Onstage Selection

Congratulations to Yr 12 Drama student Tom Wightwick who has been selected for Onstage 2020 for his lighting design for the play Black Diggers (2014) by Tom Wright. Black Diggers by Tom Wright addresses the perception and reality of racism in Australia through the untold story of Indigenous soldiers, throughout World War 1. The play’s constant shifts in time and place over a 69 year period, from 1887 to 1965 highlights the two-faced nature of Australia’s racist culture, which is still faced by Indigenous Australians today. This unrealistic façade is realised in his design through contrasting colours.

He addressed the episodic and Brechtian nature of the play through the transformative set, lighting colour and projection, communicating both location and time. He chose not to reflect the changing dates and time through the lighting as a metaphor for the presence of systemic racism throughout Australia’s history.

Onstage 2020 will be released virtually in February 2021.
