Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon – Celebrating 120 Years of Redlands Sports

This is a great opportunity for our whole school community to learn more about the history and current offering and role of Sports education at Redlands whilst meeting parents across sports, Year Groups and Redlands leadership. Tables will be organised by Year Groups and/or sports, eg. Netball, Snowsports, Basketball, Rugby etc. which you indicate when you make your booking.

Our Guest Speakers, past Redlands students, will share their very inspiring journey:
Karyn Gojnich (Davis), Sailing, Class of 1978 (Olympic medalist, Redlander and former Redlands parent)
Janusz Hooker, Rowing, Class of 1987 (Olympic medallist, Atlanta 1996)
Lachlan Mackay, Rugby, Class of 2000 (Wallaby and Brumby)
Holly Crawford, Snowsports, Class of 2001 (Olympic Snowboarder)

One of our esteemed alumni speakers is Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987. Janusz, grandson of the LJ Hooker founder, led a consortium of investors who acquired the LJ Hooker company from Suncorp in 2009 and has a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School of Business in the US.

“Sport, especially team sport, provides you many of the key building blocks for life. While at Redlands I simply played sports because it was fun and I liked to win. I did not realise I was learning teamwork, persistence, discipline, work ethic, the elation of winning and more importantly recovering from defeat. The list goes on. School sport was considered a recreation, downtime from class or homework when actually the lessons it taught provides a real advantage in life as an adult – professionally and personally.” Janusz Hooker

Passionate about innovation, in 2018 Janusz led the development and launch of LJ Hooker Avnu, a new force in real estate using transformative technology. The first LJ Hooker Avnu opened in Sydney’s blue-chip lower North Shore.

Kindy Gymnastics

As a curriculum initiative last year, the School was pleased to introduce a Gymnastics lesson into the Kindergarten program. The integration of Gymnastics is widely known to improve body management and control, and aids in the development of gross motor and manipulative skills. Gymnastics promotes coordination, flexibility, agility, muscular strength, endurance and bone strength, all essential in the physical development of young children. Extended participation in Gymnastics classes also provides many additional cognitive and psychological benefits that will continue to benefit an individual throughout their life, such as social interaction and discipline, improved mental focus and concentration. All Kindergarten students are thoroughly enjoying their one hour sessions on either Mondays or Fridays, instructed by a dedicated team of Gymnastics coaches.

Teaching/Learning and Wellbeing Session

Last Tuesday, Dean of Students Mrs Sam Kourakis, and Dean of Teaching and Learning Mr Nigel Coutts, presented to families the positive behaviour learning framework which contributes to the development of a safe, positive and supportive learning community which is being implemented on the Junior Campus. You will find some interesting points below from the presentation, as well as the slide deck on Redlands Pulse, if you were unable to attend. Thank you to both presenters, whose expertise and knowledge is far reaching in this area.

  • There is a well-established link between student engagement, student behaviour and academic achievement.
  • A learning environment can be viewed as an ecosystem involving interactions between the physical environment, the teacher, the curriculum and a multitude of individual student variables, all of which influence student behaviour.
  • Every learning environment across our Campus has a set of behavioural expectations outlining behaviours for learning, respectful relationships and safety and organisation. These behaviours have been generated by the children using Circle Time.

From the research of Mary-Helen Immordino Yang:

  • It is literally neurobiologically impossible to build memories, engage complex thoughts, or make meaningful decisions without emotion. Put succinctly, we only think about things we care about.
  • When learning and knowledge are relatively devoid of emotion, when people learn things by “rote” without internally driven motivation and without a sense of interest or real-world relevance, then it is likely that they won’t be able to use what they learn efficiently in the real world.

The consequences of this include a need to nurture a classroom culture where students feel safe, supported, where they are willing to take risks and enjoy positive relationships. Clear expectations and norms help us adjust to an environment. We learn best when we have an understanding of why the learning matters to us, where we are confident in our ability to achieve goals, even when they involve struggle. Having time to switch-off, quietly reflect and play along with quality rest are essential for learning.

Clean Up Australia Day

Last Sunday, I joined several enthusiastic Redlands families with cleaning up rubbish from the Spit Reserve. It was such a beautiful, sunny day to be by the water and the many bags of rubbish that were collected was indicative of a productive afternoon. Thank you to the School’s Service Coordinator Kria Coleman, for her organisation of this event and for providing a delicious afternoon tea. To the children and parents who took part this year, thank you for taking time out of your weekend to give back to the community. I am always heartened by the generosity of Redlands families when it comes to community and charity events.

Easter Eggs for Sydney’s Homeless

Redlands Preparatory School will once again provide Easter eggs and special encouraging cards to the men and women experiencing homelessness at Edward Eagar Lodge in Sydney this Easter. What started as a simple gesture of care has become a much-anticipated tradition among both those who give and receive. The homeless men and women who have received the gifts in the past often ask about the wellbeing of the students who made their special cards and are looking forward to their treats again this year. The children love the story of one man who has kept his cards each year and they have become his most prized possessions. They also love preparing the gift bags and the cards and this simple gift allows some fellow Sydneysiders experiencing homelessness, a sense of inclusion in this celebration.

For families wishing to be involved, please send Easter eggs, especially small and medium-sized eggs to Prep Reception. The students will create gift bags with the donated eggs and cards during recess, lunch and Christian Studies lessons. Our aim this year is to create 300 bags. For any additional information please contact Fiona McKenzie, Junior Campus Chaplain.

Premiers Reading Challenge

Please look out for information in the coming weeks from the Librarian in regards to the Premiers Reading Challenge. It is delightful to hear some families already keen to begin this challenge. If you have your Student Planner from 2018, Log in and Password details will be there for you to re-use. Before the end of this term, Mrs Roberts will place details in Planners for all students to begin this wonderful opportunity.

Blue Class News

Blue Class Juniors and Seniors started the year welcoming new friends and families and have enjoyed the first few weeks getting to know each other. Blue Juniors have read the story My nose, your nose written by Melanie Walsh and engaged in interesting discussions about their differences and similarities in thoughts, feelings, qualities and abilities. Each child has drawn a self-portrait and answered some questions about themselves.

Miss Nicholls: “What are you good at doing?”

Jesse (3 Years 9 Months): “I’m really good with cats. I pat their back and scratch their ears. They like to be scratched places they can’t reach.”

Blue Seniors have also been involved in a ‘Who Am I?’ investigation and have now started to discuss the concept of a ‘balanced’ friendship. After reading the story Friendship is like a Seesaw written by Shona Innes and Irisz Agocs, the class discussed how they can try to keep their friendship seesaw balanced, if one friend is ‘up’ and the other is ‘down’. Miss Webber and Miss Nicholls have been so proud to hear “my seesaw is not balanced” drifting through the playground as the Blue Class Seniors build on their friendship strategies and navigate their social environments with less reliance on teacher intervention.

From the Principal

This past week saw some significant achievements over the wide spectrum of our extra-curricular program and I sincerely congratulate all students for their participation and achievements, and thank all staff, parents and other students for their support.

Our Debating teams had a 50-50 success rate in last Friday night’s debates, including  a win over PLC. On the Sports courts, 10 of our Basketball teams have progressed to this weekend’s ISA Grand Finals. I personally saw a number of the Basketball finals and was delighted with the courage and spirit shown, regardless of results. Our Inter A girls started slowly in their game against Barker, but lifted in the second half and steadily overhauled their opponents and finally enjoyed a comfortable and well-deserved win. Our Girls Firsts also played Barker and were up against a team replete with very good players; our girls displayed a never-die spirit and continued to score right to the end and should be proud of their performance.

Our Rowing team travelled to Canberra for the Head of the Lake Regatta and won the overall Combined Girls and Boys Points Score, with a significant number of team and individual medals.

More details of these achievements can be found in the Secondary School Sport Section.

On the Service front, a number of students and families from Years 4 to 12 participated in the Clean Up Australia Day last Sunday at The Spit Reserve. Thank you for your clean-up efforts in support of our local community.

Tomorrow we will be celebrating International Women’s Day. Over the past few days on the Senior Campus, the Prefects have been selling ribbons to raise money for the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

Clean Up Australia Day

It was great to see so many members of our community at the Redlands Clean Up Australia Day event held at Spit Reserve on Sunday. Students from Yrs 4-12 were in attendance scouring the parkland and public spaces around our boatshed, doing our part for the environment by cleaning up various items of litter. I would like to thank our Service Prefects and Ms Coleman for organising Sunday’s event and I hope all of our students take on the mantra I have often shared of “leaving it better than you found it” so that we can all do our part to better the environment not just one day a year, but all 365 days a year.

Winter School

We are still accepting applications for 2019 Winter School for students in Ys 7-10. This is a unique opportunity which Redlands offers, enabling students to gain independence in a supportive residential environment at our High Country Campus in Jindabyne. The program is not just about improving skiing or snowboard skills; students maintain academic rigour while living in a small community and growing through the challenges and opportunities this presents. Information on Winter School can be found on Redlands Pulse and applications close at 5pm on Friday 15 March. Winter School is a great opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones and challenge themselves in a wonderful residential community. Limited places are available so if you are interested, please go to the Winter School page on Redlands Pulse to find out further information and submit an application.

Sports Update

There have been some wonderful results over the past week as the summer sports season is quickly coming to a close. In Touch Football, a number of our girls’ teams competed in Semi Finals matches over the weekend, showing just how far this sport has come in the past few years. In Basketball, we had 17 teams competing in the Semi Finals on Saturday with ten teams progressing to the Finals this weekend. And in Rowing, our crews travelled to Canberra to compete in the Head of the Lake regatta. In addition to a number of excellent individual results, Redlands was the Overall School winner of the regatta – an outstanding achievement. I wish all teams competing in Finals this weekend the best of luck and hope they represent themselves and the School with pride in their various competitions.

Women in Surveying Day

Rebecca Faurby (Yr 12), Caitlin Wong and Cara Eccleston (Yr 11) volunteered to attend this inaugural event this week. In Cara’s words: “the surveying day was an interesting experience that opened my eyes to the world of surveying and taught me a lot about the profession. I learnt about the shortage of surveyors and I was inspired by how passionate each of the surveyors and speakers were at the event. During the lunch, it was very helpful to be able to talk to the actual surveyors to learn about what the reality of the job is like”.

Chaplain

Shrove Tuesday is a traditional festival as the last day before Lent. It is also known as Pancake Tuesday. Students enjoyed pancakes on Tuesday lunchtime as a reminder of the sweetness and goodness of God. The central concept of the Christian Gospel is that we are not saved by our own goodness but by the grace and generosity of God. Our culture tends towards meritocracy and we value a good work ethic, however this can stop us seeing our flaws and limitations. The bible perfectly balances these ideas: we are brought to God by his generous act in Christ, not our own goodness. However, as we experience his love and forgiveness, our lives are transformed and lead to working hard and doing good things. As we lose sight of the grace of God we become either weighed down with the burden of work or arrogant, prideful of our own greatness. Neither is good.

The little respite of sweet syrup and pancakes reminded students that God offers his love and restoration at his own cost, but free to us. The reaction of students as they realised that the pancakes were free, was lovely. Some were surprised, some queried, some wondered if they should make a donation but all enjoyed the pancakes for the taking.

Thanks to the staff and students who gave their time to make this happen.

This week is also International Women’s Day. In Chapel, students have been reflecting on the women who they admire and who inspire them. Amy Carmichael is one of those women for me. Despite poor health, losing her father when she was 18, facing family bankruptcy, she demonstrated remarkable resilience and faith. She moved to India as a response to God’s love and worked there for 50 years. She gave refuge to hundreds of girls and young women as they fled enforced prostitution and was instrumental in bringing social and legal reform to protect these vulnerable people. Her faith in God compelled her to stand and move forward against extraordinarily difficult situations. This is a great model for our students of humble service and resilience.

Service

International Women’s Day

At Redlands we are fortunate to have time within our programs to consider and engage with many social issues. This gives students an opportunity to reflect on their own personal circumstances and the issues within our community close to home, nationally or in the wider world, which are often in stark contrast to our situation.

With this in mind, this week we are taking some time in Tutor lessons and at an assembly on Friday to consider gender equity with the theme of Balance for Better. While at Redlands we strive to provide balanced educational opportunities for boys and girls, the world around us may not always be so equal. Some food for thought came from new research published this week from the World Economic Forum (WEF), which, as part of its annual Global Gender Gap Report, ranked almost 150 countries on gender equality. Australia ranked 39th on this list illustrating that we still have a way to go to identify and remove systemic impediments to real equality.

We need to continue the conversation at school and more broadly about striving for equity, not focusing on promoting girls and women over boys and men but levelling the playing field. Whether this be our expectations of the role girls and women can play in the world, the careers they have access to, the educational opportunities that are available to boys and girls or the legal, historical and cultural impediments to equality that still exist here and much more significantly in developing countries.

Our assembly guest speaker this week was Jodi Mullen from Room to Read, who shared with us the work this organisation does to develop literacy levels and gender equality in education throughout the world. Yr 9 students will have an opportunity to develop some initiatives to support this work as the year unfolds.

Clean Up Australia

There was a great turn out to our Clean Up Australia event at The Spit Reserve. We had over 40 students and families from Yr 4 through to Yr 12 and it was a beautiful sunny afternoon. The local Scouts provided a sausage sizzle and there was an environmental information stand from the Two Hands Project . Mosman Council challenged us to focus on the little things, small pieces of plastic and cigarette butts etc. It was wonderful to see so many students pitching in to make a noticeable difference to our local community.

Pastoral Care

This week during Pastoral Care time, we highlighted the importance of time management in how to efficiently deal with multiple deadlines. With assignments large and small, research for ideas, in-class tests, presentations, it’s easy for students to feel overwhelmed by the number of deadlines they must meet and not knowing where to turn next.

I’m delighted that a growing number of students are able to find a means of scheduling their tasks on a weekly basis, reflecting everything they need to do and the dates by which they have to complete it. They are also reminded to be realistic of the actual working time they have for everyday and always to give themselves some downtime to keep the balance. Some students found that going into “offline mode” while working helps them to improve efficiency. Turn off mobile phone, disable message notification and do the best to minimise distractions for at least 25 minute blocks of work. In addition, the Study Centre in the Library is gradually recognised to be a place to get specific support, especially working on a large piece of an assignment.

Students are also encouraged to reassess the space of their home learning environment. Below are some points to consider from Dr Prue Salter’s study skills tips for March:

  1. Natural lighting is best, but if not possible then a good strong bulb in your room and a bright desk lamp is essential. What is the lighting like in your study area?
  2. Fresh air and oxygen to the brain helps keep you mentally alert. What is the ventilation and air quality like in your study area?
  3. Your work space sets the tone for the way you approach your study. Is your desk large enough? What is your working space or desk like?
  4. The chair you use should be comfortable (but not so comfy you fall asleep) and adjustable to reduce strain on your neck and shoulders. What is your chair like?
  5. When you are trying to memorise things, quiet is essential. No music (unless it is certain types of classical like baroque). How effectively can you keep your room quiet?
  6. Storage is essential to help you keep your notes organised and sorted. Shelves, a filing cabinet, drawers. What is the storage like in your room?
  7. It is important to keep your study area uncluttered and organised. A large pin board for notices and a calendar are useful. How organised is your study area?
  8. How many distractions do you have in your room? Computer, phone etc? It is always a good idea to switch off or remove distractions before you start work. If you have to use your laptop make a conscious effort to not use personal technology during times when you are doing schoolwork. How well do you cope with the distractions in your room?
Clean Up Australia Day

A big thank you to a large group of Yr 12 volunteers for getting their hands dirty by cleaning up various parts at The Spit Reserve last Sunday afternoon. Plenty of plastic rubbish was collected and their effort definitely helped to make a difference.

Managing Motivation

Some students use ‘I don’t have any motivation’ as an excuse for not doing work. You have to accept that these are just excuses you are using to justify doing what you want to do – ie. doing no work! It is a cop-out and it is really due to fear – even though you probably don’t want to admit it. What is going on in your mind, even though you probably don’t realise it, is that you are secretly afraid of doing badly at school. The fear of failure or not meeting expectations has led you to look for excuses to not do any work so that if you do go badly – then it is not because you tried and failed it is because you didn’t do any work! It is a safety mechanism your brain is putting in place. To make a change you have to take responsibility for your performance and realise that you are the only person who can change the situation.

Sports Achievements

Basketball

Good luck to all the Basketball players this weekend in the Finals.

Rowing

Congratulations to Alex Coney, Max Durrant, Stephanie Larcos, Madeleine Howard, Mitchell Simpson, Mathew White and Nicholas Wilkes for their brilliant results at the Head of the Lake in Canberra on the weekend. We certainly hope that some of those close results go in our favour next weekend at the Head of the River.

Peru Expedition Trek and Travel Day

On Sunday 24 February the Peru Expedition team, accompanied by Mr Gray and Ms Richardson, took part in their Trek and Travel Day. This was a training event where students worked together as a team with their Antipodeans Expedition Leader and travelling teachers. It’s an important step in the team preparation to travel overseas and was the first opportunity for the team to work with their Antipodeans Expedition Leader.

The day involved a combination of urban trekking and travel, designed to simulate experiences that the team will have overseas. It was a fun but tiring day, and the team impressed with their ability to problem solve and work together in preparation for their exciting Expedition in June.

Shrove Tuesday

On Tuesday, our Chaplain Ms Lihou made and served pancakes to students in Liggins Quad. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, when traditionally rich foods (butter, eggs etc) were consumed before the start of Lent. Grateful thanks must go to Ms Lihou and the students who assisted with this event.

International Women’s Day

This Friday 8 March is International Women’s Day. To celebrate this day, we will be having a whole School Assembly on Friday. In Chapel on Tuesday, Ms Lihou’s focus was on the contribution of the Christian Missionary Amy Carmichael to the plight of children in India. Amy Carmichael served in India for 55 years and was a truly inspirational and remarkable woman for her time.

Student Achievements

We are at the time of year when many students have excelled in their Summer Representative Sports and have made it through to the Semi Finals. We congratulate these students for their efforts throughout the season. A special mention must go to our rowers who went to Canberra for the ACT Head of the Lake last weekend and our Yr 10 Girls Quad won a gold and a bronze. Well done girls.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

This Friday 8 March is International Women’s Day 2019, celebrating the achievements of women and raising awareness about the inequality that exists between men and women across the world. This topic is particularly relevant for Yr 9 currently, as they are learning about gender inequality as their social awareness topic this term.

Being the mother of a teenage girl, as well as two teenage boys, gender equality is something that I truly hope will become the norm over the lifetime of my children, as I’m sure we all do. As Yr 9 are discovering this term, there is undeniable inequality that exists between men and women, and our young people have the ability to make changes to the world.

Cyber Bullying

Some of you may have heard of a concerning latest craze called the ‘Momo Challenge’. It is apparently a form of cyberbullying prevalent on platforms such as WhatsApp and YouTube through which children receive anonymous threatening messages, tied to pictures of ‘Momo’. Please be aware of this and perhaps have a conversation with your child to ensure they stay safe.

Mother’s Day Classic

A reminder to sign up for Sunday 13 May, the Mother’s Day Classic 5km run. More details are available on the Note Day Service page. I will be registering to run in the race and would love some company on the day! So please join me and other parents/teachers from Redlands for this worthwhile cause.

Public Speaking

Lunch and Learn – Free public speaking workshops in school: Masters Academy is running one more free lunch time session on Public Speaking (with nibbles provided) for students in L.1.4 on Thursday 14 March. Anyone is welcome. Please ask your son or daughter to drop in.

International Women’s Day and Dinner Opportunity

This Friday we will be having a whole school assembly on International Women’s Day, where a guest speaker from the organisation Room to Read Girls Education Program in Nepal will be presenting. As Yr 9 are currently learning about gender inequality, we are lucky enough to have two student places at a dinner in Sydney on Thursday 14 March. Please ask to see your child’s email from me for further details. Click here if you wish to know more about this organisation.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students have been looking at cyber bullying: what it looks like and what their response should be to it as a victim, a perpetrator and a bystander.

Social Awareness Program

This week students are creating a presentation regarding their chosen organisation on gender inequality, which will take a few weeks to complete.

Some students are naturally organised; for others, organisation is a learnt skill. Each cycle, Tutors are viewing Student Planners to ensure they are being used correctly as a tool to aid time management. We ask that parents also assist students in the use of this important resource by viewing and signing Student Planners each week. Students should be recording 1) the date Home Learning is assigned; and, 2) the date Home Learning is due.

Study Tips For Students As We Approach Assessments

The start of a year is a good time to reassess the space where you work at home. It is best to work in whatever space has the least amount of distractions. Here are some points to consider:

Soak It All In

I recently had a conversation with a good friend whose daughter was leaving home to move to university and the emotions that this milestone was stirring for him and his wife as parents. It reminded me of an article I had read by Misty Brewer Lee on how she was learning to cope with the transition of parenting a young adult daughter and teenage son and trying to hold on, whilst also learning to let go.

I have shared the article below because, whilst she talks about this particular transitional time, the focus of the message is about the times when our children are much younger and how we should embrace these times and truly aim to ‘soak it all in’. I read quite widely but sometimes books or articles resonate or strike a deeper chord so in sharing this, I hope this might do the same for someone else too.

When you first have children, they talk about the challenges of parenting…. the struggles of a baby waking in the night, the toddler who won’t stay in their bed, the cost of childcare, injuries from sports…Having to take time off work to pick them up from school when they don’t feel well, helping them with homework, a messy house, the never-ending laundry, the cost to buy school clothes, packing their lunches….

You watch their eyes light up on Christmas morning…. and try to soak in the  magic of those moments. You coach them in sports, rushing to practices and ballgames… and drive them all over the country to let them play the game they love… no matter how exhausting or expensive it becomes.

Life is just so busy that you rarely even stop to think what the end of those days looks like. In fact, it’s not really even something you can wrap your mind around. You go into it thinking that 18-20 years sounds like a long time….

Then suddenly hours turn into days…days into months…and months into years.

That little person that used to crawl up next to you in bed and cuddled up to watch cartoons suddenly becomes this young adult who hugs you in the hallway as they come and go. And the chaos and laughter that used to echo throughout your home gets filled with silence and solitude.

You’ve learned how to parent a child who needs you to care for and protect them but have no clue how the whole ‘letting go’ thing is supposed to work. So, you hold on as tight as you can wondering how time passed so quickly…feeling guilty that you missed something….

Because even though you had 20 years…..it just somehow doesn’t seem like it was enough.

You ask yourself so many questions…

Did you teach them the right lessons?
Did you read them enough books as a child?
Spend enough time playing with them?
How many school parties did you have to miss?
Do they really know how much you love them?
What could I have done better as a parent?

…..When it’s time for them to go, it all hits you like a ton of bricks.

And all you can do is pray….hope….and trust that God will protect them as they start to make their way into the world alone.

Parenting is by far the most amazing experience of your life….that at times leaves you exhilarated…. while others leave you heartbroken. But one thing is certain….. it’s never enough time…

So, for all the parents with young children…whose days are spent trying to figure out how to make it through the madness…exhausted day in and day out…

Soak. It. All. In.

Because one day…. all those crazy days full of cartoons, snuggles, sleepovers, Christmas morning magic, ballgames, practices and late-night dinners…

All come to an end.

And you’re left hoping that you did enough right, so that when they spread their wings….they’ll fly.

V.M Medway Award for Outstanding Girl – Primary Sport

I was thrilled to hear that our 2018 Junior School female Sports Captain, Jasmine Black, was presented with the highly prestigious V.M Medway Award for Outstanding Girl – Primary Sport, in New South Wales for 2018.

At the 2018 School Sport Australia Championships, Jasmine was a standout performer as the goalkeeper for New South Wales and conceded only three goals during the week-long National Tournament, helping her team to the silver medal. Mr Carter and I were able to cheer her on in her match against Queensland as the tournament was held in Sydney so were also able to witness both her play and her leadership within that team.

Jasmine attended the presentation dinner with her family and this recognition was a complete surprise to her and she was also presented with a Red Award on the evening, an award for primary students that perform at an exceptional level at the National Championships.

Alongside her sporting achievements, Jasmine’s ever-cheerful demeanour, humility and personal qualities stood out in her time in the Junior School. I bumped into Jasmine just this week and was able to congratulate her in person and she is already looking forward to continuing her enjoyment and development in Sport in the Secondary School. Congratulations, Jasmine.

Tuesday 2 April – Yr 5

Parent Seminar: Positive Behaviour Support for Learning

It was wonderful again to welcome a large number of Junior Campus parents as we continued our parent seminar series. Led most ably by our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Coutts, and our Dean of Students, Mrs Kourakis, Tuesday’s session presented parents with information on some of our contemporary and innovative teaching and learning pedagogy, as well as how we support student wellbeing at Redlands. As I shared in my closing comments, it is always wonderful to have parents actively involved in their child’s learning journey but we are also mindful that not every parent is able to get to every seminar so the information slides are on Redlands Pulse for your access and any follow up comments or questions can be directed via email to Mr Coutts or Mrs Kourakis.

Clean Up Australia Day

A sincere thank you for the service of many Redlands students, teachers and families who participated in last Sunday’s Clean Up Australia Day community event, an event initiated to help make a positive contribution in the local community. The location of Spit West Reserve was particularly significant as it is right beside our Redlands Rowing Boatshed and the group worked tirelessly in the afternoon sunshine to make a difference to the local environment.

Yr 6 Camp (11-15 March)

Next week sees the first of our 2019 Junior School camps as Yr 6 set off for Canberra. The children and staff are excited about the week and our Dean of Students, Mrs Kourakis, and I am are also looking forward to spending time with them next week, just as we will visit every Year Group on their respective camps in the first semester. I will send parents an email update from Canberra to give you a sense of how the trip is faring and we will endeavour to put some photos up in the Yr 6 section of Redlands Pulse during the week. These special opportunities for teachers and students to observe and interact with one another in an environment outside of the classroom often builds a platform for developing increased connections and insights upon returning to School, not to mention fostering potential new student friendships along the way. I am sure that the trip will provide some wonderful opportunities and memories for students and staff alike and I will share my observations and experiences through Note Day too.

2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has begun for 2019 and Junior School students will receive information this week from their class teachers with both their username and password on it to put it into their Planners. Parents should go to the online link to start entering books and students have until the last day of August to have all their books entered.

Students will be required to read twenty quality books at their appropriate reading level. Fifteen of these books will need to be PRC books with a further five listed as free choice (do keep an eye out for the stickers in the Library at their year level or above). Please note that no more than two books from any series of books can be counted as PRC. After four years of involvement, students receive a Gold PRC certificate and after seven years, a prestigious platinum certificate is awarded in Junior School assembly.

The Arnold Library team and class teachers look forward to promoting and supporting students with this reading challenge for 2019.

The 2019 Mosman Youth Awards in Literature Competition

The entries for the annual Mosman Youth Awards in Literature competition are now open. Since the competition was first held in 1993 as part of the Centenary of Mosman celebrations, over 9000 stories and pieces of poetry have been entered in the competition and Redlands students have had a long history of both participation and success in these awards.

The competition awards prizes for both prose and poetry and is open to primary and secondary students. As in previous years, entries are expected from across New South Wales as well as from local students. The prizes are sponsored by The Lions Club of Mosman, Rotary Club of Mosman, Mosman Community College, Mosman Zu Café and Oracle Books, Mosman.

Entries close on Friday 31 May and the winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Wednesday 28 August at Barry O’Keefe Library. We have a few entry forms in the Library but these are also available online. Class teachers will also encourage students to be involved again in this literary opportunity.

Combined Independent Schools of NSW Sports Selection

Congratulations to our Junior School Sports Captains, Stella Simpson Morgan and Lachlan Carmichael, who have been selected in the NSW Combined Independent Schools teams for Tennis and Basketball respectively. This level of selection is extremely competitive with over 350 independent schools in the State and we wish them well in their upcoming competitions.

The Sport Pathway

We often hear the concept in sport of a ‘pathway’ of development. Usually this will come from a coach, club or sports administrator informing you of a simple linear progression of sport that eventually leads from beginner to expert or club to professional. Often you see it represented like the graph below.

In many ways this makes logical sense. An individual can, from one season to another, develop skills in an organised ascending order, from basic fundamentals through to mastering tactical skills in order to win. This leads people to conclude that the more someone does along this pathway the faster they progress up the pathway. However, this concept is a fallacy. It is good in theory but it is not the reality of an individual’s development. From start to finish, every individual will have completely different journeys physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. All of these factors add in different points of change at different ages of the so called ‘pathway’. Even the age of an athlete can be questioned. Is it an individual’s chronological age? Training age? Weight for age? Intellectual age? All are valid ways of assessing progress at a given point in time.

In reality the pathway should resemble something that looks more like a map of the London underground. A progression where you can go backwards, forwards, sideways, change courses with different speeds and times, all in a way of attaining a desired destination or purpose. Whether that destination is professional sport, improving skills or just having fun with a bunch of mates.

This pathway concept is having a negative effect on sport in society. Parents and children feel pressured to be on this so called “pathway” in order to achieve success. Even at an Under 12 age parents and kids feel they should drop out of sport because they haven’t been selected in a certain representative team and therefore are not on the pathway. The only people that really benefit from sports pathways are those that develop physically earlier than others. Their size and cardiovascular ability will mean that they can often outperform other people of their own age simply by physical capacity. However, this can hold very little value in future years after physical maturation.

There is a need, all around the world, to shift the focus to the retention of children and adolescents within sport. Sport’s purpose is not to develop Olympic success or professional athletes. Within Redlands, and more broadly within society, sport is an opportunity to develop life skills and improve the physical, mental, emotional and social capabilities. Everyone should be on that path.

Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon

In 2019 we are proud to be celebrating 120 years of Sport at Redlands. In honour of this occasion we will be hosting a Redlands Sports Luncheon at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. The lunch will include a panel of four Redlanders across the years who have represented their country or played sport professionally who will reflect on the influence sport has had on their lives and what it means to them today. The panel will be hosted by the Head of Secondary School, Mr Sean Corcoran and Head of Junior School, Mr Ari Guha. This will be a fantastic event for the Redlands community to come together and share stories and experiences in sport in a social setting. Be sure to book a ticket with a group of fellow parents from within the Redlands community. An event not to be missed!

Basketball

On Saturday there were some great results in the Basketball Semi Finals with 11 teams being successful and progressing into the Finals this Saturday 9 March. Our Open B and Open C Boys teams played in exciting games, both teams winning by four points at the final siren. The 17B, 15B and 14B won their games quite convincingly and have all progressed to play against St Augustine’s B teams this Saturday. The 17C Boys are also through to the Final after a nail-biting one point win over CCGS.

Four of our girls teams have made it through to the Final. The Open Bs finished with a nine point win over Barker and will play CCGS this Saturday in what is expected to be a very exciting game. The Inter As had a great second half, hopefully they will continue their momentum this weekend against an undefeated CCGS side. The Junior A and Junior B Girls both had great wins in the Semi’s against SPGS and CCGS respectively.

Best of luck to all teams in the Finals this weekend at Penrith.

Rowing

Last weekend saw the Rowing program head to Canberra for the ACT Head of the Lake regatta. This event attracts schools from across the region including some of the largest coed Rowing programs around. Departing on Friday, our students get an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the venue and course with a brief training session on Lake Burley Griffin before retiring to the accommodation for the evening where crews and coaches can go over their race plans for the next day.

Our Redlands rowers were outstanding across the day of racing, with 27 different crews/scullers walking away from the regatta with a top three position that included 8 Gold, 11 Silver and 8 Bronze medal winning performances. This combined effort from all of our crews led to Redlands being at the top of the table for a combined point score.

From our Senior Girls, both Zoe Kimber (Yr 12) and Maddi Howard (Yr 11) showed individual class to finish 1st in Div 2 and 2nd in Div 1 of the School Girl Single Scull. Earlier in the day they combined together to finish 2nd in the School Girl Double Scull. The Yr 10 girls combined to race in the combinations of Kristin Walker (Yr 10), Emily Barrelle (Yr 10), Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9), Emily Pashley (Yr 10) and coxed by Ema Yasumura (Yr 9) won the School Girl Yr 10 Coxed Quad A Final while the combination of Amelie Archer (Yr 10), Emily Batemyr (Yr 10), Megan Price (Yr 10), Laura Sidoti (Yr 10) coxed by Camille Ghenzer (Yr 8) finished 3rd in the same A Final. To get two crews in this A Final was an achievement itself, let alone winning both Gold and Bronze!

The Senior Boys also had many outstanding achievements with individual glory going to Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10) and Alex Verschoor (Yr 10) who finished 1st in Div 1 and 2nd in Div 2 of the School Boy Yr 10 Single Scull. These boys earlier in the day combined to have a big win in the School Boy Yr 10 Double Scull, a very promising combination that we will be looking to take forward to Nationals. In the School Boy Single Scull, Alec Price (Yr 12) finished 2nd in Div 2 while Nick Wilkes finished 3rd in Div 3 and the combination of Max Durrant (Yr 11) and Mitch Simpson (Yr 11) was a clear 1st place in the School Boy Double Scull.

Our Senior Boys main event of the day was the School Boy Coxed Quad, where both the 1st crew of Mitch Simpson (Yr 11), Max Durrant (Yr 11), Alec Price (Yr 12), Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10) and cox Alex Coney (Yr 11) and the 2nd crew of Nick Wilkes (Yr 11), Alex Verschoor (Yr 10), Matthew White (Yr 11), Tom Morris (Yr 11) and cox Xavier Little (Yr 10) were both pipped at the post by the narrowest margins to finish 2nd in both the Div 1 and Div 2 events. The boys will be very keen to reverse these results at the NSW Boys Head of the River regatta.

The Yr 9 Girls started their day with an all Redlands Girl Yr 9 Single Scull, where in Div 1 Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9), Mia Kloiser-Jones (Yr 9) and Audra Olson (Yr 9) walked away with Gold, Silver and Bronze while in Div 2 it was Blythe Ogilvie (Yr 9), Charlotte Harman (Yr 9) and Lilly Dijkstra (Yr 9) who took the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Moving into the School Girl Yr 9 Coxed Quad, the combination of Audra Olson (Yr 9), Amber Williams (Yr 9), Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9), Sophia Maxwell (Yr 9) and cox Lucy Horton (Yr 8) finished a close 3rd in the A Final while in the C Final the combination of Charlotte Harman (Yr 9), Mia Kloiser-Jones (Yr 9), Lilly Dijkstra (Yr 9), Blythe Ogilvie (Yr 9) and cox Ema Yasumura (Yr 9) finished 1st.

The Yr 9 Boys performed well in their small boat combinations with both the combinations of William Thomas (Yr 9) and Jack Walsh (Yr 9) racing in Div 1 and Oliver Hoey (Yr 9) and Aaron Drake (Yr 9) racing in Div 2 finishing in 3rd, taking the bronze medal home.

The Yr 8 students are limited in racing opportunities compared to older Year Groups, however the Girls combinations of Issy Treloar, Briar Carter, Charlotte Scamps, Caterina Croll and cox Lucy Horton won bronze in the A Final of School Girl Yr 8 Coxed Quad, meanwhile in the C Final of this same event Zoe Naismith, Aysha Sayan, Erin Tyrrell, Alana Mansfield and their cox Camille Ghenzer finished in 2nd place. The Yr 8 Boys raced well in the School Boy Yr 8 Coxed Quad with the combination of Patrick Walker, Matthew Fry, Daniel Close, Finn Woodward and cox Charlotte Morrison being narrowly pipped at the post but finishing in 2nd place within the A Final while in the C Final the combination of Mitch Turner, Sam Chubb, Harley van der Pluijm and Xavier Reid coxed by Maya Little also finished in 2nd place.

We cannot thank enough the generous support from our families, led by the Friends of Rowing committee, who ensure that our students were well catered for with ample food throughout the day.

This weekend our rowers will have training at Mosman Rowing Club. This is our last training weekend prior to both the NSW Girls Head of the River on Saturday 16 March with the NSW Boys Head of the River Regatta held the following day on Sunday 17 March. As part of this final training session, the Friends of Rowing committee will be providing a breakfast for our rowers. Training times for this have already been communicated to all students and families.

We will also be taking the crew photos as part of this training session, meaning that full Rowing uniform is expected to be worn by all of our students.

Lastly, the Rowing Presentation Dinner is to be held on Thursday 4 April at Sergeants Mess from 6.30 – 9.30pm. This is a fully ticketed event so please book tickets here

Sailing

With only one week of training left for the Redlands Sailing program, the sailors have begun to put their skills into practice as they prepare for the NSW Teams Racing Championships in April. With competition heating up between the schools, only 12 sailors will be selected to compete at the event. Last weekend the squad began to compete in an in-house competition with sailors competing on both Elliott 7s keelboats and the Pacer dinghies to determine who will be selected to compete at the Championships. The sailors will continue to race in the selection competition this Saturday at their final training session for the season.

The Redlands Sailing End of Season Function will be held this Saturday 9 March from 12.00-2.00pm with a BBQ lunch provided. Parents are also invited to watch the training session on a Squadron vessel.

Touch Football

Over the weekend three teams from Redlands travelled out to St Paul’s Grammar to play in the Semi Finals/Grand Finals of the 2019 ISA Touch Football Competition. To see two of our Junior teams, along with our 1st VI, qualify for the Finals goes someway to highlight how hard these girls have worked through the season, not only developing as individual players but also building together as cohesive squads.

Our Junior Cs came up against the undefeated SACS Junior A side, a team that has not won by less than 5-0 for the whole season. Our Junior Cs played so far above themselves, lifting as a group and defending like their lives depended on it. Lily Attard was incredible, constantly on attack and everywhere on defence. I cannot wait to see Lily approach her next Touch Football season with this same attitude, pressing for higher honours in the program. This whole team lifted against such a strong opponent going into halftime down 2-0, the efforts of Marie Kruzrock, Anna Ivanovic and Iona Carter in defence holding the team together. Ultimately this amazing team, made up of our youngest Yr 7s and a wonderfully tight group of Yr 9s went down, SACS eventually winning the entire competition. Nothing should distract from how amazing this teams development has been, their improvement each week at training and during their matches being second to none.

Our Junior As narrowly lost, going down in extra time in a nail-biting match against BMGS, the game eventually going to triple extra time. Whilst this game was a bitter way to finish the season for our A side it does not take anything away from what an amazing season these girls have had. Seeing the way this team has gelled together as a group has been the most rewarding part of the season, seeing girls like Emma Mahon and Katie Wightwick, girls who were completely new to the sport, become vital players within the squad. Led by Sophia Hill and Piper Allen all season, these two girls controlled our attack brilliantly, allowing players like Ruby Kelly and Callie Forest to run amok in attack. I cannot wait to see these players continue in this sport, some staying in the Juniors for next season whilst others will hopefully push for top senior sides.

Our 1st VI came up against Barker, a tough task playing against such an experienced team. Our girls aimed up, Caitlin Du Plooy weaving her way through on attack, supported brilliantly by Caroline Bates out wide, the team moving up the field consistently against the solid defence of Barker. The opposition had some amazing players, able to throw long passes across our defence and put runners into space. The defensive efforts of our girls was amazing, turning the opposition back time and time again, girls like Lulu Simpson and Ruby Brook throwing themselves around in defence. At halftime the girls went into the break down 2-1, their try coming from some wonderful lead up work from Sydney Stuckmann and Caitlin leading to Anna McCormack running beautifully into space for the try. In the second half, the weight of all the effort in defence started to show as Barker began to build so much pressure in attack, eventually cracking our line for two quick tries. It was a credit to the Redlands girls that they stuck in it, scoring another well worked try. This team, for their first year in the competition, has punched so far above their weight. The efforts of their Captain Caitlin Du Plooy along with the Redlands Sports Captain Sydney Stuckmann, has been amazing to watch and I cannot wait to see what this team can achieve in the next season.

HICES Swimming Carnival

Our Redlands team took on the best of HICES in the pool last Wednesday and showed what a great fighting spirit our Swimming team has. Despite being newly upgraded to the highest division in HICES Swimming, our team members weren’t overawed and showed real tenacity and the joy of representing Redlands to finish a very credible fifth overall in Div 1. So many of our swimmers swam PBs, a great many in their first Redlands Swimming team. Luka Gordon and Lachlan Svensson led the way, swimming big programs and showing great resolve to place across the whole range of their events.

NSWCIS Red Award

2018 Sports Captain Jasmine Black was awarded with the coveted Red Award from NSWCIS. Reds are awarded to primary students who perform at an exceptional level at the SSA Championships (School Sport Australia) and there are generally only two of these prestigious awards presented per gender per sport in any year to students.

These were the words from the presenter to Jasmine in describing her recognition for the award:

At 2018 CIS Trails Jasmine stood out as capable and confident in goals –  making her an easy selection to the team. After a year’s experience, it was clear that Jasmine was a natural leader in this team. She was barking out instructions, encouraging her teammates and promoting solid play from the goal box.

At the PSSA Championships, Jasmine’s skill as a keeper was put to the test and she made some great saves throughout the tournament which kept the CIS team in the game. She displayed a cool, calm and collected nature as she played the ball forward and Jasmine was an amazing asset to the CIS team, a fact that did not escape the NSW PSSA selectors.

At the School Sport Australia Championships, Jasmine continued to perform well, capable of both reading and redirecting play from the goal and her ability to remain clear headed and calm as the last line of defence is impressive for someone so young. Jasmine took all advice on board and was always willing to learn and she only conceded three goals during the six day National Tournament, assisting her team to the silver medal. With glowing reports from the CIS and PSSA levels, there were indications that Jasmine has a future career in Football if she wishes to pursue it.

Serious praise from some elite level coaches for one of our great athletes of 2018.

IPSHA Sports

IPSHA matches continue this weekend. All matches, times and venues are as per the original draw.

Basketball

Yrs 5 and 6 basketballers continued their winning ways last week and even with a bye drawn for our A and B teams, the scrimmage match between the two squads was electric. Players very maturely self elected even teams on paper and played a really high level match under exact match conditions in Dunnet Hall to a nail-biting finish. Just three points in the final result, it could have gone either way and was indeed a great spectacle. Our C, D, E and F teams all had emphatic victories over St Aloysius and Sydney Grammar Edgecliff teams. The Redlands Junior School Basketball juggernaut rolls on.

Our Yr 4 teams will have a grading evening on 15 March from 4.30 -6.30pm, where they’ll play a series of brief modified games to give organisers an idea for grading.

NetSetGo and 10-12 yrs players are invited by NSNA to attend a clinic run by Premier League franchise North Shore United.

Equestrian

Ruby Holgate from Yr 6 will swap her basketball shoes for riding boots this weekend after being accepted as an entrant into the NSW Interschool Equestrian Competition. Ruby (pictured here in training) will compete in the EVA 60 Eventing, comprising Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country. Her nomination was accepted after fantastic results in the lead up competitions. I can’t wait to see more shots and hear further news.
