Issue 9 2023 Term 1 Week 9 - 30 Mar 2023

From the Principal

This week we were excited to announce our new residential Experiential Learning Program for future Yr 9 students, commencing in 2025, to staff, parents and the current Yr 7 cohort who will be the first to experience this wonderful opportunity. Years of research, planning and preparation have led to this announcement, and I want to thank all of the staff who have been involved in this work to date and who will continue to be involved in the development of this program over the next two years.

We truly believe that this residential Experiential Learning Program will have a transformative impact on our students and enhance our vision of inspiring them to achieve life-readiness and become well-rounded, confident, resilient and compassionate young adults who are well prepared for their senior years at Redlands and life beyond the school gates.

This eight-week program at High Country Campus will be part of the curriculum for all Yr 9 students, either in Term 1 or Term 2, so they will not need to register to participate in it. However there will be an opt-out option, if necessary, and those students will participate in an alternative program on the Senior Campus.

We are keen to hear both your feedback on this program, as well as any questions you might have, as these will help us to inform further information we share with the community. You can find more information on the program, as well as the introductory video, HERE and you may contact feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you have any feedback or questions at this time.

I would like to acknowledge all of the parents, staff and, most of all, students who were involved in the amazing Secondary School production of the Musical, The Addams Family, last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Full disclosure… I loved it! The palpable energy in the audience was yet another indication that the performing and creative arts continue to flourish at Redlands.

While I congratulate all the students who shone on the stage, I would like to make a special mention of the large number of students who were involved in the crew, production, worked backstage or were in the orchestra pit. Very few other schools would have so many students leading these production areas of a School Musical, and while they might not be “in the bright lights”, their contributions are truly appreciated.

It is with sadness that I announce Director of Music (P-12), Ms Amy Richardson, will be leaving us at the end of Term 2 to take up the position of Director of Music at Santa Sabina College. Amy has made a significant contribution to Redlands since 2016 as a Music teacher, Head of House, Head of Junior Campus Music and most recently as Director of Music across the two campuses, and she will be missed. Shortly we will commence the search for a new Director of Music to begin in Term 3 this year.

Community Update

Late last week I had the pleasure of attending The Addams Family Musical with my family, and it was spectacular! It was truly impressive to see how the buzz around campus from all the students, staff and parents involved in the lead up, transformed into a sophisticated and professional program of performance and production. Thank you and well done to all involved on this uplifting event for our community.

The Second Hand Uniform Sale gets underway this weekend and my thanks to the army of volunteers, led by the Redlands Parent and Friends Association and Uniform Shop, for their assistance in delivering this important event.  Clean pre-loved uniforms can be donated through the Uniform Shop up to this Friday.  Proceeds from the sale will be dedicated towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund and more detail can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day.

It is always a pleasure to reflect on our Alumni communities’ experiences at Redlands, and this week Judy Blix (Class of 1959) reflects on her time in and around the Liggins Building.  Judy’s recollections, along with an update on our Alumni activities and events, can be enjoyed here.

A reminder that we welcome our community to join us for a time of Easter reflection, prayer and connection on Wednesday 5 April from 7.00pm in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Church, Cremorne (with parking located on Waters Rd).

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kudos to the RPA Committee and all our volunteers for preparing for another Second Hand Uniform Sale. This initiative, with a long-term tradition, has been assisting our families, contributing to our Sustainability strategic objective and also supporting the Redlands Foundation means-tested Scholarship Fund.

We look forward to providing the opportunity of a Redlands education to an exceptionally talented student by awarding another means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship to a Year 7 student in 2024.

For more details about this event, please visit the RPFA section.

Liggins Restoration Appeal

A sincere thank you to all members of our community who generously supported the Liggins Restoration Appeal. The Liggins Building is the only remaining element of our school grounds linking almost 100 years of Redlanders.

There is still a unique opportunity to contribute and make a donation towards the Family Plaque. For more information about our Heritage or how your support matters, please visit HERE.

Liggins Stories from our Community

Kim Flatman, Alumni and Community Engagement Coordinator, has been collecting stories from various members of our community.

Judy Blix – Redlander 1959

When my mother (Joyce Wilson) attended Redlands in the 1920s there were Boarders housed in the Liggins Building. Miss Roseby was the much-loved Headmistress at the time.

In my day, from Junior school on, in the 1950s, the ground level of the Liggins Building was used as an Assembly Hall where we used to sit every morning, cross legged on the wooden floor. There was a stage at one end and Mrs Hill used to play the piano. We sang hymns and said prayers and I still remember the words to the School Song.

Gym classes were also held there with Mr Turner (from Bjelke Petersen).  Miss Steele, Deputy Head, kept a keen eye on the length of our sports tunics by measuring how high the hems were from the floor when we were kneeling! Our sports tunics had a wide ribbon band in the colours of our various houses sewn onto the tunic, just above the hemline. Mine was Cowper (gold).

I remember there was also a laboratory on the ground floor at the side of the Liggins Building and sometimes, as Juniors, we would lift each other up on our shoulders to peek through the blinds to see what mysterious things were being taught!

The upstairs consisted of classrooms with rows of pegs outside on the landing where we hung our school bags.

Outside the building across the courtyard, adjacent to tennis courts, was a shed which housed sports equipment and this is where the “free milk” was left in crates, often in the sun, which we were made to drink at recess!

North American Chapter Zoom Meeting

It was fantastic to reconnect with Redlanders from the Class of 1987 to the Class of 2018 who shared their updates and had an opportunity to see who resides in their neighbourhood.

Kristen Finney, School Captain 1987, who was featured in Variety Magazine last year as new the Head of Content Curation for Disney International based in LA, shared with the group:  “I love Redlands. In fact, I wish I still lived in Australia so my children could attend the school” – a lovely and powerful testament to the ongoing engagement of our Redlander Community.

If you are aware of members of our Community relocating or currently living in the US, there is a willing network of Alumni who are happy to connect with information on where to live, building a network or mentoring support. If you know of any Redlanders living abroad, please email alumni@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Musicals at Redlands have a Long Tradition

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in what was a fabulous opening night for this year’s School Musical, The Addams Family.

Enormous thanks to award winning performer Rachel Beck, RL 1987, who visited rehearsals on Wednesday and engaged with and encouraged students – performers, stage crew, hair and makeup and more.

In the 1980s, the School was very fortunate to have a strong focus on Musical Theatre, which brought the community together from ticketing and making seat numbers to stick on to the back of Assembly Hall chairs, to set building, costume design, and of course, performing.

“I remember Alice in Wonderland in 1981 being wonderful with costumes made by the marvellous Michelle Gray. Our lead Charmaine Grey as Alice went onto NIDA after school” Natalie King RL 1982

In 1982 the first coed Musical Bye Bye Birdie delighted audiences in the School’s Assembly Hall. “Bye Bye Birdie was great fun to be involved with”. Miles Townend RL 1984

Man of Steel was the best show ever. Such a happy time. All those costumes made under the leadership of Michelle Gray!” Zoe Smith RL 1989. This was a ground-breaking production. A cable strung from the ceiling of the Hall launched ‘The Man of Steel’, played by Juan Renshaw, over the head of the audience before landing with great aplomb onto the stage. Exciting stuff indeed!

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Next week’s walk on Wed 5 April will be from Watsons Bay to Dover Heights. Meet at the Watsons Bay Hotel, 1 Military Rd, Watsons Bay at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie Kimber or call 0406 691 533.

Book Club

Come along and enjoy the lively conversation of other Redlands parents from all around the world with a common love of reading. The Book Club meets twice each School term, rotating among members’ homes. There is also an annual visit to Sunday Writer’s festival (May) and sometimes to movies that are tied in with a book discussion.

We had a great meeting earlier this week discussing the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Thanks again to Katherine for hosting and Mara for leading the discussion.

Our next meeting will be sometime in the first week of May to discuss Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. We are looking for someone to host the next meeting. Please let us know if you might be able to do so!

Other books planned for Term 2 and 3 are: The Familiars by Stacey Halls, The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley and BABEL by R.F. Kuang.

Head of Secondary School

This week we have all been revelling in the talents of our Musical cast. The Addams Family was a truly remarkable performance and enjoyed by all. Sincere thanks go to all students, staff and parents who supported this wonderful event. I had a blast and so did all of those around me. It was a joy to sit next to Mr Guha at the matinee on Saturday afternoon and be enthralled throughout the show. There have been a few tired students at school this week! But we know their fatigue sits well with them as they express their pride in being part of such a successful community event.

As we approach the final week of this term, the students are resiliently navigating the various challenges which present themselves at this time. In our assembly this week, our younger students were reminded that basic standards will be expected right through until the final day of term. Respect and responsibility are essential to being part of a large community like ours at Redlands, and it has been gratifying to see the students step up, take care of themselves, each other and the School space. Yr 8 selflessly supported the tidy up of the undercroft this week, ensuring their shared space with Yr 7 was left in a respectful way. There are a lot of lunchboxes and drink bottles floating around the Senior Campus at the moment, and students have one week to collect them, before they are disposed of. Students were also reminded about how they should present and act when in school uniform. After the school day, students who are not remaining in the Learning Hub to study, should make their way directly home. Many are choosing to visit Woolworths or Chargrill Charlies to purchase a snack or early dinner, and then returning to school to eat and congregate with their friends for an hour or two. We encourage students to travel directly home after school so they can engage in home learning and revision. We appreciate your support in expecting students home at a reasonable hour on typical days as well as after Sport training.

This week our Yr 12 captains presented the Fall Forward Award to a Yr 8 student, Katie Budden. The student who received this award has stepped up in the Musical’s Production department. Despite having little experience with lighting, she challenged herself to be spotlight leader – something she wasn’t necessarily super comfortable with. In the end, however, she did a fantastic job, as everyone who went to the Musical would know, and is extremely well deserving of this award.

Mr Corcoran announced to Yr 7 this week the launch of an Experiential Learning Program which would see them spend a term at High Country Campus in 2025 when they are in Yr 9. We are very excited about this development and the opportunities and experiences Yr 7 will have when they commence Stage 5. You can hear Mr Corcoran’s announcement HERE.

Congratulations to Yr 11 student and sailor Alissandra Braden. Over the weekend Ali competed in the ILCA Metropolitan Championships in the Olympic class rig for the first time. She sailed really well and placed: 1st Girl under 17, 2nd U17 overall, 4th female and 7th overall. Quite a set of achievements!

Earlier this week the Redlands Career and University Advisors welcomed UAC to the School to present on admission to university. This presentation is available on Pulse here. Further information about entry to NSW and ACT universities for IB students, including subject equivalents and the conversion chart can also be found here.

International Day Takes Place next Tuesday

Next Tuesday 4 April is International Day on the Senior Campus, an event hosted by the Languages Faculty. We celebrate Redlands’ diverse international community and highlight the cultures of the Languages that we offer at Redlands.  At recess, there will be an opportunity to sample delicious international dishes from China, France, Japan and Spain provided by the Canteen. Students will be able to choose between spring rolls (China), pain au chocolat (France), miso soup (Japan) or churros (Spain). Students are able to place an order for these items through Flexischools. At lunchtime, there will be international-themed stalls in Liggins Quad. Students will be able to take part in activities, or to purchase sweet snacks from the stalls. Snacks will be priced at $2 or $3 and purchases can be made on the day by card or cash, with a preference for cash where possible. A sausage sizzle will also be taking place in Liggins Quad at lunchtime where students can purchase food and drink items.

Emergency Action Alliance

Proceeds from sales on the day will be donated to Emergency Action Alliance’s Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal. Emergency Action Alliance is a group of 15 leading aid organisations in Australia who use their reach and resources to save lives around the world. The funds raised will be used to aid those impacted by the recent earthquakes.

Teens, parties, gatherings and alcohol: What do parents need to know?

A Parent Presentation by Paul Dillon is being held on Wednesday, 10 May 2023 – 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm in Redlands Hall. We strongly encourage parents of students in Yr 9, 10 and 11 to attend this event. Please register your attendance via a RSVP using this LINK.

During adolescence, teens develop a biological need to be around friends and it is important to provide them with opportunities to socialise. Using the most current data, this presentation will examine the use of alcohol and other drugs by young people. Some simple strategies will be provided to help ensure teens are able to interact with friends on a Saturday night and, at the same time, reduce the risk of underage drinking and the potential dangers associated with such behaviour. The presentation aims to empower parents with a positive message and assist them in having open and honest family discussions in this complex area.

This session will be covering material aimed at parents and carers and it is not appropriate for students to attend. As Paul’s sessions are always highly relevant, informative and practically based, we encourage all parents to attend as we continue to work in partnership in developing our students’ wellbeing.

National Schools Constitutional Convention Reflection – Lucy Horton

The National Schools Constitutional Convention was hosted in Canberra on Ngunnawal country from 21 to 23 March, bringing together 120 students, including myself, across Australia. The 28th of its kind, the convention aims to foster political awareness in youth who may be interested in social or political science in their post-school studies, and also to empower every Australian student with the skill of political literacy, which, in an age of polarisation and misinformation, is more important than ever (Only 38% of Yr 10 students in Australia meet the satisfactory threshold for general knowledge of civics and citizenship!). The topic was: Is section 128 still a necessary requirement to change such an important document as the Australian Constitution?. This question harboured particular pertinence in light of calls for a constitutional amendment regarding the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and the inclusion of First Peoples in the text.

Representing NSW Parliament, I attended Parliament House, Government House, the High Court of Australia, and the Old Parliament House, as well as the Museum of Australian Democracy. My favourite experience was sitting in on Question Time in the House of Representatives, which was, if not professional, very compelling. I saw a few familiar faces from my area such as Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender (and one very familiar face on the backbench!). Topics covered included the rising cost of living, methane emissions control, early education support frameworks, and the potential litigation of Nazi and extremist iconography. Even if at times very juvenile in its conduct, the sitting of Parliament was a meaningful reminder to me that diversity of belief, background and perspective in Parliament is key to the sustenance of a healthy, receptive democracy.

In Keynote Speaker sessions and working groups, we analysed the practice and implications of section 128 of the Australian Constitution, which stipulates that constitutional change can only come about from a positive double majority referendum result (a majority of voters nationwide and a majority of voters in a majority of Australian states). Owing to the difficulty of getting such a result, it isn’t surprising that only 8 out of 44 proposed laws (via referenda) have passed in Australia’s history. Moreover, excluded from the state counts are the Northern Territory and the ACT; a topic that spurred much debate amongst our cohort. Is this fair? When the near-30% First Nations population in the Northern Territory is contextualised within the scope of the upcoming Voice Referendum, it doesn’t appear to be. This led us to consider how traditional federalism might clash with the autonomy and individual interest of states, both through a purely constitutional analytical lens (we looked at Sections 117, 121, and 122), an educational lens – thanks to speaker Professor Peter Anderson, who specialises in Indigenous and traditionally-oriented peoples’ education – and an historical lens. We delved into the rich history of constitutional law in post-Federation Australia and discussed how we could balance the need for a trusty and steadfast rule of law with evolving social and cultural values. We interacted with this dilemma via a series of comparative analyses to constitutional amendment processes of Canada, New Zealand, and the USA, which I found fascinating because of my passion for political science and international relations.

Finally, we examined the rare precedents of constitutional amendment; for example, the 1967 Referendum to omit section 127 of the Constitution that prohibited Indigenous Australians from citizenship and electoral rights passed with a 90.77% majority. In this spirit, the culmination of the Convention was a mock Referendum in which the cohort voted whether we should amend section 128 to allow a single majority/national total instead of the existing double majority system as a means to change the Constitution. The outcome, perhaps surprisingly, was a resounding ‘NO’; 35-80.

There was also a Communique drafted by the convenors, which will, excitingly, be relayed to the Senate in the coming weeks.

I extend my thanks to NSW Parliament for facilitating this experience, and urge all Australians to, in times of potentially great change like The Voice, platform and listen to the desires and concerns of people most affected – First Nations people – and commit ourselves to building a stable and inclusive democracy by actively engaging with our communities and parliamentary representatives.

Yr 12 Study Skills

Last Friday, all Yr 12 students gathered to discuss productive strategies to assist them with studying for their upcoming assessments which will be during the 1st and 2nd week of Term 2.

The general framework for effective study and revision included:

  • Build a core set of notes/drafts covering each subject’s syllabus.
  • Complete hand-written cheat sheets for each subject topic including mindmaps, flash cards, and trigger words (80/20 approach)
  • Complete Practice questions for every subject (using a cheat sheet)
  • Follow up with feedback from teachers and peers (study groups) prior to an assessment, if the clarity is needed on any topic areas.
  • Identify weaker areas (80/20 approach) in the different subject topics, revise and redo.
  • Complete practice questions (without a cheat sheet) for every subject.

Believe it or not, it is time for this cohort to order their Yr 12 Jerseys! Students have been trying them on during Tutor these last few weeks to ensure they are ordering the correct size. Students have been asked to submit their size preference and their last name in all capital letters through a Google Form in the iLearn Yr 11 Pastoral Page Announcements. Parents are asked to provide payment information through Flexischools.

The Addams FamilyDa Da Da Dum (Snap Snap)

Yr 11 Language Students Celebrate Harmony Day at the Junior School

Yr 11 IB Spanish students visited the Junior School last week to support their Spanish Lunch event, as part of Harmony Week. They served paella and churros to the Years 3-6 students, whilst also giving them the opportunity to practise their Spanish. ¡Qué aproveche!

Reflections from Yr 11 French students:

“Today, in our French B class, we helped out at the Prep School for their Harmony Day celebrations. As a class we served Years K-2 “pains au chocolat” and “du lait au chocolat” (chocolate milk) to celebrate French culture. We also got to practise speaking French to the younger students and their teachers. It was really fun to see all of the primary kids dressed up in cute stereotypical French clothes and accessories (lots of the boys had drawn on fake moustaches and the girls wore bérets).” Sabine Murray

“It was a great experience and good fun to see all the little kids get involved in French culture – they had different outfits, some with football jerseys and others with bérets. Students were having lots of fun, as were we, serving typical French food and drink to everyone.” Arya Gapaillard

“The Junior School is certainly smaller than when I was there last. I joined Redlands in 2016 in Yr 4 and have fond memories of each Harmony Day being fed cultural dishes from all over the world. This year, as a Yr 11, going back and being the “big kid” handing out food was a novel experience and seeing the chocolate coated Kindy to Yr 2 students stumbling over “S’il vous plaît ” and “merci” made me very thankful for the continuation of French at Redlands.” Sebastian Speziali

“The Prep School students greeted us wearing French colours and clothing which symbolised the small but widespread community of French speakers in Australia.” Marianne Baudin

“During our French class today, we visited the Prep School for their Harmony Day celebrations. Our class was instructed to speak and talk with the Kindergarten, Yr 1 and Yr 2 students. The Prep students were dressed up as ‘traditional’ French people, and we served them ‘traditional’ French food and drinks for everyone.” Zara Clement

“We spent recess handing out food while wearing French colours and flags and we spoke a few words to students in French. It was quite cute to see them hesitantly walk up to us while wearing their berets and drawn-on moustaches. The best part for me was getting to see the kids and their friends walk up in tight pairs or groups and push each other to the front for who was going to go first talking to us. It made me realise that I am now one of those older kids I was so intimidated by when I was their age, which was a very nostalgic experience.” Emilie Leroux

“We gave chocolatines and chocolate milk to all of the kids from Kindy to Yr 2 and their reactions were priceless. The insane amount of shy little merci’s was hilarious and we were all happy to help them out with Harmony Day.” Max Rossiter

Epilepsy Awareness and Fundraiser at Battle of the Bands Monday Night!

Last Sunday, 26 March, was Epilepsy Awareness Day. The day was created to increase the public’s understanding of what happens in the brain for someone with Epilepsy and to eliminate the fear and stigma surrounding it. As we have several students at Redlands with Epilepsy, Yr 11 will be hosting a Bake Sale on Monday evening during Battle of the Bands to shine a light on the bravery and resilience of people with Epilepsy as it can be quite scary living with the fear and anxiety around epileptic seizures. All proceeds will be donated to Epilepsy Australia. The aim of this initiative is to reduce the stigma surrounding Epilepsy and to educate people on how they can help someone having a seizure and maybe save someone’s life.

On Monday afternoon from 5pm to 6pm, there will be a Bake Sale in the John Roberts Foyer before the Battle of the Bands. Money from this bake sale will go towards Epilepsy Australia. Yr 11 can get involved by baking an item for the Bake Sale, purchasing an item at the Bake Sale or contributing their time on Monday evening running the Bake Sale. A sign-up is open to them on the Yr 11 iLearn Pastoral Page. It is also a great opportunity to support peers who are performing Monday evening! Alongside the Bake Sale, Yr 11 students Halcyon Hunt, Lara Wilson and Winter Penney will also be giving out free temporary tattoos, magnets, and more!

To either donate or further explore the cause, please visit here.

The Addams Family Musical

Congratulations to the cast, crew, and production staff of this year’s School Musical, The Addams Family! Your dedication, hard work and creativity have truly paid off, and the final product was exceptional. We were blown away by the level of talent and professionalism that was displayed throughout the entire production process. The singing, dancing, acting, and technical aspects of the musical were all executed flawlessly, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

We also want to recognise the incredible effort that went into creating the sets, costumes, lighting, and sound design for the production. These elements were essential in bringing the story to life and creating a fully immersive experience for the audience.

In particular to the cast and crew of Year 10, we are so proud of the commitment and passion that you brought to the musical. You have truly set the bar high for future productions, and we know that you will continue to excel in all of your future endeavours.

Science & Engineering Day

“The Science and Engineering Challenge was an incredible opportunity for us Year 9 and 10 students to complete tasks we would not normally undertake at school. Angus, Jesse, Lachie and I were assigned the task of ‘bridge building’, where we constructed a model bridge out of balsa wood and tape, which then supported a railcar carrying increasingly heavy weights as it raced across a test rig. We placed 2nd in the bridge task and Redlands placed 3rd overall. Working as a team to solve complex problems taught me the importance of collaboration, creativity, and perseverance, instilling in me a deep appreciation for the wonders of science and engineering.”

Parent Resource – Sleep

“Teenagers are the most sleep-deprived segment of the population. This is a very under-recognised problem and the cost to society in the healthy development of young people is profound.”

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

Resource

Overview of this edition – Children these days seem to be going to bed later and later. Distractions such as TV, computer games, internet, texting friends and social media are all having a negative impact on a child’s sleep time. Sleep is vital to a child’s wellbeing. When children sleep well, they are more settled, happier and ready for school the next day. Sleep also strengthens their immune systems, supports overall development and their ability to function properly on a daily basis. Children who do not get enough sleep show increased levels of aggressive behaviour, are less attentive and are much less active. Trying to catch up on sleep on weekends is not the answer and can still lead to severe sleep deprivation. Recent studies have shown than many children, especially teenagers, are missing out on vital REM sleep, which is particularly important for memory and learning.

Year 9

This Week in Yr 9

Week 9 has certainly been an epic one! Yr 9 have completed a range of interesting assessments, run in the Cross Country Carnival and participated in a range of cocurricular activities with energy and flair! Students have also spent their Tutor Time completing their Approaches to Learning. This is an excellent way for students to visualise their goals in action, and to carefully consider their effort across all of their subjects.

The Addams Family Musical

Congratulations to the cast, crew, and production staff who worked exceptionally hard to stage The Addams Family at The Concourse last week! Your dedication, hard work, and creativity amalgamated to create an exceptional performance. The level of talent and professionalism was outstanding – the vocal range, dynamic acting and technical prowess were all on show and created an unforgettable experience for the audience.

In particular to the cast and crew of Year 9, we are so proud of the commitment and passion that you brought to the musical. You have truly set the bar high for future productions, and we know that you will continue to excel in all of your future endeavours!

The Fall Forward Award

Every second week at the 7-9 Student Led Assembly, the Fall Forward Award is given to students who have had great personal achievement, shown amazing engagement in the school community, or just simply stood out in a way that deserves recognition. Bonus points to those who have experienced some sort of disappointment and have grown from/overcame these challenges. The actual prize: an amazing gold Fall Forward-inspired badge that students can wear everywhere on their blazers. Students also get a certificate and a chocolate prize.

This week, the student who will be receiving this award has stepped up in the Musical Production department. Despite having little experience with lighting, she challenged herself to be spotlight leader – something she wasn’t necessarily super comfortable with. In the end, however, she did a fantastic job, as everyone who went to the Musical would know, and is extremely well deserving of this award. Congratulations to Katie Budden!

Spotlight on Visual Arts

In Visual Arts our Yr 9 students are developing their understanding of sculptural practice. They are currently engaged in reductive carving of soap stone using a variety of hand tools to create a stylised representation of the human form.

Year 8

It has been a big few weeks for students in our Yr 8 cohort. Over the three weeks we have wrapped up the Summer Sport season, presented a School Musical and taken part in the challenges of the Cross Country Carnival. All this while also maintaining our focus on the daily job of learning and navigating the assessment period of the term – it’s exhausting, and I know many students are looking forward to a well-earned break!

Exchange Program

Four Yr 8 students have taken part in an exchange program with students from Kristin School in New Zealand over the course of the term. These students are Chloe Petering, Ruby Gasmus, Kai Feldman and Sam Ashby. For all involved, this has been a wonderful and rewarding experience.

Here are how each of these students have reflected on this program:

“When the email entered my inbox all the way back in October 2022, I immediately knew that the New Zealand exchange was something I had to be a part of. I wanted to extend myself, try something new, and get out of my comfort zone. After the many nervous weeks leading up to the flight, I landed on the tarmac, with three other faces beaming at me. Between the first day of school, a visit to a theme park called Rainbows End, spending a weekend in Rotorua, and living through Cyclone Gabrielle, the overall experience was nothing short of brilliant. Getting to know seven amazing people was more rewarding than you could ever imagine. However, it was not short of challenges, such as overcoming homesickness and having to be highly independent. Yet, this just made the experience more memorable, as each of us learnt things about ourselves, and each other, that we did not know we could achieve. With the amazing support of each of the exchange students, I was able to overcome my homesickness, since we had created our own little family. I would strongly recommend this program to others, as it was incredible. Although it requires you to exit your comfort zone (and your home country) I think you find that it is so worth it.”

Chloe Petering

When I first saw the application for the New Zealand Exchange, I was immediately hooked. I was very interested in meeting new people and seeing new places and I wondered what would be different about Australia and New Zealand. I also thought that I might get very homesick and regret going in the first place. But I can assure you that I did not. The thing that comes to me the most when I think about going to New Zealand was going to Rainbow’s End, the Luna Park of Auckland. I remember this day the most for a lot of reasons. Firstly, most of the exchange students were there, meaning that it was so much fun hanging out with a large group of people. Secondly, I took so many risks, going on roller coasters I never would have and rides that scared me so much, but it all made the day much more satisfying. On the other hand, the biggest challenge I faced would have been Cyclone Gabrielle, a cyclone that stormed straight through Auckland. The School closed for two days so we had to go into online learning, bunker down the house, remove all objects from outside and stock up on supplies. It was scary but it made the trip extremely fun and unique. Overall, the exchange to New Zealand was incredible and unforgettable. I would highly recommend applying to this exchange or an exchange if you want a great adventure. I made so many new friends, met so many new people, undertake experiences I could not replicate and tried so many new things. I could not regret it any less.

Sam Ashby

I involved myself in the exchange because I wanted the opportunity not only to see other people’s lifestyles but specifically to see other countries’ day-to-day activities. I have always been interested in other people’s lives and how they use their advantages and overcome their struggles. I thought that going to school, going on camp, and being somewhere where my decisions don’t matter quite as much, but it was just spending time with such a great group. When I think of the exchange and the highlights, I think of  when we spent time together, even just playing tennis in the yard. Some challenges I found was spending so much time with our partners. I have siblings, so I have had lots of practice with living with other people, but some people don’t get that opportunity. Zoë my exchange partner doesn’t have any siblings. This meant that communication and expectations were harder because I expected it to be like having a sibling, with things not always being perfect the entire time. Zoë on the other hand expected more of a living with-a-friend type lifestyle. This did create some arguments, but we communicated how we both needed space and still had partially separate lives. This solved our problem, and after a week we were in swing and used to living with each other, so things got easier. I would definitely recommend this towards the next year eights, and all other Year 8s in the future because of the mere experiences this gives you. The feeling of not worrying about your life at home was the most surreal feeling ever. I believe the Schools organised this exchange perfectly because we all had three people whom we could connect to from home, one person whom we lived with and could talk to anything about, and an overall group of eight who always match your energy. The group was just so in sync that when we said goodbye, everyone was crying for hours, knowing we walked away from the airport with four new friends who were like siblings to us, whom we knew we would see again.”

Ruby Gasmus

I chose to do this exchange because I enjoy trying everything at least once, one of my motto’s is “Don’t knock till ya try it!” Which is something I try to follow and show in my actions. Another reason I chose to do this exchange was, at the time we had a Kiwi staying at our home, she would regale us with stories of the majestical land of New Zealand, and that really tipped me over the edge for the decision. Some of the things I enjoyed the most were exploring the School over there but also just going around New Zealand. We travelled to many places on the weekend including Rotorua which would probably have to be my favourite experience on the exchange. Generally, I believed that the entire exchange went relatively smoothly in my opinion with me having little troubles. The only things that did stick out to me was how different living there was, trying to get use to their home routine did take a bit of adapting, but they were very helpful and kind. Finally, I would GREATLY recommend this exchange, and exchanges in general, to students at Redlands. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience that allows you to see someone else’s life as well as increase your scope on the world; allowing you to better understand others from different countries.

Cross Country Results

On Monday a number of brave Yr 8 students faced the rain and wet conditions of the Macquarie University oval and fields to participate in the annual Cross Country Carnival. Year 7

Week 9 – Keeping Running Until the End

Let’s not talk about anything else but…The Addams Family Musical*!!

(*Note – the original lyric here is ‘love’ – – also a good thing to talk about!!)

If you managed to get out to The Concourse on Thursday, Friday or Saturday of last week then you would have experienced an absolute treat of Musical Theatre. The Addams Family Musical was funny, irreverent and offered beautiful messages about the importance of family, relationships, embracing individuality, and treasuring love! The cast and crew were passionate and professional, and supporting staff were excellent in harnessing the wonderful student potential. Congratulations to everyone who was involved! Particularly kudos goes out to all the Year 7 students who were involved: Leo Campbell, Sienna de Saxe, Emma Foley, Joshua Freer, Matthew Krapovnitsky, James Priestley, Phoebe Sun, Eliot Taylor and Mackenzie Willis. And also our very own Tutor, Mr Owen, who did a fantastic job conducting and directing the orchestra each night!

Fittingly, Week 9 began with the Cross Country Carnival – a suitable metaphor as we ‘keep running’ towards the end of Term. Monday was wet and windy, but around 65 Year 7 students braved the elements to push their legs through several kilometres, everyone finishing with a smile (grimace?) on their faces!

Congratulations to our top 3 place getters in the U12 and U13 Cross Country divisions:

Age Group

Female

Male

U12

1.       Phoebe Sun

2.       Catherine Thurner

3.       Matilda Hugman

1.       Angus Baird

2.       Akash Gohil

3.       Nicholas Gorman

U13

1.       Liv Law

2.       Lauren Rolfe

3.       Freja Nixey

1.       Finn Gurney (Year 8)

2.       Alex Taylor

3.       Felix Shwabsky

While some of our cohort were out running, the rest of the Year group engaged in their first Mindful Monday (normally our ‘Wellness Wednesday’). A mixture of mindfulness meditation, relaxation and fun ‘just dance’ exercises were engaged in, giving students energy to begin the week.

On Tuesday, Year 7 were introduced to a very exciting learning opportunity, which they will be the first to engage in as Year 9 for 2025. Mr Corcoran visited Year 7 and presented them to Redlands’ new Experiential Learning Program which will take students out of school to learn in the wonderful High Country Campus for Term 1 or Term 2 of 2025. The chance to immerse oneself in the beautiful landscape around Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains, while engaging in a range of valuable cross-disciplinary and life learning moments is an exciting future to consider! You can find out more through Pulse, including watching an introductory video through Pulse.

On Thursday, students also engaged in their first self-assessment for their effort tracking. The School’s effort tracking process rates students based on their behaviour, diligence and engagement. Subject teachers allocate students a grading out of 5 for each of these approaches to learning, and students also self-assess in this space, allowing them to compare their own opinions about their learning approaches to that offered by their teachers. This is a useful reflective exercise that we encourage students to embrace as a means for developing their self-awareness. It would be great to have conversations at home about how students think they are travelling terms of their behaviour, diligence and engagement, and consider strategies they might employ to develop their strength in these areas. We will certainly be seeking to build on such reflections during our Term 2 Tutor sessions.

This week we have also been reiterating the importance of considering the language we use when we engage with others. Language can be a great source of support and positivity but it can also cause great harm and damage. We want to ensure that our Year 7 cohort are using language thoughtfully and with consideration to others, making sure it is used to empower, not to put down others.

NSW School Vaccination Program 2023

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The following vaccines are offered free to Year 7 students at school on Wednesday 5 April.

  • Year 7 – diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV)

Students who miss this clinic date will be offered a catch-up opportunity on Thursday 25 May.

From February 2023, children in Year 7 will now only need one dose of HPV vaccination. This change has been endorsed by ATAGI based on evidence showing that one dose provides the same level of protection against HPV as two doses.

Vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received.  To provide consent for vaccination online go here, you will need:

Benefits of online consent for parents/carers:

  • SMS notifications when vaccinations are given
  • easy updating of your child’s details online
  • faster upload of your child’s vaccination records to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper-based consent form directly from the Year Advisor.

What to tell Children: Children should be informed about what to expect on the day of vaccination. We recommend advising them of the following:

  • Having breakfast on vaccination day is highly recommended.
  • If nervous, talk to the teacher about going first.
  • Following vaccination an SMS is sent to their parent/guardian to advise that the vaccine was given. A record of vaccination is automatically sent to the Australian Immunisation Register.

To help answer questions you may have regarding providing vaccination and online consent, please visit the NSW Health website.

Forbes Fundraise: A Message from Year 11

As some of you may know Forbes is a small town in NSW, neighbouring Lismore, which went through dire levels of flooding last year. They have slowly been recovering from flood levels reaching a 70-year record!! The environment is devastated, and the community is still in desperate need of some assistance from those who can help.

We are setting up a drive for the last week of school and continuing into next term, so please bring in anything you can manage, and it will go a long way!!

Items to include could be:

  • seedlings
  • canned goods
  • non-perishable foods
  • notebooks and school supplies
  • cutlery, utensils, frypans, cutting boards, bowls
  • financial aid
  • first aid kits
  • clothing
  • sewing items
  • tools (old hammers)

We will have boxes set up every morning at the front and back gates in Week 10 or under the gym throughout the day.

Thank you everyone in advance for the consideration and donations!

As we have several students at Redlands with Epilepsy, Year 11 will be hosting a Bake Sale on Monday evening during Battle of the Bands to shine a light on the bravery and resilience of people with Epilepsy as it can be quite scary living with the fear and anxiety around epileptic seizures.

Please come by Monday evening to purchase a baked item and to support students at Battle of the Bands! Alongside the Bake Sale, Year 11 students Halcyon Hunt, Lara Wilson and Winter Penney will also be giving out free temporary tattoos, magnets, and more!

To either donate or further explore the cause, please visit here.

Congratulations

We were thrilled to welcome Ms Hurley back this week after her wedding last weekend to her new husband, Dave. I know many families who have had Ms Hurley as their child’s class teacher over the last decade will be equally thrilled and as Class 3 Red parents are already aware, Ms Hurley will combine her honeymoon with her deserved Long Service Leave in Term 3. Ms Hurley will keep her name at school for the rest of the year so there is also no change to her email address.

Likewise we extend our very best wishes to Ms Harding, our Maths specialist teacher, who gets married next week and wish her and her future husband, Sean, a lifetime of happiness together.

Medications on Yr 6 Camp

Preparations are at the final stages for our Yr 6 Camp and if your child requires medication (prescribed or OTC) on camp, you will need to complete and return a Medical Authority Form (MAF) located on Pulse HERE to Mr Atkins (Head of Outdoor Education) via email at eatkins@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

This form will need to be returned to Mr Atkins by Friday 24 April. Students should not be arriving to camp without a completed MAF if they require medication. Please contact Mr Atkins for any other questions.

Secondary School Musical

Last Saturday, my wife and I enjoyed the spectacular Secondary School Musical performance of The Addams Family. We were in bewildered awe at the incredible talent on stage, in the music pit and working behind the scenes to deliver what felt like a West End or Broadway production.

Of particular note, (as I was gradually working out who was who under the make up!) I was filled with immense pride at seeing so many former Junior School students from Yrs 7-12 shining brightly on stage and obviously loving the experience and the chance to perform.

Congratulations to all of the students and staff involved in providing such a high-quality show over three days to so many of us and what was the highlight of my weekend.

International Day: Tuesday 4 April

Our School community is looking forward to our annual International Day event next Tuesday. Students are encouraged to dress up in either international dress or colours for the day and teachers will have a series of themed lessons during the day.

Thank you to the many parents who will join classrooms to share your own cultural backgrounds and experiences, always an important and insightful part of this day.

International Day

4 April

5 more sleeps to go until we celebrate Redlands International Day. Thank you to the incredible group of parents who have combined ideas and resources to bring together a day that will be filled with culturally diverse activities and fun! We also are deeply appreciative of the army of volunteers helping on the day. Below are some questions that I am sure you are all asking.

What does my child wear?

They wear mufti. Please dress in a way that reflects a culture that your child connects with. It may be a national costume or a splash of colour that represents a national flag of a country.

Are normal activities on after school?

Yes

Will lunchtime Clubs be on?

No

What will they eat?

Please bring normal recess and lunch. There will be no crunch and sip. Lunch and recess orders will be as normal but please take into consideration that we will be offering the children an ‘extra’ treat after they have eaten (More details below about this).

Do they have to bring anything extra?

Yes, please bring your art smock and library bag

Lunchtime Treats

At lunchtime, our K-2 students will have the choice of choosing one (or maybe 2) treats from lunchtime food stalls. Can I please encourage all families to discuss the options below with their children so that they know which one they would like to try next Tuesday.

It is important for our students to know this is not a lunch replacement nor is it compulsory, it is merely a treat. If you are worried about any of these choices due to allergies or other medical reasons, can I please ask you to alert your class teacher that you don’t want your child to participate.

A big thank you to families and communities for providing the following food choices.

Indian Food

Papadams, Samosa, Mathi, Boondi

Chinese Food

Spring rolls

Latin American Snacks

Galletas marias (plain Spanish biscuits) with Dulce de leche (Argentinian caramel)

Fruit and vegetables with Mexican salsa (sweet and sour salsa that includes apricots, prunes, juice, a touch of chili and salt)

American Treats

Chocolate drops

Thank You from OOSH

Year 2 and The Zoo!

This week our Year 2 students visited Taronga Zoo to further investigate Australian animals and their habitats. Thanks to the Year 2 staff and the parent volunteers who made the day so interesting and fun.

Here is what the students had to say;

‘Year 2 were so excited to explore Taronga Park Zoo and we wondered which Australian animals we would see when we arrived. There was a beautiful view across the harbour, and we could hear the chimpanzees greeting each other as we hopped off the bus. Our adventure began by exploring the Australian animals and their habitat. We were able to get really close to the Eastern Grey kangaroos, the quokkas, and the Tasmanian Devils. We observed their different characteristics and their habitats. We woke the Tasmanian Devil up from its sleep and it started running around for us. We meet two adorable dingo pups at the dingo show and we watched Pepper, Diego and Nala, the Californian sea lions while they entertained us with some amazing tricks. During the food and fibre workshop we met George the ringtail possum. He was curled up in a woollen pouch, but he poked his head out to say hello to us. We also learnt how we use plants and animals for food and fibre. We spent the rest of the day exploring the other animal species at the zoo. We even got to see the Meerkats, which is Mrs Breckenridge’s favourite animal. Finally, we walked back up the hill and got on the bus to come back to school. We had the best day ever and now we are busy making our own enclosures for Australian animals.’

Staffing News

Mrs Victoria Roberts, Lucy Hill Librarian, will be taking long service leave next term and will be returning to Redlands in September. Victoria will be spending time with her family and travelling overseas to see her daughter. We wish her well and look forward to hearing all about her adventures on her return.

I know that you will join me in welcoming Mrs Sharron Stokes to Redlands who will be our Lucy Hill librarian in Victoria’s absence. Mrs Stokes is a highly experienced librarian with a passion for inquiry learning and making books come alive through shared reading experiences.

International Day

Tuesday 4 April

International Day is one of the most important days here at Redlands. We are a school of many nationalities and cultures so let’s celebrate that this year without any restrictions.

This year we would like to ask you, our international community to help us organise a wonderful day full of activities, food, talks, music, and any other fun activities that you would like to share.

If you are a parent who identifies with another culture, we would love you to join us on 4 April between 9am and 10am to share aspects of your culture with us. Please email me directly or catch me in the hallway to let me know if you are interested in coming along.

Spare Clothes

Please remember that all children need to have spare clothes in their bags please. Spare clothes are helpful not just for toileting accidents, but also for when children my get dirty or wet during play. We do have spare clothes at Redlands House, but our stocks get very quickly depleted when we have water play and the weather is changeable. Any donations of old uniforms are greatly appreciated.

Crunch & Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch

Just a reminder that each child has 3 breaks for food in the preschool each day – Crunch & Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch Can we please ask that these containers are clearly labelled with the child’s name and are placed in the appropriate location. Often staff are spending a great deal of time sorting through lunch boxes to find morning tea for the children. Please ensure each of the items is placed in the correct location at the beginning of the day.

Crunch & Sip: ‘Crunch & Sip’ is a break during class time when the children can refuel on a fruit or vegetable snack only (that is packed in addition to Morning Tea and Lunch) and rehydrate with water. The ‘Crunch & Sip’ break gives children the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit that might otherwise be left in their lunchbox. Children are also more likely to eat their fruit or vegetables and drink their water if their friends and peers are all doing it too! We ask that you provide this snack in a separately labeled container or zip-lock bag and place it in the basket on the sink in the classroom storeroom. Drink bottles will also be kept in here and the children will be able to refill their bottles at the sink as they need.

Morning Tea and Lunch are stored in separate containers in the fridge. Each class has a fridge door to open. Morning Tea containers are kept in the class basket in the fridge and Lunch boxes and stored on the shelf.

Please remember that we are an Allergy Friendly Centre (i.e. allergy aware) and have a number of children with serious allergies. Therefore, we ask that any food your child brings to Preschool does not contain nuts or traces of nuts or shellfish. We have a number of resources containing nutritious and well-balanced lunch box ideas available in our parent library in the foyer for inspiration.

Easter Eggs

As a reminder to our community, although children giving each other chocolate eggs at school is a lovely idea, we ask that no chocolate eggs or sweets be brought to school. This is to ensure the health and safety of all our students and avoid the sadness associated with missing out or losing a gift. In lieu, hand-made cards would be welcomed.

Secondary Sport

It is great that we are able to get back out on the fields and courts this weekend to participate in some Winter Sport trials, we are thankful that we able to play some trials before the holidays. A reminder that this weekend students need to wear their Redlands Sports uniform (sport specific uniform) which is available to purchase from the Uniform Shop. Students who do not have the correct uniform will not take the court/field.

The draws for the upcoming Winter season will be posted on Redlands Pulse in the coming weeks, parents are reminded that sport takes place on Saturday there will be sport on every Saturday during Term 2 (not including the Long Weekend) with game times varying depending on who and where teams are playing. Redlands Sports takes priority over all club sport commitments.

‘I have never come across a successful person, team or high performing organisation that maintained average standards. Only those who will commit themselves to excellence succeed in the long term. High standards aren’t for everyone, but excellence also isn’t for everyone’

IPSHA Cross Country Runners

Good luck to the following Redlands students who are competing at the IPSHA Cross Country Carnival this week at The Kings School at Parramatta. It is the toughest course that IPSHA have constructed in a long time and a unique opportunity for our runners to participate in this event against schools such as Pymble, St Catherines, MLC, Knox, Barker, Mosman Prep, Ascham, Trinity, Scots and many more.

Charlotte Roy , Reina Sabharwal, Rafael Mascheroni, Amelia Svensson, Kirrily Stone, Edward Grinham, Piper Aubin, Ella Liira, Kyler Simpson and Aidan Donnelly.

Compulsory Representative Winter Sport Trials

Well done to those students who were involved in our Winter Sport trials. They have completed 3 sessions (Yr 5 students have had 2 due to camp) and there is a final session next week on the 5 April. Team lists will be available for viewing online on the evening of the 5 April. Season commences Week 1, Term 2, Saturday 29 April.

Updated Sport Calendar

The updated sport calendar for Term 2 onwards  is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2023 JS Sport Calendar

Representative Sport Team Lists

To view Representative Sport team lists and Non Rep sport lists please select the TEAM LISTS quick link icon that can be found on the Junior School Sport pages on Pulse. Here you will see instructions on how to view your child’s sport through your Redlands App. Leading into Term 2, all Redlands Sport Activities will be through Pulse and the Redlands App.  Here you can see all activities, teams and groups your child is part of, all scheduled lessons and locations and receive instant push notifications for any changes or cancellations. There may be occasions where host schools change a time or location midweek and when this occurs the draw will be updated and you will receive an automatic notification from the Redlands App, same process will take place for Wet Weather.

Please remember that our Redlands Representative teams are fluid, meaning teams may change week to week depending on 3 main criteria: Ability, Attendance and Attitude. Any team movements will be discussed with your child by their coach. Given that we play in a graded competition against schools where most of the time have more teams than Redlands, we aim to provide the most competitive team for that round.

There may be times where your child is asked to also fill in on a second game when absences are high. Students are reminded to check their team lists on the APP each Thursday for any changes in preparation for their Saturday game.

Cross Country Carnival

The Cross Country Carnival which will now take place on Monday 8 May for all Junior School students. The carnival will be held at Tunks Park, Cammeray.

We will have full access to the entire Tunks Park fields and students will enjoy an open and flat running course. Each student will complete the course twice (two laps) to achieve 2.5km total distance.

Our aim is for this to be a fun experience for everyone on the day but also provide a great experience and challenge for those aiming to progress to HICES and CIS where the courses present many different challenges.

Upon arrival at the venues students in each grade will be divided into two groups (Boys Championship Race and a Girls Championship Race) which will run as separate events.

After the event the result will be sorted into age groups with the top 5 runners in boys and the top 5 runners in girls in each age group will make up the Redlands team that will participate at the HICES Carnival on the 23 May.

Please refer to our Cross-Country Carnival page on Pulse for all information relating to our 3rd major carnival this year.

This event was a great way to break the ice for Dante’s upcoming trip to Tampa, Florida for the Finals of the Youth America Grand Prix, where he will be performing the James solo from La Sylphide, coached by Martin James. Martin, a former principal dancer with Royal New Zealand Ballet, English National Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet, is the perfect mentor as he danced this role on the world stage and directed the Australian Ballet Company Production in 2013.  Dante’s Contemporary solo has been created by award winning Choreographer Paul Malek, Artistic Director of Transit Dance. We wish him the very best for this incredible experience.

My name is Alyssa Tinetti and I am Dance Captain for 2023. I am excited to introduce our new initiative, “Students of the Month”

What is Students of the Month?

  • ‘Students of the Month’ is a new initiative organised by your dance captain, Alyssa Tinetti. This initiative will recognise students in Year Group categories who have been working really hard during dance classes and have been benefiting the dance community.

How are the students determined?

  • The students are selected through conversations with teachers, recommendations from fellow students, and the criteria:
    • Effort in class
    • Behaviour in class
    • Punctuality and attendance
    • Behaviour within the dance community

What do Students of the Month receive?

  • This award is an opportunity for students to be recognised by staff and students in the Academy, as well as celebrated with the wider Redlands community.
  • The students will be celebrated in Note Day, as well as have their name and photo featured on the pin board outside of the dance office in Parkes Hall.
  • Additionally, each student’s Year Advisor will be contacted about the student’s achievement.

Students of the Month for April

Years 7-8

Year 7 student Phoebe Sun

Phoebe Sun (Year 7)
Phoebe Sun (Year 7)

Phoebe Sun joined Redlands at the start of this year, and has worked very hard in her classes. Phoebe is a focused student who gives every class 110%.

Recently, Phoebe Sun made her Redlands performance debut in The Addams Family Musical. Phoebe attended every rehearsal with a smile on her face, and remembered all her choreography. She was definitely a an important member of the dance ensemble, which is impressive considering she was the only Year 7 student selected for this group.

We can’t wait to see what Phoebe does in her future with Redlands!

Years 9-10

Year 9 student Dante Minassian!

Dante Minassian (Year 9)
Dante Minassian (Year 9)

Dante Minassian has flourished in the Redlands community, working hard in every class he has. Dante’s hard-working mindset and never-say-never attitude, as well as his attention in class, has helped him become an amazing dancer.

This month, Dante will represent Australia and Redlands at the YAGP Finals in Tampa, Florida. The Youth American Grand Prix international ballet competition is a renowned competition for ballet dancers, and Dante’s participation in the Finals is an incredible achievement.

We wish Dante all the best for this competition and all future endeavours!

Years 11-12

Year 12 student Josie Simpson!

Josie Simpson (Year 12)
Josie Simpson (Year 12)

You may know Josie from being an amazing School Captain, but she has also been a committed member of the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy since 2018.

This year, Josie has worked incredibly hard – balancing her School Captain duties, Year 12 schoolwork while still attending RAD ballet classes twice a week and SJPG rehearsals. Josie’s positive attitude is invaluable to the dance community; she always makes everyone feel included and is the perfect role model for younger students.

Thank you, Josie, for being so amazing!

And those are our three students of the month! Make sure you congratulate them when you see them, and check out their photos on the dance board!

Music

There is no greater joy than seeing students discover how Music can profoundly impact their lives for the better. Be it our earliest learners in Redlands House who can’t fake their sparkling eyes and beaming smiles – singing and dance with reckless joy; or our senior-most students as they bravely start to trust their musical instincts and share with others – finding immense reward in the risk taken, and being reassured that their voice, their sound is so very needed in the musical landscape.

It has been my great honour to serve the Redlands community over nearly seven years with countless Redlands students whose music has deeply moved and inspired me in that time. As Sean Corcoran has announced in his section of Note Day today, Term 3 will see a transition of leadership for our great department, and students within the Redlands Music program can be assured of the extraordinary team of world-class specialists we have at Redlands who are committed to seeing them reach their fullest potential, and finish their Redlands race strong. The Music Department’s dedication to our learners is as robust as ever to ensure that our students are positioned for ‘life readiness’ and indeed ‘industry readiness’. Let’s go Term 2!

Next term, as well as our Yr 12s bringing their performances and projects to completion standard, we are preparing for another magnificent SENIOR MUSIC FESTIVAL set to take place on Friday 16 June 2023. The Yr 12 Finale is always a spectacle, and our rehearsals kicked off with a hilarious bang last night! We can’t wait to see our graduating class in full flight on this night!

Wishing all our students and families well as we bring Term 1 to a happy end, in readiness for a soul-nourishing Easter break and a great Term 2 to come.

Amy Richardson
Director of Music P-12
