Rescheduled: Yrs 11 and 12 Performance Night
Yr 12 student, Erin Pacholke, has organised a performance night for Yrs 11 and 12 to gain some valuable practice of their music and theatre items in front of an audience of friends and family. This event will now be held on Friday 15 June from 6.00 – 7.30pm in the Music Centre on the Senior Campus. There will be no admission price for this event but students will be encouraging donations in support of Headspace.
Service Learning
Next week Yr 8 will be visiting the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) on Thursday as part of the Service Learning they have been doing on environmental challenges this year. This day involves several hands on experiences giving students an opportunity to explore the impact our community has on the local marine environment. It will be a first hand experience in applying their Geography and Science knowledge to exploring the relationship between urbanisation and the Sydney Harbour marine ecosystem.
Yr 10 have been spending some of their Tutor Time learning about homelessness. This term students will have an opportunity to participate in the Redlands Vinnies School Sleepout on Thursday 28 June. This is a school version of the CEO Sleepout that also takes place at this time of year. Students will be camping out at school on Thursday night and will have a range of guest speakers to further develop our understanding. The following morning students will participate in a series of workshops to further develop awareness of the causes homelessness and the issues faced by homeless people. While this will be a fun experience we are hoping that there will be lots of thoughtful discussion and reflection.
This event is a fundraiser for three important organisations. For many years we have supported the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. We also support Taldumande Youth Services, a locally based youth crisis refuge, and this year we hope to also provide some support to Orange Sky, an innovative laundry service for homeless people created in 2014 by two best mates who had an idea to put two washing machines and two dryers in the back of a van, and wash and dry clothes for free whilst providing connection and conversation to people living on the streets.
In the coming weeks students will be developing their plans for both the fundraising and collection of donations. We will be seeking donations of basic toiletries and new warm socks and underwear for the Matthew Talbot Hostel where Redlands students volunteer on Monday mornings during breakfast service throughout the year. When you are next at the supermarket can you please consider picking up some extra items to donate.
