Basketball

The ISA Basketball Finals were held on Saturday at Penrith. It was a huge day for Redlands Basketball with 13 teams playing. The day kicked off with the Junior B and 1st Girls. The Junior B Girls had a thrilling game against Blue Mountains Grammar School with both teams trading baskets throughout the game. Coming right down to the wire, one of the players from BMGS made a shot from deep to seal the game for BMGS. The 1st Girls were up against last year’s reigning champions, Central Coast Grammar School. With the lead swapping many times throughout the first half, both teams were fighting hard for the win. Some of the senior players really stepped up in the second half and Redlands started to run away with the game. A massive 32 points from Captain Olivia Hatch helped the team across the line. Congratulations to the Redlands 1st Girls for finishing the season undefeated and taking out the Division 1 Open Championship shield for the first time since 2015.

The Inter A Girls played against Chevalier College who they had beaten two times previously in the regular season. A great start to the game by Chevalier had Redlands ten points down nearing the second half. In the final minutes of play, the lead changed several times and Redlands found themselves one point up with less than a minute to play. A last minute possession to Chevalier saw a successful shot attempt, putting Redlands down one point with less than ten seconds to play. A final play gave Redlands two shot attempts for the win, unfortunately neither of these shots dropped, giving Chevalier the win. The Junior A team played against CCGS. A great start by CCGS gave them a strong lead early in the game. With both teams going back and forth, trading baskets in the second half it was clear the game would come down to the wire. Unfortunately Central Coast proved too strong in the final minutes, with the game finishing as a 31-35 loss to Redlands. The 13A Boys played against Oakhill College in what proved to be another very close game from start to finish with Redlands affected by injury. At the end of regular time the score was tied up and the teams were headed into overtime. A strong overtime period from both teams had Redlands up by one point with 3.5 seconds left on the clock and an Oakhill possession. A quick missed shot by an Oakhill player and it looked like it would be Redlands for the win, however, a foul on the rebound gave Oakhill the opportunity to tie up the game and both teams headed to their benches to prepare for a second overtime. Two successful free throws near the end of the second overtime gave Redlands with a two point lead with just three seconds to play. Oakhill managed to score in the final three seconds sending the game into golden point. Redlands had the first possession in the golden point period, however, an unsuccessful shot attempt gave Oakhill the chance to score a cheap basket of their own, leaving Oakhill as the champions.

The 1st Boys, 15C and 15A teams were up next, with all teams finishing as the higher placed seed in the regular season. The 15C Boys have been undefeated this season, and were up against Chevalier to fight it out for the championship. The Redlands boys kept their composure and managed to keep a five point lead between themselves and the opposition by the final siren. The 15A Boys who were also undefeated and played against Oakhill College. Once our 15A boys warmed up they found their usual form and showed why they have been the undefeated team this season. Finishing the game with a 47-30 win, it was a great season for this team. The 1st Boys played against St Greg’s who they have beaten two times throughout the regular season. Some tactical defensive changes saw Redlands slow down the inside scoring from St Pat’s and Redlands held a lead in the first half. Sharp shooting from St Greg’s in the second half made it hard for our 1st Boys to respond and St Greg’s were able to slowly put more points between the two teams, finishing with a 80-93 loss for the Redlands 1st Boys.

The 15D Boys played against St Patrick’s College and having beaten this team earlier in the season were confident they could continue their undefeated streak to take out the championship. A close start to the game saw St Patricks with an early lead as Redlands found it hard to break through their zone defence. Regrouping in the second half the Redlands 15Ds take the lead back and finished the game comfortably with a 25-18 win. Congratulations to many of these boys who have now had two undefeated seasons in a row. The 17A Boys knew it would be a tough match up, as they were 1-1 with St Greg’s throughout the regular season. Although it was a close game, some great composure from Redlands in the final minutes of the game saw a 36-32 win for our 17As. The 17B Boys were playing against Oakhill Gold who had beaten them two times throughout the season. Both teams had some great passages of play throughout the game, with Oakhill just in front on the scoreboard in the final minutes. Redlands 17Bs fought hard to try to close the lead, however, Oakhill proved too strong and finished with a five point lead over Redlands.

The 2nd Boys played against St Augustine’s. St Augustine’s started the game in great form, giving them an early lead. The Redlands 2nd boys fought hard and kept the game close, however, unfortunately couldn’t close the gap and finished the game with a 25-32 loss. The 3rd Boys played against St Pius and both teams found it hard to put points on the board in the first half, it was clear it would come down to performance in the second half. A one point lead to St Pius with under ten seconds to go meant Redlands needed a steal to have a chance at winning the game. A steal on the inbounds gave Redlands a great look at a layup which unfortunately rolled out, giving St Pius a one point win.

Well done to all teams who played in the finals. It was a great day with many close games and all players should be proud of their efforts across the day. Congratulations to our Girls Basketball program for taking out the overall Girls Championship Shield for 2020.

Tickets close tomorrow (Friday) for the End of Season Basketball Presentation. The presentation will be held on Saturday 21 March at the Senior Campus from 10.00am-2.00pm.

Netball trials and training are taking place just before the event and we encourage all players to stay around for some food and drinks and to spend more time getting to know their team mates. It will also provide an opportunity for any parents interested in joining the Friends of Netball for this upcoming season to learn more about what the group does for the sport at Redlands and how they might go about joining.

If parents could please RSVP to this event by emailing Jess Howard so that the Friends of Netball can ensure they cater for all attendees.

From the Principal

I thoroughly enjoyed attending the International Women’s Day (IWD) breakfast at the Mosman Art Gallery last Friday, hosted by Mosman Council, along with our Junior School Captains and Secondary School Service Captains. Maeve O’Meara provided an entertaining and thought-provoking address which impressed our students, in terms of the barriers she had overcome and her drive and inspiration.

The Secondary School students were fortunate to have Mary Jerram AM as the guest speaker at our IWD Assembly this week. Born in New Zealand, Mary began her working life as a high school English teacher before moving to Australia to study Law. Her career subsequently included stints as a Legal Officer at the Independent Teachers’ Union and as a Senior Advocate at the Legal Aid Commission, rising to become Deputy Chief Magistrate of the Local Court of New South Wales in 2000 and in 2007 she became the first female State Coroner of NSW.

I enjoyed the opportunity to talk to the students about my experiences in leading my previous school to become fully coeducational and my subsequent membership of the group ‘CEOs for Gender Equity’ in Perth. The group formed to address key issues such as the large gender pay gap in many organisations in WA and the low percentage of women in C-suite and Board Director roles. I highlighted the benefits our students gain in learning together in a coeducational environment that will assist them in life beyond school when they are working and leading together as equals. I also touched on the importance of diversity of thinking in leadership and the move in many companies to strategically aim for a more diverse workforce, as research has demonstrated it leads to improved outcomes.

I thoroughly enjoyed being at Penrith for the ISA Basketball Grand Finals on the weekend and congratulate all our teams that played on the day. My heart certainly had a workout with so many close games and our teams fought valiantly in all contests. It was wonderful to see the large amount of support on the day. I congratulate all members and coaches of our teams that played in the Grand Finals and in particular the 1st Girls team who won the ISA Shield as well as the Boys 17A, 15A, 15C and 15D teams who were victorious. In addition, Redlands Girls teams were awarded the Overall ISA Girls Basketball Shield for their performances over the entire season. The 1st Girls team now go on to compete with the winners of other school competitions with the goal of going on to represent the State at the National Schools Basketball Championships. It has certainly been a very strong season in Basketball.

Congratulations to all our students who represented the School in the ISA Swimming Carnival on Wednesday. It is an honour to be selected to compete at this event and there were a number of outstanding performances.

Olivia Donoghue Division 1A: 50m Freestyle 1st – 28.03; 100m Freestyle 1st – 1:00.80; 50m Butterfly 2nd – 29.76
Sam Virtue  Division 1A: 50m Breaststroke 3rd – 36.88; 50m Butterfly 2nd – 28.94
Erik Scott Division 1A: 50m Backstroke 3rd – 31.69
Xander Halfen Division 1A: 50m Backstroke 3rd – 34.63
Chloe Jennings  Division 1A: 50m Freestyle 2nd – 30.18; 50m Breaststroke 2nd – 42.48; 100m Freestyle 3rd – 1:09.75; 50m Backstroke 3rd – 39.01

Josh Miller Division 1A: 50m Breaststroke 3rd – 36.77
Inter Boys 4x50m Relay (Erik Scott, Sam Virtue, Josh Miller & Max Symons) 3rd

The Intermediate Boys finished in 3rd place in Division 1 and the Senior Girls in 4th place in Division 1.

I also pass on my best wishes to our Rowing crews competing in the ACT Head of the Lake and ACT Championships this weekend and know that they are very well prepared. It was a pleasure to recently get out on the water with our Director of Rowing, James Petering to see our Senior crews in action early in the morning.

Head of Secondary School

Covid-19 Update

Our Principal, Mr Webber, has been sending out regular communication about the School’s response to the Covid-19 outbreak in Australia, and in the Secondary School we appreciate your continued support and patience during this time. The health and safety of members of our community is, as always, paramount when making decisions and we are regularly receiving advice from external bodies and organisations as we review our practices and scheduled events. Unfortunately, we have already had to cancel the Yr 9 Market Days scheduled for Monday 16 March and Tuesday 17 March due to possible risks associated with food preparation and handling, as well as increased social contact during the market itself. In Tuesday’s Assembly, I gave our students an update of the current situation and reminded them of the importance of personal hygiene practices such as washing hands, covering coughs or sneezes and avoiding any unnecessary physical contact such as shaking hands. Our staff are also preparing for the possibility of more remote learning and teaching practices in the case of a campus closure which has already been the case in a few schools. If this eventuality occurred, we would aim to maintain as much of a regular teaching and learning program as possible, using iLearn as our online classroom and Zoom for video conferencing of lessons. We will also be evaluating any impacts on student learning and scheduled assessments, especially for senior students, if there were any disruptions to the regular program. We once again ask parents to keep any students who are unwell at home and to follow the latest Department of Health advice in terms of any necessary testing and a return to school.

International Women’s Day Assembly

During Tuesday’s assembly we celebrated International Women’s Day at Redlands to both acknowledge the achievements of women and reflect on some of the gender inequalities and injustices still present in Australia and around the world. During the Assembly, we heard from our guest speaker, Mary Jerram, who is the former State Coroner of NSW and who was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2018 Australia Day Honours: “For significant service to the law in New South Wales as State Coroner, and as a role model for women in the legal profession”. She spoke to the assembly about the challenges and obstacles she has faced in her career and how she has overcome these in her lifetime. We also heard from our Service Captain, Maya Auld, who shared some of her reflections after attending the Mosman Council’s International Women’s Day Breakfast the previous week, and we also heard from our Principal, Mr Webber, who shared with us some of his views and insights, in particular around the benefits of everyone learning together in a coeducational environment.

ISA Swimming

Yesterday we had over 50 Secondary School students representing Redlands at the ISA Swimming Championships. There were a number of excellent results on the day with the Intermediate Boys placing 3rd overall in Division 1 and the Senior Girls placing 4th overall in Division 1. Individually, we had a number of place getters across the age groups. However, I would like to especially acknowledge Olivia Donoghue (Yr 11) who finished 1st in the 50m Freestyle, 1st in the 100m Freestyle and 2nd in the 50m Butterfly. I would also like to thank the many Yr 10 students who spent the day volunteering at the Carnival as Redlands was the host school for this event. They represented themselves and our School admirably.

Summer Sports Update

On Saturday, 13 of our boys and girls Basketball teams competed in their respective Grand Finals in the ISA competition. It was a great day of competition with many exciting finishes and a few heartbreaking defeats. Our 1st V girls team had a tough contest against Central Coast Grammar before pulling away in the final quarter to be crowned ISA Division 1 Girls Basketball Champions – a wonderful achievement. In addition, overall Redlands won the ISA Girls Basketball Shield which is given to the most successful girls Basketball program across the age groups of the ISA. This is the first time Redlands has taken out this prestigious title. I would also like to congratulate the 17A, 15A, 15C and 15D boys teams for winning their respective Grand Finals, as well as all of the teams who competed admirably on Saturday. I would also like to wish our rowers all the best as they had down to Canberra to compete in the Head of the Lake this weekend.

Uniform Update – Shorts

Please note that shorts for Secondary School boys have arrived in the Uniform Shop. These can be purchased from Friday for boys to wear as part of the summer uniform in Terms 1 and 4. Please note boys will also need to wear the long grey socks with shorts as part of this uniform.

Jazz in the Basement

We are excited for our 2020 Music launch event, Jazz in the Basement, this Saturday 14 March from 6.00- 8.00pm. Come and bring a meal while hearing our musicians perform in the Undercroft – which for the evening will be transformed into a New York jazz club! Tickets can be purchased through the Music Department or TryBooking

Parking and Drop Off/Pick Up

We appreciate the challenges of parking, as well as the drop off and pick up of students, around the Secondary School, and thank the majority of parents who follow proper guidelines. However, we have had recent reports of some unsafe practices during drop off and pick up of students around the Campus before or after school. Once again, we ask parents to use the designated drop off and pick up zones on Waters Road or Winnie Street and not to double park in local streets or pull into the bus parking lot in front of the Adams Centre. The safety of our students, members of our community and members of the wider community is paramount. Lastly, please may I remind you to be respectful and considerate of our neighbours. It is not acceptable to block or even park in someone’s driveway. Please also be mindful of noise on local streets, especially during early morning drop offs for before school activities. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation and support.

Careers

Life as a Sports Cameraman

Interested students had the opportunity to meet Nathan Bartley, who has worked as a self employed cameraman/editor in the (sports) media industry worldwide for the past ten years. Nathan’s highlights have been working on the Ryder Cup, Cricket World Cups and the Australian Open. Tom Morris in Yr 12 commented “Nathan was an inspirational figure who talked to us about his journey of becoming a freelance photographer. He gave the group guidance in what he would do differently and the best things about his job. Nathan gave us great insight into the world of sports photography.”

If you have an interesting career story to share with students, please contact Simone Salier.

Chaplain

Given current world events, it is a good time to focus on optimism and hope.

There is hope as God has promised to restore our world and put an end to the things that ravage us. Jesus, when he walked the earth, gave us glimpses of this future restored world as he calmed storms, healed the sick and raised the dead.

There is hope as Jesus promised to be present with us to the end of the Age. He is with us as we navigate the unexpected, the sad and the joys of life. The assurance that the God of all comfort is with us and caring for us, gives us a calm that stills our fears.

There is hope as we are created in the image of God with creativity and rational thought. We see this in action as our medical workers and scientist investigate solutions to the crisis.

There is hope as we are not left without testimony of a powerful and compassionate God who promises life and life in abundance for now and for the next life. Today is not all there is to life!

We may take a moment to reflect on our own understanding of the world and how the God of the bible speaks to us. Life does not just consist of the physical but the spiritual as well. As we understand our spiritual nature and the God who gave us this, we find a depth of peace and security that sustains us.

Uniform and Personal Grooming

Please could I ask for your support on this issue. Please remind your sons that it is an expectation that students are clean shaven for school. Girls should not be wearing necklaces and if they choose to wear earrings, they should be simple studs in single pierced ears.

Student Achievements

Olivia Wintle has been selected to represent Australia at the FIAC Flanders International Acrobatic Cup in Belgium. This competition is due to take place in April. The training commitment per week for this high-level commitment can be in excess of 20 hours for Olivia. We wish her every success as she represents Australia on the global stage.

Olivia Donoghue has been selected for the Open State Swim Championships this weekend. Olivia is hoping to qualify for the Nationals and we are incredibly proud of the marvellous progress she has made with her swimming.

Sofia Stuckmann has been selected to play Beach Volleyball at the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships (AJBVC) at Coolangatta. Australia’s emerging girls and boys Beach Volleyball players represent their state and compete for an opportunity to be crowned the Australian Junior Beach Champions. States/Territories also compete for the Andy Burdin Shield which is awarded to the best performing State/Territory during the event. We wish her all the best at the championships.

Study Skills Tip For March – Top Tips for Memorising Notes

Many students find it really difficult to cope with the memorisation that can be needed for examinations. Of course, you can’t just rote learn and regurgitate, you need to be able to apply the skills of what you have learnt. However, there is also a certain amount of memorisation of content, formulas and definitions that are necessary. So how can students make this process easier?

  1. Make your notes as brain-friendly as possible, point form, tables, diagrams and avoid big, long sentences or paragraphs.
  2. Start the memorisation process of your notes early and don’t wait until just before the test or examination.
  3. Memorisation involves testing yourself over and over and over and over. So read a section, then see what you can say or write down without looking. Then go back and see what you got wrong or didn’t know.  Put a pencil mark next to these points.
  4. Now focus on the points you didn’t know. Say them out loud, repeat them to yourself, write them down a few times.
  5. Then test yourself on those points again and see if you remembered more this time.
  6. Do this over and over and over again. Then do it one more time again.
  7. Make flashcards or use a flashcard App on your phone to create flashcards on the parts you find hard to remember. Review these every day before the test.
  8. Make a list of the key concepts you find hard to learn and each night read through them just before you go to sleep and first thing when you wake up as these are powerful memory times.
  9. Engage in lots of practice questions and do this without looking at your notes or the answers to see if you can a) remember and b) apply the information. Review the areas that you did not remember again.
  10. Your job is to keep testing yourself in order to find out which points have not stuck in your memory yet, so you can review these until they do.

Online HSC Minimum Standards Test

In 2016, the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) announced that all HSC students would be required to demonstrate a minimum standard of Literacy and Numeracy before they could be awarded the HSC. You have recently been sent a letter from Mr David Randall, Dean of Academic Studies, explaining this process. Mr Randall also addressed the Year Group in assembly this week to inform the students that they will have an opportunity to do online practice tests starting next Friday and will sit the actual tests during the Yr 10 Examination block in Term 2. Although passing these tests is not a requirement of the IB, Redlands will be requiring all Yr 10 students to take them, regardless of whether they intend to select the HSC or IB for next year. Any questions, please direct them to drandall@redlands.nsw.edu.au. More information can be found here.

Pastoral Care Program

Students are beginning to look at the need for flexible thinking and the ability to see different perspectives. Flexible thinking allows for multiple solutions to be considered when tackling a problem and is a vital component of developing resilience.

Social Awareness Program

This week students have been selecting an organisation that helps with the issue of youth homelessness for them to focus on for the rest of the term. They will be getting to know this organisation in detail in the coming weeks.

SchoolTV: How Much Do You Know About Sleep?

Our bodies produce a sleep chemical called melatonin to help us fall asleep. For younger children it is produced early in the evening, but for teens it occurs around 11.00pm. It is recommended for teenagers to get around nine hours of sleep, but if your adolescent is only falling asleep around midnight, then they are a long way off from being ready to be woken at 7.00am. Being less alert when they arrive at school can impact negatively on their ability to learn and retain information. So, how much do you really know about sleep? Take the quiz SchoolTV quiz and find out.

Yr 8 Camp

We are looking forward to Yr 8 camp on 4-8 May in Yarrahapinni. Further information and medical forms will be distributed in the next weeks. This is a beautiful location with a lot of opportunity for students to explore various ecosystems and take part in a range of physical activities.

Parent Suggested Resources this week: Adolescent Risk-Taking

You may have heard your child mention the discussion during Pastoral Time this term revolving around positive and negative risk-taking. Students were introduced to risk-taking in Yr 7 PDHPE and will continue this topic in Pastoral Time and PDHPE in Yr 8. We are aiming to provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their own actions as well as educate students about how their brains work and why they might behave a certain way during their teenage years. With a bit of knowledge and understanding, we aim to make more educated decisions moving forward. Below are a few articles from various organisations on this exact topic.

Yr 8 Pastoral Program

This term, students will focus on developing their understanding of self-management and responsible decision making through setting clear goals, creating an evolving term planner to be added to and adapted throughout the term, and by studying positive and negative risk-taking. Outcomes for this term include understanding the connections between emotions and choices, identifying safe and unsafe risks, understanding how choices/impulses can impact personal wellbeing and resilience, and to be introduced to some of the consequences involved in these decisions.

Peer Support

Each year around 24 Yr 11 students volunteer to support our Yr 7s as they transition to life in the Secondary School. They meet during Tutor Time in their House each fortnight during Semester 1. The Peer Support Captains, Aoibheann MacLochlainn and Stephanie Larcos, select appropriate activities from the Peer Support program and train the volunteers before the Friday sessions. The Heads of House provide the overall guidance during the program.

The Yr 7 program explores how to rethink challenges and build resilience. It looks into self-talk, having a growth mindset, success and realistic goal setting, the importance of reflection and critical thinking especially when facing setbacks. Building healthy relationships through effective communication, empathy, valuing and celebrating others are key elements throughout the fortnightly meetings. It also provides an opportunity to our Yr 7s to get to know some of our senior students in a more significant way.

The sessions are always high energy and the Yr 7s are loving the interaction, activities and games.

Congratulations

Congratulations to all Yr 7 students who auditioned for Gala Arts. This is a highly competitive process, and it is wonderful to note that students are willing to push personal boundaries, and put themselves outside of their comfort zones. We look forward to seeing how they progress through this exciting process.

Yr 6 Camp

Please enjoy some Yr 6 Camp photos on Redlands Pulse.

Our first Junior School camp of 2020 is all but over as Yr 6 have enjoyed a wonderful few days in Canberra this week.

For 13 of the cohort, the week started with them competing as part of the Redlands Swimming team on Monday at the HICES Carnival before they headed down separately to the main group with Mr Carter. They arrived just before dinner and quickly integrated into their respective groups and slept well on that first night!

Canberra is enjoying beautiful weather this week and our students have been actively engaged in some rich learning experiences in both civics and outdoor education such as camping, canoeing, a high ropes course and mountain biking, interspersed with curriculum-related learning experiences at Questacon, CSIRO, The Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy and the wonderful National Gallery of Australia. This diverse range of activities makes this camp arguably my favourite Junior School camp, which a lot of the students I have spent time with have agreed.

One of the things that has made me particularly proud has been observing how the students have supported and looked after one another and consistent feedback I have received from various sources about how polite, engaged and respectful the group have been.

Whilst our oldest age group in the Junior School, it was still lovely to see new friendships and connections being developed as the students had a lot of fun creating memories together, which I’m sure you will hear about upon their return. As a Year Group, they are possibly the most connected and united I have seen over many years and this is also something other teachers and group leaders are observing.

For me, simple opportunities to sit and enjoy a conversation over a meal with students are always a highlight for me alongside actively joining them in these sessions. As I said to one parent just this week, I often reflect on having one of the best jobs in the world and feel very privileged to be in a profession that serves my passion and purpose. Trips like this merely confirm this.

My gratitude is extended to the teachers in loco parentis for their care of each child in the group. It is a huge responsibility but the meticulous planning of Mrs Robinson and Ms Cosolito, in particular, has helped with the smooth organisation of the week.

I look forward to welcoming the group back at approximately 4.00pm on Friday afternoon on the Murdoch Street side of the Campus where there is a designated bus zone, which I ask parents to keep clear. As in previous returns, we will aim to stagger the return of the three coaches by a few minutes to help with the safe return and departure of the students.

International Women’s Day

It was heartening to see a sea of hands go up in Monday’s assembly when students were asked of the significance of last Sunday as I spent time with the students acknowledging and celebrating last Sunday’s International Women’s Day. This year’s theme, #EachforEqual, focused on the importance of an equal world being an enabled world. As a coeducational school, a gender equal world is one that our students simply see as the norm but we did discuss how this is not always the case in many parts of our globe in so many different ways.

Like many of the students, I had watched the final of the T20 Women’s Cricket World Cup final last week and explained to the students the joy of seeing nearly 90,000 cricket fans in the MCG for this game; something that would have been unheard of perhaps even five years ago for a women’s game but also highlighted the closing gap in gender equal sports coverage and profile. I also shared how I love seeing our coed sports teams compete on more than equal terms with all-boys schools and just last week, I watched most of our eight senior Basketball teams compete against a local boys’ school with every one of our teams having a mixture of girls and boys.

In the final part of the assembly, I shared some of the women who have inspired me in my life and also talked about a former Headmistress of the School, Miss Roseby, who led the School with great inspiration and innovation during two World Wars between 1911 and 1945. A number of students also volunteered to talk about females that they are inspired by, which was a great way in which to end the assembly.

School Photos Reminder

Please be reminded that Junior School class and individual photos will be taken next Friday 20 March. All students should ensure that their uniform complies with the School regulations as per page 20 of the Student Planner. Blazers will be required for these photos.

Judo Success

I was delighted to hear of the recent Judo successes of Yr 5 student, Sergey Philips, who achieved three medals in the last month in competitions.

  • Canberra International – Gold Medal
  • Sydney International – Bronze Medal
  • Budokan Judo Tournament – Gold Medal

These successes have secured Sergey’s place in the NSW State team whom he will represent at The Australian National Championships on the Gold Coast in June. Well done, Sergey!

Personal Hygiene

I wanted to take this opportunity to reiterate the importance of hygiene and protocols for students who are unwell. We have been reinforcing good hygiene habits with our students and ask that you also reinforce the following at home:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water, after coughing or sneezing, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow.
  • Dispose of used tissues immediately and use alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
  • Avoid unnecessary physical contact with others through handshaking and other close contact.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Unwell Students

It is important that you keep your child home from school if they are unwell. If they have a fever, runny nose, sore throat and/or cough they must stay home and follow medical advice. In the event that your child presents with flu-like symptoms at school, as with any other virus or infectious disease, they will be sent to the Teacher Aides or School Nurse and parents will be contacted to make arrangements for them to return home as soon as possible.

Seesaw

The continuity of learning is of paramount importance to the School. We are actively looking at methods for online learning to support the students in the event of a school closure. Currently all families have access to Seesaw, the online portfolio system the Prep School use to share students’ learning. This platform also has the capability for teachers to supply learning activities and students to interact with their teachers. Could all families please make sure they have access to Seesaw through the QR code that was placed in Student Planners at the beginning of the school year. If you do not have this, please contact your class teacher. The School will continue to update and communicate with you about on line learning should the need arise.

Toys/Watches at School

Could you please be advised that watches with camera, video and call functions are not permitted at school. These include Spacetalk, Vtech Kidizoom and Apple watches. Thank you for your close attention to this.

Parent Teacher Learning Meetings

As per the letter sent to all parents on Wednesday 26 February, Parent Teacher Learning Meetings will be held for the Preparatory School in Week 8, between Monday 16 and Friday 20 March. Bookings have now closed on line therefore if you missed out on the opportunity to book, please contact your class teacher directly. These meetings are a wonderful opportunity for collaboration between parent and teacher and I therefore urge you to take up this important time with your child’s teacher.

Seniors and Transition Gold Parent Teacher Meetings

Redlands House Seniors and Transition Gold Parent Teacher meetings take place next week. If you missed out on making a booking to see your child’s teacher, please reach out to your teacher to secure a meeting time. This is a wonderful time to celebrate your child’s success and build the partnership between home and school.

Independence

At Redlands House we strongly encourage independence. We love seeing the children carry their own bags, pack away their belongings and look after their food containers. As children grow and develop, they become more skilled with taking care and expressing themselves and exploring their world independently. Independence contributes to the development of self-esteem, identity and wellbeing. Accomplishing tasks and experiencing failure, produces a powerful sense of learning and achievement which is vital for children in the early years.

Orange Class Juniors are proud to share a range of ideas that they can do on their own, including riding bikes, sitting on aeroplanes, putting clothes on and brushing their teeth.

HICES Swimming

Congratulations to all our swimmers who represented Redlands at the HICES Carnival during the week. With an early start, it was a long day for our Yr 6 students who after a day of swimming had to Canberra for their Yr 6 Camp. We had some students who broke their own PBs, for others this was their first interschool carnival. Some great swims from students with a full program: Isobel Campbell, Luca Gazzilli, Charlotte Algar, Mati Carlyon, Luka Gordon and Joshua Svensson.

Special mention to our swimmers who were rewarded for their fabulous efforts at HICES who will now go on to represent HICES at the NSWCIS Swimming Carnival later this term.

  • Joshua Svensson
  • Boys 10 year 4x50m Relay team (Zac Holgate, Giorgio Gazzilli, Joshua Svensson)
  • Luca Gazzilli

CIS AFL Trials

Unfortunately, no one made it through but they kept their chins up regardless. It was a tough day trying to showcase their talent in torrential rain! We are very proud of how they conducted themselves and all made an effort to meet and chat to players from all over NSW, some travelling for six hours just to try out! Now they’re looking forward to Regionals together with their teammates and the girls team for Paul Kelly Cup.

Cross Country

Training

We can now confirm that we are offering Cross Country training for interested students which will take place rain, hail or shine as we have a wet weather back up venue. These sessions are on each Monday morning on the oval from 7.00am for 7.15am start. They will incorporate general fitness, agility, pace work and fun fitness games.

Carnival

Our Cross Country carnival will be held on Thursday 7 May through the grounds of Cammeray Golf Club. All students in Yrs 3-6 will be involved in some capacity. There is a championship run where the top five boys and girls in each age group who place will progress through to the HICES team.

Students will be selected to run in the Championship Course based on their results they achieve in the multi-stage fitness test (commonly known as the beep test) which will be conducted in your child’s PE lessons later this term or early Term 2. It is no problem if your child qualifies from the beep test results but does not want to run in the Championship Course, they can run the fun run course.

Those students who do not meet the qualifying level will automatically be entered into the Fun Run course.

Invitation for parent helpers will go out soon.

2021 HICES and CIS Selections

At various times throughout the year, Redlands is invited to nominate Yr 5 or Yr 6 students to attend various sport trials in our pathways. This can include HICES or IPSHA (the sporting association which we belong to) and/or CIS (Combined Independent Schools) which is the next level after HICES or IPSHA. Sometimes we nominate teams (eg Netball in the coming weeks), other times we can nominate individuals. The nomination process is such that sometimes an internal trial is conducted at school for those sports that we do not offer. An example of this is Touch Football where a trial is taking place on Wednesday 18 March to see who will go through to CIS trials later this term. For those sports we do play here, but where the trials occur before the season commences (example being Football and AFL), we nominate students to attend based on the season prior. So, for the 2021 Football and AFL trials next year we will nominate students from those sports based on their attitude, ability and attendance in the upcoming 2020 season. And finally, some sports require a ‘paper trial’ such as diving, golf etc where students are invited to attend as long as they can provide the Association proof that they are competent in that sport.

Snowsports

Junior School parents and students are invited to be part of another incredible action packed Snowsports season and a special welcome to those who plan on joining our vibrant community on the slopes for the first time.

Redlands has been involved in competitive Snowsports for many years and has won numerous awards at the national level for individual events and as a school. We are committed to preparing our students to ride and ski safely and competently to enjoy this wonderful lifelong family sport.

The program commences with the start of the winter school holidays and, if your children are keen to compete, they can enter the Redlands Cup followed by the Sydney Interschools Championships. Children can compete in a wide variety of ski and snowboard events with Redlands offering specialist training (Yrs 1 to 12).

Please note race week (information on Redlands Pulse) is only for students in Yr 7 through to Yr 12. These events will take place in the week beginning 9 July. All Snowsports information can be found on Redlands Pulse.
