Year 11

Yr 11 HSC and IB Examinations

Yr 11 Examinations begin today in the Learning Hub. Please remind your child that normal school expectations apply with regards to full school uniform. Students who choose to attend in Sport uniform will be sent home. Students must be prompt to their examinations. Should your son or daughter be absent during the exam period, please email Mr Randall for HSC or Mr Taylor for IB, copying the ssabsence email address and also myself. This will allow us to schedule make up exams as soon as possible.

Go Open

At Redlands each year, time is dedicated to an initiative, titled Go Open that encourages teachers to view each other’s lessons in real time. This allows for the reciprocation of pedagogical strategies and for insight into teaching and learning in other subject areas. This year, the theme was Learning Environments and Thoughtful Interactions. I was lucky enough to be invited into Genevieve Comino’s Yr 11 HSC English Class, to witness a truly dynamic lesson on Othello. The aim of the lesson was for students to consolidate their learning on the play, in preparation for their Yearly Examination. Students were placed in teams, with the direction being to move around the room and to recall and write down as many quotes from the play as they could in relation to the main characters. Teams had different coloured white board markers and they wrote directly on the round tables in the classroom. Each team’s quotes were then assessed for accuracy and tallied. Students worked with vigour and relished the competitive environment, whilst engaging in productive revision for their upcoming examination. Of course, there was a prize for the winning team, and it was described by students as “better than chocolate”. A practice writing task was the next challenge and Ms Comino declared that she would write the “thesis statement” for the team that had claimed victory. I thoroughly enjoyed watching our Yr 11 students thrive in this lesson. Thank you Ms Comino, for inviting me to view your lesson, what a great way to start the week!
