Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon – Celebrating 120 Years of Redlands Sport

The Luncheon will provide a great opportunity to celebrate the integral value of sport to the Redlands community and its students of the past, present and future. This event is open to all our parents and Alumni. Get a table together with your Year Group, Sports group or with your friends.

One of our esteemed Alumni speakers and former parent, who will be sharing her inspiring sports journey, is Karyn Gojnich (Davis), Class of 1978.

Karyn has had a professional Sailing career spanning over 20 years, including representing Australia at the 1988, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. Alongside this, she balanced a career in the IT industry developing custom software and — with her husband John — raising two daughters who also attended Redlands. In 2018 she was selected as the Sailing team manager and coach for the Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aries, Argentina. Previously a Board Member of Australian Sailing as well as the Oceania Sailing Federation, she is now on the Board of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Karyn remains a strong advocate for Sailing, currently focusing on introducing more children and women to the sport.

“Sport, any sport, I believe teaches us how to play the game and at the same time so many other life skills which is why it is so important to all Redlanders, now and in the future” Karyn Gojnich

Please join us on Friday 5 April to celebrate 120 Years of Redlands Sport with our community and hear other inspiring speakers. Bookings are open here.

Community

The warmth of the Redlands community was certainly felt at the Twilight Cocktails held last Friday night, with many families from Early Childhood in attendance. Dr Lennox warmly welcomed new families to the School and reminded everyone about the upcoming social events in the School calendar. I enjoyed chatting with many parents and although I didn’t have the opportunity to speak to all Redlands House and Preparatory families, it was heart-warming to see so many in attendance this year. It was lovely to hear families enthusiastically sharing stories with me of their children’s positive start to the school year. Events such as these take many weeks of planning and I would like to thank Melanie Hendra, the School’s Event Manager, the Facilities and Maintenance teams for their behind the scenes preparation, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) committee members, in particular, President Michelle Tea, Anna Maria Stillone and Jean Martin who were closely involved with the organisation of the evening. This week also held the first Early Childhood Parent Coordinator Group meeting for the year. Thank you to Jennie Cadman and Bree Stevens for their coordination of this Group and to the parents who have given their time to organise various social functions for their cohort for the year ahead.

Dr Judith Locke Presentation

This week we were fortunate to have Dr Judith Locke, clinical psychologist, former teacher and workplace trainer present workshops to staff and families of the School. Her advice to support children in a friendly and relatable way as well as providing specific strategies around how to help them become independent and make the most of their opportunities whilst at school was invaluable. Dr Locke reminded parents that by allowing children to face a world with some challenge and disappointment it can lead to opportunities that develop resilience and confidence. If you missed this wonderful learning opportunity and would like more information, please visit this website where Dr Locke’s book; “The Bonsai Child” is available, or refer to the Facebook page – Confident and Capable. The five essential skills for long term success in children, which she challenges is more important than academic scores are outlined below:

  1. Resilience – the ability to cope with difficulty
  2. Self-Regulation – foregoing current pleasure for future gain
  3. Resourcefulness – the ability to take the initiative to improve your situation
  4. Respect – for others and authority
  5. Responsibility – contributing to the community

We are very keen for feedback about this event to help us inform our planning for future events. We would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to answer some simple questions by clicking here (even if you were unable to attend).

Easter Eggs for Sydney’s Homeless

Redlands Preparatory school will once again provide Easter eggs and special encouraging cards to the men and women experiencing homelessness at Edward Eagar Lodge in Sydney this Easter. What started as a simple gesture of care has become a much-anticipated tradition among both those who give and receive. The homeless men and women who have received the gifts in the past often ask about the wellbeing of the students who made their special cards and are looking forward to their treats again this year. The children love the story of one man who has kept his cards each year and they have become his most prized possessions. They also love preparing the gift bags and the cards and this simple gift allows some fellow Sydneysiders experiencing homelessness, a sense of inclusion in this celebration.

For families wishing to be involved, please send Easter eggs, especially small and medium-sized eggs to Prep Reception. The students will create gift bags with the donated eggs and cards during recess, lunch and Christian Studies lessons. Our aim this year is to create 300 bags. For any additional information please contact Fiona McKenzie, Junior Campus Chaplain.

Teaching and Learning Presentation

Next Tuesday 5 March, Dean of Teaching and Learning Mr Nigel Coutts, and Dean of Students Mrs Samantha Kourakis, will be presenting an information session for parents and carers. If you would like to know more about our contemporary teaching and learning pedagogy, as well as how we support student wellbeing at Redlands, please join us for this opportunity. The presentation will take place in the Arnold Library, Junior School, beginning at 8.30am. Tea and coffee will be available from 8.00am.

Insect Discoveries

Transition Gold have had an exciting beginning to their year as they were introduced to stick insects in the classroom. These stick insects hatched last year from eggs Mrs Maré collected on a visit to The Australian Museum. There are three different species: the Crowned, Spiny Leaf and Goliath stick insect. Each stick insect lays different eggs and the children have been using magnifying glasses to observe and classify. The class are eagerly expecting hatchlings in the next month or so. The children have enjoyed completing observational drawings and paintings, and writing stories about the stick insects. Projects such as this provide an important foundation of experiences and assists children in making sense of their world. In order to develop an appreciation of nature, children need to engage in many repeated and varied opportunities over periods of time. These experiences, explorations, and processing of information gives students the chance to go beyond surface-level understanding.

Community Garden

Redlands House has a wonderful community garden at the top of the playground. The children have an interesting time caring for this space, learning a variety of skills whilst sharing in the fun of growing plants and vegetables. Gardening assists children learn how to care for their environment, as well as develop mathematics and science concepts, in a way that builds both self-confidence and responsibility. To enable this project to be successful, we are seeking parent helpers. If you are able to assist in any way, please contact your child’s teacher. One of the teachers and the children usually tend the garden between 8.30 and 9.00am once or twice a week. Thank you.

New Learning Hub Building Project

Following my last update in the final Note Day of 2018, I am now in a position to provide some additional information about the series of events which led to the School’s severance of its contract with Ichor and to the tendering process to appoint a new head contractor.

Ichor were appointed through a competitive process the latter part of 2016. Early last year the School took possession of the first phase of the project, which was formally opened last August. The John Roberts Centre was welcomed by staff and students for the splendid new Music facilities which are housed in that Centre.

In late September last year, Ichor were forced into voluntary administration due to a legal dispute between its two partners. Upon legal advice to protect our rights, Redlands formally terminated the contract and retook possession of the site from Ichor, ensuring the construction site was secure and safe. In November Ichor went into liquidation.

It was only at that point that we could commence approaching other builders. The School ran a contractor review process that was coordinated by specialist external parties and, post the end of the school year, they recommended to the Board a builder who was formally engaged at the end of 2018.

The preferred builder is currently in a due diligence phase: reviewing all documentation, work undertaken, and obtaining prices for work moving forward. This process is due to be completed mid-end March when Redlands will look to formally engage the builder on a fixed price contract with an agreed program. Subject to all going smoothly, we are expecting that work on the New Learning Hub will recommence in earnest at the start of Term 2.

Redlands has undertaken this conservative approach to protect its rights and to formally close out the remaining contractual aspects of the previous contractor.

Once the new contract, contract price and program are formalised and agreed, the School will communicate specific information about the revised work program and other details which will then be finalised. I anticipate this communication will be at the beginning of April. In the meantime, much preparatory work has been underway in the background since mid-January.

From the Deputy Principal

Dr Judith Locke

This week, Dr Judith Locke presented to Redlands Secondary School and Primary School parents, focusing on building resilience and independence in children. This connects into our whole-school focus on Wellbeing, and the development of Social and Emotional Learning Skills across all year levels. Dr Locke also spoke with our teaching staff on Monday afternoon, and will return to work more closely with them at the beginning of Term 2. It was so heartening to hear Dr Locke affirm the message, consistently upheld at Redlands, that the development of the 5 Essential Skills of Resilience, Self Regulation, Resourcefulness, Respect and Responsibility is far more important than school results – for it is these things which truly prepare our young people with life-readiness.

There was a high level of parental interest and attendance at these sessions and we are very keen for feedback about this event to help us inform our planning for future events. We would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to answer some simple questions by clicking here (even if you were unable to attend).

We offer these types of information sessions, with presenters from Redlands and guest speakers, to support parents, share resources, and to strengthen further the essential partnership between home and school.

The next such session will be held on Tuesday 5 March 2019, with the topic of Positive Behaviour Support for Learning, presented by our Junior Campus Dean of Students, Mrs Kourakis, and Dean of Teaching and Learning (P-6), Mr Coutts.

RPFA Twilight in the Piazza…well, Hall

What a lovely evening we enjoyed last Friday, with this annual event to connect parents across the School, particularly welcoming new families to Redlands. Whilst the weather did not permit the event to proceed in the Piazza as planned, the rain did not dampen the spirits and it was a credit to the organising parents of the RPFA that the wet weather plan was able to be enacted so effectively. Sincere thanks to the parents, volunteers and staff who contributed to this successful event.

Service Learning at Redlands

This week we had a wonderful assembly led by our Prefects, in particular our Service and Environment Prefects, focusing on Service Learning and the many and varied contributions our students make to both local and global communities. We heard from some of our Yr 12 students about their experiences in Cambodia at the end of last year, from Yr 9 students about their focus on inequality this year and from two Yr 11 students about both the upcoming Service Learning trip to Peru, as well as an opportunity for students to assist in fundraising efforts for a school in Nepal. Our Prefects also asked students to “do the little things”, such as supporting each other through acts of kindness or picking up rubbish around the Campus, to further support our community. I also encouraged all students to be inspired from the assembly and strive for “self-lessness” instead of “selfishness” for the betterment of the School community, as well as wider communities.

Clean Up Australia Day

A wonderful opportunity for students and families to display this “self-lessness” and contribute to the wider community this weekend is to participate in our Redlands Clean Up Australia Day initiative. Please join us from 1.00 – 3.00pm on Sunday 3 March at the Spit Reserve next to the Redlands Rowing sheds. There will be a briefing at 1.00pm before students clean up the area followed by a BYO “plastic free” picnic at 2.30pm. More information can be found in the Service section of Note Day.

Judith Locke Presentation

It was great to see so many of you attend Judith Locke’s presentation to Secondary School parents on Monday evening. From conversations with a number of you on the evening and since Monday, her talk seems to have been useful and informative and, like me, you went home with lots of “food for thought” in regards to our parenting. Judith also spoke to all staff on Monday afternoon and we look forward to having her back with teachers later in the semester for further follow up and the development of ongoing strategies for supporting students and families.

For those who were not able to attend, I thought I would share some of her strategies for how we can best support our children as they grow up.

  • Challenges, setbacks and failures should not be always seen in a negative light and instead seen as valuable opportunities for young people to develop resilience
  • As parents, we need to “step back for our children to step up” as they face increasingly challenging tasks so that they develop independence
  • Do not allow our children to have “adult rights and child responsibilities” – they should earn those adult rights
  • And by making things too easy for our children, they fail to learn the essential skills of:
    • Resilience – the ability to cope with difficulties
    • Self-Regulation – the ability to forego current pleasures for future gain
    • Resourcefulness – the ability to take initiative and improve a situation
    • Respect – both for others and for authority
    • Responsibility – the desire to make contributions to a community
  • And it is these skills that will truly make them “life-ready” when the leave School

We are very keen for feedback about this event to help us inform our planning for future events. We would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to answer some simple questions by clicking here (even if you were unable to attend).

Sports Update

The summer sports season is quickly coming to a close with many of our ISA teams moving to Semi Finals this weekend while other sports are gearing up for end of season regattas or races. I congratulate all teams and competitors on their many and varied accomplishments this season, and particularly, how they have positively represented themselves and the School in a sporting context. I wish all teams competing in ISA Semi Finals, as well as our rowers competing in the Head of the Lake in Canberra, the best of luck this weekend.

I would like to make special mention of a team which will not be competing in the Semi Finals this weekend. This year our Boys’ Basketball program has moved up to ISA Division 1 and our 1sts team has come up against some of the best Boys’ Basketball teams in NSW. While the challenge of this higher level of competition has been rewarding, they were unfortunately out of Semi Final contention coming into their last game of the season on Saturday away at St Patrick’s. However, they still played their best game of the season in this last game, beating St Patrick’s (who will be in the Semi Finals) in an exciting 86-81 victory on Saturday. Most pleasing was to see the way some of the Yr 12 players stepped up in their last game for the School, whether it was defensively or offensively, to finish the season and their Basketball careers at Redlands, on a high note.

Sports Luncheon

We are very excited to be holding our inaugural Redlands Sports Luncheon, celebrating 120 years of Redlands Sport, on Friday 5 April from 12.00 – 4.00pm at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli.

This Luncheon is open to all Redlands parents and alumni and provides a great opportunity to celebrate the integral value of sport to the Redlands community and its students of the past, present and future.

We are delighted to announce our guest speakers, past Redlands students, who will share their very inspiring journey during this luncheon: Karyn Gojnich (Davis), Class of 1978 (Olympic Sailor, Redlander and former Redlands parent), Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987 (Olympic Rower), Lachlan Mackay, Class of 2000 (Rugby: Wallaby) and Holly Crawford, Class of 2001 (Olympic Snowboarder).

Tickets are $130 per person and include a gourmet two course meal and beverages.

Limited spaces are available so please book here so you do not miss out on a place.

Note from the School Nurse

As we are about to move to a change of seasons, we are enlisting your help to encourage and enforce good hygiene etiquette with a view to minimising illness and infectious disease transmission in school this year.

School students are at increased risk of contracting transmittable conditions and infectious diseases because of the close proximity they share in their groups for learning and play. However, students contribute to this risk by sharing drinks, drink bottles and utensils (cutlery, toothbrushes and hair brushes).

There are simple things that everyone can do to help prevent the spread of common conditions such as colds, flu, glandular fever, conjunctivitis, head lice and so on. These include:

  • Hand hygiene
  • Cough, blowing nose and sneeze etiquette
  • Not sharing drink bottles and utensils
  • Keeping distance from friends with colds and coughs
  • Keeping long hair tied and managing head lice infestations promptly.
  • Staying at home with a fever, persistent vomiting and diarrhoea and seeking prompt medical advice when conditions including Influenza, Chickenpox, Shingles, Whooping cough, Glandular Fever, Conjunctivitis, Bronchitis, Impetigo (school Sores), Scabies and Hand, Foot and Mouth are suspected.

We appreciate your cooperation in assisting us look after the welfare of our students and the Redlands School community at large.

Their annual Gala Dinner is their major fundraising event of the year and the Redlands Jazz Choir and a select group of musicians will be performing at the beginning of the night. Taldumande would warmly welcome Redlands parents and friends to the event to support the valuable contribution they make to our local community. Bookings can be made here (Individual tickets | $220, Table of 10 | $2,100, Table of 12 | $2,500).

Hump Week

The next few weeks are the busiest period of this term for many students, working hard for multiple assessments and deadlines. Some students are beginning to show some signs of both physical and emotional fatigue. Students have been assured that while it is common for this time of year, they should look for warning signs of exhaustion. These signs may appear as low tolerance to stress or stressful situations, inattentiveness, insensitivity, lack of motivation and also physical fatigue. Students have been encouraged to keep an eye on each other, openly share how they are feeling, and seek help though the Pastoral Care team if needed.

HSC Student Meeting

Earlier this week, all the HSC students attended a meeting with Mr Randall (Dean of HSC) about the essential information with regards to their course studies, including familiarisation with the rules and procedures advertised by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). It is extremely important for students to accurately update their personal details on the website Students Online, so that they can view personalised information, such as their individual exam timetable, study details and HSC results when they become available. For more information, please click this link

IB ToK Enrichment Excursion

On Friday 1 March, Yr 12 IB Theory of Knowledge (ToK) students will be attending a workshop on Critical Thinking for the IB, offering excellent preparation for their upcoming assessment, the Essay, worth 67% of their ToK grade. The excursion will take place at the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry at the University of Sydney, Darlington. Buses will depart from 2 Allister St (Junior Campus) at 8.30am and they will return to school by 3.30pm. I hope all the students will make the most of this great opportunity, inspired by the presenter’s guidance and wisdom.

Student Leadership

With the Secondary Swimming Carnival, Junior Swimming Carnival and Prefect-led Assembly every fortnight, Yr 12 students have really pulled together to raise a tight-knit community spirit. There has been much positive feedback regarding the way of Yr 12 students modelled good leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of fun. Well done to all students involved.

Student Wellbeing – Managing Stress

Stress is a normal and necessary part of life. Stress can help to motivate us and get us moving and help us to focus. If the stress levels rise too high in our body, this then becomes distress and we start to feel negative effects from these high stress levels – both physical and non-physical symptoms.

Strong mental health helps us to become more resilient. If we are resilient we are able to cope with the challenges that life throws at us so that when something tries to knock us off the path we want to be on, we simply pick ourselves up, brush the dust off and look around for another way to make things happen or to cope with what is happening.

Tips and strategies for students

  1. Exercise can help get rid of stress so make time to do active things like playing sport or going for a walk.
  2. Give yourself permission to relax and take the time to do things you enjoy and that relax you. Schedule time on a regular basis for these activities.
  3. Develop a daily schedule of activities that is realistic and achievable. Make a daily to-do list. Identify your priorities and what is most important to you and stick to your list.
  4. Imagine a ruler marked 1 to 100 and think of all the things that are not good in the world. Where at the moment is the thing that is making you feel bad on this scale compared to the worst things that could ever happen? This reminds us that reality is not as bad as it seems.
  5. Feel good about yourself and your achievements! Reward yourself for the things you do and look for your positive qualities and strengths – give yourself encouragement. Take pride in yourself and your skills and abilities. Accept yourself for who you are and what you are and set realistic expectations for yourself.

Yr 10 Assessment Handbook

The Yr 10 Assessment Handbook has been posted in digital form as a PDF on the Yr 10 Pastoral Page of iLearn. During our Year Assembly last week I showed students where this important document is located on the Yr 10 Pastoral page. Please encourage students to document their assessments on a wall planner. Many large (A1, A2) year planners can be easily purchased online through companies such as Officeworks and Typo. In addition, students should make themselves aware of the assessment rules located at the front of this document.

Study Centre

The aim of the Redlands Study Centre is to provide students from Yrs 7-12 with the opportunity to seek shoulder to shoulder support or assistance in specific subject areas from Secondary School teachers. These sessions are not to be seen as formalised one on one tutoring but instead should be seen as opportunities for students to get answers to specific questions of feedback on specific areas of learning. Most study sessions are held in the Roseby Library before and after school and at lunchtime. The Study Centre timetable is available for students to access on the Yr 10 Pastoral page on iLearn.

Independent Learning

At this time in their learning journey, Yr 10 students should be aware of the importance of independent learning. During our Year Assembly this week, I discussed the importance of making time to engage in independent study/revision as well as Home Learning. There should never be the excuse that there is nothing to do in terms of Home Learning and students should be setting time aside each day for revision. Students should review the learning of the day, read ahead, create summary notes and further investigate topics of interest. Students should be canvassing their individual subject teachers for ideas on what revision strategies are appropriate to each subject. Again, Dr Prue Salter’s website is a valuable resource with a plethora of information to assist students to develop good study habits: www.studyskillshandbook.com.au User name: Redlands, Password: 68results

Yr 10 Explorations in Science

Students in 10.2, Ms Bryant’s Science class, performed titrations (neutralisation chemical reactions) for the first time in their class last week. This is apparent from the very light pink in the conical flask that Ross is holding below. These students managed to achieve very accurate results. Many thanks to Ms Bryant for sharing this exciting learning news.

ISA Swimming Carnival

All Yr 10 students received an email asking for volunteers for the ISA Swimming Carnival to be held on Wednesday 13 March at Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre, Homebush. This year, Redlands will be hosting the ISA Carnival and students are needed to volunteer on the day. This is a great opportunity to be part of an exciting swim meet and for students to demonstrate their leadership skills as part of the Redlands community. Students will be transported to and from the venue by bus and the return time to school on the day will be approximately 6.00pm. Students will be involved in time keeping, marshal running and distribution of catering. Please encourage your son or daughter to volunteer.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

On Monday 25 February, Redlands staff attended a seminar provided by Dr Judith Locke, clinical psychologist and author of The Bonsai Child: Why modern parenting limits children’s potential and practical strategies to turn it around. I hope that many of you attended the session she also ran at 6.00pm on that evening and found it informative and useful.

This week I read an article by Lisa Hughes, in which she reviews Judith Locke’s book. Lisa is the founder and director of Occupational Therapy Helping Children in Balgowlah and Pymble.

International Women’s Day and Dinner Opportunity

This coming Friday 8 March is International Women’s Day. We will be having a whole school assembly on the day, where a guest speaker from the organisation Room to Read Girls’ Education Program in Nepal will be presenting. As Yr 9 are currently learning about gender inequality, we are lucky enough to have two student places at a dinner in Sydney on Thursday 14 March. Please ask to see your child’s email from me for further details. Click here if you wish to know more about this organisation.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students have spent time looking at either how much time they spend online and comparing this with others, and thinking about how this can negatively impact their lives. Others have been looking at cyber-bullying: what it looks like and what their response should be to it as a victim, perpetrator, and a by-stander.

Social Awareness Program

This week students have begun to look at the Term 1 topic of Gender Inequality. Students are now choosing a particular organisation to research in relation to their particular issue regarding gender inequality.

There will be one SRC member elected in your House for each Year Group.

Parent Pastoral Care Presentation with Dr Judith Locke

Thank you to all who attended Dr Judith Locke’s presentation on Monday night. I’ve received a number of positive emails describing the evening as ‘enlightening’, ‘entertaining’, ‘informative’ and ‘practical’. Dr Locke explored how parents can best support their child in an ever-changing world. The workshop was designed to provide specific strategies to assist the young people we care for to achieve their personal best, both within the classrooms as well as in other areas of life. If you were unable to attend and wish to learn more about information covered, you are able to purchase Dr Locke’s book, The Bonsai Child, here. Dr Locke is a Member of The Australian Psychological Society (APS) and a Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.

Student Planners

Some students are naturally organised; for others, organisation is a learnt skill. Each cycle, Tutors are viewing Student Planners to ensure they are being used correctly as a tool to aid time management. We ask that parents also assist students in the use of this important resource by viewing and signing Student Planners each week. Students should be recording 1) the date Home Learning is assigned; and, 2) the date Home Learning is due.

The Joys and Challenges of Parenting

Earlier this week, I attended two sessions led by Dr Judith Locke; one for teachers and one for parents. At both sessions, Dr Locke shared her considerable knowledge and research into over-parenting and the causes and impacts on students, families and schools. It was wonderful to see Redlands Hall full of Early Childhood and Junior School families on Tuesday night, which was mirrored in terms of attendance on Monday evening by Secondary School families.

I am sometimes asked if being a teacher (my wife is one too) makes parenting easier. Let me assure you it does not. Parenting can and should be one of the most privileged and fulfilling roles many people play but is certainly not easy. With no ‘one size fits all’ manual, I found it really helpful to hear Dr Locke validate this and share her sense that, for a number of reasons, this is a tough time in history to be a parent. She also identified five key skills that she believes all children need to learn: resilience, self-regulation, resourcefulness, respect and responsibility, the final two coincidentally being part of our Redlands School Values. Dr Locke firmly believed that developing these traits in young people was far more important that academic matters as our children grow to learn about life and how to conduct themselves in the world around them. I have noted before that through positive partnerships, these values need to be shared at school and home, something that I have often found to be the case at Redlands.

Another point of interest for those present but also for those who were not able to make this session was Dr Locke’s research on parents who often try to ‘save’ their children from possible challenges. One of the examples she gave was of parents who try to influence either class placements or sports team selections, even though parents never have the full awareness of every student and their needs and capabilities, which teachers or coaches would do. Her article, Class Placements: The Case Against Allowing Children to Choose their Class is one that might prompt some reflection and it certainly resonated with situations that both teachers and I have faced, where in essence our professional judgment and trust is questioned.

Every parent and teacher I have spoken with since the sessions found Dr Locke’s presentation to be both pragmatic and realistic and I am already looking forward to her returning to work with Redlands staff next term. More importantly, I have also reflected further on my own role as a father.

Parent Seminar: Positive Behaviour Support for Learning

Continuing our parent seminar series, next Tuesday 5 March, our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Nigel Coutts, and our Dean of Students, Mrs Samantha Kourakis, will be presenting an information session for parents and carers about our contemporary and innovative teaching and learning pedagogy, as well as how we support student wellbeing at Redlands. The presentation will take place in the Junior School’s Arnold Library beginning at 8.30am with tea and coffee available from 8.00am.

Welcome Parent Cocktail Evening

Despite the inclement weather, my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful evening last Friday joining just over 500 others in our Redlands community at the Welcome Cocktail evening. Robert Dunnet Hall was elegantly dressed as the Plan B venue and I acknowledge and thank all of the parent volunteers who helped to organise, set up and pack away a wonderful social occasion for parents and staff.

Particular appreciation is extended to Junior School parent, Anna Maria Stillone, who oversaw the event, ably assisted by Jean Martin and our Redlands Events Manager, Melanie Hendra.

Our RPFA President, Michelle Tea, spoke warmly and engagingly about the strong community at Redlands in her remarks, and this was certainly something that could be felt on the night.

Thank you to everyone who was able to make this first event which was a great start to the year and look out for other upcoming events such as the Inaugural Redlands Sports Luncheon, which is advertised in more detail below.

Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon

The Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon, celebrating 120 years of Redlands Sport, will be held towards the end of this term on Friday 5 April between 12.00 – 4.00pm at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli.

This Luncheon is open to all Redlands parents and alumni and provides a great opportunity to celebrate the integral value of sport to the Redlands community and its students of the past, present and future. We are delighted to announce our guest speakers, all past Redlands students, who will share their very inspiring journey during this luncheon:

  • Karyn Gojnich (née Davis), Class of 1978 (Olympic Sailor, Redlander and former Redlands parent)
  • Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987 (Olympic Rower)
  • Lachlan Mackay, Class of 2000 (Rugby: Australian Wallaby)
  • Holly Crawford, Class of 2001 (Olympic Snowboarder)

Tickets are $130 per person and include a gourmet two course meal and beverages. Limited spaces are available and bookings can be made here. I hope to see many of you there as we recognise this milestone in the history of Redlands Sport.

Junior School Parent Group

This morning saw our first Junior School Parent Group meeting and it was delightful to welcome and meet this group of volunteers who will contribute to our strong sense of connectedness as a School community this year. We are always fortunate to have parents volunteer for these important roles and I look forward to supporting and working alongside them this year.

Student Representative Council

Our peer-elected Student Representative Council (SRC) met for the first time last week and with the group represented by a girl and boy from each Junior School class, there was a real sense of school student voice in the room. These meetings are chaired by our School Captains, Aneke Golowenko and Krishna Gupta, gently guided by Yr 6 teacher, Ms Cosolito. In their first meeting, the students enjoyed a rich discussion on ‘Positive Behaviours for Play’, which they believe will help to guide our students at recess and lunchtime.

SRC members will ask their classmates for feedback and bring this feedback to our next meeting in order to revise our ‘Positive Behaviours for Play.’

Clean Up Australia Day

All Redlands students and their families are again encouraged to participate in Clean Up Australia Day, an activity to help make a positive contribution in our local community. This year, we are changing location and will be focusing our energy on cleaning up Spit West Reserve. Many Redlands students have spent time in this area for various sports including training sessions in the park and rowing on the harbour. This is our chance to make a positive difference. We will be fanning out from the Redlands Rowing sheds and seeing if we can remove as much rubbish as possible from the park and the harbour foreshore.

Date:                                 Sunday 3 March
Arrive:                               1.00pm for a short briefing
Clean up:                          1.15pm – 2.30pm
Afternoon tea:                 2.30pm, BYO snacks to share

Information for Events and Excursions

Following some recent parent feedback, I am writing to provide parents with some guidance when seeking information on events and excursions where parent permission has been requested. As parents, when you are in Redlands Pulse granting permission, there is always a letter of information within the permission box of information that can be downloaded for your reference. Wherever possible, we will seek to add these letters to the relevant sections of Redlands Pulse too, eg. a Year excursion permission request would also have the letter in the Yr 4 section of Redlands Pulse.

Year 5 Parents and Students

While next Wednesday’s Secondary School Information Session is primarily aimed at Yr 5 parents and students for Yr 7 2021, any Yr 6 parents and students who did not attend the same evening last year for Yr 7 2020 are warmly invited to attend. Please email the Registrar if you would like to do so.

There will be a Yr 6 into 7 Transition Session for Yr 6 parents and students in Term 2 on Monday 13 May at 6.00pm.

Mouthguards

There will be a representative from ProFit Mouthguards at the school next week, Wednesday 6 March. ProFit mouthguards are professionally fitted onsite using dental moulds and offer protection for teeth and gums whilst also reducing the severity of concussions caused by contact sports.

For any student wishing to be fitted please contact Mr Jack Gooding and please complete the registration form. These mouthguards are recommended for all Winter Representative Sports in Redlands including Hockey, Football and Rugby. The application form can be found here.

Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all including those currently not in a Representative Sport and there are sessions each morning on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with additional afternoon sessions on Monday and Wednesday. Sessions are as follows:

Monday/Wednesday/Friday mornings – 6.00am Fitness Session Open – Session runs from 6.15am-7.20am
Monday/Wednesday morning – 3.30pm Fitness Session Open – Session runs 3.40pm-4.20pm
Wednesday mornings will have a session run that is tailored towards Rugby Pre-season.

I would recommend that all students looking ahead to their Winter Representative Sport look to use these sessions as a way to prepare physically for their 2019 seasons. Sports such as Football, Rugby and Netball all require a level of strength and flexibility all of which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre.

There will also be more information sent out regarding a High Performance program for some of our athletes across the Representative Sports at Redlands as we begin to prepare for the Winter Sport season. This program is designed to track certain athletes through their off-season/in-season, managing their goals and targets for their chosen sports. This program is a more individualised program and offers the students a more tailored approach to their conditioning and strength development.

Please speak to Mr Gooding directly or email on jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you would like to speak regarding individualised programs and or the High Performance program.

Basketball

Round 10 was an important round for many of our teams, with some of our teams relying on a win to get through to the Semi Finals. Despite a few tough losses, we still have 17 teams through to the Semi Finals and the 14D Boys have successfully made it straight through to the Grand Final.

Congratulations to all teams that have successfully made it through to the Semi Finals this Saturday. It is fantastic to see six of the seven girls teams progressing into the Semi Finals, showing that our Girls program is going from strength to strength. The Boys program has had another great year, and despite both our A and B Boys teams moving up a division, it’s a great sign that we still have 12 of the 18 Boys teams progress through to the post-season playoffs.

Don’t forget to register to attend the End of Season Basketball Dinner. Please see the details below:

Rowing

On Saturday the Yr 8 students headed off to separate regattas with the girls attending the Kings/PLC Regatta in Penrith while the boys raced at the AAGPS All Schools Regatta held on Hen and Chicken Bay. For both groups, this was their first regatta experience independent to the rest of the Rowing program.

The girls started the day with small boat racing in either the double or single scull events before moving across into the Coxed Quads. Some standout results were the combination of Alana Mansfield and Erin Tyrrell finishing 4th in Division 1 in a time that would have seen them in second place in any other division. Issy Treloar raced a patient and consistent race in the single scull, seeing off some fast starters to win her scull division comfortably.

In the School Coxed Quads, the Division 1 crew of Issy Treloar, Briar Carter, Charlotte Scamps, Catarina Croll and Lucy Horton were narrowly beaten by Loretto Normanhurst for 2nd place, finishing in 3rd while the Division 2 crew of Zoe Naismith, Aysha Sayan, Erin Tyrrell, Alana Mansfield and Camille Ghenzer finished a strong 2nd place behind Queenwood.

Meanwhile the Yr 8 boys who were racing against the GPS schools for the first time this season punched well above their weight! The combination of Liam Batemyr, William Natilli, Liam Griffin, Zac Garvey and Maya Little racing in Division 6 finished a strong 3rd while the combination of Joe Griffiths, Chase Vandekreeke, Fergus Edmonds-Wilson, Angus McLachlan and Charlotte Morrison also finished 3rd in Division 5. The standout of the day however was our Yr 8 Boys 1st crew of Patrick Walker, Matthew Fry, Daniel Close, Finn Woodward and Charlotte Morrison who won Division 1 in what was the fastest time of the day for the event, beating all other Yr 8 1st crews from the GPS schools. With no lane markings and racing on an open expanse of water, skilled coxes really can make a huge difference at Hen and Chicken, to this, special mention should go to Maya Little and Charlotte Morrison who between them coxed all of the Boy’s crews at this Regatta.

Next weekend will see the whole program head to Canberra for the ACT Head of the Lake with our Yrs 8-9 students departing at recess on Friday while the Yrs 10-12 students depart at lunch. Parents and supporters are encouraged to make the trip down to watch the racing.

Rugby

Friends of Rugby Meeting – there will be a Friends of Rugby meeting next week on Monday 4 March starting at 6.00pm. For all those wishing to attend please contact Mr Jack Gooding directly at jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au or Mr Malcolm Pascoe at mjp24601@gmail.com.

Tennis

Saturday started out with rain clouds ominously lurking around from very early on. Our 8.00am Tennis matches went ahead as planned giving students the opportunity to improve their match playing skills. By 10.00am it had started to drizzle on and off. Matches started in the hope that the rain would pass. In the end the courts were too wet to continue. Thank you to all students for showing persistence and a great attitude despite the challenging conditions.

Touch Football

This weekend sees three of our teams compete in the ISA Touch Football Finals held at St Paul’s Grammar, Cranebrook. This is a wonderful representation of how far our program has come this year, seeing not only two of our Junior sides qualify but also our 1st VI Girls make the Finals playing in an incredibly hard ISA A Division.

For our Junior Cs their season started out on a tough note, losing their first two matches and coming away from a weekend at Oxley with a controversial draw but it was amazing to watch this team build each week, not only developing as a team but also each individual player becoming stronger. So many of this team were new to the sport this year and watching their two wins last weekend away at Kinross is one of my highlights for the season. I cannot wait to see players like Lily Attard, Madison Hungerford and Anna Ivanovic represent our school in their match against a strong St Andrews Cathedral School side, this whole squad should be extremely proud of their work this season.

Our Junior As came out of the blocks like a cannon, sweeping through the first half of the season undefeated and with the best For/Against record across any team in the competition. With comprehensive wins against Chevalier, Oxley, BMGS and Kinross the Junior As sat atop of the table and looking at an undefeated season as we went into the Christmas break. This little stop in our season managed to shake the squad a little bit, losing a bit of our attack in a draw against Chevalier and a loss against Oxley but it was a credit to this group that they went on to record their two best wins against BMGS and SAS. This team is blessed with some amazingly strong players that combine so well in attack and defence. Sophia Hill and Piper Allen are without question our two leaders, building our attack and feeding the strike weapons we have out wide, creating some wonderful space for ball runners like Emma Mahon and Ruby Kelly. This weekend sees this squad faced with the challenge of proving they deserve to be considered the best team in the competition and go out as Grand Final winners.

The journey for our 1st VI Girls started with the pre-season trials and the camp away in Berry, where they began to build as a squad, seeing where they needed to improve to come up to the level of this new competition. This group is built around some amazingly talented athletes with Lulu Simpson, Sydney Stuckmann and our Captain of Touch Football, Caitlin Du Plooy, leading this group of girls. But it is the development of the rest of the squad which is the best highlight for the season. Seeing players like Caroline Bates, Aoibheaan MacLochlainn and Ruby Brook become so brilliant in their attack each week is a credit to their hard work and the coaching of Mr Ellis. This team has ridden an up and down season but strong wins throughout the season has meant they qualified 3rd behind Barker and the undefeated team of Kinross. This weekend sees them with the chance of beating Barker in the Semis and from there a Grand Final win is within grasp.

This has been a wonderful season for all of our teams and despite the win/loss records of some of our teams, the development across our whole program has been so strong. I wish all teams the best of luck on the weekend, let us see if we can come away with multiple Grand Final winners.

Extra Sports

Don’t forget our great extra sports on offer before and after school. Our Football Skills Squad is an active after school option running on Mondays with Coach Javier Carpio.

Agility and Speed training will return with the Junior School Oval, which is looking better and better each day!

IPSHA Sports

IPSHA matches begin this weekend. All matches, times and venues are as per the original draw.

Basketball

Our Yrs 5/6 basketballers have really lifted the bar in the early part of this season. Our teams are so far undefeated across three rounds in Grades A – F and our depth is truly showing through with many of the students involved in our Rep team Intraschool matches ready, willing and able to take the court for our graded teams. The quality of Basketball across all grades is impressive and I can assure you that our coaches are working hard to ensure our players are improving all aspects of their game, not just getting results on Saturdays.

Lachlan Carmichael was successful in being selected for NSWCIS Boys Basketball team last week. He will be part of the CIS team who have dominated the NSWPSSA Championships in recent years. That tournament is in Term 2 in Maitland. Congratulations Lachlan.

Cricket

Our Cricket team were washed out last weekend, but are back on track this weekend with a trip to The Kings School. The roster is as normal and Nick and Adam will be there from 7.30am for warm up.

Tennis

Stella Simpson Morgan has been the cornerstone of our Tennis team for a few years now and was this week selected for the second year running to represent NSWCIS at the NSWPSSA Primary Tennis Championships in Inverell in May.

Girls’ Football

Our Girls’ Football teams are spread far and wide. We have six teams playing modified matches everywhere from Pymble to Tara to Moore Park each week. Coaches reporting back are ecstatic with the effort of the girls and improvement already.

Winter Sports Choices

Don’t forget to log into Trybooking to enter selections for your Winter Sports. The booking window will remain open until 5.00pm Friday 1 March.

Paul Kelly Cup

The Paul Kelly Cup is the largest AFL Primary School competition in NSW and the ACT and is open to students in Yrs 5 and 6. The Paul Kelly Cup consists of 12-a-side teams competing in round robin carnivals in the local area. Games are played on a smaller field using modified 12-a-side rules. This allows children who are new to the game to experience and enjoy AFL in a safe and fun environment. Our teams will play a minimum of three games at the AFL Paul Kelly Cup Gala Day. We have entered teams into the Gore Hill PK Cup on 20 March.

Students interested in playing should sign on at Dunnet Hall noticeboard, outside the Sports Office this week.

Meet the Music Series 1

As part of the Curriculum Music Program, last Thursday evening Yr 9 and 10 students had the unique opportunity to attend Meet the Music Series 1, presented by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. This concert showcased two significant orchestral works, Amériques (1929) by Varèse and the Australian premiere of Marsalis The Jungle, Symphony No. 4 composed by Marsalis. As a Parisian in America, Edgard Varèse was entranced by the tumultuous soundscape of New York and his composition Amériques is a portrait of the city in all its thrilling chaos. In matching the intensity of city life, Wynton Marsalis, presented his modern symphony, where Jazz Band meets orchestra, as musicians explored the exciting sounds of New York, from Spanish Harlem to Wall Street. Marsalis, who performed alongside his orchestra in this concert is regarded as the epitome of American creativity and modern music.
