Year 10

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you all had a lovely break from the school routine and managed to spend quality time with your families.

Pastoral Care Program

This term the Yr 10 Pastoral team have much planned for the students, focusing on a number of pertinent current and relevant issues. Our Pastoral Care program will focus on mental health and wellbeing, understanding the nature of worry, positive and practical ways to manage stress, and changing self-defeating behaviour to positive thoughts and behaviour.

In addition, we will be dedicating some time each week to help students to become ‘life ready’, by looking at skills such as writing resumes, applying for jobs, learning how to study effectively and efficiently and being prepared for Yrs 11 and 12. This week students have been asked to download a Term Planner and fill it in with details of all their assessments. They are to print it and physically stick it up in a place at home, so they and you are able to refer to it regularly. Next week they will also begin the weekly Monday process of writing a plan of action for that coming week as to how they will effectively use their time outside of school hours. The hope is that this will help them establish good study and organisational habits and technqiues this year to enable them to progress into Yr 11 positively.

Social Awareness Program

Our Social Awareness program will continue to focus on the theme for Yr 10 of homelessness having looked specifically as to how it affects women and young people, and now this term targeting aged homelessness. The plan in the latter half of this term is to establish a working group of volunteer students who will devise a plan for fundraising in Term 4 for an organisation of their choice. The working group will lead the whole Year Group in this initiative and will need to come up with creative ideas for fundraising, given the current climate of social distancing.

As always, Tony and I will post information on the Yr 10 Pastoral iLearn page that you can access via your child, should you wish to see in more detail what they are covering during Tutor Time. In addition, I will provide a summary of the week in Note Day, and often attach any articles or video links that the students will also be watching.

Due to still not having full school or Year Group gatherings, assemblies will continue to take place via Zoom and Chapel will be pre-recorded and shown to each Tutor Group via their Tutor’s laptop on Fridays.

Student Achievements

Congratulations go to the following students who received an Academic Achievement Award during the Whole School Assembly on Tuesday for their academic achievements during a challenging time in Semester 1: Ben Adamson, Eden Borrie, Iris Buisman, Will Christie, Louise Colin, Evie Farrell, Ashani Gupta, Aarav Kumar, Sophia Maxwell, Sophie McMillan, Jessy Sun, Dasha Sychova, Ashley Walton, Jessica Wei and Lauren Zhang.

Registration for ICAS 2020

The 2020 International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Science will take place on Monday 17 August in school. This competition is undertaken by over 400,000 students across Australia and the region, and is a rigorous test of scientific thinking. Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country. Students who are interested in Science can use the test to assess areas of strength and weakness. Success at the test is a way of demonstrating aptitude when applying for Science related opportunities in and out of school.

Entry for students in Yrs 7-10 is voluntary. Please complete the registration form before Monday 3 August if you would like them to take part. A fee of $15.95 will be charged to your account if you wish your child to participate.

More information about ICAS is here. Please contact Ms Simone Bryant, Assistant Science Coordinator, if you have any queries.
