Year 8

Yr 8 Luna Park Excursion – Cancelled

This is a friendly reminder that due to COVID restrictions, the Yr 8 Luna Park Day organised through the Maths Department has been cancelled this year.

Camp

Last week was a very memorable camp for students and staff. While the camp had been delayed due to COVID and followed a difficult and, for many students, stressful, time of the year, the students quickly left school behind and dove into the outdoor classroom, the physical activities, the chance to enjoy time spent with one another, the opportunity to reflect on the year nearing a close and the ability to engage with some different teachers, many were able to meet and get to know in this one week away.

While Yr 8 students may not always fully share the many details of their camp experience with parents and adults, including just how much fun they truly had, their smiling faces, genuine care for one another and their full participation in the activities told the story itself. The OEG and Redlands staff were extremely impressed with their positive mindset, team attitude and full engagement throughout the week. Well done to all 12 camp groups for fully embracing this experience and hopefully finding a few takeaways to apply back at school.

STEAM

What Can We Do To Protect Our Coral Reefs?

Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 November

As Redlands continues to offer experiences to students that explore modern approaches to thinking and learning, next week Year 8 will be participating in a two day STEAM project to collaborate in team multi-disciplinary learning environments.

This specific theme, stemming from the 2018 International Year of the Reef, will concentrate on exploring aspects of climate change and global warming that cause coral bleaching, along with the human footprint, another factor that also significantly affects coral reefs.

With Yr 8 Tutors and Specialist teachers involved, students will journey through a project-based learning experience that is focusing on the declining coral reefs of the world and developing solutions to one of three challenges: Over-Fishing, Climate Change or Human Impact.

Students will be able to wear their Redlands Sports uniform and, as the learning experiences will be integrating technology, students will be required to ensure that they have their laptops (fully charged), mobile phones (technology activities), headphones and pencil cases as their essential learning resources.

Exam Block

Congratulations to all Yr 8 students on a fantastic Exam Block. Students came prepared each morning with all of their materials. They took the experience seriously and understood the expectations of the week.

As examinations are returned to students these next two weeks, we strongly encourage students to use their feedback for further improvement. Students are encouraged to:

  1. Check marks carefully
  2. Celebrate correctly answered questions
  3. Learn the content from incorrectly answered questions
  4. Ask the teacher for further clarification with things that are not understood
