Issue 26 2020 - 27 Aug 2020

From the Principal

On Monday afternoon I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to attend the Year 12 Music Showcase performance, which highlighted the exceptional talents of our HSC and IB musicians. Whilst I always enjoy attending performing arts events, I must admit to having had an extra spring in my step, as like the rest of our community, I have missed these events during our extraordinary year. The individual performances were outstanding, and I thank all staff involved in making a live stream possible for family members and friends to view at home, given the audience restrictions.

We are very conscious of the need to support all of our students during this challenging period, and in particular, have been focused on doing all we can to lift the spirits of our Year 12 students in their final year. I thank our Year 12 Year Advisor Mr Atkins and our counsellors Ms Luitingh and Ms Fullarton for organising a Wellbeing Workshop held online this week for our students. I appreciated the chance to address the students regarding ways that they can enhance their wellbeing and support each other as they lead into their final examination period and remaining days at the School.

Mr Corcoran and his team have been working collaboratively with our Year 12 leaders to plan a range of alternative events to celebrate and acknowledge the students’ contribution to the School. There are numerous fun-filled events planned for the final few weeks of this term, as well as alternative arrangements being made for Valedictory and other celebrations immediately following their examination period. Throughout this time, I have greatly admired the resilience and character of our students and the trust that they place in our staff, knowing how much they care for them.

I again encourage all parents and carers to please complete the strategic planning survey that you would have received via email. The feedback that we will gain from our school community is essential as we progress through the development of next strategic plan and collectively look ahead to our future. In due course, I look forward to providing updates on how the feedback has helped shape the key elements of our next strategic plan and our collective aspiration for Redlands.

Like all organisations we have had to think flexibly at this time, and I thank the Marketing and Enrolments team for their creative development of an online virtual tour, which incorporated staff leading video tours of the Senior and Junior Campuses as well as real-time Q and A sessions. You may be interested to see the final product or wish to direct people interested in the School to view the tour on our website

I am delighted to announce that the Peter Lennox Scholarship has been awarded to Phoebe Meers, who will commence at Redlands in Year 7 2021. Phoebe is a School Captain in her primary school and is a very strong all-round achiever in her academic studies and in Sport, Ballet and Dance and Service. Phoebe and her family are thrilled to have this opportunity to join our learning community next year.

I sincerely thank all parents, Alumni and the Class of 2019 whose very generous donations made this means-tested scholarship and opportunity for Phoebe possible. We look forward to being able to provide the opportunity of a Redlands education to another exceptionally talented student by awarding another means-tested scholarship for Year 7 2022.

I recently enjoyed the opportunity to join one of our Year 7 Science classes for the launching of water rockets as part of their Space unit of work. It is quite remarkable the force that air pressure can exert and the students were certainly impressed with the results.

Finally, I wish once again to acknowledge the wonderful support provided by the RPFA, the PCGs and FoGs in a situation that has been most challenging, given the ever-changing plans related to events. All involved have remained focused on what is possible and have continually reflected on how best we can support each other at this time. The RPFA is continuing to explore creative options for the community to connect and for this I am most thankful.

Winter Sports Internal Carnival

While I know there was much disappointment in our community with the cancellation of the last few weeks of the ISA Winter Sports season, it was wonderful to see the celebration of these winter sports and our community spirit during the internal fixtures on Saturday. While it was not the conclusion of the winter season we would have imagined at the beginning of the year, it was still a fitting culmination to a shortened and disrupted Winter Sports season.

On a chilly morning out at Macquarie University, I walked around to the many different sports on offer and some of the highlights for me were:

  • The tension of the Yr 7 and 8 boys Football match which went to a penalty shootout with Italy (I believe) progressing to the final on the 7th penalty kick. (Seeing the celebration afterwards, it felt like Italy was progressing to an actual World Cup Final!)
  • The healthy balance of competitiveness and fun during the mixed doubles matches at Tennis
  • Our Yr 12 Rugby players passionately coaching and cheering on the Yr 7 and 8 Rugby boys in the 7s Rugby competition and then seeing some of those same Yr 7s return to coach our 1st XV players in their internal 7s Rugby fixtures
  • The thoughtful speech given by our Captain of Hockey, Yasmin Gupta, to all of our Hockey players, reflecting on her many years playing Hockey for the School and what it all has meant for our Yr 12 students
  • The coed Yr 7 and 8 AFL match, which highlighted the growth of many of these players in our inaugural season of AFL for the Secondary School
  • The coed Football matches for our 1st and 2nd XI Football players played with camaraderie and fun.

Over the course of the day, I found myself saying on numerous occasions to fellow staff members, “This is so Redlands”, and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of community where days like Saturday are “so Redlands”. Thank you to the Sports staff and all of the competitors who made a day like Saturday possible.

Yr 12 Music Showcase

I know many of us have missed the regular arts performances this year which are such an integral part of our School. So, it was wonderful to attend the Yr 12 Music Showcase on Monday evening and hear our HSC and IB Yr 12 Music students perform much of their repertoire. I felt privileged to be a part of the small audience and hear our musicians perform at such a high level, and I hope parents were able to also enjoy these exceptional performances remotely via Zoom. Thank you to Mr Kuilenberg and all of the Music teachers, staff and tutors for their support for our Music students this year and for their efforts in organising this performance.

Yr 12 HSC Visual Arts Exhibition

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, we were unable to have the larger scale Yrs 3-12 Visual Arts Exhibition in Redlands Hall this year. However, pleasingly, we were able to scale down this event to still hold our Yr 12 HSC Visual Arts Exhibition this week. I was pleased to be able to attend the opening yesterday evening and enjoy these amazing works created by our senior students. Visual Arts Captain, Sunday Stephens, and fellow Yr 12 HSC Visual Arts student, Alex Kourakis, shared moving reflections on their experiences this year. What I enjoyed most was speaking to a number of the Yr 12 artists and hearing them passionately and movingly share their creative journeys which culminated in these amazing works. I hope parents were able to watch the opening remotely yesterday and will be able to see a virtual tour of the exhibition later this week. Thank you to Yr 12 HSC Visual Arts teachers, Mr Byrne and Mr Harpley, as well as the rest of the Visual Arts staff, for their support of our Yr 12 HSC Visual Arts students this year.

Musical Announcement

We are pleased to confirm that Grease will be the Redlands musical in 2021, provided the ongoing situation allows us to use our external venue, The Concourse. Students in the 2020 company will be offered a place next year, but unfortunately current Yr 12 students will not be able to participate as they will not be enrolled at the school in 2021. We realise this will be a tremendous disappointment for the Yr 12 students who committed so much to the musical earlier this year and were looking forward to performing in their final musical at the School. However, we are looking at ways to celebrate their involvement in the musical in other ways later this year. More information about the musical for 2021 can be found in the Drama section of Note Day.

Canteen Update

As stated last term, we have commenced online ordering in the Secondary School Canteen and we are strongly encouraging students to use this system for purchasing food in the Canteen. There is a much more extensive menu through the online ordering system and by using online ordering, students will ensure that their order is waiting for them at the beginning of Recess or Lunch and will not have to worry about availability of food items once they arrive to the Canteen. Students can pre-order items from the Canteen through Flexischools, and parents and carers can create a Flexischools account for their family via this link https://www.flexischools.com.au/ and link a credit card and student number to the account. More details regarding online Canteen ordering are available on Redlands Pulse

Congratulations

Congratulations to Yr 8 student, Charli Waterland for recently being awarded first place in the Junior Prose Category of the Mosman Youth Awards in Literature. Well done, Charli!

Chaplain

Chapel is time set aside in each week for students and staff to gather to focus on the faith of the Anglican tradition. This means the focus of that time is encountering the God of the bible, individually and corporately.

This week McCrindle released research that showed that during 2020, Australians have been praying more and thinking more about God. Sydney Morning Herald wrote, “Social researcher Mark McCrindle surveyed 1002 people between July 24 and 28 and found more than a third (35 per cent) said they were praying more and 41 per cent were thinking about God more. A quarter said they were reading the Bible more. Nearly a half (47 per cent) said they had thought more about their mortality and the meaning of life.” (SMH 23 August 2020)

Our students and community are, likewise, reflecting more about these issues and Chapel provides a sacred space that nurtures this important process. Students are encouraged to engage with the bible but in the end, as it is true for all of us, each one must come to their own conclusions.

The Chaplain has invited students into the space to contribute in a variety of ways. Over the term we have seen students share their experiences of faith, play instruments, lead in prayer, read a passage or share a thought or opinion. This has demonstrated the different spiritual journeys within the school body, while coaxing all of us to reflect and think more deeply about life.

Chapel has morphed into an online format this year with the many changes in the guidelines about gathering. Although this is far from ideal it does provide some unique advantages.

Students have commented that gathering as a Tutor Group to engage with the online video is a more personal and perhaps less distracting. They have enjoyed the musical component that has incorporated some different artists and styles of music. The Chaplain has tried to visit individual Tutor Groups.

Many parents have wondered what Chapel looks like. One of the great opportunities is that parents can view the Chapels on the iLearn page of their student. I would invite you to do this. At present the talks for Yrs 7-10 are focused on apologetics and so it is a little different from a standard exposition of a passage. Students can access via modules a number of different talks. Each Chapel is between 10 to 15 minutes long.

The Chaplain always welcomes discussion, questions and feedback from the school community as we all explore the essence of life.

Yr 11 HSC and IB Examinations

Yr 11 Examinations begin today in the Learning Hub. Please remind your child that normal school expectations apply with regards to full school uniform. Students who choose to attend in Sport uniform will be sent home. Students must be prompt to their examinations. Should your son or daughter be absent during the exam period, please email Mr Randall for HSC or Mr Taylor for IB, copying the ssabsence email address and also myself. This will allow us to schedule make up exams as soon as possible.

Go Open

At Redlands each year, time is dedicated to an initiative, titled Go Open that encourages teachers to view each other’s lessons in real time. This allows for the reciprocation of pedagogical strategies and for insight into teaching and learning in other subject areas. This year, the theme was Learning Environments and Thoughtful Interactions. I was lucky enough to be invited into Genevieve Comino’s Yr 11 HSC English Class, to witness a truly dynamic lesson on Othello. The aim of the lesson was for students to consolidate their learning on the play, in preparation for their Yearly Examination. Students were placed in teams, with the direction being to move around the room and to recall and write down as many quotes from the play as they could in relation to the main characters. Teams had different coloured white board markers and they wrote directly on the round tables in the classroom. Each team’s quotes were then assessed for accuracy and tallied. Students worked with vigour and relished the competitive environment, whilst engaging in productive revision for their upcoming examination. Of course, there was a prize for the winning team, and it was described by students as “better than chocolate”. A practice writing task was the next challenge and Ms Comino declared that she would write the “thesis statement” for the team that had claimed victory. I thoroughly enjoyed watching our Yr 11 students thrive in this lesson. Thank you Ms Comino, for inviting me to view your lesson, what a great way to start the week!

Tutor Time

Tutor Groups had photos taken this week so they can look back on them in years to come as a memory of the people they spent so much time with while at Redlands. Tutor Time has also been spent writing their weekly planners, working on their resumes, continuing to learn about anxiety and its impact on individuals, and discovering more about aged homelsessness.

Science Week

Last week as part of National Science Week, students from Yrs 7-12 participated in a Paper Plane competition. The task was to try and make a plane from a single sheet of A4 paper that would fly the furthest distance or stay in the air the longest time. All students had a great (and socially distant) time, with the winners being awarded some great Science prizes. The winners in the senior division included Ruby Gao for the longest time aloft.

Australian National Chinese Bridge Competition

Congratulations to Victoria Butler who was runner-up in the 2020 Australian National Chinese Bridge Competition. The competition consisted of three rounds: a cultural quiz about China, a cultural performance, and a 3 minute speech on a given topic in Chinese. Tori’s performances in all three rounds were highly praised by the panel of judges. Please see the following article posted on the official website of the Chinese Bridge Competition. You can see Tori’s landscape ink painting along with a photo of her delivering her speech on “Flying high with Chinese” featured in the article. Tori will represent Australia, competing against other teams from around the world in the global finals of The 13th Chinese Bridge – Chinese Proficiency Competition. In the past, contestants have flown to China in October for the global finals with all expenses paid by the Consulate-General of The People’s Republic of China in Sydney. Due to COVID-19, the competition organiser has yet to confirm the format for the next stage of the competition, but it may be online through Zoom.

Fitness Centre

Yr 10 have been amazing with their attendance at the Fitness Centre this term, having the highest attendance out of the whole school. Key athletes attending at least three sessions per week are: Lucinda Bentley, Finn Brookes, Jordan Iles, Isabella Lipman, Willem McCormack, Hugh Sellar, Olivia Stonley, Billy Thomas and Amber Williams.

Term 3 Assessments

Currently, Yr 9 students are in the midst of a few assessments due between this week and next week. It is a timely reminder for students to revisit their time management skills. Dr Prue Salter has several resources on her Study Skills website to support students during this busy time. Please note that the updated Yr 9 Assessment Calendar is on Redlands Pulse for parents and in the Yr 9 Pastoral page under Key Information for students. Study Skills Handbook can be found here. Science Week

In Week 5, students from Yrs 7-12 participated in a Paper Plane competition as part of National Science Week. The task was to try and make a plane from a single sheet of A4 paper that would fly the furthest distance or stay in the air the longest time. All students had a great (and socially distant) time, with the winners being awarded some great Science prizes. The winners in the junior division (Yrs 7-9) were Jack Forrest from Yr 9 (longest distance) and Lucile Thompson (longest time aloft).

Pastoral Care Program: Empathy

An important element of social intelligence is empathy. Whereas some students appear naturally empathic, for others empathy seems a far away planet. Fortunately, empathy is a skill that can be learnt through practice. This week students engaged in activities which had them discussing the meaning of empathy and how it differs from sympathy. Goals for this week:

  • Students understand what it means to be empathic.
  • Students gain experience in ‘walking a mile in another person’s shoes’.
  • Students apply five empathy skills to communicate empathy towards another.

Absences

Just a reminder on processes for absences and approved leave: please email the school as soon as possible if your child is sick and unable to attend that day. Please note that this is a dedicated absence email address only – any emails sent to this address will not be responded to. If a student is absent from school for any longer than two days, please supply a doctor’s certificate. No medical appointments should be made during school hours, including Thursday afternoon sport. This obviously does not include medical emergencies. Requests for approved leave should be made in writing to Mr Sean Corcoran. Please also cc me into this correspondence.

If you are in doubt as to whether to COVID test or not, you are to seek your GP’s opinion. If your GP does not think testing is warranted, he/she will provide you with a note for the school saying so. Please refer to this Australian Government Fact Sheet: COVID–19: Identifying the symptoms.

Assessment Extensions

Please be mindful that extensions for assessments are considered on a case by case basis through the Heads of Department. It is a school policy that students be given Assessment Notifications at least two weeks prior to assessment due dates. Students are expected to start planning and beginning these assessments at that time to avoid last minute issues or unforseen difficulties.  Tutors are available for organisation support and teachers are available for guidance in the Study Centre. Please see Study Centre timetable on Redlands Pulse and on the iLearn Yr 8 Pastoral Page. To see full details on assessments, please see the Assessment Booklet on the Redlands Pulse Yr 8 page

Cell Phone Usage

This week, students have been reminded to keep phones off and stored between 8.20am and 3.20pm. Teachers will confiscate phones when in use during the school day. Many students will suggest that they need their phones to keep in contact with their families throughout the day. This is not the school’s policy. Any urgent matters where parents need to make contact with students should come through the Secondary School Office. We strongly encourage students not to be in continual contact with parents during the school day so they can focus on their social development, practice coping skills, develop independence and have meaningful conversations with their parents at the end of the day. We appreciate your support in reinforcing this message at home as well.

Tutor Challenge

Congratulations to Dumolo Red for their correct answers and the most participation in the Yr 8 Tutor Challenge last week. This challenge included trivia and dance moves, including the worm. Well done Dumolo Red for showcasing your spirit, talent and participation!

Science Week

Students from Yrs 7-12 recently participated in a Paper Plane Competition as part of National Science Week. The task was to try and make a plane from a single sheet of A4 paper that would fly the further distance or stay in the air the longest time. All students had a great (and socially distant) time, with the winners being awarded some awesome Science prizes. The winners in the Junior Division (Yrs 7-9) were Jack Forrest (longest distance) and Lucile Thompson (longest time aloft). Yr 8 student Conor Petersen took 2nd prize in Distance. Well done to all those who participated!

Pastoral Care

This week in Pastoral Care, students will be learning about catastrophising and coping skills. Students will reflect on learning from failure and framing failures as opportunities for growth. Last week, students practised using an emotional thermometer to describe how they were feeling and linking that to their catastrophe scale to determine how bad an event really is, in perspective. This week students will be introduced to certain coping skills to help work through challenges and difficult times. Full lessons are linked in Yr 8 Pastoral Care page.

Coping Skills presented through YouCanDoIt! Education include:

  • Being aware of how upset you are and deciding to keep calm
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Finding a ‘time out’ area to de-stress
  • Finding someone to talk to
  • Finding something fun to do to distract yourself
  • Exercising
  • Healthy eating
  • Having a good laugh and not taking yourself or the situation so seriously
  • Being assertive so that whoever is being negative towards you or is pressuring you stops
  • Internal problem solving to figure out how to make the problem go away

Science Week

Week 5 was exciting celebrating National Science Week, the theme, Deep Blue: Innovation for the future of our oceans. From the Yr 7 Quiz to a Paper Plane competition, Science was ever present and represented. The Paper Plane competition was awesome, and the task was to try and make a plane from a single sheet of A4 paper that would fly the furthest distance or stay in the air the longest time. All students had a great (and socially distant) time, with the winners being awarded some wonderful Science prizes. The winners in the Junior division (Yrs 7-9) were Jack Forrest (longest distance) and Lucile Thompson (longest time aloft). Students also explored Nature Is Speaking – Harrison Ford is The Ocean.

Visual Arts

Head of Junior School

Earlier this week, like many people across the world, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Ken Robinson, an extraordinary educator and one of the world’s pre-eminent thinkers on creativity and innovation, whose TED Talk, Do Schools Kill Creativity? is registered as one of the most popular talks of all time, confirming that his influence spanned a far greater landscape than education alone.

In many ways, Sir Ken’s influence on people’s thinking around the world has had a profound effect and it is clear that his legacy will continue to have an influence in years to come. I have had the privilege of hearing Sir Ken present at a couple of conferences and in both talks, he articulated the significance of educating students to be divergent thinkers; thinking that is a more unstructured, free-flowing process and that generates a number of potential solutions to a problem, something that Sir Ken had seen lacking in education systems around the world.

A lot of Sir Ken’s rhetoric aligns with Redlands aim to nurture a learning environment where thinking is a way of being and that students recognise that the active process of learning is a consequence of thinking and the two are as much a collective enterprise as they are an individual endeavour. We also believe that the dispositions that we hope will stay with our students long after they leave us have to be nurtured and grown over time. These habits will, in many ways, be of far greater benefit to our students than merely the content that is covered in their learning.

As highlighted by Mr Webber in his Note Day article last week, Redlands teachers from across all sections of our school have enjoyed the opportunity to develop from the story of learning in each other’s classrooms in our Go Open project. Of particular focus this time has been the learning environment for students, one of the eight cultural forces that exist in every learning space. From Harvard’s Project Zero research, these cultural forces: routines, opportunities, time, language, environment, modelling, expectations and interactions exist in every classroom and the challenge for teachers is to leverage these forces to maximise a culture of thinking in the classroom.

I have enjoyed being part of these classroom visits and have been impressed by how colleagues have helped each other see or notice something that they can’t see themselves through well-placed observations or a with a well-situated question to a colleague in need of advocacy and support. These types of practices help create a culture of thinking as we know that effective teaching takes more than good planning and design; it also requires attention to the culture of our classroom so that it supports students’ development as thinkers and learners capable of deep understanding.

Whilst continuing with our everyday schedules, the learning and rich discussions between our staff have been both invigorating and affirming and also reminded me of the quality of continuous learners that Redlands fosters amongst its staff.

As a fierce advocate of collaboration between teachers, Sir Ken firmly believed that in education, when great things have been achieved, there has always been collective effort from people with diverse expertise, something that our Go Open sessions have affirmed.

House Football Competition

I am looking forward to cheering on the girls and boys taking part in this Saturday’s inaugural House Football tournament which takes place this Saturday on campus instead of our usual representative sports program. I thank Mr Dunne for his creative solution to providing our girls and boys with the option of playing sport and building House spirit despite the cancellation of interschool sport, and it has been great to see the enthusiasm it has also generated amongst the students too.

Author and Redlander Visits

This week, acclaimed children’s author and Redlander, Lisa Nicol, came to visit and speak with Yrs 3 and 4. Amongst much excitement and interest, Lisa talked about her books, Vincent and the Grandest Hotel on Earth, Dr Boogaloo and the Girl Who Lost Her Laughter and her upcoming picture book, The Ballad of Dexi Lee.

Similar to tips from our Term 1 author-in-residence, Jack Heath, Lisa shared her use of keeping a notebook, using her imagination and working collaboratively with others, as important elements of nurturing her own creativity. The students read a number of Lisa’s books during both the period of online learning and in Library lessons so had lots of great questions for her. They were also excited to hear she had been a student at Redlands too and had enjoyed her time in Dumolo House!

Roseby House Captain

With our Roseby House Captain, Roy Rivera, returning to the US this week, I am delighted to announce our new Roseby House Captain is Joshua Colpani. Josh has been at Redlands since Preschool and it was lovely to see the sense of support for this appointment amongst his Yr 6 peers when it was announced this week. We wish him well as he takes up this student leadership role for the rest of the year.

Writing Success – Oscar Pearce

Last night, Yr 6 student, Oscar Pearce, was announced as this year’s runner-up in the Poetry section in this year’s Mosman Youth Awards in Literature. With no poetry section for primary students, Oscar submitted a poem entitled Imprisonment in the competition for Yrs 7-9, which adds to this noteworthy achievement for him. Well done, Oscar!

Last Thursday evening saw our the termly meeting of our Junior School Class Parent Group via Zoom. The group was also delighted to welcome our Principal, Mr Webber, to the meeting where he was also able to the group and take any questions.

A question I posed to the group which I have also shared with staff is how can we enable connections with families around all aspects of school life in these current times? Normally we have events such as gallery walks, special days such as Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day breakfasts, our Junior Music Festival always attracts a capacity crowd, and families have not been able to attend sport where there is often time for them to connect socially too. Even the everyday conversations at drop off and pick up are not happening in the same way at the moment.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions, I would be grateful to hear them via email.

Upcoming Charity Event

As mentioned in our assembly this week, we are looking forward to holding a joint fundraiser in September for both Bear Cottage (which was cancelled back in March as we moved to online learning) and The Kids’ Cancer Project; charities that we have had a strong affinity and connection with. Further details will be forthcoming as we look to support these two charities again this year.

Go Open

This week our staff have been participating in Go Open classrooms. Go Open is a time where our staff across the Junior Campus open their doors to celebrate the dynamic and highly professional culture of learning that flourishes at Redlands. Staff are encouraged to visit other classes outside their Year Group and across the campus to provide a wide variety of experiences to reflect and learn from. The theme this year is Learning Environments for Thoughtful Interactions. Each staff member was asked to visit a colleague’s classroom when they are open for visitors. I saw some fabulous Music and French lessons and watched Numeracy groups in Kindergarten, watched our Yr 1s write about their visits to a magic beach and I also was able to participate in Yr 1 Reading groups. When visiting classrooms, the staff are encouraged to reflect upon the following points and then provide feedback.

The Learning Environment:

  • How was the arrangement of space used to facilitate thoughtful interactions?
  • How was student thinking and their development of ideas made visible to one another?
  • Impressions and highlights from the lesson?
  • What was the purpose or learning goal of the lesson you observed?
  • How you could apply your “learnings” to your own teaching?
  • Further questions you might have?

It truly is a wonderful way to celebrate the diversity of teaching and to learn from each other.

Staff Update

As you would have heard by now, Samantha Kourakis, Dean of Students (Junior Campus), has been appointed to a wellbeing consultancy role at AISNSW and will be leaving Redlands at the end of this term. Sam has been with the School for 13 years and has played a significant leadership role in developing our wellbeing programs across the Junior Campus. She has provided exceptional care to students and their families and played a key support role for staff in all areas of pastoral care, in her roles both as Counsellor and Dean of Students. As part of the School’s SWAT (Student Wellbeing Action Team), Sam has contributed significantly to the development of our Student Wellbeing Framework and Scope and Sequence. Sam’s new role at AISNSW will enable her to provide support to a broad range of schools of varying demographics, in enhancing their wellbeing programs and student support. Whilst she will be missed, I know that Sam is looking forward to the new challenge and we wish her every success in the future.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Our K-6 parent teacher interviews begin next week via Zoom links. This 15 minute snap shot conversation will be an opportunity to talk to your child’s class teacher about their learning, where they are at and what are the next steps for them. Please email me directly for a time if you would like to have a conversation with me and I will arrange a Zoom link with you.

Sport

After school sports are additional opportunities for students to participate in year round sport after school. It is a positive way for our students to socialise and to develop their gross motor skills. Places are limited and enrolment is required. Please be aware that after school sports incur a charge which is billed termly. For more detailed information on each program, please refer to Redlands Pulse.

Calendar Update

Yr 2 swimming has been cancelled for this term. The opening times at Lane Cove Pool Complex adjusted this week which meant we were unable to continue our commitment.

Tuesday 8 October: Drama, Ballet and dance Photos
Thursday 10 October: Yr 1 Caines Arcade Day (more information to follow)

Please note the most up to date calendar can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Lost Property

This week we had the Yr 6 leadership team come to Prep to clear out and organise our Lost Property cupboard. They were able to distribute clothes back to their owners and anything that was unnamed we have kept for spare clothing. This will become a repeated activity so it is really very important that all names are clearly displayed on pieces of clothing.

Vision Screening

The StEPS program is a free population based vision screening program and is designed to identify childhood vision problems which cannot be detected by observation, behaviour, family history or vision surveillance. The StEPS program usually actively identifies and targets all four year old children in NSW to offer them a free visual acuity screen using a validated test. Sadly this testing cannot be conducted in the Preschool this year. If you would like to have your child’s eyes tested, call StEPS Vision Screening 9462 9550 for an appointment and clinic dates.

Secondary Sport

From the Head of Secondary School Sport

Sport Is a Privilege!

In our jobs as educators, we have the privilege of witnessing the growth and joy students receive through learning. Specifically, in the case of sport, we witness this through the opportunity of authentic, self-directed, intrinsically motivated activities which physically, mentally and emotionally immerse our students within the given moment. Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in their research into positive psychology referred to this as a ‘state of flow’. They attribute this state to a greater sense of happiness in life. When an individual is in this ‘state of flow’, they are focused so deeply on the task that any external problems outside of the immediate priority of the creative pursuit or activity at hand are forgotten. At a time in society when we are bombarded with negative media and in a continual state of change, these moments of ‘flow’ can be more valuable to our mental health than we may recognise.

Over the last few weekends, in what has been a mixed bag of Redlands Sport, I have witnessed these moments, some of which are captured below in the photo collage. Regardless of the competition or the score, it is the unadulterated joy of the game where our students can truly grow and develop as vibrant, happy and healthy young men and women. Sport is indeed a privilege.

Football

We had a great day out at Macquarie University on Saturday to celebrate the Redlands Football season. Despite the season being disrupted it was great to see so many kids out there giving it their all.

The day started with the U13 and U14 combined World Cup, which consisted on four mini teams (6-a-side) and featured Australia, Italy, France and Spain. The games were very entertaining to watch with a number of the “Pool” matches coming down to the final kicks on the game. The Semi Finals were just as thrilling, with the Australia vs Italy match ending in a penalty shoot out (which lasted 10 kicks from each team), Italy proving too strong in the end, taking the whole tournament.

The Junior and Inter Girls had another exciting World Cup with their final going through extra time and finishing with another exciting penalty shoot out. Luck of the European teams was again the surprise here with Spain taking the match.

The match of the day was definitely Team Kate (coached by Gerry Gomez) vs Team Lachie (coached by Adam Griffiths). On Wednesday Boys Football Captain Lachlan Edwards and Girls Football Captain Kate Stanbridge drew mixed teams out of a hat. With the teams drawn, there was some friendly banter in the lead up to the match from both the boys and the girls in the 1st XI teams. Team Lachie jumped out to a 2-0 lead and Team Kate looked to dominate the second half with some entertaining refereeing. The match finished 2-2. Much to the amusement of stand-in referee Gerry Gomez, the game went to penalties!

A huge thank you to the Friends of Football who provided some much needed assistance setting up the day, it was greatly appreciated.

Hockey

All three of our Redlands Hockey teams played an internal competition at Macquarie University on Saturday. With three even teams selected for the event, it was a great opportunity for our Junior and Senior players to play together. It was a fun atmosphere and an enjoyable finish to the season for all players. Best of luck to the Yr 12 students who have now finished their time in the Hockey program at Redlands. Many of these students have played Hockey for Redlands for a number of years and have been valued members of the Hockey community.

Netball

ISA

Last Saturday saw the Redlands Netball Gala Day take place at Dunnet Hall. All the girls had a great day, playing in mixed teams and being led by our Yr 12 netballers. Congratulations to the Vixens who won the Grand Final, beating the Giants in a closely fought match. Thank you to the Yrs 10, 11 and 12 students for their effort and participation across the day and for making it such a fun and enjoyable experience for our departing Yr 12 netballers.

A further congratulations to our Captain of Netball, Lulu Simpson, who was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Netball this year. She is a truly deserving recipient of this award and we thank her for her dedication and commitment to the Netball program during her time at Redlands.

A reminder that the ISA Netball season has now concluded and there will be no more games or trainings for our Senior or Intermediate teams.

NSNA

A reminder that the NSNA Netball competition is continuing as planned for the rest of the season. All Yrs 7, 8 and 9 Netball teams will play this Saturday and next Saturday 5 September. NSNA is releasing the draw weekly as fixtures have had to change. This week’s draw has now been finalised and can be found on Redlands Pulse. All teams will still play at the same time as previous weeks.

Training for NSNA teams has been reduced to once per week for this week and next to minimise clashes with Summer Sport trials. All teams will train on Thursday 3 September 2.30-4.00pm at Willoughby Leisure Centre. The bus will return all teams to school at approx. 4.15pm.

Please ensure all teams regularly check their emails from Ms Howard as well as Redlands Pulse for the most up to date information regarding the Netball season. Any player absences (both training and games) need to be sent to Ms Howard prior to the game or training so that coach and supervising staff members can be informed.

Rugby

Redlands Rugby brought a close to the Rugby season over the weekend, with all players being involved in a 7s Tournament. The standard of play across the whole morning was amazing, with tries being run in from all corners of the park and some incredible try stopping defensive efforts.

In the Under 13s Matches, Rory McMillan was everywhere, with some fantastic footwork finishing off multiple try scoring efforts. Alfie Leach and Eliot Stewart were two of the standouts in the 14s, Eliot scoring a solo try right from the kickoff and Aflie ball carrying leading his team to victories in both matches. Between the 15s and 16s, Samuel Chubb and Hunter Mennie continued to shine as leaders within our program. Samuel’s quick thinking tap and gos sparking the attack and Hunter just making efforts plays in attack and defence across the whole morning.

For James Reid, our 1stXV Captain, this was his last time to lead out his team and he did not disappoint. Sparking the attack in his own matches whilst cheering from the side lines for all of the Junior matches, James was the embodiment of our program. From the whole Redlands Rugby community and program, we cannot thank James enough for his efforts this year. I would like to also thank all of the Yr 7s who stayed behind to ‘coach’ the Opens Matches. Jesse Forrest, Charlie Gordon and Harry Asby were instrumental in the flowing attack that we all got to witness in the Opens clashes.

Whilst the season has been challenging, the development of our players this season has been tremendous and I cannot wait to see what the 2021 season will bring. I would like to thank all of our students and parents for their support throughout this year.

Tennis

On Saturday, our ISA Tennis students participated in an internal doubles shoot out competition. Students had the opportunity to pair with a number of different students throughout the morning with the aim to win as many points as possible from a total of 16. It was great to see our most experienced players playing doubles with our less experienced students and having a bit of fun with it. Students playing Tennis at Lane Cove are getting ready for their finals/play off matches this weekend, while our Development Squads will be putting their match play skills to the test in a mini round robin on Saturday. Our ISA students will be taking part in the Redlands Singles Championships this week with the finals being played on Saturday 5 September.

Important Dates:

Saturday 29 August – Redlands League and Development Squads – Finals/playoffs, last Saturday and ISA Singles Championships
Tuesday 1 September – No Tennis training
Thursday 3 September – Summer Tennis starts – Training groups TBA

Junior Sport

Wednesday Sport

Our first Wednesday of the modified Summer program was a great success judging by the smiles on the students faces and the chatter on the way back to class. Every student had the opportunity to come out with their Year Group for an hour and took part in either their Representative Sport or a variation of their Non-Representative Sport.

In a blast from the past, the Redlands House Basketball Courts were returned to their former glory where instead of travelling to our external Tennis venues, we brought in a dozen portable Tennis nets, red dot and green dot balls, rubber line marking and 5 coaching staff from our coaching team at Grand Slam Tennis. This allowed both our rep and non rep Tennis students from Yrs 3-6 to get back on court and prepare for the season ahead.

On the oval we had our first Touch Football training, having come in as a new sport for Term 4 for Yrs 5 and 6. New concepts of dumping the ball and scooping seemed to be picked up pretty quickly by those involved. Other students were involved in Futsal competitions, mini AFL games, boxercise as well as trials taking place in Dunnet Hall for mixed and girls Basketball. This program will continue for the next four weeks.

Term 3/4 Summer Sport Lists

We have a small number of students coming to Wednesday Sport who are unsure what Summer Sport their parents have signed them up for. Please refer to Redlands Pulse for our Term 4 Summer season information. Please note as advertised previously, there are no more spaces available for students to change sport in any of our representative sports.

Summer Sport Trials Term 3

For those students who are involved in Representative Sport for Term 4 Summer there are final trials before final team allocations Saturday 5 and Saturday 12 September. Sessions are 90min in duration and in adhering to COVID-19 protocols, students will be separated by grade for these trials. Click here to view your session times and venue.

As outlined above if you plan to commit to a Representative Summer Sport then the expectation is that you attend the trials associated with these sports

Drama and Theatre

Yr 12

Congratulations to our resilient and creative Yr 12 Drama students who presented their major works for Drama on Monday for the HSC external examinations. Works included Performance, Theatre Criticism, Costume, Lighting and Promotional Design. Special thanks goes to our wonderful Yr 10 crew, Kyle Banfield, Iris Buisman, Oliver Sigaloff and Samuel Virtue, who ably supported the Yr 12 performers in their final examinations.

The final IB Theatre Collaborative Projects will be filmed on Monday 7 September and made available for families to view via the iLearn Course page. We wish our students all the very best as they work towards this final stage of their Theatre Assessment.

Yr 11 Production

This term, Yr 11 IB and HSC students will present a series of original self devised works featuring physical theatre techniques of Frantic Assembly, DV8 and PUSH. These creative and engaging performances will be filmed in the Drama Studio and made available for families to view via the iLearn Course page.

Drama Competition

The final date for submission is tomorrow Friday 28 August with videos uploaded to iLearn. Judging will take place during Weeks 7 and 8 and the winners will be announced in Week 10. Application forms and information is available here.

Musical 2021

We are pleased to confirm that Grease will be going ahead in 2021, provided the ongoing situation allows us to use our external venue, The Concourse.

Students in the 2020 company will be offered a place next year, but unfortunately current Yr 12 students will not be able to participate as they will not be enrolled at the school in 2021.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Yr 12s for their commitment to the cast, band, production and make-up this year and wish them luck in their continuing Performing Arts journey.

Current cast members with a featured or principal role have the option to keep their current role, or to re-audition for a different role that may have become available. If you choose to re-audition, then your current role will become available for others, but you may also be considered for this role as well.

All other company members have the option to re-audition for a role in the featured ensemble or for a principal role.

All cast members in Yrs 7-11 need to indicate their preference via this Google Form by Friday Week 7 (4 September). All current cast members are guaranteed a place in the 2021 Musical if they complete the Google form to indicate they wish to continue.

Students currently in Yr 6, students who are new to Redlands, those who did not audition this year, and those who were unsuccessful this year, will all have the opportunity to audition for 2021.

The 2021 audition process for all applicants will be confirmed in Week 9 with all audition information placed here.

Students who were in the Band or various production crews this year will be contacted in Term 4 to discuss their preferences.

Music

From Stage to Lounge

As a unique point of difference, the 2020 Yr 12 Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate Showcase was broadcast live from the Edwards Auditorium in the John Roberts Centre this past week.

In celebrating in the musical achievements of all students completing their course studies in Music 1, Music 2, Music Extension and IB Music (Standard and Higher Level), parents, friends, family and staff were able to join our live streamed event remotely, as performances were delivered live from stage to the comforts of family homes.

While we are unable to welcome parents and friends in person this year, students and staff greeted our audience through the spirit of music, connected through the power of technology. As an interactive platform with everyone back home, the school community offered messages of support in real time via the webinar live chat stream. These words of appreciation were shared back to the students and staff seated in the auditorium, following the delivery of individual performance programs. To provide a picture, here are some of the messages received from our school community.

Great to be watching the live stream! Sound and video quality very good. Great job everyone!

Amazing performances! Thank you to all students!

Lucky onsite audience of students and staff getting a fab show tonight. But did they get a drink and popcorn like I did at home?

Herculean effort School Accompanist Mr Li!

Thanks to the instrumentalists, those accompanying and the staff and crew for putting on this performance and supporting the students.

Congratulations to all Music Elective students who presented exceptional repertoire as part the practical component of their course work. All students were extremely well prepared and have worked diligently over this past year, navigating various challenges and hurdles through self-determination, to produce music of a very high standard.

In supporting these students along this journey, we would like to acknowledge the work of the Academic Music staff Ms Arienne Brodie (IB Music), Mr Benjamin Castelli (IB Music) and Mrs Amy Richardson (Music 1 and Music Extension), along with an exceptional team of specialist musicians Mr Pete Atkins, Mr Solomon Frank Mr Z-Hao Li, Mr, Mr Julian Smiles, Mr Nathaniel Smith, Mr Damon Wade and Mr David Wooltorton, who accompanied the students in their performances. In forming our production crew, the Department is very appreciative of the technical specialist skills of Ben Peate (AV Coordinator), Peter Atkins (Sound Engineer) and James Taggart (external Videographer) in overseeing our Live Stream.

Music Awards Dinner Graduating Musicians 2020

Traditionally at this time of year, the Music Department would be hosting the Music Awards Dinner in association with the Redlands Friends of Music. As a central focus of this event, the department acknowledges all Yr 12 students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the musical life at Redlands, as members of the Cocurricular Music Ensembles program. Although we are unable to present these Graduate Portfolios at the annual Awards Dinner this year, our School Principal, Mr Stephen Webber, awarded graduating students with their portfolios at Monday’s Showcase, and Dean of Activities Mr Jon Gray presented these at Tuesday’s Showcase.

The Music Department will be presenting the Yrs 7-11 Music Awards and Certificates as part of end of term celebrations this year. Nominations and voting have now taken place and award recipients will be notified through Note Day over the remaining weeks of this term.

Farewell Hilary Luck

Sadly, Mrs Hilary Luck will be leaving at the end of Term 3 after over seven years at Redlands as our Assistant Coordinator of Music and MIC of Bands. During her time, Hilary has made a remarkable contribution to the Junior School Music programs and the Music education of many young students. She has also overseen a number of major musical productions and festivals and helped grow the various musical ensembles significantly. We will certainly miss Hilary’s valuable contribution and dedication to our Music program here at Redlands, and wish her all the very best for her new and exciting leadership adventure as Head of Junior School Music for Abbotsleigh.

Term 3 Music Ensemble Support Materials

Even though some of our Music Ensembles have been paused for the time being, the Department will continue to provide students with all the resources they require for ongoing independent learning and practising at home. Semester 2 repertoire has now been distributed to all groups, with a variety of support materials uploaded through iLearn and Google Classroom for the majority of ensembles.

Term 3 Overviews

Information relating to the specifics of weekly rehearsal arrangements can be found on Redlands Pulse. For any additional enquiries or questions please contact the respective offices.

Student Expectations in the Rehearsal Room

Safety during rehearsals continues to remain our number one priority in the classroom and rehearsal space. All staff and students are expected to adhere to the recommendations pertaining to social distancing expectations.

In consideration of these guidelines, students are reminded to:

  • bring their own instrument (if applicable) to school for use in instrumental rehearsals
  • be organised with their own scores and repertoire as issued by Music Administration

The Music Department has organised all rehearsals and resources to ensure that all students work independently with their own stand. Under no circumstance are students to be sharing a music stand with another student.

Hygiene in the Music Setting and Student Expectations

As part of our return to group settings, this continues to be a well-considered aspect of our overall planning, and students involved in group instruction will follow the guidelines through the spreading out of rehearsals, utilising larger areas and rehearsal spaces to adhered to distancing, where possible. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of musical equipment and resources will be undertaken daily.
