Year 11

Examinations

Yr 11 HSC and IB Examinations have run smoothly this week. I must extend thanks to Mr David Randall, Mr Darren Taylor and Ms Jane Sharman for their efforts ensuring the success of these examinations. In addition, acknowledgement must go to our team of invigilators, particularly parent volunteers who generously give their time and the Learning Plus staff. Our Yr 11 students have been prompt, well dressed and in good spirits, which is a mark of their maturity and commitment to their academic studies. This has been thoroughly pleasing to witness.

Innovative Design

Yr 11 Textiles, Design and Technology, and IPT courses are currently exhibiting their major works on the first floor of Learning Hub for the next two weeks. The exhibition showcases a variety of work from Yr 11 students. Textiles and Design works focussed upon Upcycling to create new garments and accessories. Design and Technology works focussed on Innovation and Me – ‘How far have we come and where can we go?’. Students choose an area of interest, designed and then produced a product, system or environment to meet a genuine need. The focus for IPT students was Website Design and Function.

Nina Casey-Brown produced a pair of high waisted wide legged pants, developed from a range of men’s and women’s trousers and shirts, which were printed, laser cut, appliqued, and quilted together. The combination of construction and decorative techniques, replicated her inspiration of the ‘Imperfect patterns of nature and reflected the silhouette of vintage 1970s wide legged trousers’.

Carmen Brisson was inspired by Antoni Gaudí. The appliqued denim on denim is inspired by the broken tiles of the benches in Park Güell, Barcelona. Whilst the fabric painted cross on the back of the dress is taken from the cross on the tower by Gaudi in the same park. She chose ruffled tulle to complement the resilient and sturdy look of denim, thereby merging the idea of high fashion with street wear.

Gabi Drage was inspired by the designer Iris Van Herpen and Gabi designed her garment to mimic a sea slug which, although colourful, can only see back and white. The blazer and silk organza trousers illustrate what is in the sea slug’s view, but the inner lining and laser cut back, represent the varied and exotic colours of these creatures.
