Year 9

Term 3 Assessments

Currently, Yr 9 students are in the midst of a few assessments due between this week and next week. It is a timely reminder for students to revisit their time management skills. Dr Prue Salter has several resources on her Study Skills website to support students during this busy time. Please note that the updated Yr 9 Assessment Calendar is on Redlands Pulse for parents and in the Yr 9 Pastoral page under Key Information for students. Study Skills Handbook can be found here. Science Week

In Week 5, students from Yrs 7-12 participated in a Paper Plane competition as part of National Science Week. The task was to try and make a plane from a single sheet of A4 paper that would fly the furthest distance or stay in the air the longest time. All students had a great (and socially distant) time, with the winners being awarded some great Science prizes. The winners in the junior division (Yrs 7-9) were Jack Forrest from Yr 9 (longest distance) and Lucile Thompson (longest time aloft).

Pastoral Care Program: Empathy

An important element of social intelligence is empathy. Whereas some students appear naturally empathic, for others empathy seems a far away planet. Fortunately, empathy is a skill that can be learnt through practice. This week students engaged in activities which had them discussing the meaning of empathy and how it differs from sympathy. Goals for this week:

  • Students understand what it means to be empathic.
  • Students gain experience in ‘walking a mile in another person’s shoes’.
  • Students apply five empathy skills to communicate empathy towards another.

Absences

Just a reminder on processes for absences and approved leave: please email the school as soon as possible if your child is sick and unable to attend that day. Please note that this is a dedicated absence email address only – any emails sent to this address will not be responded to. If a student is absent from school for any longer than two days, please supply a doctor’s certificate. No medical appointments should be made during school hours, including Thursday afternoon sport. This obviously does not include medical emergencies. Requests for approved leave should be made in writing to Mr Sean Corcoran. Please also cc me into this correspondence.

If you are in doubt as to whether to COVID test or not, you are to seek your GP’s opinion. If your GP does not think testing is warranted, he/she will provide you with a note for the school saying so. Please refer to this Australian Government Fact Sheet: COVID–19: Identifying the symptoms.
