Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence (RKMAIR)

This year we are delighted to showcase the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection. The Redlands Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years, is a remarkable collection of artworks reflecting and documenting contemporary practice in Australia and New Zealand. Redlands now has a unique and valuable teaching collection which includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty and Lindy Lee to name but a few.

This is also an opportunity to meet with Cameron Robbins who is leading the Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence program 2019. Cameron will be at Redlands working with students and staff creating a site-responsive artwork, connecting with the natural conditions and the built landscape, including the current redevelopment on the Senior Campus.

From the Principal

I wish to congratulate our Rowing crews for their outstanding results achieved at the NSW Schoolgirl Head of the River and NSW Schoolboy Head of the River at the Penrith International Rowing Centre last weekend.

Our Girls crews achieved 3 podium finishes, having qualified for 10 out of a possible 11 A Finals. Our Boys crews achieved 11 podium finishes in their 24 events. Overall our Boys achieved 5th place out of 13 schools and our Girls achieved 12th out of 40 schools, and 4th overall in the Senior Girls from a field of 20 schools. These are the best results from our rowers in many years.

Congratulations to all rowers, to all their coaches and Coordinator of Rowing, James Petering, and to their parents for all their support during the season.

Thirteen rowers have been selected to represent the School at the National Rowing Championships at Penrith next week and we wish them all the very best at this event.

It was an exciting day for our Preparatory and Junior School students today, with the opening of our newly-turfed Junior Campus Oval. This will be used for PE lessons, Sports training and Junior School Interschool Football matches, as well as providing space for our Junior Campus students to expend their energy during recess and lunchtimes.

Head of Secondary School

Christchurch

As news filtered in on Friday and over the weekend about the horrific terrorist attack in Christchurch, which left 50 men, women and children dead and many more injured, I struggled through a mixture of emotions. Firstly, I felt shock and incredulity as the details of the tragic and harrowing events came to light. I then felt a mixture of grief and anger as the reality of the hateful, callous and evil acts sunk in. And as I reflected more on these events and the world that has bred this extremist, white supremacist terrorism, I felt a mixture of hopelessness and frustration at the way various leaders, commentators and individuals around the world have created an undercurrent in society that has spread fear and ignorance, leading to a rise of extremist ideologies, hate-fuelled trolling and racist or sexist abuse.

However, over the past few days, this hopelessness has been turned to hope and renewed resolve to counter this reality. This hope comes from seeing the strength, compassion and humanity of New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Arden, as she leads her country through the grieving and healing. This hope comes from listening to commentators such as Waleed Aly sharing their honest and emotional reflections on these events. And this hope comes from interacting with the community of students at Redlands, a community of students from a rich tapestry of nations, ethnicities and religions, who illustrate a genuine love, compassion and respect for each other in their daily interactions. This diversity is truly a strength of Redlands.

This week there has been Pastoral time for students to reflect on the events of Christchurch. We realise that events like this can affect all of us, but especially young people, in different ways, so we would remind you that your sons or daughters can turn to the Pastoral support team at School if needed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the many victims and their families and anyone affected by these events.

Safety Around Our Streets

We ask parents to please take extra care when dropping off or picking up students around the Senior Campus as the safety of our students and members of the wider community remains our highest priority. Once again, we ask parents to use the designated drop off and pick up zones on Waters Road and Winnie Street near the Senior Campus or Allister Street and Murdoch Street near the Junior Campus. We also remind parents when dropping off or picking up students of some of the following expectations: not to double park on Hampden Avenue; not to pull into the bus parking lot in front of the Adams Centre; not to park or stop illegally on Military Rd; or not to pull into the small Senior Campus parking area off Military Road in front of Lone Oak. North Sydney Council parking rangers regularly patrol the areas around the School to enforce the parking and traffic regulations.

Rowing

I would like to congratulate all of our rowers who competed at the NSW Schoolgirl Head of the River and NSW Schoolboy Head of the River at Penrith on the weekend. Overall, we had arguably our most successful results in Redlands history across these prestigious competitions. In the NSW Schoolgirl Head of the River, we had three podium finishes, ten A final qualifications out of a possible 11 events and, even though we were up against many of the much larger all girls’ schools, finished 12th overall out of 40 schools and 4th in the Senior point score out of 20 schools. In the NSW Schoolboy Head of the River, we had 11 podium finishes out of 24 events, three top three results in the Yr 8 races and, once again even though we were up against some of the much bigger all boys’ schools, finished 5th overall out of 13 schools competing. Thank you to all of the coaches and parents who supported our rowers over the weekend and throughout this successful season.

Sports Luncheon

We are very excited to be holding our inaugural Redlands Sports Luncheon, celebrating 120 years of Redlands Sport, on Friday 5 April from 12.00 – 4.00pm at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli.

This Luncheon is open to all Redlands parents and alumni and provides a great opportunity to celebrate the integral value of sport to the Redlands community and its students of the past, present and future.

We are delighted to announce our guest speakers, past Redlands students, who will share their very inspiring journey during this luncheon, Karyn Gojnich (Davis), Class of 1978 (Olympic Sailor, Redlander and former Redlands parent), Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987 (Olympic Rower), Lachlan Mackay, Class of 2000 (Rugby: Wallaby) and Holly Crawford, Class of 2001 (Olympic Snowboarder).

Tickets are $130 per person and include a gourmet two course meal and beverages. Limited spaces are available so don’t miss out, book now!

Languages

Two Latin students from the Class of 2018, Liam Woolsey and John Economides (Dux of IB), volunteered last week to help Latin students of all Year Groups mark the Ides of March, the anniversary of Julius Caesar’s assassination. Their visit was a suggestion from the boys themselves and reflects the enthusiasm and generous collegiality of our Latin student community. John and Liam taught lessons on Latin love poetry using the SmartPanel to point out grammar, context and rhetorical techniques. They answered students’ questions on university life and shared their study tips with Yrs 11 and 12. All Year Groups gathered along with Languages Coordinator, John Holden, for a party at lunchtime with food, games and some spontaneous, competitive grammar table reciting. Students were also able to each take home a donated antique Latin book. These copies of Caesar, Ovid, Horace and Virgil date from 1890 to 1960, many annotated with the cursive handwriting of previous generations of Latin students. It was heartwarming to see the excitement of our junior Latin students enjoying these artefacts and attempting to translate very advanced Latin.

Service and Social Engagement

Cambodia 2019

This week the students travelling to Cambodia at the end of the year had their first meeting. Over the course of the year they will be meeting twice a term to plan and prepare for the trip. Their first priority is getting their planning underway for preparing to support the Battle of the Bands event. During the year ahead they will be committing considerable time to learning about the country, engaging in the social issues and developing a deeper appreciation and anticipation for the trip itself. They will also kicking off their fundraising efforts for the year ahead.

Fiji 2019

Students travelling to Fiji will also be gathering for their first meeting in the next few weeks. They will be starting their planning and thinking about how to be well prepared for their trip in the October school holidays. Stay tuned to hear about their progress over the next few months.

Battle of the Bands Friday 4 April

Auditions are underway for this important event in the Redlands Music calendar. Again this year the students travelling to Cambodia will be selling tickets at school in the week before and on the night. Adult tickets $10 and student tickets $5. Students will also be organising the refreshments before the event and during the interval. Lots of Redlands talent will be on display.

Tickets will be on sale on the Senior and Junior Campuses and also on the night.

Mother’s Day Classic Reminder

Another reminder to register for the Redlands team on the MDC site. It’s time to get your group together and get training. There are 59 days to go until the the big day, Sunday 12 May.  Over recent years, Team Redlands has slipped on the leaderboard of competing schools so our honour is at stake! This is a wonderful family-oriented event with categories for serious runners through to fun runners of all ages. Proceeds raised from this event are donated to Breast Cancer Research.

Don’t forget to purchase your Redlands pink caps and a new pink Team Redlands tshirt from the Uniform Shop, all profits going to the MDC. All Redlands winter sports teams are also encouraged to incorporate this event as part of their training and team building.

Register your interest in joining Team Redlands here. You will need to complete the registration process nearly all they way to the payment stage before you can select to join the Redlands team (password = Shine).

Yr 9 Social Engagement

This Year Group are focusing on social inequality this year and at the moment they are particularly looking at gender inequality. They are going to build on our meeting with Room to Read and see what they are able to do to make a financial contribution to the education of girls. $365 will fund a girl in school for a year, so it will be wonderful to see how many girls we can support!

Pastoral Care

This week, Tutors continue to meet with students for individual Pastoral check-ins. These include discussions related to their wellbeing, coping strategies, and broadening of their personal support networks.

Achievement

Our rowers performed exceptionally well over the weekend and the heavy downpours did little to dampen their spirits. Jared Bowden, teamed with Alexander Verschoor (Yr 10), Matthew White (Yr 11) and Tom Morris (Yr 11), secured second place in the 2nd Coxed Quad Scull. Zoe Kimber and Alec Price also achieved pleasing results in their respective races. The secret behind their elegant, unison movements is training six times a week, most of which occurs early morning. Their dedication to the sport, strong teamwork, team spirit and personal organisational skills are impressive and exemplary. Well done!

Musical Strictly Ballroom

Our School Musical has always been a fun event with a large cast and loads of great upbeat song and dance numbers. This year is no exception. Twenty Yr 12s are involved in this production with different roles as cast members, production and props crew or the make-up team. On top of their busy school work schedule, these students have rehearsed every Monday afternoon, Tuesday lunch, Friday afternoon and all day Sunday since the beginning of this year to prepare for the show next week! Tickets are selling fast and we hope you will all come along and enjoy the classic romantic comedy Strictly Ballroom.

Student Parking

Students are reminded to park according to the road rules. If there are painted lines on the road, you are not allowed to park over the top of them. If you do, you are in danger of receiving a parking ticket. Please also be mindful that you do not leave an unreasonable amount of space in front of or behind your vehicle when you park. We ask all students to be respectful of our local neighbours to not encroach over driveways.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

I have noticed recently that some Yr 9 students are looking very tired at school. This is understandable given how active a lot of them are and how many extracurricular activities they are involved in. It seems teenagers of today pack so much more into their days than we did as kids. Often, however, research shows that many young teenagers are not getting enough sleep and when I have asked a number of Redlands students how much sleep they are getting, it is often less than eight hours. I have attached an article this week that provides some useful information regarding teenagers and sleep. Having a son who is going through Yr 12 this year, I have recently had conversations with him about the importance of sleep and how too little can lead to feelings of anxiety and the inability to cope with the everyday stresses of life and school.

Student Achievements

Last Saturday and Sunday some of our Yr 9 girls and boys competed in the NSW Schoolgirl and Schoolboy Head of the River at Penrith International Rowing Centre. A special mention should go to Elizabeth Holtheuer who was placed first in the final of the Schoolgirl Yr 9 Single Scull. In addition, Mia Kloiser-Jones, Sophia Maxwell, Audra Olson and Amber Williams should be commended for their excellent effort in gaining a 7th place in the Final. Both Oliver Hoey and Jack Walsh were in the final of the Schoolboy Yr 9 Single Scull, with Jack placing 4th and Oliver 8th, which was a great effort by the boys.

Room to Read

Louise Colin and Iris Buisman attended a dinner with me last Thursday, where we met Merina Sainju, a graduate of the Girls Education Program in Nepal, along with many volunteers and kind sponsors of the organisation Room to Read. Louise and Iris were inspired by the enthusiasm and gratitude demonstrated by Merina. At one point, Merina was so excited she said to us “I love learning – I want to do a Masters in everything!”. As a Year Group, we hope to form a focus group of leaders who can come up with ideas as to how we can continue to build a relationship with this organisation. Our aim is to help young girls and boys learn to read and have an education that they otherwise would not be lucky enough to have.

Burn Bright

On Monday 18 March students attended a whole day program led by Burn Bright. The program was called Spark and Ignite and I have attached some photos of the day. It involved a lot of fun but it also addressed some really important issues. You can see an overview of the day in the slide attached as a photo.

Social Awareness Program

This week students are continuing to create a presentation regarding their chosen organisation on gender inequality.

Writing Competitions

This term, there are some exciting writing competitions for students to submit their work for public recognition, publication and cash prizes. The Write4Fun 2019 School Writing Competition is open and accepting submissions of original poetry or short stories from Kindergarten to Yr 12. Entry is free and there are fantastic prizes including $1000 cash ($500 to the applicant and $500 to the school) and a choice of either a $500 Rebel Sports voucher, an Xbox One X or PlayStation 4. Entries for this competition close 5pm Sunday 31 March.

We are also pleased to announce that the Stanton Library’s Nan Manefield Young Writer’s Award is accepting poetry or short story submissions from entrants aged 11-18 years. Prizes total over $2000 and all placed entrants receive an invitation to a writing masterclass; submissions close 5pm Friday 12 April.

Finally, the Mosman Youth Awards in Literature are also accepting short story and poetry submissions from Yrs K-12, with cash prizes totalling more than $2000 to be won; entries close Friday 31 May.

These are fantastic opportunities for our students to be recognised and celebrated for their creative writing. For any questions about how to enter, please contact the English Department.

Have a great week!

This Week in Tutor
  • Students participated in activities for the National Day of Action Against Bullying with their Peer Support leaders last Friday. This was a wonderful opportunity to remind students about the definition of bullying, how to handle situations involving bullying and where to go to for support.
  • Yr 7 students participated in the History excursion on Monday to the Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney. Students were engaged and commended for impressive behaviour as they were respectful with the presenters and tried to make the most of this opportunity.
  • Students have revisited conversations around expanding their friendship groups and making new friends, how to navigate iLearn and submit assignments and other key information. Students are encouraged to seek support from their Tutor teachers for additional support with any of these items.
  • Next week, students will be grading their own effort for the first time. Students use a 1 to 5 grading rubric to evaluate their diligence, engagement and behaviour in each class. Students grade their effort for each class and teachers grade effort for each student. This information is invaluable to supportive conversations for success between teachers, students and parents. We will be doing a practice run at our Year Meeting this week. Students will submit their final Effort Grades online next week during Tutor.
  • Students have been introduced to the school’s Credit Point System. Students earn a Credit Point for Getting Caught Being Good. These points go toward House points, Tutor Class points and Individual points in Yr 7.
Announcements and Upcoming Events
  • It was a job well done for students to have completed their first three assessments, Maths, PDHPE and Christian Studies. Congratulations! Please be reminded that students have access to Assessment Notifications via iLearn two weeks prior to each assessment. Teachers also go through assessment details in class and in Tutor. Parents have access to Assessment Notifications via the parent portal.  Students should ensure they know the details of each assessment and ask their teachers and Tutor for support prior to the due date.
  • Prue Salter’s Yr 7 Study Skills Workshop is being held on Tuesday 2 April at 6.00-7.30pm. A message was sent home this week with further information. She is a fantastic presenter and presents specifically to Yr 7 and Yr 11 students. Students have been introduced to Prue Salter’s Study Skills website and discussed their study environment at home to support learning. Students should have this website saved as a favourite for future use: www.studyskillshandbook.com.au. Username: Redlands | Password: 68results
  • Yr 7 will be participating in a Burn Bright Incursion: Recipe for Success on Monday 8 April. This will be an all day event with activities and discussions around motivation, friendships and more. Burn Bright is an amazing program and we are very fortunate they will be working with our students this term.

Let the Games Commence!

It was with great excitement (for students and staff!) that the newly-turfed Junior Campus oval was opened today for our students to use. This oval is a wonderful space and resource that I know will bring great joy to students from in years to come and on behalf of the students, I acknowledge the project’s support from Dr Lennox and the Redlands School Board of Directors, along with other Redlands staff members who have been involved in the project from start to finish.

As we begin to use it more frequently, we are really looking forward to seeing it be used for PE lessons, Sports training, Junior School Interschool Football matches and before and after school activities. Goals are on order for the large pitch and our Girls’ Football teams will play on the smaller pitches this Saturday morning.

Representative Debating

Last Friday night, all of the Yr 5 representative debaters headed to Kincoppal Rose Bay. Half of them debated for their own team (Primary B) but the other half stepped up in place of the Yr 6 team (Primary A), who had been away at camp all week.

Arguing the negative case on the topic That the book is better than the movie, both teams debated with great assurance and poise to record wins. Congratulations to our Yr 5 debaters: Jacob Cartwright, Henry Dobson, Thomas Hooper, Zoe Kerf, Toby Priestley, Roy Rivera and Freya Stasko in what for many of them, was only their second debate.

As communicated in the Debating information letter from Mrs Sharp at the start of the year, please be reminded of the arrangements for the following dates:

  • 26 March – no Debating for all students
  • 9 April – no Debating Club; ISDA rep coaching will go ahead
  • 30 April – no Debating Club; ISDA rep coaching will go ahead
Bandaged Bear Day

A reminder of tomorrow’s Bandaged Bear Day event on our Junior Campus, a charity that Redlands has an important and special connection with. We look forward to supporting the charity in its 30th year raising money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Junior School students will enjoy a teddy bears’ picnic with their buddy class so they are encouraged to bring in a teddy for this occasion. A group of our Year 5 girls who have been part of this fundraiser before are also selling merchandise on the day as listed below so students are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation and extra money should they wish to purchase any items.

Tuesday Cocurricular Clubs

With Learning Review meetings and Yr 5 Camp next Tuesday, Clubs run by teachers will be cancelled next Tuesday 26 March. Teachers have informed their students and students will also be reminded in next Monday’s assembly. They will resume the week after but then not take place in the final week of term as is our practice.

Vacation Care

Ahead of the holiday period, please visit the Flexischools website to book places for your child, should you wish to. Flexischools is the same organisation who run our online lunch orders and uniform purchases so this should be an increasingly familiar system for families to use.

School Musical

Our annual School Musical is a highlight in our Performing Arts calendar and next week around 120 students from Yrs 7-12 will bring Baz Luhrmann’s beloved and award-winning film, Strictly Ballroom, to the stage. Strictly BallroomThe Musical will run from Thursday 28–Saturday 30 March at The Concourse, Chatswood. Tickets are still available for Thursday and Friday nights from the box office.

Junior Campus Oval

After weeks of anticipation and watching the construction and re-design of the Junior Campus Oval, students were excited to be a part of the opening with a cutting of the ribbon. This new surface together with a larger, open area for the students to play will be a wonderful addition to the Campus playground spaces. Before the rain came, Prep students participated in an AFL incursion and enjoyed playing on this new surface. I extend my appreciation and thanks to Dr Lennox, Sarah McGarry, Brad Weatherstone, Robyn Rolfe, Keith Cookson and Lachlan West for their support of this project and through them, the Redlands School Board of Directors. I also thank Ari Guha, Adrian Carter and Tom Kindred for their involvement in the planning stages.

Bugs and Reptiles

Last week Kindergarten and Yr 1 were up close and personal with some interesting reptiles and insects. Together they shared in the importance of conservation and sustainability, and gained an understanding of the Earth’s diverse ecosystem. Students were given the opportunity to interact with reptiles and insects and learn about the vast array of unique animals that call Australia home.

“On Wednesday, we went to a bug incursion. We saw lots of bugs. We saw lots of spiders and a praying mantis’ also a stick insect and a wolf spider. When I was sitting down an insect flew on to my dress. The huntsman spider was camouflaged on a log inside a container. We also saw caterpillars.” Milly Wu Yr 1

“I held a praying mantis. It kept on jumping off me. I even saw a scorpion, but it was only small. There was a spiny leaf insect which was very soft. Just before we left we talked about caterpillars that either change into moths or butterflies.” Sahana Saraf Yr 1

Inspirational Teachers

As teachers of very young children, we often wonder about the impact we have on the students we teach and in what direction their lives have taken them. Ms Cooper was delighted with a surprise visit from a student who was in Two Purple in 1998. After graduating from Redlands, Rupert Perry completed a double degree in Philosophy and Astronomy. He now works in design and technology recently building an experiment called Semi-Conductor for Google Creative Lab. Rupert kindly sent this article in to share his thoughts about the important role his teacher played in his life.

“I’ve always had a pretty poor memory (that’s one thing that even Redlands couldn’t fix), but as soon as I saw Ms Cooper it was as if no time had passed at all, and I was taken back to my childhood. She taught me in Junior School, and was an inspiration for me learning about science, and viewing the world as something that could be played and experimented with. It kind of stuck — I since followed that up with a degree in philosophy and astronomy, and now work in design & technology, programming and building experimental prototypes for a creative lab. It was so lovely to visit again and catch up on old times, and shows that a great teacher in childhood is something that reverberates warmly through your life as a so-called adult. Thanks Ms Cooper!”

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

Redlands will again be supporting the Children’s Hospital at Westmead through their Bandaged Bear appeal. On Friday 22 March, the Junior Campus will hold a Teddy Bears’ Picnic (Preschool included) with buddy classes enjoying lunch together as part of the day’s events and they are encouraged to make a gold coin donation. The Prep School are asked to bring in a teddy, while the older Junior School students will have the opportunity to purchase merchandise. This is a particularly special fundraiser for many in our community and I know that our collective donation will have a significant impact on the lives of many families.

International Day Celebrations

On Wednesday 10 April, Prep will be celebrating International Day. Students may wear any costume or clothing of their choice that reflects another country or culture. A reminder that closed-in shoes and sun-safe clothes are required. The Prep School will be participating in an international dance and cultural incursion, where each Year Group will choose a country to focus on and learn a particular dance.

Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC)

As mentioned in previous correspondence, the Lucy Hill Library staff have placed information on Redlands Pulse about the 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge. The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has begun for 2019 and Mrs Roberts and Mrs Bertinshaw have placed log in details in the back of all Student Planners. Parents are encouraged to go to the online link to start entering books and students have until the last day of August to have all their books entered. Students are encouraged to experience 30 books, either by reading themselves, shared reading of the book or having the book read to them.

The Library staff and all teachers look forward to promoting and supporting students with this reading challenge for 2019.

Easter Hat Parade and Classroom Walk Throughs

On Friday 12 April at 11.30am, Prep classrooms will be open for viewing for parents and caregivers to see some of the wonderful learning that has been taking place already this year. Your children can show you their journals, discuss the displays on classroom walls and guide you through the different learning spaces in the rooms. After this, at approximately 12.00pm, Prep will be holding their annual Easter Hat Parade and parents are very welcome to come and watch the classes. If you wish to participate, we ask that parents create Easter hats with their child at home, prior to this event. The hats can be brought to school on the day and stored in the classroom.

If parents wish to take their child home at the conclusion of the Parade, please inform your class teacher via the Student Planner or Prep Reception in writing. If you are leaving school after the Parade, please collect your child from their classroom and make sure you see the teacher first.

As a reminder to our community, although children giving each other chocolate eggs at school is a lovely idea, we ask that no chocolate eggs or sweets be brought to school. This is to ensure the health and safety of all our students and avoid the sadness associated with missing out or losing a gift. In lieu, hand-made cards would be welcomed.

An Appreciation of Art

Developing a sense of belonging plays an integral part of developing a child’s sense of security when they transition into a Preschool program. Children belong first to a family, a cultural group and a community. Belonging acknowledges a child’s interdependence with others and the basis of relationships in defining identities. For this reason, our first few weeks of Term 1 are often focused on learning who we are and how we fit into this new environment. Orange Class Juniors have been exploring aspects of their own identity and discovering new things about their friends. Picture books have allowed them to identify similarities and differences between students, and portrait painting has encouraged close examination of facial features, whilst exploring a range of media and techniques. Using graphs, they have explored who has the biggest family, whose name has the most letters and who are the tallest and shortest in the class.

Orange Class Seniors have developed a keen interest in the arts this term. Artistic creations are born through the solving of problems. Without even realising it, children who participate in the arts are consistently being challenged to solve problems. Children who paint learn to think with an open mind, to look at situations creatively. They learn to express themselves more deeply through their art and their words. The Seniors have been experimenting with a variety of art techniques and have recently investigated some famous artists. They chose a selection of books on famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh to use as inspiration at the painting table. Orange Class Seniors have produced some unique artworks which are now displayed in the classroom.

Orange Class have also been exploring the school garden. Children learn best when engaging all their senses. When gardening, children can touch and feel the dirt, seeds and flowers, see the vibrant colours and varied sizes of the plants. They can eat the vegetables straight from the garden and smell the scents of the flowers. Allowing all the senses to be involved helps children understand and grasp the concept of gardening along with the mathematical and scientific concepts that go along with it. Orange Class began their enquiry by brainstorming what they already knew, before the School’s Horticulturist Michael, came to speak to the class. Last week the children were very excited when given the opportunity to do some planting. They planted Dwarf Beans and over the coming weeks they will document their growth in a journal.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

Redlands will again be supporting the Children’s Hospital at Westmead through their Bandaged Bear Appeal. On Friday 22 March, Redlands House will hold a Teddy Bears’ Picnic with their 6B buddy class enjoying lunch together as part of the day’s events and they are encouraged to make a gold coin donation. Easter Hat Parade

Orange Class Seniors and Transition Gold will be participating in the annual Easter Hat Parade. Yellow Class Juniors and Blue Class Juniors will watch the event and cheer on their friends. Parents are very welcome to come and watch the classes. The Parade will be held on Friday 12 April at approximately 12.00pm on the Preparatory School oval. To align with Prep School, we ask that parents create Easter hats with their child for the Parade at home prior to this event. We will collect the hats on the morning of the Parade at drop off time. It should be an entertaining morning for all involved and a lovely connection for the Preschool and Prep School. If parents wish to take their child home at the conclusion of the Parade, please inform your class teacher and collect your child from their classroom.

As a reminder to our community, although children giving each other chocolate eggs at school is a lovely idea, we ask that no chocolate eggs or sweets be brought to school. Equestrian

Congratulations to our Equestrian team who represented Redlands at the NSW Interschools Championships at Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park earlier this month. Aanicka Grant (Yr 11) placed 5th in the Secondary 100cm Showjumping, Kodi Tupper (Yr 11) placed 5th in the Secondary Elementary Dressage and Grace O’Toole (Yr 12) and Ruby Holgate (Yr 6) competed proudly in the 80cm and 60cm Eventing respectively.

Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently in a Representative Sport and there are sessions across all mornings Monday-Friday with additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday. Please note that from next week the Fitness Centre will be open from 6.15am with the session starting promptly at 6.30am.

I would recommend that all students looking ahead to their Winter Representative Sport look to use these sessions as a way to prepare physically for their 2019 seasons. Sports such as Football, Rugby and Netball all require a level of strength and flexibility all of which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre.

There will also be more information sent out regarding a High Performance program for some of our athletes across the Representative Sports as we begin to prepare for the winter sport season. This program is designed to track certain athletes through their off-season/in-season, managing their goals and targets for their chosen sports. This program is an individualised program and offers the students a more tailored approach to their conditioning and strength development.

Please speak to Mr Gooding directly or email regarding individualised programs and/or the High Performance program.

Football

Please refer to Redlands Pulse – Football for the most up to date Football information for the season. The 2019 Football Handbook contains information regarding selection policy, key dates, wet weather procedures, and the 2019 training schedule.

Indoor Hockey

Congratulations to Freya Gait (Yr 8) and Eloise Trueman (Yr 8) who were part of the of the U13 All Star Mosman team who took on a very strong Northern Schools team on Sunday afternoon. This was a fantastic effort from the girls who are ensuring that Hockey at Redlands has a strong future!

The Redlands team took on North Sydney 1 on Wednesday night. Looking to continue their undefeated start to the season, they came out firing and jumped out to a 2-0 lead early on. North Sydney came back, but were no match for Redlands, who won 5-1. Redlands take on Ascham this Friday afternoon at Mosman for a chance to top the table in their division.

Netball

Netball teams will start two training sessions a week from Monday 25 March (Week 9). The training schedule can be found on Redlands Pulse – Netball. This will remain in place for the winter sports season. A reminder that both trainings are compulsory for all players and take precedence over any extra curricular activities. For those sessions off site on Tuesdays, training will finish at 5.00pm and return to school by 5.30pm. Those off site on Thursdays, training will finish at 4.00pm and return to school by 4.30pm.

Yrs 7 – 12 Holidays Trainings – open to all players in Yrs 7 – 12

In Week 1 of the April holidays, we will be offering Netball trainings to develop individual skills and game awareness on Monday 15, Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 April from 8.00 – 10.00am in Dunnet Hall.

These sessions will offer coaching in specialist positions including Defence, Centre Court and Shooting as well as fitness and agility. Players need to register for these trainings by Friday 29 March so that player to coach ratios can be organised.

Please click here to register no later than Friday 29 March.

A friendly reminder that the first round of the NSNA games will be held on 6 April and Round 2 will be held on the first Saturday of the April holidays, 13 April. Please organise any holiday departures to leave after your daughter’s Netball match on Saturday 13 April.

Rowing

Last weekend saw our Rowing program take on the best from across ACT and NSW with the Girls Head of the River regatta on Saturday and the Boys Head of the River Regatta on Sunday. Despite the weather, our students were part of what was the most successful Head of the River regattas in recent history for Redlands, with 14 individual medal winning races by Redlands students.

The Girls Head of the River limits students to only one race per student, meaning that we take a very strategic approach to the events entered. Most of the girls’ crews needed to qualify via heats for the A Final, with 10 out of a possible 11 crews doing so through some hard racing. Our Yr 8 and Yr 9 students handled themselves well, with Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9) racing in the Yr 9 Single Scull winning her heat comfortably and then putting on a dominant performance to win the A Final, a huge effort!

Strong performances through the heats saw our senior boats of Zoe Kimber (Yr 12) in the Single Scull and Maddi Howard (Yr 11) and Steph Larcos (Yr 11) progress well through the heats despite their nerves, however the pace in the A Final was too fast for them to challenge for medals. Our best performing crews of the day were our Yr 10 Coxed Quad combinations racing in Div 1 and Div 2. The Div 2 crew of Megan Price, Hannah Tobin, Emily Batemyr and Laura Sidoti coxed by Ema Yasumura (Yr 9) put together the perfect race. Starting well, with every stroke taken they slowly moved away from the field as the race progressed, extending their lead in what was a dominating win; even more so remarkable considering that both Megan and Emily only started Rowing in the recent Summer holidays. The Div 1 crew of Amelie Archer, Kristin Walker, Emily Barrelle, Emily Pashley and cox Sophie Kennedy looked as if they were going to make it back to back wins for Redlands. Once again, they started well and led for the majority of the race, however a fast finishing Pymble managed to overhaul their lead in the final 150m, with our girls wining the silver medal.

The following day for the Boys Head of the River our students had the opportunity to enter multiple events, giving the boys opportunities to race in both crew and small boats. Out of 24 events on the day, the Redlands boys managed to win either a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal in 11 events, a pretty good strike rate!

The depth of our Senior Boys squad was tested with Mitch Simpson from our 1st crew missing the regatta due to illness. After a quick reshuffle of crews the new combination of Nick Wilkes (Yr 11), Max Durrant (Yr 11), Alec Price (Yr 12), Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10) and cox Alec Coney (Yr 11) took on the Div 1 School Boy Coxed Quad with Nick stepping up to replace Mitch. Racing hard early, the boys did everything they possibly could have done early in the race, firmly racing for a medal winning position however they were unable to hold off the charges from the field and narrowly missed the podium with a fast 4th place. Our Div 2 crew of Jared Bowden (Yr 12), Alex Verschoor (Yr 10), Matthew White (Yr 11), Tom Morris (Yr 11) and Xavier Little (Yr 10), with Matt replacing Nick, put on a display with a dominating Silver medal winning race. Despite the last minute setback due to illness, we could not have been prouder of the senior crews results. Alex Holtheuer also had a dominating win in the Senior Boys Single Scull Div 2, racing against boys 1-2 years his senior, another impressive effort!

With only one crew of boys in Yr 9, the odds were always stacked against these lads in the Yr 9 Div 1 Boys Coxed Quad, however their 5th place in the heat meant that they only narrowly missed the A Final. Jack Walsh racing in the Single Scull finished 4th in the Div 2 event, just being pipped at the post for Bronze.

The Yr 8 boys crews had a field day, with all five progressing to the A Final and three out of the five finishing with a podium appearance. The Div 5 crew of Ellery Prescott, Liam Griffin, Douglas Mantell, James Ireland and coxed by Briar Carter pushed into the top 2 places early in their race, finishing with Silver. The Div 3 crew of Chase Vandekreeke, Harley van der Pluijm, Zac Garvey, Angus McLachlan and coxed by Jess Marshall moved away from the pack to win Bronze. Our Div 1 crew consisting of Pat Walker, Daniel Close, Matthew Fry, Finn Woodward and coxed by Charlotte Morrison were one of the stronger performers of the day. Winning their heat, they were in a three way tussle during the A Final, racing their fastest race of the season, they were narrowly beaten by Shore to finish with a Silver medal.

The Yr 8 boys were very classy in their small boat racing, with a Gold medal being won by Pat Walker and Daniel Close in the Div 2 Double Scull; Silver medals by Zac Garvey in the Div 5 Scull, Angus McLachlan in the Div 6 Scull; Bronze medals by Sam Chubb in the Div 2 Scull, Xavier Reid in the Div 3 Scull, Matt Fry and Finn Woodward in the Div 1 Double Scull.

We could not have been prouder of the Redlands students across the weekend. Despite the weather, they were excellent in their support for each other when not racing while achieving some impressive on water results. A huge thank you to our Friends of Rowing committee who not only supplied catering for both days but also put on a BBQ at the sheds post boat unloading.

We still have a number of crews training through to Nationals, we wish these the best of luck for racing net week.

Rugby

The preseason for Rugby is well underway with all squads training across Thursday whilst our Opens Squad have already started their trials for 1st XV. Please make sure to check Redlands Pulse for all updated information for trainings including this Saturday 23 March. On Redlands Pulse you will also find the Player Handbook which explains all expectations of our students, coaches and parents along with uniform requirements and other useful information for the season.

Please speak to Mr Gooding directly or email regarding any information for the 2019 Rugby season.

Swimming

On Wednesday 13 March, 50 strong Redlands swimmers ventured out to Sydney Olympic Park to take part in the 2019 ISA Swimming Championships. We had some great team results with our Junior Girls winning the Division 1 Junior Girls Shield for the first time since 2002! Our Junior swimmers had a great day: Ruby Voyce (Yr 7) won her heats in the 50m Breaststroke and 50m Backstroke and came 2nd in 50m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly and 100m Freestyle; Mikaela Sanger Larsson (Yr 7) won her heat in the 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke; Chloe Jennings (Yr 7) finished 2nd in 50m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke and 3rd in 100m Freestyle; Jasmin Black (Yr 7) finished 2nd in 50m Freestyle; Grace Durrant (Yr 7) finished 2nd in her 50m Breaststroke; Isabella Havryk (Yr 8) came 2nd in her 50m Freestyle heat; Phoebe Cunningham (Yr 8), swimming up an Age Group, won her 50m Breaststroke heat; Sienna Wessels (Yr 8) finished 3rd in her 100m Freestyle heat; the Junior Girls (Sienna, Jasmine, Chloe and Ruby) finished 2nd in their 4x50m relay.

Our Junior boys had some great individual results: Xander Halfen (Yr 7) finished 1st in his 50m Backstroke, and 2nd in his 50m and 100m Freestyle heats; Hamish Campbell (Yr 7) 2nd in his 50m Freestyle heat; Liam McFarlane (Yr 7) 2nd in his 50m Breaststroke heat; Rafferty Heard (Yr 7) 3rd in his 50m Breaststroke.

Our Intermediate Boys and Girls had a strong showing throughout the day: Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10) 1st in the 100m Freestyle and 2nd in her 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly; Samuel Virtue (Yr 9) 1st in the 50m Butterfly and 3rd in his 50m Breaststroke; Tiago Garrido Bulnes (Yr 10) 3rd in his 50m Breaststroke heat; Rachel Kinghorn (Yr 10) 3rd in her 50m Breaststroke heat.

In the Senior divisions Redlands was up against some tough opposition with Riley Felton (Yr 11) finishing 3rd in his 50m Breaststroke heat which was a great result!

I would like to thank the following students who not only swam multiple events but also a number of students swam up an Age Group (or two) to help the team: Dominic Swift (Yr 12), Alec Price (Yr 12), Jennifer Grant (Yr 11), Apsara Lindeman (Yr 11), Maddison Hampton-Vickers (Yr 11), James Reid (Yr 11), Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10), Kirill Shatilov (Yr 10), Gabi Drage (Yr 10), Sophia Justice (Yr 10), Samuel Virtue (Yr 9), Erik Scott (Yr 9), Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9), Sienna Wessels (Yr 8), Joshua Miller (Yr 8), Max Symons (Yr 8), Chloe Jennings (Yr 7), Ruby Voyce (Yr 7) Xander Halfen (Yr 7) and Julius Keller (Yr 7).

We wish to congratulate the following students who have been selected to swim for ISA at the CIS Swimming Championships in May (Term 2).

  • Jasmine Black (Yr 7)
  • Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10)
  • Xander Halfen (Yr 7)
  • Chloe Jennings (Yr 7)
  • Samuel Virtue (Yr 9)
  • Ruby Voyce (Yr 7)
  • Sienna Wessels (Yr 8)
Tennis

This Saturday 23 March is the Finals of Summer NSTA. Redlands will have four teams playing in the Final and will have all other teams playing in a play-off match. Good luck to all teams. Please check the Rhino for the draw and venues for all matches.

Winter Tennis trials continue this week. Training venues for some students will change as we progress through the trials and as teams are selected. These changes will be communicated to those students directly. Play, have fun, enjoy the game!

Touch Football

Redlands Touch Football finished off their Summer Representative season last week with a wonderful awards presentation. There were winners from all teams, with players and coaches all voting for their Best and Fairest and also for the Most Improved from each squad.

It was wonderful to receive all of the votes from the students, with all players emailing through their recommendations. What I found most rewarding was the variety in their reasons for their votes, to see what each player valued as their Best and Fairest or Most Improved. Some students voted that the best player in the team should win the award, some voted that the most positive and motivational should get it, whilst others voted that the player who brought them together as a team should be the clear winner. This mindset across our program is something to be celebrated, with our teams becoming so cohesive, the support for every team player has been, for the most part, so positive and uplifting.

The award winners were as follows.

1st VI: Coaches Award – Aoibheann MacLochlain; Players Player – Sydney Stuckmann
Senior Bs: Best and Fairest – Monique Pascoe; Most Improved – Sophie Hilliar
Senior Cs: Best and Fairest – Elise Lopes De Leao Laguna; Most Improved – Alisha Karunagaran
Junior As: Best and Fairest – Piper Allen; Most Improved – Emma Mahon
Junior Bs: Best and Fairest – Helena Dracakis; Most Improved – Emma Heylbut
Junior Cs: Best and Fairest – Anna Ivanovic; Most Improved – Marie Kurzrock

We also saw the announcement of the Redlands VI, a special group of players picked by the coaches. These players are the best representations of the core values of sport at Redlands demonstrating sportsmanship, teamwork, a competitive drive and a willingness to support others. These girls should be celebrated for how they have carried themselves on and off the field this season.

Redlands VI: Wings – Elise Lopes De Leao Laguna, Mia Boys; Links – Isobel Mosely, Madison Barwise; Middles – Caitlin Du Plooy, Lily Attard.

It was positive to see two Yr 7s in our Redlands team. Madison and Lily have been amazing this year and should be a dominant force together in the coming seasons.

I would like to also take this time to thank two girls in particular for all that they have done this season. Our Touch Football program would not have come so far without the efforts of Sydney Stuckmann and our 2018/19 Touch Football Captain Caitlin Du Plooy. These girls have led this program, with their efforts on and off the field, from the moment they walked out onto the cramped fields of Manly all the way to when they ran out as 1st VI players against Barker in the ISA Finals. I cannot thank these girls enough for all that they have given this program and I know that their coach, Cameron Ellis, feels the same.

Congratulations to all award winners and also to all students who have made our program so successful for this year.

HICES Swimming Reps

Our HICES Rep swimmers performed brilliantly at NSWCIS yesterday. Personal bests were the order of the day, with nearly all of our swimmers recording their best ever swims. Luka Gordon and Isobel Campbell showed the future for Redlands Swimming is bright, both making Finals in their respective events, with a number of others only narrowly missing Finals berths.

Basketball

Yrs 3 and 4 basketballers finished the season on a high note with four fantastic matches in Dunnet Hall. In a series of games where defense was king, the low scoring affairs were really evenly matched. Redlands A and D teams recording strong wins. For keen basketballers, our Friday morning training sessions will continue throughout the year. Sadly, our Yr 5 and 6 teams matches were rained out after heavy overnight rain.

Paul Kelly Cup

Four Redlands teams took on schools from the local area in the first Paul Kelly Cup at the redeveloped Gore Hill Oval. The new surface got a big stamp of approval from the kids, who would almost certainly have been rained off on the old field. Both our boys and girls teams had a blast and improved with each match. Our Yr 6 boys and girls narrowly missed Semi Final play on for and against results going against them. Our boys in particular were unlucky, losing to the Grand Final team by just two points after leading early and missing some big opportunities through errant kicking.

Mia Kwintner – Tumbling

Mia Kwintner not only starred as an in and under rover for the Paul Kelly Cup team this week, but showed her talents elsewhere too by recently competing in the NSW Gymnastics State Trial competition and winning the U13s Tumbling division. This result means that she has qualified to be part of the NSW Gymnastics squad where she will compete in May against the country’s top gymnasts.

Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon

Don’t forget to book a ticket for Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon, an event not to be missed on the Redlands calendar! The Luncheon will provide a great opportunity to celebrate the integral value of sport to the Redlands community and its students of the past, present and future. Sports education enables students to develop skills and behaviours that are essential for their future journey. The list of guests features  a range of Redlands greatest athletes including Karyn Gojnich (Davis), Class of 1978 (Olympic Sailor, Redlander and Redlands mother), Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987 (Olympic Rower), Lachlan Mackay, Class of 2000 (Rugby Wallaby and Brumby) and Holly Crawford, Class of 2001 (Olympic Snowboarder).

HICES Football Trials

Yr 6 students Lachlan Arici, Charles Hargrave, Jasper Houchell, Rory Mantell, George Proctor and Hugo Ward ventured to The Hills Grammar School to take on HICES best footballers. Despite all our boys performing well and having a large presence in the Possibles vs Probables match, none of our boys were selected. It’s tough heading into trials without having had much of a kick or hitout, so the boys did exceptionally well and were fantastic representatives of our Football program, showing great technical skills and understanding and great perseverance.

Winter Sport

Winter sport selections begin on 27 March. Any students uncertain of their winter sports should contact the Sports Office as soon as possible.

School Holiday Camps

Netball and Football programs will be running school holiday camps during the first week of the upcoming school holidays – 15, 16 and 17 April.

Football camps will run on the Junior School Oval from 9.30am – 2.30pm
Netball camps will run in Dunnet Hall from 10.00am – 3.00pm

All camps will be run by Redlands Sports coaching staff and contain skills and drills components and modified games. Camps are $60/day or $160 for all three days.

A Dancer’s Brain Develops in a Unique Way

A recent study within the neuroscience field discusses how the practice of dance can help us feel more connected to each other in a technology filled world. It also finds that dancers displayed stronger synchronisation at the low theta frequency. Theta synchronisation is linked to emotion and memory processes which are central to all interpersonal interaction and self-understanding.
