (No Remote Learning Lessons)

Year 7 Assessment Block (Week 3)

Parents and Carers of Yr 7 students would have received a recent communication regarding the modified Assessment Block for Term 4.

Sport

All students will have access to Zoom Fitness Sessions and Yoga this term.

Looking Ahead to Term 4

It has been wonderful to reconnect with the students and staff this week as Term 4 got underway. It was exciting to see the positive reaction on the faces of many of the students in our Zoom assembly when I updated them on the return to On-Campus Learning dates which had been brought forward and of course since our assembly on Tuesday, the goalposts have been moved again following this morning’s announcement by the new Premier that all students will return on the revised dates below:

  • Preschool, TG, Kindergarten, Yr 1 & Yr 12: Monday 18 October (Week 3)
  • All Yrs 2 -11: Monday 25 October (Week 4)

We have been planning for the students’ return for some time and are well underway with our preparation for this staggered return and I also shared with the students that ensuring that they were feeling safe, prepared and happy to return would be an absolute priority for our staff.

Many were here last year as we transitioned back after lockdown but we also know that many were at different schools or even in different countries last year.

In the week preceding Junior School students coming back, I will send a detailed letter to Junior School families with an overview of our specific return to school plans and guidelines keeping community safety at the forefront of our thinking.

Music Examinations

Congratulations to the dozens of Junior School students have been busy recording their AMEB exams at home this week and forwarding their videos for upload. I know that there has been much practice for you all ahead of these exams and it was also lovely to see students in our full uniform again after quite some time! Well done on all of your efforts and commitment, ably guided and supported by our team of tutors and administration staff.

Be the Reason Someone Smiles Today

At the end of last term, I shared that the story of the Flynn family (Grace Yr 3, Alice Yr 5 and Thomas Yr 7) who prepared 60 individual cards of support for the residents of the Bougainvillea Retirement Village, our Senior Campus neighbours on Waters Rd, during this difficult time of isolation for many of them.

Over the break, the children received a bundle of personal thank you cards from the residents of Bougainvillea, including one from a Redlander and another resident who mentioned the School’s motto, Luceat Lux Vestra, in her reply. Some residents shared that they had displayed the cards to cheer them up each day and others wrote about their own families overseas.

Receiving this unexpected package; the Flynns said that it felt like opening a parcel at Christmas.

Resources Collection

Teachers have communicated with parents when there have been student learning resources to collect and these have been placed outside the Junior School reception for collection. Only one parent or child should come onto campus and should use the hand sanitiser and wear a mask. With no entry to the building needed, there is no necessity to check in via the QR code.

Request for On-Campus Learning for Children of Essential Workers: Week 2, Term 4

Parents of students wishing to be considered for on-campus supervision are asked to submit the online request form for the first week of Term 4 using the link below. This should be completed by 8pm on Friday 8 October to allow sufficient time for staffing to be organised based on the numbers ahead of the weekend.

Term 4 OOSH

K-6 OOSH will not be available from 5 – 15 October (Weeks 1 and 2) but will return as year groups stagger their return from 18 October onwards. Bookings can be made via OOSH bookings from Monday 11 October. Please be aware that numbers will be capped.

OOSH K and Yr 11          Students can access from 25 October
OOSH Yrs 2 – 6                Students can access from 25 October

School Sport

As was the case last year, our Sports Department are exploring various ways in which our students can be active as they return on campus. Interschool sport will not take place this term but similar to last year, we are exploring ways in which we can host our own internal House sports events, subject to the guidelines of the time. Further details will be communicated in due course to students and families.

Welcome to Term 4

We start this term with new hope and as we edge closer to our return to On-Campus Learning  dates.

Redlands House, TG. Kindergarten and Year 1 – 18 October

Year 2 – 25 October

Staff are planning for a safe and smooth return to On-Campus Learning for our youngest learners. Please know that as students return, their social and emotional wellbeing is so very important to us, and we will be using many opportunities next week to start the discussion around what it is going to be like for students as they come back on campus. Some students will walk casually back through our doors without a care in the world and others will need support in reconnecting with their peers and with the school environment. To support all our students returning, our Week 2 Grade Assemblies and wellbeing class times will focus on returning to school and the feelings that will be associated with it. Don’t forget you can access great resources on our Pulse page that provide conversation starters and helpful parenting strategies when dealing with anxiety or worry.

Please be aware that our staff are currently working on what the online support learning will look like for those students who don’t return to on campus learning. More information around the logistics involved in the return to school process will be sent to all families next week.

Term 4 OOSH

K-6 OOSH will not be available from 5 October to 15 October (weeks 1 and 2) but will return as grades stagger their return from 18 October onward. Bookings can be made via OOSH bookings email from Monday 11 October. Please be aware that numbers will be capped.

OOSH K and 1 – Students can access from October 18
OOSH Years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 – Students can access from October 25

Week 2 Request for On-Campus Learning for Children of Essential Workers

Parents who are essential workers can lodge a request for on campus learning support for the weeks of 11 October – 15 October. Booking requests close again at 8pm on Friday 8 October at 8pm to allow sufficient time for staffing to be organised based on the numbers.

2022 Term 1 After School Prep Sport Update

In exciting Sports news, Expression of Interest (EOI) for Term 1 2022 Prep After-School Sport will open on Monday 22nd November at 1:00pm. In Term 1, the following sports will be available:

  • Tennis (Monday & Friday)
  • Football (Monday)
  • Basketball (Monday & Friday)

Registration for all sports will take place in an EOI Form (one form for all sports) through a link on the Prep Sport Pulse page. All Prep families will be notified via email one week prior to registration opening and again once the EOI form is live. Please ensure that the school has your preferred contact email on your Student Details (Engage) records.

Each sport has limited spaces available for each Year Group. This is to ensure a quality experience is offered to students with a low student-coach ratio. It is anticipated that spots in all sports will fill very quickly. Spots in each sport are offered on a “first in, first served” basis. A waitlist will be created for those that miss out.

Registration is not confirmed until you receive a confirmation email from the Prep Sport Administrator. Families will be informed either way regarding the result of their EOI Form. Families must re-register each term and registrations DO NOT roll over. This registration process gives equal access to sport programs for all Prep School families each term.

For more details, please visit the Prep Sport Pulse page or contact prepsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Term 4 Library Borrowing

The Lucy Hill Library will be staffed from Monday 18 October which means our family book loaning can resume. However, before this commences, we need to make sure all outstanding library loans from Term 2 are returned please. For this to happen in a COVID-safe way, please return any library books you currently have by placing them in the Prep Returns Box on the table outside the Junior School Entrance by Friday 15 October. When all your books are returned, you may then email Mrs Roberts at vroberts@redlands.nsw.edu.au notifying her that you would like a bag of 10 new books. You may request specific titles or get a ‘lucky dip’ as we did in Term 2. Mrs Roberts also will need families to nominate if you are planning to pick books up on a Tuesday or Thursday. The books will be placed on a table outside the Prep Reception for pick up.

Music

Welcome Back to Term 4!

With the sight of Summer on the horizon, the feeling of accomplishment is in the air for many as a year of goal setting starts to feel its reward within our final Music tasks, exams and activities for the year. As our term launches, industrious music-making has been resounding in many homes across our community as students in our Extracurricular program have been filming their AMEB Examination Repertoire for video upload. We have loved reviewing all the performances as they have rolled in, and we commend all the students who have set goals, challenged themselves and grown in their musical skills this year, especially in light of the challenges.

Especial thanks to the patient camera operators (carers!), our Redlands Music Tutors who gave extra lessons and prepared accompaniments, and to Mrs Jacqueline McGlade in our Music Office who worked through the holidays to support the collation and upload of these videos for the examining bodies.

Senior Instrumental Competition – NEW DATE

Please note a tentative new date – Monday 22 November 2021.

Though we wait for clarity as to the finer points of restrictions for Instrumental Music-making once students are allowed back on site, we have taken the liberty of pencilling in a revised date for the postponed Senior Instrumental Competition. If restrictions are still prohibitive of a live performance on this new date, we will move to a video upload format for this event too – if only to bring a sense of closure for our talented finalists who have worked hard for this accolade.

If we are able to go ahead with a live performance of sorts (TBA), it will commence at 4pm and though closed to the public, it will be live-streamed. More information will come as the restrictions ease.
Please mark the date in your diary just the same.

Though Year 12 finalists will have officially graduated, in this extraordinary year, we would welcome these graduates to still participate in the competition – should it work with their final HSC & IB examination schedules.

We congratulate the following students once more on their success in being selected as finalists for 2021:

DIVISION ONE
Etta Buggy-Axton (7)
Jet Gwilliam (8)
Audrey Nitschke (7)
Liam Petersen (8)
Chanel Wang (8)
Kevin Wang (7)

DIVISION THREE

Congratulations Yr 12!

As we prepare our final celebrations for our outgoing Yr 12 cohort in the coming week, we would like to take the chance to officially honour those in our graduating class for their ongoing contributions to Music throughout their time at Redlands. Though many members of the Class 2021 have participated in our Music programs over the years, we would especially like to pay our thanks to the following Yr 12 students who have shown great resilience, positivity, dedication and leadership within our Elective Curricular & Cocurricular Music streams this year – the culmination of many years of music-making along their Redlands journey.

The Music Department honours the following graduating students:

Lessons, Classes and Rehearsals in Term 4

As Remote Learning continues throughout the next weeks, and with the imminent return to On-Campus Learning, we are ever cognisant of the advice and restrictions for Music-making as afforded us by NSW Health. As we return to On-Campus Learning, we will be sure to advise our community if and when it has been deemed safe to modify our current strategy away from online Music classes, rehearsals and tuition.

In the meantime, ensembles and lessons continue in Term 4 as they were in Term 3.

Senior Students are encouraged to check their iLearn notification settings to ensure they are up to speed with rehearsal times and Zoom sessions as they are scheduled. With the launch of the LUX PROJECT for 2021, it is our hope to have this year culminate in rewarding Music projects, despite all the challenges of this year. We look forward to having all students participating within our final music projects for 2021.

Please keep your eye on the Music Events dates on Pulse in case of adjustments in the weeks and months ahead, in light of our rapidly changing context.  As mentioned last term, the Yrs 8, 9 and 10 Showcases have officially been cancelled and assessment components for these years will be reimagined as video uploads.  We will be seeking ways to provide vital Performance experiences ‘in house’ once students are back on campus. We look forward to sharing our music in this way again as soon as it has been deemed safe to do so.
