Redlands Instrumental Competition
The annual Redlands Instrumental Competition was held in the Edwards Auditorium on Monday night, showcasing highly sophisticated levels of instrumental music, where finalists explored a wide variety of musical styles and performance contexts. The skills of students across the three divisions was outstanding and a credit to the technical ability and expressive playing of each finalist, under the guidance provided by their Private Music tutors and School accompanists. The Music Department would like to congratulate all 2020 finalists for their wonderful performances.

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the superb accompanying of Mr Zi-Hao Li and Mr Damon Wade who have supported the finalists in preparing for this competition. Adjudicating the competition this year was Mr James Kortum, lecturer in Flute at the Sydney Conservatorium. His feedback to the students was positive and enriching, and encouraged students to continue reaching for new heights in the exploration of tone colour, expression and musical interpretation.

Yrs 4 and 5 Music Instrumental Programs
It has been a joy to be able to have all instrument groups playing again for these last couple of weeks of MIP for 2020! We are grateful for the flexibility of our staff who have embraced the idea of ‘MIP Picnics’ in order to measure out the required distancing for our students. Though traditionally our MIP program would conclude with a big concert for parents and friends in Week 3, the current climate and the COVID-19 adjusted programming has prevented us to provide this sense of celebratory closure. Just the same, we can assure you it has been a delight to hear and see everyone join together for a ‘last hurrah’ before the program concludes for 2020 and the instruments returned. For student and family planning, the next two weeks will flow as follows:
MIP Week 2 – All Play
Please bring your instruments and music.
MIP Week 3 – ‘Meet the Musician’ Incursion
Please return your instrument for annual servicing and stocktake noting that students enrolled in any Junior Campus Cocurricular Music Ensembles will retain their instrument through to Week 6.
Meet the Musician Incursion
In Week 3, when all school hired instruments are returned, we have organised for one of our extraordinary teacher-performers to present a Meet the Musician performance for our Yrs 4 and 5 students. Sandy Sin is a world-respected percussionist and has designed an exciting educational concert for our young musicians. Students will explore the wonderful world of orchestral percussion as part of this learning experience.
Junior and Senior Campus Lunchtime Concerts Series
For this semester, the Lunchtime Concerts Series will be held on the Junior and Senior Campuses as student only concerts due to COVID restrictions. While parents are unable to join us on campus, students performing will be able to invite their friends to watch the lunchtime concerts.
Junior Campus (Weeks 4 and 5): Tuesday 3 – Friday 13 November
Senior Campus (Weeks 6 and 7): Monday 16 – Wednesday 18 November
Music Groups and Ensembles Recording Project
For end of year events, the Music Department has consolidated a range of creative projects to deliver a very different performance for 2020. Various Music groups and Ensembles will be involved in recording projects across Weeks 5 and 6, working in conjunction with Redlands Sound Engineer Mr Pete Atkins and Videographer Mr James Taggart, from Tagged Pictures. Specific details relating to recording schedules will be communicated to the students in Week 3.
Ensemble Participation, Attendance and Punctuality at Rehearsals
Many ensembles are currently rehearsing and preparing repertoire for end of year events. A reminder that regular, punctual attendance to Music Ensemble rehearsals is imperative as students are underway in preparing for recordings end of year events.
In the event of absence, please email juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au for Junior Campus Ensembles and seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au for Secondary Campus Ensembles.
