Issue 8 2023 Term 1 Week 8 - 23 Mar 2023

From the Principal

It was wonderful to see so many students, parents, staff, alumni and members of the local community attend our Redlands Autumn Fair on Saturday. This year I have spoken widely about my goal of reconnecting our community after the challenges of the past few years and the Autumn Fair certainly provided the chance for all of us to come together and share in the festivities. I can even confess that my half an hour stint in the Dunk Tank was a lot of fun, even though I was dunked regularly by the students. I was certainly impressed by their aim!

However, my highlight of the day was when I bumped into a Redlands graduate from the Class of 1961 on the second floor of the Liggins Building. She had no current connection to the school and had seen an advertisement for the Autumn Fair so decided to come in and show her daughter her old school after not setting foot on the campus for many years. She shared with me stories of her time at Redlands and even showed me a photo of her small class of approximately a dozen students from 1950. Her pride in her old school was palpable (once a Redlander, always a Redlander) and she shared with me how happy she was to see it thriving today. A truly unexpected, but powerful, reconnection of community.

I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to all of the staff, RPFA representatives and parent, student and alumni volunteers whose tremendous efforts made the day such a success.

From March 18-21, the Head of Secondary School, Head of Preparatory School, Dean of International Baccalaureate and I attended the IB Global Conference in Adelaide. After a three year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, it was wonderful to attend this conference in person and to meet and hear from IB schools and educators from around Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and the world.

A key part of our current Strategic Plan is to review our P-12 curriculum frameworks to ensure they support and challenge students to achieve personal excellence through the programmes and pathways on offer. Over the second half of last year, the School had an external educational consultant conduct a review of the academic programmes at Redlands and to give feedback on the potential implementation of additional academic programmes offered by the IB (the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Careers Programme). To inform this report, there was a review of existing and potential programmes and consultation through interviews, focus group feedback, classroom observations and surveys with key stakeholders including Executive staff, middle and senior leaders, teaching staff, support and operational staff, students and parents across different sections of the School.

Our recent attendance at the IB Global Conference allowed us to learn more about all of the IB programmes to assist in our review of them at Redlands. The School will be meticulous and deliberate in its review and analysis of any potential implementation of these programmes or other curriculum frameworks in the future to ensure that they will enhance the teaching and learning opportunities for current and future students at the School. We look forward to sharing more about any further consultation opportunities and reflections of these, or other academic frameworks, in the future.

Our Liggins Building, a precious part of Redlands’ heritage, is the only remaining element of our school grounds that links almost 100 years of Redlanders. Originally known as Liggins House, the building was opened on 9 May 1923 in honour of Redlands’ co-founder Elizabeth Liggins. Throughout its history, our community has generously supported some of its upgrades, including the 2007 Liggins Atrium Project enjoyed by students today. In preparation for the Liggins Building celebrating its centenary this year, we have embarked on a significant restoration to help preserve its historic façade and refurbish the interior to provide an exceptional learning environment for our students and staff. For more information on how you can support this treasured building please visit our Foundation section.

I would like to extend my congratulations to all of our rowers whose season culminated in their respective Heads of the River last weekend. There were some wonderful results by our students in quite tough conditions, and the spirit and camaraderie they showed over the weekend was exemplary.

Finally, tonight is the opening night of our School Musical, The Addams Family, which will run through Saturday. The many students and staff involved in the Musical have been working tirelessly for months in preparation for these performances. As many of you know, the annual Musical is a regular highlight on the Redlands calendar, and I look forward to seeing and hearing our students perform tonight.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Community Update

Wow and thank you to our dedicated and passionate volunteers and staff, led by our effervescent RPFA, for their mighty effort in delivering our Autumn Fair. This event certainly lived up to expectations (and surpassed them for many) and was well worth the wait. It was fantastic to see our community come together to enjoy, celebrate and participate in the many activities and performances that took place throughout the day.

It was a pleasure to join our end of season Basketball dinner earlier this week in celebration of another exceptional season of success and growth for our students and coaches. My thanks and congratulations to the Friends of Basketball group for an invitation to this terrific event. Redlands Friends of Groups, or FoGs as they are affectionately known, support various activities across the school be they educational, cultural or sporting.

Being part of a FoG enables parents and carers to support the building of a strong and positive sense of school community through:

  1. Connection – by forming a supportive network that welcomes new members to the activity
  2. Support – by undertaking encouraging, energetic and respectful support (of all participants) at events and matches, organising social activities through the year and an annual end of season celebration dinner
  3. Assistance – many activities require active assistance such as timekeeping or scoring, assistant refereeing or marshalling or making uniforms, costumes, props or scenery

FoGs have been established for Basketball, Drama, Football, Hockey, Music, Dance, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing and Snowsports. If your children are involved in these activities then I would encourage you to contact the relevant FoG.

Redlands cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are.  We are proud of our warm, diverse and inclusive school community. Our School is enriched by those from interstate and overseas, with more than 50 countries represented in our student cohort. This week the School celebrated Harmony Week, an annual event that encourages people to share the message that ‘everyone belongs’. Redlands celebrated Harmony Week with a wide range of activities, learning experiences, classroom conversations and events. Our Prep School kicked off their Harmony Week activities with a delicious French breakfast that was enjoyed by students and teachers alike.

A reminder that we welcome our community to join us for a time of Easter reflection, prayer and connection on Wednesday 5 April from 7.00pm in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Church, Cremorne (with parking located on Waters Rd).

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kindest regards

Autumn Fair – Thank You

This past Saturday there was a buzz of excitement from students enjoying carnival rides, and exceptional dance and music performances were enjoyed by large gatherings on the Fahl Garden. Homemade international food stalls led by our parent community had people lining up for more!

Among highlights was the Dunk Tank, where teacher volunteers, including Principal Mr Sean Corcoran and Head of Junior School Mr Ari Guha, took part to support the Class of 2023 Legacy Gift, proceeds going toward the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship.

Thank you to the MANY volunteers and alumni who joined us on the day and supported this extraordinary event in so many different ways.

Jeff Brown (School Captain 2016, Treasurer of the Redlander Alumni Association) enjoyed chatting with notable alumna Dr Sue Morey AM and despite the years between them, they both had memories of learning in the 100 years old Liggins Building as well as at Harvard University!

A very special thank you to Natalie Davies (Riches) RL 1987 and President of the Redlander Alumni Association. She gave generously of her time to coordinate the Alumni Cafe and archival displays which sparked curiosity about the School’s rich heritage, and the legacy each era has passed down to future generations of Redlanders.

We were delighted to welcome past School Captain Izzy Simpson and past Captain of Hockey Yasmin Gupta, both RL 2020. And a very special thank you to Kylie Abineno RL 1991 and her family for the incredible help in packing down the Cafe at the end of a very hot day. Kylie attended Redlands from Transition through Year 12, and can remember many classes in the Liggins Building including library lessons which were taught by current grandparent Mrs O’Neill!

Liggins Restoration Appeal

A sincere thank you to all members of our community who generously supported the Liggins Restoration Appeal. The Liggins Building is the only remaining element of our school grounds linking almost 100 years of Redlanders.

A significant schedule of works has been undertaken during the holiday break which included the refresh and upgrade of classrooms, a home for Languages. The second stage is currently in place to further refurbish the top floor which will also be a communal area with an incredible Heritage wall acknowledging our 140 year old history. There is still an opportunity to contribute and make a donation towards a Family Plaque. For more information about our Heritage or how you can support us, please visit HERE.

Falling Forward

Our Yr 12 Student Leadership Team have created a Fall Forward Award to celebrate Secondary School students who have experienced significant personal achievement, shown amazing engagement in the school community, or just simply stood out in a way that deserves recognition. Further recognition goes to those who have experienced some sort of disappointment or setback only to go on and grow from or overcome these challenges.

Students who are bestowed by our Yr 12 Leaders with a Fall Forward Award received an amazing gold Fall Forward-inspired badge that they can wear proudly on their blazer. Students also receive a certificate and chocolate.

So far in Term 1, two students have received the Fall Forward Award: Lachlan Price-Pontifex (Yr 9) and James Stuart (Yr 11).

Here’s what Yr 12 said about the student award recipients in recent assemblies:

Lachlan Price-Pontifex: The Fall Forward Award goes to a Yr 9 student who is more than deserving of this prestigious award. This individual, at a Rowing regatta a few weeks ago, was unfortunately injured right before his race, meaning that he couldn’t compete and got taken out of his boat. However, after two weeks of training hard and getting back into his groove, he, alongside his crew, went on to win the Under 16 Schoolboy Quad in Canberra, becoming Schoolboy Champions, and overcoming hardship and disappointment to row one of the best races of the weekend. Therefore, the extremely deserving winner of the first-ever Fall Forward Award is the amazing Lachie Price-Pontifex.

James Stuart: The Fall Forward Award goes to a Yr 11 student who has stepped in and stepped up in the School Musical – becoming the ‘swing’ and taking on five understudy roles for the Addams Family Musical. He has had to learn the lines and choreography for all of the main roles in the lead-up to the 2023 Musical. This person took it like a champ and instead of complaining, embraced the opportunity and FELL SO FORWARD. This is obviously a huge task and it is his dedication and commitment to other students and the production that absolutely warrants appreciation from the school community. Today’s Fall Forward Award goes to James Stuart.

The Musical Commences Tonight!

Tonight is the opening night of the 2023 Musical, the Addams Family. The Addams Family showcases the skills and talents of our Yrs 7-12 students and there are over 100 students involved on stage as performers, in the orchestra and in hair and make-up and production Our students have been working slavishly on bringing this fabulous production together, and supported by teachers and parents. We do hope you are coming along! A few tickets are still available.

RULERing our Emotions

In last week’s Note Day, the R of RULER, Recognising our emotions, was explored. This week we move to the U of RULER, which is understanding emotions; and the L of RULER, which is labelling emotions.

Understanding Emotion

This skill involves understanding both the causes and consequences of emotions, including their effects on:

  • Thinking
  • Learning
  • Decisions
  • Behaviour

In other words, understanding emotion involves asking ourselves why we feel the way we do and what happens when we feel different emotions.

It’s important to remember that we all may have unique emotional reactions to the same causes. One person’s cause for alarm may be another person’s cause for excitement.

For example, a change in teacher may cause feelings of anxiety or uncertainty for some, especially if they don’t like change. However, some may feel excited or hopeful about the prospect of change.

The Feelings Wheel

Labelling Emotion

The L in RULER is for labelling emotion.

Labelling emotion involves having and using a nuanced vocabulary to describe the full range of emotions. When we give our feelings a specific label, we create a mental picture of what each emotion looks like so that we can identify it in ourselves and others.

Labelling also helps us to effectively communicate our needs and to identify the best ways to manage our emotions.

Recognising, Understanding, and Labelling Emotions

When we discuss the Mood Meter in relation to the RULER skills, we often group recognising, understanding, and labelling together. These three skills represent our personal experiences, and developing these skills can help us to enhance our self-awareness. It’s important to recognize, understand, and label how we’re feeling before we take action with the last two RULER skills: express and regulate (next Week’s Note Day).

When we plot ourselves on the Mood Meter, we can practise the “R,” “U,” and “L” by answering the following questions:

  • Recognising: How pleasant and energetic do I feel? Where am I on the Mood Meter?
  • Understanding: What may be causing me to feel this way?
  • Labelling: What word best describes my feeling?

How are you feeling? Plot your current levels of pleasantness and energy using the scale below.

The breakfast was hosted at the Fullerton Hotel by Shivani Gopal’s company Elladex. We heard from Shivani herself as well as Naomi Simson, Faustina ‘fuzzy’ Agolley and Marina Go. All of these women had different backgrounds and career paths, but all shared the determination and desire to achieve. It was incredibly interesting to listen to their advice, struggles and experiences in overcoming adversity.

The agreed response to ‘cracking the code’ was more representation of women. If we see women achieving in all careers and in multiple areas of life then we are more likely to set higher standards and goals for ourselves. Investing in and providing opportunities for women was also a very discussed topic, it only makes sense to invest in us and there are only benefits. If opportunities and resources are given to women then we will achieve and be closer to equality and equity for women. Additionally, Marina Go provided some insightful advice about telling people what you want to achieve, if nobody knows what you want to achieve then they are unable to help you. We are very grateful for this wonderful and prescient morning which encouraged thoughtful discussion between us. ”

Rowing

It’s always inspiring to see our students achieve great success through their hard work and dedication. Rowing is a sport that requires not only physical strength, but also mental toughness and strategic thinking. The ability to synchronise movements with teammates, stay focused under pressure, and adjust to changing conditions are all essential to success in Rowing. The achievements of the Yr 10 rowers are a testament to their commitment to their sport and their willingness to put in the time and effort required to excel. Their success is also a reflection of the support they received from coaches, teammates and other members of the rowing community. Beyond the sport of Rowing, the lessons and skills learned through the sport can have a positive impact on all aspects of life. The discipline, teamwork, and resilience required in Rowing can help individuals develop the tools necessary to succeed in their personal and professional lives. Rowing is a sport that requires immense physical and mental strength, as well as teamwork and discipline. It is often used as a metaphor for life, with its ups and downs, the need for perseverance, and the importance of working together towards a common goal. Just like rowers who must synchronise their movements and work together in perfect harmony to achieve success, individuals and teams in all aspects of life must collaborate and communicate effectively to accomplish their objectives. In Rowing, even a small mistake or lack of communication can throw off the entire team’s rhythm and hinder their progress. Similarly, in life, even the smallest miscommunication or mistake can have significant consequences. The physical and mental challenges that rowers face also mirror the challenges that people encounter in their daily lives. The gruelling training and competition required in Rowing demand immense dedication, focus, and resilience. These same qualities are essential in achieving success in any aspect of life, whether it be in work, relationships, or personal growth.

We congratulate our Yr 10 rowers on a truly remarkable season. You have shown what can be accomplished when a group of individuals comes together with a shared goal and a willingness to work hard and support one another.

From two of our most passionate Yr 10 rowers, Jemima Hugman and Carolina Pedro Inacio:

“Over the season, we have had many outstanding results which has helped to motivate and inspire the Yr 10 rowers to continue working hard towards their goals. It’s always important to focus on the positives and celebrate the progress that has been made:

  • 3rd at the head of the Lake
  • 2nd at Head of the River (Year 10 division 1)
  • 2nd at Kings/PLC regatta (Schoolgirl division)
  • 3rd at Kings/PLC regatta (year 10 division 1)

At Head of the River, our crew accomplished our ultimate goal of earning a medal, despite the fact that Rowing is an extremely competitive and physically challenging sport, it offers valuable lessons. Our first year in the senior program allowed us to form new connections with older students who provided helpful guidance and advice for navigating the Secondary School. We learned about the significance of time management, as waking up at 4:30 am four times a week taught us the importance of being fully prepared the night before. Trusting the process was one of the most significant lessons we learned, as adhering to the plan was challenging but vital. Our crew focused on conquering the third 500m of the race, which is the most demanding segment. Since we weren’t one of the quickest crews out of the starting gate, we had to persevere and push ourselves to achieve the podium finish we desired. Rowing taught us the importance of goal setting, as we regularly established habit goals, short-term, and long-term goals as a team and individually. This provided us with something to strive for and made each session more valuable. Lastly, we learned never to give up, even if we had a bad session, because making an excuse once would always make it difficult to regain confidence. Most of us had the chance to work in quads, which was one of the most satisfying experiences since we knew we weren’t alone and that our efforts benefited not just ourselves but also our teammates”.

Year 9

Yr 9 Students Involved in the School Musical

Over the last term (with early preparations starting late last year) a number of Yr 9 students have put considerable time and effort contributing to the school musical, The Addams Family. These students, alongside all other year groups are members of the cast, members of the orchestra, hair and make-up and stage crew, working together to bring another wonderful school production to life.

We wish these students luck as they complete their final rehearsals this week and for the show’s opening on Thursday evening.:

Toby Healey as Pugsley

Lexi Jones as Ancestor Ensemble

Scarlett Giddings as Hair and Make-Up Crew

A bit about the musical:

Redlands presents THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story and is every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before– keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Subject Focus – Science

This week, Yr 9 students expertly performed a cow’s eye dissection.

Autumn Fair

Thank you to all of the students who volunteered their time to help at stalls or perform at the Autumn Fair on Saturday 18th March. It was wonderful to see so many of you there!

School TV – Parenting Series

Despite the best efforts of parents around the world, the reality is, there is no such thing as the ‘perfect parent’. However, arming yourself with the right information is a good start!

Research shows, that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people, is a close relationship with a supportive adult. With the mental health of today’s young people being at an all-time low, it is simply not enough to parent effectively. Parents need to familiarise themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising children.

SchoolTV – RAISING GIRLS

Raising girls in today’s modern world can be a difficult path for parents and carers to navigate. These days, girls are transitioning to puberty a lot earlier than they used to and the physical, psychological and emotional changes they experience are challenging. As a result, by mid-adolescence, girls are twice as likely to develop mood disorders more so than boys.

Some parents and carers may feel uncertain about how best to support their daughter through the ups and downs of adolescence and how to keep the lines of communication open. With the rise of social media and technology, mental health difficulties in girls are increasing as often they are faced with online images that make it difficult to see themselves as acceptable. Ensuring a daughter’s opinions are heard and her views listened to, will go a long way towards making her feel loved and supported as she tries to establish her own identity.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will attain a clearer picture of what girls are wanting from their adult carers and how best to support them through adolescence.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

SchoolTV – RAISING BOYS

Many parents will attest to the fact that most boys are active, loud, rambunctious and prone to rough play, but this should not affect how a parent acts towards their son. Be careful not to pigeon-hole your son into sex-specific behaviours or gender roles. The male brain is distinctly different in its development. A boy’s physical maturity is often at odds with his mental and brain development.

Societal beliefs about how to raise boys can sometimes influence their adult carers. Although we are not determined by our biology, it is a factor. It is important to support boys in their natural tendencies and nurture their strengths and abilities. Teach them the skills they need for their future and to develop a healthy identity. It is important for boys to have a role model they can connect with and acknowledge who they are. One of the most important determinants for a boy’s development is how secure they feel growing up.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will gain a better understanding into some of the more complex issues relating to raising boys.

All’s Fair at Redlands

Well, here we are at the end of Week 8 of Term 1 with only two weeks left until the Easter break. Where has all the time gone?! It seems like only yesterday that Yr 7 were attending their Secondary School transition days and yet now they have moved through a Summer Sport commitment, experienced a week at our High Country Campus, completed an in-class Christian Studies assessment, submitted a take-home English assessment, sat a Mathematics assessment and are gearing up to hand in a Music assessment. Last week, they even confronted and defeated the spectre that is Yr 7 NAPLAN – Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy! And on top of all of that, they have been involved in a huge range of cocurricular clubs and activities.

What a whirlwind it has been!

This Saturday past was a perfect example of the energy and vitality we have already seen this year at Redlands. Of course, I am referring to the wonderful Redlands Autumn Fair! With a petting zoo, rides, games sideshow alley, great food and entertainment (thank you student dancers!), and even a comical mix of teachers getting soaked in the ‘dunk tank’ (including yours truly), it was a wonderful indicator of the vibrant and supportive community we have at Redlands. There were so many smiling Yr 7 faces enjoying the experience on Saturday and so, if you missed out on it this year, I urge you to attend next year! You can see more of the fair by visiting our website.

On Monday, we began the week with an important Chapel Service with a focus on Harmony Week. A key message of respecting people of all varieties was emphasised, as was the value of coming together as a supportive community in all our endeavours. This built very nicely on our previous week’s focus in Tutor groups on respectful interactions with each other.

On Wednesday, students were placed into their vertical House groups for the second time this term. These groupings contain approximately four students from each year group and are designed to encourage students to connect with and understand the experiences of others across the School. It also allows for students, particularly our Yr 7s, to learn from the experiences of others in Year Groups above them and to connect more comprehensively as a diverse Redlands community. While there has been some awkwardness and uncertainty in these early sessions, Yr 12 leaders and Tutors have done a great job at bringing students together and these groups will no doubt be another great space for important social and emotional learning for students.

A huge congratulations to Aaron Oh who, last night, won the local final round of the Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition in the Junior Division, held at Pymble Ladies College. Aaron has now qualified to compete in the upcoming regional finals scheduled for May. What a great achievement! Congratulations to all students who took part in the competition and thank you to all the coaches and teachers who helped to support them throughout their oratory journey!

Tonight will be the first screening of our Redlands Musical, The Addams Family. I am seeing it tonight and am looking forward to a spectacular night. If you didn’t manage to get tickets for this year’s production, I encourage you to try to see next year’s. I wish all our Yr 7s in the cast and crew all the best for their next three nights of performance!! Break a leg (metaphorically, of course)!

Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Week 9: Cross Country Carnival (Monday 27/3)

This is an enjoyable event for Yr 7 – so get excited and get involved! (See below for further information)

  • Week 10: International Day (Tuesday 4/4)

NSW School Vaccination Program 2023

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The following vaccines are offered free to Yr 7 students at school on Wednesday 5 April.

  • Yr 7 – diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV)

Students who miss this clinic date will be offered a catch-up opportunity on Thursday 25 May.

From February 2023, children in Yr 7 will now only need one dose of HPV vaccination. This change has been endorsed by ATAGI based on evidence showing that one dose provides the same level of protection against HPV as two doses.

Vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received.  To provide consent for vaccination go online, you will need:

Benefits of online consent for parents/carers:

  • SMS notifications when vaccinations are given
  • easy updating of your child’s details online
  • faster upload of your child’s vaccination records to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper-based consent form directly from the Year Advisor.

To help answer questions you may have regarding providing vaccination and online consent, please visit the NSW Health website.

All the Fun of the Fair!

What a wonderful community event last Saturday’s Autumn fair was! With summer instead of autumnal weather, the warm temperatures matched the palpable feeling of community warmth as this eagerly-awaited event took place after months of meticulous planning.

It was so good to see students and families enjoying the event and above all, I want to extend my sincere gratitude and congratulations to our Redlands Parents and Friends Association, ably assisted by an army of parent volunteer helpers and a dedicated team of our Redlands staff, for their herculean efforts. Quite simply, the event’s success and military-like precision was due to this group of people and we are all deeply appreciative.

Behavioural Expectations

Every member of our Redlands community has the right to feel safe, valued and included.

In our assembly this week, I revisited my start-of-term message with the students about the School’s expectations on how we treat and interact with one another, which parents and carers may recall I highlighted in my first Note Day of the year.

I shared with the students that in the last fortnight, we have had behaviours that are not aligned with either our School Values (p.3 of the Student Planner), our School Rules and Expectations (p.8 of the Student Planner).  I also reminded the students of the School’s clear expectations and the processes that are in place when this happens.

Whilst the vast majority of our students live our School Values, I asked all of the students to look out for one another and support our staff by using our School Value of moral courage and being positive bystanders when they see things that they know are not right. Class teachers will also talk about this with their students in class and I will speak to Yr 5 when they return from camp next week.

We know how important these personal values are in life beyond the school gates and so I encourage families to talk about this at home, as you feel appropriate.

Athletics Carnival

In searing temperatures, our abridged Junior School Athletics carnival took place last Thursday morning and it was a joy to see the students enjoy this day of House spirit and athletic endeavour. As I shared in my words at the end of the carnival, whilst there were some incredible achievements and records broken, for me it was just as important to see students giving of their best and achieving their own personal bests, having great fun along the way. I also loved seeing the intrinsically supportive mindset that so many students have, even whilst competing against others.

I recognise and thank our Sports team, ably supported by a team of coaches and Redlands staff, who all play various roles to ensure the smooth operation of the day. In particular, Mr Dunne and Mr Sharma submitted a number of modifications in our own internal processes due to the weather and were at the venue from 6am to ensure that everything was in place for the benefit of the students.

Yr 5 Camp

Yesterday, I enjoyed a memorable day with the group and in only one day, I was able to see students involved in mountain biking, canoeing, raft building (and water testing!), a low ropes course, a high ropes course, camp craft, initiative exercises, orienteering, tent set-up (even though they are not camping overnight) and take on the infamous ‘Giant Swing’!

Mr Brakell (Yr 5 Coordinator) has placed some photos on the Yr 5 page of Pulse for families to get a ‘feel’ of the camp so far and I look forward to joining parents as we welcome the group back tomorrow (Friday) at the updated time of 2pm on the Murdoch St side of the campus where there is a larger, designated bus zone.

I also acknowledge and thank Mr Brakell’s meticulous preparation and hands-on leadership, ably supported by Mrs Smith and our team of staff there, both in the weeks leading up to camp and whilst there to care for each child.

Education Perfect World Languages Champions 2023

Congratulations to Redlands for coming 1st in Spanish internationally out of 1,182 schools in the recent EP World Championships! This was last achieved by Redlands in 2020 (during lockdown!) and is a phenomenal result and recognition of the students’ diligence and efforts to learn and revise their language vocabulary.  We acknowledged this notable achievement in assembly and the students listed below finished in the top 8 of their respective Year Group in Spanish and will be invited to enjoy some churros to celebrate. The highest scoring student (as denoted by the asterisk) in each year will also receive a $30 gift card.

Message from Ms Nogueira (K-6 OOSH Coordinator)

We are so proud of our children, families, and staff involvement with OOSH this term. Parents have been engaging with our activities in many ways, making it possible for us to get to know our children even more. After receiving beautiful books written in many different languages, we want to hear more from you.

What is your family’s favourite traditional meal? Our next step is to create, with the children and families, our OOSH cookbook. Children have already started working on this project and it looks promising!

Our community will continue to be our focus for the upcoming Vacation Care, and some parents have already shared great ideas with our team. There will be delicious food, performances and activities reflecting our diverse group. Don’t forget to email us or talk to us if you can collaborate in any way. Children feel so happy when they can share about their families with others, and this is so important to help create the sense of belonging that we are celebrating this week.

Thank you for all the support!

Recognising and Celebrating our Diversity

Harmony Week has provided us with a wonderful opportunity to spotlight and celebrate diversity in the Preparatory School. Classroom conversations and friendship circles have focussed on the language and meaning of diversity. In the early years, this will often move to shared understanding around how we appreciate that we are all different and that every person belongs. Throughout the week I have listened to class discussions, read stories, and enjoyed watching the students engage in activities that focused upon recognising, respecting and celebrating differences. Sadly, we see too often in our communities, differences being feared, disrespected and misunderstood and I worry that our young learners hear throw away comments from adults or watch inappropriate images and content that can start to form their opinions of differences in a negative way. I encourage us all to be aware of these situations and know that even the smallest of comments can make lasting impressions on our smallest of learners.

A collective activity to recognise diversity this week was the delicious and fun French breakfast on Tuesday. We felt like we were having breakfast on the Champs Elysées with Madam Merlot creating an authentic French experience for our Prep students. I hope that you have also appreciated the beautiful Harmony Week peace doves that are around the Prep School.

A Message from K-6 OOSH

We are so proud of our children, families, and staff involvement with OOSH this term! Parents have been engaging with our activities in many ways, making it possible for us to get to know our children even more. After receiving beautiful books written in many different languages, we want to hear more from you; What is your family’s favourite traditional meal? Our next step is to create, with the children and families, our OOSH cookbook. Children have already started working on this project, and it looks promising!

Our community will continue to be our focus for the upcoming Vacation Care, and some parents have already shared great ideas with our team. There will be delicious food, performances and activities reflecting our diverse group. Don’t forget to email us or talk to us if you can collaborate in any way! Children feel so happy when they can share about their families with others, and this is so important to help create the sense of belonging that we are celebrating this week.

A reminder that the Prep Reception doors are closed from 4pm. All entering and exiting must go through the Junior School Reception please.

Thank you for all the support!

Save the Date: Year 2 Strings Open Lesson

Yr 2 students are excited to share their Term 1 Strings learning in an Open Lesson in Week 10. Parents and carers are invited to witness the wonderful skills and concepts students have been working on, and the connections they are making to their non-instrumental curriculum music lessons. Please save the date for Monday 3 April 2:20pm, with more details to follow.

Redlands International Day

4 April

The excitement is building for our Prep International Day on Tuesday 4 April. We encourage our students to come dressed in or have a splash of colour from the country that they identify with. It certainly is wonderful to show traditional dress but at the same time, the day is about us celebrating our international diversity, not competing about costumes!

To help facilitate the day’s planning, we would love volunteers to come and help us at the times and activities listed below.  Please email me directly at abreckenridge@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you would like to be part of the day. For those parents who have already been in contact with me, hopefully you are happy for me to place you on any activity.

8.30-9am – sporting activities and games (soccer, badminton, tee-ball, Bollywood dance)

9am-10.30am, 11am-12pm, 12pm-1pm – Arts and craft from around the world

(Vietnamese hat making, Chinese dragons, Origami, Latin American fiesta, USA dream catchers, Indian Sari making and henna, European Easter egg decorating)

We have an interesting rotation where our students will be making origami figures, this will require a lot of paper. If you would like to donate any scrapbooking type of paper for this activity, we would be very grateful.

Allister Street

Unfortunately, I must again remind Prep parents about the dangers of parking and driving illegally on Allister Street. This week alone, we have had two near misses of children being hit by cars. It is illegal in any situation to perform a U-turn over double lines, so please refrain from doing this on Allister Street.

Please know that if you are caught in traffic or finding a car spot, your child will never be left alone. The class teacher will always wait with them until they are picked up.

A gentle reminder that no parent is to enter the car park on foot to pick up their child. The car park is for carline only please.

Once again, thank you for working with us to keep our children safe around the school.

Secondary Sport

What a start to the winter season, last week saw the all the conditions play havoc with sports trainings, with the rains washing out Tuesday training and then the extreme heat on Thursday putting a stop to the outdoor sports!  We are hoping the weather holds off to provide us with a much-needed winter season after the last few years!

A huge congratulations to our rowers over the weekend who braved the heat out at the respective Girls and Boys NSW Head of the River Regatta, it was great to see the so many parents and students there to support each regatta, James has included a breakdown of results below.

Rowing

Last weekend saw the final regatta of the season being the NSW Girls and Boys Head of the River where Redlands ended the season with what was this highest medal haul ever of 10 crew medals!

Our Girls started the weekend on Saturday winning 1 silver and 5 bronze medals while the boys continued the success on Sunday winning another 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

It was an incredibly gratifying experience to follow all of our crews across the weekend watching and cheering for them from start to finish. I could not have been prouder of our Redlands crews who made the brave decision to go to a new level, to dig a little deeper and show real grit and resilience in the closing stages of racing when there is no doubt they would have liked to stop. In many cases they pushed themselves into medal winning positions. If there is no more important lesson to be taken from sport, it is this experience of never giving up and to try and hard as you can!

A huge thank you to our wonderful parents and the Friends of Rowing for providing the catering and great support across the weekend. The cheers and cowbell really does provide an extra lift!

Winter Sport Preparation – transition from Summer Sport to Winter Sport

As you would be aware this Wednesday (15 March) was the first Wednesday in our transition from Summer Sport to Winter Sport and specifically for our Winter Representative Sports the first week of sport trials and team allocation.

Compulsory Sport Trials

If your child has elected to play a Representative Sport they will need to attend another trial on Saturday 25 March (7.30am-11.30am), Wednesday 29 March and Wednesday 5 March. If students who are listed in representative sports do not attend these trials they will have YET TO TRIAL listed next to their name and will be assessed in the coming weeks when the season commences. Year 5 students who are on camp will trial on Saturday 25 March. We don’t consider previous teams or outside experience if your child is absent at these trials. Please refer to this link for exact times and locations. 2023 Winter Sport Trials.  Parents and or carers are not permitted on site during sport trials.

Representative Sport Team Lists

Once teams are selected and for weekly team selections, please refer to the Term 2 Winter Sport team lists. These will be updated on Pulse following each fixture. Please remember that our Redlands Representative teams are fluid, meaning teams may change week to week depending on three main criteria: Ability, Attendance and Attitude. Any team movements will be discussed with your child by their coach. Given that we play in a graded competition against schools, we aim to provide the most competitive team for that round. There may be times where your child is asked to also fill in on a second game when absences are high. Students are reminded to check their team lists each Thursday for any changes in preparation for their Saturday game.

2023 Sport Information Booklet for families

This link was shared with you previously but if you would like a refresher, please click on the link below where can view this booklet. For all Sport information regarding Winter Sport, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms please refer to our Parent Information Booklets on Pulse.

Cross Country Carnival

The Cross Country Carnival will now take place on Monday 8 May for all Junior School students. The carnival will be held at Tunks Park, Cammeray.

We will have full access to the entire Tunks Park fields and students will enjoy an open and flat running course. Each student will complete the course twice (two laps) to achieve 2.5km total distance.

Our aim is for this to be a fun experience for everyone on the day but also provide a great experience and challenge for those aiming to progress to HICES and CIS where the courses present many different challenges.

Upon arrival at the venues, students in each grade will be divided into two groups (Boys Championship Race and a Girls Championship Race) which will run as separate events.

After the event the result will be sorted into age groups with the top 5 runners in boys and the top 5 runners in girls in each age group will make up the Redlands team that will participate at the HICES Carnival on the 23 May.

Please refer to our Cross-Country Carnival page on Pulse for all information relating to our 3rd major carnival this year.

Welcome

Welcome to another incredible action-packed Snowsports season, and a special welcome to those who are joining our vibrant community on the slopes for the first time!

Redlands has been involved in competitive Snowsports for many years and has won numerous awards at the national level for individual events and as a school. We are committed to preparing our students to ride and ski safely and competently to enjoy this wonderful lifelong family sport.

To race, students need to confidently ski or snowboard on blue runs. The on-snow program commences with the start of the July school holiday, and if your child is keen to compete, they can enter the Redlands Cup, followed by the Sydney Interschools Championships. There are a wide variety of Ski and Snowboard events, with Redlands offering specialist training (Kindergarten-12) for participants through our partnership with Thredbo.

We are always on the lookout for parent volunteers to assist with various aspects of the on-snow events, particularly at Redlands Cup and Interschools. If you are interested in supporting the Friends of Snowsports, get in touch with Chairperson Nicky Wessels (details on the Redlands Pulse Community Page) or register interest through Snowsports registrations when they open.

When they become available, Redlands can offer Thredbo Premium Season Passes for students at an exclusive rate (2023 cost TBC), as well as group lessons when students are on our programs.

Students attending Winter School will have the Season Pass included in their fees and do not need to purchase one through the Snowsports Registrations. All other students participating in Redlands Snowsport programs are encouraged to purchase the Season Pass through us to take advantage of exclusive price.

Further details on registrations for all events will be available via Redlands Pulse in the coming weeks, but for now here is an overview of the key dates along with a few more details.

The Addams Family

Tonight is the Opening Night of The Addams Family! There are over 100 students involved in the Musical, either in the performance, or production and hair/makeup. We are so proud of the hard work from all the students and staff – it is going to be a truly magical production.

Theatresports Performance Evening

Theatresports challenges performers to create instant theatre through set games based entirely on improvisation. The result is a spontaneous, team-based performance which promotes a highly supportive environment, that’s also a lot of fun!  The energetic and unpredictable style of Theatresports is judged on three different criteria:  Technique, Narrative, and Entertainment and all of this performed to a time limit.

It’s going to be a high energy, highly entertaining night of wacky characters in sticky situations. We hope you can join us for the Theatresports Competition Performance evening.

Yr 10 Curriculum Performance Evening

Our first curriculum performance evening of 2023 is coming up very soon. The event will take place across two evenings and is free to attend. You are invited to join us for A Night With Shakespeare. As part of the half yearly examination, Yr 10 students will perform a collection of scenes from different Shakespearean plays. From Romeo and Juliet, to Macbeth, there truly is something for everyone.

Yr 10 have been working incredibly hard on their scenes and cannot wait to perform for you. Details are as follows:

Date: Thursday 27 April and Friday 28 April

Time: 6:30pm

Where: Drama Studio (R15)

Music

Last Saturday’s Autumn Fair was a hot showcase of our Jazz Program at Redlands!  We are grateful for all the volunteers and the many students from the Junior Jazz, Intermediate and Advanced Stage Bands, and the Jazz Vocal Ensemble who shared their talents and energy for the joy of the broader community.  What a fun way to spend a Saturday with the day’s program capably compered by our 2023 Music Captains.

Tonight sees Opening Night of the Redlands Musical – Addam’s Family, and we are proud of all the Redlands vocalists and instrumentalists whose lights will shine at The Concourse in the days ahead. Congratulations to the Drama Department and the assisting Music staff for all your efforts to bring this story to life! Toi toi!

As well as the big events on the horizon, we have some further exciting auditions and applications closing soon (see below) and strongly encourage all our Redlands Musicians to see what opportunities are available to them and to lean in. Congratulations too to the Junior Campus finalists of the Red Factor variety show! You made it a very tricky job for our panel – and we commend all entrants for the immense creativity and joy that was shared in the audition process.

Strap in for some great music making for the next few weeks as we bring Term One to a happy close!

From our Administrators

Have you downloaded the Redlands App? It’s not just for parents. Senior students too are being encouraged to download the App so they too can manage their private lessons and ensemble attendance. You’ll be amazed how much it streamlines our communication, and students can keep track on all their Redlands Activities in one location!

Contact helpdesk@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you need any assistance with the App.

Please reach out to our offices if we can assist you with anything further.
