From the Principal

Welcome back to the start of another new term and in particular to our 27 new and returning students. I know that they and their families will receive a characteristically warm welcome from the Redlands’ community.

My thanks to all staff who were involved in the Year 12 HSC and IB study workshops over the break and to those involved in running cocurricular activities. We are looking forward to our first round of ISA and IPSHA Winter Sport this weekend and whilst spectators are unable to attend at this stage, I know that the students are very much looking forward to the fixtures.

Further congratulations to our Girls 1st Basketball team who, after winning the ISA competition, have finished as the 2nd ranked Independent School team in NSW, following games against Pymble Ladies College and St Luke’s Grammar School yesterday. The team defeated Pymble but could not get over a very talented St Luke’s team. They have had an outstanding season and can be very proud of their performances and how they have represented the School.

We started our term on Monday with a staff Professional Learning Day, during which all staff enjoyed a presentation by Dr Peter Ellerton (Queensland University) on Critical Thinking and Classroom Practice. His presentation reinforced the significance of our Redlands Learning Platform and the importance of teaching our students to think critically, with the emphasis on this being a pedagogical process rather than a curriculum project.

Staff were then able to select from a range of workshops, presented by their peers, with over 80 of our staff involved in presenting on the day. The range of topics and the quality of the presentations was outstanding, with the entire day highlighting the expertise of our teachers. I enjoyed attending sessions on the importance of high-quality feedback for students, developing students’ entrepreneurial skills and an overview of our unique Winter School program.

My thanks to our Head of Teaching and Learning, Matthew Bentley and Dean of Teaching and Learning P-6, Stacey Smith for their drive and vision in making the day possible and to all staff who presented and shared their knowledge and expertise.

As we continue to face some uncertainty with the current COVID-19 situation, and looking ahead to events planned for the remainder of the year, we will continue to keep our community informed and the Critical Incident Management Team will regularly review the latest advice from NSW Health and AISNSW, as well closely communicating with fellow schools. The priority will continue to be the safety and wellbeing of all members of our community.

Yr 12 Legacy Gift – Students are Leading the Way

This week Yr 12 students participated in the annual Beard Growing/Crazy Hair fundraising competition. Boys grew their facial hair over the three week break, whilst girls came to school with crazy hair. Our staff also joined these efforts. Thank you to Mr David Linehan, 12CB Tutor for spraying his beard green. Over $200 was raised for the 2020 Legacy Gift which will be dedicated towards a ping pong table and the means-tested Peter Lennox Scholarship Fund.

There is still a chance to support our Yr 12 students and secure the Class of 2020 handmade tea towel.

Redevelopment of the Senior Campus

Landscaping of the Gerard St side of the campus and the relocation of the Secondary School Office and Student Services to the John Roberts Centre are being completed in the upcoming months. A great outdoor area will be created for students to enjoy during their breaks, as well as for educational purposes. Thank you to everyone who supported this state-of-the-art development.

Book Club

The RPFA Book Club had its last meeting via Zoom to discuss Bad Blood by John Carreyrou. It was a unanimous “thumbs up” for this fascinating thriller style, non-fiction book, many of us reading it in just a few days. So if you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, it’s highly recommended.

Term 3 will see us try a new schedule, introducing an evening meeting for the first time. If successful, we will continue the format of having one morning and one evening meeting per term. For enquiries and venues, please contact Lerida Grant on lerida@bigpond.net.au.

We would really love to meet some new members, so if you’ve been thinking of challenging your reading habits, please come along. We also have a WhatsApp group to discuss books and literary events.

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope the mid-year break was refreshing and relaxing for students and families after a sometimes challenging first semester. On Monday we had an excellent teacher-led Professional Learning Day to commence the term for staff. The day started with Dr Peter Ellerton giving a keynote address via Zoom on Critical Thinking and Classroom Practice. We then had 80 staff across both campuses present 33 different workshops where we shared our Bright Ideas with one another and celebrated our Culture of Thinking and classroom practice here at Redlands. It was certainly an invigorating and stimulating way to kick off Semester 2. However, it was also wonderful to see and hear the actual students return to school on Tuesday, bringing their energy back to the Campus.

During our opening assembly I shared some of my reflections on how we in the Secondary School have been facing the challenges posed by COVID-19 and some encouragement for students for this upcoming semester. An excerpt of this address is below.

“Now, in talking to a number of staff and students over the past week, I know many of us were pretty exhausted by the end of last term. The disruption, uncertainty and worry brought about by COVID-19 was certainly challenging. I do hope that all of you, over the holidays, were able to do those things that not only bring you joy, but also recharge your batteries, whether that was spending time with friends, taking part in the activities or sports you enjoy, enjoying the outdoors or getting away on a family holiday.

For me personally, being able to get back down to the South Coast of NSW and spend some time fishing, was just the tonic I needed.

As we start this second semester, unfortunately, we are seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases, predominantly in Victoria and now also in NSW. It is a reminder for all of us to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

This rise in cases also illustrates to us that, unfortunately, COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon, and this reality can be challenging for all of us as our worries about the disruptions and uncertainty for the rest of the year return. So, I want to leave you with some encouragement as we start the second half of the year.

Firstly, I want to let all of you know that it is OK to feel worried or down at times. However, it’s important to also remember we are all going through this together and we have each other and the strength of our community bolstering us. So, if you are going through a tough time, make sure you reach out and talk to trusted staff, friends or family members.

Secondly, we are often the toughest people on ourselves and can be our own harshest critics. So, remember to be kind and forgiving to yourself, especially as we face new challenges over the remainder of the year.

Third, focus on improving the things that we can control and do not waste our energies focusing on the things out of our control. While we cannot control some of the effects of this pandemic, such as missed holidays, cancelled events or changed routines, we can control how we approach these realities. I urge all of you to approach this term with a positive mindset and see any changes as opportunities for further growth.

And finally, I encourage all of you to start this semester with a sense of hope. Hope can give us meaning and purpose and it is important we start the semester with this optimistic outlook. I have previously shared a quote that has resonated with me from one of my favourite movies, Shawshank Redemption and it is pertinent today. Andy Dufresne writes to his friend, Red, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.”

Over the next few periods you will have the opportunity to reflect on the first semester and set goals and aspirations for the remainder of the year. Whether you are a Yr 7 student who has just finished your first semester of Secondary School or a Yr 12 student about to embark on your last, as you set your goals, I urge you to also reflect on your hopes and dreams. What will give you a true sense of meaning and purpose for the remainder of this year and beyond? And how will you achieve this?

So, to conclude, I challenge all of us to remember that:

  • It is OK to feel worried or down at times, but make sure we reach out to others when we need a helping hand;
  • Be forgiving and kind to ourselves, as we can be our own harshest critics;
  • Focus on improving the things we can control and don’t waste our emotions and energies on things out of our control, and finally;
  • Start this term with a sense of hope for the days, weeks and months ahead.

Legacy Gift Fundraiser

On Tuesday a number of our Yr 12 boys returned to school with moustaches and beards (or valiant attempts at beards) and some of our girls had crazy hair for the day. No, they were not breaking the School’s uniform rules, but instead were raising money for their Legacy Gift which will be an outdoor ping pong table for future student recreational use and a contribution to the School’s means-tested Scholarship Fund, in honour of Dr Peter Lennox. I would like to thank the students who participated with colourful hair and beards for the day, the students who made donations and especially the Legacy Gift team who has been organising a number of different fundraising events this year. Fortunately, all hair was back to normal and beards were shaved off by Wednesday.

Staffing Updates

Ms Abigail Walker has stepped down from her position as Assistant Yr 9 Year Advisor before she commences her maternity leave later this term. We are pleased to announce that Ms Eleanor Martin will be the Assistant Year 9 Year Advisor moving forward and that Ms Walker will be looking after Ms Martin’s Yr 9 Tutor Group until further notice.

CIS Girls Basketball Championships

As many of you would remember, our Girls’ 1st V Basketball team won the ISA competition in the summer season. As ISA Champions, they then went on to represent the ISA in the NSW Combined Independent Schools’ Championship yesterday. In their first game our team beat Pymble Ladies’ College to essentially advance to a final against a strong St Luke’s team. Our girls put up a great effort to draw level in the 3rd quarter before St Luke’s pulled away in the last quarter to win the game. This result essentially means our Girls Basketball team finished runner up in the NSW Independent Schools’ Competition. This is an outstanding achievement and I would like to congratulate the team consisting of Emilie Bessell, Meera Coburn, Olivia Hatch, Sasha Jansz, Phoebe Rathbone, Yola Reinecke, Julia Saunders and Kate Stanbridge. I would also like to thank the coaches, Ms Kate Seebohm and Ms Renae Camino, for their efforts with the team this year. 

COVID-19 Arrangements

As mentioned in my letter last week and outlined to students at our opening assembly on Tuesday, we will be commencing Term 3 with many of our COVID-19 arrangements from last term still in place such as temperature testing, staggered recesses and lunches and regular cleaning and disinfecting of high touch surfaces throughout the day. (A more detailed list of arrangements can be found in my Start of Term 3 letter here.) We also continue to ask parents to keep their children at home if they are unwell and to contact the Secondary School Office, the relevant Pastoral support person and/or the School Nurse with any queries or updates. Specific arrangements for the commencement of Winter Sports have been sent out by the Sports Department and we look forward to seeing students return to their competitions this weekend. We will continue to evaluate our arrangements and communicate regular updates to parents this term and, once again, thank you for your continued support.

Term 4 Departure Notice  

This is a final reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by this Sunday 26 July 2020.

As per our Conditions of Enrolment emailed to all families in December last year with the 2020 Schedule of Fees, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after this date.

From the Deputy Principal

Emergency Management at Redlands

At Redlands, our first priority is safety. In the coming weeks we will be conducting Lockdown and Evacuation Drills on both Sydney campuses – Junior and Senior – as part of our ongoing Emergency Training procedures. As you are aware, we have an Emergency Planning Committee in place, we have extensive emergency management plans in place, we train our students and staff, we conduct planned drills periodically and reflect and analyse when unplanned evacuations occur. This information is to remind you of our existing plan and approach.

Our Plans

The School works with emergency management specialists to develop and implement safety procedures, and the goals of drills throughout the year are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries, in the event of an emergency situation. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency response plans and improve our response skills. This year, we have incorporated additional measures into our plans in the event that we may need staff or students to shelter in place. This measure may be used in circumstances where we would wish to manage staff and student movement around the campus – like being advised of a confirmed COVID-19 case during the School day.

We do not generally announce in advance whether a lockdown or evacuation is a planned exercise. It is vital for the safety of our students, staff and any campus visitors that they are very familiar with our processes and can perform the required steps to complete a safe lockdown or evacuation without forewarning. In the case of younger children, we practise these more frequently and in varying formats so that they are not unduly alarmed.

Across the School, students have been reminded this week about what to do in the case of a lockdown or an evacuation and all new students are provided with this information when they start at the School. This information is also contained in the front section of the Student Planner.

Communication

We are so grateful for the patience and consideration parents and carers have shown through some difficult circumstances and changing arrangements across the first part of this year. A reminder of the following key points around emergency communication: 

  • It is essential that students do not use their mobile phone during a lockdown or an evacuation.
  • We would usually not communicate to parents that we are undertaking a lockdown or evacuation unless it resulted in a serious emergency requiring a longer disruption to the School day.
  • If an emergency situation does continue to disrupt the day, the School will communicate to parents via SMS if it is safe to do so.
  • In the case of an emergency situation requiring parents to collect their children, the School will communicate with parents conveying specific details about pickup arrangements.

Site Access

No person may enter or leave the site during an emergency situation, including students, staff, parent visitors or helpers. If you are already onsite during an evacuation or lockdown, you must follow the instructions of the staff, in particular the wardens (wearing coloured safety helmets). If you arrive whilst an evacuation or lockdown is in place, please wait patiently until it has concluded and it is deemed safe to enter the site.

Please talk with your child about the reason for these drills. Our goal, while practising important safety procedures, is to be sure all students feel safe and confident in how to respond. Community Code of Conduct

One of the recognised, highly valued and very special aspects of Redlands is our inclusive and cohesive community.

During the past 18 months, the School has been working in conjunction with the RPFA to develop a Community Code of Conduct, designed to provide guidance and to ensure mutual understanding of our shared expectations of community behaviour and interactions.

Sydney University Yr 12 Parent Information Session

Sydney University Scholarships Workshop

The Sydney Scholars Award is available to domestic or international students studying any degree at the University of Sydney. The deadline for scholarship applications is 30 September. This practical workshop will give students great tips and examples of successful applications and will be held on Tuesday 6 August from 5-6pm. Register here.

Illuminate Business Challenge

This week long challenge is open to any student in Yrs 9-12 which you can do from your home. You will be able to develop entrepreneurial skills as well as enhance critical thinking, financial literacy, problem solving and more. Chaplain

Mental health and wellbeing has been foremost in our minds as we continue to negotiate the ever changing landscape of life with COVID-19. Consistently through psychological research on wellbeing, one factor emerges as having a positive impact on wellbeing. This factor acts as a protection against mental ill health; sees a reduction in risky behaviour like binge drinking; reduces depressive symptoms and promotes dispositions like forgiveness and gratitude. This factor is spirituality/religiosity. The body of research convincingly shows that investing in good spiritual development is extremely helpful for wellbeing. Developing spirituality/religiosity means providing opportunities to explore questions about God. Giving time for celebration, learning and reflection is essential. Encouraging students to ask good spiritual questions and seek complex answers contributes to this development as well. Finally, time reflecting on rich texts of the bible is a good means of growth. Faith in a higher personal being does not, as some suggest, “poison everything” (a common phrase used by Christopher Hitchens), rather the research shows  it brings wellness. The staff Professional Learning Day allowed for a number of teachers to explore some of the research and reflect on the implications for the Redlands context.

Our school is committed to offering opportunities to develop good wellbeing. The Pastoral program provided valuable learning about Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and one component is the opportunity for Chapel. Although our students do not always appreciate the value, Chapel is an essential space in encountering the divine and forming a robust worldview as they explore the God question. Currently Chapel has been modified to enable students to participate in their Tutor Groups in the Secondary School and by Zoom in the Junior School. Additionally this allows an opportunity for the Secondary School parents to peek in and see what goes on. I invite parents to do so and always value feedback. Currently Yrs 11-12 are reflecting on Words of Wisdom from Jesus. Yrs 7-10 will be exploring a series on Faith speaks to the Critic.

Year 12

Welcome Back

Ms Wilson and I hope that all students and parents had a lovely holiday break, with some time to re-energise before the busy term ahead. Yr 12 hit the ground running this term, with Trials in Weeks 3 and 4, followed by a number of events building towards the end of term. We look forward to working with your children throughout this term, to create positive and lasting memories for them and maximise their academic success.

I would ask that parents remain vigilant of their child’s health – physically, mentally and emotionally. If they are showing any flu-like symptoms, it is imperative that they stay at home, get tested and only return to school once written clearance from NSW Health is sent to the school (including Secondary School Absences, and both myself and Ms Wilson). 

Regular check-ins with your son/daughter will play an important role for identifying any areas of concern, both at home and in their Tutor Groups. We encourage all students to speak to their Tutors, teachers and other support staff regularly during this term. 

Term 3 is a very busy rollercoaster for Yr 12 but it should also a fun and exciting time for them and we look forward to celebrating the upcoming milestones and supporting them through their final term of school.

Registration for ICAS 2020 

The 2020 International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Science will take place on Monday 17 August in school. This competition is undertaken by over 400,000 students across Australia and the region, and is a rigorous test of scientific thinking. Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country. Students who are interested in Science can use the test to assess areas of strength and weakness. Success at the test is a way of demonstrating aptitude when applying for Science related opportunities in and out of school.

Entry for students in Yrs 7-10 is voluntary. Please complete the registration form before Monday 3 August if you would like them to take part. A fee of $15.95 will be charged to your account if you wish your child to participate.

Year 11

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back for what is sure to be an exciting and jam-packed Term 3. I do hope that students and families enjoyed the winter break and are feeling refreshed and re-energised. Whilst this was a different kind of holiday for many students, the school was still a buzz on Tuesday morning with stories and anecdotes of the break. It was delightful to see our students so animated and ready to continue their Yr 11 studies. We would like to welcome Tim Taylor who has joined our Yr 11 cohort from Sherborne, UK. In addition, we would like to welcome back Bethany Richardson who has returned from her cultural exchange in France. I am sure Tim and Bethany will transition quickly and I know that our community will make these students and their families feel very welcome.

Visual Arts Elective Students and Students With an Interest in Visual Arts

Visual Arts Extra Subjects run after school and are a great way to develop and expand artmaking skills and understanding. Extra Subject classes employ a studio approach to artmaking with students studying under the guidance of skilled media specific artists. A studio approach to extra subject classes ensures individual guidance whilst allowing for extensive and rigorous engagement with media. Extra Subjects classes are open to all students not only Visual Arts students and include:

Monday – Ceramics – wheel throwing and hand building
Tuesday – Painting
Wednesday – Life Drawing

Student Achievements

Emma Mahon competed in the NSW Athletics Short Course State Cross Country Championships last Sunday at Dapto and was happy to place 6th in the U18 girls 3km race. She is looking forward to competing at the NSW Athletics Long Course State Cross Country Championships in Nowra in early August. We are incredibly proud of Emma and these NSW events serve as the selection trials for the NSW team to attend Nationals. 

George Murphy will be participating in training at Perisher this term as part of his commitment with NSW Institute of Sport and as part of the Australian National Moguls team. We wish George well with his training and look forward to hearing his news when he returns.

Year 10

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you all had a lovely break from the school routine and managed to spend quality time with your families.

Pastoral Care Program

This term the Yr 10 Pastoral team have much planned for the students, focusing on a number of pertinent current and relevant issues. Our Pastoral Care program will focus on mental health and wellbeing, understanding the nature of worry, positive and practical ways to manage stress, and changing self-defeating behaviour to positive thoughts and behaviour. 

In addition, we will be dedicating some time each week to help students to become ‘life ready’, by looking at skills such as writing resumes, applying for jobs, learning how to study effectively and efficiently and being prepared for Yrs 11 and 12. This week students have been asked to download a Term Planner and fill it in with details of all their assessments. They are to print it and physically stick it up in a place at home, so they and you are able to refer to it regularly. Next week they will also begin the weekly Monday process of writing a plan of action for that coming week as to how they will effectively use their time outside of school hours. The hope is that this will help them establish good study and organisational habits and technqiues this year to enable them to progress into Yr 11 positively.

Social Awareness Program

Our Social Awareness program will continue to focus on the theme for Yr 10 of homelessness having looked specifically as to how it affects women and young people, and now this term targeting aged homelessness. The plan in the latter half of this term is to establish a working group of volunteer students who will devise a plan for fundraising in Term 4 for an organisation of their choice. The working group will lead the whole Year Group in this initiative and will need to come up with creative ideas for fundraising, given the current climate of social distancing.

Due to still not having full school or Year Group gatherings, assemblies will continue to take place via Zoom and Chapel will be pre-recorded and shown to each Tutor Group via their Tutor’s laptop on Fridays.

Academic Achievement Awards

Students were recognised at the Term 3 Welcome Assembly. 

Term 2 Approaches to Learning 

Each term, Redlands measures and tracks student effort to improve intrinsic motivation for learning as well as character growth. Effort tracking aims to make student effort visible, as well as the relationship between effort and growth. It promotes the view that students of differing achievement levels can all attain growth and their full potential, by appropriate and consistent application of effort to their studies. I would like to acknowledge some key data from the Yr 9 Term 2 Approaches to Learning results:

70% of students received a Teacher Effort Score of 80 or higher
32% of students received a Teacher Effort Score of 90 or higher
13% of students received a Teacher Effort Score of 95 or higher
Aurora Golowenko, Ophelia Jackson, Marli Prado and Madeline Zheng were awarded a score of 97.
Sabrina Blasco, Lucy Horton, Jamison Houchell and Poppy Justice were awarded a score of 98.
Lucinda Baird received a score of 99 and Sarah Kumpulainen a perfect score of 100.
Congratulations to Lachlan Binnekamp, Liam Batemyr, Samantha Hely, Alex Tully and Georgia Verschoor for a notable increase in their scores from Term 1 to Term 2.

Pastoral Team Update

A warm congratulations to Ms Abigail Walker who in Term 2 announced that she is expecting a new addition to her family. Ms Walker also made the decision to step down from the role of Yr 9 Assistant Year Advisor from the end of Term 2. I would like to sincerely thank Ms Walker for her support, guidance, efforts and contributions over the years; she was integral in ensuring a calm and smooth transition for our students as they moved from Junior to Secondary School. I am also pleased to announce that Ms Eleanor Martin will be the new Yr 9 Assistant Year Advisor from the commencement of Term 3 and congratulate Ms Martin on this position. Previously the Yr 9 Tutor for McDouall Green, Ms Martin brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Ms Walker now steps into the role of Tutor for McDouall Green. 

Term 3 Pastoral Program

We often prescribe before making a proper diagnosis when communicating and should first take the time to deeply understand the problems presented to us. In Term 3, students consider the importance of  listening first and talking second; diagnosing before prescribing, and getting their facts straight before making a judgement. Goals of our program are for students to: 

  • improve communication by improving patience and humility
  • be understood and to understand others
  • be respected and respect and value others for being a unique individual.

Communication with Teachers

As students move into their final stages of school, your child will start developing more independence. These changes will start affecting the way parents communicate and connect with the school. Students should be taking more responsibility for communicating with their teachers (eg. when away from lessons, have questions about subject content etc.)

Parents can still have a relationship with the school that fits around their child’s changing social needs. One of the best ways to continue helping your child is to create a supportive environment for education at home – an environment that values education. This might involve simply talking about schoolwork together, discussing your child’s career plans and ambitions, or talking through the links between your child’s schoolwork and their future goals.

Parents on Campus

In an effort to limit the amount of people coming into the School Campus during the day, we are asking parents to not drop items off in the Secondary School Office or any office on the school grounds. Yr 9 students should be responsible for their own items and we can usually assist with any issues if students communicate with their Tutor or Year Advisors.

This Week

Welcome back to Term 3. There was an incredible buzz as students reunited after the break and met with their Tutors for their one-on-one interviews as well as planned their terms ahead individually and with their peers. Welcome back! I hope that the holiday break allowed time and relaxation with loved ones, and students are ready to embark on a new term with enthusiasm, diligence and focus.

Phillips Academy Andover eSummer – Remie Gibbs

“Over the past break, I have been participating in an online course called Express Yourself offered by Phillips Academy Andover, a top-ranked US boarding school north of Boston for Yrs 9-12.  I went through an application process and was selected to attend this course, as one of 25 students from the USA, Dubai, Jakarta, Australia and China.  This program focuses on developing our inner filmmakers, writers, performance artists and most of all, our inner creativity. We are looking at ways people can express themselves as humans and as artists. The structure of the course includes a weekly live Zoom class, a weekly 1:1 meeting with my teacher for an hour and weekly assignments, projects and class discussions.  

So far, we have completed four learning goals. These small tasks lead up to our final project of writing, acting, filming and producing our own movie. The first learning goal for Communication and Expression was a Where I’m From poem, similar to the one we wrote at the beginning of the year. The following week we looked at scriptwriting, and acting techniques. We wrote a monologue and then performed it (or alternatively videoed it). I was looking at comedy, given that I haven’t done much comedy before. This past week we worked on filming techniques and using camera angles such as close ups and master shots to convey mood. This week we’re focusing on Genre Elements of Dramatic Narrative.  

We have been using similar applications and websites to the ones we use at school, such as Canvas, Zoom and iMovie, so I have been mostly up to speed on the technology. As the work is uploaded to Canvas, due dates and daily work is scheduled, helping to keep us on track. Last week, we were peer editing via Zoom, which was a great way to connect us with people from around the world. My peer editor, Val, is from Jakarta, and I enjoyed learning from her too. My teacher is very enthusiastic and flexible, willing to help and making my experience better by working with me and applying her experience teaching creative writing, theatre and drama. The experience is great for me to extend my abilities, while also having fun and getting creative.”

We wish Remie well for the remainder of her course.

Head of Junior School

Welcome Back

It has been wonderful to welcome back our students this term and for the first time in over four months, we were permitted to gather for a short assembly on the first day of term. As I said to the students and staff present, I have really missed the opportunity for us to collectively gather as a Junior School.

On Monday, our staff returned for a rich and engaging day of Professional Learning. After an opening keynote presentation via Zoom from Dr Peter Ellerton from the University of Queensland on Critical and Creative Thinking, we explored how we know students are thinking in our classrooms, how we plan for student thinking and how we give feedback on the quality of student thinking. Following this session, the highlight for me was the involvement of over 80 Redlands staff who presented 33 different workshops to colleagues. The opportunity for academic staff to lead workshops and select others that were of interest to them was inspiring for us and truly reflected the vast depth of knowledge amongst Redlands staff.

Tuesday Clubs

We are pleased to confirm the resumption of our Tuesday Cocurricular program which can also be found in the Junior School section of Redlands Pulse. Please refer to this letter which outlines the continuation of Clubs that were stopped mid-Term 1 and also the Clubs allocated for Semester 2. Students will be reminded which Clubs that they had signed up for and new students will be able to sign up for Clubs by contacting Mrs Fairfax in the Junior School Office.

Participation in Programs with Kids Giving Back

Over the break, I was thrilled to receive an email of acknowledgment for Junior School students Feargal Lambert (Yr 3), Ruairi Lambert (Yr 5) and Zoe McKeown (Yr 5) who had participated in programs involved in Kids Giving Back, a charity whose mission is to create the next Generation of Generosity. As young volunteers, their enthusiasm and engagement in embracing the concept of making a contribution back into community shows a wonderful degree of empathy.

Student Writing Recognition

This week, I spent time listening to a piece of writing created by Yr 5 student, Caroline Brown. Caroline was one of a number of Redlands students who had submitted an entry in this year’s Whitlam Institute’s What Matters Competition and we were thrilled to hear that she has been shortlisted – a brilliant achievement in itself! Caroline will also share her piece with our students in our next assembly. 

Curriculum Camps

Further to Mr Webber’s pre-term letter, I can now confirm that our planned rescheduled camps for Yrs 3, 4 and 5 have been cancelled for 2020. Whilst students and staff will be disappointed, the decision aligns with AHPPC and the Department of Education guidelines. We will, however, be organising a day of outdoor games and activities on site for these three Year Groups later this term, which will encompass a lot of team building and initiative exercises that they would have experienced on camp, which will be led by the School’s Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Gregory.

Return to Interschool Sport and Debating

Last Friday saw our three Netball teams from Yrs 5 and 6 begin their competitive season in the Northern Suburbs Netball Association. It was great to see them compete again with two excellent wins from the three games and this weekend sees Interschool Debating, Football, Rugby and AFL resume as students and families involved will have been informed separately.

Where students have PE on this day; for this day only, they should also bring their PE kit separately and will be guided to change in the changing rooms in small numbers to ensure adequate distancing.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 

For over 30 years, International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), have taken place in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa. ICAS is an initiative of Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), a not for profit organisation owned by the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

At Redlands, it is optional for Junior School students sit these tests in Term 3. Assessments occur during class time within a supervised area of the Junior School. No particular preparation is required and all students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly, their total score as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the state/region.

For additional information and registration details, please read the letter on Redlands Pulse and any questions should be directed to the Dean of Administration, Ms Atkins. All applications close this Friday 26 July.

STEAM Week

Yr 3 students were involved in activities for STEAM week on the topic ‘How Can we Minimise the Impact of the Bushfires this Summer?’ Students discovered what the impact of bushfires were, built a creative solution and then shared their ideas to a panel of judges. The project was completed at the end of Term 2, largely using recyclable materials.

Staff Information

Due to the current situation in Melbourne, Miss Stellina Sim has not been able to return to Sydney. We will as a school and staff find an appropriate way to farewell her in the next few weeks. We wish Stellina all the best with her new job. We welcome Miss Hannah Patton into the 2 Yellow class for Weeks 1-3 and then from Week 4 onwards, Ms Amber Wilson will take over in the full time capacity on 2 Yellow. I know the Redlands community will welcome both teachers warmly.

Pick-up and Drop-off Logistics

I encourage all families to read the email sent from Sarah McGarry last week on behalf of Stephen Webber outlining the latest updates regarding COVID-19 guidelines. For our Preparatory families, it is important to know that the pick-up and drop-off logistics have not changed this term. K-2 students are to be dropped from 8.00am in the underground car park or at the front of Prep School Reception. It is very important that our Kindergarten families do not arrive before 2.30pm in the afternoon to join the car line as our Redlands House families are picking up their children at that time. You will be asked to move along if you are early. Temperature checks are still taken before school in three locations in the morning – in the car park area, Prep Reception and at the Murdoch Street gate for those who walk to school.

Prep Assemblies

I am excited this term to return to face to face Prep Assembly times on Thursday afternoons. We will endeavour to use a 15 minute window to come together and celebrate our Assembly time where key messages will be shared, and Positive Behaviour 4 Learning Awards presented. A slight change this term is that Assembly will be held fortnightly. On the alternate week, our students will have their wellbeing time together. Students who gain their Award on the alternate week will be acknowledged the following week when we are altogether.

Term 3 Clubs

Prep School will once again be offering a Clubs program for Yrs 1 and 2 in Term 3. Students who would like to attend are able to choose from a variety of options, running Wednesdays from 3.00 to 4.00pm. If you would like your child to take part in the Clubs program in Term 3, for which there is no additional cost, please refer to the letter being emailed to families on Monday. Prep will once again be using the Trybooking system to organise the registrations, which will be made on a first in, first served basis. Children are required to choose one club only for Term 3. Clubs will commence in Week 3 (Wednesday 5 August) and will finish in Week 9 (Wednesday 16 September).

Calendar Items

Term 3 calendar events are constantly under review and as decisions are made, we will communicate them to you as quickly as we can. Both Grandparents and Special Friends Day and Yr 2 Camp have been cancelled, with further details regarding Yr 2 Camp cancellation immediately below. Parent interview times are also under review at this stage. Watch this space for calendar updates.

Parent Borrowing

Our wonderful Librarian Victoria Roberts and Library Assistant Fiona Bertinshaw worked tirelessly throughout the Remote Learning period providing many books to families to ensure that our learners were provided with a wide variety of authors, information books to read and enjoy. As we have now returned to face to face teaching, it is timely to return to the guidelines around parent borrowing from our spectacular Library. The Prep Library has always encouraged multiple books to be borrowed by families and this encouragement for home reading doesn’t change. If you would like to borrow multiple books from the Library, we ask that you borrow a maximum of ten books only. These books will be provided to you in a material library bag that is to be used when returning the books please. For health and safety reasons, baskets will no longer be accepted as a way to transport the books home.

OOSH News

From 12 July charging OOSH fees returned and families are reminded that if they hold a place in the OOSH that full fees will be applicable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated OOSH and Vacation Care team. Over the past few months they have adjusted their programs and kept this invaluable service going for Redlands families.

Mrs Thomas and Ms Kennedy will make an impressive team together and I know she will quickly develop authentic and meaningful relationships with the children and parents.

Secondary Sport

COVID Protocols

As we return to competition this week spectators, parents and carers are reminded of the following conditions that are in place.

  • If any student is feeling sick or unwell they should remain at home.
  • If any student is being tested for COVID-19, they are not to attend any sport whilst awaiting results.
  • If any student has been to Victoria within the last 14 days, they are not permitted to attend sport during the quarantine period.
  • There will not be a Canteen or BBQ facilities at sport venues.
  • Spectators will not be allowed to attend any fixtures scheduled for the weekend of 25 July. Further communication regarding spectator attendance and a registration proceed will be provided in Week 2 of Term 3.
  • All students, officials and coaches will sign in upon entry at venues. If and when spectators are allowed to enter a venue, they will also be asked to sign a register. This record will be kept for 28 days from the time of the fixture.
  • All students, coaches, officials and spectators will hand sanitise upon entry.
  • There will be no shaking hands and no post match functions will be held.
  • There will only be limited access to change room and toilet facilities.
  • Allocated drop off and pick up zones will be marked out at venues where applicable.
  • Allocated spectator zones will be marked out, when and where applicable.

Please note that different sport associations, competitions or school venues may have additional or varying conditions of entry. We ask that all students and parents adhere to any directions or advice given by these parties that may be signposted or directed by attending staff.

Athletics

Athletics training will begin this Friday 24 July (Term 3, Week 1) at the Junior School Oval. This will have a focus again on Middle Distance and Sprints.

AFL

Last Sunday our Girls AFL team took the field for the very first time in Redlands Secondary School history. Competing against the Willoughby-Mosman Swans, the girls posted a fantastic win of 58-8. Strong performances across the park, with special mention to Sierra Allen, Alex Tanner and Eva Osbourne who all scored multiple times and also to Isla Wickham and Lucile Thompson, who made countless tackles and forced penalties across the day.

This weekend our boys take to the oval for their first game against Knox Grammar School.

Basketball

The Girls 1st Basketball team played in the NSWCIS Basketball Championship on Wednesday 22 July. The first game of the day was against Pymble Ladies College. A great start to the game gave the Redlands girls an early lead, however Pymble crept their way back into the game, making it a close contest for the majority of the second and third quarter. A tightly fought final quarter from Redlands saw some great teamwork, execution and smart decision-making, which resulted in a 10 point lead at the final siren, ending with a 62-52 win over PLC. The second and final game of the day was against St Luke’s and unfortunately Redlands had to play their second game without a game off in between the two games. A strong start to St Luke’s took the Redlands girls by surprise and St Luke’s had an early lead. An adjustment in the second quarter saw the Redlands girls playing more aggressively on the offensive end and smarter basketball on the defensive end, cutting the lead back to just two points. St Luke’s gained some momentum in the second half and unfortunately for Redlands, we struggled to keep up. Although St Luke’s had the upper hand in the end, it was a great effort from the Redlands girls. Redlands should be very proud of their efforts on the day.

Football

Boys

During the school holidays both our Boys and Girls Senior squads played a few trial matches in the lead up to the ISA Competition beginning this weekend (Saturday 25 July).

Our Senior Boys took on last year’s CAS Runner’s Up St Aloysius’ College. The boys were looking for a strong first hit out in what has been a long pre-season. Alos had already managed to have two pre-season matches since games were permitted to begin, following COVID restrictions. Alos controlled the midfield early and managed to convert early pressure with a goal from a corner kick after 25 minutes. Redlands began fighting back in the midfield and some strong defensive efforts allowed us to put pressure up front. This pressure turned into reward with a stunning shot from just outside the 18 yard box leading to the Redlands leveller. The second half was a war of attraction. With limited subs, Redlands began to look tired towards the end of the game. Still looking to play from the back and control the ball, they were able to continue to show improvements and apply pressure through the central channels. Unfortunately, Alos came home strong finishing the game with a number of attacking raids and managed to sneak another goal late in the match to take the trial 2-1. This was a great first match for the Senior squad.

This past weekend both Senior squads took on Sydney Grammar School. Their teams had been training together for a number of weeks and were very well drilled across both their 2nd XI and 1st XI and their ability to capitalise on pressure was slick to see, managing to take the 2nd XI 3-1 and the 1st XI match 7-0. Although the score lines were a little lopsided, this did not reflect the games. They were very tightly contested, with a number of the boys learning to adapt to the challenges faced throughout the game.  

Girls

Over the holiday period, our 1st Girls played a trial match against Monte. It was great for our girls to get a game under their belts after not having played for some time. Starting the game in great form, Redlands scored their first goal within the first 30 seconds of the game. Impressively Redlands were able to convert another goal within the next minute of play, putting them up 2-0 and surprising the Monte side. The fantastic display continued for the remainder of the first half, with Redlands maintaining possession of the ball for the majority of the half, and hit half time with a very steady 8-0 lead. Monte showed some great improvement in the second half and although our Redlands side did a great job continuing to controlling the possession, Monte disrupted a lot of the shots on goal and Redlands finished with an 11-1 win. It was a great pre-season hit out for our 1st Girls and it will be great to see what they can do with the season.

Hockey

In Round 1 this Saturday our 1st Girls will be playing against SACS in what should be a great match up for both sides. Our 2nd Girls are travelling to Central Coast Grammar School which should be a great game as the Redlands 2nd Girls have been looking very strong at training. The Junior Girls are travelling to Chevalier for a double header against Chevalier and Oxley College. It should be an exciting double header as this will be the first game representing Redlands for a number of these students. A reminder that for teams travelling by bus, parents will need to provide permission via Engage for these games. Best of luck to all of our Hockey teams in their first game of the season this Saturday 25 July.

Netball

ISA

This weekend, we see the commencement of the ISA Netball season for our Netball players in Yrs 10-12. All teams have been emailed their game time and the draw can also be viewed below.

Players in the Inter B and Inter C teams have been provided with a bus to take them to their venue on Saturday. It is strongly encouraged that players take the bus with their team to their respective games. Both buses will depart the Adams Centre (on Military Road) at 7.15am. We ask that all players arrive at 7.00am to ensure the buses can depart on time. The coach of both teams will also be travelling on the bus with their team. The buses will return students to Redlands following their game. The estimated arrival time back at Redlands for the Inter B team is 12.00pm and for Inter C team it is 1.30pm (this could vary depending on traffic).

It is important to note, that NO parents/spectators are permitted at any Round 1 Netball game. All players must be dropped at the venue and picked up after their game. Additionally, all players must have their own water bottle with them and no food is to be shared before, during or after a game. Most schools will not be offering changeroom facilities, so we ask that all players arrive at the venue dressed in their Netball uniform and ready to take the court. 

NSNA

Well done to all teams on a fantastic start to their Netball season last Saturday. It was great to see our teams back out on the court enjoying their return to Netball. A big thank you to the players and parents for following the many guidelines set out by NSNA to ensure the competition can go ahead, it is greatly appreciated.

This Saturday sees Round 2 of the competition taking place. All teams will play at the same time as last week, but please see the fixture below for the court in which your team’s game will take place. An email will be sent out on Friday informing teams of the number of spectators that can attend on Saturday. 

Please ensure all teams, both NSNA and ISA, regularly check their emails from Ms Howard as well as Redlands Pulse for the most up to date information regarding the Netball season. Any player absences (both training and games) need to be sent to Ms Howard (jhoward@redlands.nsw.edu.au) PRIOR to the game or training so that coach and supervising staff members can be informed.

Rugby

We kick off the Redlands Rugby season this weekend with internal trials between each Age Group. These games are a perfect way for our students to get their first chance at a full speed match and will be a great selection tool for the coaches. Game times as follows.

Game 1: 8.00-8.40am (5 min halftime break) – Under 13s/14s combined teams
Game 2: 8.45-9.20am (5 min halftime break) – Under 14s/15s combined teams
Game 3: 9.25-10.00am (5 min halftime break) – Under 15s/16s combined teams
Game 4: 10.05-11.00am (5 min third break) – Under 16s/Opens combined teams

Please be aware of the following guidelines for matches this weekend:

  • Students are required to bring their own water bottles for all matches.
  • Students will not have access to change room facilities and must arrive in their full Redlands Rugby uniform.
  • Students must have a mouthguard to compete in the games.
  • All coaches / students will have access hand sanitiser on the sidelines.

Lastly, due to COVID and ISA Regulations, there will be no spectators for these matches with parents and guardians required to drop off students in the Macquarie Sports car park.

Tennis

Welcome back to Tennis for Term 3. It was great to see so many of our Tennis students attend the holiday sessions put on by our Tennis providers Grand Slam Tennis. Saturday competition begins this week, Saturday 25 July. The draw is available on Redlands Pulse with the most up to date version available on the Redlands Rhino each week.

  • Please make sure you are on time. Allow extra travel time if you are travelling to a new venue. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your match is due to start, eg. the listed time is the start time of the match not to warm up.
  • On arrival, check in with the venue convenor to find out which court you will be playing on and to assist in filling in the score card.
  • Students playing in the ISA competition must wear the white Tennis polo available from the Uniform Shop along with Redlands PE/Sport shorts, appropriate shoes, Redlands cap or visor and Redlands tracksuit/fleece. Students not playing in the ISA competition may choose to wear either the Redlands white Tennis polo or their Redlands PE polo.
  • Shake/touch racquets instead of handshaking at the end of each match.

Junior Sport

Welcome back! Similar to Term 2, we will be asking students to continue to practise good hygiene at all times and to use the hand sanitisers available at school before and after sport training and matches. Students will also be reminded not to share their water bottles with team mates and to take extra precaution in those sports where the insertion and removal of mouthguards occurs regularly at breaks.

Interschool Sport competitions resume on Saturday 25 July and the specific safety requirements relevant to each Sporting Association is outlined in detail below. Similar to most club sport that has recommenced, there are restrictions in place for spectators. For any Redlands home games the following will apply:

Week 1 – Saturday 25 July: No spectators permitted.
Week 2 – Saturday 1 August onwards: only one spectator per student permitted, until further notice. 

Please note that some schools in our sporting associations (IPSHA and HICES) have made the decision not to have spectators from both their own school as well as the visiting school at their home games for the whole season. This will be communicated to Redlands by way of included information in the draw. Schools and venues will be displaying their own conditions of entry and these may change from week to week so please be patient as we navigate this return to interschool sport.

It is also worth noting that with spectator restrictions in place, this will also be accompanied by parking restrictions at both schools and external venues for Saturday sport so please be prepared to organise a pre-arranged pick up point with your child once their match has finished.

Wednesday Sport

In exciting news this week our regular Wednesday sport program recommenced this week at both external venues and on site. Please refer to this link to view your child’s Representative and Non-Representative sport for this term. A reminder that any sport specific equipment and or clothing will be required (eg., shin pads, hockey stick, tennis racquet, swimmers, mouthguard etc.)

Student Absence

For those students who are representing Redlands in fixtures each Friday or Saturday and will miss their game due to illness, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. Football

As Term 3 commences and sport resumes, we wanted to highlight some changes to our after school Football programs. 

The previously named Extra Subject 3-6 Junior Football program has received a facelift over the break to better align with the bigger picture of Redlands sport and, in particular, the Redlands K-12 Football program and pathway. Some exciting new options are being introduced for Yrs 1 and 2 and an introduction program will also be offered for Yrs 3-6 students. 

All Football on Monday afternoons from Preschool through to Yr 6 will be known as Development Football, which will take the format of either a feeder and introduction to Redlands Rep Football or as an acceleration opportunity in addition to Redlands Rep Football. Development Football runs year-round and students can sign up term by term.

Our goal is to provide:

  • A fun, safe and engaging environment for all students to develop in Football.
  • A clear development pathway within the Redlands framework.
  • More personalised coaching in smaller groups for Junior School students.
  • Opportunities to work with Redlands most experienced coaches.
  • Increased opportunities for more students to accelerate their development at all levels.

Development Football has 4 tiers:

  1. Redlands House to Kindergarten – Focus on fundamental skills and introduction to Football within a fun and friendly environment.
  2. Yrs 1 and 2 – Focus remains on fundamental skills and introduction to Football. In 2021 we intend to expand this program and offer optional match experience and games on Friday afternoons in the form of internal matches and friendlies with local schools. This will be trialled later in 2020 and, if well received, will become a more permanent fixture in 2021.
  3. New commencing Term 3 2020 – Yrs 3 to 6 Introductory Football aimed at students new to Football who aspire to join Redlands Rep teams. Focus is on development of skills and fast track exposure to Football in a nurturing environment.
  4. Replacing Yrs 3-6 Extra Subject Football – The Acceleration program is aimed at students currently playing Rep Football for Redlands who want to develop their skills further and take their Football to the next level.

Netball 

Our three Junior School Netball teams, 6A, 6B and 5A, commenced their season early with their Round 1 taking place last Friday night in the NSNA competition. Our 6B team played LCNC and, despite being a player short all game, Redlands came away with the win, 7-2. Our Yr 5 team lost to Mosman in their match and was great to see the more experienced Netball girls guiding our new players through the various aspects of the game. The final game saw our 6A team play Loreto Kirribilli and they came away with the win scoring 14 goals to their 5. Thank you to the parents who supported from the various vantage points throughout the venue. The remaining matches (times and courts) have been uploaded to our Winter Sport Draw.

Perisher will host events between Sunday 6 and Friday 11 September. All competitors and parent (volunteers) must complete a 2020 event waiver on the Redlands Booking and Payment form.

Snow Australia Interschool Event Entry

Individual event entry charges are $49pp per event. The annual Athlete Registration charge will not be charged in 2020.                                                          

All Redlands first round invitations must complete entries by Friday 24 July. Bookings are now open here. Payment and completion of the waivers confirms your child’s attendance.

The second round of invitations must contact me by Friday 24 July so I can submit an Expression of Interest for the events you are eligible for:

  1. Top 25 individual result from the 2019 Regional Championships, with competitive times/scores.
  2. Participants who received an invite into one event and request a second event eg. Alpine and Ski Cross.
  3. Previous participation in Interschools with a competitive result.

All Redlands entries must go through me as the School Coordinator. Competitors’ tickets will be available if a student has not purchased an Epic pass. Volunteer and Parent Manager passes will be available for parents.

Students are encouraged to maintain their fitness in anticipation of the Interschools Event. Dryland training and exercises are available on the Snowsports iLearn page.

Welcome to Term 3

Congratulations to all our students who took part in our holiday classes – over 150 students and 60 classes over five days.

We are very pleased to announce that all Prep, Junior and Senior Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary and Tap classes have returned to face to face classes from Week 1 Term 3.

This term we welcome Claire Wallis, our new Ballet and Dance Academy Administrator. Claire comes to Redlands with extensive administration experience and looks forward to meeting our community.

Graded and Vocational RAD Ballet Examinations

Royal Academy of Dance Ballet examinations will be held at Redlands in late August. Over 100 students will be entered at both the Graded and Vocational levels. Further information to follow.

Drama and Theatre

Gala Arts

Gala Arts will be taking place in Term 3 but in a modified format. A student meeting will be held shortly for finalists.

The event will take place using Redlands venues, with separate finals for the categories, and will be professionally filmed and edited for release in Term 4.

Although this will be different from the regular event, we hope it will nevertheless allow for a wonderful celebration of House spirit and the amazing talent in the Arts we have at Redlands, with winners being announced in Term 4.

Theatre, Dance and Multi-Disciplinary: Sunday 20 September

Extra Subject Drama and Theatre Classes

Extra Subject Drama and Theatre Classes resume on campus this week. Extra curricular teachers will resume collection or meeting of student as per the arrangements at the start of Term 1.

Parents are to collect student as per the details below and are not to enter the School buildings.

Pick Up Arrangements

Preparatory Pick Up – Prep Acting and Prep Music Theatre
Children are to be collected from class via the Prep Reception door with staggered pick up commencing from 4.20pm for Kindy classes, 4.25pm for Yr 1 and 4.30pm for Yr 2. Staff will be available to open the door and sign children out, ensuring only authorised people are collecting each student. There will be markings on the pavement outside to help ensure families are 1.5m apart. We ask that parents please collect their children and move away from the area promptly.

Junior School Pick Up – Junior Acting, Junior Film and Junior Music Theatre
All parents are asked to collect their children from the Allister Street gate including Junior Music Theatre and Junior Film students. Please be mindful and respectful that this may take a little longer than normal but is the safest option to alleviate parents needing to come on campus. We ask that parents please collect their students and move away from the area promptly.

Solo Showcase

27 and 28 July in the Drama Studio

Yr 12 IB and HSC students will be presenting their individual major works in Performance, Theatre Criticism and Design for their final examination. They will be stepping on to the stage for their solo showcase and we will invite families and friends to view footage of their major works through iLearn. We wish them all the very best as they work on these important practical components of their course.

Drama Competition

The Drama Competition will be held this term in a digital format. Students will be competing in the categories of comedy and drama with contemporary performance pieces. Further information to follow shortly about Competition entry.

Redlands News

Congratulations to Lachie Kent (Drama Captain 2015) who has recently featured in NIDA’s Ghost Lights Project. As all performance venues across the world went dark during the COVID-19 crisis, the old tradition of the ghost light was revived – leaving on a single naked bulb on a stand to ensure that an empty theatre is never left in total darkness. Some of theatre’s great characters perform iconic monologues. Untethered from their plays and plots, they have broken out. They roam the empty theatres, trying to connect once again. But being lost, they are also free… and appear in guises that might surprise as they speak their new-found truths. Lachie’s performance as Puck can be seen here, with dates and times for the full performances at 7.30pm on 6, 8 and 9 August and 11.00am on 8 and 9 August.

Welcome Back

The Music Department would like to welcome back all students and their families after what we trust has been an enjoyable and relaxing mid-year break. For all members of the Music community, we are aware that the first half of the year was challenging, with many variations to the format and delivery of our programs, and we hope that the last few weeks have provided everyone with the opportunity to refresh and recharge in readiness for a new term.

Congratulations

The Music Department would like to celebrate the achievement and success of Music teacher Mrs Amy Richardson who features in the new publication from Harvard, The Power of Making Thinking Visible: Practices to Engage and Empower all Learners. In part 2 of the book, Amy is one of the Pictures of Practice where she outlines how she used the What? So What? Now What? Thinking routine with her Yr 11 Music class. The publication has an international audience and our inclusion in the book will contribute to the reputational profile of the School at a local and international level. We are very proud of Mrs Richardson and her incredible achievement as a leading educator within our department.

Term 3 Music Program Overview

At the end of last term, the Music Department announced that the majority of Instrumental Music Ensembles will now resume across the Junior and Secondary Campuses.

All Choral programs (P-12) and Group Singing is still under review throughout Weeks 1 and 2 and will be re-assessed at the start of Term 3 following the holiday period. Please note, due to staggered lunches, that the Secondary Piano Ensemble and Chamber Music programs will not resume until further notice but the Junior Chamber program will recommence in Week 2.

  • Instrumental programs (P-12) to re-commence from Week 1 onwards (modified rehearsal arrangements based on sectionals).
  • Extra Subjects Music program (Private Music and Group Tuition) continues as per Term 2.

More detailed information outlining the specifics of weekly rehearsal arrangements and expectations surrounding student safety will be communicated by Music Administrators. For any additional enquiries or questions please contact the respective offices.

Semester 2 Music Events

It is anticipated that updated Music events will be made available on Redlands Pulse next week for parents to access. As everyone can appreciate and understand, this may be a changing schedule over the coming semester, as some of these events are subject to the NSW Health advice at the given time.

Hygiene in the Music Setting

As part of our return to group settings, this continues to be a well-considered aspect of our planning, and students involved in group instruction will follow the guidelines through the spreading out of rehearsals, utilising larger areas and rehearsal spaces to promote distancing, where possible. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of musical equipment and resources will be undertaken daily.

Semester 2 Competition Auditions

  • Vocal Competition Auditions (Term 3, Week 5)
  • Instrumental Competition Auditions (Term 3, Week 9)

The audition process for both the Vocal and Instrumental entries will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present ONE work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece WILL NOT be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist. Please note: Entries are ONLY accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.

Redlands Composition Competition

This creative opportunity is designed for any aspiring young composer in Yrs 7-12 who is currently enrolled in the either the Academic Music program, Cocurricular Music Ensembles program or Extra Subjects program. Students are encouraged to continue developing original works for submission by Friday14 August (Term 3). Application forms can be downloaded from Redlands Pulse.

Auditions for Extensions Program (Week 4)

Extension Chamber Music, Jazz Vocal Ensemble and Advanced Guitar Ensemble

With the start of new repertoire in preparation for upcoming Term 4 events, the Extension Music program has opened enrolments for students interested in joining ensembles to further extend their music skills. Selection for participation in these ensembles is dependent on participation in CORE ensembles and in meeting the requirements of the audition process. Application forms can be found on Redlands Pulse. Auditions will be held in Week 4.
