From the Principal
Parents and carers would have received my letter earlier this week regarding the courageous young women who have come forward to illuminate sexual assault they experienced during their time as students. At the same time the School reached out to our alumni with a similar letter, offering our support, and a key focus for me personally was to address our Secondary School students. I have appreciated feedback from parents who mentioned that this prompted discourse and open, honest conversations in their homes.
Our recent alumni have clearly articulated why we need to address the topic of sexual consent earlier than Years 9 and 10, and as stated, we will complete a review of the staging of our sex education program; partnering with educational experts in the field, parents, students and alumni. It is important to note that we currently have a Protective Behaviours program which starts in Preschool and is graded throughout the School. This program is focussed on creating a Child Safe Culture throughout the School, incorporating regular training for staff on aspects such as the Child Safe Standards. This is an area in which no School can be complacent. It is essential that we must always aim to continually improve.

Secondary School leaders presented at our Board Meeting this week and prior to the session, Ms Van de Peer joked about needing a tissue as she would be so proud of them. As I am finding regularly, she was spot on. It was one of those times when I would have loved to have a camera to record what they said; about their goals as leaders, their desire to see all students engage through their theme of ‘Press Play’, their passionate feedback to the Board about their experience of our wide-ranging programs and their genuine respect and support for each other as a team. When asked the question, “Why Redlands?”, they articulately expressed their affection for the School, whilst honestly sharing their focus areas for future improvement. We didn’t quite need a tissue, but we were certainly proud.
Deputy Principal, Sean Corcoran, delivered a strong address to the Junior School students at Assembly this week, encouraging them to focus on achieving personal bests in all areas of school life, rather than focusing on comparison to others. This theme of aiming for personal excellence is a powerful one, as it speaks to each individual and enables them to name personal goals that are achievable. Sometimes students can assume that only ‘naturally bright’ students do well at school and this can be demotivating. We must continually remind them that it is actually through regular application and hard work that success is achieved. At the Academic Achievers Assembly recently, 2020 Alumni, Leopold Colin stated that he had never achieved a Scholastic Button prior to Year 12 and Mr Corcoran used this as an example to powerfully illustrate this point.
Redlands App
We are pleased to advise we are launching a Redlands app to enhance communications between School and home. The app provides mobile access to notifications from the School, key contacts, calendar dates, absence forms, term dates, key links and social media feeds. We will provide a User Guide, including details on how to access and use the app, to all parents on Monday. There is the opportunity to provide feedback within the app and we will use this to guide further development.
