Issue 6 2020 - 05 Mar 2020

From the Principal

As Preparatory and Redlands House parents were advised earlier this week, I am delighted to announce that Mrs Ainslie Breckenridge has been appointed as the new Head of Preparatory School and will commence in the role at the start of Term 2.

Ainslie has a great passion for Early Childhood education and is currently the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator in the Junior School at Barker College. She previously held the position of Head of Junior School at PLC in Armidale and taught at Trinity Grammar Preparatory School.

Ainslie is looking forward to building on the wonderful work and dedicated leadership of Audrey Fellowes who will be finishing at Redlands at the end of March. I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Audrey for her significant service to the School and wish her every success as she embarks on her new role as Head of Primary (P-6) at Clayfield College in Queensland. For the last weeks of term after Audrey’s departure, Ari Guha will be Acting Head of Junior Campus.

I know that our community with provide Ainslie with a very warm Redlands welcome when she commences next term.

I attended a regional Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA) NSW/ACT branch meeting over the weekend and on Monday at Port Macquarie and as you would expect, a key topic of conversation amongst the Heads was the current situation with the coronavirus and any further potential future impacts on our school communities. We are in regular communication with the Association of Independent Schools NSW and their CEO Dr Newcombe presented at the branch meeting.

As our community is aware, we took a conservative approach at the outset regarding students’ attendance at school following travel overseas, in order to ensure the wellbeing of our students and families and we have continued to strongly reinforce good hygiene practices throughout the School. We are closely monitoring advice from the NSW Health Department and will ensure we keep our community informed of any developments.

I am conscious that at this time of some heightened anxiety, it is important to reassure and openly communicate with children regarding the situation and to address any concerns or questions that they may have. Our students are incredibly connected to news and media around the world and the 24 hour cycle can become overwhelming. You can help them by seeking out accurate information, sharing it with them openly and reassuring them. Some points below from a recent New York Times article may be useful.

Fill in the Facts

Wendy Mogel, a clinical psychologist and the author of ‘Voice Lessons for Parents’, noted that the coronavirus has all the makings of a horror movie that will fascinate many older kids.

“The virus’s origin, the quick spread around the world, the allure of this novel disease is everywhere,” she said. “Turn off the news and really find out what your kids know about the virus.”

“Answer their questions, and if you don’t know the answer, be honest. You can research the answers together,” Dr Mogel said.

What Scientists Know about the Virus

Richard Bromfield, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School and the author of ‘How to Unspoil Your Child Fast,’ agreed. “Kids are exposed to so much information today that they marinate in it,” he said. “Manage what your kids see and hear, but have them share with you what they are exposed to so you can discuss it. Try to see it the way they see it, and help correct misinformation and put it in context.”

Make It a Team Effort

Dr Mogel suggested passing along the words one teenager recently used in talking about the virus to her: “She said people with stronger immune systems should take more responsibility to keep people with weaker immune systems well.”

She added, “It’s also a good opportunity for parents to reinforce what they have always told their kids: Get a good night’s sleep, get some sunshine, eat well and make sure you wash your hands.”

“Give teens the right information about how viruses are transmitted and put it in context,” suggested Heather Turgeon, a psychotherapist and co-author of ‘Now Say This: The Right Words to Solve Every Parenting Dilemma.’

“Explain that part of why we take certain precautions, like 20-second hand-washing before snacks and lunch, not sharing food and utensils and so forth, is that we’re protecting vulnerable people. It’s a community effort,” Ms Turgeon said.

As I finish writing this article, the rain is once again falling and this time over a much broader area of regional Australia, which is reason to pause and give thanks. This will no doubt be of great assistance to our farming regions who have been severely impacted by prolonged drought. It reminded me of the importance of stopping and even in the midst of very challenging times, finding the things we are thankful for and expressing gratitude.

Technology in the Secondary School

In the Secondary School, we are proud of our rich blended learning environment where technology is utilised as one of a number of important learning tools for students. Walking around the campus during any given period, one would see some classes extensively using technology to enhance the learning and other classes not using it at all. At Redlands our use and integration of contemporary technologies allow students greater opportunities to connect, personalise, create and organise their learning in rich and varied ways. This utilisation of technology not only enhances their learning opportunities while attending Redlands, but also helps to best prepare them for the world when they leave school where the need for the responsible and innovative use of technology is increasingly paramount. In surveys conducted earlier this year, our Yr 12 students have been overwhelmingly positive about the benefits of utilising technology with over 50% completely agreeing (giving a 10/10) in response to the statement, “Technology and the use of laptops have been beneficial to my learning”.

However, we are also cognisant that there are many challenges that technology can pose for students, in particular with the use and ownership of smart phones. Amongst other things, technology can lead to distractions for students and their learning both at home and at school, and we want to work in partnership with students and families to ensure we minimise the negative impacts of technology on students while enhancing its positive impacts for their learning. Accordingly, we have had been recently reviewing our responsible use of technology expectations with Year Advisors and Subject Coordinators and will be further reiterating these expectations and how they will be monitored both in and out of the classroom with all teachers and students in the coming weeks. We are also looking to have more parent forums later this year to focus on strategies to support families with the responsible use of technology at home. If you or your child has any concerns about the appropriate and responsible use of technology in or out of the classroom, please follow up with your relevant Tutor or Year Advisor.

Sports Update

The summer sports season is quickly coming to a close with many teams and crews competing in either finals series or final regattas. Last weekend the ISA Semi Finals for Girls Touch Football and Girls and Boys Basketball were held at Penrith. In Basketball, 13 of our teams have progressed through to the Finals this Saturday, including our Girls 1st V, Intermediate A and Junior A teams, and our Boys 1st V, 17A, 15A and 13A teams. We wish every one of our Basketball teams competing in the finals all the best this weekend and hope to have strong student support out at Penrith for our many teams throughout the day.

Many of our Girls Touch Football teams competed in their Semi Finals and Finals on the weekend against some strong competition. Congratulations to our Junior C team for winning their Semi Final against St Andrew’s before going down in the final against St Spyridon. While our GirlG 1st VI Touch Football team lost in the Semi Final against a very talented Barker team, they exemplified many of the values we hope to see in Redlands Sports in their match. On the pitch, they showed tremendous sportsmanship, effort and teamwork and had the Barker team on the back foot for long stretches of the first half. At the end of the game, their camaraderie shone through with lots of hugs, a few tears and many smiles as the Yr 12 players realised they had played their last match of Touch Football for the School. It has been wonderful to see Girls Touch Football grow over recent years and the departing Yr 12 players should be proud of not only their efforts on the field over the weekend, but also in their leadership in helping the sport to grow over the past few years.

Premiere’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge opened Monday 2 March for teachers, students and parents and concludes Friday 28 August. The PRC was instigated to encourage wide reading in schools. The student website is a place where students can record their reading, browse the booklists to earmark further reading and explore information about authors. For continuing students, the username and password remains the same. For new students each Library will apply for usernames and passwords and these will be disseminated in due course. Students who have completed the PRC at their previous school need to carefully link their new account in the opening questionnaire so that their previous reading counts towards future certificates. It is very special to receive Gold and Platinum Awards which are handed out by the Principal.

The Roseby Library is happy to support those students who wish to continue this challenge. We have a dedicated spinner for new PRC titles. For those students who have previously completed the PRC in the Arnold Library, the same username and password applies. New Secondary students please apply at the Roseby Library counter for a username and password.

Chaplain

Our Anglican tradition has extended to include some new traditions. The CRU (the Christian lunch time group) students worked with the Chaplain and Ms Shaw to produce pancakes on Tuesday 25 February. This was Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins. As Lent is a time of sombre reflection on the death of Christ and a focus on repentance and fasting, Shrove Tuesday was the day that people would use up the sweet ingredients before the fast. The CRU students reminded others that the free pancakes reminded them that God’s love and forgiveness, while costly to God, was free to all who wish to accept it. This Easter it is appropriate to reflect on the salvation that God offers to all at the cost of his beloved son, Jesus Christ.

The other tradition we have begun is including musicians and singers in Chapel. Monday lunchtime sees a variety of students preparing for the Chapel. This enables students who may like to play or sing for a few weeks, but not every week, to participate. This last Monday saw our largest contingent with representatives from almost every Year Group. This enables the students to have input not only on the songs but in the arrangement as well. I am particularly looking forward to the Yr 12 Chapel this week featuring drums and saxophone. My hope is that Chapel becomes a space not only where students spend time reflecting, praying and singing but contributing to shape that time together.

Debating

Debating Draws

FED

Congratulations to the Senior A, Senior B, Yr 10, Yr 8A, Yr 8B and Yr 7B teams for their wins against Monte last Friday.

This week we will be debating at home. Please meet Ms Alan, Ms Nocera and Ms Moore in the Liggins Quad at 3.30pm to sign in and to set up your Debating room.

All members of the team attend coaching. Team members who are not debating need to help teachers host the event. This includes chairing, keeping time and guiding visitors to their rooms.

The Chairperson and Timekeeper should also ensure that both teams are ready to start the debate and in the correct room. Visiting teams prep in the Debating room so this would involve fetching the Redlands team. You have been emailed the Chairperson’s sheets if you would like to practise before the day. I have emailed the rooms we will be using so that you are familiar with which rooms you will be using.

ISDA

Congratulations to the Senior B, Yr 9 and Primary A teams who all had wins against Ascham last Friday.

This week we will be Debating at Newington. Please meet Mr Ockenden at the Adams Centre at 3.30pm sharp. There will be no time to go to the shops. If you want to snack on something you will need to bring a light dinner from home. Most venues provide refreshments, but this is not usually served until later in the evening. A reminder that all students are required to be at each debate and coaching session of the season.

You will need to sign in with Mr Ockenden and then sign out before you leave to go home. Parents will need to make arrangements for students to travel home from the venue after their debate.

You have been emailed venue details. Please note their sustainability policy and bring a keep cup and/or water bottle to the venue.

Online HSC Minimum Standards Test

In 2016, the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) announced that all HSC students would be required to demonstrate a minimum standard of Literacy and Numeracy before they could be awarded the HSC. You have recently been sent a letter from Mr David Randall, Dean of Academic Studies, explaining this process. Mr Randall also addressed the Year Group in assembly this week to inform the students that they will have an opportunity to do online practice tests starting next Friday and will sit the actual tests during the Yr 10 Examination block in Term 2. Although passing these tests is not a requirement of the IB, Redlands will be requiring all Yr 10 students to take them, regardless of whether they intend to select the HSC or IB for next year. Any questions, please direct them to drandall@redlands.nsw.edu.au. More information can be found here.

Student Achievements

Ella Delaney was one of 16 sailors selected for the SailGP Inspire Program this past week. As part of this program she was trained to sail RS Cat 14 racing catamarans on Sydney Harbour on the same course as the F50 super Cats. Winning most of their practice races and attaining three 1st places over six races during the point score, Ella and her sailing partner from another school achieved 2nd place overall at the end of the series, missing out on the Sydney Series Championship by just one point. What an amazing achievement for Ella!

Top Tips for Memorising Notes

Many students find it really difficult to cope with the memorisation that can be needed for tests and exams. Of course, you can’t just rote learn and regurgitate, you need to be able to apply the skills of what you have learnt. However, there is also a certain amount of memorisation of content, formulas and definitions for example that will be necessary. So how can students make this process easier?

  • Make your notes as brain-friendly as possible, point form, tables, diagrams and no big long sentences or paragraphs.
  • Start the memorisation process of your notes early, don’t wait until just before the test or examination.
  • Memorisation involves testing yourself over and over and over. So read a section, then see what you can say or write down without looking. Then go back and see what you got wrong or didn’t know. Put a pencil mark next to these bits.
  • Now focus on the bits you didn’t know. Say them out loud, repeat them to yourself, write them down a few times.
  • Then test yourself on those bits again and see if you remembered more this time.
  • Do this over and over and over again. Then do it one more time again.
  • Make flashcards or use a flashcard App on your phone to create flashcards on the parts you find hard to remember. Review these every day before the test.
  • Make a list of the key concepts you find hard to learn and each night read through them just before you go to sleep and first thing when you wake up as these are powerful memory times.
  • Do lots of practice questions without looking at your notes or the answers to see if you can a) remember and b) apply the information. Review the things you did not remember again.
  • Your job is to keep testing yourself in order to find out which bits have not stuck in your memory yet so you can review these until they do.

Yr 8 Pastoral Program

This term, students will focus on developing their understanding of self-management and responsible decision making through setting clear goals, creating an evolving term planner to be added to and adapted throughout the term and by studying positive and negative risk-taking. Outcomes for this term include: understanding the connections between emotions and choices, identifying safe and unsafe risks, understanding how choices/impulses can impact personal wellbeing and resilience and an introduction to some of the consequences involved in these decisions.

This Friday begins our first of several Fridays throughout the year focused on Wellness and Mindfulness in Yr 8. After a few trial runs of these options last year, strong student and parent feedback has supported this time to be a regular occurrence in our Pastoral Program and a much needed part of our personal awareness and social development. Students have selected activities from meditation and yoga to organised court games, depending on what they feel is needed this week for their own balance.

Communication to Parents

May I ask that all parents re-read Mr Sean Corcoran’s Welcome Letter from the beginning of the year regarding ‘General Communication in the Secondary School’:

Clear lines of communication are central to developing the important triangular partnership between home, school and students, and Redlands prides itself in having open and supportive communication between School and home. While teachers may be available during the day to answer quick questions by phone, in many cases they will not be at their desks and it will be best to get a message to them by other means, specifically email. Any general enquiries can also be directed to Ms Vivienne Hoile (9968 9870) or Ms Susan Jones (9968 9811) through the Secondary School Office. Any urgent messages to be conveyed to staff or students during the school day should also be sent through the Secondary School Office. Most communication to staff will be via email and these can be sent with the standard email address format being the first name initial followed by the surname@redlands.nsw.edu.au, eg. scorcoran@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

In this era of instant communication, I would like clarify a few expectations around email communication:

  • We do value open communication between school and home and staff endeavour to respond as quickly as possible to emails.
  • However, teachers are not at their desks able to check emails for most of the day. Instead, they are out teaching, leading cocurricular activities, being Tutors, providing individual support for students, completing various duties, planning lessons, marking assignments or collaboratively sharing in a professional learning community with colleagues, just to name a few of their daily activities.
  • Therefore, please do not expect an instant reply and assume the email will be read by the end of the day. Staff do seek to reply as soon as possible and will be sure to reply within 48 hours.
  • More urgent matters that need a quicker reply should be sent through to the Secondary School Office.
  • Emails should remain respectful and courteous. Sometimes the tone of an email is not always clear given the brevity of language so it can be misinterpreted by the reader.

If the intended communication is related to a more complex matter or more time is required, it is best to arrange a face-to-face meeting to discuss the matter at a mutually convenient time for all concerned.

Please note, staff are not expected to answer emails in the evening or on weekends. It is important that they have this time for planning, preparation and personal time.

For any academic queries, please contact the class teacher initially, followed by the Subject Coordinator if needed, and then they can further direct the enquiry as required. For any pastoral or wellbeing queries, please contact the Tutor first, followed by the Year Advisor or Assistant Year Advisor if needed, and then they can direct the enquiry as required. A full list of Tutors can be found under the Secondary School section of Pulse.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Charlee Kwintner who has excelled in the performing arts. Charlee started the year performing in Puccini’s opera, La Boheme at the Sydney Opera House for Opera Australia. One of the highlights of this experience for Charlee was sharing the stage with her singing teacher from school, Kylie Carter. Charlee then went on to perform in the Packmen Production of Les Misérables at the Riverside Theatre as Young Cosette. This is a phenomenal achievement for such a young performer, and we wish her every success as she continues in her theatrical endeavours.

  • Do lots of practise questions without looking at your notes or the answers to see if you can a) remember and b) apply the information. Review the things you did not remember again.
  • Your job is to keep testing yourself in order to find out which bits have not stuck in your memory yet so you can review these until they do.

Yr 6 Camp (9-13 March)

Next week sees the first of our 2020 Junior School camps set off as Yr 6 head down to Canberra. The children and staff are excited about the week and I am looking forward to spending time with them too, just as I will visit every Year Group on their respective camps in the first semester. I will send parents an email update from Canberra to give you a sense of how the trip is faring and we will endeavour to put some photos up in the Yr 6 section of Redlands Pulse during the week. These special opportunities for teachers and students to observe and interact with one another in an environment outside of the classroom often builds a platform for developing increased connections upon returning to School, not to mention fostering potential new student friendships along the way. I am sure that the trip will provide some wonderful opportunities and memories for students and staff alike and I will share my observations and experiences through Note Day too.

Mosman Youth Awards in Literature Competition

The entries for the annual Mosman Youth Awards in Literature competition are now open. Since the competition was first held in 1993 as part of the Centenary of Mosman celebrations, over 9000 stories and pieces of poetry have been entered in the competition and Redlands students have had a long history of both participation and success in these awards.

The competition awards prizes for both prose and poetry and is open to primary and secondary students. As in previous years, entries are expected from across NSW as well as from local students. The annual contest is run by Mosman Library Service, with prizes sponsored by the Lions Club of Mosman, Rotary Club of Mosman, Northern Beaches and Mosman College and Oracle Books Mosman.

Entries close on Friday 31 May and the winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Wednesday 28 August at Barry O’Keefe Library. We have a few entry forms in the Library but these are also available online. Class teachers will also encourage students to be involved again in this literary opportunity.

Young Leaders Day

On Monday, our Junior School student leaders joined nearly 5,000 other primary school student leaders at this year’s Young Leaders Day. Held at the International Conference Centre in Darling Harbour, the students heard from a range of speakers and took part in sessions that gave them much to think about on their own respective leadership journeys. Yr 6 Coordinator, Mrs Robinson, spent the day with them and also thoroughly enjoyed the experience and getting to know the students further. Below are a few of the students’ reflections of the day.

The National Young Leaders Day was amazing and it was so much fun! All the speakers that came to talk to us were so good and very good role models. Their speeches were very inspirational and I loved the dance breaks because we got to learn new dances. The speakers taught me to always persist and achieve my dreams. I loved how there was a mix of different leaders. It was great how we got to meet students from different schools and share with them. It was a great experience and I hope to see the future captains doing this as well. Sophie

I had a very enjoyable time at the National Young Leaders Day which was held in an amazing conference room in Darling Harbour. Something that I definitely took back with me was that when taking a risk you should never think about what could go wrong but should think about what could go right and following your dreams to do what you love. A highlight from this day was that it wasn’t just us sitting and listening, we were able to participate in multiple activities, but my absolute favourite part was when we got to dance. Dante

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge opened on Monday for teachers, students and parents and concludes Friday 28 August.

The PRC was instigated to encourage wide reading in schools. The student website is a place where students can record their reading, browse the booklists to earmark further reading and explore information about authors. For continuing students, the username and passwords remain the same. For new students, the Lucy Hill Library will apply for usernames and passwords and these will be disseminated in due course. Students who have completed the PRC at their previous school need to carefully link their new account in the opening questionnaire so that their previous reading counts towards future certificates. It is very special to receive Gold and Platinum awards which are handed out by the Principal.

Connection, Community and Chapel

This term in our Junior Campus chapels we have been considering the theme of connection. We have been looking at this concept in a number of ways. From God’s connection to people, people’s connection to God and people’s connection with each other. The Bible shares the value that is placed on connection, highlighting God’s love and care for people and the lengths He went to connect with people. It also gives direction to how people might connect in a positive way. In the Preparatory School we love to find ways for families and students to be connected as a community and one way to do that is to share experiences together. To this end our inaugural Welcome to Kindy Chapel was created to give Kindergarten families an opportunity to share in our Chapel services and gain an understanding of what happens at Chapel. Thank you to those of you who were able to join us on Monday and we look forward to seeing families as they are able to share these special times with us throughout the year. In our Chapel service this week we reviewed our connection theme and began our investigation of how people connect with each other. We considered the value of connecting with people who are different to ourselves and God’s love for all people. We told a story Jesus first told, The Good Samaritan, which we will consider in class in a deeper way. Ms Moses, one of our Music teachers, led our singing with a few favourites and taught us a new song for our Easter Service. Mrs Kourakis, Dean of Students joined us to lead our thanksgiving gratitude prayer where we had a chance to reflect on the many things in our lives we are grateful for. Asking children what they are grateful for is often a beautiful and surprising process.

We will have the opportunity to connect as a community in our Chapel services throughout the year and those dates will be shared in upcoming Note Days. In Term 2 and 3 each Kindergarten, Yr 1 and 2 class will lead Chapel for the Year Group.

Families are also welcome to join us for our Easter and Christmas celebrations later in the school year.

Transition Gold

Transition Gold has been extremely busy getting used to the routine and the fast pace nature of the class. The children in Transition Gold have enjoyed the change of environment in the Prep School, particularly our weekly Library visits, PE, Music, French and Christian Studies specialist lessons. These important times give the students a sense of what Kindergarten will be like next year. During group sessions, Transition Gold learn mathematical, literacy, fine motor and social skills concepts. The high teacher-to-student-to-teacher ratio allows differentiation in programs and personalise learning to meet student’s needs. During mathematical sessions, we have been focusing on one to one correspondence and more and less. Pre-lit sessions focus on particular books, looking at unfamiliar words and their meanings as well as syllables. The children have loved watching small videos and playing syllable games on the interactive whiteboard.

Project work is at the core of the Transition program and allows for deep exploration and understanding driven by the students. Currently, students have been investigating different artists and their use of various mediums to create art work. Television exploration has been an interesting theme and students were excited to learn the mechanics of a television.

Basketball

There was a lot of excitement over the weekend with 15 Redlands Basketball teams playing in the Semi Finals across Penrith and St Pauls. The day was off to a great start with the Junior A and Junior B girls both securing a spot in the Final. The Junior A Girls played against St Spyridon and, with an early lead, managed to run away with a 52-34 win. The Junior B girls had a much closer game against St Andrew’s Cathedral School but managed to hold out SACS in the final minutes finishing 20-14. The Inter A girls finished as the first seed and were playing against the fourth seed, Blue Mountains Grammar School. Although the game was close to start, the girls soon picked up the pace and dominated the second half to finish 47-14. The Inter C girls played against the top of the table SACS. Losing by a narrow seven point margin, it was a great effort from the girls. The 1sts girls were up against St Pauls and being a player down due to injury, knew it would be challenging. A great start from Redlands saw an early lead, however, St Pauls answered with their own scoring run which saw a close game at half time. Redlands managed to keep the upper hand and take the win to put them through to the Final.

The undefeated 13A boys continued their great form with a very convincing win showing they will be hard to beat in the final. The 13B boys were playing against Oakhill and despite finishing the game with a 17-28 loss, this group will be an exciting group to watch in the future. The 13E boys were also playing against Oakhill. Our boys played hard until the end and should be proud of their efforts. The 14A boys game was one of the most exciting of the day, it was a fast-paced game against Oakhill. Coming right down to the wire, the game was tied 28-28 at the final siren and headed into overtime. Oakhill scored a quick two points in the overtime period which unfortunately went unmatched by the Redlands team, seeing Oakhill heading through the Final with a 30-28 win. The 17A boys found themselves playing Oakhill, who in the last two match-ups had found themselves down by 15-20 at the final siren. The ability from our boys to convert turnovers into points gave Redlands an early lead. Oakhill were unable to recover and the Redlands 17A finished the game with a 47-26 win, heading to the Ffinals. The 1sts boys played against St Stannies, and could have felt quite confident after the last time these teams met. It was a close game to start and both teams struggled to put points on the board early. After regrouping at half time, Redlands came out much stronger in the second half and managed to run away with the game, winning 74-58. The 15B boys knew they would be up for a tough game against Oakhill and a solid first half saw Redlands leading at half time. Unfortunately we couldn’t hold onto the lead and a strong second half from Oakhill resulted in a 24-34 loss to our 15Bs. The 17Bs knew it was going to be a tough game and it remained close until the final siren. Some great team basketball and composure from Redlands saw them six points up at the end of the game, securing a spot in the Final. The final game of the day was the 2nds boys. From the very start we had the upper hand and produced a lead that they were able to sustain for the duration of the game, finishing ten points ahead of Oakhill.

Best of luck to the 13 Redlands teams that have progressed through to the final this Saturday.

Rowing

Over the previous weekend the Rowing program took on the Riverview Gold Cup Regatta as our final regatta for the season with a number of outstanding results. The Senior Girls 1sts crew of Emily Barrelle (Yr 11), Emily Batemyr (Yr 11), Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 10), Maddi Howard (Yr 12) and stand-in coxswain Charlie Harman (Yr 10) won the School Girl Coxed Quad while the combination of Blythe Olgive (Yr 10), Lilly Dijkstra (Yr 10), Emma Canton (Yr 10), Charlie Harman (Yr 10) and cox Hannah Mitchell (Yr 9) won the Yr 10 Division 3.

Sailing

Over the weekend the Redlands Sailing program took over most of Sydney Harbour with students competing at both the SheSails teams racing regatta, SailGP Inspire races and 18 of the students trying out racing on two 35ft and 50ft yachts. The SheSails teams racing regatta was hosted by Middle Harbour Yacht Club. The Redlands team consisted of Lucy Baird, Alissa Braden, Carmen Brisson, Katina Casimaty, Cleophe Eliatamby and Maia Healey. Despite very limited training in the Pacers and tough competition from Wenona, Ascham and Monte, our girls sailed exceptionally well and placed 2nd overall after a tough queen of the castle final series. This is a great achievement for the newly formed Redlands girls team and places the squad in a strong position heading into the NSW Championships in May.

Whilst the Redlands girls team was competing at SheSails, the Redlands Sailing program also had Ella Delaney competing in the SailGP Inspire racing on RS14 catamarans. The SailGP Inspire program is a selective racing program for Sydney’s up-coming youth sailors and offers them the opportunity to compete in short races over two days during the SailGP Sydney event. Ella was selected to compete as a crew on the MHYC team and proved that she could sail fast winning a number of the races throughout the regatta. Ella and her skipper placed 2nd overall, a really good result after only training in the boats for three days.

Back at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron the 18 sailors not competing at a regatta had the opportunity to try out yacht racing on two of our members’ 35ft and 50ft yachts. Substantially larger than the Elliott 7s the sailors usually train on, for the majority of the students this was the first time they have had the opportunity to get onto a yacht and practice trimming the sails. A big thank you to the two owners, particularly ex-Redlands parent Michael Mansley, who lent their yachts to the program for the weekend.

Swimming

Unfortunately, last week’s Note Day had an error in the Age Championships, the winner of the U15 Boys Age Championship was Joshua Miller (Yr 10)

Tennis

Last Saturday was Round 4 of the Summer Tennis competition. With only one round left before the finals/playoff’s, many teams are in the running to finish first or second in their division which will book themselves a place in the Final. In the 8.00am timeslot, students have been working on their match play skills and is was great to see the improvement in many students serve and successful rallies which was reflected in the points and games won. In the 10.00am timeslot, the students hard work at training was evident in the great matches played, with many of the matches hinging on only a couple of key points.

Sebastian Dobson and James Robinson will play as members of the ISA Tennis team in two Representative Tennis matches against the CAS team this week and GPS in the coming weeks as part of the Representative Tennis season. Best of luck.

Important Tennis Dates:
Saturday 7 March – NSTA Round 5
Saturday 14 March – NSTA Finals/Playoffs

Touch Football

It was a great day of Touch Football out at St Pauls Grammar School on Saturday morning with six teams featuring in the Semi Finals. Our Junior Cs were up first and they looked to dominate early against St Andrew’s Cathedral School. The girls jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back taking the game 6-2. Our Senior 2nds were taking on Blue Mountains Grammar. In a very close game, they looked to control the tempo early and late in the first half they managed to score a much needed try. The second half was a see-sawing event, with Blue Mountains scoring an equalising try. Redlands were unable to stop this momentum with Blue Mountains scoring to take the match 1-2. Our Senior 4ths who were taking on Barker College, jumped out of the blocks to start the match scoring the first try. They looked to build on this start however Barker were able to slow our attack and were able to score some quick tries, making Redlands down 1-3 at the half time break. The girls dug deep in the second half, but unfortunately were unable to score, with Barker taking the final 1-5. Our Junior A team were taking on much fancied Scots All Saints. The girls had worked hard on their communication and drives all week. Scots jumped out firing scoring two opportune tries and our girls looked to fight back snagging one back. The second half started with a bang, each team scoring quick tries. Unfortunately it was Scots who got the better of the momentum and took the match 2-6. Our Junior Bs had a tough match from the start, taking on the number 1 St Andrew’s Cathedral School. The girls worked hard in defence and their attack was looking good, enabling them to score a great try against the run of play. However, they were unable to match St Andrew’s who took the match 1-6. Our 1sts had an uphill battle taking on Barker College 1 who had won last year’s competition. Barker were very strong with their attack and they were able to score some quick tries to start the game. Redlands were digging deep and getting down the field and into some great positions throughout the match. Barker were very good in their defence but we were able to score to begin the second half with a great passage of play down the left side of the field. It was a little too late however, with Barker taking the match in the end.

The final match of the day for Redlands were the Junior Cs taking on 1st place St Spyridon College. Despite scoring some early tries, Redlands looked to control possession of the ball and were able to get in behind Spyridon to claw back some tries. It was a tough day playing two big games on the one day and the girls did not want to give up. The girls unfortunately went down in the Final but showed great spirit not only in this match but throughout the season.

A huge thank you to all the Touch Football parents and students this season, it has been a great year for all the coaches and staff. The girls have grown and developed throughout the season and we are looking forward to the 2020/2021 season.

Absences

The frantic pace that is Term 1 will die down shortly but for the time being we are in full swing and this is especially relevant for our Year 6 students , some of whom have a busy Monday ahead. We have 14 Year 6 students who were selected to swim at HICES Swimming Carnival on Monday and as soon they finish their events, they will get on another bus and head to Canberra to join their class mates on their Year 6 Camp. We wish these swimmers and the rest of the 2020 HICES Swim Squad the best of luck on Monday. If successful, they will then progress through to the CIS Carnival later this term.

Addressing a few housekeeping items, can you please ensure on match day students arrive for warm up 30min before the scheduled start of their game. Likewise, if you know you are going to be away or cannot attend the match, please complete an absentee notice via the link. That way we can cover your child’s absence without having to ask other families last minute as they finish their match. We had an embarrassing situation last week in the Year 5 and Year 6 G Basketball team where we only 3 students turned up for their game (held indoors). Prior to tip off we had to ask students in Year 3 and year 4 to stay back and play another game after theirs just to avoid a forfeit. Thanks to those students and families.

Online Draw

To date the feedback for this online draw has been excellent, thank you to those who have passed on feedback so far. This is certainly something that we will keep as we prepare for Winter.

Students/parents/caregivers are asked to refer to the draw towards the end of the week so you are aware of any changes. Please do not look at the draw at the start of the term and pencil in times into your calendar as changes may come through late in the week from host schools.

Online Team Lists

Students/parents/caregivers are asked to refer to these team lists towards the end of the week so you are aware of any changes the coaches have made after training and/or games. The meeting times for matches remains unchanged with students requiring to meet their coaches 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the match.

For all other changes please see the updated Term 1 Calendar that can be found here, Junior School Sports Calendar.

Instrument Insurance

School hired instruments must be included on personal home and contents insurance as Redlands cannot be held responsible for instruments which are lost, stolen or damaged. As all instruments are very fragile, we ask for your assistance in ensuring that students do not let other children play with their instrument, instruments are kept in a safe place and out of extreme temperatures (ie. hot car) and are not left out of their case when not in use.

Daily Instrument Storage Arrangements

On a Monday morning Cello (only) students are to bring their instruments for storage in the purpose-built cupboards in the Parkes Building corridor. For the security and safety of all resources, instruments are not to be left at school overnight as they are needed at home for regular practice sessions. Violins and Violas are to be stored safely within the child’s classroom.

On a Thursday morning, Cello, Trombone, Baritone and Violin (only) students are to bring their instruments for storage in the purpose-built cupboards in the Parkes Building corridor. For the security and safety of all resources, instruments are not to be left at school overnight as they are needed at home for regular practice sessions. Flutes and Clarinets are to be stored in school bags on Thursday and all other instruments are to be stored safely within the child’s classroom. For student safety, instruments are not to be left outside classrooms in corridors or on the ground.
