Issue 6 2023 Term 1 Week 6 - 09 Mar 2023

From the Principal

On Wednesday we celebrated International Women’s Day with splashes of purple visible around the School. Over the course of this week, it has been wonderful to see the various events and assemblies across both campuses where students and staff have had the opportunity to reflect upon and discuss the significance of this day.

The International Women’s Day 2023 Campaign Theme is #EmbraceEquity and it is a call for all of us to challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias and seek out inclusion. These aims not only go to the heart of our Redlands Mission which espouses diversity and inclusivity, but have also been a part of our DNA throughout our 139 year history, stretching all the way back to the founding of the school in 1884 by Miss Clara Arnold and Miss Elizabeth Liggins.

In the Preparatory School, Mrs Breckenridge encouraged teachers this week to have discussions with students about important women in their lives. In the Junior School Assembly on Tuesday, our Deputy Principal, Ms Partington, spoke to the students about the differences between “equality” and “equity”, and she challenged them to continue to be curious and ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of the different issues people face.

In Tuesday’s Secondary School Assembly, a panel of student and staff speakers shared some their reflections on the significance of the day. Mr Thomas and Yr 12 students, Seb Tang and Trinity Hoffman, spoke about the important female role models in their lives and how they have inspired them; Yr 11 student, Grace Durrant, shared examples of some of the discrimination she has faced as a female surfer; Director of Basketball, Ms Renae Camino, reflected upon the movement toward gender equity in sport; and Ms Martin spoke about the advantages of attending a coeducational school to broaden our understanding of feminism and counteract negative stereotypes.

In the assembly one of our two Secondary School Captains, Josie Simpson, best summed up the importance of the day as follows, “This day allows us to recognise how far we have come, and how far we still have to go to accomplish complete gender equity, because the reality is that we are not there yet. On this day, we acknowledge the inequalities that women face each day, but we also celebrate the contributions of women in all areas of life. We celebrate those who came before us, those who stand beside us now and those who will come after.”

Hopefully, these events have been a further impetus for our community to continue to actively support and “embrace equity”, not just this week, but throughout the year, both here at Redlands and outside of the school gates, as well.

I congratulate our Rowing teams which won a total of 29 medals last weekend at the ACT Junior Rowing Championships on Saturday and the ACT Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday, including 9 Gold, 8 Silver and 12 Bronze. Please see the Secondary School Sport section of Note Day for further details on the success of our 130 rowers from Yrs 8-12 at these two events in Canberra.

I would like to extend my best wishes to all Secondary School summer sports teams competing in their respective ISA Grand Finals this weekend, and in particular the 1st Girls Basketball and 1st Girls Touch Football teams. I hope to see many Redlands supporters out at Penrith Basketball Stadium or Macquarie University cheering on our teams.

The countdown is on for our Redlands Autumn Fair on Saturday 18 March and I am very much looking forward to connecting with our entire Redlands community for a day of fun, food and entertainment for the whole family.

To enjoy the rides, games and food at the Autumn Fair, you can prepurchase wristbands and coupons HERE to receive a special discount; and you can volunteer a few hours of your time to help make this event a success HERE.

Community Update

The International Women’s Day 2023 Campaign Theme of #EmbraceEquity has been embedded and celebrated through a number of community events and assemblies this week at Redlands. We have a long and proud history of women leading the way, stretching all the way back to the founding of the school in 1884 by Clara Arnold and Elizabeth Liggins, and we continue to continue to actively support, promote and embrace equity both here at Redlands and in our wider community.

With our Autumn Fair just around the corner (next Saturday, 18 March), and an early bird discount still available, now is the perfect time to secure your ride passes and coupons. Autumn Fair is a day centred around food, fun and entertainment, showcasing the community’s diversity and talent. Here’s what you can expect to see and do:

The Entertainment Quarter | Join us in the Fahl Garden where students will be showcasing their musical and dance talents throughout the day. Special guest Jamie from ‘Jam on Toast’ will entertain our littlest kids from 10am.

Thank you to our dedicated and passionate volunteers who continue to put their hand up in support of the Autumn Fair. Further details on the Autumn Fair and how you can help on the day can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of other parent and carer events that continue to connect our community.

It’s always a pleasure to celebrate the exceptional achievements of our alumni, and this week Redlanders from different eras are in the spotlight. Celebrating Exceptional Redlanders

Yesterday we celebrated International Women’s Day which provided the opportunity for reflection on equity between genders. Education plays a vital role in equipping students with the relevant skills to succeed in life beyond school gates. At Redlands, our students especially benefit from learning in a coeducational school, where their academic learning is complemented by developing life ready skills in collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity.

At Redlands, our students also benefit from a long, rich history of persevering and inspired educators. From the visionary founding co-Principals Misses Elizabeth Liggins and Clara Arnold in 1884; to Miss G A Roseby, capably steering the School through the Spanish Flu, Great Depression, and two world wars; to the almost 30-year post-war tenure of Isobel Humphery. These women created foundations benefiting many Redlanders.

Legacy of
Alison Hattersley, Redlander 1926

A sporting legend and Redlands secret weapon in interschool sports, Alison Hattersley maintained an “unbroken association” of more than 80 years with her alma mater, from her time as a student (1917-26) through to the very end of her life, aged 91. Even in 1997, it was reported that Alison, then 88, was taking an active role in Redlands life and “still a member of the Redlanders Committee, only missing meetings when she is overseas from time to time.”

Alison also excelled academically, achieving Dux in her final year, and the Herald reports that the 1926 Redlands Speech Day Redlands was almost a “one girl event” with Alison’s name appearing in top place on nearly every list. Alison’s positive experiences at Redlands were the basis for a lifelong devotion to the School and an enduring relationship with Principal Miss Roseby, whom she held in high esteem and her on Sunday afternoons on her way home from visiting her own aunt.

Her many connections inspired Alison to make a generous bequest to the School, which was realised on her passing in 2000. This gift of $500,000 made a significant contribution to the renovation of the Junior School Campus in early 2000.

Inspiration from Dr Jennifer Butler, Redlander 1975

We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of Dr Jennifer Butler (Redlander 1975), which have included serving as Director & Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the Pacific Multi Country Office, Deputy Director for the Asia and Pacific region, and as a Commonwealth AIDS Post-Doctoral Research Fellow.

Dr Butler’s passion for social justice and the promotion and protection of human rights and gender equality led to a career focused on people and communities who experience social exclusion, spanning rural and remote areas, indigenous and minority communities, and people living with and affected by HIV.

Dr Butler was the Global Coordinator on ICPD25 and UNFPA@50 directing the watershed Nairobi Summit on ICPD25: Accelerating the Promise, which reinvigorated the global march to achieve sexual reproductive health rights and choices for all.

Jennifer reflected on her time at Redlands as a place where girls were encouraged to be independent thinkers, to discuss ideas and to use their education and opportunities to build social and human capital. She is grateful to the wonderful women teachers who inspired a life-long love of learning and public service.

#EmbraceEquity

On Wednesday March 8, students and staff participated in a range of events at school and away. A fantastic assembly led by Yr 12 student leaders enabled Yr 10 to 12 students to hear from a mixed gendered panel who shared stories of the strong women in their lives and how to overcome barriers and enable agency and autonomy. From IWD breakfasts to female and mixed gendered panels, Redlands students across Yr 7 to 12 had the opportunity to be inspired in a number of ways, such as the Women in Sport Panel which was held in Redlands Hall during lunch on Wednesday, where a number of past and present female athletes gathered to share their experiences and respond to questions. Head fo Sport (Acting) Mr Cam Ellis was approached by Grace Durrant (Yr 11) to offer students the opportunity to hear about the challenges faced by women in sport today. The panel members consisted of:

Renae Garlepp (Camino) – current Redlands Director of Coaching: Basketball. Renae has a strong history in Basketball with a long career in the WNBL. She battled through a number of injuries and is currently regarded as one of the great up and coming female coaches.

Jemma Donoghue – Redlander (2018) Jemma is the current 1st VII Netball coach and also a Training partner with the GWS Giants Netball team. Jemma made her Suncorp Super Netball debut in 2022, and was also named in the Australian U21 Netball team last year.

Tatum Bird – NSW Waratahs – Tatum is one of the first 30 women contracted to Rugby Australia. Tatum has played across the world in her short rugby career representing Australia & NSW at Junior 7s levels.

Suzy Walsham – Suzy is an accomplished athlete who represented Australia at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Suzy still currently holds the U18 & U20 1500m Records, and more recently has been competing in the Towerrunning World Championships.

Wellbeing Support Session for Parents

Tuesday night saw our inaugural Secondary School Student Wellbeing Support Session for parents and carers in Yr 7 and 8. The evening was well attended with over 75 people, who listened, laughed, shared stories and asked questions. The full presentation can be found at Your Relationship With Your Teen and Understanding Their Development. Stay tuned for our next Session scheduled for Term 2.

Study Schedules and Independent Home-Learning

Many of you made contact to ask for clearer versions of the Study Schedules published in last week’s Note Day. Please access the original and deidentified examples of Study Schedules as well as some Skeleton Schedules here. You should be able to view and then copy to your own drive, which will then enable you to edit with your own teenager. Please don’t do it for them. We are really encouraging students to have a detailed Study Schedule this year, but it’s definitely something we need to do with them, in a collaborative fashion, as a significant part of success is understanding the process of how to make and effectively use a Study Schedule. Also included in this folder of schedules is a Best Practice Read Me First! support document and another document which provides information on Independent Learning How To! which outlines the ideal time students should engage independently learning and top study tips for moving from surface to deep learning.

As we move through the first assessment season for the year, it is essential that students have backward mapped all assessment tasks and identified when they will ‘work’ or ‘focus’ on unpacking, understanding and completing these assessments. Students have one important job – to be a student. If your teenager is aimless, procrastinating, engaged in activities which are not healthy or purposeful, then please keep them busy! Support them to schedule their life – build in reward, affirmation and reflection. Self-discipline, self-management and self-efficacy are essential to personal excellence. We have seen some extremely positive examples of students gaining confidence and motivation via the use of a Study Schedule. You can direct your teenager to their Year Advisor, or Dean of Studies (7-10), Dean of HSC or Dean of IB, who are all eager to support. Or reach out yourself, and we can facilitate a check-in with your teen during the school day.

Sport Success

Getting through to the Finals is an achievement. Getting through to the Semis is also an achievement. Sometimes, just getting to the end of a match is an achievement. As we move towards the end of the Summer Sport season, our teens have excelled in their capacity to work together, demonstrate self-discipline and be resilient in their sporting endeavours. We look forward to the final games over the coming days.

Tomorrow (Friday) our CIS Cup Girls Football squad will be travelling to Pymble Ladies College for Round 1 of the CIS Cup. This knockout competition is a great experience for the girls in the lead up to the ISA Football season.

On Saturday we will see the Finals of the ISA Summer competition with a number of teams competing in both Basketball and Touch Football. The 1st Girls Touch Football will take on Kinross Wolaroi School at 12:45pm at Macquarie University Sporting Fields, this is the first time the Redlands 1sts have been in the Final. The 1st V Girls Basketball will be playing Barker College 1 at Penrith Valley Basketball Centre at 10:20am on Saturday morning. This team is pursuing their 4th straight ISA Division 1 Championship which is a huge testament to the Basketball program. Special mention must go to Kate Seebohm (Basketball Administrator & 1st V Coach) as well as Renae Camino (Director of Coaching: Basketball) for all of their efforts in creating such a great program and supporting the players to excel.

RULER Your Emotions

Last week a group of Redlands staff successfully completed an online RULER course through Yale’s Centre for Emotional Intelligence, led by Marc Brackett. The RULER team was made up of me, Deputy Principal, Ms Sabine Partington, Head of Prep School, Ms Ainlsie Breckenridge, Head of Junior School, Mr Ari Guha and our Deans of Students Ms Katie-Louise Clinton and Ms Marita Jansons.

“Emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action.”                            Salovey & Mayer, 1990

Emotional intelligence is about what we do with our emotions. It provides a framework for harnessing the power of emotions, as well as enhancing our attitudes and mindset about the role that emotions play in our lives, what we can learn from our emotions, and our ability to attend to and manage emotions.

Emotional intelligence consists of five skills, which we refer to as the RULER skills.

Together we have worked on learning the strategies to activate the RULER method at Redlands. Over the coming weeks, I look forward to sharing some of our learnings with you, and communicating how we intend to activate this valuable strategy at Redlands.

International Women’s Day

This week at our Yr 10-12 Assembly, Trinity Hoffman, Sebastian Tang and Ms El Martin spoke on a panel to respond to questions given by Josie Simpson and Maya Little relating to International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Below is a summary of the powerful responses to the questions Trinity, Sebastian and Ms Martin were given.

Trinity was asked “Who are strong advocates for women in your life, who inspire you and are role models of equality?” In response to this question, Trinity spoke beautifully about the inspiration she takes from women who fight for gender equality in contexts much less fortunate than ours. Trinity gave the example of women from developing countries, for whom the gender gap across a range of metrics is often very significant. This inequality has a big impact on their safety, security and wellbeing.

Sebastian Tang was asked “What would you change about the assumptions made about gender equality? What are some ways you would encourage people to get involved with IWD and aim for a gender-equal world?” In response to this question, Sebastian spoke powerfully about the values he saw modelled in his family when he was growing up and how gender equality is a fundamental right that benefits everyone in the community.

Ms El Martin was asked “What are the most effective ways to counteract the negative stereotypes of feminism, particularly in schools? ” In response to this question, Ms Martin spoke about the negative stereotypes of feminism and how reductive they can be. She also talked about strategies to counteract these in schools, and she suggested that coeducation has a powerful role in shaping young minds who will strive to achieve gender equality in the future. Schools can educate to broaden the definition of what a feminist is, by calling on students of all genders to take up the cause, and have open and direct conversations that explode the myths and stereotypes of feminism. She also challenged all members of our community to call out damaging language and behaviours that may subtly feed into stereotypes. Ms Martin finished by celebrating Redlands as a place in which female achievement and role models are celebrated, such as naming the Redlands Learning Hub floors after our remarkable female alumni.

World Pride and the GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance)

Ash Mitchell, leader of the GSA, spoke to Yr 10-12 about last week’s International Pride Week and the GSA. Ash and many others from the GSA, dressed up in rainbow colours and attended the World Pride March Walk across the Harbour Bridge on Sunday to support the LGBTQ+ Community and acknowledge/celebrate Australia’s queer history.

The GSA meets every fortnight and is open to all members of the Redlands community. In their recent meeting, the group brainstormed ways to make Redlands a more fun, inclusive and tolerant place.

International Women’s Day

This week, Redlands celebrates International Women’s Day, feminism and equality for all. On Tuesday, a combination of staff, Yr 11 and Yr 12 students shared their insights and experiences through a Student-led Assembly. Students were also given the opportunity to attend a Redlands Sport Q&A in Redlands Hall during lunch on Wednesday with a number of past and present female athletes, including: Director of Coaching (Basketball) Renae Garlepp, Redlands Coach Jemma Donoghue, NSW Waratahs Rugby player Tatum Bird, Australia Commonwealth Games 2006 representative  and current Towerrunning World Championships competitor Suzy Walsham and NRLW Newcastle Knights Five-Eight Rugby League player Kirra Dibb.

This Friday, the Yr 11 students will be dedicating the cohort assembly to International Women’s Day. We will hear from a group of students and Yr 11 Tutors regarding female role models in their lives, their understanding of feminism and what we can do as a cohort to support equality for all.

Photos and a summary of messages shared at the year meeting tomorrow will be included in next week’s Note Day. Thank you to the students who jumped in to this opportunity and for continuing the discussion on embracing equality: Grace Durrant, Daisy Thomas, Max Stepniak, Hugo Scott, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Apoorv Pilani, Kane Thompson, Hallie Hunt, Scarlett Thorp, Ashley Stapleton and Celine Patel.

Annie was their first choice to be showcased as she has dedicated 4 hours per week outside of class time since the start of Yr 7. You can often find Annie in the Art rooms after school, during lunch and sometimes before school as she works on her own pieces while continuing to develop of her skills in painting and life drawing. Annie is creative, always willing to learn and humble. To view her work, it is currently displayed on Level 1 of the Redlands Learning Hub. Congratulations to Annie!

International Women’s Day

For International Women’s Day and beyond, let’s all fully #EmbraceEquity.

This week, the Sports Department hosted a Redlands Sport Q&A with a number of past and present female athletes in conjunction with International Women’s Day.

The theme this year is ‘embracing equity’ and inspired Grace Durrant (Yr 11) to do something for the students which highlighted the challenges still faced by women in sport today, Mr Ellis and his team delivered a wonderful event.

The panel members:

  • Renae Garlepp (Camino) – current Redlands Director of Coaching: Basketball. Renae has a rich history in Basketball with a long career in the WNBL, she has battled through a number of injuries and is currently regarded as one of the great up and coming female coaches.
  • Jemma Donoghue – Redlander (2018) Jemma is the current 1st VII Netball coach, whilst also being a Training partner with the GWS Giants Netball team. Jemma made her Suncorp Super Netball debut in 2022, and was also named in the Australian U21 Netball team last year.
  • Tatum Bird – NSW Waratahs – Tate is one of the first 30 women contracted to Rugby Australia. Tatum has played across the world in her short rugby career representing Australia & NSW at Junior 7s levels.

Week 6 – Burning Bright as Assessments Begin

Students have really enjoyed testing out a sport in this term’s summer sport season. Some students have been involved in competition teams, including Basketball, Tennis and Touch Football, while others have engaged in the Thursday afternoon Non-Rep Sports program, including Rock Climbing, Futsal, Surfing and more. For some, they have attempted brand new sports, while others have honed their skills in a favourite pastime.

I was fortunate enough to visit our Yr 7 Girls Basketball team as they played against Blue Mountains Grammar and Barker in a double match last weekend. The girls played with excellent spirit, teamwork and skill, winning both matches and ending the season undefeated. Well done!

I look forward to getting out to see more students playing on future weekends in the upcoming winter season. Training for winter sports will commence for all students in Week 7.

Meanwhile, our Peer Support program is progressing along successfully with Yr 7 really enjoying the activities run by our Peer Support leaders. Last Friday, students were taken through a range of fun games designed to build their confidence and connections within their Tutor groups. There were lots of smiles and laughter during the games, and some thoughtful advice from Yr 11 who shared their insights on how to make the most out of their first term at Redlands.

On Monday, Burn Bright also came in to speak to students, to share with them strategies for making new friends and getting involved in the social life and activities of high school. Students were treated to a morning of fun games and strong life learning, coming away with important messages to:

  • Be friendly
  • Have courage
  • Know what is their ultimate friend
  • Include others and look out for others

Week 6 also had some academic flavour for Yr 7. Mrs Rolon, Dean of Academic Studies (Yrs 7-10), visited the cohort during Tuesday’s Tutor time to give them advice on how to develop effective study habits for assessment tasks. She demonstrated how students could create well-balanced study timetables and she offered students some really thoughtful advice, including to:

  • use a term planner or weekly planner to plot their assessments and key life events
  • display their planner at home
  • schedule strict time limits for devices and gaming
  • get into the habit of putting their phone on do not disturb when they are working

The strategies discussed and advice offered will be revisited in Tutor time sessions later this week.

Many students also sat their first assessment task this week, completing their Christian Studies assignment. Students also have an English assessment due on Thursday of next week, and have been working hard towards planning this in their lessons.

A reminder that a schedule of all assessment tasks for each subject and assessment notifications can be found on the Yr 7 Core Page on iLearn by visiting this link.

NSW School Vaccination Program 2023

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The following vaccines are offered free to Yr 7 students at school on Wednesday 5 April.

  • Yr 7 – diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV)

Students who miss this clinic date will be offered a catch-up opportunity on Thursday 25 May.

From February 2023, children in Yr 7 will now only need one dose of HPV vaccination. This change has been endorsed by ATAGI based on evidence showing that one dose provides the same level of protection against HPV as two doses.

Vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received.  To provide consent for vaccination online, you will need:

Benefits of online consent for parents/carers:

  • SMS notifications when vaccinations are given
  • easy updating of your child’s details online
  • faster upload of your child’s vaccination records to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper-based consent form directly from the Year Advisor.

To help answer questions you may have regarding providing vaccination and online consent, please visit the NSW Health website here.

International Women’s Day

This week, I share my respect and appreciation to all of our female staff and students as we acknowledge International Women’s Day and the significant impact and influence they, and others before you them, have had on our Redlands community right from its foundation in 1884, when the School was founded by Miss Arnold and Miss Liggins.

This year’s theme of #embraceequity was front and centre in our assembly and we were delighted to have Deputy Principal, Ms Partington, speak to students and staff about her own experiences growing up and in her first career in banking related to this theme.

As well as sharing some alarming inequitable statistics, Ms Partington also talked about the difference between equality and equity to the students.

As we work towards a world free of stereotypes and discrimination that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, where difference is valued and celebrated, I know that one of our true strengths as a school is our diversity in every sense of the word and we all value the strong, diverse, talented and compassionate women here at Redlands.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not recommended and our students have been appropriately prepared for the types of questions that they might face and guidance on how best to manage their time in a timed situation. Students can use the public demonstration site to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in NAPLAN.

As parents, some of the ways you can support your child include ensuring that your child has a good night’s sleep before each day and a good breakfast each morning. If your child is showing signs of anxiety, do try to reassure them but also let their class teacher know too.

Athletics Carnival – Return Time Update

We are looking forward to our Junior School Athletics Carnival next Thursday 16 March out at Homebush, which promises to be another whole of Junior School event filled with House spirit and enjoyment.

Please note that our intended finish time has been brought forward to approximately 1pm with presentations at this time. We expect to be on buses by 1.30pm and back at school by 2.15pm to allow all of the buses to be available for Secondary School sport at 2.30pm.

Parents can sign students out and take them home from the track at 1.30pm if they wish to and all students who come back to school will be with teachers until the normal end of the school day.

Car line will operate as normal on Thursday as will scheduled after school clubs and activities on this day.

Student Recognition – Kids Giving Back

I was proud to receive an email from Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of our Junior School students and their families spent time volunteering over the summer holidays to help others through this organisation.

Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create the next generation of generosity through meaningful, hands-on experiences for young people to give back to others. Through charity partners, they arrange opportunities for children aged 6-18 years old and their families to help and support for people experiencing food scarcity or hardship.

Our students were among 980 young people who assisted in providing over 12,500 hot and cold meals, breakfast boxes, snack packs, care packs, writing empathetic, positive messages to 13 charities around Sydney.

These students demonstrated leadership qualities, compassion, and a strong sense of civic responsibility. To hear of our Redlands students embracing the concept of contributing back into the community is heart-warming and a wonderful example of our students living our School Values whilst making a difference to the lives of others.

I will duly acknowledge these students in our next assembly but I wanted to also do so through this wider community communication as well. Thank you to the following students who participated in one or more of the programs during the summer break:

Charlie Elworthy (Yr 3), Oliver Elworthy (Yr 6), Ripley Jackson (Yr 4), Zoe Stevens (Yr 3), Leo Stevens (Yr 5), Freya Stevens (Yr 7), Hayden Thomas (Yr 6)

HICES Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to our Junior School Swimming team as they competed in this year’s HICES Swimming Carnival. We are very proud of the team’s efforts to come 2nd Overall with a number of personal bests achieved and a plethora of podium finishes for our Redlands swimmers. It was also great to see many parents there to support the team and from this, many of our swimmers have been selected in the HICES swimming team to compete at the next level; the NSWCIS Swimming Carnival.

Student Health Matters

To continue to help protect our community, each student will be given a box of 5 Rapid Antigen Test kits this week. We encourage the use of these kits and most importantly, please remember to keep your child at home if they are unwell, regardless of the test result, as this only spreads illness in classes.

Digital Literacy and Student Agency

At our Prep Parent Technology Workshop this week, parents took part in a hands-on workshop where our Yr 6 Student Technology Leaders and a group of Yr 2 students were the teachers.  Aven Briscoe, Henry Hughes, Fiona Russell, Demi Yazbek, Ekam Sethi, Hayden Thomas, Alexia Tsacalos and Enrico Viese Vivaldi confidently guided parents through iPad activities to experience how students use technology as a tool for learning in the classroom to build their digital literacy skills. The highlight was our Yr 2 students Betty Campbell, Madison Ho, Nicholas Ma and Thor Kazimierczuk who demonstrated their digital expertise, walking parents through how our prep students digitally organise, create, communicate and share their learning through Seesaw. Thank you to our eLearning Coordinator Ms Anagnostu who organised this workshop and provided this opportunity for our students to exercise student agency and share their skills.

The Wonders of Life Cycles in Yr 1

Mrs Partington and I were privileged to be in 1Blue and 1Red this morning to watch the beauty of a butterfly emerge from the cocoon. It was truly a magic moment to not only witness nature at its best but also to observe the student reactions, truly magical.

No better way to share this than to have 1 Blue share the experience:

On Thursday, our first orange Monarch butterfly hatched from its chrysalis. When the caterpillars became big enough, they spun some silk to attach to the top of their habitat and shed their skin to turn into a chrysalis. The chrysalis was green but when this one was ready to hatch it became dark brown and then clear. The chrysalis went ‘pop’ and out came a beautiful butterfly! When it first hatched it was small and the wings were wet. We watched it excitedly as it grew bigger, and the wings became drier. We named our butterfly Felix.

K-6 Vacation Care

A message from Ana Nogueira, OOSH Coordinator

The upcoming Vacation Care program is open for bookings and there are certainly a wide range of activities to choose from.

We would also like to invite families to join us on the 19 April for our Cultural Festival. If you would like to come in and share with the other children and educators about your family’s background, we would LOVE to hear from you. This can be done with pictures from your home-country, typical clothes, or a cooking experience that we can facilitate with your guidance!

Drop off Information

It is wonderful to have parents and carers in our playground each morning, a precious time to connect and catch up. Parents are reminded to please exit the campus when the bell goes to help the transitioning of our students into their day. A final wave or a quick peek through the windows is tempting, but this can disrupt the morning routine.

A gentle reminder that if families do arrive after the bell, please say goodbye to your child or leave the property you are dropping off in the Reception area. Mrs Hunt or Mrs Alfonso will walk your child to their room or take the property to rooms. This again will reduce disruption and allow for smooth transitioning throughout the day.

Thank you to the parents who attended our Volunteer Information Session this week. Below you will find a schedule for each grade that highlights the specific times that they would like assistance. If there is a time that suits you, please email your teacher directly.

International Day is one of the most important days here at Redlands. We are a school of many nationalities and cultures so let’s celebrate that this year without any restrictions.

This year we would like to ask you, our international community to help us organise a wonderful day full of activities, food, talks, music, and any other fun activities that you would like to share.

If you are a parent who identifies with another culture, we would love you to join us on 4 April between 9am and 10am to share aspects of your culture with us. Please email me directly or catch me in the hallway to let me know if you are interested in coming along.

Secondary Sport

What a week it has been in Sport. Yesterday we were privileged to host an International Women’s Day – Women in Sport Q&A in Redlands Hall, this was a fantastic opportunity for the students of Redlands to ask a number of past, present and future athletes what it has been like to compete at the highest level. A huge thank you to Renae Camino, Suzy Walsham, Jemma Donoghue and Tatum Bird who took time out of their day to answer the students’ questions and for Grace Durrant (Yr 11) who put together some insightful questions.

It has been great to see so many teams making ISA Semi Finals last week, with some really close results. This week is the ISA Finals weekend with a number of exciting prospects this weekend. I will make special mentions to the Girls 1st V Basketball & 1st VI Touch Football teams, both teams have had incredible season, with the Basketball Girls going through their season undefeated, and the Touch Football Girls having an incredible last few weeks, knocking off Barker College 1 for the first time in seven years. Both these teams are coached by some incredible coaches in Kate Seebohm (Basketball) and Jordy Parsonage (Touch Football).  As a school, we are incredibly fortunate to have both Kate and Jordy on our coaching staff, both women are amazing role models for their respective programs.

Best of luck to all teams competing this weekend, we are encouraging all students from their respective programs to get out and support their teams. When doing so students need to be in full school uniform or full Redlands sports uniform.

Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.

Basketball

It was fantastic to see all of our teams competing on Saturday in the semi-finals at Penrith Basketball Stadium. With nine teams playing in the semi-finals, it was a massive day for Redlands Basketball. We had four teams win on the day, with a lot of close contests. It was very pleasing to see the consistent effort in all games from the Redlands teams, with all teams competing until the final buzzer. Congratulations and best of luck to the following teams who are playing in a final this Saturday at Penrith Basketball Stadium: 1st Girls, Inter A Girls, Inter B Girls, Junior B Girls, Junior C Girls, 15B Boys, 15C Boys, 15D Boys, 14B boys, 14D Boys and 13C Boys. A huge achievement to have 11 teams through to the Finals on Saturday.

Last weekend saw the entire Rowing program attend the ACT Junior Championships on Saturday 4 March and the ACT Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday 5 March. The Redlands rowers and coxes represented themselves very well, with rowers winning 29 team medals  – a combined 118 individual medals across the weekend, almost one medal per student.

This particular weekend is a significant highlight for the Rowing program with around 130 students from Year 8-12 departing during the day on Friday and some outstanding parent support with the parents organising three different dinner bookings for well over 150 people on Saturday night.

On the Saturday at the ACT Junior Championships many of our students had multiple racing opportunities across a range of boats with significant results including the following:

Sailing

This will be the last week for most of our sailors except, for those that are competing in the NSW State Championships, it’s been a short and busy term but thank you to all the students and parents for the help and enjoyment that has been brought to the program. This week for Redlands Sailing the students in the Elliotts were able to practice their slow boat control and were being introduced to spinnakers doing windward and leeward courses managing to set jibe and drop the spinnakers within a set distance. The pacers now having the teams racing competition approaching rapidly are focusing on the tactics of teams racing and boat handling.

I want to congratulate those that have been selected for the initial squad for the NSW Teams Racing Championships next week at Woollahra Sailing Club, Rose Bay. There will be more details coming out shortly to the squad.

Tennis

We would like to commend our Summer Tennis players for a great competition season so far! This will be the last round before NSTA finals, and we are proud to see so many players improving their match play and technique for singles and doubles. Please remember that Development Squad and competition players will still have a Saturday commitment in Week 7 Sat 18 March (Redlands Autumn Fair) so if you are not able to make this fixture, please let Ms Caitlin Wong know ASAP. A further reminder that TNB players will continue to play on Saturday until the end of the term.

This is the final week of training, so we encourage students to make use of the additional Friday session to make up for missed sessions and get in more practice for the upcoming Winter Tennis season. We hope to see you in Winter Tennis, if not the next Summer Tennis season!

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis or the upcoming Winter Tennis season.

Touch Football

Semi finals played across Blue Mountains and Macquarie Uni resulted in success across our Junior A Boys and Senior 1sts Girls, with both teams progressing into the Grand Finals on the back of strong performances. A special mention to the Junior A Girls and Senior 1st Boys who both bowed out over the weekend with hard fought losses.

Our Senior 3 Boys have had the week off finishing the regular season top of the table, automatically qualifying for the Grand Final. The Boys head into the final on fresh legs, hoping to finish off a dominant season with a win.

We encourage the wider school community to get down to Macquarie Uni and support the Grand Finals fixtures this weekend.

Finals Saturday 11 March at Macquarie Uni Fields

  • 9:00am: Senior 3 Boys V Oakhill.
  • 10:15am: Jnr Boys V Augies
  • 12:45pm: Senior 1st Girls v Kinross

See you Saturday!

Keep an eye out on Kayo Live stream later this week to see some familiar faces playing at Touch Football Australis, National Touch Football competition. Junior As coaches Josh and Keaton are both playing in the Men’s Open division. We are lucky to have such high-quality coaches supporting the growth of Touch Football at Redlands!

Goodluck to all!

HICES Football Selection

In a revised trial format we were able to take a Football team out to the HICES Football Gala Day at St Paul’s Grammar in Cranebrook. After five rounds of competition where Redlands did not have a goal scored against them, we went into a possible and probable format. From that the HICES team was announced. Congratulations to Mark Rolfe, Owen Beck and Louis Dobson who were selected in the 2023 HICES team that will compete at the CIS championships next term.

Snowsports

Welcome to another incredible action-packed Snowsports season, and a special welcome to those who are joining our vibrant community on the slopes for the first time!

Redlands has been involved in competitive Snowsports for many years and has won numerous awards at the national level for individual events and as a school. We are committed to preparing our students to ride and ski safely and competently to enjoy this wonderful lifelong family sport.

To race, students need to confidently ski or snowboard on blue runs. The on-snow program commences with the start of the July school holiday, and if your child is keen to compete, they can enter the Redlands Cup, followed by the Sydney Interschools Championships. There are a wide variety of Ski and Snowboard events, with Redlands offering specialist training (Kindergarten-12) for participants through our partnership with Thredbo.

We are always on the lookout for parent volunteers to assist with various aspects of the on-snow events, particularly at Redlands Cup and Interschools. If you are interested in supporting the Friends of Snowsports, get in touch with Chairperson Nicky Wessels (details on the Redlands Pulse Community Page) or register interest through Snowsports registrations when they open.

When they become available, Redlands can offer Thredbo Premium Season Passes for students at an exclusive rate (2023 cost TBC), as well as group lessons when students are on our Programs.

Students attending Winter School will have the Season Pass included in their fees and do not need to purchase one through the Snowsports Registrations. All other students participating in Redlands Snowsport Programs are encouraged to purchase the Season Pass through us to take advantage of exclusive price.

Further details on registrations for all events will be available via Redlands Pulse in the coming weeks, but for now here is an overview of the key dates along with a few more details.

Redlands Drama is excited to present the 2023 Secondary School Theatresports Competition!

Theatresports challenges performers to create instant theatre through set games based entirely on improvisation. The result is a spontaneous, team-based performance which promotes a highly supportive environment, that’s also a lot of fun!  The energetic and unpredictable style of Theatresports is judged on three different criteria:  Technique, Narrative, and Entertainment and all of this performed to a time limit.

It’s going to be a high energy, highly entertaining night of wacky characters in sticky situations. We’d also like to welcome the Year 7 students who will be joining our competition for the first time. We hope you can join us for the Theatresports Competition Performance evening.

Sport for Jove – Shakespeare Workshops

Our Curriculum Drama Classes have just finished their specialised workshops with Sport for Jove. They had such a fantastic time and we’re looking forward to seeing their finished performances.

“I thought Sport for Jove was an informative but truly enjoyable experience. Owen taught us the importance of tension levels in a scene through interactive activities and challenged us as actors to take on different objectives within a scene to prove the significance of understanding our characters and their connections with other characters within the scene. Overall, Sport for Jove included fun games and scene work that helped us understand how to act Shakespeare in a genuine sense, connecting with the language of iambic pentameter and proving how it supports a character’s state and overall performance”.  Millie Winton – 10 Drama 1.

Music

Rehearsals are in full flight for performances at the Redlands Autumn Fair and our epic annual showdown Battle of the Bands. We were overwhelmed by great audition submissions for the competition last week, and are thrilled to announce the finalists and our guest judge below! See the link to book your tickets!

If planning your day at the Autumn Fair, be sure to pop the Fahl Garden on your itinerary between 1.00 – 2.30pm to be serenaded by our Junior and Senior Jazz Ensembles who have a great program lined up for you.

Next week I’m looking forward to spending time with members of our Prep School community in the Prep Music Orientation session on Thursday Morning.  Many families of younger students are wondering what exciting opportunities lie ahead in their Redlands journey, and may even have practical questions around the right time to start learning an instrument and how caregivers might offer support to music learning at home. I look forward to unpacking these things in our session alongside Ms Katherine Moses, our Head of Junior Campus Music.

Wishing you a lovely week to come!

Amy Richardson
Director of Music P-12

Red Factor 2023

There’s just Yr 3 to go in our lunchtime audition series tomorrow, and we can’t wait to let you know who our variety acts will be for 2023 in Note Day next week! (Families will also be emailed by the end of Week 7).

Not a competition and far more than just a concert – this crowd-pleasing end of term extravaganza is in every way the quintessential Variety Show!  We can’t wait to see all these student-produced acts shine!

Current Auditions

Senior Music Festival Features

We are excited to announce auditions for the first round of selected featured roles within ensemble performances at this year’s Senior Music Festival to be held at The Concourse on 16 June.
The following auditions are open NOW:

  • Redlands Festival Orchestra (select Woodwind, Brass & Percussion solo roles)
  • Featured Drummer (with Advanced Strings)
  • Featured Guitarist (with Advanced Choir)

Please check the Music Department Auditions iLearn page for more information.

Senior Instrumental Competition

A reminder that the Senior Instrumental Competition auditions are now open via iLearn – closing on Friday 24 March at 5pm. A fantastic chance for instrumentalists to gain performance experience in front of an experienced adjudicator, this evening is a highlight of the Redlands Competition series.
