Taking Risks

The monkey bars, climbing equipment and swing in the Redlands House playground are always popular activities. The children love to challenge their skills and take risks. Risky play is increasingly becoming recognised as an important developmental opportunity for young children. Risky play is a natural part of children’s play, a thrilling and exciting activity that involves a risk of physical injury; and play that provides opportunities for challenge, testing limits, exploring boundaries and learning about injury risk. It is crucial to a child’s development so it’s important that teachers and parents don’t prevent children from engaging in risky experiences and activities. Some of the key life-skill benefits to be gained from risky play include: building resilience and persistence, balance and coordination, the development of motor skills, awareness of the capabilities and limits of their own bodies, and the ability to assess and make judgment about risk.

Community Garden

Redlands House has a wonderful community garden at the top of the playground. The children have a lovely time caring for this space, learning a variety of skills while having lots of fun growing plants and vegetables. Gardening assists children learn how to care for their environment, as well as develop math and science concepts, in a way that builds both self-confidence and responsibility. To enable this project to be successful, we need parent helpers. If you are able to assist in any way, please let us know. One of the teachers and the children usually tend the garden between 8.30-9.00am once or twice a week. If you can assist during this time, please let us know, one parent would be great, but a team would be even better.
