60 Years Since Establishment of Parents and Friends Association

This year we are celebrating 60 years since the first Parents and Friends Association was established. Redlands parents have played a very important role in the School’s development in many different ways such as volunteering across various areas of the School, organising Redlands Spring Fairs and supporting a broad range of fundraising efforts, for example the Science Block (R), Redlands Hall, Lang Gym, High Country Campus, the Fitness Centre, the New Learning Hub and the means-tested Redlands Foundation  Scholarships.

We greatly appreciate the involvement of parents contributing to the advancement of the School in many different ways. The strength of the Redlands community has been appreciated this year, where many groups have demonstrated care for each other by contacting new families and making them feel welcome, and by making connections to those who are in need, such as our Victorian Alumni or Old Girls.

Family Trivia Night

This Saturday we were scheduled to host our bi-annual Redlands Spring Fair but due to current circumstances, plans have been adjusted and an alternative event, Family Trivia Night, has been planned.

From the Principal

We are all working on creative ways to connect this year and it has been wonderful to note the RPFA initiative to provide an online Fun Family Trivia afternoon, which will be held on Sunday 20 September from 4.30-6.00pm. It will be a fun event and provide an entertaining way to connect with each other. Bookings can be made here.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Junior School House Football competition last Saturday and seeing the House spirit on display. Whilst we obviously have some very talented footballers in the School, it was most encouraging to see students playing for the first time and trying a new activity. My thanks to Mr Dunne and our Football coaches who made the day possible.

The recent Year 12 HSC Art Exhibition was most impressive in terms of the creativity displayed, as well as the depth of personal reflection, wisdom and preceptive analysis of the concepts explored. Whilst it is not the same as being present, I know that parents would have appreciated being able to view the exhibition online. To experience the Virtual Tour, please click here. If you hover over the green/white circle in each space, a video of the student will appear to provide an insight into their art-making practice. We are also looking forward to the upcoming Year 12 IB Art Exhibition.

As I write this article, I have just been asked by the Prefect group to record a message for the upcoming R U OK Day assembly that they are leading. Our leaders have inspired me this year, as they have continued to look beyond their own needs, and thoughtfully planned how they can make a positive impact on the student body.

I again encourage all parents and carers to please complete the strategic planning survey that you would have received via email. The last day to complete the survey is this Friday 4 September. My thanks to all who have taken the time to provide this important feedback.

Redlands Students Need Your Help

We need new members to add to our friendly team of volunteers who assist Redlands students in Yrs 7-12 with exams and assessments throughout the year. We welcome Prep, Junior and Secondary School parents, grandparents, friends and Redlanders.

Our volunteers respect confidentiality, are reliable and punctual, patient and relaxed. Legible handwriting is a bonus. If this describes you, come and join our team! You can choose the exams and assessments for the subjects and years in which you are interested to suit your schedule.

No subject specific knowledge is required; you are simply there to read and/or write what the student dictates, and to regulate the time. Bad spelling? No problem – spelling is ignored when there’s a writer. Illegible handwriting? You could be a reader (no writing required) or supervise time for a student or a small group.

Our students are very appreciative of the support they are given. If you would be interested in finding out more about helping with exams, please contact Saralie Pincini at spincini@redlands.nsw.edu.au or on 9968 9854.

Summer Second Hand Uniform Sale

Due to high demand for second hand uniforms, the RPFA is going to trial an online sale of summer uniforms. Next Monday details will be emailed on how to order and pay online. Collection will be in the last week of Term 3. At this stage we don’t have the capacity to accept any more donations of pre loved uniforms, but will update parents in Term 4.

Funds raised from the second hand uniform sale are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund. Everyone’s support is greatly appreciated!

Go Open

Over the past few weeks there has been a concerted focus across the School for teachers to open up their classrooms for observations of each others’ practice. Our theme this year was a focus on ‘Learning Environments for Thoughtful Interactions’ and teachers have been sharing reflections of how the learning environments they observed have facilitated thoughtful interactions in the classrooms. I have enjoyed popping into classrooms across various faculties and observing the varied, dynamic and collaborative learning environments, whether it was students conducting experiments in Science classes or students creating etchings in Visual Arts classes. We hope this regular reflection on our practice will lead to an enhanced culture of learning for our teachers and students across the School.

Camp Updates

We have been regularly reviewing our annual Camps in the Secondary School in light of the latest COVID-19 restrictions. We believe these are an invaluable part of the educational program for our students; however, we want to ensure they run in a COV-19 safe environment. Accordingly, we have the following updates on our annual camps.

  • The Yr 11 Camp (scheduled for 12-16 October) has been postponed until 2021 in the hope that we can find another suitable time to hold the students’ final school camp.
  • The Yr 10 Camp (scheduled for 9-13 November) is currently slated to proceed. This camp will be reviewed at the beginning of Term 4 in light of the latest advice and an update will be sent home to families then.
  • The Yr 8 Camp (which was originally scheduled for early Term 2 and has been re-scheduled for 9-13 November) is currently slated to proceed. This camp will be reviewed at the beginning of Term 4 in light of the latest advice and an update will be sent home to families then.
  • The Yr 9 Camp (which was originally scheduled for Term 2) has been rescheduled for the week of 16-20 November and will run this week with an onsite experience for students. While Yr 9 students will not have the opportunity to travel to Arnhem Land for their camp, we are planning a cultural immersive experience for Yr 9 students to broaden their understanding of both Yonglu and local indigenous cultures. Students will be onsite for this camp and will connect with communities virtually and in person (if possible). More information will be sent home to Yr 9 students and families early in Term 4.

Virtual Just Dance House Winners

Earlier this term, students across the Secondary School submitted their videos to our virtual Just Dance House Competition. It was wonderful to see students across the Year Groups enjoying their participation in this event. I was privileged to be asked to judge the finalists for this competition and congratulate not only them, but all students, who submitted entries for this event. I would also like to thank the Heads of House and House Captains for organising this event and their continual efforts to further develop or House and School spirit with events such as this.

Yr 12 HSC Visual Arts Exhibition

While we know many parents were disappointed at not being able to attend the Yr 12 HSC Visual Arts Exhibition in person this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are very pleased to be able to offer the exhibition virtually this year for the very first time. Parents can take a virtual tour of the exhibition while also viewing each artist’s works and hearing their individual reflections on their artworks. The virtual exhibition can be found on the Visual Arts page of Redlands Pulse here.

Study Skills Tips

In her Study Skills Handbook Tip for September, Dr Prue Salter discusses the “Power of Collaborative Learning” with some useful advice below. This advice is not only relevant for our Yr 12 students as they head into their final examinations, but also for all students as they reflect on their learning at school.

“Learning with other students can be a very powerful way to improve your learning outcomes. You might be sitting next to each other discussing what you are learning; or working together in a group online and sharing your screens; or giving a friend feedback about an assignment. There are many benefits to learning to work with other students.

Motivation: Studying together can be much more motivating than studying on your own. Setting targets and working towards them together can help keep you focused on completing assignments. Often study done together is more active and engaging than studying on your own and this is much better for retention.

Deepen Understanding:  Discussing with a friend, being able to bounce ideas off each other, ask each other questions – all of these activities will help strength your neural networks and deepen your understanding of what you are learning. This can help to develop our higher order thinking skills.

Different Perspectives: Sometimes we don’t realise that we are only looking at things in one particular way and there are different and diverse viewpoints to ours. Learning with a friend can help you see things in a different light and broaden your perspective. This can help develop our critical thinking skills.

Build Teamwork Skills: Learning to cooperate, negotiate and problem solve with other people is a great skill to have in later life. By learning with other students you will have opportunities to learn to be a more active participant in group work and also develop communication and leadership skills.

Canteen Update

As stated last term, we have commenced online ordering in the Secondary School Canteen and we are strongly encouraging students to use this system for purchasing food in the Canteen. There is a much more extensive menu through the online ordering system and by using online ordering, students will ensure that their order is waiting for them at the beginning of Recess or Lunch and will not have to worry about availability of food items once they arrive to the Canteen. Students can pre-order items from the Canteen through Flexischools, and parents and carers can create a Flexischools account for their family via this link https://www.flexischools.com.au/ and link a credit card and student number to the account. More details regarding online Canteen ordering are available on Redlands Pulse

Study Skills

Dr Prue Salter spoke to Yr 12 on Monday about planning out the next few months in preparation for their final exams. Some of Prue’s tips about working collaboratively are below.

Examinations

Yr 11 HSC and IB Examinations have run smoothly this week. I must extend thanks to Mr David Randall, Mr Darren Taylor and Ms Jane Sharman for their efforts ensuring the success of these examinations. In addition, acknowledgement must go to our team of invigilators, particularly parent volunteers who generously give their time and the Learning Plus staff. Our Yr 11 students have been prompt, well dressed and in good spirits, which is a mark of their maturity and commitment to their academic studies. This has been thoroughly pleasing to witness.

Innovative Design

Yr 11 Textiles, Design and Technology, and IPT courses are currently exhibiting their major works on the first floor of Learning Hub for the next two weeks. The exhibition showcases a variety of work from Yr 11 students. Textiles and Design works focussed upon Upcycling to create new garments and accessories. Design and Technology works focussed on Innovation and Me – ‘How far have we come and where can we go?’. Students choose an area of interest, designed and then produced a product, system or environment to meet a genuine need. The focus for IPT students was Website Design and Function.

Nina Casey-Brown produced a pair of high waisted wide legged pants, developed from a range of men’s and women’s trousers and shirts, which were printed, laser cut, appliqued, and quilted together. The combination of construction and decorative techniques, replicated her inspiration of the ‘Imperfect patterns of nature and reflected the silhouette of vintage 1970s wide legged trousers’.

Carmen Brisson was inspired by Antoni Gaudí. The appliqued denim on denim is inspired by the broken tiles of the benches in Park Güell, Barcelona. Whilst the fabric painted cross on the back of the dress is taken from the cross on the tower by Gaudi in the same park. She chose ruffled tulle to complement the resilient and sturdy look of denim, thereby merging the idea of high fashion with street wear.

Gabi Drage was inspired by the designer Iris Van Herpen and Gabi designed her garment to mimic a sea slug which, although colourful, can only see back and white. The blazer and silk organza trousers illustrate what is in the sea slug’s view, but the inner lining and laser cut back, represent the varied and exotic colours of these creatures.

Absences

Just a reminder on processes for absences and approved leave. Please email the school as soon as possible if your child is sick and unable to attend that day. Please note that this is a dedicated absence email address only – any emails sent to this address will not be responded to. If a student is absent from school for any longer than two days, please supply a doctor’s certificate. No medical appointments should be made during school hours, including Thursday afternoon sport. This obviously does not include medical emergencies. Requests for approved leave should be made in writing to Mr Sean Corcoran. Please also cc me into this correspondence.

If you are in doubt as to whether to COVID test or not, you are to seek your GP’s opinion. If your GP does not think testing is warranted, he/she will provide you with a note for the school saying so. Please refer to this Australian Government Fact Sheet: COVID–19: Identifying the symptoms.

Secondary School Sport

Students and parents are encouraged to check the Sport page in Redlands Pulse for Summer season Sport training schedules.

Stress Management

Currently, Yr 9 students are in the midst of a heavier assessment period. Whilst, this is a timely reminder for students to revisit their time management skills, it can also raise some concerns regarding teenagers and stress. Included below are useful articles that provide advice on identifying stress; along with, tips and hints on how parents can help their child develop coping skills:

Pastoral Care Program: Acceptance

Socially intelligent people are able to get along with people of diverse backgrounds, characteristics and viewpoints due to their tolerance, open-mindedness and acceptance of others. Sometimes, this means accepting people even when they share perspectives or behaviours that you don’t necessarily agree with. Learning how to understand and respect these differences is an important part of effective communication. This week students have been exploring the value of getting along with everyone – not just their friends. They had the opportunity to practise open-mindedness and acceptance of diverse viewpoints and opinions.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Charlotte Waterland for being awarded first place in the Junior Prose category of the Mosman Youth Awards in Literature. There were over 100 entries received from schools in Sydney metropolitan area. Charlotte is an avid writer and this is a huge accomplishment for her and her piece The Boy Who Couldn’t Whisper.

Sport

Well done to all Yr 8 sport teams for a strong and spirited Winter season amidst the modified training schedules and COVID requirements.  Students and parents are encouraged to check the Sport page in Redlands Pulse for Summer season Sport training schedules.

Attendance

When sending a note through regarding attendance, please include a reason and specific information, whenever possible. This supports us in following up with students, parents and teachers appropriately. Sample reasons may include physical issues, mental or emotional concerns and/or COVID testing.

The Power of Collaborative Learning

With a longer lunch for Yr 8 at the moment and the Study Centre hours available to students, we are seeing an increase of students in younger years taking advantage of this study time and the additional teacher support. At this age, students are starting to realise the importance of early preparation and the power of team and collaborative learning.  Please see below for what Dr Pure Salter recommends and highlights on this topic.

Reminder

Students have been reminded again this week to stop calling their parents to bring in forgotten items to the school. If it’s medicine then that is considered an essential item, however pencil cases, laptops, sport bags, blazers, ties, exercise books etc are not essential. We are really encouraging responsibility and independence, and ask that parents support us in this.

R U Ok?

The message for R U OK? Day this year is There’s more to say after R U OK?’

2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. This week, Cowper Yellow, in their student run Assembly, addressed this important topic. You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. We have many wonderful supports at Redlands for students and we encourage the conversation, “R U OK?”. Should you have any wellbeing concerns for your children, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Junior School COVID Update of Events

As a School, we continue to review every scheduled event and evaluate each event in line with the current NSW Health guidelines.

Following the necessary cancellation of Yrs 3-5 camps this year, we are finalising a separate day of activities for each of these Year Groups with our camp providers, the Outdoor Education Group, who will run games and activities for the students on site with a COVID-safe risk management plan.

Our annual House Cross Country Carnival is still scheduled for Thursday 17 September and the revised plan will be to have it organised by Year Groups with each Year Group heading to the course at Cammeray Golf Club for their respective race and then coming back to school before the next Year Group heads out.

In relation to interschool sport, I was part of a meeting this week with other IPSHA Primary Heads and Term 4 school sport is being planned within local areas so Redlands would only play schools in and around the lower north shore which is akin to the current guidelines for community sport. Of course, these plans will be subject to the climate and guidelines of the time and then be reviewed by the School’s management team before final approval and support.

House Football Competition

Our Principal, Mr Webber, and I really enjoyed supporting last Saturday’s inaugural House Football tournament which took place on the Junior Campus oval. It was wonderful to see over 200 girls and boys voluntarily sign up to take part and represent their House and the sense of both House and School spirit was palpable. It was also wonderful to see a number of students take part in the first competitive game and enjoy the experience of being part of a team.

As has been the case at varying points this year with school sport, the creative thinking of our Sports department to provide some physical activity after Saturday interschool sport is acknowledged and there was already talk amongst the students of seeing if another House interschool activity might be organised next term.

Yr 5 Leadership Day

On Wednesday, Yr 5 students experienced their first inspirational Student Leadership incursion led by Cameron Brown from Explore Discover Act. Students were engaged in challenges and reflections that helped them understand and build awareness and appreciation of their ability to lead. Students were provided with opportunities to connect their learning to leadership environments with transferable skills, attitudes and behaviours. The course outcomes dovetailed well with our own Three Pillars of Aspiration for Students: 21st Century Thinkers and Learners, 21st Century Attitudes and being 21st Century Participants, encouraging them to become active problem solvers and responsible risk takers. We are looking forward to Cameron’s second visit in Term 4.

Seesaw

We have had a number of queries about student Seesaw account access from home and login details expiring. During Remote Learning students were given a unique Home Learning Code to access Seesaw from home. With the return to school, Seesaw home access for students is no longer required. All parents and carers are able to connect with their child’s Seesaw journal through the Seesaw Family app using the family login details. Parents and carers are able to use the Seesaw Family app to access any materials teachers share for Home Learning and any work students upload to their Journals. It is important to check that you are logged into Seesaw via the Family app. If you are logged into a student account, you may be prompted to update your child’s login details or see a message indicating that your child’s login details for Seesaw have expired. To restore your Family access, login to the Family app with your Family login details.

Allister Street Drop Off Zone

The Prep car line is moving well in the mornings and afternoons and I thank everyone who makes positive choices to keep our Redlands children safe. Can I please remind our Prep parents that if you drop your child off in Allister Street itself, please do not park and walk your child to the gate as this does create an issue with the drop off and pick up zone. From next week, there will be an extra staff member out on duty to open car doors and help students out of cars. If there is a specific reason why a parent has to walk their child to the doors, please park in surrounding streets and walk in. We thank you again for your understanding.

Staffing Update

Sadly, Hilary Luck will be leaving at the end of Term 3 after seven years at Redlands as our Assistant Coordinator of Music and MIC of Bands. Hilary has accepted the role as Head of Junior School Music at Abbotsleigh. During her time here, Hilary has made remarkable contributions to the Junior School Music programs and the Music education of many young students. She has also overseen a number of major musical productions and festivals and helped grow the various musical ensembles significantly. Hilary will be missed by staff, families and students alike. We wish her the very best.

Vodcast

This week’s Vodcast centres around Number Talks. Mrs Fiona Rugg presents a short clip on the language used to demonstrate thinking in numeracy activities and also provides a short example of how to encourage this language outside of the classroom. Please click here to watch all our Redlands vodcasts.

Numeracy Board

Our ‘Let Your Shine Board’ in the Prep School has been overflowing with everything numeracy the last two weeks. From Transition to Yr 2, our learners have demonstrated  through pictures and display, the beauty of the process of learning. At Redlands we celebrate the process a student navigates through to not only master a skill but how to adapt this skill to solve many different real-life situations. For example it is one thing to colour in a half a circle in a text book or on a worksheet but it is another thing when a learner can identify half of a group of items to share, or be able to cut a piece of paper in half and know what that means or even to ‘go halves’ when sharing something at home or school.

Next week our Prep board will have a focus on writing. We will celebrate examples of informative and imaginative texts and even some persuasive texts from our young authors. Again, we are going to showcase not the polished end result, but the process of learning to produce a piece of writing that reflects the structure practised. It will be lovely to share the different mediums our writers can share their learning as well. Writing does not always have to be presented on a piece of paper. I look forward to sharing these samples with you.

Happy Father’s Day

From all of us in the Prep School, we would like to wish all our fathers a very peaceful and fun filled Father’s Day on Sunday. We also extend these wishes to all the uncles, brothers, grandads and other significant male role models who will enjoy family time on Sunday. I am sure there are some very cute and gorgeous Prep items coming your way.

Spring Has Sprung!

We are very much enjoying the warmer weather at Redlands House. The children have been busy in the garden and enjoying water play again. Please remember to layer the children’s clothing as it can still be cool in the mornings and afternoons. Please also remember to pack extra clothing, including socks. Sometimes the children need some extra clothes when they get wet or dirty. Any donations of socks for us to use as spares, would be greatly appreciated.

Sport and Wellbeing

Recently when students were registering for summer sport they were asked the following question, “How important do you think sport is to your wellbeing?”. With over 1/3 of the school ranking it as a 10 and 86% ranking it as a 7 or above, it shows the importance of sport as a part of a truly holistic education at Redlands. In recent months with COVID reducing the amount of structured activities available to students, there has been increased appreciation for the value sport provides in fostering social connections, enhancing mental health and improving emotional intelligence. Sometimes we can’t appreciate something until it is taken away.

These important factors are crucial for young people to flourish and sport provides a place of safety and security for these life skills to develop and our students to maintain balance in their day to day lives. Particularly in a time of social upheaval and continual change, sport can provide a constant outlet for students to connect with friends, peers and ‘let off a little steam’.

When we speak of holistic education this refers to not just a broad based curriculum to stretch and extend academic pursuits, but a broad range of life pursuits that allow young people to grow physically, socially, mentally and emotionally. This is how we achieve balance in our lives, this is how we achieve wellbeing in young peoples’ lives, this is what we achieve in an education for life at Redlands.

Basketball

Basketball trials are now underway. A reminder that the Basketball preliminary information can be found on Redlands Pulse. All age groups will have two trials per week on Tuesday and Thursday and all students registered for Basketball must attend all trials.

Tennis

Last Saturday our ISA students participated in the Redlands Junior (Yrs 7-9) or Senior (Yrs 10-12) Singles Championships. There were some great matches and it was a great opportunity for students to play in some competitive matches. They played all their round matches with the Semi Finals and Finals taking place this weekend at Cammeray Tennis Courts. Our Development Squad students finished the Winter season with a mini competition. It was great to see the progress these students have made over the past couple of months. Our Redlands League students played their Finals on Saturday with the Blue team playing the Yellow team in the Final. It was the Blue team that were too strong taking home the win. Congratulations to all Winter Tennis students on their participation, attitude and effort throughout what has been a challenging season.

Important Dates:

Thursday 3 September – Summer Tennis starts – for the most up to date training groups, please check Redlands Pulse

Tuesday 8 September – Tuesday morning trainings start

Saturday 5 September – Redlands Singles and Doubles Championships Semi Finals and Finals. Our best Tennis players will compete for the title of Junior or Senior Tennis Champion.

Football Interhouse Gala Day

In our inaugural competition, brought about by the cancellation of our regular Winter season, we had over 200 students participate in this event. It was great to see so many students who do not normally play Football for the School sign up.

Competition was fierce on the field with fast paced games. The finals were based on the results from the matches all morning and, despite the Yr 6 Roseby teams winning all their games, they missed out on a place in the finals to Dumolo and Cowper. The 3rd and 4th playoff was Roseby and McDouall, Roseby winning 1-0.

In the finals, Cowper and Dumolo game was 0-0 and went to a penalty shootout with Dumolo saving 3 shots and scoring to win the overall day.

Year Group Results

Yr 3 McDouall; Yr 4 tie Cowper and Dumolo; Yr 5 tie Cowper and Dumolo; Yr 6 Roseby.

Final Overall Points

4th place McDouall 117
3rd place Roseby 127
2nd place Cowper 141
1st place Dumolo 143

Well done to all the students who participated on the day and thanks to the parents and carers who looked after transportation on the day.

Wednesday Sport

In our second week of the modified competition we had beautiful conditions for our Summer Skills program to continue and the oval was turned into a Tennis venue. Students are to be commended on their participation in this modified format across all sports.

Summer Sport Trials

Final reminder for those students who are involved in Representative Sport for Term 4 that there are trials before final team allocations on Saturday 5 and Saturday 12 September. Sessions are 90 minutes in duration and, in adhering to COVID-19 protocols, students will be separated by Year Group for these trials. Click here to view your session times and venue.

Cross Country Carnival

Our Carnival, scheduled for Thursday 17 September, will proceed with a few minor changes. Permission, details and notification for this event will be emailed to you shortly via Engage. To adhere to the COVID protocols, students will be transported to and from the venue and run in Year Groups rather than Age Groups. Using their entrant numbers from the Athletics Carnival, results will be split post event based on their Age Groups so the Age Champion can be presented. To view the course please click here.

Student Expectations in the Rehearsal Room

Safety during rehearsals continues to remain our number one priority in the classroom and rehearsal space. All staff and students are expected to adhere to the recommendations pertaining to social distancing expectations.

In consideration of these guidelines, students are reminded to:

  • Bring their own instrument (if applicable) to school for use in instrumental rehearsals;
  • Are organised with their own scores and repertoire as issued by Music Administration.

The Music Department has organised all rehearsals and resources to ensure that all students work independently with their own stand. Under no circumstance are students to be sharing a music stand with another student.

Hygiene in the Music Setting and Student Expectations

As part of our return to group settings, this continues to be a well-considered aspect of our overall planning and students involved in group instruction will follow the guidelines through the spreading out of rehearsals, utilising larger areas and rehearsal spaces to adhere to distancing, where possible. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of musical equipment and resources will be undertaken daily.

Instrumental Competition Auditions (Term 3, Week 9)

The audition process for instrumental entries will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present one work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece will not be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist. Application forms can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Please note: Entries are only accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.
