One Year On
It is exactly a year to the day that Redlands made the necessary decision to move to remote learning as the word lockdown, a noun that has come to define so many lives across the world, became part of our everyday vernacular. As we now go about our day-to-day lives, that time seems like a lifetime ago for us at Redlands and in Australia but like many in our community, I have family and friends overseas who are still entrenched in both a state of lockdown and remote learning.
There has been much for us to continue to be thankful for this term as we have been increasingly able to return to aspects of normalcy and in the past week, it has been delightful for teachers to have met parents in person for learning review meetings, although the Zoom option certainly looked more appealing last Thursday night as the stormy weather arrived in Sydney! Parents are continuing to be encouraged to come on to campus after school to collect your children as we hope this will also help families to reconnect whilst simultaneously alleviating the traffic at the end of the day.
After three terms of using Zoom, another joy this term has been the ability to gather and connect in person for Junior School assemblies and there was added joy this week as the next phase of this gathering allowed our students to collectively sing both the National Anthem and our School Song, something that we have not done for over a year. For many of our students who have joined us in the last 18 months, it was also their first opportunity to sing our School Song which was memorable.
Term 1 Representative Sport Round-up
The incessant rain of the last few days literally put a dampener on all of our outdoor final interschool sporting fixtures for Term 1 but our coed Basketball teams were able to play their final games of Term 1 with great determination and skill.
Redlands is the only independent school in Sydney that competes in both the independent girls’ schools sporting competition as well as the boys’ competition. For many years, we have very successfully entered coed teams in the boys’ schools’ seasonal competition and in recent years, we have been permitted to enter girls-only teams in the termly girls’ schools’ competitions. This gives our girls, in particular, a greater range of representative sports opportunities as I have also seen with my own daughters who have both enjoyed playing in girls-only teams as well as coed teams and the opportunity and experience of playing with and against boys.
Redlands was one of the inaugural schools to introduce AFL in independent schools for boys and in the last three years, we have led the introduction of girls’ AFL now as a primary-aged school sport option with a degree of success, both in terms of numbers and as the current holders of the regional Paul Kelly Cup title for both girls and boys.
As part of the Independent Schools Heads’ Sport Committee for the last few years, in particular, I have been part of the evolving growth of girls’ sport with representative sport introduced as an option for girls in Yr 3 at independent girls’ schools (we have always provided this at Redlands) even though there had been a boys’ competition for Yr 3 boys.
With the redevelopment of our oval, we have now become a host venue for the independent girls’ school Football competition and it has been wonderful to see our girls in Yrs 3-6 enjoy playing at ‘home’ and for us to also be able to welcome families back on campus to support their children and the teams too who have had stellar seasons, as recently recognised by Mr Dunne in our Junior School assembly.
Another strategic focus for the Sports department has been to recruit high-quality female coaches and referees for all of our sports to inspire our boys and girls, which we see as a vital component of growing sport at Redlands, particularly for our girls. This ratio is now close to 50:50 across our range of representative sports and in recent years, we have been excited to also add Redlands Alumni to our coaching team, some of whom started playing team sport in the Junior School.
From Yr 7 onwards, the school sporting pathway places girls and boys separately which is more age-appropriate and having seen the photo of our successful Girls’ Firsts Basketball team after winning the Division 1 ISA competition last week, it was heartening to see more than half of the team began their school representative journey with us in the Junior School. Indeed, some of this team have been ‘reliving their younger days’ by spending some lunch times shooting hoops with our Junior School students.
Yesterday saw the start of our Winter Sport season and I look forward to cheering on these teams next term too.
International Day

As you will be aware, Redlands will once again celebrate International Day next Tuesday, a day for our community of 51 different nationalities to join together to celebrate both our rich, cultural diversity and international awareness. The event aligns with similar events on the Senior Campus and year groups will be incorporating international perspectives in curriculum lessons. With the recent changes, teachers will also reach out to parents to encourage opportunities for parents to share their global knowledge and experiences.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is underway, encouraging all students to read widely and to be part of a wonderful literary opportunity. It is now open online for your children to record what they are reading and student usernames and passwords have been handed out in Library lessons over the past fortnight. The students have taken a photo of their username and password with their iPads and also have a copy glued into their Student Planner. All the students have been shown how to log in and enter a book and we look forward to supporting this annual reading challenge! If you have any questions, please contact the Junior School Library via email or by popping in, making sure you use the QR code to scan in at Reception.
Year 5 Camp – Postponed
There was much despondency (and maybe a tiny bit of relief!) as our scheduled Yr 5 Camp to the Southern Highlands had to be cancelled this week with the treacherous weather conditions we have been experiencing across NSW. We look forward to confirming the rearranged dates for this trip and also look forward to Yrs 3, 4 and 6 heading off on their respective camps next term too. More importantly, I hope that our community and your extended families in regional NSW have not been too impacted by the floods.
Bandaged Bear Fundraiser
As if by magic, the sunshine came out perfectly for lunch last Friday to allow our Preschool – Yr 6 buddy classes to meet for lunch and play in what was a joyous event for the students. It was delightful to see Yr 6 students playing in the sandpit with Preschool students and students of all ages playing together around the Campus. Collectively, we were thrilled to raise $1,366 for the Bandaged Bear charity supporting The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Debating
Both our Yr 5 and Yr 6 Debating teams have continued to make excellent progress this term and showed great skill and development in winning both again last Friday on the topic ‘That we should have a panel of Yr 6 students who decide on the punishment for breaking school rules’. The adjudicators particularly praised the teams for their sophisticated arguments, as well as not needing their prompt cards as much.
Redlands Arts Luncheon
Next term, we are delighted to host the Redlands Arts Luncheon on Wednesday 26 May at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli in celebration of the long history of Creative Arts education at Redlands that includes Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Dance and Design and Technology. This Luncheon is open to all Redlands parents and the wider community and provides a lovely opportunity to once again gather face-to-face as a community in celebration of the Creative Arts at our School.
With limited seating, this will be a popular event that sells out fast. Group bookings for tables of 10 are already a popular choice.
