Issue 5 2024 Term 1 Week 5 - 29 Feb 2024

From the Principal

As the calendar flips from February to March (with an extra day of February thrown in), summer transitions to autumn (although it certainly still feels like summer today) and we come to the halfway point of Term 1, I thought it would be a good opportunity to reflect on the year to date by sharing some of my highlights of the past week.

Academically, students are deeply engaging in their learning and this was best illustrated at our Year 12 HSC and IB Breakfast last week where our current Year 12 students were given the road map of their studies for the year ahead with the approaches and supports the School puts in place to best assist them in achieving their personal bests.

Cocurricular activities are in full swing across the School. This weekend was the last regular season round of Secondary School ISA Sports fixtures, and I am pleased to report that my 17A Basketball team won their last regular season game of the season! I also attended the NSW Boys Head of the River Rowing Regatta on Sunday and while it was great to see our rowers competing at this level on Sunday, what struck me most from getting around to the Rowing and other weekend sports fixtures was the conversations I had with Year 12 students who reflected, sometimes quite emotionally, about how much competing for the School has meant to them after finishing their last game or race.

On Wednesday, I also enjoyed singing along in the Secondary School Choir rehearsal and I know our performing arts students are getting excited for the many upcoming events such as Jazz in the Garden, the School Musical, Theatresports Competitions, Instrumental Competition, Shakespeare Under the Stars and the Junior School Red Factor.

It is wonderful to continue to see our strong parent engagement across the School and I had the great pleasure of meeting some new families to Redlands at our Year 7 Meet and Greet on Monday evening who shared their positive experiences of Redlands to date.

Pleasingly, our values continue to underpin everything we do, and this was best illustrated in the Prep School Assembly on Tuesday where 2B and 2Y shared their reflections on the importance of respect with students and staff at the assembly.

I have also been impressed by the leadership our students have been displaying across the School both in formal and informal contexts. On Wednesday I had the opportunity to share insights on leadership with our Secondary School student leaders and hearing their ideas, aspirations and reflections to date certainly instils confidence in me for the year ahead.

Finally, if our Junior School Swimming Carnival was a barometer, our school spirit continues to shine as students not only had a great day competing in their races but also chanting, singing and dancing for their Houses in the stands.

So, if this small snapshot is any indication, I think we have had a great start to the year.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Community Update

It was lovely to welcome our Year 7 parents and carers at our Meet and Greet event held earlier this week on Fahl Garden. This event provided a terrific opportunity for our parents and carers to hear from our School and Year group leaders and to connect with our teaching and support staff along with other parents and carers of Year 7 students.

We are delighted to invite students, parents, carers and friends to our inaugural Count Her In International Women’s Day Breakfast here Redlands. Two incredible leaders and changemakers (The Hon. Bronnie Taylor – Deputy Leader of the NSW Nationals, Member of the NSW Legislative Council and Vicki Condon AM – Founder, CEO, Executive Director of Raise Foundation) will discuss their commitment to the creation of opportunities for women to earn, learn and lead. Tickets available here.

As we continue to transition to the new uniform, a Second Hand Uniform Sale of our old uniform will be held on Thursday 7 March at the Redlands Parent and Friends Association (RPFA) headquarters at 1 Monford Place. My thanks to the army of volunteers, led by the RPFA and Uniform Shop, for their assistance in delivering this important event. Clean pre-loved uniforms can be donated through the Uniform Shop. Proceeds from the sale will be dedicated towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund and more detail can be found in the RPFA section of today’s Note Day.

A reminder that an exclusive opportunity exists for our parent and alumni community to experience an extraordinary program on country through our Redlands Midawarr Trip in May this year. This is quite literally a once in a lifetime experience to deeply explore miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival.

Our Principal, Mr Sean Corcoran will be joining our parents and alumni on this trip, sharing this unique experience with our community. Gather a group of friends, a friend or join the wider group for this once in a lifetime experience not to be missed. Places on this exclusive trip can now be reserved by competing a booking form which can be accessed here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly or the wider Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Year 12 Legacy Gift

It was exciting to kick off the Legacy Gift of the Class of 2024 to launch this year’s student led initiative focused on the importance of ‘Giving Back’ to the School. It was terrific to see such passion with a focus on continuing the tradition of supporting the sixth Redlands Means-tested Scholarship named after Coralie Amos OAM, RL 1964. Coralie has lived her life with selfless concern for the wellbeing of others, illuminating the way for many people including those here at Redlands. Coralie was Sports Captain of McDouall and Captain of Tennis. For all her efforts she was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for Community Service in 2021.

When we asked students  “What inspired you to join this team and how is this project relevant to you and to Redlands?”, it was heart-warming to hear reflections on the many opportunities they gained at Redlands, from academic learning, performing arts and music, theatre and drama and the high level of support from their teachers.

We look forward to bring more details about all the initiatives planned.

Camps in High Country Campus

This year’s Year 7 braved the elements this term on what is for some of them, their first but not last, Redlands camp. High Country Campus has been a home for this camp for many years. In 1981, the first group of Year 7 students camped in Jindabyne, and in 1997, the first Year 7 cohort camped at High Country Campus.

The Redlands High Country Campus outside Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains region offers the greatest array of possibilities for both curriculum fieldwork and experiential learning. The campus is utilised for both outdoor education camps and also our Winter School, which offers Year 10 students a unique opportunity to combine their studies with Snowsports training.

The tradition of overnight excursions has been part of Redlands life since the early 1900s.

With the formation of two Guide troops at the School in 1922, just over 100 years ago, camp taught students valuable life skills which many carried through their lives after school.

To learn more how to support our efforts to expand our extraordinary High Country Campus, please contact me directly or visit HERE.

Postcard from Jessica Wei, RL 2022

It was fantastic to receive an update from Jessica Wei’s family, sharing some of her exciting experiences at Oxford University. We congratulate Jessica on receiving the Collection Prize from her College Master which recognises outstanding academic performance. While at Redlands, Jessica graduated as Dux IB (shared), received a Prefect Award and full colours for Advanced Choir and Senior Piano Ensemble.

Jessica was stage director for the Oxford Spring Festival Gala, coordinating the production and ensuring the delivery of a successful three-hour show. This is a testament to her technical skills, outstanding teamwork and leadership which impressed the organisers and the production company. Feature: Lantern Festival extends Spring Festival joy across Europe (xinhuaxmt.com)

She offered to support any Redlands students who are considering study abroad for their tertiary education. Please contact alumni@redlands.nsw.edu.au to get in touch with Jessica.

Redlands Parents and Friends

Promoting Sustainability: Reducing, Reusing and Recycling Old Uniforms

Our children are passionate about protecting the environment and in Redlands classrooms, they continuously learn new ways to create a more sustainable world. For many years, the RPFA has been a key player in supporting that passion, collaborating with the school to implement uniform recycling programs as a means to reduce waste, and promote reuse and recycling. As we embark on the two-year changeover to the new uniform, the RPFA is once again stepping up to bolster the School’s endeavours toward more sustainable practices during the transition, and to lead by example for our children.

Old uniforms that the RPFA has collected will go on sale Thurs 7 March at 8am-10:30am at the RPFA unit, 1 Monford Place (just around the corner from the school uniform shop on Military Road).

Not only does the second-hand uniform sale minimise landfill, but all proceeds go towards the means-tested scholarship fund.

Please donate!! We are still collecting donations for the sale. We would love to receive second hand uniforms which are clean, good quality (something you would be happy to buy) and  part of the current uniform.

Donations can be dropped at the Uniform Shop on Military Road any day except Tuesdays when the shop is closed. Please, no socks, no swimmers and no brands which are not sold by the Uniform Shop eg. M&S, Next.

The school’s Sustainability team will continue to collect old uniforms including those not suitable for resale for the recycling program in Week 7. Please check the Community Engagement section of Note Day for more information.

Coming Up

Wed 27 March at St Peter’s Cremorne at 7.30am. In the lead up to Easter, we invite you all to the Redlands Community Easter Reflection. A light breakfast will be provided (maybe including some Easter eggs). Prep and JS parents are welcome to bring their children.

And, for all the party-goers among us, details are in the works for our next community event to celebrate 140 years of Redlands. Friendship bands optional. Stay tuned.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by Ann Marie, a wonderful RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks, look for the ???? below .

Walks are roughly 1 1/2- 2 hours and for those with the time we love to stop for a coffee afterwards. Yesterday, a great group met at the Woolwich Pier Hotel for a walk around Hunters Hill. What a nice start to the day.

We have planned all the walks for the term so mark your calendars.  Next three shared here:

  • Wed 6 March: Shelly Beach to Curly. Meet at Shelly Beach carpark for an 8.40am departure. ????
  • Wed 13 March: Beauty Point. Meet at Orso carpark Spit Bridge for an 8.40am departure.????
  • Wed 20 March: Waverton to Wollstonecraft. Meet at Coal Loader, Balls Head Dr Waverton for a 8.40 departure. ????

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie on 0406 691 533.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

  • Next month we will be discussing The God of No Good by Sita Walker. The meeting is expected to be in the second half of March as an evening session. Stay tuned here for the date.

Behind the Scenes with RPFA: Meet your RPFA Committee

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) is a group of committed parents who support the broad activities of the School’s diverse community. The RPFA is your first point of contact for Redlands community events or support. Check back here each week to meet 2024 committee members and be inspired to get involved.

RPFA Five with Monika

Name: Monika Crennan
Role: RPFA Committee Member
Kiddos: Isabella (Yr 11) Aurora (Yr 9) and Amelie (Yr 2 at the local school)

If you could choose a RPFA theme song (or super hero), what would be the title name?

Shake it off – Taylor Swift

Why did you decide to join the RPFA, and what do you love most about it?

I have always been involved as a volunteer in different areas during my kids’ school years – class parent, reading support, Primary Ethics teacher, events, fundraising and as a year rep for the last three years. To be able to support the School at this level is an amazing opportunity. To get be at the centre and work with ideas, future plans and the staff. I love the connections and friends that I have made and the results we are getting as a great team.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the School?

Look into the area that interests you – support as a volunteer in sports or the arts through the Friends of Groups. Join the coffee mornings to find out what is happening in your year and join other year parents to volunteer with. I will always recommend to become a year rep or class parent.

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

The Drama program  -such talented teachers and amazing curriculum. The variety of opportunities in this craft would be great to be a part of.

Year 12 Students Learning Directly from Talented Alumni

Year 12 2023 students Briar Carter, Charlotte Morrison and Samantha Hely spoke to Year 12 HSC Students this week in Core. Their messages centred around effective note-taking managing the demands of examinations and how to breakdown English exam papers. They emphasised the importance of sharing notes and studying together, particularly when you’re struggling with a concept or a particular text. Students also learnt that there is no one way to make notes! There are lots of different ways and the important thing is to experiment and establish what works for them. Year 11 HSC will have a similar session in their Core lesson next week. As always, slides are shared to the HSC Core iLearn pages for students to access and review.

Summer Sport Season is Coming to a Close and We Celebrate so Many Achievements!

Our Rowing students have been kept busy all season and their hard work and effort has culminated in their participation in the season’s largest popular regattas over the past few weekends. The ACT Championships and the Head of the Lake Regatta over the weekend of 17 and 18 February and the NSW Boys Head of the River on Sunday 25 February. We wish our female rowers all the best for the NSW Girls Had of the River this Sunday 3 March. The following photos were superbly shot by our fabulous Year 10 photographer extraordinaire Scarlett Giddings.

Our Sailing students competed at the ACT Sailing Championships last weekend with 12 students competing –  Team A finishing 2nd (Overall) and 1st (Mixed/Co-Ed) with Team B finishing 11th (Overall) and 6th (Mixed/Co-Ed).

Year 8 student, Lauren Rolfe, was selected into the NSWCIS Softball Team.

Year 12 student Isaac Swann and Year 11 student Lauren Dover competed at the NSWCIS Tennis Championships on Tuesday this week also.

On Friday night, our Head of Sport, Mr Cameron Ellis attended the CIS Awards Ceremony. The dinner is a night dedicated to celebrating the 2023 CIS Sporting Season (both individual and teams). Redlands featured heavily throughout the night. A few sportspeople to feature are:

  • Heidi de Saxe (Yr 10) – Awarded NSWCIS Blue Colours with Honours (AFL)
  • Lachlan Price-Pontifex (Yr 10) – Awarded NSWCIS Blue Colours (AFL)
  • Emilie Bessell (Redlander 2023) – Awarded NSWCIS Blue Colours (Basketball)

Lachlan Price-Pontifex (Yr 10) and Oscar Carlyon (Yr 10) were also part of the NSWCIS Secondary School Team of the Year which was awarded to the NSWCIS U15 Boys AFL Team.

Illuminate Scholars Program

The first week of our Illuminate Scholars Program has gone well. Our Independent Learning Coordinators Grace Bracks (Monday and Tuesday) and Lilli O’Driscoll (Wednesday and Thursday) have been getting to know our merry band of studiers, who have been preparing for Mathematics tests, English and History assessments and getting to grips with the IB TOK (Theory of Knowledge) Course.

Term Passes and Day Passes are available on the Illuminate Pulse Page.

Clean up Australia Day

On Sunday, Redlands students and families are encouraged to head to St Leonards Park to participate in Clean Up Australia Day. Redlands will be cleaning up the park from 9-11 and will be meeting at the Tunks Memorial Fountain. Please note – this is an unsupervised event.

Uniform Recycling takes place in Week 7

Textile Recyclers Australia (TRA) has been selected as our uniform recycling partner following a comprehensive review of available options in 2023. TRA will commence the collection of unwanted Redlands uniforms in Week 7 of Term 1, with each Year Group having a specific day to bring in their unwanted Redlands uniforms, listed on the poster above. Bin collections will be monitored, so please ensure only the requested Redlands items in the poster above are brought it, or they will be sent back home. Any non-Redlands branded uniforms can be taken to your local charity bin for reuse, or to H&M and Zara (who offer used clothing recycling).

Love Everyone – those who are easy to love and those who are different from us or hard to love

Year 9 students in Tutor Group 9O led Chapel this week. They looked at a letter John wrote to encourage us to hope and act in love.  Central to his message is the ideas that we should love one another, as this is how we reflect God’s love on earth. This is one of the two great commandments Jesus gave his followers. But who should we love? Well, the answer is everyone, both those like us and are easy to love, but also those who are different from us and are hard to love.

Year 9 student Felix Elwin led his peers in a reflective game designed to provoke understanding and empathy. It was a wonderful Chapel service, highlighting the strength of our School community and depth of spiritual understanding. Tom Beatty also delivered a talk to his peers which was a real ‘step beyond’ moment for him – he was very well received!

Here are some stills of the service led by students.

Online Safety – Parents, please be aware of the following, when checking your teenager’s phone

Know what the following emojis, emoticons and acronyms mean in the online space

Please find here an article written by the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) urging parents to understand the implied meanings in some Emojis and acronyms used online.

The article is really informative and offers helpful guidance to parents around having honest and open conversations their children. This could help prevent children falling victims to predators, many who pretend to be children or teens.

“That’s why having a healthy dialogue with your children is the best defence you can have.”

Please refer to our Digital Citizenship & Safety Page on Pulse.

Top tips for parents and carers

  • Keep your child’s personal information including full name and age private;
  • Ensure the background of photos or videos doesn’t give away your address or location;
  • Don’t post your location or ‘check in’;
  • Avoid posting photos in school uniform;
  • Only share images of your children with people you know and trust;
  • Don’t take photos of other people’s children – and if you do, don’t post them;
  • For community accounts, consider having a closed group with approved members

and ensure you have strong privacy settings in place.

  • High effort is linked to achievement of personal excellence
  • Accept continual challenge – you will receive specific feedback, data on your progress as a student, Records of Academic Discussions (RADs) and parent support and communication

Last Friday also kickstarted the planning for the 2024 Legacy Gift team with a morning tea and information session along with planning time for students who have expressed interest in being involved in this special opportunity. The Legacy Gift team will be leading the planning, organising and fundraising contributing to a means-tested scholarship and another gift of their choice that they find meaningful to them and the School. This gift is a way for students to give back to the Redlands community and to support opportunities for future Redlands students. Thank you to the students who have put their hand up to lead the planning and to be the representatives for their peers in this process. Thank you to the Canteen staff, Property Services and the Foundation team for coordinating efforts for this event and a special thank you to Dana Casimaty, Director of Development, who continues to work with the student team throughout this process.

Year 11

Feature of the Week – Rowing

“At Redlands, Rowing is a representative sport that is offered as part of the summer season; with 6 sessions per week. it is considered to be a high commitment sport within the senior program (Years 10-12). Our training consists of morning water sessions at 5:20am, as well as land training sessions in the afternoon, which consist of ergs and strength and conditioning in the gym, as well as our Saturday trainings starting at 5:45am with a water session.

As a school, our most competitive boats are coxed quad sculls also known as SB and SG 4x+ events, as well as competing in small boat events such as single sculls (1x) and double sculls (2x). Over the season through September to February, our senior program has seen a great amount of progress and success, especially as we head into what is considered to be our biggest regattas, Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Head of the River (HOTR).”

Year 10

Rowing in Yr 10

Redlands offers a multitude of Summer Sports, with Rowing emerging as a prominent choice this season. Rowing demands dedication and commitment, with student athletes spending hours on the water meticulously propelling their oars through each stroke to improve their performance session after session. A significant cohort of Yr 10 Rowers demonstrates their passion and endurance by participating in this challenging sport each week. These skills culminate in impressive displays at the numerous regattas they compete in throughout the season.

“This season in Rowing has been one of my favourites. The amount of grit and perseverance I have seen especially in the young Rowers has been admirable. I have repeatedly witnessed the losses of both junior and senior crews, but in true Redlands spirit, we have always kept going, kept fighting, kept rowing.

Rowing is not an easy sport, if it were everyone would do it. But for those willing to put in the effort, they get a much greater reward; a family. I have made so many friends since I started Rowing in Yr 6, we have gone through heaven and hell together, and I will forever remember the time I spend with them.”

                                                                                                                                                           – Katie Budden, Yr 10

On the weekend of 17/18 Feb the Redlands Rowing Program raced at the ACT Head of the Lake in Canberra. The Yr 10 rowers achieved a number of great results and earned a large collection of medals, which will be presented at our next year assembly. A special congratulations goes to the following Yr 10 students who placed as medalists:

The Double Meaning of Emojis and Acronyms

Please find here an article written by the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) urging parents to understand the double meaning of Emojis and acronyms.

It is really informative and offers some guidance around having honest and open conversations about what they communicate, and what is being communicated to them. This could help prevent them falling victims to predators, many who pretend to be children or teens.

“That’s why having a healthy dialogue with your children is the best defence you can have.”

Year 9

Student-led Chapel

Chapel offered 9O a time to shine last week with the class taking on the opportunity to lead the service. The students each took on a role to assist in planning and executing a chapel service centred around the theme of love. We heard what love looked like through the eyes of young people, from a puppy licking your face to a grandfather helping a grandmother paint her toenails. Felix Elwin did an excellent job at facilitating a game that highlighted our shared values, followed by Thomas Beatty who shared a beautifully crafted prayer about the meaning of love. Thank you to the Christian Studies department for kick-starting this initiative, and we look forward to seeing the rest of the Year 9 classes take charge of the Chapel space throughout the year.

Year 8

Week 5 – It’s Time to Thrive!

With one or two assessments already under their belt – Mathematics for all on Monday and Technology for some later in the week – Year 8 are certainly into the thick of their learning this year. They are building their capacity to organise their time and ensure diligent preparation for their assessments – utilising the lessons they gained around their 2023 End of Year Examinations. The week after camp is also a big one, with a range of elective language assessments, PDHPE practical and an English podcast assessment. With Yr 8 camp prefacing all of that, it will be important for students to get as much preparation work done prior to boarding that camp bus on Monday morning.

A great tool for students this year is certainly their student planner. It is a key place to keep track of their home learning, plan ahead for assessments and maintain valuable ‘to do’ lists for organisation; the planner also offers clear details to help students understand the School’s Code of Conduct, uniform requirements and other key policies. It is a critical resource that should never be far from a student’s hands!

Stepping Beyond

On Tuesday we had a jam-packed Stage 4 Student Leaders Assembly. There were some amazing dramatic performances from Arts Captains, Hallie and Sholto and some important announcements from our Service Captains, Antonia and William, about International Women’s Day and the important role this day plays in recognising the historical efforts to build equality between men and women, while also reflecting on the efforts which continue to be needed in this space. As part of this focus, a panel presented their views on the importance of International Women’s Day. Well done to Yr 8 students, Fergus and Liv, who were both part of this panel and each spoke eloquently and thoughtfully about the day and its significant meaning to them.

A hearty congratulations too to Ady Lee who was awarded the first Step Beyond award for Yr 8, in recognition of her excellent diligence, note taking and efforts in Mathematics so far this year. These awards are given by our student leadership team to students who are pushing themselves to be their best in academic or cocurricular pursuits in the school, and we look forward to seeing more worthy recipients as the year unfolds.

Yr 8 Camp in Week 6 – Key Details

With just a few days until Yr 8 camp, it is time to get excited and definitely time to get organised!

Today, in Tutor, students engaged in a range of thoughtful activities designed to prepare themselves for the challenges they will face on camp and to ensure they are on top of their organisation and packing for camp. They reviewed the packing list and talked about the activities they will engage in and how they can support their peers and themselves to have a great time. I am really looking forward to seeing Yr 8 step out of their regular routine and build their resilience and sense of adventure as they engage in the outdoor program.

Year 7

Year 7 Camp Reflection

Returning to school after our Year 7 Camp in Jindabyne is always a mix of emotions – excitement, nostalgia, and perhaps a touch of exhaustion from all the adventures. As students step back into the familiar halls of their school, they bring with them memories of bonding over campfires, conquering challenges and exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Jindabyne. The camp experience fosters a sense of camaraderie and resilience among classmates, strengthening friendships and creating lasting memories. While there’s a bittersweet feeling leaving behind the scenic beauty of our High Country Campus, there’s also a renewed energy to dive back into academic pursuits, armed with newfound confidence and a deeper sense of connection with peers. As the students settle back into school life, students carry with them the lessons learned and the bonds forged during their unforgettable time at camp, ready to take on whatever challenges lie ahead.

“The enjoyable experience was full of everlasting memories, fun and laughter.” Daisy Nassar

A huge thank you to everyone who made our Y7 Camp a success.

Routines

As we all settle back into life in Sydney, we might need to take some time to get used to our daily routines. Routines act as guiding lights, offering stability and structure to our school life. For students, having a routine means knowing what to expect each day, which can help reduce stress and improve time management skills. It also fosters habits that support learning and personal growth. As for parents, encouraging and supporting these routines helps instill independence and responsibility in their children while creating a nurturing environment for academic progress.

So, let’s embrace routines together and pave the way for a smooth and successful Secondary School experience.

Step Beyond

Well done to Owen Beck and Millicent Kroon who received a Yr 12 Step Beyond award at this week’s stage assembly.

Burn Bright Incursion – Thursday 7 March

We are very fortunate to be part of a Burn Bright workshop next week. Burn Bright is dedicated to illuminating the potential within every student. Through innovative programs and workshops, Burn Bright aims to empower young people to discover their passions, build resilience and cultivate essential life skills. With a focus on character development and personal growth, this company offers a range of interactive experiences designed to inspire confidence and foster positive relationships within school communities. By harnessing the power of storytelling, experiential learning, and mentorship, Burn Bright equips students with the tools they need to navigate challenges, embrace opportunities and ultimately, shine brightly both inside and outside the classroom. We can’t wait to learn more next week.

Head of Junior School

Swimming Carnival

There are a number of special occasions in the school year and the annual Swimming Carnival is certainly one of these. So yesterday I was delighted to witness a genuine sense of House spirit and camaraderie between the students at the Redlands Junior School Swimming Carnival. I was also impressed with the wiliness of  students to participate in races and events with enthusiasm, even if swimming is necessarily not their preferred activity. Equally impressive were the performances of many of our talented swimmers. For further information please see the Junior Sport section in this week’s Note Day. I acknowledge and am grateful to the sport department, staff and coaches involved in every aspect of the carnival which allows an event to run as smoothly and as efficiently as it did. I also thank parents for your support at the carnival. And finally special congratulations go to Roseby House who won the overall trophy.

The Power of Please and Thank You!

I am sure that we have all heard the expression ‘it costs nothing to say please or thank you’ to another person to show gratitude or humility when wanting something.

At their core, manners are simply about caring for others. Teaching good manners requires patience, persistence and practice, but it’s worth the effort. Manners provide valuable lessons in consideration, gratitude and most of all, respect. Respect as we all know is one of Redlands value that we discuss and navigate a lot in the Prep school. We hold it close to our hearts as it drives our interactions with each other and sets the climate for friendships to grow and interactions between student and adult to flourish.

With this said, it has come to the attention of the Prep staff that simple manners in the Prep have been disappointing lately and as a result have caused us to stop and look at ways in which we can all work together to improve the standard. We often discuss with the children the power of words and the impact that negative words can have on people and situations, the same goes for the power of using basic manners when interacting with others.

As a staff we will be introducing some fun and rewarding ways to help model and remind our student to use simple manners during the day. Of course, modelling a desired behaviour to children is a great way for it to become an embedded trait so we encourage families to join us in doing this by ‘going overboard’ for a while with modelling manners at home with your child! This process needs practice and repetition so hang in there if you get a bit of push back when your child is corrected or doesn’t get given what they want immediately, this is normal and remember that by helping them understand the importance of using manners, this will be helping them in the long run with developing healthy respectful relationships.

Daily Routine Reminders

Post 8.20am arrival

We ask all parents to please say goodbye to their children and exit the campus when the 8.15am morning bell rings. Our students line up in their classes and head straight to the classrooms to start learning.

If your child arrives after 8.20am, please alert Ms Pontes on arrival and she will adjust their absent status and take them to their classroom. We ask that parents do not go to the classrooms to drop children off after 8.20am as it disrupts the morning routine that has already started. As it is now Week 5, we encourage our prep students to demonstrate greater independence and resilience to walk either by themselves or with Ms Pontes.

Possibility of a Sibling Carline

Community voice is important to us at Redlands so we would like to hear from Prep families who would consider using a K-6 Sibling Carlinein the afternoons. Logistics and staffing will need to be organised, but the general idea is for any Prep students accessing the sibling carline be collected and wait in Prep until 3.10pm where they will be walked up to the Junior School, meet their older sibling, and together use the Junior School carline.

To provide us with an idea of how many families would access a K-6 Sibling Carline, please fill in the form below. This will be open for a two-week period. The data will provide us with a direction as to whether we proceed with this arrangement for a term 2 start.

Secondary Sport

As we move into the Summer Sport final weeks it is important to remind all that whilst playing our sports we are adhering to the values of sportsmanship and respect for several crucial reasons. Embracing sportsmanship fosters a positive team culture, enhancing teamwork and communication. In the intensity of finals, mutual respect among teammates creates a supportive environment, boosting morale and performance. Respecting opponents is equally vital. It instills integrity and fair play, promoting healthy competition. In finals, where emotions run high, maintaining respect prevents conflicts and ensures the focus remains on the game. It sets an example for both teammates and the broader sports community.

Showing respect towards officials is paramount. Finals often involve high stakes, and officials play a crucial role in maintaining fairness. Demonstrating respect towards referees and judges reflects maturity and helps maintain a constructive relationship, reducing the likelihood of disputes.

A priority for Redlands Sport is to maintain sportsmanship in all our young athletes due to its enduring benefits. Beyond the sporting arena, these values contribute to character development. Respect, fair play, and teamwork instilled during formative years translate into essential life skills. In professional settings, individuals with a foundation in sportsmanship are more likely to excel in collaboration, leadership, and handling adversity. Moreover, ethical conduct learned in sports becomes a cornerstone for building relationships, fostering resilience, and navigating challenges throughout their lives

“There is no way around hard work. Embrace it. You have to put in the hours because there’s always something which you can improve. ”

NSW Boys Head of the River

For photos of the event, taken by Zach Borness (Yr 11), please follow this link.

Last weekend our boys raced at the NSW Boys Head of the River regatta with some fantastic results, finishing 5th overall on the medal table with 2 x Gold, 1 x Silver and 2 x Bronze medal winning crews.

Tom Hooper has continued to improve throughout the season which he displayed with a very impressive Silver Medal in the School Boy Year 10 Single Scull while Connor Morrison also progressed to the A Final with a 6th place finish in the same race.

The Year 8 1st Boys crew of Fergus Kerr, Christopher Feros, Cooper MacDonald, Ruairi MacLochlainn and coxswain Arav Basu raced well, progressing in strong form from the Heat through to the final but were painstakingly close to a Bronze medal, ultimately finishing 4th by 1 metre. Later Cooper MacDonald and Ruairi MacLochlainn combined for the School Boys Year 8 Double Scull to win Gold.

The Year 10 crews closed out the day with a flurry of medal winning performances with all four crews putting together some of their best races of the season. The Year 10 Boys 1st crew racing in Division 1 consisting of Thomas Hooper, Archer Kerr, Connor Morrison, Oscar Pearce and coxswain Henry Preece won Bronze. Also winning Bronze was the Year 10 Boys 3rd crew racing in Division 3 consisting of Matthew McLellan, James Foley, James Collyer, Lachlan and coxswain Anoushka Lee with our Year 10 Boys 4th crew also in this final finishing 5th.

The Year 10 Boys 2nd crew racing in Division 2 consisting of Kieran Newman, John Natilli, Toby Anderson, Henry Dobson and coxswain Lilian Chen stole the show with a strong performance winning them a comfortable Gold.

Well done to all of the students and coaches from the boys program on a wonderful season. We wish our girls the best of luck at their Head of the River regatta to be held this weekend.

Sailing

From Ali B – Sailing captain

ACT Teams Racing States 2024

This year Redlands sent two teams down to Canberra with a total of 12 sailors. Every crew sailed exceptionally and showed great success throughout the event. This regatta also provided us with a great deal of time to build on our teamwork, communication, and connection from almost five hours of postponed racing across the weekend and a great team dinner on Saturday night.

Canberra really put on the weather for us with both days presenting gusts up to 15 knots and beautiful sunny skies, putting our teams right in their element. Team A and B both competed outstandingly against sailors from 15 other schools and even some university and open teams, with Team A achieving Redlands’ best result in the history of our participation in Canberra, scoring 2nd place overall and 1st co-ed/mixed team, winning 7 out of 10 wins only one win behind first place. Team B also did very well, placing 11th overall and 6th co-ed/mixed team, a great achievement, with this event being many of our sailors’ first regatta.

I’d like to say a big thank you to all parents, carers, coaches and staff who made our participation at this event possible and supported our success down in Canberra.

Good luck to sailors competing again this weekend in Pittwater at the Pittwater Secondary Schools Teams Racing Regatta and to Max Nicholson at Sabre State Championships.

Junior Sport

Our annual Junior School Swimming Carnival took place at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre yesterday much to the delight of our Year 3 students, as this was their first carnival for the Junior School. Our first House meetings on the oval on Tuesday gave our House Captains the first opportunity to address their ‘troops’ and set the tone for the carnival ahead. With the Swimming Carnival the first of our big 3 carnivals, there was much excitement leading up to the first race, our youngest swimmers being the Under 8s and Under 9s 25m and 50m Freestyle event.

Knowing the carnivals can be long for spectators, children and adults in the stands were kept entertained by some dancing competitions with various playlists. It was great to see our war cry competitions were back again in full voice after their return last year. This year we continued with a separate House spirit trophy that was presented to the winning house on the day. This trophy as well as certificates handed out by the House Captains will continue across all our carnivals for recognition related to non-performance-based results.

While our Swimming Carnival embodies these many cherished traditions of primary school swimming carnivals, it’s dual purpose is also serves as a selection carnival, determining the Redlands team for the upcoming HICES Swim Championships. We congratulate these students and wish them the best of luck. The team will be notified in due course.

With the continuation of the entrant number system this year we can track the participation rate of all Houses as well as being able to provide feedback to students across their age groups in the strokes they entered.

The class relays in the 25m pool, organised by the teachers and in some cases the students themselves proved to be a hit with some fierce rivalry between the classes. Thank you to the parents and families who attended who travelled out Homebush to support the carnival as well as our House and Sport Captains for whom this was their first carnival as leaders at an all-day event.

Congratulations to Roseby House who won the House cup. Congratulations to House Captains Camilla and Charlie, who led their team to victory and got to raise the cup in victory for 2024.

Winning House

  • 1st Place Roseby  1456 points
  • 2nd Place Cowper 1132 points
  • 3rd Place Dumolo 1103 points
  • 4th Place McDouall 818 points

Further to this, the winning House, Roseby will have their House banner displayed on the school oval for the next two weeks in recognition of their achievement for all student to see.

Representative Sports- Saturday morning match wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport inability to train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

We kick off with a chance to showcase all our new group and solo pieces at the RSL Anzac Village in Narrabeen. This special invitation is a wonderful way for Redlands Dance Academy students to give to the community, our hosts are very excited for our visit.

Following this event, we will be involved in IRBD, SPACE and Sydney Eisteddfod and the Senior Jazz Performer 2 will experience Light the Way.

The aim of Light the Way Dance Convention is to bring the industry together, to inspire and educate the next generation of Australian dancers. Students have a unique opportunity to join masterclasses taught by the greats in the industry and to perform at Australia’s newest state-of-the-art theatre Sydney Coliseum and the adjoining West HQ.

There are also some solo events coming up with students performing in the Joan and Monica Halliday and Isobel Anderson Awards, Australian Classical Challenge, AICD, Asian Grand Prix and the Contemporary Dance Open.

Please know that the most important aspect of these experiences is the process, so be consistent in your training and above all enjoy every moment of your learning.

Make sure to put all these dates into your diaries, exciting times ahead!

For Eisteddfod dates please see our EISTEDDFOD Pulse page.

Holiday Program | Intensive RAD Exam Preparation | 15 – 18 April 2024

Enhance your exam readiness with our RAD Exam Preparation workshops during the Easter holidays. Tailored for vocational students ranging from Intermediate Foundation to Advanced 2 levels, this two-day program provides a unique opportunity to delve into your syllabus.

Mobile Phones and Devices

Just a reminder to all students that the use of mobile devices on school grounds is prohibited unless being used in class as an educational tool. This includes Parkes Hall and the Adam Centre during Academy hours. Please keep devices in your school bags for the duration of your time at dance.

Redlands Pulse

For the most up to date information on “all things Dance” including how to contact us if your child is sick or will miss their dance class, please visit the DANCE ACADEMY Pulse  page.

Below is Year 7 ballerina Azina, showing us her arabesque whilst away on camp last week, proof you can dance just about anywhere! Well done Azina!

Ms Antonia was back at the Academy on Saturday (24 February), taking photos during our classes. This was organised to give the Academy a good supply of photos for advertising etc. but we thought it would be nice for parents to have the chance to look through the photos, in case your child has been captured in any of the shots. Photos are available to buy, $15 per shot.

Drama Logbooks

Alongside their class activities, every Drama student completes a logbook of their reflections and ideas. This year, students have been offered the opportunity to express themselves in any way they want. So far, we’ve seen podcasts, videos, posters, collages, murals, poems and all sorts of other creative responses. It’s great to see students taking up the opportunity to show what they know and flex their creative muscles. Below, you’ll see a couple of Year 9 students’ entries which took on a particularly striking visual appeal.

Drama and Theatre Extra Subjects Program
