Issue 7 2023 Term 1 Week 7 - 16 Mar 2023

Secondary Sport

It was a fantastic day of ISA Finals last weekend, with school spirit on show across both the Basketball and Touch Football venues. A huge thank you to all the supporters who spend the day travelling across Sydney to a number of venues to support the Boys and Girls Basketball and Touch Football teams. There was a photographer at the ISA Swimming Carnival as well as the ISA Basketball & Touch Football finals, details on how to access those photos are below.

This week we see the Head of the River for the Girls (Saturday) and Boys (Sunday) at the International Regatta Centre at Penrith. This is the official end of the Rowing season and it would be great to see the supporters out at both regattas cheering on the rowers!

It was announced this week that Mr Jack Gooding has taken a role as the Rugby Convenor and 1st XV Head coach at St Aloysious College. Jack has been an integral part of the Redlands Sport and School community since taking over the Rugby program in 2017. His passion, enthusiasm and commitment to help the students excel in their sports will be missed and we look forward to watching him thrive within the CAS Rugby program. Jack will finish up with Redlands on Friday 24 March.

Football

We have commenced the Football Season, it has been great to see our students back on the pitch in preparation for the 2023 ISA Football Season. A reminder there is no commitment for our Football students this Saturday 18 March due to the Autumn Fair.

The Redlands 1st Girls Football squad competed in Round 1 of the CIS Cup on Friday 10th March, drawing Pymble Ladies College, who have won the CIS Cup for a number of years in a row. The Redlands 1st Girls put up a fantastic fight but unfortunately Pymble were just too strong on the day.

Congratulations to Jasmine Black who suited up for the Sydney FC Women’s team on Saturday, such a fantastic experience for her to compete in her sport at the top level.

Hockey

We have now commenced the Hockey Season. It was fantastic to see our students in action on Tuesday morning fine tuning their skills ahead of the season. A huge thank you to the Friends of Hockey who supplied our students with breakfast after their first session.

A reminder that there will be no Hockey this Saturday 18 March due to the Autumn Fair.

Rowing

This is the final week of training for all of our rowing crews as we move into the weekends NSW Heads of the River regattas with the Girls racing on Sat 18 March and the Boys on Sun 19 March at Penrith.

All Rowing students are to attend boat unloading on Sunday afternoon at the boatsheds post the Boys Head of the River. While boat unloading is being completed, Friends of Rowing invite all parents to an informal end of season party upstairs above our boatshed where nibbles are provided. Adults are encouraged to BYO drinks. It is anticipated this will run from 2:45 – 4:30pm.

FOOT OF THE RIVER (Parent Rowing): Now that the season is drawing to a close, it is our families’ opportunity to have a turn at Rowing with the Foot of the River commencing in Week 2 of Term 2. This is our major fundraiser with the aim to purchase a new Eight oared boat for the 2023-2024 season. Parents can form a crew of four with their family, friends, work mates or anyone who they can find, learn how to row being coached by our rowing coaches twice a week for four weeks and conclude with a mini regatta held on Sun 28 May racing over a 500m course at Davidson Park.

Info can be found at the following link.

Kind Regards

Touch Football

Stunning conditions on Saturday set us up for a wonderful day at Macquarie Uni Fields for ISA Grand Finals.

Our Senior 1sts Girls, Senior 3rd Boys and Junior A Boys all competed with great pride in their school jerseys, all demonstrating great sportsmanship.

The Junior A Boys put up a brilliant fight against St Augustine’s, narrowly loosing with a 5-3 scoreline. A great fought battle for a young team with a bright future ahead. We look forward to seeing this group of boys work the system over the coming years.

The Senior 3rd Boys set the tone early in the day, filling the sidelines with vocal support. The Senior 3rd Boys running out an undefeated season with a 7-5 win over Oakhill. Congratulations boys on such a fantastic season of results.

The Senior 1sts Girls took to the field in the hottest time slot of the day, putting in a huge effort under tough conditions. The 1sts were supported by classmates and members of school staff, which proved to be the difference at the final hooter. A fantastic result for our 1sts, champions with a 9-5 win. Congratulations to our Champion girls, the first time ever Redlands has won the Division One title.

Thank you to our captains Bronte Backhouse and Sam Chubb, your leadership and enthusiasm has created a culture of excellence within Touch Football. We have seen an increase in love for the Sport with player development a direct reflection of this.

Thanks to all parents and students for your commitment to Touch Football this Summer, hope to see you all return next season!

From the Principal

This morning I spent time out at the Junior School Athletics Carnival at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre and it was wonderful to see the high levels of participation and strong sense of camaraderie on display from the students. Yesterday, I was also out at Sydney Olympic Park watching our Secondary School swimmers compete in the ISA Swimming Championships. There were a number of excellent individual and relay results. Overall, our girls finished 1st in Division 2 and our boys finished 9th in Division 1. Well done to all competitors for their efforts on the day.

On Saturday a number of our Secondary School Basketball and Touch Football teams competed in their respective ISA Grand Finals. There were many outstanding results on the day, including our Girls 1sts Touch Football team winning their first ISA Championship and, despite our 1sts Girls Basketball team losing a tough Grand Final, our Girls Basketball program winning the Overall Shield for the most successful ISA school. Even more pleasing than the results were the high levels of support and school spirit shown by the many students who came out to cheer on their peers across both venues.

Our current Head of Human Resources, Erin Hetherington, will be leaving us at the end of this week after over four years of dedicated service to Redlands. We are pleased to announce that Victoria Cook will be joining Redlands and the Executive team as our new Head of Human Resources. Victoria is a strategic, values-driven People and Culture leader with extensive Human Resources and Executive experience in both the public and private sectors, and we look forward to welcoming her to Redlands.

After a six month delay, we are excited to finally be able to hold our Spring, now Autumn, Fair this Saturday on the Senior Campus. Pleasingly, the weather forecast looks great, and we are confident it will be a wonderful community building day. I would like to thank all of the RPFA members, school staff and parent volunteers who have worked for months in preparation for this event. I look forward to seeing many of you out at the Fair on Saturday, and yes, the rumours our true – I will be having stint in the Dunk Tank!

Uniform Redevelopment Update

Our Uniform Redevelopment Committee, comprising parent, staff and Board representatives from across the School, as well as having regular student feedback and input, has been working with leading Australian designer Jonathan Ward on developing a uniform that reflects the contemporary culture of the School. As advised in our initial uniform redevelopment update within Note Day at the end of Term 4 last year, the new uniform will be introduced in Term 1 2024 and during a two year transition period, current students will have the option of wearing either the existing or new uniform.

At this week’s Uniform Redevelopment Committee meeting, initial samples were modelled by students from across the School, and final refinements were agreed. After these refinements are completed, we look forward to sharing the new uniform designs, in addition to further transition details, with parents and carers in Term 3.

Value, cost and sustainability along with easy-care properties have been a central focus of the Uniform Committee. These have been addressed through the development of a trans-seasonal uniform with gender neutral options; the use of newly developed fabrics that are lightweight, durable and comfortable; and a uniform implementation through a long transition period.

This exciting project sees the first holistic review of our uniform in over 25 years and will culminate in a new era of school attire that is comfortable, contemporary and provides students with personal choice, while also honouring the heritage of Redlands uniforms throughout our history.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Community Update

Thank you to our dedicated and passionate volunteers, led by our effervescent RPFA, for their enthusiasm and effort in bringing together this Saturday’s Autumn Fair. Our Autumn Fair is a day filled with fun, food and entertainment that showcases our community’s diversity and talent. Further details on the Autumn Fair, along with details on how you can still volunteer to assist, can be found in the RPFA section. I look forward to seeing you there!

Our Liggins Building, a precious part of Redlands’ heritage, is the only remaining element of our school grounds that links almost 100 years of Redlanders. Originally known as Liggins House, the building was opened on 9 May 1923 in honour of Redlands’ co-founder Elizabeth Liggins. Throughout its history, our community has generously supported some of its upgrades, including the 2007 Liggins Atrium Project enjoyed by students today. In preparation for the Liggins Building celebrating its centenary this year, we have embarked on a significant restoration to help preserve its historic façade and refurbish the interior to provide an exceptional learning environment for our students and staff. For more information on how you can support this treasured building please visit our Foundation section.

Redlands is a school in the Anglican tradition that seeks to provide students and our wider community with the opportunity to understand the Christian faith in a relevant and accessible way.  With that in mind, we are delighted to welcome our community for a time of Easter reflection, prayer and connection on Wednesday 5 April from 7.00 in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Church, Cremorne (with parking located on Waters Rd).

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kindest regards,

Mr Grant Birse

Our International Community

Redlands has a network of over 20,000 Alumni locally, interstate and globally. We continue to ensure the important connections with our community are nurtured and developed through the Redlands Alumni engagement program, which includes interstate and international reunions.

This term we met with our Alumni in Melbourne and are having Zoom session with Redlanders residing in North America next Friday.

Redlanders Gathering in London

An enormous thank you to Pauline Lyle-Smith (RL 1963) who opened up her London home for Redlanders residing in the UK and provided refreshments. It was an excellent opportunity to connect and reminisce about their time at Redlands and to share stories of their journeys since attending the School.

This group has set the ball rolling for more similar gatherings later this year and beyond and we are already receiving updates from others wanting to participate at regular events!

Liggins Restoration Appeal

A sincere thank you to all members of our community who generously supported the Liggins Restoration Appeal. The Liggins Building is the only remaining element of our school grounds linking almost 100 years of Redlanders.

A significant schedule of works has been undertaken during the holiday break which included the refresh and upgrade of classrooms, a home for languages.

The second stage is currently in place to further refurbish the top floor which will also be a communal area with an incredible Heritage wall acknowledging our 140 years old history. There is still an opportunity to make a donation towards the Family Plaque.

Yr 12 Student Leadership Afternoon Tea

This week our Yr 12 Student Leaders hosted an afternoon tea for students from other schools. They engaged in trivia, played celebrity head, chatted, ate lovely food and posed for photos together. They were a wonderful group and left the teachers present (Mr Walker, Ms Martin, Ms Jansons and me) feeling the future is in safe hands!

RULER your Emotions

In last week’s Note Day I wrote about the recent course via Yale School of Emotional Intelligence attended by members of the School Executive. We already knew that emotions matter but we learned some valuable methods to support our wellbeing and success at school. Emotions influence our personal and professional lives throughout each day, guiding our thoughts and our interactions with others.

The four main areas of our lives affected by emotion are:

  • Attention, memory, and learning
  • Decision making
  • Relationship quality
  • Mental and physical health

Emotions matter now more than ever. Emotions affect everything we do both in and out of school. In the past few years, most of us have experienced a range of strong emotions related to the pandemic, political divides, racial unrest, natural disasters, and more. All of these emotions that we’re experiencing come from real events that are happening in our world. These strong emotions are not necessarily good or bad. They can help us focus on what’s important, and they can either bring us closer to or further away from achieving our goals. What matters most is being aware of the impact of our emotions and choosing to respond to them in helpful ways. By no means do we have all the answers or cures for all of the complex challenges in our schools, our nation, or our world. However, we believe embracing our emotional lives is a great place to start.

Recognising Emotion

The first R of RULER is for recognising emotion.

Recognising emotion refers to identifying emotion by interpreting:

  • Our own thoughts and physiology (heart rate, body temperature, etc.)
  • Cues in ourselves and others, including:

o   Facial expressions

o   Vocal tones

o   Body language

o   Words and behaviour

Practising this skill builds our self-awareness. When we pay attention to our own thoughts and behaviour, we begin to know and understand ourselves better. Recognising emotions also enhances our social awareness. When we look for clues about how others are feeling in their faces, voices, bodies, and behaviour, we begin to know and understand them better. We can use this information to guide how we respond to them.

Next time something significant happens – anything really – explicitly recognise your emotion with the family and ask your teengager to recognise their emotion/s too. At school, we tend to use the feelings wheel to support students to recognise their emotion/s. The mood meter is also useful.

Musical

A few tickets are still available for this year’s Musical, the Addams Family on Thu-Sat next week at The Concourse, Chatswood.

Book Your Tickets Here

The Addams Family showcases the skills and talents of our Yrs 7-12 students and there are over 100 students involved on stage as performers, in the orchestra and in hair and make-up and production.

View Production Trailer Here

Redlands presents THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story and is every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Chaplain

Jesus famously said, ‘I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.’ John 10.10. In our Chapel experiences this term we have explored this ‘fullness of life’ through our exploration of concepts such as empathy, kindness, environmental care and compassion. On the Junior Campus, Year 5 students have energetically led their peers Chapel and on the Secondary Campus, senior students contribute to the Chapel music to build a sense of involvement and participation.

We look forward to the coming Easter Season at Redlands and welcome all parents to join for a special End of Term Prayer Gathering on Wednesday 5 April at 7pm in the David Armstrong Room, St Peter’s Cremorne. Our staff are invited to a Service of Prayer and Reflection on 6 April at 7.45am at St Peters Cremorne.

International Women’s Day Recap

Last Friday, Yr 11 students dedicated the cohort assembly to International Women’s Day. A group of students and a Yr 11 Tutor shared their views on gender equality, feminism, stories of female role models in their lives and what we can do as a cohort to support equality for all. The theme of all messages revolved around everyone needing to take small and consistent actions to make the biggest impact. Everyone was asked to recognise and thank the females in their lives, to speak equally and in a supportive manner to peers and to call out inappropriate comments. The impact of peers speaking directly to their peers is stronger than any guest speaker. Redlands Hall was silent as students spoke from their hearts.

Thank you to the students who jumped in to this opportunity and for continuing the discussion on embracing equality: Grace Durrant, Daisy Thomas, Max Stepniak, Hugo Scott, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Apoorv Pilani, Kane Thompson, Hallie Hunt, Scarlett Thorp, Ashley Stapleton and Celine Patel. Thank you to Ms Rosanna Peterson, Yr 11 CY Tutor, for also sharing her role models, her observations as a teacher and her advice for supporting one another.

History Excursion

Last Friday, our Yr 11 Ancient History cohort visited the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney. Under the guidance of Dr Thanos and other museum staff, our students were offered the wonderful opportunity to learn about the ancient world in the context of material culture and working through and handling ancient material. Unique and enriching, the experience was greatly appreciated by our students who are now setting their sights towards the HSC. The students in attendance displayed exemplary behaviour and a stellar performance during the visit to the museum. Dr Thanos acknowledged and commended students for their erudite approach to the questions they raised and the analytical approaches they engaged in throughout the visit.

HSC and Careers Expo

On Thursday 1 June there will be a half day optional excursion to the HSC and Careers Expo. The exhibitors attending are included here.

What is the HSC and Careers Expo?

The Expo provides resources and information for tertiary courses, career and employment options, the HSC, study strategies, gap years and more. It is an opportunity for you to speak directly to:

  • universities, TAFE colleges and training providers
  • organisations with apprenticeship information and opportunities
  • organisations with employment opportunities
  • organisations with cadetship opportunities
  • providers of international exchange and GAP year programs

You can ask questions that will help inform your choices about your path after school.

Applications to attend this event will be reviewed and students will be notified by the end of Term 1. Students have been sent further information for applying to attend this event. All applications must be submitted by Friday 24 March.

Year 9

This Week in Yr 9

Week 7 has been particularly busy for Yr 9 with Assessment Task preparation and NAPLAN. At our Year Assembly today I spoke about setting a weekly Social and Emotional Goal under the heading of ‘Be a Good Human’. I spoke about why constantly wearing ‘Air Pods’ is not being connected to our environment, and how it is limiting Yr 9’s potential. Their task is to think about how they can communicate and connect with their peers without relying on technology. If your young person brings this up in conversation, it would be wonderful to listen to their perspective and talk about why this might be an important and supportive tool for them.

Thank You!

Thank you to the following Yr 9 students who have led prospective Yr 7 2025 students and parents on campus tours this week. They have represented the school with wonderful positivity and pride.

Week 7 – NAPLANning for Success

This week Yr 7 moved through the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. Did you know that was what NAPLAN stood for? Well, our Yr 7s discovered NAPLAN firsthand this week, coming face to face with the writing, reading and language conventions papers. On Friday, they will sit the numeracy paper.

With NAPLAN now all online, the cohort have braved general examination nerves to complete their tests with great poise and grace. I have been so impressed with their respectful engagement in the process, particular those students who finished early in some sessions and waited silently and patiently while the rest of the cohort completed their work.

NAPLAN offers us a useful indication of students’ basic skills, but it is certainly not the sole indicator of student academic potential or ability. Students should also be taking good account of any feedback they receive from their assessment program this term and next, so they can continue to develop their thinking, knowledge and other competencies across Semester 1.

This week, our focus in Tutor time has been based around respect. We started the week with a Year Assembly on Monday in which we discussed what respect means, how to convey respect and why fostering a respectful environment is important. Students were particularly spoken to about the importance of:

  • using manners and being polite, gracious and kind to others
  • respecting people for who they are, even if they are different from you
  • caring enough to consider how their words and actions might impact others
  • looking after shared resources and spaces
  • listening to others and giving them a chance to express their views, even if you disagree with them
  • admitting to their mistakes and learning from them
  • showing empathy and compassion in their interactions.

Many of these messages were then reiterated by Mrs Jansons (Dean of Students) during the Years 7-9 assembly on Tuesday. In Tutor time on Thursday, students then discussed respect further, unpacking how they can model respectful behaviour in their interactions with others and creating ‘Rules of Respect’ for their Tutor group sessions. The hope is that with explicit discussion of respect and appropriate modelling and guidance, we will be able to continue to foster a really welcoming, supportive and accepting climate in the cohort.

Tutors have also been reminding students about how to use their student planners effectively. These are an excellent resource for helping students to keep track of home learning and to plan ahead for completing future assessment tasks. Parents have a specific space to sign planners each week, so that they can be checked in Tutor on Thursdays. Please help us to keep students accountable by signing planners weekly.

It is also worth reminding everyone that that a schedule of all assessment tasks for each subject and assessment notifications can be found on the Yr 7 Core Page on iLearn by visiting here.

NSW School Vaccination Program 2023

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The following vaccines are offered free to Yr 7 students at school on Wednesday 5 April.

  • Yr 7 – diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV)

Students who miss this clinic date will be offered a catch-up opportunity on Thursday 25 May.

From February 2023, children in Yr 7 will now only need one dose of HPV vaccination. This change has been endorsed by ATAGI based on evidence showing that one dose provides the same level of protection against HPV as two doses.

Vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received.  To provide consent for vaccination online go to this website, you will need:

Benefits of online consent for parents/carers:

  • SMS notifications when vaccinations are given
  • easy updating of your child’s details online
  • faster upload of your child’s vaccination records to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper-based consent form directly from the Year Advisor.

To help answer questions you may have regarding providing vaccination and online consent, please visit the NSW Health website.

Autumn Fair

After months of preparation, our Redlands Autumn Fair takes place this Saturday 18 March and it promises to be a fun-filled day of community spirit and entertainment.

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank and congratulate the Redlands Parents and Friends Association and their army of volunteer helpers, coupled with many of our Redlands staff, who have brought this major event to fruition. You can imagine the organisation involved at every level and it needs the community’s engagement and involvement to make this happen.

The fair is open to both the school and local community so do bring your family and friends and entry is free. As has been communicated, this is also a cash-free event so you will need to purchase wristbands (for unlimited rides only) or coupons to enjoy individual rides, games and food. Pre-purchase wristbands and coupons can be purchased here with pre-sales closing at 12pm this Friday 17 March. These orders can be collected from the Gerard Street Gate Coupon Counter.

Please also be reminded that dogs are not permitted on campus.

I look forward to seeing many of our families at the fair on Saturday.

We are really looking forward to our first Junior School camp of 2023 taking place next week as our Yr 5 group head to the Southern Highlands. Yr 5 families have received a second detailed letter this week outlining all of the key information and I am looking forward to joining the group during their time away. My thanks to the Yr 5 team, guided by Mr Brakell, for all of their preparatory administrative and pastoral work in the meticulous planning that has taken place and I look forward to also reporting back on the camp in next week’s Note Day.

Harmony Week

As part of Harmony Week, which is a celebration that recognises our diversity and brings Australians together from all different backgrounds, students across our campus will be involved in some activities next week highlighting inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

On Monday, students are encouraged to wear a touch of orange and will enjoy a special music performance from Taikoz during the day. On Thursday, the canteen will also have a special for interested students of paella (chicken and vegetable) and churros which is on offer for all students and at no extra cost.

Yr 5 Leadership Day

Last Friday, our Year 5 cohort began their journey towards student leadership in Yr 6 with the first in a series of leadership-related activities they will be part of throughout the year. Led by an external facilitator, Cameron Brown, from Explore Discover Act, our students were inspired to explore the difference they could make for and with others, having great fun along the way. It was great to see the students collaborate in the challenges they were presented with and also share their own leadership values.

International Day: Tuesday 4 April

On Tuesday 4 April (Week 10), our school community will celebrate our global-mindedness and diversity through our annual International Day event. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up in either international dress or colours for the day and teachers will have a series of themed lessons during the day.

Week 8 Harmony Week

Our society is a huge melting pot of colour, flavour, and diversity. Harmony Day, which is observed each year on 21 March, celebrates this diversity, aiming to foster inclusiveness, respect, and the idea that people of all different cultures can make a valuable contribution to society.

At Redlands we will be celebrating the wonders of diversity and inclusivity all week. Prep students will be treated to a performance by the Taikoz drummers on Monday, enjoy a French breakfast on Tuesday and participate in many activities throughout the week in their classes.

Orange is the worldwide colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Redlands students are encouraged to wear ‘a touch of orange’ on Monday and on Tuesday, a touch of blue, red and/or white can be worn to celebrate our French breakfast.

Keep an eye on our Prep Reception display board next week as we celebrate Harmony Week in the Prep School.

Week 8 Parent and Teacher Learning Conversations

A reminder for Prep parents to book in your times for Week 8 learning conversations with class teachers by the end of the week. Learning conversations provide a snapshot of your child’s learning to date, but most importantly, the where to next in their learning journey. Teachers will also spend time unpacking the social and emotional development of your child, this is where some shared strategies can be discussed to develop a common language and approach between school and home.

We do hope that you find the sessions helpful.

If you would like to discuss your child’s development in Music, PE, French or Christian Studies, please email the relevant specialist directly to book a time. These areas of learning are just as important as the learning that happens with classroom teachers, so I do encourage you to have these conversations.

Prep Ninja Skipping Challenge

A message from Ms Longworth.

For the remainder of this term, we have invited the Prep School students to participate in the Prep ninja skipping challenge.

All students start at the white belt and when they can complete the number of skips in a row, they can progress to the next belt.  As they work their way up the belts, students can write their name on the ninja boards in the Prep playground.  House points and prizes will be handed out at the end of the challenge.

This challenge is designed to promote active fun!

Students will improve their skipping skills, improve their health, work on perseverance, and we want them to just have fun with their friends!

Skipping ropes can be used before school, at recess and lunchtime. They are available near Friendship Club.

Drop off Information

It is wonderful to have parents and carers in our playground each morning. A precious time to connect and catch up. Parents are reminded to please exit the campus when the bell goes to help the transitioning of our students into their day. A final wave or a quick peek through the windows is tempting, but this can disrupt the morning routine.

A gentle reminder that if families do arrive after the bell, please say goodbye to your child or leave the property you are dropping off in the Reception area. Mrs Hunt or Mrs Alfonso will walk your child to their room or take the property to rooms. This again will reduce disruption and allow for smooth transitioning throughout the day.

Sport Calendar

We have a Sport Calendar for each Term. To view the 2023 Term 2 Sports Calendar please click here

This calendar is regularly updated and provides all the key dates for you for school sport, carnivals and major events.

Athletics Carnival

Well done to all students who participated in our carnival today in warmer than usual conditions. With a modified format and additional measures in place, we were able to hold our second major carnival at SOPAC at Homebush. Credit to all students for their enthusiasm and participation both in the stands with war cries and cheering and on the track.

There was some great House spirit being demonstrated throughout the day.

With the entrant number system student used in conjunction with the timing gates and photo finish, students were able to see their times and overall rankings on the digital score board after they finished their race which is excellent feedback. Thanks to those Year 6 students who assisted here.

New Record

Congratulations to our new record holder, who will receive a certificate of commendation at our Sports Prizegiving Day next term:

  • Jake O’Sullivan – Under 12 Boys 200m

A big thank you the way all students looked on the day. Everyone got to wear the House race bibs this year when participating in track events. The ability to identify their peers representing their house from the grandstand really added to the carnival atmosphere.

With Cowper winning the carnival for five years in a row and Roseby breaking that streak last year, there was a huge reaction when Dumolo were announced winner for the 2023 Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to Dumolo House on their win for 2023, led by Daisy Nassar and Harrison Bird who captained the winning House on the day.

Mr Sharma will be in touch with those students who have qualified for the Redlands Athletics Team who will compete at HCIES late next term. For those students who had intended to run in the 800m and 1500m on the day, which were cancelled due to heat, the plan is such that students who finish top 2 in their age group in our school Cross Country Carnival will be eligible for 1500m selection to run at the HCIES Athletics Carnival as long as they are close to the HICES guide time. Students who would like to be eligible to compete in the 800m will be asked to submit their 800m times from their little Athletics Associations. Of course, there may be students who are eligible for qualification and consideration who may not wish to run the 800m and or 1500m at HICES Athletics and this is fine

Welcome

Welcome to another incredible action-packed Snowsports season, and a special welcome to those who are joining our vibrant community on the slopes for the first time!

Redlands has been involved in competitive Snowsports for many years and has won numerous awards at the national level for individual events and as a school. We are committed to preparing our students to ride and ski safely and competently to enjoy this wonderful lifelong family sport.

To race, students need to confidently ski or snowboard on blue runs. The on-snow program commences with the start of the July school holiday, and if your child is keen to compete, they can enter the Redlands Cup, followed by the Sydney Interschools Championships. There are a wide variety of Ski and Snowboard events, with Redlands offering specialist training (Kindergarten-12) for participants through our partnership with Thredbo.

We are always on the lookout for parent volunteers to assist with various aspects of the on-snow events, particularly at Redlands Cup and Interschools. If you are interested in supporting the Friends of Snowsports, get in touch with Chairperson Nicky Wessels (details on the Redlands Pulse Community Page) or register interest through Snowsports registrations when they open.

When they become available, Redlands can offer Thredbo Premium Season Passes for students at an exclusive rate (2023 cost TBC), as well as group lessons when students are on our programs.

Students attending Winter School will have the Season Pass included in their fees and do not need to purchase one through the Snowsports Registrations. All other students participating in Redlands Snowsport programs are encouraged to purchase the Season Pass through us to take advantage of exclusive price.

Further details on registrations for all events will be available via Redlands Pulse in the coming weeks, but for now here is an overview of the key dates along with a few more details.

Drama and Theatre

  The Addams Family – Musical

Only one week to go until our opening night! The Dress Run was excellent. We are so proud of the contribution and dedication everyone has shown as we move to the end of the process.

Important Dates

  • Week 8: Production Week at The Concourse: Wednesday 22 March – Saturday 25 March

Production Week

  • Production Week information letters are available on iLearn and Pulse/Engage.
  • Please ensure permissions are granted for the production week.
  • The detailed production schedule will be published on ilearn. This will provide a detailed breakdown of the schedule in the theatre.
  • Reminder to not be late in the morning when catching the Redlands buses. It is crucial that we get to the theatre on time.

Show Week Transport

As with other major events, such as the Swimming Carnival, we request that students travel on the bus from Redlands to the Concourse to ensure adequate supervision by Redlands staff. The Concourse staff are not able to supervise students arriving at various times without a Redlands teacher present. On the rehearsal and show nights, Wednesday 22 March – Saturday 25 March there will no buses returning to school. Students must be collected each night from STAGE DOOR (located on Anderson Street) by their parents. Those who are carpooling are requested to email permission for their child to travel with a friend’s parent to drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au by Sunday 19 March. Students may not leave unaccompanied or drive themselves to or from the theatre.

Show Week Clothing

Students are permitted to wear a Musical T-shirt and full blacks OR Full School Uniform on Wednesday 22 March & Thursday 23 March (ALL STUDENTS -Technical & Dress Rehearsals at the Concourse). ALL Students are to move straight to the bus in Full School Uniform on Friday afternoon at 3.20pm promptly.

Important Costume Note

Your costume bag is your responsibility. Please familiarise yourself with each item the first time you take your bag(s).

  • Please ensure you are wearing appropriate footwear and underwear.
  • Keep your costume pieces together and always make sure everything is accounted for and placed in bags before you leave each day.
  • DO NOT EAT while you are in your costume. Either remove your costume or cover it up with your light dressing gown.
  • Costumes should also be covered with your dressing gown whilst you are in ‘Makeup’
  • If something does happen to your costume, tell the costume team immediately. Things happen – zips break, hems fall, buttons come off but tell the costume team as soon as possible, so it can be repaired.

Catering in Production Week

This year, students will not be catered for during Production Week. This is to reduce the amount of cross-contamination and appropriate handling of food between all students and staff. This means the appropriate amount of food must be packed during Production Week to last students for the entire day and night.

Rehearsal Reminders

  • Be prompt to all rehearsals.
  • Bring water and food to all rehearsals
  • Please be aware that Redlands has a “Nut-free” policy.
  • Bring scripts, librettos & pencils to all rehearsals.

Theatresports Performance Evening

Theatresports challenges performers to create instant theatre through set games based entirely on improvisation. The result is a spontaneous, team-based performance which promotes a highly supportive environment, that’s also a lot of fun!  The energetic and unpredictable style of Theatresports is judged on three different criteria:  Technique, Narrative, and Entertainment and all of this performed to a time limit.

It’s going to be a high energy, highly entertaining night of wacky characters in sticky situations. We’d also like to welcome the Year 7 students who will be joining our competition for the first time. We hope you can join us for the Theatresports Competition Performance evening.
