Issue 7 2021 - 11 Mar 2021

From the Principal

We were powerfully reminded of our reliance on water this week, with the Secondary School impacted by a Sydney Water outage. The historical reasons behind the location of fortified compounds around reliable water supply was cause for comment and looking to our future, a reminder of the importance of environmental sustainability.

The notion of servant leadership and taking personal responsibility and action is inherent in our Service Learning programs and it was most encouraging to note the large number of students, parents and staff who took part in our Redlands Clean Up Australia Day event at Balmoral last Sunday. A number of students commented on how much rubbish they were still able to locate in an area that is generally well maintained. Thank you to all involved and to our staff who provided this opportunity for the community to come together in positive action.

It is most rewarding to see students lead initiatives across the whole School. The student led and run Junior School assembly was very impressive and I was pleased to note the new SRC initiative of providing opportunities for students to provide feedback and recognise their peers. They have established an SRC suggestion box and also an SRC noticing kindness box. I look forward to hearing the feedback that comes through these channels during the year.

In the Secondary School, senior students initiated and led the production of a video to celebrate International Women’s Day, which incorporated snippets of video footage from students and staff about the importance of the day. To witness the strength of conviction and heartfelt comments from such a broad cross-section of the Secondary School was moving and inspiring.

The development of entrepreneurial and innovative thinking skills will be an important focus of our next strategic plan and it is pleasing to note these skills already being developed in certain areas of our curriculum. The Yr 9 Commerce Market Days were held earlier this week with the students selling their products to the community on the Fahl Garden at lunchtimes. There was fierce competition between products and strategic marketing and enticement. Price point was important and there were certainly some bargains available.

Congratulations to students who represented the School in the recent ISA and HICES Swimming Carnivals and particular mention to our Girls ISA team who won the Senior Girls Swimming Shield, the Intermediate Girls Swimming Shield and the Overall Girls Swimming Shield. We are looking forward to the final round of Summer Sport this weekend and wish our Rowing crews every success at the Head of the River Regatta, as well as our 11 Basketball teams and 4 Touch Football teams competing in ISA Finals and 8 Tennis teams contesting NSTA Finals.

Congratulations also to our Director of Basketball Coaching, Renae Camino and 1st Girls Basketball Coach Kate Seebohm, who have been selected to coach one of the two NSW State U20 Girls teams at the National Championships.

Finally, I sincerely congratulate former Board Director Colleen Godsell who this week was announced as the 2021 North Shore Woman of the Year in NSW Parliament for her decades of service to Scouting Australia in the North Shore community. Colleen made a significant contribution to our Redlands community from 1989-2020 as a parent, friend, RPFA member and Board Director.

COVID-19 Update from the Deputy Principal

As many of you would already be aware from reports in the media and communication this week from the Junior Campus, on Monday 8 March some of the COVID-19 restrictions in regard to parent and carer attendance at school events have been eased. Accordingly, we are now able to welcome more parents and carers back on campus in a COVID safe manner. Specifically:

  • Parents and carers may drop off and pick up students in accordance with campus and section specific arrangements
  • RPFA meetings and other meeting or gatherings of parents and carers for events on campus may proceed
  • Parents and carers are able to attend sporting events, performances and other school activities on campus, provided the requirements of the specific COVID-19 safety plans are being followed.

Please note that there are still restrictions put on the School in terms of welcoming parents back to campus, such as:

  • Parents and carers arriving on campus to attend a meeting, event or activity must still complete the campus specific sign in requirements, as well as scan the Service NSW COVID-19 QR Code
  • There are limitations on the number of parents allowed to attend a meeting, event or activity based on the recommended 1.5 metre social distancing between adults and the total number of adults allowed in a venue as per the 1 person per 2 square metre ratio. The total number of parents and carers allowed at event will be determined by these restrictions.

Once again, we appreciate the challenges that parents and carers have faced over the past year when they have not been allowed on campus due to COVID-19 restrictions and the patience you have shown. We look forward to welcoming more parents back on campus and bringing our whole community together more often for future events.

A Parent’s Memory of Belinda Oxley

“Belinda taught my son (Lachlan) in 2013 when he was in Yr 2, the same year that she was awarded the Roseby Staff Award. Although I felt close to Belinda, it was through the lens of a very grateful parent. My son was really the one who developed a close relationship with Belinda and continues to speak very highly of her.

Belinda had an incredible passion for teaching and it was clear teaching was not just a job to her. Without a doubt, the greatest gift Belinda gave Lachlan, (and I believe all her students), was an understanding, appreciation and ability to create art. In fact, as I write this email I am surrounded by beautiful artwork on my office walls that Lachlan created with Belinda. One of our most treasured pieces is a self-portrait that he drew with Belinda’s assistance. Belinda had this amazing capacity for patience and compassion and a desire to create a nurturing environment for all her young students.

I’ll never forget the kindness Belinda showed Lachlan when he was not keen to attend camp. She took him under her wing and to this day he still says she made the best hot chocolate. He ended up loving that camp and eight years later is still able to recall specific highlights that involve Belinda. Belinda created a welcoming learning environment and I enjoyed many morning chats with her when I dropped Lachlan to school. One morning we saw a bird building a nest in a tree outside the classroom. Over the coming weeks, we spotted small eggs and then loved witnessing the arrival and growth of newborn chicks, a process which involved clambering on top of some small cupboards together to look into the nest. Watching the baby birds provided us with the perfect metaphor for Belinda’s students learning to fly. Both the chicks and her students received the nurturing they needed to grow up in readiness to fly the nest.

By the time Belinda’s students finished their second grade, they were more than ready to leave Prep School and soar into Junior School. When my husband and I attended Belinda’s funeral in 2018 and heard the way her family, friends, colleagues and past students honoured and remembered her so fondly, it was clear that our family had been privileged to know such a special lady.”

Alumni Chapter Meeting

On Friday evening, Redlands hosted our first inaugural SE Qld / N.NSW Chapter Meeting, inviting Alumni from this region to meet, connect and tell their stories of their time at school. Challenges Are What Make Life Interesting… Overcoming Them Makes Life Meaningful

Week 7 has certainly posed some challenges, which we have embraced and overcome as a community. The most recent was our temporary water outage yesterday, which precipitated the need to dismiss the students early. The students did a brilliant job of responding to this challenge. They managed the limitations posed by the water outage very well, and when it came time to communicate with parents and Tutors, they did so quickly and calmly. It was astounding to see how speedily they exited the Campus (from their designated areas!) and to work with a group of 900 young people who are so cooperative and good-humoured. We were, of course, glad to welcome the students back this morning – challenge overcome.

International Women’s Day (IWD) this year invited us to #choosetochallenge which sparked some reflective thinking and calls to action from both students and staff. The IWD student-led assembly on Tuesday focused on how we can #choosetochallenge stale and outdated perceptions of women, which ultimately prevent equality from being achieved. Students from across the School explored their experiences of womanhood and many were able to articulately pose a challenge to the Redlands community to think, empathise and act, for the betterment of women and all genders. It was wonderful to see the faces of so many students and staff, and hear their voices on why celebrating International Women’s Day is essential to the ongoing dialogue around gender parity. Our Yr 12 students, Anna-Luisa Feller and Julia Parker, were the drivers of this assembly. They worked with our AV team to set up a mini-recording studio in the Secondary School Office, and over the period of a week, students and teachers stopped by to share their experiences and offer insights into how at Redlands we can #choosetochallenge. I invite you to take the time to watch this IWD Assembly, and share in the energy and wisdom of our community – together we can overcome the challenges which prevent gender parity and fully celebrate women’s rights as human rights.

The challenges posed by our 2021 Market Day really only centred around what delicious food items to buy! Yr 9 remarkably turned the Fahl Garden into a bustling market square, where nachos, ice-cream, sausage sizzles, fairly floss, biscuits, and other sugary treats abounded. The queues for each stall stretched back deep into the Garden. Staff and students walked around juggling biscuits upon slices upon sausage sandwiches – eyes bigger than stomachs – there was too much for one person to eat. Teachers from the HSIE and History faculty inspected each market stall, making detailed notes on the product, the packaging, health and safety among other areas. Some students clearly considered the impact of their carbon footprint, using sustainable packaging to effectively market their goods. Whilst I am sure that pulling this day together was challenging for our Yr 9 students, the growth emerging from this challenge was evident in their execution of this successful event. Thanks must also go to the teachers who led them to this point and the parents who undoubtedly supported them.

Sticking with the theme of challenge, it has been wonderful to see many students taking advantage of the Study Centre available to all students in the Learning Hub before and after school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Being able to meet with a teacher to revise areas of learning from a lesson or to unpack an assessment experience is a valuable way to consolidate and extend knowledge. On Monday, I met Filip Feller from my Yr 8 English class to support his crafting of conceptual paragraphs for his upcoming assessment task. In the Learning Hub Study Centre on Level 2 we talked through the ‘big ideas’ of his text and explored suitable quotes for him to hang his ideas from in the essay. As a teacher, it was a wonderful way to provide more specific support to one of my students, and for him, as a student, to receive some one-to-one support, building confidence and skills. I encourage all students, and specifically those in Yrs 11 and 12, to use the Study Centre, in order to meet with teachers and receive personal feedback.

Finally, the restrictions placed upon us by COVID-19 have been challenging as they have limited our capacity to gather together as a large community.  Although we have successfully found ways to adapt and innovate, we are thankful that in recent days, some of these restrictions have eased. Once again, we look forward to singing, gathering and welcoming our parents and alumni back onto the Senior Campus – we’ve got a really great new building to show off! In the coming weeks, we look forward to welcoming our Yr 7 parents onto the campus (more on this in the coming days) and being able to hold larger events, in a COVID-safe way, to celebrate and enjoy the Redlands community.

Sailing

In early March, the Redlands Pacer team competed at the ACT Teams Racing Championship in Canberra. The team of seven sailors had a great weekend and were tied with the top six teams on three wins. After a tie-break using the average score for each team, the Redlands sailors finished 5th overall, a great result. The team was skippered by Yr 12 students Jameson Prescott and Gianni Watson.

Clean Up Australia Day

We had a wonderful turn out for Clean Up Australia Day at Balmoral last Sunday. Grateful thanks to Mr Jon Gray and Ms Rachael Riley for organising the event and to our Service and Environment Captains for all of their hard work ensuring the day was a success. Over 7000 students applied from 150 countries, with approximately 30% being offered places and just 36 students from Australia, so this is a wonderful achievement for Jessica! She will participate in the program in July at the Yale University campus.

Pastoral Program

This week students celebrated International Woman’s Day and watched a video where students and teachers discussed topics such as what does feminism mean and who are the important women in their lives. A big thank you to Iris Buisman who helped coordinate and interview many of the participants in this video. It was fantastic to see so many boys and girls talk from all Year Groups.

Over the next 4-5 weeks, Yr 11, Class of 2022, will be creating a Legacy Vlog. The Vlog will be a legacy to future Yr 11 students entering their final two years of studies to assist them with overcoming the barriers of Yr 11 and 12 through student personal reflections and words of wisdom.

Congratulations to Sienna Wessels who was selected for the GotIT Girls in STEM program coming up towards the end of the year. Sienna’s application was a stand-out amongst thousands of other girls who applied for the program. The GoIT Girls program is a week-long work experience program aimed at female students in Yrs 10 and 11. The aims of the program are to empower Australian students with the skills they need to be ready for the workplace of the future. Sienna will have the opportunity to meet senior executives from different companies who provide insight into the various STEM roles that exist across the business spectrum, with the hope of inspiring a new generation of innovators, problem solvers and technology professionals. The aim is to provide insight into and challenge stereotypes of the technology industry and challenge gender occupational stereotypes. Well done Sienna!

Clean Up Australia Day

Well done to all the Yr 10 students who gave up their Sunday afternoon to participate in the Redlands Clean Up Australia Day event at Balmoral Beach. Many bags of rubbish full of plastic and microplastics were collected by our Yr 10 students and the rest of the School.

Clean Up Australia Day draws attention to issues such as plastic pollution which unfortunately ends up in our beautiful beaches, ultimately affecting our diverse sea life. According to WWF Australia, on average, Australians use 130kg of plastic per person each year. Only 9% of that is recycled. More frightening still, up to 130,000 tonnes of plastic will find its way into our waterways and into the ocean. Once in the ocean, it endangers our marine wildlife.

International Women’s Day

This week, the focus of our Pastoral session was on International Women’s Day. The International Women’s Day theme for 2021 was ‘Choose to Challenge’. A challenging world is an alert world. And from challenge comes change.

International Women’s Day aims that:

  • identifying, celebrating and increasing visibility of women’s achievements can help forge equality
  • strategic collaborations based on a foundation of shared purpose, trust and appreciation can impact positive change for women
  • worldwide awareness-raising via meaningful narratives, resources and activity can help combat gender bias and discrimination to accelerate gender parity

The Term 1 IGNITE team met for the first time during Tutor Time on Monday and had the opportunity to reflect on inspirational women in their life. Below are their responses:

Corey Twining – The most inspirational role model in my life is Australian cricketer and footballer, Ellyse Perry who has inspired me because of her belief that anyone can participate in sport regardless of their ability.

Sabrina Blascoe  – The most inspirational role model in my life is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – a Nigerian author, Proud Feminist who writes about the role of gender in society – “Gender, as it functions today, is a grave injustice”. Chimamanda also speaks about the impact of race on feminism, intersectionality.

Spencer Farrell – The most inspirational role model in my life is my mum because she raised me to be the best version of myself.

Elena Parker – The most inspirational role model in my life is my sister, Julia Parker, because she is passionate and determined to make a positive difference in the world.

Mark Danse – The most inspirational role model in my life is activist Malala, due to her capabilities to fight against the opposition peacefully, but still being able to express her emotions and opinions with power and resilience.

Phoebe Vandekreeke – The most inspirational role model in my life is American politician and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams – who after losing a gubernatorial election, started the organisation ‘Fair Fight’ to fight voter suppression and boost voter turnout in the state of Georgia, particularly for black women. Her behind-the-scenes effort ultimately won the presidential election.

Sam Chubb – The most inspirational role model in my life is indigenous Australia runner, Cathy Freeman who sent the clear message to the rest of the world that her personal identity as an indigenous Australian woman didn’t define or stop her from becoming Olympic champion at the Sydney 2000 Olympics; it was her athleticism and determination which lead to her success.

Helena Drakakis – The most inspirational role model in my life is social media influencer, Chanel Contos, who advocates for women’s rights and raises awareness about sexual harassment/assault and the lack of discussion within the education system about sexual consent.

Finn Woodward – The most inspirational role model in my life is my sister. I strongly believe that without her, I would be a very different person today. She fights for what she believes in and when times of adversity do occur, her opinions and beliefs remain strong and authentic, a quality that I greatly admire.

Oliver Talbot – The most inspirational role model in my life is my mum because of the endless levels of support that come from her no matter what I do.

Jessica Marshall – The most inspirational role model in my life is my best friend because of the amount of strength and persistence she has against those who don’t necessarily agree with her ideas, the way she dresses, who she loves and how she loves. She has always been there for anyone who needs it and puts others before her, even when she needs her love, support and attention the most.

Oliver Kesby – The most inspirational role model in my life is my mum because she stands up for what she believes in and supports me and the family as well.

Cross Country Training

Congratulations to all students for an impressive and efficiently run Market Day.  Yr 9 were eagerly preparing their stalls prior to lunch and managing demand extremely well under the pressure of hungry and excited students and staff.  Students had beautifully decorated stalls and informative advertising. It was a treat to watch them run their stalls in Fahl Garden and several stalls ran out prior to the end of lunch. Well done to all Yr 9 students for this tremendous event.

Academic Support

As it is a busy time of term. A reminder that academic support materials can be accessed through the Study Skills Handbook. Modules designed to support students leading up to and after examinations are included with study techniques and managing workload and academic stress.

International Women’s 2021 Campaign: #ChooseToChallenge

A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge. In celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) our Student Leaders, Anna-Louise Feller and Julia Parker, collated a video showcasing the voices of Redlands on the topic of women. Students and staff explore topics including feminism, female role models and the 2021 IWD theme #ChooseToChallenge.

Redlands Cross Country Carnival

The Cross Country Carnival will be held on Wednesday 17 March (Term 1, Week 8) from 10.30am-3.20pm. Students will attend their Period 1 and 2 classes as normal.

Cross Country training also continues this week at Primrose Park from 6.30-7.30am – students should be dropped at Primrose Park and will then walk back to school.

Balmoral Swim

Redlands will be competing in the Balmoral Swim for Cancer Schools Relay Challenge taking place on Sunday 21 March at Balmoral Beach. How it works:

  • Each swimmer swims a leg of the relay 200m

JUNIOR SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

Junior School Learning Review Meetings

Next week sees our on-campus Junior School Learning Review Meetings with parents and teachers meeting face-to-face in classrooms to review your child’s learning and progress so far this year. Please be reminded to scan the QR code upon arrival and sanitise your hands. Of course, should you be unwell or have any COVID symptoms, please rearrange your appointment time directly with the class teacher.

Student Representative Council Update

In our assembly this week, our School Captains, Caroline Brown and Alex Heller, spoke on behalf of our Junior School Student Representative Council (SRC), sharing two student-led initiatives for our students to embrace. With a girl and a boy from each class peer-elected to represent each of our 18 classes, this group of 36 students meets each fortnight to share their respective classes’ views and look at ways to have their collective student voice heard. These sessions are chaired by Caroline and Alex with Mrs Clarkson there to guide, as needed. Thereafter, Caroline and Alex meet with me to update me on the meeting’s ideas.

The students have introduced two new suggestion boxes which have been ordered: one where students can recognise each other in a ‘Noticing Kindness’ box and the other box will allow for them to suggest ‘Ways in which we can improve our School’. Student voice and empowerment are important aspects of our School and I look forward to sharing some of the students’ ideas in future editions.

April Vacation Care

If you would like your child to attend the April Vacation Care program, please visit the OOSH page on Redlands Pulse in order to preview all information pertaining to the holiday activity schedule and daily requirements.

The Flexischools website will be open for bookings on Friday 12 March from 12.00pm. Please use the Prep and Junior Vacation Care icon for children in K-6. If you have any Vacation or After School Care queries, please contact our OOSH Coordinator, Trinetta Newbond.

International Day: Tuesday 30 March

Redlands will once again celebrate International Day on Tuesday 30 March in the final week of term. This will be a time for our community of 51 different nationalities to join together to celebrate both our rich, cultural diversity and international awareness. The event aligns with similar events on the Senior Campus and Year Groups will also be incorporating international perspectives in curriculum lessons. Teachers will also be contacting parents who may be able to share their knowledge and experiences through a range of activities on the day.

As always, I am sure that the school will be awash with vibrant colour as we celebrate the day with students encouraged to wear national costume or colours from any chosen country on this day with a reminder that enclosed shoes and sun-safe clothes should be worn.

Bandaged Bear Teddy Bears’ Picnic

We are delighted to support the Bandage Bear Appeal again this year, a charity that has a poignant place in the hearts of many at Redlands. There is something special about children helping other children and we look forward to supporting the charity raising money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Next Friday 19 March, all of our Junior Campus students from Preschool to Yr 6 will enjoy a Teddy Bears’ Picnic with buddy classes enjoying lunch together and students are encouraged to make a gold coin donation.

This is a particularly special fundraiser for many in our community and having visited the Children’s Hospice, Bear Cottage, which is affiliated to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the hospital itself, I know that our collective donation will have a significant impact on the lives of many families.

Redlands Swimming Team

Congratulations to our 31 Junior School swimmers who competed for Redlands in the HICES Swimming Carnival this week. With regional schools from as far as Orange, Blue Mountains and the Central Coast, our swimmers enjoyed the healthy competition and finished in a very creditable 3rd place in the top division. Well done to all who competed at this level.

Clean Up Australia Day

In our assembly this week, we were delighted to recognise the large number of Junior School students who joined forces with Redlands Secondary School students at last Sunday’s Clean Up Australia Day at Balmoral Beach.

One of the participants, Chloe Petering (Yr 6), spoke passionately and articulately in our assembly about the importance of shining a light on this environmental issue every day and not just on this one date in the year.

Thank you to all of the students involved and for making a difference in our community; we are very proud of you all.

Mosman Youth Awards in Literature

Over many years, Redlands students have enjoyed participating in the annual Mosman Youth Awards in Literature, a competition in prose and poetry writing. Over these years, our students have enjoyed a great deal of success in this annual competition and I share this year’s details for parents and students to consider.

Class teachers will be encouraging student involvement with this literary opportunity ahead of the closing date of Thursday 31 May. Please note that entry forms must be signed by a parent or guardian and not a teacher if the entrant is under 18 years of age.

For an entry form or more information, please click here or call Barry O’Keefe Library in Mosman on 9978 4091.

Spanish News – Education Perfect Languages Championships

Once again, our Junior School students will join others from all around the world learning languages, earning points towards awards and prizes for themselves, while helping Redlands to shine on an international platform.

The Championships start on Tuesday 16 March at 4.00pm and end on Tuesday 23 March at 4.00pm.

All Junior School students are automatically registered to participate and to compete they will need to answer Spanish language questions on Education Perfect. Points are awarded for all questions except self-marked questions and dash. Further details of the competition can be found on the Education Perfect website or on the EP app.

Certificates will be awarded to students with 500+ points and Junior School students will also have the chance to win gift vouchers and other prizes in our own school-based challenge.

I encourage all students to participate to improve their Spanish skills and have fun in this exciting and motivating competition. ¡Buena Suerte!

Belinda Oxley Scholarship – Design a Card Competition

As you may be aware, our next Redlands means-tested Scholarship has been named after Belinda Oxley, a much loved teacher from Redlands who influenced so many students in the pursuit of the Arts, and more closely the Visual Arts.

A fundraising Luncheon for Belinda’s scholarship will be held on Wednesday 26 May. The Prep and Junior Schools have been asked to participate in a Design a Card Competition to assist. Please click here for more details about the Competition. I strongly encourage as many students as possible to participate in this very important event.

All submissions must be received by the Junior or Preparatory School office by Wednesday 21 April (Term 2, Week 1). Artwork selection will take place on Thursday 22 April. Selected artworks will be announced in the following week’s Note Day and all artworks will be featured on Redlands Pulse in Term 2.

Students who have their artwork selected will receive a free pack of cards and surprise gift!

How it works:

  • Each team has 4 swimmers
  • Each swimmer swims a leg of the relay 200m
  • Participants can swim in their school year category, or an older category

PREP SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

Week 9 Learning Conversations 22-26 March

Prep School Learning Conversations will take place during Week 9, 22-26 March. These meetings will allow teachers and parents to discuss student learning to date and will also be an opportunity to outline “where to next” in your child’s learning journey.

The feedback from the COVID period was that parents appreciated being able to have their meeting with their teacher via Zoom so this term, parents will have the choice of a face-to-face meeting or a Zoom meeting. Zoom meetings will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays and face-to-face meetings will take place over the other days during the week.

Time slots will be 15 minutes but as some of you may have already made time to meet with your child’s class teacher this term, there is no expectation to meet again at this point in the term.

When can I book a time? At Redlands, we use School Interviews, an online booking system, which allows you to make multiple bookings for your Prep School child(ren) at one time. Bookings will open at 7.00am on Monday 15 March and close at 6.00pm on Thursday 18 March.

A full letter outlining the steps to take to book will be sent to you on Friday morning.

If you would like a conversation with a specialist or Learning Plus teacher or with myself, please contact us directly via email.

We all look forward to having meaningful discussions about your child’s learning.

Lifted COVID Restrictions

With the new legislative changes that came into effect last week in NSW schools, we are very pleased to advise that Prep School parents can now come on to the campus without having to use the QR scan to drop off and pick up students.

As has already been the case, parents must continue to use the QR code to scan in for any meetings or appointments with teachers including the upcoming Learning Review Meetings in Week 9.

Parents are still not permitted to enter the Prep School Library for family borrowing. Please keep communicating with the Library staff to continue this service.

After School Pick Up Times

Having our pick-up times back to normal has certainly been a blessing. Staff and students have loved the extra time to finish off the day well and to have a full lesson in the last session of the day.

Can I please remind everyone that once the time window closes for each Year Group, the next stage will begin. Staff will no longer be waiting for every child to be picked up before allowing the next grade in. If you miss your window, please don’t worry. Your child will remain in the car pick-up space with staff until you come through in the car line. They will be supervised and safe.

Please may I remind all families also that the underground car park gate needs to close at 3.20pm in order for the Junior School carline to begin. If you have been delayed, your child will be taken to OOSH until you can pick them up. This also applies to all after school activities throughout the week. Thank you for your understanding.

Prep Music Orientation Session

We are pleased to advise that although our ‘in person’ attendance quota is full for tomorrow morning’s session, we have set up a Zoom session for those who were hoping to hear more about our offerings. We look forward to having you log in with us on 12 March from 8.30-9.00am.

Rowing

Over the previous few weekends, the Rowing program has been steadily building up to this weekend’s NSW Boys Head of the River (Sat 13) and NSW Girls Head of the River (Sun 14) regattas. These regattas are our penultimate events of the Rowing season and are the cumulation of many months of hard work for our students and coaches alike.

On Sat 20 February we were delighted to name three of our new single scull boats at Mosman Rowing Club. Two of the sculls were named after our 2020 Rowing Captains Max Durrant and Maddi Howard to recognise their contribution to the Rowing program. The third boat was named after James Talbot, himself a previous Redlands student, who was the Boys Captain of Boats and graduated in 2010. James coached at Redlands for a number of years before transitioning into full time work at ANZ Bank and making a return to rowing on water. He previously represented Australia in the 2018 World Championships where he won a silver medal, only this week has James’ selection into the Australian Paralympic team for the Tokyo Olympics been confirmed.

The following weekend, the Rowing program raced at the ACT Head of the Lake along with the ACT Championships in Canberra. This was the first time this season that we have been able to travel for a regatta and is the first overnight camp/regatta that we have had in 12 months.

All of our crews faced some significant competition across the weekend with Cranbrook and Kinross having travelled from NSW but also notable schools from Canberra such as Canberra Grammar School, Canberra Girls Grammar and Radford competing in force. Despite the strong competition, a Redlands crew or sculler finished in either a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal position on 45 separate occasions.

The Governor-General of Australia His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley was on hand to present medals to many of our students.

Audra Olson (Yr 11) won her division of the School Girl Single scull while Alex Holtheuer (Yr 12) continued his dominance this season in the Single Scull, with a big win in both the School Boy Single Scull on Saturday and the Men’s Under 19 Single Scull on the Sunday but then also combined with Alex Verschoor to win the Men’s Under 19 Double Scull on Saturday. At the ACT Championships, Mikalea Sanger Larson (Yr 9) and Daisy Thomas (Yr 9) raced convincingly to finish in 1st and 2nd place in the Women’s Under 15 Single Scull.

Within the crew boats, in an all Redlands field, the Girls Yr 10 2nd Quad of Phoebe Cunningham, Yazi Coletran, Alana Mansfield, Charlotte Scamps and Hannah Mitchell (cox) won the Women’s C Grade Quad while the Boys Yr 9 2nd Quad of Alfie Leach, Ethan Beggs, Nicolas Laliberte, Arya Gapaillard and Fletcher Logan (cox) finished a close 2nd in the Men’s Under 16 Quad. Swimming

We had a fantastic day out at the ISA Swimming Carnival yesterday, with a number of amazing results across both the girls and boys races. There will be a full report in next week’s Note Day that will highlight some key individual results for the day as well as those students who have been selected to represent ISA at the CIS Championships next term.

Our girls stole the show taking home the Senior Division, Intermediate Division and finishing third in the Junior Division, and taking out the Overall Division 2 Shield!

Tennis

Saturday 6 March was the last round of regulation competition. A number of teams needed to win their Saturday match in order to put their team into the final, a number of which were successful. It was great to see students fight hard for every point and not give up, this was evident in the large number of tiebreakers that were played across all matches. Congratulations to all Summer Tennis students on their attitude, effort and commitment across the season.

This week, Saturday 13 March, all students will play in either the Final or a playoff match. Congratulations to Teams, 3, 4, 8, 11, 12, 17, 24 , 26 on finishing first or second in their respective divisions, they will play in a Final this week.

Important Dates

  • Saturday 13 March – NSTA Summer Tennis Finals/Playoffs (except Team 1)
  • Tuesday 16 March (Week 8) – Morning training for current Summer Tennis students who are continuing on with Winter Tennis
  • Thursday 18 March (Week 8) – Winter Tennis starts for all students. Details of training will be communicated to students, parents/carers separately.

Touch Football

Last week saw our Senior 1st and 3rd teams, along with our Jnr A and C teams travel out to Bathurst to take on Scots All Saints College, looking to secure a place in the finals. Our Jnr A team got off to a slow start, with the first half seeing no tries, the second half brought on a few errors from both teams with Scots All Saints getting the better of the girls taking the match 2-1. The girls still made it through to the finals which was great to see. Our Senior 1sts team had a strong win against Scots All Saints 1. With a focus being the finals, the girls were able to put together a number of well executed phase play to score some tries.

The Finals will take place this Saturday 13 March, with our 1st VI, Snr 3, Jnr A and Jnr E teams all featuring the draw can be found on the Redlands Rhino with the timings and fields lists.

Best of luck to all teams involved in the ISA Finals this weekend.

Athletics Carnival Program

The program for the Athletics Carnival scheduled for Wednesday 31 March is now available for viewing here. Please note the 1500m event is an open event but I would suggest only those students who can comfortably handle that distance along with their other events on the day should run in this event.

All other track events, as well as discus and turbo javelin, can be entered by students on the day.

Cross Country Carnival Preparation

A reminder that an information pack was emailed to all families last week outlining the selection criteria for the Carnival in Term 2. Please familiarise yourselves with this information and how the two courses on Cross Country are split.

Yrs 5 and 6 AFL

Currently, we are short on players to submit a team for our boys AFL side coming into our winter sports season which begins on Wednesday 24 March. If your son is keen to give AFL a go this year for his rep winter sport, we would happily welcome him in and adjust his previously nominated sport. Please view this video of encouragement from Tim Taranto, a midfielder from GWS Giants. He is a very talented young player, runs a 15.9 beep test and recently won the Kevin Sheedy Medal as Club Champion. Please email me if you would like to make this change.

Girls AFL commences on the same date but their matches begin in Term 3 and so are only training this term.

HICES Swimming

Grease

Last Sunday our full Musical Company began filming Grease. The excitement was intense as our students stepped into our studio to commence filming Act One. Masterfully edited and engineered by our tutor Mr Peter Atkins, our film score recorded by our musicians and vocalists sounded spectacular. It was so wonderful to have our full company together. Many of our student leaders are involved in the production. Here is what some of them have to say about the experience so far. The resilience, adaptability and determination of our company and young leaders is something of which we should all be very proud.

“The Redlands musical has always been my favourite time of the year, but being through the first professional filming of the musical has truly exceeded my expectations. The dedication from every member of the cast and crew has been wonderful, the commitment from everyone involved in the Musical organisation has been inspiring and the ability to have multiple takes has been such a relief.” Theo Mirrlees-Black, School Captain

“Just like in 1971, Grease started out as a musical and was soon adapted into the 1978 film GREASE. We are hoping that ours is just as big a hit and you enjoy the era of 1950’s inspired ‘greasy hair’ ‘greasy engines’ and can now enjoy it with ‘greasy food’ in the comfort of your own home! This has been a difficult yet rewarding experience for everyone involved and I would like to personally thank my greasy family production, band, hair and makeup and the cast for everything over the last two years and for their inspirational focus and their dedication to the Arts community. I would also like to make a formal thank you to the incredibly dedicated staff who have made this a positive transition and their continuous flexibility which has been transferred to the students. With your help, the Redlands Grease production can become the highest grossing film in 2021 just like it was in 1978. So come on Redlands community you better shape up! ” Maddie Hunt, Arts and Theatre Captain

“Filming began for Grease last Sunday and proved to be a huge success, with all members of the cast working incredibly hard to ensure that the day ran as smoothly as possible, considering it was our first time filming. The optimism and engagement from all students made the entire process incredibly enjoyable, and their continual positivity is to be congratulated, as, despite our disappointment of not being able to perform live at The Concourse, we have embraced the idea of a film version of Grease with eagerness and unparalleled enthusiasm. The Yr 12s would like to commend and thank each and every one of the Company for this, and that although it is not in the form we expected, we will still be putting on a spectacular show. It will be the very first, and likely last, ever time that a Redlands Musical shall be filmed and presented through such a medium. The Yr 12s, musicians, makeup artists, hairstylists, costume crew, production crew, staff, and of course the rest of the cast, are thrilled to present to you: Grease: The Musical – The Movie, coming to a theatre near you in 2021.” Toby Griffiths Drama Captain

“Filming Grease 2021 has so far been what one could only describe as the best possible outcome from a challenging situation; to a once in a lifetime experience. Participation in school musicals has been an incredibly large part of the Redlands journey of many students such as myself, and whilst the change of expectations that came with having the musical filmed was, at first, daunting, the thrill felt by myself and the rest of the cast during last Sunday’s filming day was truly ethereal. I am so looking forward to seeing where this experience takes us all.” Bethany Richardson Captain of Choirs

“As the making of the Redlands Musical Movie Grease continues to be nothing but fun and hard-earned success, we have students from all backgrounds in the school coming together to make a once in a lifetime viewing and production experience for all to see. Due to the earlier setbacks the School experienced in the production of the Musical, staff and students are readier and more enthusiastic than ever to band together and overcome the mighty hurdle of turning a musical play into a musical film production, as was the original 1971 movie Grease. A huge thank you to the cast for giving their best performances on stage and the production crews (including teachers) working behind the scenes to ensure the success and smooth transitions between scenes and sets whilst keeping track and maintenance of the numerous props that were used throughout the filming of the first Act. We would also like to thank the other makeup artists, hair stylists and costume designers for keeping the cast as sharp and snazzy as their 1971 counterparts were.” Gianni Watson Production Captain

“Time to whip out the popcorn and turn on the TV because we are coming at you with the most amazing movie musical and we can practically smell the Oscar nomination! Filming Grease has been one of the most incredible experiences ever – I mean, how many schools can you name that have produced their own movie musical… other than Redlands, you can’t name a single one, can you! Grease: The Musical: The Movie has been a truly magical experience for the cast and crew, and I think that they all deserve a round of applause for the immense amount of work which they have all put into it, even if they won’t be able to hear that applause live. With two years of rehearsals under our belt, the cast is more prepared than ever before and it’s easy to see that this will be one of the best musicals which the incomparable Mrs Daley has ever produced. A massive thank you to everyone who has worked on the Musical over the last two years, the continual positivity displayed by everyone involved, despite all the obstacles which we have faced as a production family, everyone remained enthusiastic and gave it their all, displaying a show of dedication to the Arts community, which has been nothing short of inspiring. Now, after two years everyone will finally be able to see a fabulous display of talent, perseverance and dedication, the likes of which Redlands has never seen. So sit back, relax and enjoy Grease: The Musical: The Movie, coming to a living room near you!” Felix Abrahams Arts Captain

Tickets for Grease: The Musical: The Movie go on sale shortly.

Singing Altogether Once Again

The Music Department has had much reason for celebration these past few days, following the announcement from NSW Health relating to the lifting of previous restrictions for singing in groups. As notified, there are no recommended limits on the number of performers in singing groups, including for in-class educational activities such as group repetition, chanting, recitation, or singing activities.

Already across the larger venues of our school, the combined voice of students is echoing down the hallway as ensembles prepare for their upcoming Music Festival performances in May (Secondary School) and July (Junior School).

It has been absolutely wonderful to see the joy in everyone’s faces as they once again create harmonious music together.
