Issue 8 2022 Term 1 Week 8 - 24 Mar 2022

From The Principal

I appreciated the opportunity to attend the ISA & AHISA National Education Forum in Canberra last week, along with the Chair of Redlands Board, Glenda McLoughlin. Among a range of quality presentations, Professor Donna Cross highlighted the importance of a strategic focus on wellbeing for school communities, which is one of our key Strategic Drivers. We are currently focused on refining and documenting the scope and sequence of our P-12 Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program. Dean of Students (7-12), Marita Jansons, and Dean of Students (P-6), Katie-Louise Clinton, have been awarded the inaugural Innovative Teaching Fellowship and will be travelling to the US in April to attend a National CASEL conference and to visit numerous schools with high quality programs.

Professor Cross highlighted that 700 research studies have demonstrated that the implementation of an average SEL initiative has the benefit of an additional four months academic attainment, which was a powerful reminder of the importance of focusing on supporting student and staff wellbeing.

You may also be interested that the following five factors were presented as the best predictors of wellbeing:

  1. Positive relationships (social isolation increases the risk of death by 30%)
  2. Physical activity which gets rid of cortisol
  3. Healthy weight
  4. Low consumption of alcohol
  5. Healthy diet

I am very much looking forward to attending the opening night of Redlands production of Shrek The Musical this evening, the School’s first live musical since 2019. It has been wonderful to witness the buzz around campus from all of the students involved and my sincere thanks to all staff involved in making the production possible during this logistically challenging period.

It has also been pleasing to see our camp program back in operation this term with Year 7 students attending the High Country Campus in Jindabyne and Year 5 students away in the Southern Highlands this week. These Outdoor Education experiences would not be possible without the dedicated support of staff who ensure that students get the opportunity to thrive through this important experiential learning program.

We have received a few queries regarding the requirements for household contacts, in the situation where more than one family member may become COVID-positive over time. The following clarification may assist.

A household contact of a COVID-positive person must isolate for 7 days. Following that time period, they are not obligated to self-isolate for the next 14 days, even if another household contact becomes COVID- positive. This means a household contact does not need to self-isolate as a contact more than once in a 21-day period unless the person is diagnosed with COVID-19. In this case they will need to self-isolate again for 7 days as a confirmed case.

If a household contact is notified of a new case within their household after 14 days since they completed their self-isolation, they will need to isolate again for 7 days unless they have previously tested positive, and it has been no more than 8 weeks since they ceased self-isolating as a positive case.

Community Update

We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong and generous tradition of service.  Parents, carers and friends of the School proudly support the enrichment of our students’ lives in many ways, through regular donations and by giving one of the most special gifts of all – their time.

Redlands, like most independent schools, has a Foundation that supports the School’s strategic and philanthropic programs.  The Foundation Advisory Committee (FAC) guide the School with experienced counsel and stewardship of our Foundation Office, providing resources and assistance in support of the School’s Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan

The FAC’s experienced stewardship of our philanthropic program enables Redlands to continue to invest in the growth and advancement of the School.  The FAC held their first meeting of the year this week and my thanks to those who serve on this committee for their individual and collective contribution.

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the Term 1. With the end of another Term in sight, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) continue to actively bring our various groups together both socially and operationally. A number of Term 1 social events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here.

All of the important groups of committed and generous volunteer members at Redlands highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands and we thank them for their continued guidance and support.

We are delighted to announce that tickets to the Science and Innovation Luncheon at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on Friday 20 May are now on sale here. Proceeds from this event will be dedicated to the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship. For more information on the Science and Innovation Lunch, Dr Sue Morey AM and Redlands Musical history please visit our Foundation section.

A reminder that tickets are also on sale for our Twilight in the Garden social event on Friday 1 April. Tickets are limited and selling fast so don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to meet and socialise with new friends, old friends and the wider Redlands community in the Fahl Garden.

Our annual Snowsports Icebreaker event will be held from 6.00pm on Thursday 28 April at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.  This year’s event also provides the opportunity for our snowsports community to farewell Bruce Campbell, whose passion for Snowsports helped drive the establishment of our Winter School and the annual Redlands Cup competition.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Science and Innovation Luncheon – Tickets on sale!

We are delighted to announce the Science and Innovation Luncheon to celebrate a long history of Science and Innovation at Redlands. Proceeds from this event will be dedicated to the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship to honour and celebrate her outstanding service achievements and standards of excellence in the field of Medicine. This fifth means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship will provide the opportunity of a Redlands education to an exceptional student for the entire six years of their Redlands Secondary School education.

Dr Sue Morey made an enormous contribution with over 60 years of service in the area of community health within cities, as well as across regional and rural Australia and she is perhaps best known for her dedicated leadership as Chief Health Officer for NSW from 1988 to 1994. In 1999 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to the development and promotion of improved public health services.

Musicals at Redlands have a Long History

The 1982 production of Bye Bye Birdie began a tradition that continues 40 years later with Redlands’ 2022 production of  Shrek the Musical’. As the Musical performances evolved, the production moved from Redlands Hall to the Seymour Centre and more recently, to the larger and more sophisticated theatre environment. of The Concourse Chatswood.

Our Archivist, Marguerite Gillezeau shared with me that the first annual school production was staged in December 1884, six months after the School’s opening on 14 July in the Mission Hall in Fitzroy Street, Milson’s Point. After the move to Redlands on Military Road, weekly recitals were held in the ballroom of the old mansion, with larger productions held at various nearby theatres. The first full length Shakespeare production, The Tempest was staged in 1907, directed by former student and Drama teacher, Elsie Dumolo.

Despite performing a combination of traditional and original material throughout the decades, including a World War I satire in 1916 called Crackers VC, written, directed and performed by future novelist Eleanor Dark, all student productions before 1982 were short one vital ingredient – boys. The students either had to dress up as boys, or during the SCEGGS Redlands era, borrow boys from nearby Shore or North Sydney Boys’ High.

In 1982, four years after Redlands became coeducational, the School had its first two Yr 12 boys and a smattering of boys in Yrs 9, 10 and 11. It was enough for the School to be able to stage its first legitimate coed musical, Bye Bye Birdie in Redlands Hall. As now, it was a full- scale production involving staff, students and parents.

In 1985 the Secondary School production of Godspell rivalled the ground breaking Bye Bye Birdie in terms of effort and results. With a highly competitive audition process and five sold out shows, it cemented the popularity of the Redlands Musical.

Keep Learning and Stay Connected

We’ve been really focused on connecting with our students at home this week. Whilst we have not had the significant numbers of students isolating at home as other schools, we are cognisant of our students who are currently learning from home because they either have Covid-19 or are a household contact. It isn’t much fun being at home! One way to maintain normalcy is to do the typical things we would do in any normal day, and for our students that is engage with learning and stay in contact with teachers, tutors and friends. Our Academic Deans have been zooming students who are learning from home, and yesterday Ms Anna-Marie Rolon, did four back-to-back zooms with students in Yr 7 to 10. I spoke to Anna after the zooms and she was buzzing with excitement. She reported that the students were keen to ask questions, see and hear from each other and feel reassured about upcoming learning tasks and assessments. The Subject Coordinators have already considered assessment contingencies to take us through to the end of this term, and these are currently being communicated to students impacted by Covid-19.  If your child has any questions or concerns about their learning from home, please do encourage them to reach out to their Academic Dean or their Subject Teacher. They are available to support and understand it is a tricky time.

The Musical is Finally Here!

We wish the following students all the best this evening in their premiere performance of the Shrek, The Musical! If you haven’t yet secured tickets, they are available here.

A significant amount of energy, enthusiasm and sheer hard work has gone into this year’s musical and I want to acknowledge and thank the students and staff for their dedication and commitment. The desire to deliver an exceptional performance has been made more complicated by the pressures of a challenging year and the constancy of Covid-19. The Musical is most certainly something to look forward to, and enjoy, at the end of hectic term.

Yr 8 Camp

Year 8 students have a wonderful week of activities planned at Yarrahapinni on the mid-North coast. They plan to be hiking in National Parks, exploring the Nambucca River by canoe and even have surf lessons! In our sequential Camp programme, students are building on the camping, cooking and outdoor skills learned last year by completing a journey for the first time.

Fundraising Appeals

Currently we have two appeals, being led by Year 12 House Captains from Cowper and Roseby.

Gotcha4Life

Cowper House Captains Katina and Cristian are hosting a Cowper sausage sizzle today, raising funds for ‘Gotcha4Life’, a mental fitness charity. This fantastic not-for-profit raises funds to deliver mental health programs that engage, educate and empower local communities.

They interviewed Gus Worland about Gotcha4Life. Watch the video here. There is some focus on suicide but, overall a very positive message.

The sausage sizzle went well at lunch time today!

Redlands UNICEF Ukraine Fundraising Appeal

Redlands is fundraising to help children and their families in Ukraine. The Redlands community can support by:

  1. Donating to the Redlands UNICEF Ukraine Fundraising Appeal
  2. Roseby Bake Sale, Week 9, Monday 28 March. Roseby Students are encouraged to bring baked goods to sell. All students should bring their appetites and lots of money to purchase baked goods. A big thank you to Roseby House Captains Emmi and Sam for support of this initiative.
  3. International Day Activity & Food Stalls, Tuesday 5 April. In Week 10, students will be running activity and food stalls during lunch. Students are able to sign-up to host a stall here. See the Languages section of Note Day for more information.

By contributing to our fundraising efforts, the students will be helping UNICEF provide access to basic services including water and sanitation, immunization and health care, schooling and learning, psychosocial support, and emergency cash assistance for children.

Yr 7 Study Skills

On Monday 29 March from 6.00 – 7:30pm, Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services will be delivering a webinar for Yr 7 students and parents.

This year the Study Skills evening will involve an online, interactive presentation on Zoom. The skills to be covered in the evening include:

  1. Improving the space where you work at home and managing distractions.
  2. Organising resources for school and learning about independent learning.
  3. Creating an afternoon routine and managing time so you can balance schoolwork and activities.
  4. Planning and managing workload and assessments.
  5. How to study for a test in high school and the importance of learning to make study notes.

Parents can expect to gain a greater understanding of the tools that students can use to help them achieve academic success, and students can learn how to make the most out of their abilities through simple but effective techniques.  All students are encouraged to attend this Zoom session, accompanied by a parent. As the session is very interactive, the session will be of most benefit when both the student and a parent attend.  We look forward to your involvement in this valuable experience for your child.

Details of this Zoom session follow.

International Day

International Day

Tuesday 5 April

International Day is the day when we celebrate Redlands’ diverse international community and highlight the cultures of the Languages that we teach.

International Day Lunchtime Stalls

At lunchtime, there will be international-themed stalls to celebrate both the cultures of the languages studied and also of students’ own cultures. Students are encouraged to consider running their own stall to share an activity which showcases the culture of their country, or to sell a sweet or savoury snack which is important in their culture. Alternatively, they could demonstrate a traditional dance or musical item from their culture.

Students should express their interest in running a stall by Wednesday 30 March (Week 9).

UNICEF Australia

All proceeds from sales on the day will be donated to the UNICEF Australia Ukraine Emergency Appeal. UNICEF will use these funds to provide access to health care, clean water and education for up to 7.5 million children affected by the crisis in Ukraine.

International Food

At lunchtime there will be an opportunity to sample delicious international dishes from China, Japan, France and Spain provided by the Canteen.

Year 12

As we enter the last few busy weeks of Term 1, we have recently needed to send a lot of important information to Yr 12 parents. Please check your emails for this information. A summary is below:

Half-Yearly Examination Block and Holiday Study Workshops

Students have been given information by our Academic Deans about the upcoming HSC and IB Half-Yearly Examinations upon returning to school in Term 2, and have also been provided with a schedule of holiday study workshops to be run by staff during the April school holidays. This information is also available for them on our Pastoral iLearn page.

Camp

We are all very excited about the upcoming Yr 12 camp in the last week of term – from Tuesday to Friday. Parents should have received a letter providing further information about camp and our COVID-19 safe procedures. A number of us have been busily working to put together a camp schedule of fun activities, ranging from rock climbing to horse riding to yoga. We are also planning evenings such as a trivia night, movie night and a final ‘celebrity dress-up’ Oscar night formal dinner on our last evening. There will be plenty of downtime to bond as a Year Group as well as opportunity to study during the week. I am confident that the camp will provide a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable time for the students and that they will return to Sydney refreshed, motivated and ready to study for their half-yearly examinations. Please ensure you have completed the relevant ‘online’ paperwork you have been requested via email to do.

Redlands Football Team – Report by Callie Forest

Year 11

Redlands win their first round of the Mock Trial against Queenwood!

Last Friday evening, the following Yr 11 students represented Redlands at Round 1 of the Law Society of NSW Mock Trial competition against Queenwood (via Zoom!):

  • Daniel Close – 1st Barrister
  • Harley van der Pluijm – Solicitor
  • Lucy Horton – 2nd Barrister
  • Helena Dracakis – Court Officer
  • Daisy Oliver – Defendant
  • Claudia Lalich – 2nd Witness

Redlands was the Defence Team against Queenwood (the Prosecution team) who had accused our Defendant, Daisy, of assaulting the victim – a Police Officer – by resisting arrest, causing a broken nose. Claudia played the part of Daisy’s partner and gave evidence of her good character. Although the Magistrate ruled in favour of the Prosecution, the Redlands Defence Team won the overall trial on points – 209 to 237. The Magistrate was particularly impressed with Dan’s Opening Statement at the start of the trial, and Lucy’s Closing Statement at the end of the trial. As Solicitor, Harley supported the Barristers throughout the trial, and Helena helped run the trial by swearing in all witnesses and opening and closing the court.

This was the first round and every team member did an excellent job, already comfortable in their roles.

Well done Yr 11 Mock Trial team on the win!

Thank you in advance for your support.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Briar Carter, Alana Mansfield and Maddie Borris who were part of the Redlands Girls Firsts Football team which won the first round of the CIS Cup.

On that note, I do like to include as many student achievements as possible as part of my Yr 11 Note Day entry; however, results from Sport and Cocurricular Activities are not always formally communicated with me. If you would like your child to be featured in Note Day, please email me directly with the achievement. I do value being kept in the loop with any achievements by our Yr 11 cohort, regardless if the achievement is included in Note Day.

COVID-19 Student Support

All Yr 11 students who are at home isolating have the option of setting up a Zoom meeting with either Ms Lucy Benjamin (HSC) or Mr Darren Taylor (IB) to follow up on any class or assessment work they are missing throughout the week. Students should email either Lucy or Darren to arrange the Zoom meeting.

Yr 12 Jerseys

On Tuesday, an email was sent to all Yr 11 parents, carers and students regarding the purchasing of Yr 12 jerseys via flexischools. Over the next couple of weeks,  students will begin the process of trying on sample jerseys and confirming their size. As mentioned in the attachment to the email, all payments of the jersey need to be finalised by Friday 8 April. Yr 12 Jerseys will be given to students in early Term 4.

Leadership and Service Opportunities

A call was made to all Yr 10 last week for students interested in stepping up and further developing their leadership skills by getting involved in various opportunities across the school.  Currently, several students put their hand up to run a stall for International Day next week, some are getting involved in the ANZAC Day Assembly at the start of Term 2 and others devoted time to being in a Redlands promotional video filmed this past Tuesday in the Fahl Garden. There will be several opportunities throughout the year and it is fantastic to see new faces in this area.  Thank you to all students who have already volunteered and I look forward to many more stepping up throughout this year.

Camp Details

Departure:  Dunnet Hall on Allister St (Junior School) 6am arrival on Monday 28 March.

Rapid Antigen Testing, COVID-19 symptoms and arrival at school

All students must take a Rapid Antigen Test on Sunday evening or Monday morning prior to arrival at school. We will require verbal confirmation of a negative test from the students upon arrival at school on the Monday. Confirmation of a negative test is a requirement of attendance at Camp.

If the test is positive, follow normal school and NSW Health procedures and isolate accordingly. If however, your child has contracted COVID-19 in the last 8 weeks they are still welcome on camp, as long as they are out of their 7-day isolation period and symptom free.

If your child is unable to attend Camp for any reason, please email eatkins@redlands.nsw.edu.au and ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au at your earliest available moment.

Face Masks

We ask students to bring 5 disposable face masks to camp. Face masks are required for the bus journey to, from and during the Camp. There will be several bus rides throughout the week so please pack spare masks in case they go missing or get damaged.

Lunch Day 1

Students will need to bring their own nut-free morning tea and lunch for Monday. For the rest of the week there is no need for extra snacks as an appropriate amount of these will be provided.

Phones and Devices

There are to be no phones or electronic devices on Camp so please keep them at home. Updates on arrival time back to Redlands on Friday will be communicated to parents via SMS (roughly 2.30pm).

Yr 8 Vaccinations 2022, Wednesday 6 April

The Northern Sydney Public Health Unit will be holding a NSW Schools Vaccination clinic on Wednesday 6 April to administer dose 2 of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) to Year 8 students who began the NSW Schools Vaccination programme in 2021. This will also be an opportunity to catch up any missed Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis vaccines (dTpa) for students who were unable to attend the clinic 2021. Students new to Year 8 who have not received the HPV dose 1 vaccinations or the dTpa should contact their GP.

Parent Information Kits that included an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement were returned to School in 2021. You do not need to complete anything further.

Redlands and The Northern Sydney Public Health Unit have added additional infection control measures within the program to help minimise viral transmission between students, nurses, and school staff.

In preparation of the clinic:

  • Students who are not feeling well must be kept at home. Students who are sick, especially with any acute respiratory symptoms, will not be vaccinated. The nurse will perform a pre-vaccination assessment and determine the student’s suitability to be vaccinated. Catch-up vaccinations for these students can occur at the next clinic.
  • Students must bring a mask to wear at the clinic
  • Students will be asked to use hand sanitiser upon entry to the clinic and before returning to their classroom.
  • Students will arrive in smaller groups to prevent close-proximity queuing, and physical spacing will be applied.
  • Please ensure your child has had a good breakfast on the morning of the vaccination.

A Record of Vaccination card will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Please note that if a student is absent from this clinic, they will be offered any missed doses at a subsequent clinic. They do not need to go to their GP for these vaccines. Visit www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation for further information and translated copies of the Vaccination Information Kits.

Save the Date – Year 7 Movie Night

On Friday 27 May Yr 12 students will be running a Movie Night at school for our Year 7 students. This is a fantastic event 6-8pm and the initiative will be led by Yr 12 students Katie Wightwick and Billy Thomas. More information will be forthcoming but please do save the date.

We are still talking about Yr 7 Camp!

As we reached the top of Mount Kosciusko, I felt the fresh mountain air brush my face. We all stood, gazing at the world below, all realising how small we really are. The view was unreal. It was as though we had stepped inside a painting, with luscious green rolling hills, the warm sun pouring down upon us and nothing but kids beaming with smiles, amazed at what we could achieve. After we finished staring at the incredible view, we raced to the pillar, all eager to be the first to touch it. Not only was I privileged enough to touch the pillar with two of my best friends, but I got to do my handshake with my Bestie on the top of Australia! That moment of accomplishment when we finally reached the top made me feel like I could do anything, which is what camp is all about. Even though we had rough patches, like wet shoes and some rainy conditions, we all grew a little stronger, a little more independent, and a lot more appreciative for warm beds and hot showers!

Chloe Petering – 7RR Tutor Group

My camp highlight was the canoeing with all my friends, we played games and we really had a big bonding experience. We got to learn much more about each other and we got to connect with new people that we haven’t met and more bonding time with our old friends from previous years. The whole camp week was amazing, and I would do it again. The best bit was definitely the canoeing, and just having a laugh with my friend/partner Chloe and versing others in my camp group. After the tiring experience of the canoeing, we paddled back and had lunch. Lunchtime meant we were just hanging and talking and it was nice and chill. That activity would be the thing I will always remember from Yr 7 Camp.

• return the completed consent form to their child’s school.

Parents please ensure;
• your child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic
• your child does not attend school with any symptoms of Covid
• your child brings a mask to wear in the clinic

Absent students
Please note that, to improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered catch-up vaccination for any missed doses. Any catch-up vaccination will be done on the same day as Year 7 and 10 clinics. They do not need to go to their GP for the missed vaccine.

Parents/guardians who later on wish to withdraw their consent after they have handed in the consent form can do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic as a physical card. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Parents can obtain this through the myGov website or the Express Plus Medicare Mobile app. (Anyone aged 14 years or older has to get their own statement.) https://www.health.gov.au/health-topics/immunisation/getting-vaccinated/check-immunisation-history

The dates for vaccination the clinics are:

Visit 1 – Wednesday 6 April: Yr 7 HPV dose 1

Yr 5 Camp

View More Photos Here

What a joy it has been to have our first Junior School camp of 2022 go out this week with Yr 5 enjoying time in the great outdoors. In saying this, I must also acknowledge that there are a group of Yr 5 students who have not been able to attend camp this week due to illness and/or isolation and they have been greatly missed. We wish them well and there is an overnight excursion to Bathurst in Semester Two aligned with Yr 5’s study on the Goldrush era for them look forward to.

I enjoyed a memorable day with the group yesterday and in one day only, I was able to see students involved in mountain biking, canoeing, raft building (and water testing!), a low ropes course, a high ropes course, camp craft, initiative exercises, orienteering, tent set-up (even though they are not camping overnight) and take on the infamous ‘Giant Swing’, my nemesis each year!

We have placed photos on the Year 5 page of Redlands Pulse for families to get a ‘feel’ of the camp so far and I look forward to joining parents as we welcome the group back tomorrow (Friday) at 2.30pm on the Murdoch St side of the campus where there is a larger, designated bus zone.

Parent Cybersafety Webinar

This week, we were delighted to welcome back Yasmin London and David Smith from ySafe to lead both a staff professional learning session and also a parent webinar focusing on specific challenges and opportunities in the digital environment which our Junior School students may encounter, what teachers and parents should know and how to support children’s digital safety and wellbeing.

YSafe were also instrumental in partnering with Redlands to set up Redlands’ Cybersafety Hub which I encourage every family to have a look at and I have shared some of the slides below for all parents to refer to.

Thank you to our eLearning Coordinator, Ms Anagnostu, for organising both session for our community and we look forward to Yasmin coming back to work with students next term.

Family Toolkit from UNICEF

I was grateful to receive this article from one of our parents who works at UNICEF Australia and thought that this would be of relevance to our parent community too. With the crisis in Ukraine escalating, we know that children are asking increasing questions and UNICEF has put together this toolkit for parents and carers to help with conversations with children about the current situation, as needed.

  1. Make time for the conversation and listen to their concerns

Start by inviting your child to talk about what they’ve heard about the crisis in Ukraine or engaging with them when they bring it up. Evidence suggests that having a supportive discussion about a stressful event can decrease distress.

Find out how much they already know and follow their lead. Make sure you are in a safe environment and allow your child to talk freely and honestly. Drawing, stories, and other activities may help to open a discussion. Most importantly, don’t minimise or avoid their concerns. Be sure to acknowledge their feelings and assure them that it’s natural to feel scared about these things. Demonstrate that you’re listening by giving them your full attention, and make sure they understand that they can talk to you and their teachers whenever they like.

  1. Be honest: explain the truth in a child-friendly way

Children have a right to truthful information about what’s going on in the world, but adults also have a responsibility to keep them safe from distress. Use age-appropriate language, watch their reactions, and be sensitive to their level of anxiety. If you don’t know the answers, that’s okay. Depending on their age, you can use it as a time to find answers together. Some of the best resources for child-friendly news updates are Behind The News and KidsNews.

Be conscious of what your child is being exposed to

It might be a morning or evening routine to have the news on at home, but images of destroyed homes and families fleeing can be distressing, explicit and stay with children long after they see them. Be aware of what your little ones are seeing online, on TV or via their friends. Putting child safeguard settings in place on shared computers can be a good idea to limit results that come up if they are searching for answers.

  1. Reassure them with your normal family routines

When we’re seeing lots of troubling images on TV or online, it can sometimes feel like the crisis is all around us. Children may not distinguish between images on screen and their own personal reality, and they may believe they’re in imminent danger. You can help your children cope with the stress by making opportunities for them to play and relax, when possible. Keep regular routines and schedules as much as possible, especially before they go to sleep, or help create new ones in a new environment.

  1. Let them know that kind and dedicated people are doing everything they can to help

It’s important for children to know that people are helping each other with acts of kindness and generosity. Reminding children that there are forces for good in the world is important to help them feel protected and safe. Letting them know that organisations like UNICEF exist especially to protect and deliver emergency supplies to children who are scared or living in dangerous places can settle some of their fears.

  1. Take care of yourself

You’ll be able to help your kids better if you’re coping, too. Children will pick up on your own response to the news, so it helps them to know you’re calm and in control. If you’re feeling anxious or upset, take time for yourself and reach out to other family, friends and trusted people in your community. Make some time to do things that help you relax and recuperate.

  1. Offer them a practical way you can help as a family

Acting as a family can help to reassure your child that they have done something to help the people or situation they are worried about. This can be as simple as drawing a picture, writing to a decision maker, or donating $5 to a charity working in the conflict zone. This can help them to feel like they have done something good to help the situation.

  1. Close conversations with care

It’s important to know that we’re not leaving children in a state of distress. As your conversation wraps up, try to gauge their level of anxiety by watching their body language, considering whether they’re using their usual tone of voice and watching their breathing. Remind your children that they can have other difficult conversations with you at any time. Remind them that you care, you’re listening and that you’re available whenever they’re feeling worried.

Student Health Matters

Please be reminded that if your child has any COVID symptoms they should stay home, even if they may test negative on a RAT. We have had a small number of students arrive after taking Nurofen and then needing to be sent home which presents a risk to other students and staff.

Remote Learning for Students in Mandatory Isolation

As has been the case all term, we will continue to provide Remote Learning options for students in mandatory isolation but just as would be the case for any unwell student, please know that there is no expectation to complete this learning if your child needs to rest and recover. At present, we are not offering a hybrid model of teaching for families to choose if they want their child to learn at school or at home and class teachers will continue to focus their teaching on the students in class.

Harmony Day – Monday 21 March

There was a wonderful sense of connection as students wore a splash of orange on Monday as we recognised Harmony Day, a day that recognises diversity, inclusivity, respect, and the idea that people of all different cultures can make a valuable contribution to our society. My thanks to Mrs Clinton and the wider staff team who were involved in creating some wonderful experiences for our students through the day.

SAVE THE DATE: International Day – Tuesday 5 April

On Tuesday 5 April, our School community will celebrate our global-mindedness and diversity through our annual International Day event. Students and staff can dress up in international dress or colours and teachers will have a series of themed lessons during the day and may invite parents to assist, as needed.

Mosman Youth Awards in Literature 2022

Over many years, Redlands students have enjoyed participation and success in the annual Mosman Youth Awards in Literature, a competition in prose and poetry writing. Now in its 30th year, I share this year’s details for parents and students to consider and class teachers will also encouraging student involvement with this literary opportunity ahead of the closing date of 31 May. Please note that entry forms must be signed by a parent or guardian and not a teacher if the entrant is under 18 years of age.

For an entry form or more information, please click here or call Barry O’Keefe Library in Mosman on 9978 4091.

Junior Debating

As we continue to resume events and activities, it was wonderful for our Junior School debating teams to enjoy their first ever face-to-face debate last week against MLC Burwood. The students have only known Zoom debates in the last couple of years and loved the chance to be able to debate in person as restrictions ease off.

April Vacation Care: 11-22 April 8am-6pm

If you would like your child to attend the April Vacation Care program, please visit the OOSH page on Redlands Pulse from 10am this Friday 25 March preview all information pertaining to the holiday activity schedule and daily requirements.

The Flexischools website will be open for bookings at 12pm next Monday 28 March. Please use the Prep and Junior Vacation Care icon for children in K-6. If you have any queries, please contact our new OOSH Coordinator, Ana Nogueira.

For further important details about OOSH, please see the section below.

Reminder – Cutlery Library Donations

If you, or anybody you know, have any spare spoons or forks, please donate it to our Junior Campus cutlery library. A container is located outside the canteen for any donations.

Whilst the bamboo cutlery currently being used is biodegradable, it is still single use. A cutlery library would allow the canteen staff to reuse the spoons and forks, further reducing our carbon footprint at Redlands.

Uniform Shop

The shop will be open this Saturday 26 March for winter uniform fittings and we still have appointments available. Please click HERE to book and view other opening days for the upcoming holidays.  We recommend if your child needs to try on uniforms, you make an appointment to avoid having to wait in a queue.

If you simply need to go up a size and know what you need, you may also order online at www.flexischools.com.au or come to the shop and purchase these items.

We are expecting a delivery of blazers next week and will contact those who have pre-ordered or requested a call to advise they have arrived.

We are happy to help you with any questions regarding winter uniform requirements or sizing, so please call us on 9968 9850 or email uniformorders@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Important OOSH Information

We welcome Mrs Ana Nogueira to Redlands as the new K-6 OOSH Coordinator. Ana’s most recent role was with TeamKids where she was OSHC Mentor Program Manager and Vacation Care Area Manager. Ana aims to bring a depth of skill to establishing an OOSH program that caters for both K-2 and 3-6 students.

For those new to accessing our OOSH facility, ACECQA (Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority) guidelines govern the way the facility is run and operated on our Redlands campus. There are seven quality areas that make up the National Quality Standard for an OOSH facility. Services are assessed and rated by their regulatory authority against the NQS and given a rating for each of the 7 quality areas and an overall rating based on these results. You can access further information about these standards on the back wall in the OOSH room or by accessing the ACECQA website acecqa.gov.au.

There are often ACECQA updates that our families are required to be informed about. Ana will be using the weekly Note Day forum to share this information with our community.

Families currently using OOSH

As a matter of urgency for compliance requirements and for your child’s ongoing enrolment at Redlands OOSH, please fill in these ASECQA forms and return them to anogueria@redlands.nsw.edu.au by Friday 31 March.

Ana will be conducting an OOSH Zoom session next term where information will be shared about ACECQA guidelines along with what the Redlands OOSH facility will be focusing on in our after school care program. In the meantime, if you have any questions for Ana, please contact her or you may find your answer below:

What forms do I have to fill in as soon as possible for my child to continue using OOSH?

All OOSH families are required to send an updated Medical Action Plan and to fill in a Risk minimisation and communication plan. Please click on the above link for forms.

Doesn’t the school have this information already in their system and I think I’ve done this before?

An OOSH facility operates under ACECQA guidelines, not NSW schools standards, therefore a separate data base is required to meet OOSH’s governing standards. These forms have been updated so parents and carers are asked to ensure all details are up to date and correct for future compliance checking.

What about if my child uses medication?

If your child attends OOSH, families are asked to supply the OOSH team with this medication. This will mean that your child will have their medication at either Prep or Junior School Receptions for day use at school and the other with after school access in the OOSH room. Again, this is an ACECQA requirement.

When do I need to return the forms as well as provide any medication to the OOSH Coordinator?

The forms and medication are to be returned to the OOSH Coordinator by Friday 31 March please.

Parents and carers must hand the medication directly to Ana in its current box please and can email the forms directly to anogueria@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

It is now a requirement for any OOSH enrolment to have this paperwork completed and lodged with the OOSH facility.

Thanks to all our families for completing and returning this paperwork by 31 March.

Parents and carers must hand the medication directly to Ana in its current box please and can email the forms directly to anogueria@redlands.nsw.edu.au

It is now a requirement for any OOSH enrolment to have this paperwork completed and lodged with the OOSH facility.

Thanks to all our families for completing and returning this paperwork by 31 March.

April Vacation Care: 11-22 April 8am-6pm

Harmony Day

Harmony Day was a sea of colour, vibrancy, music and activity as the Prep and Junior Schools ‘united’ to celebrate our cultural diversity.

It was uplifting to see our students engaged and collaborating with each other as they participated in a variety of activities – including learning origami with our Japanese students, working on a collaborative group weaving project, kicking up their heels dancing the French Can-can, drawing and designing a communal Rangoli art display and attending a Mexican Mariachi music lesson with our Spanish teacher as well as being immersed in classroom cultural book, poetry readings and art activities.

Our Prep students loved wearing a touch of orange and dancing to the music on the oval at the lunchtime “it was such a fun dance party”.

“I loved making the fish and decorating the reception area together”.

An uplifting day in our school community that celebrated diversity in the community as well as in our own Redlands community.

Fun Run

Last Friday, we enjoyed the inaugural Redlands K-2 Fun Run on campus. Miss Longworth, along with Miss Davis and Ms Dongas, provided a challenging and fun course that suited all abilities. It was truly wonderful to see the excitement on the faces of every child as they walked up to the start line. With the assistance of our Yr 4 and Yr 2 students, every child in Redlands Prep participated in this event!! Please click on the link below to watch the Fun Run from Bertram Haines’s (Yr 4 helper) go pro! Such a great day and we can’t wait to do it all again next year.

View Here

Bertram has also written about the Fun Run from his perspective!

Three, two, one, go! The sound of all the Prep Schools’ feet hitting the ground sounded as if it were a stampede of elephants. Legs were burning, throats were throbbing, and I was sure that all anyone could think about was the finish line! I got my camera ready to catch the action.

Last Friday was the first ever Prep Fun Run and no one knew what to expect. The children walked around the course with their teachers to make sure they knew the way, warmed up and then they were off. They ran around the course as many times as they could in about 15 minutes. My job with to film the action so it could be shared with the Redlands community.

As I looked around, there were plenty of red and sweaty faces but also plenty of smiles and words of encouragement. Everyone was feeling tired and felt like they could not keep going but when the students saw the esky, filled to the brim with ice blocks they got a little jolt of energy and crossed the finish line.

The Fun Run was a success! Everyone had fun and that is all that matters.

Summer Tennis

Another washed out Saturday marks the end of the NSTA Summer Tennis competition. Although the rain caused many interruptions to training and weekend matches, there was still a lot of talent displayed and all students should be proud of their efforts this season.

Congratulations to Team 21 & 22 for finishing 2nd in their respective divisions! Unfortunately, because the round was washed out neither team had the chance to compete for 1st place. Regardless, the School is proud of both teams on their achievements.

Team 21 – Jackson Doyle, Finnegan Drew, Torren Jackman, Ryan Chen

Team 22 – Alex Arnold, Annie Zhang, Chris Szeto

This coming Saturday is the final of the Tennis Northern Beaches competition, where we have Team 1 playing for 1st place and Team 2 playing for 5th place.

We would like to wish both teams good luck for the weekend!

Football

The Girls Football had a great win in the first round of the CIS Cup last week against Sydney International Grammar. With a massive win they confidently move onto Round 2 where they will face Pymble Ladies College in Week 1, Term 2.

The Boys Football had a fantastic win in Round 2 of the CIS Cup against Cranbrook with a thrilling 1-0 win. They are now moving onto Round 3 of the CIS Cup!

Netball

It has been great to see so many players (slowly) making their way back onto the court, the trials have certainly made it difficult for the selectors with a number of players certainly impressing. A reminder that there are games this Saturday at NBISC, with the Seniors at 8am, Inters at 9am and Juniors at 10:15am, there will be draft teams sent out tomorrow for the games.

With a number of people missing from the trial process we will delay naming some teams until we feel we have seen enough of the students, there will be more trial matches scheduled for next weekend (Saturday 2 April), with the timings for these to be confirmed.

It has been great to see our Hockey players back in action over the past two week in preparation for the upcoming season. A reminder that all trials and training sessions are compulsory for students registered for Hockey as their Winter Sport.

AFL

Redlands acquires two AFLW Players to its Coaching Ranks!

We are extremely pleased to announce that Redlands AFL will have two current AFLW players coaching the girls teams this year. Ally Morphett and Isadora McLeay will be leading the Girls program starting next week. Ally is from Wagga Wagga and played the first four games before injuring herself and missing the back end of the year. She has a lot of experience coaching Junior Girls teams in ACT.

Isadora is a North Shore local who was drafted this year out of the AFL Sydney competition and has previously coach at the Mosman Swans and lead their Junior Girls program. She was on target to debut RD 1 before tearing her ACL.

Both Ally and Isadora will be playing for local senior team North shore Bombers during the off season while coaching and developing the Redlands program. We welcome both to the Redlands coaching team and look forward to them passing on their skills and knowledge to our players.

Winter Tennis

Winter Tennis training kicked off with a bang last week. There is some amazing talent coming through the ranks and as the training continues for the rest of the term, I’m sure we are yet to uncover the full potential of these students.

If you have any questions about winter tennis, please contact Luke Jeffery ljeffery@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Rugby

Despite the weather Redlands Rugby has had a wonderful start to our preseason with a number of new faces matching up with some of our more experienced players.

It has been fantastic to hear from our coaches about some of the standout performances from each Age-Group especially across our Under 16s and Opens Squad. Henry Charles has been a brilliant new player into our Under 16s, with his athleticism and speed matching brilliantly with some of our strongest players in the program, Hugo Scott and Kane Thompson being two players who spring to mind.

In our 1st XV and Opens, Will Pearson and Josh Hicks continue to be players to watch. Both players were exceptional last year and performed brilliantly representing Redlands in the ISA Under 16s A Squad. Will brings an incredible running game to our program, mirrored perfectly with Josh’s elusiveness and speed in attack. Look for these players to form a deadly combination in our 1st XV this year.

For next week, we will continue to build on the skill and development across the group, with trial games and also our Berry Camp for our 1st XV right around the corner.

There will be a representative from ProFit Mouthguards at the school next week, Wednesday 30th of March. ProFit Mouthguards are professionally fitted onsite using dental moulds and offer protection for teeth and gums whilst also reducing the severity of concussions caused by contact sports.

http://www.profitmouthguards.com.au/home.php

For any student wishing to be fitted please contact Mr Jack Gooding directly on jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au. There will be a short form to complete which needs to be brought in on the day. These mouthguards are recommended for all Winter Representative Sports in Redlands including Hockey, Football and Rugby.

Fitness Centre

The Redlands Fitness Centre will be back open from Monday next week!!

With Winter Sport Trials and preparation for the ISA Winter Sport Season underway, the Fitness Centre is the perfect space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday–Friday and start promptly at 6:30am. brilliant numbers across the sessions with over 35 students attending our Wednesday morning session this week.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

General Sport Information

Wet Weather

If training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Yr 8-12)
In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Yr 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Yr 7)
In the event that yr 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.10pm and participate in cohort-based activities.

Thursday afternoon – early departure (Yr 8-12)
As we attempt to limit student mixing indoors, there will be no classroom supervision for students who do not have any scheduled sport training on a Thursday afternoon. Therefore, students who do not have training on Thursday afternoon will have permission to leave early.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Cross Country

Our annual Junior School Cross Country carnival took place at a new venue this year, Tunks Park Cammeray due to construction of the Harbour Connect Tunnel at Cammeray Golf Club. In the first of our big three carnivals there was much excitement leading up to the first event especially on a new course with no more hills which students were extremely excited about. Even those students who were not impressed with the longer run seemed to enjoy running though the muddy patches on it once they got started. Thank you to the parents and families who attended and supported the carnival.

Unlike other major carnivals students participate and compete in their grade but by using the entrant number system we can break down the results into age groups where we select our representative team from.

Winning House

With points awarded to all place getters and participants in both events congratulations to the winning house for 2022.

1st Place                  Dumolo 252

2nd Place                Roseby 236

3rd Place                 McDouall 218

4th Place                   Cowper 208

Thank you to the House Captains who assisted on the day motivating, cheering and supporting their house. Congratulations to Dumolo House who won the house cup with points based on both the Championship Event and the Fun Run Event. Congratulations to captains Thomas Bentley and Catherine Andrews who led their team to victory.

Age Champions

The below results are from the Championship Races and will be presented their ribbons and medals shortly. While grades ran together on the day the use of electronic timing allowed me to split the results back into age groups for the purpose of presentation. These students will receive their awards at our next assembly, Tuesday 29 March.

Gymnastics Open Day

In exciting news we can confirm that IPSHA Gymnastics will be up and running later this year. At this carnival Schools are invited to send through a school gymnastics team in a variety of disciplines for both boys and girls from Grade 3 through to Grade 6.

In 2022, Redlands Junior School is going to be involved in this carnival after a two year COVID break and we would like to train up and send a team of boys and girls to compete at this one off carnival held in August.

Similar to our Athletics and Cross Cross Country Carnivals we will provide training for this Gymnastics Carnival and these sessions will take place in and around your child’s current Non Rep and or Rep Sport with no clashes.

As you would be aware we have a new contractor, Aussie Gems Gymnastics ,who are running our recreational program during Wednesday Sport as well as coming on board for this new representative gym program (IPSHA Gym).

OPEN DAY- COME AND SEE WHAT IT IS ABOUT
On Saturday 21 May from 12:00pm- 1:30pm Aussie Gems are opening their facility for Redlands students and their parents who may be interested in giving IPSHA Gymnastics a go this year to come and watch some demonstrations, give some of the equipment a go and see if they want to pursue it as a sport.

Music

Jazz in the Garden, Shrek the Musical, Piano Competitions, Battle of the Bands…  It seems wherever we look around our great school, Music is flourishing.

Jazz in the Garden – a smash hit!

The inauguration of the Fahl Garden stage as a Music venue was a spectacular success, with the clouds parting just for us. The beaming sun was all but outshone by the extraordinary talent of our Jazz musicians who pulled together this top quality show in the four weeks since rehearsals commenced. After two years of disruption, this event was more than a success – it was a statement of the brilliant things ahead.

Keep your eye out for this event next year. It’s set to become a community favourite!

Shrek the Musical

We wish our Redlands singers and instrumentalists all the best for this week’s performance of Shrek at The Concourse Chatswood. Congratulations to the Drama team for their production efforts, and to a host of Music Tutors and teachers who have jumped on board to support students in bringing this show to its opening night! Toi toi all!

Battle of the Bands – Monday 4 April!

The next big calendar event for Junior and Secondary Schools is the annual showcase event for our Rock Bands.

Finalists and families have all been emailed directly.  In managing the current climate, guests will rotate through the Edwards Auditorium across the night – depending on which of the three sessions their child/friend is participating in.  Junior Rock bands are our opening acts (non-competitive), and there is an allocation of 4 tickets per Junior student available by clicking the link.

After the Junior Rockers perform, Divisions 1, 2 & 3 are open for parents and friends to attend, but due to the number of Senior performers, there will be a limit of 2 tickets per performer to ensure we avoid over-crowding.  All guests are required to wear a mask when indoors.

Acclaimed Australian musician Travis New is looking forward to being with us to judge the night!

Prime your 90’s throwback outfits… It’s going to be incredible.

OPENING ACT & DIVISION ONE – 6PM |
DIVISION TWO – NOT BEFORE 7.15PM |
DIVISION THREE – NOT BEFORE 8PM |

A Picture of Practice!

It was my joy to hear the Yr 4 Gold Orchestra this afternoon (the extension stream of the Year 4 curriculum Music Instrumental Program) and the music they made was glorious!  I commended them all for how hard they must have worked to sound as accomplished as they did. No one accidentally sounds good… this ensemble’s pride in their work was obvious, and they are being so capably under the baton of Ms Susan-Gai Anderson and oversight of Ms Katherine Moses as our well-loved Head of Junior Campus Music.

Visual Arts

As Visual Arts Captain it has been very exciting to see Visual Arts students engaging with Extracurricular Visual Arts classes on campus, all together again this year. Here are some photos from Extracurricular Visual Ceramics and Extracurricular Visual Painting this week.

Emilie Leroux – Painting + Ceramics Students

Recently, many students from both the Junior School and the Secondary School entered a competition called Australia Art in Nature. The winners of this competition were featured in a music video which was released on World Water Day on 22 March. Congratulations to everyone who entered. You can view the final video and website via the following links:

We are also excited to announce the introduction of Visual Arts pockets. In addition to the usual two years of commitment, students will also have to enter Art competitions or participate in school-based exhibitions. This is a great reward for those students who spend many hours in the Art Studios outside of class hours.  As emerging artists, it is important to enter Art competitions to start to get our works seen in galleries and potentially win prizes or sell works.

Here are some upcoming art competitions including our local Mosman Youth Art Prize. Redlands students have had great success in this exhibition in the past and I encourage you all to enter.

Mosman Youth Art Prize – Entries Close 3 May

JM Academy Mocktail Film Awards

Reelise Film Festival

RACI Chemistry and Art Competition

We will continue to keep you updated about upcoming Art competitions for students to get involved in throughout the year.

Another exciting opportunity is the National Art School workshops in the coming holidays. They offer a large variety of courses for all ages.
