Shining Light on Student Voice

Student voice matters. Last year it was something that I said I was passionate about in my profile in Redlands Life magazine. Why? For me, student voice is important because it brings with it so many benefits to our students as learners and citizens in a global community. In our classrooms, it plays a crucial role in creating and maintaining a positive learning environment and culture. We also know that one of the benefits of listening to and acting on student voice is that it increases levels of student engagement. On a broader level, there is a burgeoning body of educational research that tells us that there is a high level of correlation between schools that have strong levels of student voice and healthy levels of student wellbeing.

That’s why at Redlands we’ve made increasing student voice a school-wide priority.

Fortunately, we already have a strong foundation on which to build student voice. While the School’s motto Luceat Lux Vestra, or let your light shine, certainly embodies the esprit de corps of student voice, in more recent years it has successfully been captured in the Redlands Learning Platform or RLP. As our teaching and learning framework, the RLP clearly articulates our educational philosophy which is to develop each student’s unique potential whilst also acquiring distinctive learner attributes and dispositions so that our students become active and life-ready citizens in today’s increasingly complex global world. At its core, our RLP also recognises the value of what each student brings to their learning as well as the importance of enabling each student’s voice.

In the past six months, one way that we’ve begun increasing our focus on student voice is through our Student Voice Surveys. The survey, which was completed by all students from Yrs 5-12, allowed staff to listen to what our students had to say about their learning. Teachers and teams have reflected on what our students said and have been developing strategies, some individually, others collectively within their Year Groups and Departments to improve aspects of our classroom practice. Some have been focusing on creating more engaging openings to classroom lessons. Some have been developing better and more effective ways to share feedback with their students. And still, others have been taking a more deliberate and purposeful approach to closing their lessons so that students grasp core concepts and develop a mastery of the content. It has been exciting to see the positive impact that turning up the dial on student voice is beginning to have for our students.

Of course, there are many other ways we are enacting student voice. Ms Deb Thomas from Redlands House and Ms Trudi Hepers from Yr 2, who are part of a whole school Student Voice Project team, are using picturebooks such as The World Needs Your Voice: Say Something and Cay and Adlee Find Their Voice in their classrooms to increase student awareness of voice and agency. And a fortnight ago our Principal, Mr Webber noted the agency and inspiring leadership of our students involved in the Junior and Secondary School assemblies. On a personal note, for me, one of the most authentic and powerful examples of student voice at Redlands occurred in 2020 when many of our Yr 12 students took to one knee to demonstrate their support of the Black Lives Matter following the killing of George Floyd.

This year I’m looking forward to listening to and acting on what our students are telling us about what matters – whether it be in our classrooms, our playgrounds, our performance spaces, our sports fields or more broadly within the Redlands community. Student voice can be a powerful enabler of deep learning and student wellbeing – not just at school but at home too.

This is Redlands

Redlands is proud of our warm, diverse and inclusive school community. Our local community is enriched by those from interstate and overseas, with more than 50 countries represented in our student cohort. We are an international school for Australian families and an Australian school for international families.

Redlands cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. This week the School celebrated Harmony Week, an annual event that encourages people to share the message that ‘everyone belongs’. There was a wide range of activities, learning experiences and events across all campuses, commencing with a whole school assembly early in the week. It was inspiring to hear the personal stories of our students, teachers and parents interwoven within the week, further enhancing this wonderful learning opportunity for all.

Tickets are now on sale for the Redlands Arts Luncheon, to be held on Wednesday 26 May from 11.30am to 3.00pm at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. It will be lovely to once again gather face-to-face as a community in celebration of the long history of Performing and Visual Arts at Redlands.  Proceeds raised from this unique and special event will be directed to the Belinda Oxley Scholarship in acknowledgment of her dedication to Redlands and passion for education. With limited seating available, this will be a popular event that sells out fast. Group bookings for tables of 10 are already a popular choice. For further information and to purchase tickets please click here.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Past Students on Belinda’s Legacy

I had a chance to reflect on Belinda’s journey with Redlanders Spencer and Howard Goodsall who remembered Miss Oxley fondly. They remember weekly art classes and have special memories of painting Monet’s Japanese Bridge and The Great Wave

A highlight for them both was learning about Greek mythology which really resonated with them when they visited Athens in 2013 and were able to name the Greek God statues at the Acropolis.

They remember Miss Oxley reading aloud to them many Tashi books and also The Tale of Despereaux

In 2006 this family won a silent auction prize at the Redlands Ball which was a drawing by Belinda. She drew all the siblings’ faces from the photos provided.

Redlanders Parents’ Morning Tea

Last Friday we were delighted to welcome our Redlander parents and grandparents to a special morning tea in the Redlands Learning Hub. Alumni from the Class of 1953 to the Class of 2000 had a special opportunity to meet each other, share their Redlands school stories and life journeys, hear from Principal Stephen Webber and see how the Redlands spirit, values and innovative culture lives on.

Redlander Guest Speaker at Harmony Day

This week we welcomed Redlander Kate Kesby (Lawless, Class of 1993 and current Redlands parent) back to Redlands to speak to students for Harmony Day. Kate’s inspirational speech opened with her quoting American Sociologist Micheal Kimmel, “Privilege is invisible to those who have it, but discussion has continually served as an eye-opener”. Kate discussed how harmony is important and valuable in the workplace and how bringing one authentic self is necessary and vital to cultural change. Redlands Harmony Day Assembly can be viewed here.

Head of Secondary School

It’s been another week teeming with learning and activities on the Senior Campus. It’s also been teeming with rain. Thankfully, our beautiful new building, the Redlands Learning Hub, provides a welcome sanctuary for students on days when they’d rather be inside. When the sun came out yesterday, the students re-emerged from the Hub, and embraced the light and the sunshine.

It was wonderful this afternoon to be able to hold Theatresports on the Fahl Garden, amid the beautiful sunshine. Our participating students were cheered on by supportive parents and teachers, demonstrating their dramatic skill, quick thinking skills, creativity and capacity for fun. It was a wonderful afternoon and the adults were happy to be together, on campus after so long, and in celebration of the students. A big thank you to our Arts Captains and the entire Drama Department for their efforts. Bravo!

Assessments

As mentioned last week, many students spent this week engaged in assessment preparation and delivery. Some have started the feedback process and are reviewing their goals set early in Term 1. Whilst it has been a long term, it is important to take stock prior to the holidays, to reflect on the many learnings and to allow space to move forward into Term 2. One student remarked to me this week that she felt worried after her assessment; she didn’t feel she had performed as well as she could have, she couldn’t get the words out and left the test feeling disheartened. This is a very typical way to feel post-assessment, especially as tiredness from the term sets in. As teachers, we know that the reflection students engage in after the assessment is as important as the task itself. For students, asking questions about how they feel, their thinking, and how they coped under pressure, is an important part of self-management and self-awareness. Being able to respond to these questions, without self-judgement is equally as important. Just because we are feeling something, doesn’t mean we have to own that feeling. We can notice it, and simply let it go. Feeling let down, disheartened or worried after an assessment is normal for students, but it is something they shouldn’t hold on to, for too long. We really appreciate that as parents, you will encourage your children to discuss and unpack their assessments. We also appreciate that you can support them to move on, or move forward so that any negative feelings or self-doubt can dissipate. As I said last week, the act of engaging with an assessment is learning in and of itself. Sitting with something – a feeling, a thought, an experience – is fundamental to being a learner, but so is letting go, and breathing space into one’s understanding of things. Over the next week at school, we look forward to easing the students into the holiday period, so they can breathe some space into their lives and take time to reflect and discern the way forward for Term 2. We will end the term in face-to-face assemblies where the students will both reflect and look forward. Next week, I anticipate sharing some of their reflections with you.

Chaplain

Easter is a festival of light, peace and victory over death. The Christian’s most important festival of the year is Easter, the time to celebrate the historical event of a crucified Jesus and the empty tomb. Many people approach the resurrection as a fairytale or myth but this is not the type of writing of the gospels nor is it what the evidence indicates. Yr 8 this week is examining the evidence for the resurrection.

I have been fascinated to hear of two public figures who have openly spoken of their scepticism of the resurrection of Jesus. One was Dr Francis Collins who has double doctorates in Physical Chemistry and Medicine and is famous for his genetic research. He was raised as an atheist but came to the point in his adult life of wanting to examine the evidence for God generally and Jesus specifically. He had expected to be confirmed in his atheism but was convinced to the contrary, that Jesus’ death and resurrection were supported by the evidence. After such an investigation, he became a follower of Jesus.

The second public figure is the children’s author Suzanne McFarlane. She likewise was an atheist and frankly felt that the Christian faith lacked intellectual rigour and historical accuracy. However, her investigation led her unexpectedly to see the Christian faith as true and intellectually solid. She had not anticipated this outcome but found her world changed for the better after this research and discovering an intimacy with Jesus.

While the historical aspects are crucial, the spiritual implications are potent.

The idea of an innocent sacrificing because of love inspires us to sacrificial love for others. Death being overcome, grief turned to joy, darkness to light is a principle of hope that is reassuring. The assurance that death does not have the last word and that death can be a door to a renewed world addresses the pain of grief giving hope for more. Fear of death disintegrates in the face of the empty tomb of Jesus. The wonder of restoration and forgiveness in a world where we each fail brings peace. This brings better relationships as we know that forgiveness is better than vengeance.

Such lessons of peace, love, joy and hope make Easter a time of deep renewal and restoration of relationships. So, my prayer for our community is that this Easter you will take time to restore relationships, seek and give forgiveness, show acts of sacrificial love and delight in the joy of those relationships. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus that offers a new relationship with God, full of peace, love, joy and hope.

God Bless

Market Day – Message from Ms Vyvian Kang

Congratulations to all students on a successful Market Day and thank you to all the effort and support put in from every student, family and staff member across the School.

Students made a total ‘Net Profit’ of $2002, which will be donated to the Yothu Yindi Foundation in Arnhem Land, prior to their visit this year. The organisation is working to achieve sustainable improvement of the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of Yolngu and other Indigenous Australians. The HSIE department collected around $1072 worth of  ‘company tax’, ‘rent’ and ‘utility fees’ from each business, which will be donated to the Redlands Scholarship Fund.

The Commerce Market Day provided Yr 9 students with an opportunity to apply the content learned in the Commerce topic ‘Running a Business’ into the practical task of managing market day stalls. Students gained exposure to the four key business functions of Marketing, Operations, HR and Finance while planning and executing their own small businesses in groups. Students have applied their knowledge of promoting and selling, financial planning and risk management while selling a wide and delicious range of products from pizza and nachos to crepes and spiders.

Peer Support

We have had the Yr 11 Peer Support Leaders working with the cohort throughout the term. It is absolutely wonderful to see how well our senior students are working with the Yr 7 cohort.

Yr 7 Science

Yr 7 Science designed and wrote their own experiment on ‘What affects how fast a sugar cube dissolves?’ and then carried it out collecting the data which they then presented in a graph.

JUNIOR SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

One Year On

It is exactly a year to the day that Redlands made the necessary decision to move to remote learning as the word lockdown, a noun that has come to define so many lives across the world, became part of our everyday vernacular. As we now go about our day-to-day lives, that time seems like a lifetime ago for us at Redlands and in Australia but like many in our community, I have family and friends overseas who are still entrenched in both a state of lockdown and remote learning.

There has been much for us to continue to be thankful for this term as we have been increasingly able to return to aspects of normalcy and in the past week, it has been delightful for teachers to have met parents in person for learning review meetings, although the Zoom option certainly looked more appealing last Thursday night as the stormy weather arrived in Sydney! Parents are continuing to be encouraged to come on to campus after school to collect your children as we hope this will also help families to reconnect whilst simultaneously alleviating the traffic at the end of the day.

After three terms of using Zoom, another joy this term has been the ability to gather and connect in person for Junior School assemblies and there was added joy this week as the next phase of this gathering allowed our students to collectively sing both the National Anthem and our School Song, something that we have not done for over a year. For many of our students who have joined us in the last 18 months, it was also their first opportunity to sing our School Song which was memorable.

Term 1 Representative Sport Round-up

The incessant rain of the last few days literally put a dampener on all of our outdoor final interschool sporting fixtures for Term 1 but our coed Basketball teams were able to play their final games of Term 1 with great determination and skill.

Redlands is the only independent school in Sydney that competes in both the independent girls’ schools sporting competition as well as the boys’ competition. For many years, we have very successfully entered coed teams in the boys’ schools’ seasonal competition and in recent years, we have been permitted to enter girls-only teams in the termly girls’ schools’ competitions. This gives our girls, in particular, a greater range of representative sports opportunities as I have also seen with my own daughters who have both enjoyed playing in girls-only teams as well as coed teams and the opportunity and experience of playing with and against boys.

Redlands was one of the inaugural schools to introduce AFL in independent schools for boys and in the last three years, we have led the introduction of girls’ AFL now as a primary-aged school sport option with a degree of success, both in terms of numbers and as the current holders of the regional Paul Kelly Cup title for both girls and boys.

As part of the Independent Schools Heads’ Sport Committee for the last few years, in particular, I have been part of the evolving growth of girls’ sport with representative sport introduced as an option for girls in Yr 3 at independent girls’ schools (we have always provided this at Redlands) even though there had been a boys’ competition for Yr 3 boys.

With the redevelopment of our oval, we have now become a host venue for the independent girls’ school Football competition and it has been wonderful to see our girls in Yrs 3-6 enjoy playing at ‘home’ and for us to also be able to welcome families back on campus to support their children and the teams too who have had stellar seasons, as recently recognised by Mr Dunne in our Junior School assembly.

Another strategic focus for the Sports department has been to recruit high-quality female coaches and referees for all of our sports to inspire our boys and girls, which we see as a vital component of growing sport at Redlands, particularly for our girls. This ratio is now close to 50:50 across our range of representative sports and in recent years, we have been excited to also add Redlands Alumni to our coaching team, some of whom started playing team sport in the Junior School.

From Yr 7 onwards, the school sporting pathway places girls and boys separately which is more age-appropriate and having seen the photo of our successful Girls’ Firsts Basketball team after winning the Division 1 ISA competition last week, it was heartening to see more than half of the team began their school representative journey with us in the Junior School. Indeed, some of this team have been ‘reliving their younger days’ by spending some lunch times shooting hoops with our Junior School students.

Yesterday saw the start of our Winter Sport season and I look forward to cheering on these teams next term too.

International Day

As you will be aware, Redlands will once again celebrate International Day next Tuesday, a day for our community of 51 different nationalities to join together to celebrate both our rich, cultural diversity and international awareness. The event aligns with similar events on the Senior Campus and year groups will be incorporating international perspectives in curriculum lessons. With the recent changes, teachers will also reach out to parents to encourage opportunities for parents to share their global knowledge and experiences.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is underway, encouraging all students to read widely and to be part of a wonderful literary opportunity. It is now open online for your children to record what they are reading and student usernames and passwords have been handed out in Library lessons over the past fortnight. The students have taken a photo of their username and password with their iPads and also have a copy glued into their Student Planner. All the students have been shown how to log in and enter a book and we look forward to supporting this annual reading challenge! If you have any questions, please contact the Junior School Library via email or by popping in, making sure you use the QR code to scan in at Reception.

Year 5 Camp – Postponed

There was much despondency (and maybe a tiny bit of relief!) as our scheduled Yr 5 Camp to the Southern Highlands had to be cancelled this week with the treacherous weather conditions we have been experiencing across NSW. We look forward to confirming the rearranged dates for this trip and also look forward to Yrs 3, 4 and 6 heading off on their respective camps next term too. More importantly, I hope that our community and your extended families in regional NSW have not been too impacted by the floods.

Bandaged Bear Fundraiser

As if by magic, the sunshine came out perfectly for lunch last Friday to allow our Preschool – Yr 6 buddy classes to meet for lunch and play in what was a joyous event for the students. It was delightful to see Yr 6 students playing in the sandpit with Preschool students and students of all ages playing together around the Campus. Collectively, we were thrilled to raise $1,366 for the Bandaged Bear charity supporting The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Debating

Both our Yr 5 and Yr 6 Debating teams have continued to make excellent progress this term and showed great skill and development in winning both again last Friday on the topic ‘That we should have a panel of Yr 6 students who decide on the punishment for breaking school rules’. The adjudicators particularly praised the teams for their sophisticated arguments, as well as not needing their prompt cards as much.

Redlands Arts Luncheon

Next term, we are delighted to host the Redlands Arts Luncheon on Wednesday 26 May at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli in celebration of the long history of Creative Arts education at Redlands that includes Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Dance and Design and Technology. This Luncheon is open to all Redlands parents and the wider community and provides a lovely opportunity to once again gather face-to-face as a community in celebration of the Creative Arts at our School.

With limited seating, this will be a popular event that sells out fast. Group bookings for tables of 10 are already a popular choice.

PREP SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

International Day

Redlands will be celebrating International Day next Tuesday. All our students are encouraged to wear something or bring something that either reflects their own cultural identity or from a culture that they can relate to or find interesting. The idea of the day is to celebrate the cultural diversity that makes Redlands such a special place full of families from all over the world.

If you would like to share something culturally unique with the students, please come and have a conversation with me or the classroom teacher. Due to COVID guidelines, unfortunately, no food will be allowed to be shared on this day but we strongly encourage sharing art, music or traditional dress.

Term 2 Uniforms

Students will return to school in Term 2 in their winter uniforms. Please refer to the Student Planner for full winter uniform explanation or to Redlands Pulse. It is really important to ensure that blazers are worn every day in winter and that black school shoes are worn to school. Can I please ask families to use blue hair ribbons and scrunchies and also girls are to only wear plain studs or sleepers with no other jewellery please. This can be worn on weekends or after school.

If your child has lost a piece of clothing, lunch box or drink bottle, please check the Lost Property cupboard by the end of term. The leftover items will donated to the second hand clothing uniform sale.

Redlands Arts Luncheon

We are delighted to host the Redlands Arts Luncheon in celebration of the long history of Creative Arts education at Redlands that includes Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Dance and Design & Technology. For further information and to purchase tickets please click here.

Part of this Luncheon will be the launch of the Belinda Oxley Scholarship, a means-tested scholarship. Belinda was a much-loved teacher at Redlands who influenced so many students in the pursuit of the Arts, and more closely the Visual Arts. The Prep School has been asked to participate in a Design a Card Competition to support the Scholarship fundraising. Our staff have been working on their designs in class but we would love any families to also participate in this competition at home. If selected, this artwork will be featured in a special pack of ten blank ‘All Occasion’ cards. These cards will go on sale in Term 3 and all proceeds from the cards’ sale will support the Belinda Oxley Scholarship.

For your artwork to be considered, please consider the following criteria:

  • Artworks must be created on one of the following sizes – A3, A4, A5 or A6. We encourage the use of the entire surface of the paper or canvas.
  • Use of any mixture of art mediums or materials such as acrylic paint, watercolour, coloured markers, ink, oil pastels, crayons, prints, mixed media, paper collage or digital art.
  • Please ensure the vibrancy, intensity and saturation of the material (vibrancy, intensity and saturation may be lost in the scanning or reproduction of the artwork).
  • As the cards will be used for ‘all occasions’, we encourage students to consider themes such as (but not limited to):
    • Landscapes
    • Animals
    • Floral and botanical images or design
    • Still life (scenes of everyday life)
    • Abstract or Modern Art
    • Geometric patterns and shapes
  • When planning your artwork, consider the reason how and why these cards will be used (ie: Thank you, Well Wishes, Sympathy, Apology, Get Better Soon etc)
  • Consider the artwork’s composition, colour, negative space, focal points etc.
  • A previously created artwork may be submitted.

All submissions must be received by the Junior or Preparatory School office by Wednesday 21 April (Term 2, Week 1). Artwork selection will take place on Thursday 22 April. Selected artworks will be announced in the following week’s Note Day and all artworks will be featured on Redlands Pulse in Term 2.

Students who have their artwork selected will receive a free pack of cards and surprise gift!

By submitting an artwork, you are consenting to its use in a fundraising activity. Please note that Redlands may alter, edit or embellish any submitted artwork to fit the design requirements of the card. All artworks will be returned to students after the selection process.

Library Family Borrowing

Thank you to all families who continue to borrow books from the Library with their canvas bags. I am happy to announce that we will return to face to face borrowing in Term 2. I do ask that we continue to adhere to social distancing and using hand sanitiser when entering the Library.

International Day Celebrations

On Tuesday 30 March, Redlands will be celebrating International Day along with the rest of the Junior Campus. Students are invited to wear any costume or clothing of their choice, that reflects their family heritage, country or culture. A reminder that closed-in shoes and sun-safe clothes are required.

Easter Eggs

As a reminder to our community, although children giving each other chocolate eggs at school is a lovely idea, we ask that no chocolate eggs or sweets be brought to school. This is to ensure the health and safety of all our students and avoid the sadness associated with missing out or losing a gift. In lieu, cards (especially hand-made cards if possible) would be welcomed.

Winter Uniform for Term 2

A reminder to families that as we enter Term 2, it is time for the children to wear their Winter uniform.

For Redlands House children, this means a long sleeve shirt, fleece vest or fleece jumper. For girls opting to wear tights under their skort, please make sure they are navy blue. Please also remember that the children will still require a hat each day.

Bandaged Bear Day

Last Friday we celebrated Bandaged Bear Day. Our teddy bear picnic helps sick children from all over NSW who are treated at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Our gold coin donation helps fund lifesaving equipment and vital research into childhood diseases. Although the weather wasn’t the best, we all really enjoyed this special day. Orange Class and Transition Gold had visits from their buddies in the Junior School.

Mouthguards

There will be a representative from ProFit Mouthguards at the school next week, Wednesday 31 March. ProFit mouthguards are professionally fitted onsite using dental moulds and offer protection for teeth and gums whilst also reducing the severity of concussions caused by contact sports.

For any student wishing to be fitted, please contact Mr Jack Gooding directly and complete the Mouthguard form.

Mouthguards are recommended for the following Winter Representative Sports at Redlands: Hockey, Football, AFL and Rugby.

Tennis

It has been a slow start to the Winter Tennis season with trials being hampered by the wet weather. Trials will continue as planned this week. Communication will be sent directly to those required on Saturday for trials. Congratulations to our Summer Tennis 1sts who will be playing in the Tennis Northern Beaches Premier League 2 final this weekend. Just a reminder, wet weather announcements can be found on Twitter, @RedlandsSport. If a student is absent from training, an email must be sent directly to Eliza Peirce explaining the absence. Winter Representative Sport Trials

With Yr 5 camp postponed we were able to commence our Winter Sport trials for all grades on Wednesday in beautiful conditions. With a quick turnaround from Basketball, Tennis, Girls Football to Rugby, Hockey, Netball and Mixed Football, the students seem as excited as our coaching staff to get going. The second winter sport trial session takes place this Saturday all on the Junior Campus at various staggered times.

This is compulsory for all students to attend who have nominated a representative sport (Saturday sport) for Winter. If your child is unable to make it, please complete the Sport absence form. Please note that students not in attendance for the second trial will be listed as ‘Yet to Trial’ in the lower team on the team lists that will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse on Saturday afternoon. Once we recommence our Winter season in Week 1 of Term 2, these absentees can be assessed over that week in both training and match and graded appropriately.

Athletics Carnival

The program for the Athletics Carnival scheduled for Wednesday 31 March is now available for viewing here. Please note the 1500m event is an open event but I would suggest only those students who can comfortably handle that distance along with their other events they may be running on the day should run in this event.

All other track events, as well as discus and turbo javelin, can be entered by students on the day.

Parents are welcome to attend but must remain within the grandstand that has been designated for parents and is shown on the venue map in the program. Can you also please decide on pick up procedures on the day, either at the venue at 2.30pm or back at school. More information about this can be found within the program. We are also asking parents who are in attendance to download the Redlands app as this will be used for the advertisement of events on the day.

HICES Football Trials

Congratulations to Nicholas Meagher, Sam Elworthy and Sebastian Gabrielan who were nominated to attend the HICES Football trials next week. They were selected by their Football coaches and our Director of Football based on last year’s performance. We wish them the best of luck in their trials next week

CIS Swimming Championships

Congratulations to all our swimmers who represented HICES last week at the CIS Swimming Championships. This was a selection carnival for the CIS team that will compete at the NSW PSSA Swim. We had our boys and girls relay team who came 7th and 5th respectively in their heats and our individual swimmers had some great swims. While we did not have any Redlands students make it through to NSW PSSA Championships representing CIS, they are to be commended on their efforts and were recognised at this week’s assembly.

Drama and Theatre

Musical “That’s a Wrap”

Our filming is now complete for Grease the Musical, The Movie. This Friday afternoon we celebrate our student’s achievements with our Musical Awards and final speeches by our Yr 12 Captains.

Over 110 members of the Redlands student community from Yrs 7 to 12 were involved in filming this year’s show. Whether the students were on stage, in the band, production crew, hair and makeup crew they gave their very best, learning many new skills and making many strong friendships across Year Groups.

These wonderful experiences could not have taken place without the support and assistance of so many people. Mrs Daley and the Musical staff team would like to thank the parents, especially our departing Yr 12 parents for all their support over many years. We would also like to acknowledge Friends of Drama, especially Tracy Everingham, Lucy Gazzilli and Sue Banfield who contributed in so many ways through this project with the Friends of Drama parent team of volunteers as well as our generous sponsor, People + Culture Strategies, which has enabled our Redlands stars to shine.

A Message from Joydeep Hor our Sponsor of Grease

It is with great pleasure that People + Culture Strategies sponsors this year’s Redlands musical Grease.

PCS was established in July 2010 as a unique law firm that works with domestic and international employers on all aspects of people management, HR and workplace culture with a particular focus on the preventive aspects through audits, coaching, consulting and education.

PCS has been a proud supporter of the arts for several years now having established partnerships with some leading pro-am musical theatre organisations which have brought shows including Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Legally Blonde, Miss Saigon, Into the Woods and many others to theatres in the greater Sydney area.

Redlands has a fine tradition of excellence in the performing arts and this is the third Redlands musical with which PCS has been associated. The School’s achievements in this regard are well-known and we are proud to have a former Redlands Arts Captain Embla Bishop as one of our firm’s Ambassadors.

I commend Joy Daley, the Redlands staff and all the cast and crew who are a part of this show for their tremendous enthusiasm and dedication. I am sure, like many other Redlands parents, Grease was an iconic movie and era-defining story growing up and as such a show we look forward to very much.

Enjoy the show!

Theatresports

This week we were very excited as we welcomed our families back as audiences on site to our Theatresports Competition. Redlands annual Theatresports Competition was held on Wednesday in the Fahl Garden. Special thanks go to Ms Sarah Sparke and Ms Amber Virtue, our wonderful Theatresports coaches, who have been training our teams during Term 1 and organising the event. I would also like to make special mention of the wonderful technical support from Ben Peate, our AV technician, who transformed our beautiful gardens into a fantastic outdoor theatre venue, enabling us to have so many parents onsite to enjoy our hilarious night of improvised theatre. The winning teams were presented with awards by Mrs Daley.

Instrument Insurance

School hired instruments must be included on personal home and contents insurance as Redlands cannot be held responsible for instruments which are lost, stolen or damaged. As all instruments are very fragile, we ask for your assistance in ensuring that students do not let other children play with their instrument, instruments are kept in a safe place and out of extreme temperatures (i.e. hot car) and are not left out of their case when not in use.

Junior Campus Daily Instrument Storage Arrangements

Monday – Strings Program
On a Monday morning, cello (only) students are to bring their instruments for storage in the purpose-built cupboards in the Parkes Building corridor.
