Issue 5 2021 - 25 Feb 2021

From the Principal

Parents and carers would have received my letter earlier this week regarding the courageous young women who have come forward to illuminate sexual assault they experienced during their time as students. At the same time the School reached out to our alumni with a similar letter, offering our support, and a key focus for me personally was to address our Secondary School students. I have appreciated feedback from parents who mentioned that this prompted discourse and open, honest conversations in their homes.

Our recent alumni have clearly articulated why we need to address the topic of sexual consent earlier than Years 9 and 10, and as stated, we will complete a review of the staging of our sex education program; partnering with educational experts in the field, parents, students and alumni. It is important to note that we currently have a Protective Behaviours program which starts in Preschool and is graded throughout the School. This program is focussed on creating a Child Safe Culture throughout the School, incorporating regular training for staff on aspects such as the Child Safe Standards. This is an area in which no School can be complacent. It is essential that we must always aim to continually improve.

Please continue to send through any feedback you have to feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Secondary School leaders presented at our Board Meeting this week and prior to the session, Ms Van de Peer joked about needing a tissue as she would be so proud of them. As I am finding regularly, she was spot on. It was one of those times when I would have loved to have a camera to record what they said; about their goals as leaders, their desire to see all students engage through their theme of ‘Press Play’, their passionate feedback to the Board about their experience of our wide-ranging programs and their genuine respect and support for each other as a team. When asked the question, “Why Redlands?”, they articulately expressed their affection for the School, whilst honestly sharing their focus areas for future improvement. We didn’t quite need a tissue, but we were certainly proud.

Deputy Principal, Sean Corcoran, delivered a strong address to the Junior School students at Assembly this week, encouraging them to focus on achieving personal bests in all areas of school life, rather than focusing on comparison to others. This theme of aiming for personal excellence is a powerful one, as it speaks to each individual and enables them to name personal goals that are achievable. Sometimes students can assume that only ‘naturally bright’ students do well at school and this can be demotivating. We must continually remind them that it is actually through regular application and hard work that success is achieved. At the Academic Achievers Assembly recently, 2020 Alumni, Leopold Colin stated that he had never achieved a Scholastic Button prior to Year 12 and Mr Corcoran used this as an example to powerfully illustrate this point.

Redlands App

We are pleased to advise we are launching a Redlands app to enhance communications between School and home. The app provides mobile access to notifications from the School, key contacts, calendar dates, absence forms, term dates, key links and social media feeds. We will provide a User Guide, including details on how to access and use the app, to all parents on Monday. There is the opportunity to provide feedback within the app and we will use this to guide further development.

Choice, Voice and Agency

As I write this Note Day article, it’s Wednesday evening and I am standing in my office and ten of the Yr 12 School Leaders are next door in the Meeting Room practising their presentations for the Redlands Board, who they are scheduled to meet in 15 minutes. They are loud. And enthusiastic. They are tired, but excited. I can hear ‘environment’ and ‘the arts’ and ‘press play’ on regular repeat. They are using mindmaps, writing on the whiteboard, making notes on their phone and asking for last minute printing of their ideas. Some are drinking cups of tea, kindly made by Ms Jansons, and despite the long school day, they are brimming with energy and agency. Over the past week, this group have reflected on their mission as the 2021 core leaders. They’ve considered their own personal leadership styles and the ‘what’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ of their vision to support every Redlands student to ‘press play’ in 2021.

It’s been a privilege to see them work together. Piper and Theo are gentle leaders. Both can articulately convey their ideas and bring the group along with them. They expertly set the scene and then take a back seat, observing, listening and sensing their way forward with the group, offering clarification and encouragement when needed. In confirmation of an idea or suggestion, they look at each regularly and it’s easy to see they are a united force, who intuit the needs of the group. Olivia and Dillon, our Sports Captains, are also a cohesive pair. They laugh a lot and relish being organised. Dillon’s mindmap, laying out their leadership plans, is a testament to this. Keen to distribute their leadership, and work closely with the individual Sports Leaders, their authenticity and energy is infectious, as they relate well to others. Maddison and Felix are a formidable team! Trust me when I say you want these two on your side. Passion, joy and vitality are the hallmarks of their leadership practice. They optimistically embrace all things Arts at Redlands and fearlessly embrace the breadth and depth of their creative portfolio. Both Laura and Harry, our Service Captains, are compassionate, strong and well-spoken young people. They inspire selflessness and show how service is intrinsic to the character of Redlands. Keen to avoid tokenistic approaches to service, they aim to lead by example and connect service to all aspects of a Redlands education. As Captains for the Environment, Julia and Max’s intention to be communicative leaders, is already reflected in their dual strength as powerful speakers. Max’s intelligent humour and Julia’s erudite articulation of the complex issues facing the environment and humanity is an enabling feature of their leadership style. When they say they are going to save the globe, you believe them.

What I see in these leaders is confidence and self-belief. They believe they can be active agents of influence. And they will be. Given the world right now, and especially our place in it, here in Sydney, active agents of influence are what we need. To speak up, to advocate on behalf of others, to navigate the flux and flow, and to effect positive change.

Student-Led Assemblies

Our Student-Led Assembly this week provided some key messages and quite a few laughs. It was wonderful to see James Barrelle and Noe Labouze reinvent Tips from the Tippiest of Tops and the Stubbiest of Stubs. For new students who don’t quite understand this Assembly feature, I suggest seeking the answers from Yr 12 who fondly recall this Assembly element from years past. Olivia Donoghue, Lauren Wong and Gabrielle Drage showed real skill in being able to pull the various elements of the Assembly together in a very short space of time, to enable the composition of an engaging short film for Redlands students. Excellent work all round!

In the coming week, we have more Yr 12 Leaders and Prefects stepping up to take carriage of assemblies. Currently, the students are deep in preparation for a wonderful International Women’s Day assembly which involves our Secondary School community, with a focus on experience and voice. Anna-Luisa Feller and Julia Parker have taken the lead on this, and have a strong team of supporters. Stay tuned!

Careers Interviews

Yr 10 students and their parents have been actively engaged in Career interviews this week, as part of the Redlands program to support early and meaningful conversations around future decision making in relation to careers and post-school pathways. Considering early on one’s subject interests, inclination towards specialist or generalist credentials, as reflected in HSC and IB courses, and possible university pathways, supports a student’s capacity to reflect on their strengths and make discerning choices. Thank you Ms Simone Salier for facilitating this process for our Yr 10 students.

This Weekend

There is so much going on this weekend – and much of it is in Canberra. We wish the rowers speed on the water in the Head of the Lake and the sailors wind in their Racing Championships – not sure how these two combinations work together, but fingers crossed both sports groups excel in their respective fields.

The Arts

There has been a lot of rehearsing and recording behind the scenes in preparation for the filming of the school Musical, Grease. After the switch to an online format, it’s been wonderful to see students in the studio recording vocals to be added to the band’s tracks. The first filming date is fast approaching!

We’re also delighted that we are able to have a live audience to see students perform at the upcoming Jazz night. Further details will be communicated by the Music Department. Next week also sees Battle of the Bands auditions, so it’s a very busy time for the Arts!  We are fortunate to have Maddison and Felix leading these endeavours.

This is Redlands

It was a genuine pleasure to attend the Preparatory, Junior and Secondary School Parent Contact Group Meetings this week to introduce the Community Engagement team and our function within the School. I was delighted to discuss the needs of our community through the dedicated and passionate parents who work on behalf of us all to ensure we remain connected, included and supported.

Next week sees the launch of the Redlands app. The app provides a quick and easy connection with the school for all of the important information our community seeks – contact information, term dates, events, sports fixtures, school and absentee notices, and other key links – all from the palm of your hand. It also allows parents to subscribe to specific groups of interest without having to see information that is not of interest to you. The app will be enhanced as the year unfolds and we look forward to receiving your feedback through the continuing development process. Details on downloading and installing the app will be advised shortly.

The Second Hand Uniform Sale gets underway next week and our thanks to the army of volunteers, led by the Redlands Parent and Friends Association (RPFA) and Uniform Shop, for their assistance in delivering this important event. Proceeds from the sale will be dedicated towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund

We continue to work on a number of initiatives to support a personal reconnection of our community following a disruptive 2020, and we look forward to sharing these with you as the term unfolds.

In the interim, please continue to engage with the significant and diverse experience of our class and Year Group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support our many and varied cocurricular activities.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback or questions.

Foundation

We are very proud of our diverse international community. This not only enriches the experience our students have whilst at Redlands but also provides them with a network of friends and like-minded Alumni, once they leave the School gates.

Our families often mention how the multicultural aspect of Redlands plays a very important role as to why they choose our School for their children’s education.

Many of our graduates study and work overseas to extend their educational and life experience. Pre-COVID we had a large portion of our graduates applying to study in the UK, USA and Europe.

Recent Redlands graduates are flourishing overseas, including Zoe Thompson, Class of 2016, School Captain, who won gold and silver medals at the International Science Olympiads whilst at school. Zoe completed an Honours Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics and Physiology, University of Toronto. In 2020 Zoe commenced a Doctor of Medicine program at Toronto.

Sonia Kalcina, Class of 2015 Prefect, Environmental Prefect, Captain of Tennis, graduated from the University of Oxford with a Masters of Mathematics, First Class Honours in 2019. In 2020 Sonia joined Capital One UK in London as a Graduate Strategy Analyst.

Nick Van Weelde, Class of 2014, graduated from University of London with First Class Honors Masters of Chemical Engineering and is currently working as data analyst for Deloitte Digital in London.

We are fostering relationships and connections as our community flourishes in the global space.

International and Interstate Alumni Chapter Meetings

Our recent UK and Europe Alumni Chapter meeting via Zoom was very successful in connecting Redlanders across Australia and the world. It provided a great opportunity to meet fellow Redlanders overseas whilst hearing Redlands updates. Our USA / Canada Chapter meeting is on Friday 26 February.

On Friday 5 March, we are hosting our inaugural Northern NSW/SE Qld Chapter meeting in Broadbeach, Gold Coast. The RSVP lists includes Redlanders ranging in age from their ’70s to their ’20s! The aim of this Chapter meeting is to kick-start stronger engagement with regionally / interstate-based Australian Alumni.

Clean Up Australia Day

Redlands will be participating in Clean Up Australia Day on 7 March. We have registered a site at Balmoral Beach from 12.00-2.00pm. We will be meeting at the Rotunda at 11.50am and will provide the necessary equipment. We hope to see you there!

The Heart Foundation

In the lead up to Valentine’s Day, Isabella Ilic, Jacob Gold, and I organised a charity event for the Heart Foundation. We sold roses and daisies to students and teachers to be delivered anonymously to the people they would like to appreciate this year. Additionally, as a new initiative this year, we sold heart-shaped chocolates to contribute more to the Heart Foundation. Thanks to the support of the Redlands community, we managed to donate an amazing $694 towards the fight against heart disease.

We would also like to thank the amazing Yr 11 students Edie, Izzy, Brianna, Jacqui, Sophie and Alex, for giving up their spare time and helping us organise the flowers for this special event.

Student Achievements

We are incredibly proud of Emma Mahon. Emma competed in the Illawong Track Classic in the Open A Women’s 1500m race last Saturday night. She won the race in a time of 4:39 minutes. Emma took five seconds off her personal best and the time she achieved is a qualifying time for the Nationals.

Sebastian Dobson attended the ISA representative Tennis trials and successfully made the ISA Representative Boys Tennis team. He then played at the CIS Trials and will represent the ISA in two matches, one against a GPS Representative team and one against a CAS Representative team later this term. This achievement is a testament to Sebastian’s longstanding commitment to Tennis and we warmly congratulate him.

CIS Cup

Xavier Burkett, Lachlan Green, Max Currie, Ross Psaroulis, Benjamin Vaughan and Tommee Huizenga together with some boys in Yrs 10 and 11 represented Redlands in the CIS Football Cup yesterday. Whilst it was a tough match, the boys are to be commended for their tenacious efforts.

Student Uniform Management

Wearing uniforms with pride is an imporatant objective for our school community. It creates a sense of belonging amongst students and helps in the development of our values, especially the value of Respect.

In the interest of streamlining a whole school approach to uniform expectations, from Monday 1 March, the Redlands Secondary School will engage in a two step uniform management system. Should uniform be incorrect, a student will receive a recorded uniform demerit. Two demerits in one term will result in a one hour Friday afternoon detention. The intention of this system is to establish clarity around uniform expectations and fairness in uniform management.

Whilst to some, uniform may feel like a tiny drop in the vast ocean of school life, one small drop can have lasting impacts. By focusing on the little things, we can create space for the bigger things to take care of themselves – building positive relationships, reducing classroom distractions, sharpening focus on learning and allowing students to perform better academically and personally. We appreciate your support in helping each child meet the School’s expectations.

Academic Assessment Services

On Tuesday Yr 11 students sat a half-day of testing provided by Academic Assessment Services. As independent consultants, they specialise in the assessment and analysis of educational performance and progress. Their team of professionals includes measurement and curriculum experts, education experts and teachers who will provide guidance in the development of strategic action plans for each student. Parents will also be posted a copy of the results. If your child misses the assessment, catch ups will be offered on 1 March at 8.30am.

Salvation Army Clothing Drive a Success

We are not able to say thank you enough to all those students, families and staff who contributed to making this event a success. Yr 9 has collected more clothes than they believed was possible. While we did have a small group of students leading this event, Daisy Thomas, Jocelyn Wang and Yumi Konetzny, this event would never have been such a success without all the efforts across the cohort from the many students who rotated the front and back gates each morning for the last three weeks, to those students making announcements and video messages to share with the student body, to the many volunteers who are still meeting to sort the clothing to deliver to the Salvation Army next week.

The students felt strongly that creating the opportunity to devote time and energy to a service initiative would stay with students longer than some other opportunities and they have provided just that. Well done Yr 9!

This Week in Pastoral Care

Students have been challenged to look outward this term to reflect on how they speak with others, how others speak to them and what we celebrate, and what we need to improve on as a cohort. Students worked as a Tutor Group to create a statement that represents their class. One class shared theirs, “Consider with consideration, we are all humans with limits and expectations.”  This conversation will remain ongoing and will build in various topics around inclusivity, respect and acknowledgment of others.

Congratulations

Last weekend, Redlands Rugby coach, Jordy Parsonage, organised a team outside of school including a few Yr 9 boys to take part in the NSW Touch Junior State Cup.  While it seemed to have rained all weekend impacting the outcome of the event, the boys gave their all, played hard and should be very proud of their efforts. Congratulations to Tristan Wong, Alfie Leach, Thomas Reeves, Will De Saxe and Daniel Lev for being invited to attend this event.

Jasmine Black is an incredible Football player and goalie who has given much of her time and effort to crafting her skill. She has been invited to join the Junior Matilda’s Extended Players List. She has worked tirelessly to manage her time between school, cocurricular and her training outside of school. This is a huge accomplishment for Jasmine and we wish her all the best.

Students are aware that it is their responsibility to ensure their uniform meets expectations and our staff will continue to proactively monitor and uphold our high expectations of personal presentation.

Student Uniform Management

Wearing uniforms with pride is an imporatant objective for our school community. It creates a sense of belonging amongst students and helps in the development of our values, especially the value of Respect.

In the interest of streamlining a whole school approach to uniform expectations, the Redlands Secondary School will engage with a two step uniform management system.

The Power of Yet

“I’m not that sporty and I’ll be in the lowest team, Mr Guha.”

These were the words of a Yr 5 student to me during Basketball trials at the start of this term which I reminded him of last Saturday morning after he had scored the winning basket in a come-from-behind, a thrilling two point victory for our Yr 5/6 E team against Knox. The unadulterated joy on both his face and those of his team mates at the final siren was priceless and reminded me why we ask all of our students to be part of our Representative sports program from Yr 5, noting that many start this journey from Yr 3.

As his mother had shared with me, the School’s expectation of him joining a team was met with some initial reluctance on his part but stepping out of his comfort zone had been very good for him as were the many social benefits of being part of a team of girls and boys from Yrs 5 and 6 in an interschool competition that supports fair play, sportsmanship and enjoyment.

As a teacher, whenever I hear students say, “I can’t” or “I haven’t” or other language of a more fixed mindset nature, I will generally add the word yet to their sentence….”I can’t yet” or I haven’t yet”. Nurturing a growth mindset in our students’ way of thinking and being is an attribute that continually occurs here at Redlands as we guide our students to realise that their intelligence and abilities can be improved with effort, persistence, practise and the right strategies.

Having also been part of a winning debate for the first time as part of a school team on the Friday night, this student enjoyed a great start to his weekend and now can’t wait for his game this weekend.

Outdoor Education Camps

Information has been sent home to our Yr 5 families ahead of Yr 5 Camp in Week 9 (23-26 March).

As you may recall from my letter before the commencement of term, all of our Junior School Year Groups enjoy the opportunity to be part of a Year Group camp which are often highlights for students and staff alike. These fun and exciting outdoor educational learning experiences aim to enhance students’ perceptions of their abilities, improve self-confidence, develop essential life and social skills, and foster a deep respect for the natural environment.

As teachers, these trips also give us a greater insight into the unique personality of each student as we spend quality time with them in an environment other than the classroom. This knowledge can then often be transferred back into the classroom for mutual benefit.

Redlands partners with the Outdoor Education Group (OEG) on all of our camps from Yrs 2-12 and additional information about each camp can be found here with the password Shine.

Junior School Debating

Congratulations to both Primary A and Primary B Representative Debating teams who won their debate last Friday against Trinity Grammar School. The topic was ‘Whether public transport should be free’ and, as the affirmative, Redlands proposed a range of persuasive reasons why this should be the case. In particular, we congratulate our Yr 5 students who comprise the Primary B team in their very first representative debate.

Junior School Class Parents Meeting

Along with the School’s new Head of Community Engagement Mr Grant Birse, and our Director of Development Mrs Dana Casimaty, I was delighted to attend the first gathering of our volunteer Junior School Class parents. With restrictions of parents on-site during school hours, the group met at a local venue and it was the first time in over a year that the meeting had been able to take place in person which no doubt had an influence on the near full attendance. I look forward to working with this important community group, ably led by Rebecca James and Becky Gait, and I know that there is excitement at the prospect of social gatherings this year with the changing positive position of NSW’s Health guidelines.

Clean Up Australia Day

As in previous years, Redlands has been registered for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 7 March between 12.00-2.00pm. The School has registered a site at Balmoral Beach with families asked to meet at the rotunda at 11.50pm.

To support this day, please click here and equipment such as bags and gloves have been sent to the School but attending families may wish to bring their own.

Bus Safety Week

In our assembly this week, I spoke briefly to the students about this week’s NSW Bus Safety Week, highlighting the importance of bus-related safety issues for them and indeed all road users. The week helps educate students and our wider school community about bus-related road rules so that they stay safe as passengers when catching or alighting from a bus, when riding their bikes to and from school or as pedestrians when walking to and from school crossing our busy roads occupied by many buses and when driving around school zones.

I also reminded students of the need to stand up for adult passengers when buses are full and if they are seated.

Yr 4 Excursion by Luca Cowlishaw and Jennifer Todd

On Monday, Yr 4 went on an excursion to the National Maritime Museum and Hyde Park Barracks, as part of our History unit this term. First off, we explored the Maritime Museum, where we boarded a replica of the HMS Endeavour, the ship that Captain Cook used to chart the eastern coast of Australia. We discovered how the Aboriginal Australians marked the seasons according to things like the stars or the migration of different animals and how they mapped their world. We learnt about the traditional bark boats, which were used for fishing and travelling to trade with neighbouring groups. I really enjoyed visiting the replica of the Endeavour and imagining what the life of the explorers who travelled on the original ship would have been like, as they sailed to the other side of the world.

At the Hyde Park Barracks, the guides were helpful and showed us paintings and the sorts of tools that the convicts used as we heard about the jobs they did. We also looked at the hammocks that the convicts slept in and got to try these ourselves and I found them to be very comfortable although the guide did explain that there would be many more people sharing and sleeping in this space at the time. We also enjoyed building a room outside using foam bricks and had to build an isolation room which we heard was a secondary punishment.

We were very happy to be able to have parent helpers join the excursion for the first time in over a year and we are grateful to the teachers for planning the day.

PREP SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

Welcome to Prep Music for 2021

If you’re new to Redlands, we thought this week’s Note Day might be a great chance to explain the various Music opportunities that we offer all our learners in the Prep School. Our Music offerings from P-12 at Redlands are divided into three categories: Curricular, Cocurricular and Extra Curricular.

Curricular Music

Our curriculum Music classes are at the very core of our weekly music offerings. Comprising weekly sessions and specialist extension classes in Choral or Instrumental specialisations, these classes are aligned with the NESA Creative Arts Syllabus (2006) and taught with an integrated Orff and Kodaly approach.

Kindergarten and Yr 1 Music classes are further supported by our whole-cohort Choral and Instrumental sessions each week. Though these programs are COVID-adjusted for now, they remain such a fun collective music-making time as we learn action songs and Auslan, enjoy dancing and rhythm games, and embed foundational musical ideas through play and movement. Easing NSW Health restrictions will hopefully and happily see our return to singing as the bedrock of all our Music offerings in due course.

The Year 2 classroom program is augmented by the Yr 2 Strings program which has had its joyous launch with this year’s cohort. All our Yr 2 students have now been allocated a violin or cello as their instrumental focus for the year and are enjoying exploring this instrument in their Thursday specialist sessions.

Extra Curricular Music

Our extra curricular offerings for our Preparatory students include Private Instrumental lessons in a myriad of instrument disciplines (see the sign-up sheet on Pulse for a full list of all the instruments we offer) for which students are collected during class time by one of our wonderful specialist tutors. Students are timetabled on a rotational basis so as to avoid missing too much of the same learning content or subjects within their regular class programming.

Cocurricular Music

Our Cocurricular Music offerings for the Prep School are the Prep Choir (Fridays 7.45-8.15am) and Prep Strings (Mondays 7.45-8.15am). As previously mentioned, our singing activities are all thoughtfully and safely framed by NSW Health guidelines.

Our Prep Music team for 2021 include:

Coordinator of Music (P-12) – Mr Darren Kuilenburg
Head of Junior Campus Music – Mrs Amy Richardson
Junior Campus Music Administrator – Ms Jaqueline McGlade

Redlands House Music Specialists – Mrs Amy Richardson and Mrs Susan-Gai Anderson
Transition Gold Music Specialist – Mrs Amy RIchardson
Kindergarten Music Specialists – Ms Katherine Moses and Mrs Susan-Gai Anderson
Yr 1 Music Specialists – Ms Stephanie McInnes and Mrs Susan-Gai Anderson
Yr 2 Music Specialist and Head of Strings – Ms Katherine Moses

If you have questions about any aspect of our Redlands Music offerings, we welcome you to contact the Junior Campus Music Office on 02 9908 6495 or by emailing juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Like to Do More?

We have a wonderful and much-appreciated Friends of Music committee who work directly with our Music team to support the many events and opportunities that we are able to afford our Redlands students.

The Prep and Junior School Friends of Music team are hosting an informal Q&A session for Prep parents on Friday 12 March at 8.30am in the Prep Music Room should you like to come along. We’d love to have you there. Contact Jennifer Mast (Prep Parent Coordinator) for more information.

Prep School Technology Orientation Session

Thanks to our e-Learning facilitator, Mrs Argiro Anagnostu, and our Yr 6 Technology Leaders, the inaugural Prep Technology Orientation session was a huge success this week. Parents were introduced to the what, why and how we use our iPads in the Prep School. After introducing where ICT skills sit in the NSW and Australian curriculums, our Tech Leaders guided our parents through the skill processes involved in using Book Creator and uploading their product into a SeeSaw page. We look forward to our next Tech Orientation session in Term 2.

Learn to be Safe with Emmy and Friends

Act for Kids with be running workshops with our Yr 1 students in Term 2, Weeks 1-5 for an hour a week session. Act for Kids is a national not-for-profit organisation committed to ensuring Australia’s children have the safe and happy childhoods they deserve. The aim of this program is to help your child:

  • identify when they are feeling unsafe,
  • understand their rights around their body,
  • identify the difference between private and public body parts,
  • recognise the difference between safe and unsafe secret and
  • build a network of safe people they can talk to if they ever feel unsafe.

Shortly, Yr 1 parents will receive information and a consent form for your child to attend.

On Monday 1 March, Yr 2 students will be participating in their final workshop that they missed in 2020 due to COVID. Consent forms for our new Yr 2 students will be sent shortly.

Taking Risks

The monkey bars, climbing equipment and swing in the Redlands House playground are always popular activities. The children love to challenge their skills and take risks. Risky play is increasingly becoming recognised as an important developmental opportunity for young children. Risky play is a natural part of children’s play, a thrilling and exciting activity that involves a risk of physical injury; and play that provides opportunities for challenge, testing limits, exploring boundaries and learning about injury risk. It is crucial to a child’s development so it’s important that teachers and parents don’t prevent children from engaging in risky experiences and activities. Some of the key life-skill benefits to be gained from risky play include: building resilience and persistence, balance and coordination, the development of motor skills, awareness of the capabilities and limits of their own bodies, and the ability to assess and make judgment about risk.

Community Garden

Redlands House has a wonderful community garden at the top of the playground. The children have a lovely time caring for this space, learning a variety of skills while having lots of fun growing plants and vegetables. Gardening assists children learn how to care for their environment, as well as develop math and science concepts, in a way that builds both self-confidence and responsibility. To enable this project to be successful, we need parent helpers. If you are able to assist in any way, please let us know. One of the teachers and the children usually tend the garden between 8.30-9.00am once or twice a week. If you can assist during this time, please let us know, one parent would be great, but a team would be even better.

Secondary Sport

Secondary Sport Redland Pulse

Basketball

The Round 3 Basketball results can be found on Redlands Pulse. It was another solid round for our Redlands teams who are all being competitive in their respective divisions. It has been great to see improvement throughout the season across both the boys and girls Basketball programs. Before Round 4 this Saturday please check the full list of Covid protocols here. In exciting news, NBISC will now be allowing one spectator per player, all spectators will need to sign in using the Service NSW QR code upon entry to the facility.

We will have one more round remaining on Saturday 6 March and then finals will be held on Saturday 13 March. Further details regarding the finals fixture will be provided shortly. There are a couple of divisions who will have a regular season game on 13 March (first past the post). These details can be found in the draft draw on Redlands Pulse.

There will be no End of Season event this year for Basketball given the complex and unpredictable nature of the current situation. The Friends of Basketball have suggested that each team gathers together following their last game of the season for a picnic or team lunch to celebrate the year. If you do wish to do something with your team individually, please ensure any plans made are in accordance with the most up-to-date NSW Health advice.

Congratulations to Meera Coburn who has been named into the U18 NSW Metro State Basketball team. We wish her all the best at the U18 Australian National Championships later this year.

Football

Our Girls Football program recently entered a team into the NSWCIS knock-out tournament. The first game of the tournament was against Ravenswood and it started with both teams trying to find their form as it was the first game for many students this year. Before the hal,f both teams had managed to create opportunities to score, however Ravenswood was able to convert on a fantastic goal giving them an early 1-0 lead. Redlands seemed to be the stronger team in the second half and a penalty saw the game tied at 1-1 at the final siren and the two teams were headed to a penalty shootout. Despite an early lead to Redlands in the shootout, some well-placed shots from Ravenswood saw them leaving with the victory. It was a great game for the girls to get back into the swing of things before the ISA Winter season commences.

On Wednesday afternoon our Boys 1st XI squad took on the might of Knox Grammar School in the first round of the CIS Cup (a State knockout based Football competition). This is for many of the squad the first hit out of the season (and the first time they have played a game in a number of months). Knox looked to dominate possession early and unfortunately, Redlands were unable to hold off their advances for long, and some defensive errors saw Knox take a healthy 3-0 lead into half time. The Boys looked much more relaxed in the second half with a number of attacking chances just falling through at the last chance. Unfortunately, some slick play by Knox saw one cracking goal from just inside their half and a number from the corner kick meaning they advanced to the next stage with a 5-0 victory. The Redlands boys should be very proud of their first hit-out, a lot of players stood up throughout this game and there are a lot of things to look forward to in the season ahead.

Swimming

Redlands will be competing in the 2021 Balmoral Swim for Cancer Schools Relay Challenge taking place on Sunday 21st March 2021 at Balmoral Beach.

The Schools Relay Challenge is a community-based initiative where schools help raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute, increase awareness of this important cause and importantly have fun participating in an open water swim relay.

How it works:

  • Students form teams of 4 – Senior (Yr 11-12) | Intermediate (Yr 9-10) | Junior (Yr 8-6)
  • Each swimmer swims a leg of the relay 200m.
  • Participants can swim in their school year category, or an older category
  • Entry cost are $15 for each swimmer

Tennis

Saturday 13 March was Round 3 of competition. We had a number of close matches with numerous exciting tiebreakers being played throughout the morning. Team 1 are settling into their competition with two comfortable wins so far. It has been pleasing to see students’ excellent sportsmanship on display each week. Just a reminder:

  • Students need to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before their start time
  • Students should arrive in their full school Tennis uniform (Redlands PE/sport short/Tennis skort, white Tennis polo, Redlands fleece/tracksuit).
  • Students can register for the Friday morning optional training at Cammeray Tennis Courts, 6.45-7.45am.
  • If students are sick or injured and cannot attend training please email Eliza Peirce. If students are sick and rostered to play on Saturday, please email Eliza Peirce before 12.00pm on the Friday to ensure a replacement can be found and all sets can be completed.

The COVID Safety Protocols for Tennis have not changed for Round 4. The one spectator rule at all NSTA Tennis venues remains in place. Both spectators and players should check in with the venue’s Service NSW QR code on arrival. The Redlands COVID Sports Protocols can be found on Redlands Pulse. All wet weather updates can be found on Twitter.

Touch Football

It was a great day out at Macquarie Uni on Saturday morning as the Jnr A and Jnr C teams took on St Spyridon 1 and 2 respectively. This has always been a closely fought battle between both schools, with the Term 1 competition see St Spyridon 1 just edge Redlands 5 out of the 1 v 2 playoff. The Cs started the morning off with some slick plays really focusing on drawing and passing as well as the three man drives. The girls looked good early, and a nice almost length of the field try saw Redlands take the lead 1-0. St Spyridon then took advantage of some tiring players in the second half and managed to take the game 1-3. The Jnr As have been a very impressive team all season, from Term 4 to Term 1 there have been a number of players that have improved immensely, and this showed in the game. Some slick passages of play saw the girls take a 2-0 lead into half time, and the girls dominated early in the second. The girls have focused on spacing and ensure we hold out lines (especially the wingers) and the middle and link combinations were able to capitalise on this exposing some poor defensive reads by St Spyridon and the girls jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Some lapse in concentration saw Spyridon come back with three quick tries but the girls held on the take the match 5-4.

Basketball

Our Yrs 3 and 4 teams had their first game of the season on the weekend against Newington having being washed out last week. A few highlights from these games.

D team – Rachael Lloyd was named most defensive player and always creating chances offensively.

C team – Alex Dunnet and Mac Costa were brute forces offensively keeping the buffer throughout the game.

B team – Philippine Courtaigne had a stellar performance grabbing numerous rebounds and top scoring for the team with over 20 points.

A team – Oliver Elworthy was resilient and a consistent offensive force throughout the game, almost clawing back the win against Newington.

Football

As advertised on Redlands Pulse and in Note Day, the afterschool Football sessions for Junior School students that previously took place on Monday afternoon will now move to Wednesday and Friday mornings. This will allow the grades to train together over the two days with an additional session on offer to cater for families who struggled with a PM pick up as well as only having one session. There is no charge for this program.

Tennis

Having been washed out for the first round, our coaching staff remarked that it was great to finally get the term underway last week with some great Tennis played by both schools. Redlands came up against Riverview and both teams were quite well matched. Angus was proud of the skills shown by all of our Redlands students.

Special mention to Nick and Thomas who won both their doubles match and their singles as well bringing the team a few wins for their first round. Also thank you to Lyndon for saying a few words and the beginning and end as well. It is also vital that our Tennis players arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled match time so that a proper warm up and court instructions can occur.

Musical

This year the Musical online performances will be held in Term 2. Tickets for Grease will be available for purchase shortly. Our talented students have been rehearsing in new ways, learning new skills and adapting brilliantly to create wonderful musical theatre in the recording and film studios.

Our Friends of Drama parents have offered wonderful support in creating beautifully authentic 1950s looks for the cast in their costumes for Grease. A sneak peek will be available soon. Students can check rehearsal and filming schedules on iLearn, on the Theatre and Drama notice board, and for parents on Redlands Pulse

This year Gala Arts will be held early in Term 3. Start thinking about your audition pieces. Information about the competition will be released soon.

Community Announcement

Jazz In The Garden (Live Streamed) on Saturday 13 March at 6.00pm

Redlands Music is thrilled to announce the launch of the 2021 Music Performance season, which will see the department opening the doors to the Edwards Auditorium, in welcoming parents and friends to participate as audience members in our first live concert on campus in over a year.

Please join us for a wonderful evening of live music presented by students enrolled in our Jazz program and featuring pre-recorded student compositions, as we release the 2019 and 2020 Redlands EP. Limited tickets will be made available to family members of students performing across this evening, with tickets capped at two per family. We will also continue to welcome virtual audiences to participate in this event as we continue to live stream the concert for those who are unable to join us on-site.

As per previous communications, rehearsals for this event will take place between 2.00-6.00pm throughout the afternoon and prior to the event. Ticket booking and live streaming details will be communicated with the Music community in a letter to be issued tomorrow.

Strings at Redlands

The Strings program at Redlands is designed as an enrichment experience for students. It aims to help young people develop collaborative and leadership skills, build self-confidence, curiosity and a love of learning while developing a deep connection to their Music community. Under the leadership of Head of Strings, Ms Katherine Moses, this program across K-12, is a vibrant and dynamic learning experience for all our Redlands musicians. With the majority of students commencing their adventure as part of the Yr 2 Strings program, as an extension to their curriculum learning, all students are allocated a violin or cello as their instrumental focus for the year, in developing instrumental skills and building aural discernment.

Participation in a Music group or ensemble is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a musician. Apart from being a chance to interact with peers and make new friends in the process, creating music affords a chance for all individuals to use their individual talents to produce music that is challenging, invigorating and entertaining. Most importantly, music making with friends is incredibly fun.

Junior and Senior Piano Competitions (Yrs 3-12)

Audition Series 2 (Weeks 6 & 7)

The audition process will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. It is expected that students present works demonstrating a high standard of musical competency. Please note only one piece is required for the audition with the second contrasting piece listed on the application form. These competitions will be held in the Edwards Auditorium on Friday 30 April. Audition forms can be collected from Music Receptions or downloaded from Redlands Pulse.

Extra Subjects Programs

Enrolments for Term 1 tuition are now closed. Term 2 enrolments close on Friday 1 April.
