“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Our School motto is such a rich and inspiring encouragement that captures so much of the Redlands values.
Recently a class was discussing this metaphor and formulated a list of all the aspects the metaphor of light captures: goodness, purity, guidance, truth, removes fear, brings clarity, helps to see beauty, brings safety, brings warmth and is associated with happiness.
It is interesting to connect these concepts to the motto as it begins to bring into focus the emphasis of this motto that is sometimes overlooked. The light it is referring to, in the original context, was the light that is given by Jesus himself. The light of Jesus shines in the darkness bringing all of these qualities and each of us are to reflect that light.
The particular aspect that resonates with me is that light helps us see beauty. As our city celebrates Vivid and we rug up and set off to the city to enjoy the beautiful array of colours and movement, I am delighted by the idea of the inherent beauty of light. Although it is beautiful at all times, it is especially noticeable when we are standing in darkness. This is true of Jesus who is radiant in the times we feel the darkness all around us. It is also true of our own good deeds: the acts of kindness, gentleness or humble service that are deeply appreciated especially when the recipient is feeling pressured or sadness.
I have been especially encouraged by our student and staff body over the last term who have taken this idea to heart. Students specifically checking in on teachers, some who even brought coffee for their teachers. Staff giving gifts, flowers or words of gentle encouragement; volunteering to do an extra duty to assist a colleague. All these are acts of kindness that glow bright, brings our community that beauty of shining light. This is living out our motto.
