Issue 9 2024 Term 1 Week 9 - 28 Mar 2024

From the Principal

This week I have enjoyed joining with students, staff and parents in celebrating Easter across the School in many different ways: Secondary, Junior and Prep School Easter Services; our Redlands Community Easter Service and Reflection on Wednesday morning; and even a visit from the Easter Bunny at the Prep School this morning!

There are many different messages we can take from the Easter story such as the humility and servant leadership of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet on the night of the Last Supper or the sacrifice of his crucifixion on the cross on Good Friday. However, the message that resonates the most with me is one of hope from his resurrection on Easter Sunday – a hope for all of us both in life and death.

Growing up in the United States, Easter was synonymous with spring, a season of hope and rebirth after the doldrums of winter. For me, it also signalled the start of the baseball season, and as a diehard, passionate Baltimore Orioles fan, it also brought a renewed sense of hope and possibility for the season ahead, even if most seasons ended in disappointment.

Hope is powerful emotion which can both inspire us and give us tremendous joy, but can also lead to heartbreak. Despite the vulnerability and occasional disappointment that hope can lead to, I believe a life lived with hope is far better than one without.

The former President of Yale University, Bart Giamatti, wrote an essay about spring, baseball and hope entitled, “The Green Fields of the Mind”, which I always read this time of year to remind me of the power of hope and the possibility of the baseball season ahead.

He writes, “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops….”

“Of course, there are those who learn after the first few times or who were born with the wisdom to know that nothing lasts. I am a simpler creature, tied to more primitive patterns and cycles. I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun.”

I wish all of you a restful, joyous and hopeful Easter season.

Congratulations and bravo to all of the cast and crew, students and staff involved in the outstanding production of the Secondary School Musical, Legally Blonde, last week. While every year I marvel at the talent on stage at our Secondary School musical, in many ways I am even more impressed that so many of the invisible roles that make our Musicals such a success – the orchestra, production crew or hair and makeup crew – are comprised of our students.

As we come to the conclusion of the summer season of sport, I would like to make a special mention of some outstanding results at the Australian National Rowing Championships last week, specifically, Angus McInnes and Tom Hooper who won a bronze medal in the Under 17 Boys Double and Angus McInnes, Tom Hooper, Connor Morrison, Oscar Pearce and Henry Preece who won a bronze medal in the Under 17 Boys Quad. Congratulations!

Community Update

Late last week, like many, I had the pleasure of attending Legally Blonde … and it was spectacular! It was truly impressive to see how the buzz around campus from all the students, staff and parents involved in the lead up transformed into a sophisticated and professional program of performance and production. Thank you and well done to all involved on this uplifting and entertaining event for our School community.

With the Easter break before us I have been reflecting on our School motto, ‘Let your light shine’, a phrase taken from The Sermon on the Mount, ‘Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven’ (Matthew 5:16 NIV). At Redlands we aim to provide extensive opportunities to enable each student’s light to shine while fostering the light in those around them, and those who need support.

‘Let your light shine’ is an ethos we carry in all our endeavours and I remain grateful for the guidance and support that our community of staff, students, parents, carers and alumni so generously continue to provide.

Enjoy the Easter break.

The Musical – Celebrating a 140 Year Tradition

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in this year’s Musical Legally Blonde.  As part of Redlands 140th anniversary, we were looking back over landmarks in this special school tradition. The first ever drama and music co-production was held in December 1884 at the School’s first Speech Night. Throughout the 1890s, people from around the city flocked to see the student productions and after the school moved to Redlands in 1899, students reported that was ‘a concert or recital every night’ in the ballroom of the grand house that once stood on campus.

From Gilbert and Sullivan to Shrek, Redlands has staged a wide variety of musicals throughout the years with the opening of the Hall in 1966 providing Redlands with its first full sized venue. Particular credit goes to those Redlanders who pioneered the School’s orchestra in 1972 and soon afterwards, the first jazz band, essential to the annual musical. Also an acknowledgement to those involved in the success of the first fully coed musical Bye Bye Birdie, in 1982 ensuring that Redlands no longer needed to ‘borrow’ boys from other schools!

The Musical remains one of Redlands most highly anticipated events on the School calendar and a vital memory to all who have been involved over the years.

Thank you to Marguerite Gillezeau, Redlands Archivist, for sharing this wonderful history with our Community.

Happy Easter

Redlands Parents and Friends

Easter means many different things to families. But above all else; it is a time of hope, renewal and new life. This long weekend is a welcome moment to pause from an often hectic start to the school year, and a time to reset for the change in season. We have had so many well supported community events and activities since school commenced and it is wonderful to see the new friendships and momentum of connection in our community. Enjoy a restful break and we look forward to more fun after the chocolate Easter rush!

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

  • Wed 3 April we will be discussing The God of No Good by Sita Walker as an evening session. Stay tuned here for the location.
  • For our May meeting we will be reading a debut crime-thriller by local author, Lynne Johnson, The Bait Trap.

Behind the Scenes with RPFA: Meet your RPFA Committee

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) is a group of committed parents who support the broad activities of the school’s diverse community. The RPFA is your first point of contact for Redlands community events or support. Check back here each week to meet 2024 committee members and be inspired for how you can get involved.

Name: JP Forrest

Role: One of 5 Yr 7 parent reps, 2nd hand uniform co-coordinator (and previous RPFA President 2022-2023:)
Kiddos: Jenna (Yr 7), James (Yr 9), Jesse (Yr 11), Jack (Class of 2023)

If you could choose a RPFA theme song (or superhero) what would be the title / name?

Be the Change by Britt Nicole. It’s upbeat and has a great message, plus the light imagery eg “We can make this world bright / Turn on all the lights” which ties in to the school motto.

Why did you decide to join the RPFA, and what do you love most about it?

We had only just landed in Sydney mid-2019 when I was recruited into the vacant role of VP of the RPFA straight away, having kids in all three sections of school and having had years of experience as class parent, parent group coordinator and even scout leader in the US and Singapore. It was a great way to meet people and get involved with school – to help out, but also to show my kids how much I value Redlands and the importance of giving back. I’ve also made a lot of awesome friends in the process.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the school?

Do it! There are so many different ways to get involved and varying levels of commitment. You get a better understanding of how things work, and input into how to make things better, and you get to meet so many amazing people!

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

Nah, been there done that! I love that they are learning in a supportive yet challenging environment with a diverse group of great friends and they have the opportunity to get involved in so many different activities, in a beautiful setting. I hope they can appreciate that.

The Week in Pictures

Thank you to all the Class Parents for arranging these wonderful events for us!

Reflection and Renewal

Although it has been a short week, it’s been a reflective one in the Secondary School. Commencing the week with three short Easter reflections, the students were provided with the space to consider and reflect on the importance of Easter. Jonnie Wintle, a youth minister from Seaforth Anglican Church, reminded us of the spiritual significance of Easter via an engaging and thought-provoking presentation.

National Young Leaders Day

On Tuesday, Redlands students, including our exceptional SRC representatives and some talented Year 11 students, participated in the dynamic 2024 Halogen National Young Leaders Day held at the ICC. Students engaged with a lineup of speakers including Bryson Klein, the Hon. Rose Jackson, Anastasia Woolmer and Paul Gallen, gaining valuable insights and inspiration for their leadership journey

The North Sydney Council Voice of Youth Workshop

On Monday, Eleanor O’Sullivan, Heidi de Saxe, Jake Nochar and Max Taylor from Year 10 attended a Youth Workshop hosted by the Mayor of North Sydney Council. Working with peers from other schools in the local areas, the students were tasked with providing their voices, ideas, and insights into community life to help shape council policy for the future of the local community.

Volleyball Schools Cup

Year 12 students River Stefanovic and Freddie Yates took advantage of a wonderful opportunity to travel to the Gold Coast to play in the Beach Volleyball Schools Cup last week, competing against student volleyball players from around Australia. After making it out of the group stage, their first opponents were in the Top 3 at Nationals and swiftly knocked them out of the finals. However, they still had a lot of fun and were appreciative of the opportunity to play against some of the best in their age group.

Students, parents and community members have enjoyed the various end of sport season dinners which have been taking place over the past week. I had the privilege of attending the inaugural Touch Football dinner last night and presenting awards with the Assistant Head of Sport, Mr Graham Nes. A huge thank you to all our Directors of Sport for their commitment and energy this summer season.

The Cross Country Carnival went well today and all students completed the 3km course, finishing with a delicious BBQ in perfect conditions!

Long Weekend Message

This morning, we met as a cohort to reiterate a few key messages for Yr 12 …

We are so PROUD of them as a cohort. They are consistently being recognised by teachers as “hard workers” and “starting this year STRONG.”

We will always have areas for improvement and we do need to “be better” and “step up further” in some areas as that is part of life.

This weekend, they are encouraged to take time to rest, be present with family and prepare for these last two weeks of term.

Parents and carers, thank you for your ongoing communication, time, patience, feedback, celebrations and support. Wishing you and your families a restful and rejuvenating Easter long weekend.

Legally Blonde“Omigod you guys” What a show!

Last week, Redlands students took to the stage with an impressive presentation of Legally Blonde, the musical. This high energy musical left the crowd speechless, dancing in their chairs and singing all weekend long. The months of preparation leading up to three solid performances were intense and students described it as “super fun,” “stressful,” and “time with friends.” Each character was cast perfectly, the lighting and sound drew you further into the show and the staging, makeup, hair and costumes added to this impressive performance.

We also had our very own Yr 12 Assistant Year Advisor, Katharine Boase, as producer, choreographer and designer for Legally Blonde. She has many talents and it was an even more meaningful experience for her to join the Yr 12 students in their last musical of their Secondary School career. Congratulations to all cast and crew.

Halogen National Leadership Day

Run by Halogen, a handful of Yr 11 students (Jaiden Murphy, Edward Cheung, Freya Kittle, Madison Noes, Hiro Phillips, and Millie Winton) engaged with an opportunity to attend the National Youth Leaders Day.

From Hallogen:

‘We have been asking leaders this question for some time now. How we lead ourselves and others in any kind of situation reveals a large part of who we are as people. Who our leaders are as people (whether they be prime ministers, parents, or prefects), determines the size and shape of the home, school, country, and world we live in.

The Halogen Australia exists to inspire & influence a generation of young people to lead themselves and others well.

The National Young Leaders Day is a unique opportunity to expose young people to real-life stories of leaders in a variety of fields – and celebrates 20 years of halogen inspiration and insight.’

This event was designed to benefit any student interested in developing their leadership potential for personal and leadership growth.

Students had to consider the following:

  • What leadership means to you?
  • Your strengths and areas for growth in leadership
  • The impact you hope to make through leadership, both personally and in the community
  • How you can use your background, perspective, and talents to contribute effectively to a leadership role
  • Challenges you anticipate encountering as a leader.

A reflection from Madison Noes:

This was an exciting event where we could mingle with students from various schools who travelled from all over NSW. We had the privilege of hearing from four different guest speakers who all had their own unique and exceptional set of skills and experience that moulded them into the leaders they are today.

The ICC auditorium encased an exciting atmosphere fuelled by student leaders and students who were keen to learn more about what it truly meant to be a leader.

The MC and host of the day, Andy, never failed to entertain, guiding us through engaging activities in between and throughout the speeches of the guest speakers.

The first leader we heard from was Anastasia Woolmer, Australian memory champion and Survivor TV series contestant who shared her journey from feeling average to excelling through persistence and hard work. Her story underscores the value of resilience and finding one’s own path to success. Next, we heard from The Honourable Rose Jackson MLC, NSW Minister for Youth who advocates using platforms like TikTok to empower younger generations, emphasising individual action and the importance of finding one’s voice in shaping the future. In the last session of the day, we heard from Paul Gallen, Rugby League Superstar, who emphasised the importance of hard work and perseverance in overcoming setbacks, reminding us that success comes from dedication and seizing opportunities. Finishing with Bryson Klein, Ninja Warrior veteran who inspired with his insights on conquering fear and embracing failure as essential steps toward success. His message resonates with the power of resilience, perseverance, and the courage to step outside one’s comfort zone.

Along with hearing from the inspirational speakers, we got to spend our lunch and recess breaks around Darling Harbour, enjoying the beautiful weather and delightful views of Sydney city.

Overall, I had an amazing experience attending National Youth Leadership Day and I learnt so much from listening and reflecting on several perspectives and ways in which one can be a leader in their own niche.

A reflection from Freya Kittle:

My favourite speaker was Bryson Klein who helped Australia win gold in the International Ninja Warrior Championships. Bryson described how he overcame various physical and mental barriers to achieve his goal and reminded us that courage is not the absence of fear. One idea that particularly sat with me was when Bryson told us the ‘Master has failed more times than the novice has ever tried’. The day was a great opportunity to connect with other aspiring leaders at Redlands as well as leaders from other schools.

Year 10

Musical Congratulations – Legally Blonde

Congratulations to the entire cast and crew who worked so hard to make the production of Legally Blonde an incredible success. What a performance! Your passion and commitment was evident in every aspect of performance, from the energetic choreography to the soaring vocals and strategic set changes. It takes a huge team to put together such a professional performance and everyone involved should be enormously proud of their efforts. A special congratulations goes to the Yr 10 students who were involved this year, and especially to Lexie Jones who so convincingly performed the principal role of Vivienne. I encourage Yr 10 students to look to be involved in the Musical for 2025, to step out of their comfort zone and join the Redlands Musical family in this wonderful opportunity.

Cross Country Carnival

Today a number of Yr 10 students chose to run in the Cross Country Carnival. Beyond the obvious boost to physical fitness through extensive running, this event ignites a sense of teamwork and house spirit among participants and really pushes students beyond their limits. Well done on these students for showing grit and resilience as they faced the challenges of the track in rainy conditions:

Yr 10 Fundraising Initiative: Raise Foundation

Well done to our enterprising Year 10 students who turned an idea pitched in Year 9 Commerce last year into a multi-campus fundraiser at Redlands on Monday.

As part of their Commerce studies, Year 9 students at Redlands engaged in a term long intrapreneurship program. This saw them work in small teams to quickly upskill around several different partner organisations and then apply human-centred design methodology to solve a given problem.

One partner organisation was youth mentoring foundation, Raise, which provides in school mentorship to 13–15-year-old students around Australia. These young people are grappling with issues like anxiety, depression, loneliness and bullying and they are the age group least likely to ask for help. With Raise, young people have access to a trained and trusted adult who supports them over a period of time. The mentor effectively fills that young person’s backpack with go to skills and strategies they’ll continue to use. Raise knows their program works but they need to ensure they maintain a stream of funding to continue to provide mentorship.

This is where Redlands students stepped in! The problem Raise gave student teams was how might they activate an innovative fundraising campaign in school communities that is appealing to young people and their families. The teams spent time with Founder and CEO, Vicki Condon AM learning about the organisation. They had the opportunity to interview her about what had been tried before, what programs cost to run and where she saw the biggest opportunities. They were then guided through the human centred design process by their classroom teachers, this involved interviews with students, teachers and families around what kinds of fundraisers they had participated in before, whether they regularly donate and if so how, as well as confronting ‘giving fatigue’. Armed with insights, the teams set to work ideating different possibilities. The teams received asynchronous feedback from Vicki and her team at Raise about which idea each team should pursue and continue to refine. The final step was a celebration of learning event where we invited all our partner organisations back onsite at Redlands to enjoy lunch with the Year 9 cohort and hear their pitches.

The team that was selected by Raise Foundation had the clever tagline ‘Raise Dough: Bake a Difference’ sitting atop their fundraising strategy which was an immediate hit with Vicki and her colleagues. With the School’s blessing they have taken our students ideas into the real world and trialled them with their corporate partners. We are delighted that learning in the classroom has the potential to find life in the world beyond, particularly when it is making a real and lasting impact in the lives of other young people.

Our enterprising team of students successfully launched the first pilot within schools, their own ‘Raise Dough: Bake a Difference’ initiative on Monday 25 March, just in time for the Easter long weekend! Well done to Kira Delaney, Isobel Campbell, Sofia Whatmough, Jessica McKeown, Alannah Winder and Lucinda Maher who raised over $3,000. A special thank you also goes to Ms Elizabeth Green who worked closely alongside the students to facilitate this wonderful opportunity.

Easter

As Easter is upon us, I encourage Yr 10 to reflect on the immense growth that they have had this term, and to look forward to the last few weeks of the term rested and ready to tackle their remaining assessments and school commitments. Our Easter Assembly on Tuesday was a wonderful reminder of the special connections and reflections that Easter calls us to draw upon, whether this be spending time with family, going on an exciting Easter egg hunt or visiting friends. A special thank you to Marlon Giacco who performed a moving Cello piece for students to spend time considering what Easter means to them. Wishing you all a Happy Easter!

Year 9

Happy Easter

The energy on campus today reflected Year 9’s excitement about the long weekend ahead. The cohort has approached the new school year with enthusiasm and commitment, and we hope both students and families enjoy the well-deserved mini-break.

While due dates of assessments are certainly approaching quickly, we hope that the extended weekend also provides the opportunity to catch up with friends and recharge before the final two weeks of the term. Happy Easter!

Tutor Today

Over the past few weeks in Tutor Time, we have been exploring the VIA Institute’s Character Strengths. Last week, Year 9 students ranked which strengths they felt were most important to them with many groups highlighting the value of leadership and kindness. This week, we began our tutor session with students guessing which strengths belonged to each teacher. The stakes were high, with Easter Eggs on the table for the winners and needless to say, this inspired some eager participation.

Students then took the VIA Character Strengths Survey themselves to discover their individual strengths. The cohort’s collective responses revealed that while there is diversity within our strengths, love and humour stood out as characteristics that many of us share. Interestingly, this aligns strongly with the strengths that the cohort self-identified in our Year Meeting last week.

Subject Focus – Commerce

Last Friday, six Year 9 students attended a highly collaborative and experiential day of entrepreneurial learning and confidence building at the Macquarie University Incubator. These six students were invited to attend due to their strong performance in the Year 8 STEAM Days last year as the event provided another opportunity to connect the kind of structured innovation experienced throughout the STEAM Days with the possibility of taking an idea further.

The day had crucial skills at its heart—empathy, interviews, problem statements, ideation, MVP, prototyping—and by day’s end, they pitched a ‘disposable’ idea with aplomb. Redlands students collaborated with peers from across Sydney, an invaluable insight into the importance of diverse teams. They also worked within the award winning MQ Incubator and gained understanding of the opportunity’s universities are now provided to combine tertiary study with support for fledgling enterprises.

We look forward to more structured opportunities for the entire Year 9 cohort to flex their entrepreneurial muscles as the year unfolds.

Youth Voice to Parliament

Yesterday, a few Year 9 students participated in a discussion facilitated by three of our Year 12 IB students. Students were given the opportunity to share their opinions about Youth Mental Health, which was previously identified as an area of importance for Redlands Secondary School students. Key takeaways from this discussion will influence a report directed to North Sydney MP, Kylea Tink in the hopes that she can take these findings to Parliament, influencing positive change for future generations. Here is what two Year 9 students had to say about the experience:

Zaira McHutchison – “Yesterday I attended the Youth Voice to Parliament Meeting with many other people from different Year Groups. It was very interesting to hear everyone’s perspective on our agreed topic: mental health. We discussed how Redlands could improve the negative stigma around mental health problems and how the School could make support systems more available to everyone. We also discussed social media’s influence on how we think about mental health and how hearing people our age going through the same situations as us would help validate our concerns and help us find ways to improve our mental wellbeing that works for us. Overall it was a very insightful experience!”

Hugo Burton – “We discussed youth mental health in our school and community. We talked in small groups, responding to given questions. I enjoyed hearing everyone’s different perspectives and sharing my own. I hope some of our ideas, like promoting awareness about the school counsellor, reducing the stigma around mental health and advocating for mental wellness on social media, can be put into action. I enjoyed the meeting and am curious to see what happens next.”

Year 8

The Musical – ‘Omigod, omigod you Guys!’

‘Omigod you guys’, it has been an exciting week in the lead-up to a well-earned Easter Long Weekend. Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday the Secondary School put on a spectacular production of Legally Blonde. If you, like me, were fortunate enough to see the show you would know it was funny, uplifting, thoughtful and a fantastic display of Redlands talent in music, acting, singing, dancing and managing large scale performances.

The time and effort that goes into making such productions come to life is extreme, so a huge thank you to all the staff who supported students across the months and months of preparation and a massive congratulations to all the students involved, particularly those in our Year 8 cohort: Angus Baird, Leo Campbell, Phoebe Dawson-Damer, Sienna de Saxe, Emma Foley, Joshua Freer, Anabelle Kendrigan, Matthew Krapovnitskiy, Ady Lee, Clem Leroux, Amelia Rudland, Phoebe Sun, Elliot Taylor, Astrid Vincent, Mackenzie Willis.

If you missed it this year, please get out there to see next year’s Musical. You will not be disappointed!

This Week

This week opened with a Chapel service on Monday and a Yr 7 and 8 Easter Assembly on Tuesday based around the Easter message. In Chapel we were treated to some lovely singing from our Yr 8 choristers and a thoughtful sermon from our Chaplain, Ms Phillips, about the importance of thinking not just about chocolate during Easter but being thankful for what we are given by others and embracing values of care and compassion for those around us. On Tuesday, this sentiment was reaffirmed with a powerful account of the central Christian story of Easter and Jesus’ sacrifice for humankind. No matter what faith students hold to or even if they do not follow a religion, it was an engaging reflection on the importance of love and care for others. It was also underlined by a wonderful, haunting performance from Clementine Roumanoff on the French horn!

It has been a busy term so far and with two more busy weeks to go, I want to wish everyone a lovely and restful Easter break. I hope you are able to spend some quality time relaxing with family and friends, enjoying sharing some chocolate eggs or going to a church service or doing whatever it is that brings you and your family closer together. Have a wonderful long weekend!

Halogen National Leadership Day

On Monday, a range of student leaders represented Redlands at the Halogen National Leadership Day. Several of our Yr 8 SRC representatives – Charlie Lee, Lily Musgrave-Kresa and Kate Rintoul – attended the event and benefitted from the engaging conversations and presentations offered around how our leadership style impacts others and reflects who we are as people.

Halogen asks of students the central question “what does it means to lead well?” Their website clarifies their mission as:

“What does it mean to lead well? We have been asking leaders this question for some time now. How we lead ourselves and others in any kind of situation reveals a large part of who we are as people. Who our leaders are as people (whether they be prime ministers, parents or prefects), determines the size and shape of the home, school, country and world we live in. Questions about HOW and WHY we influence the people around us are what drives Halogen.”

This event was a valuable one, designed to benefit students interested in developing their leadership potential and offering great space for personal growth.

Students engaged with a range of presentations across the day, prompting them to consider the following:

  • What leadership means to you?
  • Your strengths and areas for growth in leadership.
  • The impact you hope to make through leadership, both personally and in the community.
  • How you can use your background, perspective, and talents to contribute effectively to a leadership role.
  • Challenges you anticipate encountering as a leader.

2024 Secondary School Cross Country Carnival

Today, despite the morning rain, Yr 8 strapped on their joggers and pushed themselves physically and mentally to run through the Cross Country Carnival. There were many smiles and some grimaces but it was a positive experience that brought the cohort together. I was really pleased to see some of our Yr 8s step up and support and encourage the younger Yr 7 cohort.

Cross Country

Well done to everyone who competed! Congratulations especially to our winners: Jamie Rogerson U13 girls winner; Natalie Bain U14 girls runner up and Liv Law U14 girls winner; Alex Taylor U14 boys runner up and Tristan Fournier Le Ray U14 boys winner.

English Writing Competitions

There are some exciting opportunities for eager students to flex their writing muscles this term and next with the following writing competitions now open for submissions from students in Yrs 7-12:

We encourage all students to have a go at crafting a piece of writing. Whether it is based on work they have done in their English class or something they have composed out of their own interest, writing a piece that is judged externally is a great way to gain validation for effort and skill.

Year 7

Musical – Legally Blonde

What a performance! Congratulations to all the talented Year 7 students whose hard work and dedication made the production of Legally Blonde an unforgettable success! Your passion and commitment were evident in every aspect of the performance, from the impeccable choreography to the flawless vocals and seamless transitions. It takes a huge team to put together such a professional performance and everyone involved should be so proud of their efforts. We encourage  Yr 7 students to get involved in the Musical for 2025, there are many opportunities both on stage and behind the scenes. These events bring students together from across each year group and the genuine friendships and connections made will last a lifetime. Well done everyone.

Cross Country Carnival

Cross Country carnivals provide numerous benefits for children in both physically and socially. Beyond the obvious boost to physical fitness through extensive running, these events foster a sense of teamwork and house spirit among participants. As children train together, they not only support one another but also develop essential life skills such as goal-setting, perseverance, and resilience.

Here are some photos of today’s Cross Country Carnival.

Congratulations

A huge congratulations to Grant Wrighter, our wonderful 7RW Tutor and his wife Katherine on the birth of their beautiful baby girl Charlotte.  A huge thank you to 7RW students and families for their kindness and generosity by contributing some lovely baby gifts.

We can’t wait to meet her.

Easter

As Easter draws near, there’s a sense of excitement and joy in the air. Families come together, ready for the fun-filled traditions that await. From hunting for Easter eggs to sharing delicious meals, everyone looks forward to the special moments that come with this holiday. Whether it’s enjoying a leisurely brunch or simply spending time with loved ones, Easter is a time to relax, unwind, and appreciate the simple joys of life.

We would like to wish all our students and families a happy and restful Easter weekend filled with laughter, love, and relaxation!

Head of Junior School

I am certain that the upcoming Easter long weekend is a well-timed opportunity for us to catch our collective breath. Easter holds deep significance in the Christian tradition and its message of hope, love and new beginnings also resonates with people of all beliefs and backgrounds. At our Easter Service Ms McKenzie shared the Easter story and celebrated the wonderful message of hope and new life. As we welcome the arrival of Easter, I hope that you are able to enjoy some quality family time.

Year 6 Leadership Training

As the eldest members of the Junior School community, Year 6 students play an important part in leading and setting the tone for the rest of the School, not least by being positive role models for younger students. To support them in this regard, this week Year 6 students participated in a leadership workshop run by David King, leadership coach to the ACT Brumbies and Australian Wallaroos Rugby. Through a series of interactive teamwork activities and problem-solving trials, the students were introduced to the idea that leadership manifests in diverse forms and is not confined to traditional roles or titles. A key message was that everyone possesses unique strengths and perspectives that can inspire and influence others. Whether through acts of kindness, innovative problem-solving, or compassionate listening, everyone has the capacity to lead and make a meaningful impact within our school.

The Wayside Chapel

One important element of leadership is serving and helping others less fortunate than ourselves. As the School’s major Service initiative this year, we will be supporting the Wayside Chapel. In the coming weeks, Ms McKenzie and our School Captains, Pax and Amelie, will inform you about the work of the Wayside Chapel and the activities and initiatives we will be undertaking to support this important community charity.

International Day

On Tuesday 9 April (Week 11), our school community will celebrate our global-mindedness and diversity through our annual International Day focus. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up in either international dress or colours for the day and teachers will have a series of themed lessons during the day. Parents are encouraged to connect with your child’s class teacher if you are able to present or share your own cultural backgrounds and experiences utilising the knowledge we have in our community and connecting home and school further.

Children’s Opera

We are excited to share that our Junior Choir with its 121 choristers will participate in Musgrove Opera’s performance of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle at The Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood on Tuesday 9 April. Alongside a stellar cast led by soprano, Brianna Louwen, they will be joined by over 180 young singers from schools including Kambala, The Kings School, John Colet School and Ascham School.  I applaud our students and music team for their huge efforts and hard work over many weeks in preparing for this special performance and hope they will relish the opportunity to perform in this finale of the 2024 Children’s Opera Project.

Happy Easter

On Wednesday morning, members of the Redlands community gathered at St Peter’s to share in the Easter message and to enjoy some shared time to reflect on the true meaning of Easter. It was a peaceful way to start the day and to take the time to stop and be grateful for the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us all.

Ms McKenzie held the Prep Easter service this morning where she shared the Easter story and celebrated the wonderful message of hope and new life that is always so fondly symbolised with the giving of Easter Eggs and being grateful for new beginnings!

I truly hope that this Easter provides you all with time to be joyous, be with family, and to have some fun!

Please remember that next Monday is a public holiday and school will resume on Tuesday.

On behalf of all the staff, we would like to wish all our Redlands families a very happy Easter.

Raise Dough: Bake a Difference

One of my favourite things about Redlands is when all sections of the School come together to support an important cause. This week was a wonderful example of this collaboration between sections of the school and our families in baking for and raising much needed funds for the Raise Foundation which has supported over 13,500 young people through early intervention and youth mentoring programs across Australia.

Student voice is such an important element to a young person’s education and this initiative was originally pitched by a group of Year 9 Commerce students for an assessment task last year, they are now a team of enterprising Year 10 students who brought their ideas to life by working together to design and execute the whole school bake sale. We are all extremely proud of these senior students for not only what they achieved, but in how they led by example with the Junior Campus students. Our Prep learners were in awe of having the ‘big kids’ over in the playground. I really love this connection and look forward to further opportunities later in the year.

I would like to sincerely thank all those bakers who sent in cakes, cupcakes, biscuits and many more treats. Again, such a heartwarming sense of community and connection is so appreciated. Thank you.

International Day

9 April

Thank you to all our parent who have volunteered to come into our classrooms on International Day. We are super excited to share in your stories, music, arts and crafts and so many other things.

Students, staff and parents (no pressure!) are all encouraged to come to school on International Day dressed in costumes or colours of a country that they associate with. With 53 nationalities represented on the Junior Campus, the day is sure to be full of colour, vibrancy and a lot of fun.

There will be a variety of foods available on the day for our students to taste and experience. If you wish to bring some exciting international food to share, please email Karin at kpontes@redlands.nsw.edu.au with details. Details of ingredients will be posted in next week’s Note Day.

Junior Campus Sibling Carline

Thank you to all those who responded to the Junior Campus sibling carline survey earlier this term. Ian Holden and I very much appreciated your feedback which was quite varied in nature.

After lengthy discussions and logistical considerations, we have decided that the current pick up arrangements for our K-6 students will remain the same.

The varied activities that happen across the campus in the afternoons, staffing, resourcing and the length of time that our youngest of learners would have to wait, were all considered in this decision.

I know this may not be the outcome that some families were hoping for, but please remember that if you have a child in Kindy or Year 1 and another in Year 2, the younger child can wait in the car line or in the playground with a staff member until your Year 2 child is picked up. This does save some parents using prep car line twice in an afternoon!

A Few Housekeeping Requests

Sharing pick up duties

It is great to see parents car-pooling in the afternoons, can I please remind the community that the class teacher must be informed via the School Planner if their child is being picked up by another parent in the afternoon. This is a child safety procedure which must be strictly adhered to please.

I have passed on to staff not to allow children to go home with anyone other than their parent/carer unless we have been alerted to a change in arrangements. Thank you for your understanding with this and for always keeping our children safe.

This may take the shape of storytelling, books, costumes, music. dancing or art and craft experiences. Please speak to your class teacher if you would like to share with the class

Mrs Huon and Mrs Thomas – Reggio Emilia Study Tour

Mrs Huon and Mrs Thomas will be travelling to Italy in April to attend a study tour of the schools in Reggio Emilia. The Municipal early childhood programs in Reggio Emilia, Northern Italy, for children aged three months to six years, are internationally acclaimed for the inspirations, challenges and provocations they provide for all those concerned with the care and education of young children. Founded and developed by educational theorist, Loris Malaguzzi, the schools demonstrate a distinctive and innovative curriculum and pedagogy as well as a method of school organisation which recognises the potential of young children to question, reflect, problem-solve, theorise and experiment. The schools in Reggio Emilia demonstrate, by making children’s learning visible, that children are capable of devising creative ways of knowing, understanding and making connections and meaning. There is a particular emphasis on the role of the environment, both social and physical, and the cultural, geographic, political, economic and historical experiences of Reggio Emilia are incorporated into learnings. Mrs Huon and Mrs Thomas depart on 5 April. Their classes will be covered by Redlands House staff and permanent casual staff over the last week of term.

Secondary Sport

It has been great to see the start of Winter Season take shape, there is a sense of excitement in the air particularly as the Year 7 students get their first chance to represent the School in their chosen sports. ‘The hard work puts you where the good luck can find you’ is a quote that I have seen a lot recently and to me it highlights  the importance of diligence, dedication, and perseverance in achieving success. When applied to teenagers in sports, it underscores several crucial points:

  • Commitment to Training and Games: Teenagers aspiring to excel in sports must understand that success is not merely the result of innate talent but is primarily driven by consistent effort and dedication. Engaging in rigorous training sessions, honing skills, and refining techniques are vital components of the journey toward success.
  • Building a Strong Foundation: Adolescence is a critical period for skill development and physical conditioning. By putting in the hard work during their formative years, teenagers lay the groundwork for future success. Regular practice and training allow them to build a solid foundation of skills, endurance, and mental resilience, which are essential for excelling in competitive sports.
  • Opportunities: While luck may seem like a factor in success, it often arises from being prepared and in the right place at the right time. Teenagers who consistently invest time and effort into their sport increase their chances of encountering favourable opportunities.
  • Overcoming Adversity: Sports teach valuable life lessons, including the ability to persevere through challenges and setbacks. Teenagers who understand the value of hard work are better equipped to navigate obstacles, setbacks, and failures, viewing them as opportunities for growth rather than deterrents to success.

The quote highlights the symbiotic relationship between hard work and success. Teenagers in sports who embrace the ethic of hard work position themselves to capitalise on opportunities, maximise their potential, and ultimately achieve their goals. Luck may play a role, but it is hard work that sets the stage for success.

‘The mindset isn’t about seeking a result – its more about the process of getting to that result. it’s about the journey and the approach. it’s a way of life. i do think that it’s important in all endeavours to have that mentality’

Football capitalised on the gathering of its cohort for trial games last Saturday by holding its season launch event on the new Northern astroturf Fields at Macquarie University.

Gerry Gomez, Football Director, announced the addition of four more teams to the program this year due to the sport’s growing popularity. He noted that the outstanding performance of the First XI Boys at the CIS Plate on Friday (winning 8-1) sets a promising tone for what looks to be a fantastic season ahead!

Captains Hannah Garde and Liam McFarlane delivered a heartfelt speech emphasising the significance of unity within the squad before announcing the selected players for the Boys and Girls 2nds teams.

Gerry, along with Assistant Head of Sport (Coach and Student Development) Graham Nes, had the honour of presenting the First XI Girls and Boys with their jerseys. Mr Nes remarked on the intense competition for spots in the Firsts, acknowledging the commendable dedication and skill demonstrated by all players throughout the selection process.

Congratulations to all players.

If parents wish grant permission for students to be picked up/leave from the training venue, this is to be communicated via email to jparsonage@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Students are encouraged to attend the Fitness Center more regularly to complement their development within the sport. The Fitness Centre is open to all each morning.

Opens Rugby will have an extra compulsory Fitness Centre commitment. This is also scheduled.

Students will be made aware of Saturdays’ commitments once they are locked in.

Trainings:

Students are to wear full Redlands sports uniform.

Students are to bring footy boots (no metal studs) and mouthguards to EVERY session. If students play in any other protective wear they are encouraged to bring these to training – headgear/ shoulder pads.

Students will be unable to participate in contact drills without a mouthguard.

To note:

Season 2024 will see a change to the tackle height rule for all levels of Community Rugby across Australia. We’re thrilled to share that the tackle height has been reduced to below the sternum, making Rugby Union safer and reducing the risk of concussion significantly. These new rules have been trialled across the world including in NZ, England, France and have seen really positive results. There are diagrams and an explanation in pulse files on the Rugby page.

All rugby students will undergo concussion briefing of updated school policies before the end of Term 1. This will also be communicated with parents/careers.

It has been a great few weeks of Winter Tennis and we are seeing some real talent over the groups. Please note there have been a few adjustments to Tennis groups and for all to check Clipboard for any changes. There may be further adjustments to groups as we work into Term 2.

Water Polo

Students should be familiar with how and where to view their weekly sessions. Sessions are outlined for the remainder of term.

Each players within the Water Polo program  will have the following requirements:

  • 2 Training Sessions per week and 1Game

1x Pool session on Thursday for all ages

All Boys will need to wear Redlands swimmers, they can be purchased from the Uniform Shop. All Girls will need to wear the Redlands Water Polo Cat Suits, which can also be purchased from the Uniform Shop, they are the only swimmers that are to be worn in the pool. Water Polo is a representative sport and as such students are reminded that they need to arrive to their fixtures in either full school uniform or full Redlands Sports Track Suit. There is an additional cost to Water Polo, with students needing to pay a pool entry fee on the nights of competition.

General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2024 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:
  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • We have been lucky enough to have a relatively dry winter and to start the summer season, we use a number of fields that are multi-purpose and all weather.
  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Junior Sport

Athletics Pre-Season

In a first of its kind format for Junior School last week we had Week 1 of our 4 week Athletics Pre-Season program at Rotary Park Athletics track. The students involved are all from our Summer Rep Sports program who finished their regular season last Saturday. Every student worked extremely hard competing in as many events as they could with their coach and we were also able to get times for the 200m, 400m and 800m events so they can track their progress over the next few weeks. Credit to the students, they were engaged, enthusiastic and gave it their all. Please enjoy the short video I put together from footage I was able to capture yesterday.

Winter Sport Trials

Well done to all our students who attended the first of two compulsory trials for our Term 2 Winter Representative Sport Programs. We had mixed Football, Rugby, Netball and Hockey on site and was great to see the students continue to show their enthusiasm for school sport despite many of them being relatively new to the sports on offer.

Representative Sports – Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Paul Kelly Cup AFL Yr 5 & 6 Students

Thank you to those families who have completed the expression of interest for the AFL PKC. Named in honour of Sydney Swans legend and New South Wales footballer Paul Kelly, the cup is the Premier primary school AFL competition in the state. Due to the level of interest we will now be entering 1 boys team and 1 girls team in the competitive competition which is a higher division than the ‘participation division’.

Giselle in Tokyo

Last week Ms Revie was given the opportunity to perform in the ballet Giselle with Tetsuya Kumakawa’s “K Ballet Company” in Tokyo. She portrayed the character of Berthe (Giselle’s Mother) who admonishes her daughter for dancing so much due to her weak heart, and tells the legend of the Wilis, the ghosts of unmarried women who die after being betrayed by their lovers and take revenge in the night by dancing men to death by exhaustion.  All very dramatic as you can see from the photos.

Hairspray

Our Year 4/5 Jazz dancers enjoyed dancing their performance piece Hairspray as one of 16 performance acts celebrating Harmony Week at an amazing multicultural concert on Saturday 23 March at Cammeraygal High School, Crows Nest.

It was a wonderful experience for the children who were very proud to represent Redlands at this event.

Thank you to Claire Wallis, Maddy Bowyer and Vanessa Weyland-Smith who all worked hard to make it happen, and also to the wonderful parents who made sure the students were in the right place at the right time, looking amazing!!!!

Congratulations – Legally Blonde!

Congratulations – we did it!! Over 110 students were involved either on stage, in the pit or behind the scenes in performing three completely sold out performances of Legally Blonde – the musical last week at The Concourse Chatswood. The performances were of exceptional quality and reflected the outstanding talents for all our performers, musicians and backstage crew members, we couldn’t be more proud. The excitement and energy was palpable all week and we hope you have all had a much deserved rest on your first Sunday off this term!

A special thank you presentation for students involved will be held in Redlands Hall, hosted by our Performing Arts Captains on Friday 3 May, 3:30pm – 5:00pm, we look forward to reflecting on the many memorable moments. A special thank you to all staff involved, as well as our wonderful Friends of Drama Group, without your dedication and collaboration, the Musical’s success would not have been possible.

We are truly in awe of the many amazing talents of all students involved. Thank you again for dedication to the Performing Arts at Redlands! Well done!

Lunchtime Concerts

It’s been so exciting to see students participate and take advantage of our Wednesday Lunchtime Concerts on the Senior Campus, in which Dr Jeremy Eskenazi helps provide performance craft feedback and accompaniment for students in a relaxed and positive space. We encourage students to email Dr Eskenazi if they are interested in performing, or just to come along with their lunch and bring a friend if they want to listen!

Junior Choir performance of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle with Musgrove Opera

Junior Choir with its 121 choristers has an exciting opportunity to participate in Musgrove Opera’s performance of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle, with over 180 young singers from schools including Kambala, The Kings School, John Colet School and Ascham School as the culmination of the 2024 Children’s Opera Project. The young singers fill the exciting surrounds of The Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood alongside a stellar cast led by soprano, Brianna Louwen on Tuesday 9 April.

Musgrove Opera produces contemporary opera that is fun, fresh and engaging from its base in Sydney, Australia. Founded in 2018 by Lachlan Massey, Artistic Director, the company has performed its signature adaptations of stories such as Pinocchio!, Hansel and Gretel and Max and Moritz to packed houses at The Concourse, the Sydney Opera House Utzon Room and on tour. Banjo Paterson’s delightful poem, Mulga Bill’s Bicycle, has been delighting readers since its first publication in The Sydney Mail in 1896. Now, Mulga Bill has a back story (and a few good tunes) in a new adaptation composed and conducted by Lachlan Massey.

Musgrove Opera’s Artistic Director, Lachlan Massey, says I’ve loved Mulga Bill’s Bicycle for a long time…it’s a highly rhythmic text full of percussive oomph! Finding the right musical setting for Mulga Bill was like trying to pair cheese and chocolate…when it matches it’s brilliant, but it takes a long time to find the right combination of flavours! I’m thrilled that our new Children’s Opera project will bring together hundreds of school children to form the children’s chorus who are truly the stars of the show.”

Come watch Junior Choir perform as part of this amazing performance!

AMEB – Certificate of Distinction

Redlands has just been awarded a Certificate of Distinction for the Top 10 results in 2023 as Most Outstanding Accredited School. This amazing result, which we also achieved in 2020 and 2021, is a testament to diligence  and application that our students put in, with the support of our Music Tutor team, that allows them to achieve their best.

In particular, I would like to thank our Resident Associate Artist, Dr Jeremy Eskenazi, for his extensive work in accompaniment and performance craft with the students involved, as well as our Junior School Music Administrator, Jacqueline McGlade, for her superlative administration and support of students on the day of their exams here at Redlands.
