Issue 5 2020 - 27 Feb 2020

From the Principal

What a wonderful evening last Friday night was for the Twilight in the Piazza event. Whilst the rain threatened and we moved location into Dunnet Hall, it certainly didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. My wife, Lynn and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting a wide range of parents, which only further reinforced people’s passion and support for the school community. My thanks to the RPFA and our Foundation staff team for their hard work in organising this event.

Parents’ enthusiasm and engagement with the School was also on display at the Year 7 Meet and Greet evening on Monday, which provided a wonderful opportunity for parents to connect with each other and their children’s teachers. It was pleasing to note how welcome new members of our community have been made to feel.

I have thoroughly enjoyed attending a range of lessons across the School. Last Friday I attended Dr Thanos’ Year 12 HSC Ancient History class and was impressed by the engagement of the class and the level of knowledge and enthusiasm displayed by the students towards the topic of Pompei and Herculaneum. Our Author in Residence in the Junior School, Jack Heath had Ms Axam’s Year 4 class eating out of his hand as he inspired them to write with creativity, poise and flair, using the art of suspense and surprise.

At our Secondary School Assembly this week we presented our new Approaches to Learning Awards, which recognise students who have made a significant improvement in their overall Effort Tracking Score. The awards were presented for improvement shown from the end of Term 2 to end of Term 4 2019. Whilst Mr Corcoran and I spoke with conviction about the importance of effort and application in all areas of life and, in particular, academic studies, I was most impressed by the messages conveyed by our Prefect speakers Alexander Coney and Maya Auld.

Congratulations to the following students who were presented with these awards:

Twilight in the Piazza

A wonderful Twilight in the Piazza evening was held last Friday as the Redlands community came together to welcome new parents and new Principal, Mr Stephen Webber. Greta Argyropoulos (Class of 2017) and Christopher Blundell (Class of 2013) and his saxophone quartet performed during the night and we were grateful for their fabulous musical entertainment. Thank you to the RPFA for organising this wonderful annual event in our social calendar.

If you attended, we would love to hear your feedback for the planning of future events. Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey. To view a gallery of images from the night, click here.

60 Years RPFA

It is 60 years since the Parents and Friends Association was established to support the Redlands.

Redlands parents have played a very important role at Redlands by volunteering within various areas of the School, organising Redlands Spring Fairs and supporting fundraising efforts for the Science Block, Redlands Hall, Lang Gym, High Country Campus and the Fitness Centre.

New Learning Hub Update

The New Learning Hub development has been progressing well and the facade has started to be unveiled from Monford Place. The access road on Monford Place has also been recently completed.

Time is running out if you wish to secure a family plaque to be acknowledged on the Donor Recognition Wall.

Purchase a family plaque

Plaques are of three different sizes based on donation value. The financial commitments have to be completed by 30 June 2020. Contributions will be dedicated to the final fit-out of this wonderful development.

Effort Assembly

On Tuesday our School Assembly focused on effort and the importance of students trying their best across all of their pursuits. Yr 12 Prefects Alexander Coney and Maya Auld shared some of their personal reflections about the importance of effort while our Principal, Mr Webber, also shared some of his reflections with the aim to “debunk some of the myths” surrounding ability versus effort. We also awarded our first Approaches to Learning awards, recognising students across Yrs 8-12 who showed significant improvement in their Effort Tracking scores over Semester 2 2019.

I spoke to the students about the “Iceberg Illusion” which Ms Shaw has previously shown. Many times, we often recognise and reward the successes at the tip of the iceberg, that everyone can see. However, in doing so, it might seem that we are not recognising or acknowledging everything that occurs below the surface – the persistence, the sacrifices, the failures, the dedication, the effort – that have led to these successes. The data continues to tell us that there is a strong correlation between positive effort (a below the surface attribute) and strong results which can be seen above the surface. We look forward to finding further opportunities throughout the year to acknowledge students for their effort.

Secondary Swimming Carnival

Last Thursday the Secondary School had a very successful House Swimming Carnival at SOPAC. There were many outstanding individual results on the day with School records being broken by Erik Scott (Yr 10) in the Boys Champion of Champions 50m freestyle and Olivia Donoghue (Yr 11) breaking five School records in the Girls Senior 200m Individual Medley, Girls Senior 100m Freestyle, Girls U17 50m Backstroke, Girls 50m Butterfly and Girls Champion of Champions 50m Freestyle. Congratulations to the following Age Division Champions:

  • Junior Girls: Chloe Jennings
  • Junior Boys: Rafferty Heard
  • Intermediate Girls: Elizabeth Holtheuer
  • Intermediate Boys: Erik Scott
  • Senior Girls: Olivia Donoghue
  • Senior Boys: Kirill Shatilov

Congratulations also to Roseby House who took out the House Swimming Shield for the second year in a row. A full report on the Swimming results can be found in the Sports section of Note Day.

Most pleasing was the positive House spirit on display throughout the day. Participation was once again up on previous years and it was great to see so many students competing for their Houses and just “having a go”. There was wonderful leadership displayed by our Yr 12 students supporting competitors in their Houses from across the age groups. In a new addition, the Yr 12 race pitted all eight Tutor groups against one another. It was great to see so many Yr 12 students involved and congratulations to Yr 12 Dumolo Red Tutor group for their victory and winning a free lunch on Monday. And finally, a special congratulations to the staff who competed in the Staff v Yr 12 student relay, turning the tables on last year’s narrow defeat and coming out victorious – despite some dubious starts by the Yr 12 competitors!

Clean Up Australia Day

As in previous years, we hope the Redlands community will pitch in to help keep our local area looking beautiful this Clean Up Australia Day, on Sunday 1 March. We will be helping out with the event at Balmoral Beach, and would love to see Redlands families there at 10.00am this Sunday. The meeting point is the Rotunda. Please wear enclosed shoes, gloves and bring sunscreen, water and some garbage bags. Students should wear Redlands Sports uniform. We ask that students are accompanied by an adult, as although there will be teachers present, this is a community organised event. We hope to see many of you there.

Sports Update

We have had many successes in our summer sports season thus far and a large number of Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball and Girls Touch Football teams have made it to the ISA Semi Finals this Saturday. I wish these teams the best of luck in their respective matches. I also wish our Tennis competitors all the best in their NSTA Tennis matches and the rowers all the best in the Riverview Gold Cup this weekend.

Debating Draws

FED

Congratulations to the Senior A, Senior B, Yr 10, Yr 8A and Yr 7B teams for their wins against Pymble Ladies College last Friday.

This week we will be debating at Monte. There are two away debates this week and so we will stagger bus times. Since Monte is close by, we will leave 15 minutes later than usual. Please meet Ms Rolon at the Adams Centre at 3.45pm sharp. A reminder that all students are required to be at each debate and coaching session of the season.

You will need to sign in with Ms Rolon and then sign out before you leave to go home. Parents will need to make arrangements to get students home from Monte after their debate.

You have been emailed venue details.

ISDA

Thank you for a smooth start to the season. Congratulations to the Senior A, Yr 10, Yr 9, Yr 8 and Yr 7 teams who all had wins against Trinity last Friday!

This week we will be Debating at Ascham. Please note that ISDA Debating times are earlier than last year and therefore we will be leaving immediately after school. Please meet Mr Ockenden at the Adams Centre at 3.30 pm sharp. There will be no time to go to the shops. If you want to snack on something you will need to bring a light dinner from home. Most venues provide refreshment, but this is not usually served until later in the evening. A reminder that all students are required to be at each debate and coaching session of the season.

You will need to sign in with Mr Ockenden and then sign out before you leave to go home. Parents will need to make arrangements for students to travel home from the venue after their debate.

Yr 12 Study Room

We have now opened a space where both IB/HSC students can work collaboratively with their peers. This space will allow them to use their time interacting and learning alongside each in an environment that is friendly to do so. At the moment it will be open every Wednesday from 3.30-5.30pm in T14. This space will be supervised by Dr Regis.

Parking

We have reminded all students to be considerate when parking around the school. Students should not park over residents’ driveways or too close to other vehicles. Common sense needs to prevail in this situation.

Sport

If students are currently competing in a Summer Rep Sport (2019/2020) they do not have to complete a Winter Sport. However, it is beneficial to maintain a healthy lifestyle so if they enjoy sport – I encourage them to keep playing.

School Photographs

The following photographs will be taken by Advanced Life on Wednesday 11 March on the Senior Campus. Students are required to wear blazers.

  • Sibling photos in the Redlands Hall from 7.15 – 8.20am.  Junior School siblings are welcome to have their photo taken on 11 March if they were unable to attend the Junior Campus sibling photo day last week.

Swimming Carnival

Thank you to all those students who made their final Swimming Carnival a special one. There was a really fantastic vibe around the pool due to the Yr 12 students leading by example and competing in so many events. The Yr 12 novelty race was entertaining and all students are congratulated for giving it a go.

Congratulations to our Age Champions (there is a full list of Swimming results in the Sports section): Girls 18 Champion – Jennifer Grant; Girls 18 Runner Up – Maddison Hampton-Vickers; Boys 18 Champion – Flynn Henry; Boys 18 Runner Up – Ben Stuart.

Day of Hope

On Tuesday, our Yr 11 students participated in the Day of Hope which facilitated by external speaker, Glen Gerreyn. Day of Hope sought to encourage students to aspire for a hope-filled future. The day allowed students to develop an understanding of the affects that external influences and personal cognitions can have on an individual and encouraged students to think critically about these extraneous influences and personal thought processes. Day of Hope allowed students to develop a sense of hope by correlating positive self-esteem, thought processes, physical performance, health and wellbeing and greater academic satisfaction. In essence, it was about our students finding the power in purpose. Some key takeaways from the day included:

  • The power of a sense of purpose
  • Finding the ability to tap into our strengths – academic and cocurricular
  • The ability to firmly believe that they can achieve anything they put their mind to
  • A plan to tackle short and long-term goals
  • Strategies to turn ‘crazy’ dreams into a reality
  • The ability for Year 11 to be the best version of themselves
  • The knowledge that it is ok to fail early, fail often and fail forward

Students will be harnessing their knowledge from the Day of Hope and incorporating this into the Class of 2021 Legacy Vlog which will feature Tutor Group student reflections on both the Day of Hope and CASEL SEL Competencies.

Effort Acknowledgement

A new initiative has been established to acknowledge students’ who have made significant progress improving their effort grades. It was wonderful to see Matthew Betts, Xavier Burkett, Tessa Clement, Flynn Garner, Thomas Hartnell, Gus Miller, Jameson Prescott and Tylor Wessels received certificates presented by Mr Webber at our Effort Acknowledgement Assembly on Tuesday.

Swimming Carnival

The Secondary School Swimming Carnival proved to be an exciting day. Student Achievements

Aisha Vogler has been offered a place with Taronga Zoo for their Meet the Keeper program. This is an exciting opportunity for Aisha and the program attracts many applicants and entry is competitive. We congratulate Aisha on her acceptance into the program and wish her all the best.

Emma Mahon competed at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships on Friday night. She ran the the U18 3000m, finishing 6th in a time of 10 minutes 41 seconds, which is a national qualifying time. She is now looking forward to competing in Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney at the end of March. We warmly congratulate Emma on her continued achievements in Athletics.

Youth Exchange Program Brewarrina

An opportunity has been presented from Warringah Council for Redlands students to apply to participate in the Youth Exchange program to Brewarrina. Please be aware that applications close on 1 March.

A Sister Cities agreement between Brewarrina Shire and Warringah Councils was signed in July 2000. Brewarrina, or ‘Bre’ as it is known to locals, is a remote community located in north-west NSW, 800kms from Sydney, and has 1800 residents. It has a large indigenous population, is home to the World Heritage listed Fish Traps and has a wonderful history of both indigenous and white settlement.

The Youth Exchange consists of six (three girls and three boys) young people from the Northern Beaches spending a week in Brewarrina in the April school holidays. Some of the activities undertaken in previous years include: visiting Lightning Ridge; learning about Aboriginal language and culture; seeing the 40,000 year old Aboriginal Fish Traps and the old Mission Station; fishing; learning to make and throw boomerangs; visiting Aboriginal art sites; attending a local rugby league or union game; Mt Oxley; swimming at hot bore baths; spending the day at a sheep station; and experiencing the outback in a unique way not available to many people.

All transport, accommodation and activities are provided free. The only cost to participants is incidental/spending money. Two Council representatives lead the group. Click here for more information.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students are learning about emotional awareness and self-regulation. They are discovering that resilient people are able to identify their emotional experiences and control their emotional responses. They are comfortable with their feelings and express a broad array of emotions. Although they still may feel sad or scared, these feelings do not prevent them from coping with the situation and moving forward.

Social Awareness Program

Over the next couple of weeks, two leaders in each Tutor Group will lead each group as they select an organisation whose primary focus is helping young people who are homeless, and they will get to know this organisation in detail.

SchoolTV:Social Media and Digital Reputation

This week I’m highlighting Social Media and Digital Reputation.

“What kids do and post online, the sites they visit and the things they say is permanent. This digital footprint denotes their digital reputation and there’s nothing to stop someone from saving and storing that information about your child.” Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

Social media has become such an integral part of a teenager’s life that it can cause anxiety and lower their self-esteem. Modern teens are learning to do most of their communication whilst looking at a screen instead of another person. They are missing out on very critical social skills.

And dependant on what they are communicating online, it can affect their digital reputation. Friendships, relationships and even future job prospects are all at risk. As a parent, it is very important that you are aware of what picture they are painting of themselves online.

Once information makes its way online it can be difficult to remove. Images and words can be misinterpreted and altered as they are easily and quickly shared around. Privacy settings on social media sites need to be managed in order to protect your child’s digital reputation.

Students will need to be dropped off to Primrose Oval for the start of the session and after the session, coaches will walk the students back up to the Senior Campus at 7.20am to allow time for the students to get changed to make it to lessons for Period 1. The training is open to any athlete who would like to train for the School Cross Country Carnival which is on Thursday 2 April.

If your child is selected for the Redlands ISA Cross Country team after the School Cross Country Carnival, there will be training sessions which will run every Friday morning until Friday 5 June.

If you have any questions in regards to the training sessions, please email the Cross Country Sports Administrator Kate Seebohm or the Head Coach of Middle Distance, Nick Walker.

Positive and Negative Risk Taking

In Pastoral Care this week, students begin their first of five lessons focused on Positive and Negative Risk Taking. These five lessons will support the introduction they had last year in PDHPE and link to Yr 8 PDHPE topics in Term 3. One common risk students may find challenging is knowing how to ask for help at school. See the module Asking for Help in Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills Handbook for additional resources and support materials you can utilise at home with your Yr 8 student.

Yr 8 Pastoral Program

This term, students will focus on developing their understanding of self-management and responsible decision making through setting clear goals, creating an evolving term planner to be added to and adapted throughout the term and by studying positive and negative risk-taking. Outcomes for this term include understanding the connections between emotions and choices, identifying safe and unsafe risks, understanding how choices/impulses can impact personal wellbeing and resilience and to be introduced to some of the consequences involved in these decisions.

Parent Resource

Starting Secondary School by Michael Carr-Gregg and Sharon Witt

This is a parenting guide that deals with one of the most significant transition periods of a child’s life – starting secondary school.

‘We want to give you and your child the best opportunity to thrive in secondary school. By the end of this book you’re going to feel a whole lot more capable of dealing with what Year 7 throws at you.’

The jump between primary and secondary school marks one of the biggest transitions in a student’s life. It’s the point at which a child leaves the relatively safe cocoon of childhood and enters the wide world of adolescence. For both parents and their children, it can be a huge shock, as they encounter a minefield of serious issues to deal with – everything from peer and study pressures to phones, parties and beyond.

In this invaluable resource for Australian families, bestselling authors Michael Carr-Gregg and Sharon Witt provide all the tools and information you need for entering this turbulent and testing time. With warmth and wisdom, they offer latest advice on the following: Settling into secondary school; homework, study tips and tricks; coping with stress, anxiety and depression; social issues such as bullying and friendships; health and wellbeing, including the importance of sleep and diet; and latest advice on mobile phones and technology.

Starting Secondary School is a whole lot more complex than it once was, but this invaluable resource will help your family face this major milestone armed with knowledge and confidence.

Secondary School Information Session

Year 5 Parents and Students

While Yr 7 2022 is almost two years away, parents and students often start thinking ahead towards Secondary School at the beginning of Yr 5.

Yr 5 parents and students are invited to an Information Session to learn more about Secondary School and the transition from Junior School.

Over the next 18 months there will be more information about Secondary School provided to students and parents as part of our Transition program from Yr 6 to Yr 7.

We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday.

Jack Heath – Author-in-Residence

We have loved having author, Jack Heath, spend the week with us in the Junior School. Jack arrived on Monday morning as our author-in-residence and from his very first interaction with the students in assembly, it was clear that his engaging and personable manner, coupled with his humour, would be well received by students and staff alike.

An important aim for us was to ensure that every child experienced Jack’s energy and creative writing guidance and I enjoyed sitting in on a couple of these classes, as well as being part of a staff creative writing workshop after school, which teachers thoroughly enjoyed and took much from to develop our own practice.

Jack’s sessions involved asking students to describe stories they like, and then he explained how to generate the premise for a new story by connecting recycled ideas (eg. Harry Potter + The Hunger Games + Titanic = an orphaned wizard has to compete in a fight to the death on the deck of a sinking ship). The students then wrote a short sample based on the premise that they generate together before he showed them editing techniques that they could use to refine and extend their work. It was great to hear some of the students read their writing samples out with Jack and other students highlighting things the author has done well.

The week has been an unmitigated success and I am sure will be a catalyst to greater student engagement in both reading and writing.

AFL Paul Kelly Cup Success

On Tuesday, our Junior Girls and Boys AFL teams took part in the divisional Paul Kelly Cup competition. I was able to get to a couple of early games and enjoyed watching both teams play with great spirit, skill and teamwork and after the group stages, both teams progressed to the Semi Finals with a 100% record. This continued for the rest of the tournament with both teams eventually crowned as Grand Final winners, and they will now progress to the Regional Finals on 17 June.

Of note, the girls team did not concede a single point in the tournament whilst scoring 222 points at the same time!

Congratulations to all of the students involved and with AFL now a sporting option for girls and boys in Yrs 7 and 8, this may be a pathway and sporting interest some of these students will continue with in the Secondary School.

NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2020 begins next Monday and Junior School students will receive information this week from Mrs Wiebe.

Students will be required to read 20 quality books at their appropriate reading level. Fifteen of these books will need to be PRC books with a further five listed as free choice (do keep an eye out for the stickers in the Library at their year level or above). Please note that no more than two books from any series of books can be counted as PRC. After four years of involvement, students receive a Gold PRC certificate and after seven years, a prestigious platinum certificate is awarded in Junior School assembly.

The Arnold Library team and class teachers look forward to promoting and supporting students with this reading challenge for 2020.

Welcome Cocktail Evening

It was a delight to enjoy the company of many parents last Friday at the annual Redlands Welcome Cocktail evening. Despite the move indoors due to the predicted rain, the evening was a wonderful social opportunity for parents and staff to connect.

My thanks are extended to the Redlands Parents and Friends Association for their work in hosting the event along with Redlands staff. With our Junior School Basketball matches starting at 7.00am the next morning in the same venue, I also thank our Facilities team for their sterling efforts on Friday night and very early on Saturday morning. Thank you to everyone who was able to make this first community social event which was a great start to the year.

Road Safety around the Junior Campus

On Tuesday afternoon at 4.00pm, an adult cyclist was involved in an accident with a vehicle at the Rangers Rd and Allister St intersection. Some of our staff provided first aid to the cyclist but if any parents witnessed the accident, please could they notify the Junior School office or Mosman Police.

I would like to remind all parents of the importance of road safety around our Campus for our students, staff and the local community, whether on foot or bicycle, especially during pick up and drop off.

Combined Independent Schools of NSW Sports Selection

Congratulations to Yr 6 student, Hugo Flatman, who has been selected in the NSW Combined Independent Schools Basketball team. This level of selection is extremely competitive with over 350 independent schools in the State and we wish Hugo well in the upcoming State competition.

Class Parents Representatives

It was a pleasure to attend the first Junior School Class Parents’ meeting this morning, chaired by our Junior School Parent Group Coordinators, Jay Cunningham and Rebecca James. I am grateful to these parents for volunteering their time and support in these vital community-building roles and look forward to working alongside them this year.

Community Spirit

Community spirit was in abundance at the New Starters Afternoon Tea and Twilight Cocktail events held over the past two weeks. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association, together with the School, welcomed families of students who were new to Redlands this year. Both events provided opportunities for families to learn more about Redlands life and meet parents and staff of the School. At the New Starters Afternoon, Michelle Tea, RPFA President and Dana Casimaty, Director of Development welcomed guests and introduced our vibrant, unique and international community. Children enjoyed delicious cakes, fruit and icy poles on a warm afternoon. The Twilight Cocktail evening was extremely well represented by Preparatory School families and Principal, Mr Stephen Webber introduced himself to the community sharing his background in education and his motivation and excitement to join Redlands. Alumni Greta Argyropoulos (Class of 2017) and Christopher Blundell (Class of 2013) delighted guests with their wonderful performances. Events such as these would not be possible without key members of staff and I would like to thank Rebecca Mackay, the School’s Events Coordinator and the Facilities and Maintenance teams for their behind the scenes preparation. This week also held the first Preparatory School Parent Coordinator Group meeting for the year. Thank you to Bree Stevens and Lucienne Willis for their coordination of this group and to the parents who have given their time to organise various social functions for their class and cohort, for the year ahead.

Yr 1 Act for Kids

All Yr 1 parents and carers received a letter regarding the Act for Kids Learn to be safe with Emmy and Friends Program. Act for Kids is a national not-for-profit organisation committed to ensuring Australia’s children have the safe and happy childhoods they deserve. The aim of this program is to help your child:

  • identify when they are feeling unsafe
  • understand their rights around their body
  • identify the difference between private and public body parts
  • recognise the difference between safe and unsafe secrets
  • build a network of safe people they can talk to if they ever feel unsafe.

This program will run in Weeks 5-9 in the classroom for a one hour session, over 5 sessions. You will receive information each week explaining each session and activity sheets that you can do with your child to help them keep safe. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this program, please speak to your child’s teacher.

Yr 1 Excursion

Last Friday Yr 1 visited St Leonards Park for an afternoon of discovery and friendship building. As part of the Science Schoolyard Safari Unit, students carefully searched for various mini beasts using magnifying glasses and other small tools. Students were able to discover insects and other mini beasts in their local environment and observe their different habitats. Throughout the afternoon, Yr 1 students used their interpersonal skills whilst collaborating in team pursuits. Using class parachutes and partaking in initiative games allowed students to work together and practise the expectations relating to inclusive and respectful relationships found in our Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework. Thank you to Yr 1 teacher Ms Angus for her organisation of this event.

Community Garden

Redlands House has a wonderful community garden at the top of the playground. The children have a wonderful time caring for this space, learning a variety of skills while having lots of fun growing plants and vegetables. Gardening assists children learn how to care for their environment, as well as develop Maths and Science concepts, in a way that builds both self-confidence and responsibility. To enable this project to be successful, we rely on parent helpers. If you are able to assist in any way, please let staff know. One of the teachers and the children usually tend the garden between 8.30 – 9.00am once or twice a week.

Paint on Clothes

Every day the children have numerous opportunities to be creative with a variety of resources. Although the children are required to wear an apron whilst engaging in these activities, paint can sometimes make its way onto their uniforms. Some parents have mentioned that they have difficulty removing these stains. Please find the following washing instructions from the manufacturer of the paint.

Washing Instructions – Soak garment, wash in warm water with detergent or Wondersoap. Use of stain removers may make stain removal more difficult.

Orange Class News

Orange Class Seniors have returned to Preschool to discover some exciting new creatures have started at Redlands. Ladybugs have moved in to the veggie patch much to the students delight. This discovery has sparked enthusiasm to uncover, observe and investigate all small creatures in our playground from the bees, the ladybugs, flies and ants. As the students explore the relationships we have with these living things, noticing and responding to change, they develop an awareness of the impact human activity has on environments and the interdependence of living things. This in turn supports students to become socially responsible and develop a lifelong respect for the environment in which we live.

To nurture this learning, the Orange Class teachers lead the Seniors through a Visible Thinking Routine, Think, Puzzle, Explore. This helps students connect to prior knowledge, to stimulate curiosity and to lay the groundwork for independent inquiry.

To promote scientific inquiry, we read from Eyewitness Natural World and looked thoughtfully at close up images of the creatures we had discovered. The Seniors engaged in discussions about what they could see, noticing similarities and differences between these creatures. Following this the Seniors, were provided with a wide range of mediums to express their knowledge and ideas, to further their meaning making.

We Are What We Eat

The importance of a balanced diet for the day to day student cannot be understated. With school diaries full with morning sport trainings, music classes and extracurricular activities, fuelling the body with the right ingredients is vital to student’s mental and physical health. Active students generally don’t eat enough for their requirements. On top of this is the cognitive load associated with academic work throughout the day.

Starting the day in the right way can be the hard part especially when it comes to morning training for some of our Redlands athletes. Having the appropriate fuel present to use in training and across a busy school day can help prevent fatigue, increase cognitive response and aid in muscle recovery. Before training and across the breakfast period, students should have a healthy balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats that will help them get to recess with no drop in energy levels. A large bowl of oats or muesli, topped with some chopped banana and fruit or smashed avocado with poached eggs on toast is a great start for our bodies.

Recess should be short and efficient for the students with a chance to top up with some much-needed protein and carbohydrates. Students are generally active across Recess, running off excess energy but there is still a need to get in some much-needed protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Brown rice sushi, chopped carrot sticks with hummus, smoked salmon and salad wrap are all great ways for the body to re-fuel.

Lunch provides another chance to top up the fuel levels. Examples are salad sandwiches with beef or chicken, pasta salad paired with a few pieces of fruit. Sugars within the fruits will spike energy levels getting the students through the tough afternoon classes whilst preparing them for their afternoon training and commitments.

The NSW Institute of Sport states that ‘One meal alone cannot provide all of the fuel needed to both recover and prepare for your next training session.’ We must have a balanced and ‘multi meal’ approach to get through our busy days whilst also providing enough energy and recovery for the next day. This process of continuous refuelling, repairing and preparing allows our students to be efficient and effective across the school week allowing them to reach all goals in the classroom and on the sporting field.

This is not just the role of our parents and carers. We encourage our students to take responsibility for their nutrition. This is a life skill and something that our students are encouraged to be involved with and embrace. These sometimes seemingly small tasks in our day to day living can be taken for granted. We challenge students to take this on themselves to increase their steps towards a high level of independence.

Winter Sport 2020 Registration

The registration link for the Winter Sport 2020 is currently open. Please note students who have completed a Non-Rep Sport for the Summer 2019/2020 season must complete a Representative Sport for Winter 2020.

Cross Country

Cross Country training will begin on Friday 13 March (Week 7) at 6.20am at Primrose Oval. The training session will run for an hour. Students will need to be dropped off to Primrose Oval for the start of the session and after the session, coaches will walk the students back up to the Senior Campus at 7.20am to allow time for the students to get changed prior to Period 1. The training is open to any athlete who would like to train for the House School Carnival which is on Thursday 2 April.

If your child is selected for the Redlands ISA Cross Country team after the school’s Cross Country Carnival, there will be training sessions which will run every Friday morning until Friday 5 June.

Sailing

Over the weekend two teams from Redlands competed at the ACT Teams Racing Championship 2020 on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. The two teams were led by Sailing Captain Aiden Young and consisted of Gianni Watson, Katina Casimaty, Ben Harrington, Will Byron, Will Wickham, Erik Scott, Ella Delaney, Connor Ikin, Zac Nisbet, Ali Braden and Alex Gibbs.

Racing began on Saturday with very light winds from the east that slowly built over the afternoon. Competing against schools from both ACT and NSW, the Redlands team did a great job to focus on their boat speed and were often some of the fastest boats in their races. As the breeze picked up in the afternoon our teams were able to start bringing more teams racing tactics into the races and demonstrate the skills they have been practicing over the last few months. In one race Will Wickham did an excellent job at laying two mark traps against his opponent’s and Aiden Young managed to launch a great defence against a university team from ANU on the final upwind. Redlands 1 ended the first day on three wins and Redlands 2 on two wins.

Unfortunately, the wind did not fill in on Sunday and the teams were held ashore for four hours before the racing was abandoned. This means the teams finished in 13th and 15th place overall, a great achievement for their first teams racing regatta this year.

The next competition is the SheSails Teams Racing Regatta this weekend.

SNOWSPORTS CALENDAR 2020

George Murphy – Moguls

George Murphy has had an outstanding season of skiing in North America this past season. He has competed strongly in the open age divisions of the top level mogul competitions and established his credentials as one of the best mogul skiers of his age group in the world.

Most of the winter, George was based in Winter Park Colorado training with the Australian Mogul Skiing Academy (AUSMSA) , competing in Colorado events at Steamboat and Vail, Noram Tour (North American Cup) in Utah and Alberta. These events are always very hotly contested as they are the springboard for athletes aspiring to World Cup and Olympic selection for their respective national teams. Any result in or near the top 20 of the field is considered a very good performance, but simply outstanding for a 16 year old. We congratulate George on these incredible results and look forward to his continued growth and success in the sport.

US Selection Trials: Single Moguls Day 1 – 27th place; Single Moguls Day 2 – 20th place; Dual Moguls – 14th place

Rocky Mountain Development (RMD) Series: Single Moguls (U17) – 1st place (4th place Open)

Noram Cup – Deer Valley Utah: Single Moguls – 33rd place; Dual Moguls – 21st place

Noram Cup – Calgary, Alberta: Single Moguls – 21st place; Dual Moguls – 33rd place.

Tennis

It was touch and go on Saturday morning with continuous drizzle forcing the cancellation of all 8.00am Tennis matches. However, by 10.00am the drizzle had stopped and the courts were dry enough to play on. There were some great games of Tennis played with many results decided by the last set played. Team 8 narrowly missed out on a match win going down in a tie breaker in the deciding set, while Team 7 came through with the win, successfully taking out the third set. Other results were not a good indicator of the close points and games played with plenty of exciting rallies making for great contests. Thank you to the many family members that came out in the less than desirable weather to support the Redlands Tennis students over the weekend, your support is always appreciated.

Touch Football

It was a great day out at Macquarie University on Saturday with a number of teams playing multiple games in what was two condensed rounds to make up for wash outs. A number of teams have showed great improvement over the season. We have 6 of our 8 teams making it through to their respective team finals.

This week will see the Semi Finals and Finals for the Senior 1st, 2nd, 4th, Junior A, Junior B and Junior C teams. All finals will be held at St Paul’s Grammar School and times and fields can be found on the Redlands Rhino.

The Touch Football Presentation afternoon will be held on Thursday 5 March at Gore Hill Oval (this will take place during school Sport time). Students will be charged $15 for the event (pizza and drinks will be provided). If any students have food allergies, please email Mr Ellis.

AFL

On Tuesday Redlands sent a boys AFL team and a girls AFL team to the Paul Kelly Cup. At the end of a very hot day, both teams had won all their pool matches and progressed through to the Semi Finals before both being in their respective Grand Finals. Both teams won and now head to Regionals in Term 2. Below are the reports from the girls and boys. In something that is set for the record books the girls team did not have one goal scored against them all day.

Girls

Game one was against Middle Harbour and the girls were in control from the very first bounce, scoring a goal with their first touch. They were superbly led by captains Heidi De Saxe and Zoe Noakes who both controlled the midfield, ensuring the ball never actually went in our defensive third. Further impressive performances from Gigi Forster who kicked a handy couple goals and Stella Cunningham whose run and use of the ball was excellent. They won 65-0.

A much more physical contest was had in Game 2 with Lane Cove really taking it to the girls, who responded very well. Great performances from the road runner herself Lola Brasler, who provided real drive from the backline and midfield. Lexi Rowe proved that power can come in any size with a number of bone rattling tackles on girls much bigger than her. Zoe Noakes continued to display her long and accurate kicking, with a number of kicks landing straight in a unmarked forwards arms. Stella Cunningham kicked an impressive 4 goals in the second half, showcasing her agility and speed. They won 41-0.

Back to back games against Lane Cove saw another commanding performance from the girls in Game 3, with Heidi De Saxe kicking a phenomenal 6 goals as she continued to show off her power, speed and agility. Anabelle Kesby had been demanding a move forward all day and more than justified it with an awesome 4 goal game. Stella Cunningham had another strong game, with her run and kicking really punishing Lane Cove on the turnovers. And finally Lila Soste took some impressive intercept marks and laid some bone shattering hits. They won 60-0.

In the first Semi Final, Lane Cove brought a physical and aggressive brand of football but the girls more than rose to the occasion. Once again co-Captains Heidi De Saxe and Zoe Noakes led impressively from the front, with their work through the midfield ensuring the girls always had first use of the ball. Zoe Twining kicked a very handy 3 goals, demonstrating impressive goal sense and very strong marking. Stella Cunningham played up the ground as a link forward, using her strong and accurate kicking to provide service for the forwards. They won 30-0.

After a number of dominant performances, the day had all led to this. The Grand Final against Middle Harbour. The girls started very impressively, with early goals to Heidi De Saxe and Lila Soste setting a nice buffer to start the game. Tackling machine Lily Rinaldo was a girl on a mission, brining down any Middle Harbour player who dared set foot near her. After a number of strong tackles all across the game from Zoe Noakes, whose booming kick repelled any attack. A couple of classy goals from Stella Cunningham ensured the girls would take the win and finish the day on an unbelievable 222 points scored and 0 conceded. They won 26-0.

Boys

It took the boys the most part of the first half to get used to the warm conditions and playing with each other mostly for the first time, playing Middle Harbour. However, towards the end of the half Charlie Voyce came in handy with 2 amazing snap goals to give us a lead into the half. Now starting to find their groove the boys were making nice movement with Joel Daily’s trusty delivery into the forward line, our goal kickers were spoilt. They won 39-14.

In game 2 against Lane Cove, Archie Kerr was courageous going in hard at the footy every play, showing his tenacity and leading from the front as captain. Our other Co-captain Joshua Colpani had a stellar performance in the ruck, winning almost every tap and providing service for the rovers in the midfield. Redlands had gone behind in the last few minutes of the game, however a goal on the siren by Hugo Ritchie won the second consecutive game and the boys were stoked. They won 30-24.

From the get-go the boys were really starting to find their groove as a team. In game 3 against Middle Harbour, Jack Hutchings was not to be messed with off half back, as middle harbour couldn’t get through to our defensive third due to his marking and interception. Xan Kraszewski-Francia was a man on a mission in the midfield running all over the field, wrapping up opposition players in huge tackles, embracing all of the contact. Up forward Oscar Carlyon and Hugo Ritchie once again were clinical and took great set shots at goal. They won 30-15.

After only just scrapping through with the win against Lane Cove in our second match, we knew this would be a tough game. In the Semi Final against Lane Cove, coming off a large break, the boys starting quite complacent and slow allowing Lane Cove to dictate the play. However, thanks to Chris Stevens saving multiple goals from full back we kept Lane Cove to a low score. Byron Mills and Cooper Rinaldo were instrumental in ticking the scoreboard over albeit we had 8 behinds, all points count and contributed to mounting our lead! They won 14-4.

Onto the Final against Middle Harbour, the boys were keen to put the sluggish Semi Final game behind them. Joel Daily and Archie Kerr were up to their old antics in the middle – chasing after every ball and providing first class service to the boys upfront. Cooper Rinaldo was a star slotting 3 goals and also helping set up his teammates for goals too. This capped off a brilliant day of footy remaining undefeated, despite some close encounters. The boys have very promising AFL careers ahead of them. They won 34-19.
