Today there was a Waste Audit at lunchtime and this evening we have a special screening for the Redlands community 2040 at the Orpheum Cinema at 6.00pm. Bookings can be made through TryBooking.
Tomorrow there will be a mufti day on the Senior Campus where students may wear green or animal themed clothing, with a with a gold coin donation (funds raised going to GCF).
Students also learnt about endangered species in the Prefect assembly on Tuesday, participated in a quiz during their Tutor Time and demonstrated their support for the environment through the Greenlands Bake Sale and raffle.
Thank you to Alice, Ben and all the other Prefects and staff involved in supporting this very worthwhile cause.

The objective is to be able to increase the diversity of our student body and provide opportunities to those who demonstrate leadership skills and a passion for learning and would otherwise not be able to experience a Redlands education.

Go Open
The last few weeks have been Go Open weeks in Secondary School. Teachers have had a coordinated approach to visiting each other’s classrooms as an opportunity for us to collaborate, share and learn from one another through opening our classrooms. It has been wonderful to hear teachers reflect on the ‘Wow’ moments they observed in each other’s classrooms on our very own iLearn Discussion. Below is just a small sample of some of the comments teachers have shared with each other:
“The teacher’s patient and caring approach in this class was amazing. Students felt as though they were able to make mistakes and all the students supported each other’s learning.”
“One of my ‘Wow’ moments was the teacher’s questioning skills which enabled each student to provide their ideas and think even deeper.”
“I was impressed with the students’ positive response to feedback and their willingness to take on board any advice. These interactions reflected a relationship of trust and respect between the teacher and students.”
In addition, around ten teachers also volunteered to “Shadow a Student” for a part of their day. The aim of this initiative was for teachers to “step in the shoes” of a student for a day, gain a better understanding of the schooling experience from a student’s perspective and have an authentic observation of student learning across various departments and classes. I had the great pleasure of shadowing Sarah in Yr 8 for half a day. Not only did I learn a lot from our double Maths and Science lessons, but I also appreciated the opportunity to sit in the playground at morning break with Sarah and her friends and hear their views of the School. Thank you, Sarah, for allowing me to step into your shoes as a learner for a day and to all of the teachers for opening up their classrooms to each other over the past few weeks.
Greenlands Week
This week the Secondary School is celebrating Greenlands Week, where we are focusing on the many and varied issues facing our environment and some of the strategies we can enact to make a difference. On Tuesday we had our Greenlands Week assembly led by our Environment Captains, Alice MacDonald and Ben Piro, where we focused on environmental issues and what we can do to make a difference both here at School and in the wider community. Today we held a waste audit at lunch to more closely examine our impact in the environment and look at how we can enact our own war on waste. Tonight we are also hosting a special screening of the film, 2040. The film explores what the world could look like by the year 2040 if we embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet. Students and families across both campuses of the school are invited to this special community screening on at 6.00pm at the Orpheum Theatre. You can book your tickets here or buy tickets at the door and all proceeds will go towards environmental initiatives at Redlands. And finally, we will be holding a mufti day tomorrow, Friday 6 September. With a gold coin donation, students may wear green or animal themed attire on the day. All proceeds will go to the Giraffe Conservation Program at Taronga Zoo.
Blackmores Running Festival: Redlands Team
The Blackmore’s Running Festival is on Sunday 15 September and Redlands is participating in it for the second year to raise awareness for mental health and all proceeds will go to one of Australia’s leading mental health supporters, Headspace. We invite students, staff and parents to walk, jog or run as part of the Redlands team: Redlands Headspace 2019. You can choose to run the marathon or the half-marathon under the Redlands team; however, most participants will be participating in the 10km Bridge Run (Group C) with an 8.00am start time. The team will meet beforehand in Bradfield Park and we encourage runners to wear pink on the day. You can register to run here or, if you are unable to run, you can still make donations to the Redlands fundraising page here. Thank you in advance for your support.

Y12 Visit to St Andrew’s College, Sydney University
Penelope Butler, Elizabeth Davies, Caitlin du Plooy, Rebecca Faurby and Zoe Kimber were treated to a tour and dinner at St Andrew’s College on Monday evening. Mr Will Cesta, the Dean of Admissions spoke to the girls about the benefits of college life versus other accommodation options as well as painting a great picture of the St Andrew’s spirit, inspired by the principles of Scottish Enlightenment. St Andrew’s also offers the largest scholarship fund of any university college at $1.5m. Redlands has students applying to St Andrews each year and Cara Skirrow, Class of 2018, is in her first year at St Andrew’s and met with the girls to give them an ‘insider’ point of view.

Debating
SDN Competition
Congratulations to the Primary A, Yr 7, Yr 8, Yr 9 and Yr 10 teams who all had wins against Stella Maris last week.
This week is our final round of the competition before the Grand Finals (unless a tie breaker is necessary next week). It is imperative that we field all teams as it could affect a team’s chances of making the final. There is a clash with the Football Dinner and we are short members of the Yr 9 and Junior team. Students in the Yr 7 and Yr 8 teams may be asked to debate up in this case.
As usual, if you are sick on Friday, please let me know first thing in the morning so that we can make alternative arrangements if needed.
Please note that this Friday is a mufti day and Debaters are reminded that they need to carry their full school uniform to debate in. We will meet in the Liggin’s Quad at 3.30pm to sign in and set up rooms.

Greenlands Week
This week we have been engaged in environmental and sustainability thinking in the Secondary School. We had a whole school assembly led by our Environment Prefects and the rest of the student leadership team. The student leaders have been selling raffle tickets and Environment Club have held a cake stall to raise funds for the The Giraffe Conservation Foundation to make a contribution towards saving the giraffe from extinction.
On Friday we will be having a mufti day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear green or animal print in return for a $2 donation. Students who have after school commitments (such as debating) are reminded to bring their uniform, and those with PE need to change into PE uniform as they would on any other day.
Yr 12 Blackmores Run for Headspace
Our Yr 12 students are organising the Redlands Team for the Blackmores Run on 15 September. Everyone is encouraged to participate and the basic run is 10km however there are shorter and longer options. Prefects will be selling support badges at the school gates in the week before the event at a cost of $2. Their goal is to match the number of runners and funds raised from last year. Cambodia Students Fundraising
Students are now in the final stages of preparations for their trip to Cambodia at the end of the year. They are finishing off their fundraising for the project work they will undertake and for the support we will be providing to our friends at M’Lop Tapang in Sihanoukville.
Fiji Team
Our students travelling to Fiji in the coming school holidays are also on their final countdown and getting excited. They have raised some funds for their community project and are looking forward to spending some time in a local community learning about the Fijian way of life and culture.
Young People’s Plan for the Planet
The Young People’s Plan for the Planet team are continuing to meet on a regular basis at lunch time and are now at the stage of turning their research into focused strategies for NSW to address each of the Sustainable Development Goals. Winter School
Last weekend students and staff headed off for a much-needed Exeat Weekend. Classes wrapped up on Thursday afternoon and after a quick visit to Jindabyne, everyone headed home for a catch up with family and friends. Thank you to all the staff who transported students to and from Cooma and Canberra, making sure they met up with their families safely.
On Monday we welcomed everyone back, ready for the final four weeks of the Program. On Tuesday we jumped straight into classes. Students in Yrs 7 and 8 enjoyed their Science lesson in which they dissected cow kidneys and a heart. Many were surprised at the size of the cow’s heart and the number of vessels it contained.
“It was surprising how many holes (vessels) there were in the cow’s heart!” Julia Murphy.
“I didn’t realise how big a cow’s heart was!” Sienna Leisk.
In Tutor Time, students explored the topic of resilience and discussed some of the highs and lows of their Winter School experience so far. With only four weeks to go, students brainstormed strategies to make the most of their remaining time here and in the evening wrote a reflective piece in their journal around what the next few weeks should look like for them.
With Spring in the air, we’re looking forward to another great week of Skiing and Snowboarding before it softens up too much.
As the final week looms closer we encourage everyone to continue to take advantage of, and immerse themselves in, all the diverse opportunities and experiences Winter School has to offer.

Prue Salter Presentation
Last Monday, Dr Prue Salter presented a study skills session titled The Year 12 Countdown to the students. The aim was to help Yr 12s to stay motivated and make full use of the remaining weeks before their final examinations. Dr Salter suggested that students should work through their returned Trial HSC or IB Mock exam papers thoroughly, complete all study notes by the end of this term and pinpoint areas of weakness and seek help. The students also received planning grids that were tailor-made for IB and HSC. Many students found it useful to plan and allocate their study time over the weeks prior and during the final exams using the guidelines Prue explained.
Parents are encouraged to review the handout from the session with students. This is often helpful for students to clarify their approach if you have them explain their study plan. Parents can also access the presentation slides and planning grid here. To access this website, please log in by using:

Yr 12 Stress Better Workshop
This Thursday, our school counsellor Ms Tanya Fullarton will run a workshop during Tutor Time, offering practical strategies and tips for students who have signed up for this event. A big thank you to Ms Fullarton for supporting students through this stressful period with your time and guidance.
Final Weeks
All students have been encouraged to make the most of the final weeks at school by working closely with their teachers and maximising their learning experiences. As parents, you can continue to encourage your son or daughter to try and maintain a healthy diet, get good sleep and take some regular exercise as this will aid in their focus. Above all, I hope the students enjoy their last weeks of school and finish on a high note knowing they have tried to do their very best.
Student Achievement
Congratulations to Grace Elliot who completed the Gold Award for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in 2019. She will attend the Gold Award Ceremony, which takes place at Town Hall on Friday 13 September. She will be presented her award by the Duke’s representative, HRH Prince Edward.
Trae Hare-Boyd recently participated in the Asia-Pacific Spartan Championships Endurance Race held in Northern China, which included six disciplines, ranging from the five kilometre sprint to the 21 kilometre endurance race up and down a ski mountain with 30 obstacles to accomplish. Of over 250 racers, Trae came in at first in his age group of 18-25. What a fantastic result and he should be congratulated on giving his absolute all in this competition.

Interesting Article of the Week
This week I have chosen an article that the students are also reading during Tutor Time, on the benefits of getting a casual job as a teenager. The article lists six benefits for teenagers: earning money, learning new skills, gaining work experience, learning more about what kind of career you want, meeting new people and gaining independence. Having two children of my own who have worked their way through High School, and one who is about to start a job, the benefit for us parents also is reducing our expenses by not needing to pay pocket money anymore.
Athletics Student Achievements
Redlands Track and Field had their second ISA/CAS/GPS Invitational Carnival this week at E.S Marks, Randwick. There was a great turnout by the entire team and congratulations go to the following Yr 9 students for their strong participation: Ruby Kelly, Shaun Patrick and Lauren Smith. Best of luck to all students for the ISA Carnival next Tuesday.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.
TEDx Talk Opportunity
In our assembly on Monday, we were delighted to welcome Junior School parent, Kat Collins, who presented a unique and exciting opportunity to our Junior School students.
In her role as a speaker coach, Kat has been fortunate enough to work with various TEDx events over the years. At the moment she is currently helping with one that will take place in February 2020 called TEDxBlighStreet. Kat and her team are currently curating the speaker list and with the theme of Interconnection, they thought it would be excellent to be able to involve the younger generation in some way.
Whilst not having to present a full TED talk, our Junior School students have been asked to consider submitting a one minute video which will be interspersed between the speakers under the theme of Interconnection.
The opportunity has already sparked a lot of excited conversation amongst the students and the key information for students and parents is below for your reference. At least one Redlands Junior School video will be showcased at this event, which is very exciting for the School and more importantly, the students.
Key Information
- One minute video.
- Theme of ‘interconnection’.
- Students can produce individually, as a pair, small group or as a class.
- Submissions are due no later than 4.00pm on Friday 25 October (Week 2, Term 4) on a USB to Junior School Reception (this allows for holiday time thinking and creating).
- A panel of our teachers will shortlist ten videos which will then be sent to Kat Collins and her team at TEDx to select from.
STEAM ‘Big Day In’
Last Friday, we were thrilled to again host the STEAM ‘Big Day In’ for the third successive year in partnership with, and supported by, the Australian Computer Society Foundation. An event for Stage 3 students (Yrs 5 and 6), all of our Redlands students in Yrs 5 and 6 were highly engaged in a range of fantastic experiential learning opportunities with various STEAM industry organisations in hands-on workshops throughout the day. We were also delighted to invite and welcome visiting students and teachers from Manly Village Public School, Neutral Bay Public School, Riverview, Sacred Heart and St Aloysius, who also enjoyed the learning opportunities this exciting day afforded.
Some of the activities that students were engaged with included coding with drones, LEGO Mindstorm challenges, computer science activities, App design, computational thinking without technology, engineering tasks, augmented reality, brain activity using an EEG and game design.
In seeing the range of activities first-hand and talking with many of the students, one particular activity led by Solar Buddy and sponsored by WiseTech, left a lasting impression on a number of students as they assembled solar-powered lights in this session by way of building a simple solution for communities suffering from the effects of energy poverty. Students learnt about the notion of energy poverty, watching a video presentation and then once they had built their light, they wrote some heartfelt and meaningful letters to students who will shortly receive these lights in Papua New Guinea.
On behalf of the students, I am indebted to our eLearning Coordinator, Mrs Winrow, for her leadership of this memorable day. In turn, I know she will also join me in acknowledging the outstanding support of our Redlands ICT Team, who were on hand to assist and support students, teachers and presenters throughout the day. We have already been asked to host this event again next year which we have enthusiastically accepted to do.
Father’s Day Breakfast
Despite the heavy rainfall last Friday morning, we were delighted to welcome over 300 parents for our Father’s Day Breakfast. Our Plan B location of Dunnet Hall was perfect and with some wonderful musical accompaniment from Mr Damon Wade and some of our Secondary students, alongside a scrumptious menu put together by our wonderful Junior Canteen team, the breakfast was a delightful way to start both the day and the weekend for our special guests.
Maths Cup
Yesterday, nine students from Yr 6 participated in the annual Maths Cup held at Amity College. This is the tenth year of this competition designed for Yr 6 students and as the inaugural winners, Redlands has always enjoyed competing at this ever-increasing academic competition. This year, there were 100 teams from 42 schools competing in teams of three, and participating in a variety of mathematically-minded activities ranging from hands-on team events to individual Maths papers. Two of our teams consisting of JJ Black, Piper Bradley, Jesse Forrest, Tabitha Galvin, Nathan Lu and Hugo Ward made it into the top 12 and competed in the semi-finals. Our third team of Thomas Dewar, Kiana Gapaillard and Mrs Ling Liam Petersen cheered them on from the audience and although neither of the Redlands teams made it into the final, the students enjoyed a fabulous day of mathematical thinking, collaboration and challenge. My thanks are extended to Mrs Ling for looking after the group who all had a great day and to the group of students who took part in every event with real enthusiasm and were great ambassadors for Redlands.
Yr 6 Netball Grand Final
Good luck to our Yr 6A Netball Team who take on Roseville in this Saturday morning’s Grand Final. The team have had an exceptional season and are hoping to add to the silverware they won to become HICES Champions earlier this year. I am looking forward to joining other teachers in cheering them on at 8am at Willoughby Leisure Centre, should other families be able to also be able to attend and support the girls.
National eSmart Week
This week is National eSmart Week, an important opportunity for our school community to reinforce our commitment to cyber safety and promote the smart, safe and responsible use of digital technologies. During Monday’s Junior School assembly, Dean of Students, Mrs Kourakis, reminded students of these values and shared this short video produced by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner promoting cyber safety and online wellbeing. Parents are also encouraged to view this short video and engage in conversation with your child, if you feel appropriate.
For further tips and advice on helping your child have safe online experiences the eSafety Commissioner website has a wealth of information for parents and carers.
Yr 5 Leadership Day
As part of an ongoing program of student leadership development and awareness for our Yr 5 students, the students were again engaged, challenged and inspired in a morning of leadership-focused learning and practical activities by external facilitator, Cameron Brown, from Explore, Discover, Act. Part of this deliberate focus with Yr 5 is to help them prepare and think about the student leadership opportunities that comes with them moving up into Yr 6 next year as a cohort. In talking to the Yr 5 teachers, I know that this group is already demonstrating some wonderful qualities of collaborative and collective leadership which augurs well for this group.
Bake Sale for Operation Christmas Child – Monday 9 September
At recess next Monday, Year 4 student, Alexis Mar, will be joined by friends in organising a bake sale to raise money for Operation Christmas Child which she presented in assembly and has been communicated in Note Day.
Kids’ Cancer Project Fundraiser – Friday 13 September
In our assembly this week, students were also informed of our fundraising for the Kids’ Cancer Project Fundraiser next Friday 13 September. Yr 5 student, Stella Cunningham, shared the opportunity for students to purchase handballs ($2), ribbons ($2) or wristbands ($1) in aid of this poignant charity for both Stella and our School community. Students are also encouraged to bring a gold coin for any additional donations for this charity.
Sleep for Improved Health, Resilience and Academic Performance
The importance of a good night’s sleep is well established; however, over 30% of primary school children and 70% of teenagers are sleep deprived. This has significant consequences on many areas of their lives including learning and academic performance, as well as emotional and mental health.
You are invited to attend a parent workshop with Lisa Maltman, Director of The Sleep Connection. The aim of the evening is to share knowledge, practical strategies and tools to support sleep health. Ms Maltman recently addressed our Secondary School parents and was well received. This workshop will focus on building good sleep habits in our Preparatory and Junior School age groups. Parents will be given a questionnaire which will become a resource to support and guide family conversations at home.
The workshop will take place in the Arnold Library, Junior School, on Wednesday 18 September from 4.30pm-6.00pm. Please click here to register your attendance.
This workshop is provided by Redlands to support our focus on student wellbeing. If you would like to know more about the presentation, or have any questions, please do feel welcome to contact our Dean of Students, Mrs Samantha Kourakis.

Happy Father’s Day
The wet weather didn’t dampen the lovely spirit of Father’s Day morning last Friday on the Junior Campus. After some delicious treats for breakfast, fathers accompanied their children into the classrooms for some collaborative learning time. Yr 2 created an “iDad” where they brainstormed some qualities that best-described their fathers. Yr 1 enjoyed some rotational activities where dads were spoilt with music and massages, read books together, constructed board games and had portraits sketched of one another. Some Kindergarten classes made paper airplanes and colourful ties which the dads promised to wear for the whole day. Thank you to the Junior Canteen, the Facilities team, Secondary students for the musical entertainment and Yr 6 students who assisted with the handing out of tasty treats.
Author Visit
On Monday 2 September the Preparatory School students welcomed Frances Watts, who is the author of a large number of children’s books. She has written numerous picture books, novels for Upper Primary as well as for an older audience. She spoke to all of the Kindergarten, Yr 1 and Yr 2 students about what it means to be an author and what her work life involves. Frances was especially good at encouraging them to think about where to get ideas from for their own writing and what to do once they had the ideas. She read from her books, explained how she works with the illustrators and editors and enthused about the ‘wonders of words’. The students were highly engaged, extremely courteous and asked well-considered questions. As she left, Frances commented upon how much she had enjoyed her visit. We certainly enjoyed hosting her and we look forward to welcoming her back to Redlands. Thank you to Mrs Roberts, our Teacher Librarian, who consistently and thoughtfully selects authors who inspire and generate excitement about Literacy.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Father’s Day
It was wonderful to see so many Fathers and Grandfathers at Redlands House last Friday. The children were very excited to show off their preschool and have their dads join in activities with them. It was lovely to see parents sitting with their children during music lessons, painting, building and exploring the classroom. Occasions such as this, provide important links between home and preschool. Children thrive when families and educators work together in partnership to support their learning.
Optional Term 4 Uniform for Transition Gold Students
To assist in the preparation for Kindergarten, Transition Gold students who are moving into Kindergarten in 2020, are welcome to wear the formal school uniform in Term 4 should they wish. Please contact the Redlands Uniform Shop for a full list of uniform requirements and to make an appointment before the end of Term 3.
Spring has Sprung!
We are very much enjoying the warmer weather at Redlands House. The children have been busy in the garden and delighting in water play again. Please remember to layer the children’s clothing as it can still be cool in the mornings and afternoon. An extra set of clothing, including socks is required every day as sometimes their uniform can become wet or dirty. Any donations of socks, for us to have as spares, would be greatly appreciated.

Secondary Sport
redlands Rhino – Weekly Fixtures
Please note: Redlands Rhino has the most up-to-date weekly fixtures. This is uploaded every Tuesday afternoon at 4.00pm. Please ensure you check this with regards to game times, venues and oppositions.
Well-being and Sport
Throughout the registration process for summer sport we asked our students the question “How important do you think sport is to your well-being?”
The results indicate that over 88% of Secondary School students rank sport as a very important contributor to their well-being. The value that sport brings to an individual’s well-being is often misunderstood or underrated. Often we can link our status of well-being directly to our reduction of stress. Meaning that low stress equals high wellbeing, or vice versa. However, our level of well-being can often be attributed to how well we cope with or manage our stress levels. Sport by its very nature places individuals and groups in stressful moments. Physical stress, emotional stress and mental stress are all part of the games we compete in. These types of stress are not necessarily bad. Stress has gained a fairly poor reputation as a provocateur of poor mental health or having a negative effect on ones well-being, when in fact stress and training the body to cope with stress can increase our well-being. Sport forces you to apply yourself fully to a task at hand, letting go of other concerns outside of that specific moment. Martin Seligman refers to this as a “state of flow”. This can stimulate the release of endorphins, increasing our mood and potentially our outlook on life while reducing our levels of cortisol (stress hormone) in the body. It is in this regard that sport is a vital contributor to positive well-being, as reflected by our own students in the survey. It is always important to remember the benefit of participating in sport will always outweigh the benefit of not participating in sport, no matter age, gender or cultural differences.

There was a great turn out last Saturday at ES Marks for the second Invitational Carnival of the season, with a number of Redlands students out there competing for spots for the upcoming ISA Carnival. Daniel Benoleil, Lachie Carmichael and Joel Daily will lead our team having huge programs after qualifying for multiple events. Daniel Benoleil and Chloe Scamps will represent in Long Jump, Claude Gatehouse and Sofia Vincent in Shot Put, Mischa Fabig, Byron Mills and Annalyse Rowe for High Jump.
Our Boys Relay Teams will also represent HICES and if they perform anything like last week will have a great chance. The Junior Boys Relay Team of Jeffrey Benoleil, Daniel Benoleil, Ash Corn and Joel Daily will look to beat their record breaking time at the next level. Lachie Carmichael, Charles Hargrave, Landon Mansell and Rory McMillan will look to repeat their 56 seconds performance and another stellar run will hold them in good stead for a podium finish.
Netball
My apologies to Redlands 13 who I last week mentioned as having had a season that just snuck them into the Finals. Redlands 13 are of course our Yr 6 A Team, who were not only HICES Netball Champions, but won last weeks Semi Final convincingly and now face-off in the Grand Final this Saturday. The girls were given a real pump up, playing an exhibition match before our Winter Sports Rep Teams and Mr Hemopo in the Gym this week. They look primed for a big game in the decider. Good luck to all the girls.
IPSHA Gymnastics
Our After School Gymnastics Club has entered into the IPSHA Gymnastics Carnival in Term 4 and are looking for any club level 3 or above gymnasts who are keen to represent Redlands at this Carnival. Redlands Composition Competition
Earlier this year, the Music Department announced the second instalment of the Redlands Music Composition Competition, in recognising the creative talents of students who compose their own music. This creative opportunity was designed for any aspiring young composer in Yrs 7-12 who is currently enrolled in the either the Academic Music Program, Co-Curricular Music Ensembles Program or Extra Subjects Program. Instrumental Competition Auditions (Week 10)
Please note: Entries are only accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.
The audition process will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present one work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece will not be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist.
