Issue 9 2019 - 28 Mar 2019

From the Principal

On Saturday night I am very much looking forward to attending our annual School Musical, which this year is Strictly Ballroom – The Musical by Baz Lurhmann.

The Musical is one of the highlights in our Performing Arts calendar and I highly recommend it to all Redlands families as a wonderful evening of entertainment. There are still some tickets available for the performances tonight and tomorrow night at The Concourse, Chatswood, which can be booked here

Here is a preview of what our 120 Secondary School students will bring to life on stage.

Strictly BallroomThe Musical tells the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. Students in our Performing Arts program will combine the much-loved film’s heart, comedy and drama with white-hot dance routines, eye-popping sets and costumes and classic chart hits.

This year’s production will feature 60 on-stage performers from Years 7 – 12, including 20 Year 12 students who are veterans of the Redlands Performing Arts program in their final Redlands musical. The principal roles include:

  • Patrick Friedlander (2019 Arts Captain) as Scott;
  • Rebecca Burchett (2019 Theatre Captain) as Fran;
  • Asha Boswarva (2019 Arts Captain) as Mrs Hastings, Scott’s mother;
  • Fraser Clarke (2019 Prefect) as Mr Hastings, Scott’s father; and
  • Poppi Kent (2019 Drama Captain) as Liz Holt, Scott’s previous dance partner.

The action is not just on the stage. Behind the scenes, 61 talented students will also be supporting the cast, including 10 students in the orchestra pit, 35 students in hair and make-up and 16 in the production crew.

Strictly Ballroom – The Musical provides a wonderful opportunity for all students in the Redlands Performing Arts program to showcase their immense talent – both on the stage and behind the scenes.

I wish all of the students, staff and parents who are involved in putting this performance together the very best, and I encourage any who are considering going to this spectacular show to snap up those last tickets.

We look forward to welcoming Redlanders from the Class of 1969 to a tour of the School tomorrow.

Obituary

It is with great sadness we advise of the passing Redlander and accomplished NIDA graduate Amy Longhurst, Class of 1988 on Sunday 21 March. Amy was a most sought-after voiceover artist, a professional singer and the voice behind many iconic brands, working with every major Australian advertising agency and radio network, represented by EM Voices. Amy taught at NIDA, AFTRS and the Sydney Theatre School. Amy had recently committed to working with current Redlands students during National Careers Week in May. Amy will be greatly missed by her close family, many Redlander friends and industry professionals.

Easter House Activities

Today during morning break and lunch, the Heads of House and House Captains organised various Easter themed House competitions to further the House spirit and allow an opportunity for more vertical integration across the Year Groups. Students partook in activities such as Rob the Nest, a Fashion Parade and even the Great Egg and Spoon race (although I didn’t see anyone today matching my egg and spoon race skills from the House promotional video). It was great to see students across the Year Groups sharing in some of these fun activities today.

Yr 9 Market Day

On Monday and Tuesday this week during lunchtime, our Yr 9 Commerce students put both their culinary and marketing expertise to the test for our Yr 9 Market Day lunches. Fondue, pasta, Scottish fudge and Asian dumplings were just a few of the treats being sold in stalls that were set up in the Undercroft. Well done to the Yr 9 students and the teachers who organised this event. No one left the Undercroft hungry!

Musical: Strictly Ballroom

The excitement has well and truly been in the air this week as over 130 students and staff have been in final rehearsals for the Secondary School Musical, Strictly Ballroom, which opens tonight and continues Friday and Saturday evenings at The Concourse in Chatswood. The performing and creative arts continues to flourish at Redlands and I wish everyone involved in the musical all the best over the coming days.

Uniform

We just wanted to update parents on some of our uniform expectations as we move into the cooler months and head into Term 2. Please ensure that students have the proper sized winter uniforms for the beginning of next term. Please note that students are only to wear blazers as an outer garment to and from school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday when they are in their proper school uniform. Students are not to wear fleeces, hoodies, jumpers or track suit tops as outer garments to and from school on these days. While blazers are optional in Terms 1 and 4, all students are required to wear blazers to and from school in Terms 2 and 3.

On Thursdays, students may wear their Sports uniform to and from school. The Sports uniform (as outlined on p. 21 of the Student Planner and on Redlands Pulse) consists of Redlands navy shorts, Redlands navy PE shirt, Redlands track suit (in cooler weather), white socks and sports shoes with non-marking soles. We would also like to clarify that students are able to wear their Redlands fleeces to and from school on Thursdays and as part of their Sports uniform at school, when the weather is cooler. Students are not to wear Redlands hoodies as part of their Sports uniform.

Academic Flags and Learning Management Alerts

I wanted to take a moment to remind parents of the aims and intentions of Academic Flags in Yrs 9-12 and Learning Management Alerts in Yrs 7 and 8. The purpose of this system is to ensure timely and targeted communication between the class teacher, Year Advisor, Tutor and parent to ensure that students do not fall behind academically. This communication is emailed to parents on Friday afternoon to allow students to catch up on any Home Learning or other assignments over the weekend. This system should not be seen as a punishment but rather a support system to empower students to take responsibility for their learning. This system is also seen as a first step to assist students in their learning so that follow up conversations with key people, as well as other systems, can be put into place if students continue to find difficulty meeting academic expectations. We hope this form of proactive communication will assist students in their studies moving forward.

Term 2 Departures

If your children will be leaving Redlands during or at the end of Term 2, could you please provide notice to the Principal (via email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au) by Friday 5 April. As per our Terms and Conditions, any Term 2 departures notified after this date will incur one term’s fees in lieu.

Sports Luncheon

We are very excited to be holding our inaugural Redlands Sports Luncheon, celebrating 120 years of Redlands Sport, on Friday 5 April from 12.00 – 4.00pm at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli.

This Luncheon is open to all Redlands parents and alumni and provides a great opportunity to celebrate the integral value of sport to the Redlands community and its students of the past, present and future.

We are delighted to announce our guest speakers, past Redlands students, who will share their very inspiring journey during this Luncheon, Karyn Gojnich (Davis), Class of 1978 (Olympic Sailor, Redlander and former Redlands parent), Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987 (Olympic Rower), Lachlan Mackay, Class of 2000 (Rugby: Wallaby) and Holly Crawford, Class of 2001 (Olympic Snowboarder).

Mother’s Day Classic – 44 Days To Go

Another reminder to register for the Redlands team on the MDC site. It’s time to get your group together and get training. Run or walk then have a brunch with family to celebrate finishing and contributing to cancer research. Over recent years, Team Redlands has slipped on the leaderboard of competing schools so our honour is at stake! This is a wonderful family-oriented event with categories for serious runners through to fun runners of all ages. Proceeds raised from this event are donated to Breast Cancer Research.

Don’t forget to purchase your Redlands pink caps and a new pink Team Redlands tshirt from the Uniform Shop, all profits going to the MDC. All Redlands winter sports teams are also encouraged to incorporate this event as part of their training and team building.

Register your interest in joining Team Redlands here. You will need to complete the registration process nearly all they way to the payment stage before you can select to join the Redlands team (password = Shine).

Battle of the Bands Friday 4 April

The set list for this exciting event in the Redlands Music calendar has been finalised with bands from both the Junior and Secondary Schools. Again this year, the students travelling to Cambodia will be selling tickets at school in the week before and on the night. Adult tickets $10 and student tickets $5. Students will also be organising the refreshments before the event and during the interval. Lots of Redlands talent will be on display. No need to organise dinner on this night, we have it covered.

Tickets will be on sale next week on both the Senior and Junior Campuses and also at the Box Office table on the night.

Easter Donations – Wesley Edward Eagar Lodge

In support of the Junior School Easter program, we are asking Yr 7 students to make an Easter Egg donation for the community that make use of the Edward Edgar Lodge. This was the first residential facility in Sydney to offer accommodation for both homeless men and women.

Wesley Mission’s motto is todo all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can”. So, we can think of no better way to show the spirit of Easter from our Redlands community this year by sharing in the joy of giving to those struggling with homelessness.

Yr 7 students are encouraged to bring in a Easter Egg donation to the Easter Box in their Tutor sessions.

Students in all other years are also encouraged to bring in donation to the Secondary School Office.

Junior School Reading and Maths Mentoring

This week we have kicked off the mentor training for our Secondary student volunteers who will be committing their time after school every Wednesday throughout Terms 2 and 3. This is a considerable responsibility to support the progress of a Junior School buddy as they develop either their reading or maths skills. In order to be well prepared, our Secondary School volunteers will be completing a tailored training session to make sure that have the necessary skills and awareness to be great buddies. Without their involvement these programs would not be able to run.

Pastoral Care

House spirit is not just for sports carnivals. Teamwork, participation and community are essential elements of the House system. During Tutor Time this week, students were encouraged to sign up and participate in the Easter House Fun Day. This included Rob the Nest, Hat Parade, Egg Hunt and the Egg and Spoon Race. The fun competitions brought a sense of vibrancy to the cohort and will greatly help to boost their spirits among their busy academic studies.

Recommended Hours of Study: Dr Prue Salter

In the months prior to examinations, students will still have homework and assignments to deal with. Keeping that in mind, the recommended amount of regular study for Senior students is about 2-3 hours per day and around 6 hours on the weekend. In the last two weeks before examinations, students will want to increase this amount slightly, both during the week and on weekends. In the holidays, we would expect that weekly personal study hours may increase slightly as more time through the day becomes available. Of course, these are suggested guidelines and the quality of study activities and strategies far out-weighs the time spent on them.

Careers and Universities

From this week onwards, information on universities will be posted on a new platform – Bridge U. All students underwent the training on how to adapt to this new system during Tutor Time in the past two weeks. Please contact Ms Salier directly if any student still has issues using it.

Musical Strictly Ballroom

Our School Musical has always been a fun event with a large cast and loads of great upbeat songs and dance numbers. This year is no exception. Twenty Yr 12s are involved in this production with different roles as cast members, production and props crew or the make-up team. On top of their busy school work schedule, these students have rehearsed every Monday afternoon, Tuesday lunch, Friday afternoon and all day Sunday since the beginning of this year to prepare for the shows this week! Tickets are selling fast, and we hope you will all come along and enjoy the classic romantic comedy Strictly Ballroom.

Student Parking

Students are reminded to park according to the road rules. If there are painted lines on the road, you are not allowed to park over the top of them. If you do, you are in danger of receiving a parking ticket. Please also be mindful to leave a reasonable amount of space in front of or behind your vehicle when you park. We ask all students to be respectful of our local neighbours to not encroach over driveways.

Day of Hope

Wow, what a fantastic and inspiring day with Glen Gerreyn on Monday. Ms Wilson and I were so impressed with how the Year Group responded to Glen’s program and I would like to thank all those students who attended for their wonderful efforts throughout the day. I know how much you all got out of the day and the feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly positive. Glen has a range of books that look great and may be something your child would like to look at purchasing if they are feeling particularly inspired after his workshop.

Good luck to all our Yr 11 students who are involved with the Redlands Musical. Strictly Ballroom is shaping up to be an absolute blast and I am looking forward seeing it on Thursday evening.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

As we get closer to Yr 9 Camp in Week 11, I thought this short article may be of interest to you. It briefly explains the benefits of Camp for both students and teachers; helping to build resilience, independence, teamwork and self-esteem. I know many students feel anxious about attending Camp, but most afterwards remember it as a positive and ‘real-life’ experience.

Camp

Camp runs from Monday 8 to Friday 12 April. This year, medical forms are not required; however, please ensure all medical details on Redlands Pulse are correct and up-to-date. You will also have to provide electronic permission via Redlands Pulse, as you normally would for any excursion.

An additional form (that I have emailed to you) will only need to be completed if your son or daughter experiences asthma, allergies, dietary requirement, diabetes or any other health issue. An Asthma Management form must be completed by any person who suffers from asthma. If any of the Key Questions on the Asthma Management form are answered with Yes, further medical information may be required. If this is the case, the Program Coordinator may request a Medical Advisory Plan to be completed.

The Allergy Management form must be completed for any person who suffers from allergies.

The Dietary Management form must be completed for any person who has a food allergy, intolerance or preference.

Participants with diabetes are required to provide a completed Medical Advisory Plan (MAP). In addition to this, it is a requirement to have an up-to-date management plan/care plan for all students with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, a copy of this must be attached and returned with the MAP.

If you would like to provide any additional medical information for your child, please ask your doctor to complete the Medical Advisory Plan. OEG will use this information to prepare their staff and adjust the program accordingly.

These forms are to be handed in or emailed to me and Tony (rmountain@redlands.nsw.edu.au and tdong@redlands.nsw.edu) by the end of Friday 29 March.

International Day

Tuesday next week is International Day when we celebrate Redlands diverse international community and highlight the cultures of the languages that we teach. Tuesday will be a mufti day and students are encouraged to wear country–themed national dress with House points being awarded for the best traditional outfits. If students do not wish to wear national dress, they are encouraged to wear the colours of their assigned country.

McDouall: Japan
Roseby: Spain and Ancient Rome
Cowper: China
Dumolo: France

They should refer to their Student Planner for guidelines on appropriate mufti day attire. It is expected that students will make a gold coin donation towards UNICEF Change for Good on the day.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Liz Holtheuer who finished 7th in the A final for the U17 Single Scull this week, after winning her Semi Final, in the Australian Rowing Championships. This was an amazing effort, given there were around 70 entries for the event and Liz was competing as a 14 year old.

Market Day

Yr 9 were actively involved in Market Day this week over the course of two days, as part of their Commerce topic Running a Business. All students have been working in small groups throughout the term, to produce a product to sell on the day to staff and students of Redlands. The two days were extremely successful with most products selling out during lunchtime.

Pastoral Care Program

This week the Pastoral Care program have been completing their Approaches to Learning and also beginning some online content from the Burn Bright Pastoral Care day.

Social Awareness Program

This week students are continuing to create a presentation regarding their chosen organisation on gender inequality.

  • Students have revisited conversations around expanding their friendship groups and making new friends, how to navigate iLearn and submit assignments and other key information. Students are encouraged to seek support from their Tutor teachers for additional support with any of these items.
  • The Credit Point Challenge continues for Getting Caught Being Good. There will be a student and Tutor Group winner as well as contributing to House points.
  • Next week students will participate in International Day on Tuesday and the Cross Country Carnival on Thursday. Please ensure permission has been granted for students to attend the Cross Country Carnival.
Announcements and Upcoming Events

Please be reminded that students have access to Assessment Notifications via iLearn two weeks prior to each assessment. Teachers also go through assessment details in class and in Tutor.  Parents have access to Assessment Notifications via the parent portal. Students should ensure they know the details of each assessment and ask their teachers and Tutor for support prior to the due date.
  • Prue Salter’s Yr 7 Study Skills Workshop is being held on Tuesday 2 April at 6.00-7.30pm. A message was sent home last week with further information. She is a fantastic presenter and presents specifically to Yr 7 and Yr 11 students. Students have been introduced to Prue Salter’s Study Skills website and discussed their study environment at home to support learning. Students should have this website saved as a favourite for future use: www.studyskillshandbook.com.au. Username: Redlands, Password: 68results
  • Yr 7 will be participating in a Burn Bright Incursion: Recipe for Success on Monday 8 April. This will be an all day event with activities and discussions around motivation, friendships and more. Burn Bright is an amazing program and we are very fortunate they will be working with our students this term.
  • Learning Management Alerts on Fridays: These emails are sent to parents and students to identify any outstanding work that may be completed over the weekend to help students stay on top of their learning. These alerts are issued after a discussion and reminder from the classroom teacher has already been attempted. These are initiated by the classroom teachers yet sent through the Year Advisor. Please contact the issuing teacher for any subjects specific clarification.
  • This term, there are some exciting writing competitions for students to submit their work for public recognition, publication and cash prizes. The Write4Fun 2019 School Writing Competition is open and accepting submissions of original poetry or short stories from Kindergarten to Yr 12. Entry is free and there are fantastic prizes including $1000 cash ($500 to the applicant and $500 to the school) and a choice of either a $500 Rebel Sports voucher, an Xbox One X or PlayStation 4. Entries for this competition close 5pm Sunday 31 March. We are also pleased to announce that the Stanton Library’s Nan Manefield Young Writer’s Award is accepting poetry or short story submissions from entrants aged 11-18 years. Prizes total over $2000 and all placed entrants receive an invitation to a writing masterclass; submissions close 5pm Friday 12 April. Finally, the Mosman Youth Awards in Literature are also accepting short story and poetry submissions from Yrs K-12, with cash prizes totalling more than $2000 to be won; entries close Friday May 31. These are fantastic opportunities for our students to be recognised and celebrated for their creative writing. For any questions about how to enter, please contact the English Department.
  • The Yr 7 parent get together will be on Thursday 4 April from 7.00-10.30pm in the upstairs Piano Bar at Minskys in Cremorne. Book here.
  • Easter Donations – Wesley Edward Eagar Lodge: In support of the Junior School Easter program, we are asking Yr 7 students to make an Easter Egg donation for the community that make use of the Edward Edgar Lodge.

Yr 5 Camp – Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

“Comfortable being uncomfortable” is an expression I have often shared with students about our aim to help them adopt a growth mindset as they navigate challenges here at Redlands, whether in the context of being a learner or in environments such as on Camp as I saw this week. Unprompted, I was thrilled to hear students using this same phrase in context as I joined Yr 5 Camp on Wednesday which has been the absolute highlight of my week.

Joined by Dean of Students, Mrs Kourakis, we set off before sunrise to meet the students soon after breakfast as they began their first session of outdoor adventures and in the time we spent there, we watched and joined students involved in raft building, canoeing, orienteering, mountain biking, initiative exercises, low ropes, high ropes and the infamous Giant Swing, which I had no chance of escaping from!

It truly is such a joy to leave the everyday environment of our Junior Campus to spend time with each Year Group on camp and as always, I returned from Camp having learnt so much more about so many of the students from joining in activities with them, eating meals with them, helping them set up tents or just kicking a ball around with some of the children during breaks.

New friendships have certainly been made and even after only a couple of days away, the teachers have seen how much closer and more supportive of each other the day groups have become, each of which is comprised of students from each class. Over lunch, a number of students also mentioned to me that they have really enjoyed getting to know some of the other teachers on the trip, which was also great to hear.

In recognising that many of the students eagerly look forward to Camp each year, I also acknowledge that for some, this time away can present certain challenges and parents of those students will also be fully aware of these feelings. However, sometimes, seeing these students happy and thriving in new situations and overcoming obstacles, can be the most rewarding aspect of the trip for me, as was the case again today.

I am grateful for the meticulous planning and preparation of the trip by Yr 5 Coordinator, Ms Francis, Yr 5 Assistant Coordinator, Mrs Benneyworth, and the wonderful team of teachers with them this week and we look forward to welcoming the group back on Friday afternoon at the Murdoch St side of the Campus where there is an extended bus zone.

We have also placed a few photos for you to enjoy and get a feel of the Camp on the Yr 5 page of Redlands Pulse.

Happy Bandaged Bear Day

My youngest daughter woke up last Friday and her first words were, “Happy Bandaged Bear Day!”, and it truly was! It was a joy to see the Junior Campus come together to support the Bandaged Bear Appeal, the charity in its 30th year raising money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. This has been a charity that Redlands has poignantly connected with in recent years and it was heartwarming to see the array of cuddly toys being carried in by students in the morning.

The teddy bears’ picnic with buddy classes enjoying lunch together on the Campus was another wonderfully warm experience for our students to experience with both their buddies and their teddy bears.

As we duly acknowledged in our assembly this week, it was special to see this fundraiser being student-led and driven with Yr 5 students, Stella Cunningham, Zoe Hicks, Chloe Hitchens and Charlie Hoskin, collaborating and planning the event including merchandise sale as well as organising a drawing competition, judged by our Visual Arts teacher, Ms Reinhold.

These days fill me with immense pride and purpose in what we nurture at Redlands and the final total raised of $2,344.15 will make a significant difference to the lives of children and families at their time of greatest need.

International Day – Wednesday 10 April (Week 11)

As per the Junior School calendar, our Junior Campus will celebrate International Day on Wednesday 10 April in the final week of term. This will be a time for our community to join together to celebrate both our rich, cultural diversity and international awareness. The event aligns with similar events in Early Childhood and Year Groups will also be incorporating international perspectives in curriculum lessons.

Teachers will also be contacting parents who may be able to share their knowledge and experiences through a range of activities.

As always, I am sure that the school will be awash with vibrant colour as we celebrate the day with students encouraged to wear national costume or colours from any chosen country on this day with a reminder that enclosed shoes and sun-safe clothes should be worn.

Flexischools Canteen Use

Our online Canteen service has been up and running for almost a year and has proved to be an enormous support for families looking to order snacks or lunch for their children.

As you place orders, please may I remind you to also let your child know if they have either a recess and/or a lunch order? Similarly, a reminder that these orders are made up in the Canteen from where students should collect their orders.

Yr 1 STEAM Day

On Monday, Yr 1 demonstrated their enthusiasm and engagement whilst participating in various interactive activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. Each class alternated amongst diverse lessons taught by expert instructors in their various fields.

Science Mindz Brainplay – students learned about the brain through song, story, games and the use of the most modern Electroencephalographs (EEG’s). Students saw their brain in action and used their mind to control things on a screen. The importance of exercise and healthy food to increase the learning capacity of the brain was also confirmed.

Technology – students were given the opportunity to further explore computational thinking with Ozobots. These programmable robots were used to race their classmates in a mission to Mars.

Engineering – students looked at the concept of force and how it was used to move things from one place to another. After constructing a catapult, students could describe how force affected the motion of a projectile object.

Art with iTeacher – students used their drawing skills to create a virtual garden using the app Explain Everything. Using the iPad, students were able to “fly’ their butterfly between each other’s garden. Through the process of app smashing (using multiple apps to create projects or complete tasks), students delivered a collaborative insect garden.

Kindergarten and Yr 2 are looking forward to their STEAM days, where they too can collaborate and investigate . Thank you to Mrs Shireen Winrow, eLearning Coordinator P-6, who organised and contributed to the activities, and Mrs Fiona Rugg who was active in the administering of the Engineering component on the day.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

Last Friday saw the Junior Campus filled with students and their teddy bears. One very talented mother made a Redlands uniform with backpack for her daughter’s bear. Bandaged Bear Day was another wonderful opportunity for students to socialise with their buddies in various year levels and picnic together for a cause close to the heart of our community. An astonishing $2,344.15 was raised through the generosity of the Redlands community.

Yrs 1 and 2 Clubs Term 2

Prep will once again be using the Trybooking system to organise the registration of your child’s Prep Club for Term 2.  Clubs are taught by class teachers on Wednesday afternoons from 3.00 – 4.00pm for Yr 1 and 2 students only. They are designed to be an hour of fun activity and provide students with an opportunity to mix with friends, made up of both Year Groups. If you would like your child to take part in the Clubs program, please refer to the letter being emailed to families next week which will outline Club and booking information. Clubs will commence in Week 2 (Wednesday 8 May) and finish in Week 8 (Wednesday 19 June).

Sydney Swans Auskick

The Preparatory School are enjoying their second week participating in Auskick. Thanks go to Adrian Carter, for organising this four week coaching program where students will learn the skills of AFL through appropriately modified activities where the emphasis is on fun and participation.

Strings Performance

We are delighted to invite parents of Yr 2 students to Dunnet Hall on Monday 8 April for a Strings performance. This concert will provide an opportunity for the students to showcase their learning this term. The performance will commence at 2.30pm and will run for approximately ten minutes. All parents of Yr 2 students are invited to celebrate in their child’s achievement of Curriculum Strings.

International Day Celebrations

On Wednesday 10 April, Prep will be celebrating International Day. Students may wear any costume or clothing of their choice that reflect another country or culture. A reminder that closed-in shoes and sun-safe clothes are required. The Prep School will be participating in an international dance and cultural incursion, where each Year Group will choose a country to focus on and learn a particular dance.

Easter Hat Parade and Classroom Walk Throughs

On Friday 12 April at 11.30am, Prep classrooms will be open for viewing for parents and caregivers to see some of the wonderful learning that has been taking place already this year. Your children can show you their journals, discuss the displays on classroom walls and guide you through the different learning spaces in the rooms. After this, at approximately 12.00pm, Prep will be holding their annual Easter Hat Parade and parents are very welcome to come and watch the classes. If you wish to participate, we ask that parents create Easter hats with their child at home, prior to this event. The hats can be brought to school on the day and stored in the classroom.

If parents wish to take their child home at the conclusion of the Parade, please inform your class teacher via the Student Planner or Prep Reception in writing. If you are leaving school after the Parade, please collect your child from their classroom and make sure you see the teacher first.

As a reminder to our community, although children giving each other chocolate eggs at school is a lovely idea, we ask that no chocolate eggs or sweets be brought to school. This is to ensure the health and safety of all our students and avoid the sadness associated with missing out or losing a gift. In lieu, hand-made cards would be welcomed.

Staff News

In Term 2, the Preparatory School will be welcoming Virginie Eggenschwiller as the replacement French teacher for Sylvia Merlot, who will be going on Maternity Leave for Terms 2 and 3. They will be working alongside each other this term as Miss Eggenschwiller familiarises herself with the students and Preparatory program.

Australian Rowing Championships

This week we had 14 members of our Rowing team representing the School at the Australian Rowing Championships out at Sydney International Rowing Centre. This regatta signifies the highest level of competition for the sport, with athletes representing clubs and schools from around the country. These types of competitions provide an opportunity for students to compete on behalf of their peers. These forms of competition provide the perfect environment for students to develop invaluable skills in resilience and grit. Students develop the ability to be calm under pressure and develop a laser type focus on personal, team and school performance goals, an attribute that will bode well for them in future years.

These competitions also provide an opportunity for our students in the wider sports program to get behind a common cause. Similar to a supporter barracking for their beloved AFL team, our students take ownership of the others who are competing for their school at higher levels. This camaraderie and joint support of a higher goal is very unique to sport.

Our rowers have had one of the most successful seasons across the 2018/2019 season with countless medals and podium finishes at a variety of regattas. We look forward to reporting a full list of results from the Australian Rowing Championships next week.

Below is a photo of students from across different years and sports coming in early before class to watch and support Elizabeth Holtheuer compete in the A final of the U17 Single Scull on the live stream of the Australian Rowing Championships.

Tennis

Saturday was the final round of the NSTA summer competition. All teams had the opportunity to play in either a final or a playoff match. Congratulations to Teams 1, 5, 12 and 20 who made it into the Final. All students played really well and challenged their opponents in every point with many games going to deuce. The Team 1 boys, Aymon and Sebastian, pulled off an exceptional win with both boys winning their singles matches in a tie-break. Team 5 got off to a great start winning their doubles match but were unfortunate to go down in both singles to finish the day as runner ups. Team 12 and 20 also had close matches but unfortunately the opposition were just better on the day. A great morning of Tennis. All students should be proud of their efforts over the term. Winter Tennis trials continue this week in preparation for Saturday matches which start Term 2, Saturday 4 April.

Redlands Oval

Excitement has been building for weeks with our oval getting greener and greener and last Saturday our girls Football program were our first Saturday users, playing intra-squad matches and running clinics and training. Despite heavy overnight rain, our girls were able to go ahead and trained and played with dry feet in a great session, which I’m sure most will agree was a picture perfect opening for the new playing surface.

The Oval is sure to be a busy space on Saturdays as it will play host to almost all of our home fixtures for our Football teams. Matches for Football, Rugby, AFL and Hockey begin in Term 2. The draw is being finalised and will be available soon.

The oval was well utilised despite last week’s rain. AFLNSW ran Auskick clinics for the Preschool students and Sydney Swans development officers had Yr 3 running through their paces in hour long SwansFit sessions.

Before school training sessions for Rugby and AFL have not yet been finalised, but will be held on Redlands Oval, beginning in Term 2. Days will be finalised before the end of term.

Our Girls Football teams play their last matches in their IPSHA season this Saturday. All our other Term 1 IPSHA teams have finished for the term.

Sydney Grammar Preseason Cup

Our first hitout for mixed Football teams took place last weekend in an invitational tournament held by Sydney Grammar School, with teams entered into each division. Redlands teams had a great hitout to start the season. Our Junior Division 2 team were crowned champions and brought home a replica World Cup trophy for their efforts. Our Senior Division 1 team heartbreakingly lost their Semi Final in penalties after showing tremendous courage coming back from a two goal deficit to force the draw and take it to penalties. It was great to be involved in the first ever SGS tournament and our teams played with such endeavour and sportsmanship that I’m certain we’ll be invited to return for more fun in 2020.

Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon

Don’t forget to book a ticket for Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon, an event not to be missed on the Redlands calendar! The Luncheon will provide a great opportunity to celebrate the integral value of sport to the Redlands community and its students of the past, present and future. Sports education enables students to develop skills and behaviours that are essential for their future journey. The list of guests features  a range of Redlands greatest athletes including Karyn Gojnich (Davis), Class of 1978 (Olympic Sailor, Redlander and Redlands mother), Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987 (Olympic Rower), Lachlan Mackay, Class of 2000 (Rugby Wallaby and Brumby) and Holly Crawford, Class of 2001 (Olympic Snowboarder).

Winter Sport

Winter sport selections begin on 27 March. Any students uncertain of their winter sports should contact the Sports Office as soon as possible.

School Holiday Camps

Netball and Football programs will be running school holiday camps during the first week of the upcoming school holidays – 15, 16 and 17 April.

Football camps will run on the Junior School Oval from 9.30am – 2.30pm
Netball camps will run in Dunnet Hall from 10.00am – 3.00pm

All camps will be run by Redlands Sports coaching staff and contain skills and drills components and modified games. Camps are $60/day or $160 for all three days.

RedFactor

The Music Department was impressed with the number of outstanding auditions held over the past fortnight for the upcoming RedFactor. Unfortunately, we are unable to have all students in the event but would like to let all students who auditioned know that we were appreciative of the wide variety of performances presented. There are a number of factors which are taken into consideration when choosing performances for this event as we always ensure that the selection process is fair and equitable. Students who were not selected for the final event will be given an opportunity to perform at an upcoming Year Assembly and this information will be distributed by the Year Coordinators.

Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to perform in the upcoming event:

JAM on Toast
