Issue 4 2025 Term 1 Week 4 - 20 Feb 2025

From the Principal

Recently I was asked for my opinion on the purpose of education and schooling, and my answer was simple: to help people be able to live worthy lives in a world worth living in.

While this aspiration is grounded in various philosophies, it is also at the heart of our Redlands Vision and Mission, as well as our Motto: Luceat Lux Vestra (Let Your Light Shine) which comes from the Gospel of Matthew, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven”. So, at the heart of our motto is a call to live virtuously so that we can have a positive impact on others and the world around us.

To start this year, I have been reinforcing this message to students by focusing on our School Value of respect. Respect is the starting point for how we should treat each other, and it is the foundation for positive relationships between students, staff and parents. Pleasingly, it is a real strength at Redlands.

However, unfortunately, in the world around us too often we are confronted by examples of disrespect, intolerance and even hatred.

In her book, Bright Shining: How Grace Changes Everything, Julia Baird says the cure to these ills is grace or the ability to respect others and to see the good in them, to recognise their humanity, to embrace difference and to believe that people can grow, can learn and can make a positive change.

The Wiradjuri people of Central NSW have a similar belief encapsulated in their tenet of “Yindyamarra”. As Wiradjuri man Stan Grant explains, “It is not just a word, it is an idea. It is a philosophy. It is a way of living. It is a way of being. Yindyamarra – quietness, kindness, respect. Strength in that quietness. Strength in that kindness. Strength in that respect. What better idea than there is Yindyamarra to speak to the differences between us.”

So, as we encounter challenging situations at school and in life, I hope all of us can let our lights shine, live with grace and embrace the philosophy of Yindyamarra. Doing so will not only allow us to live a worthy life, but it also might help to make the world a better place.

This week I am excited to see us launch our new mobile friendly Feedback and Assessment Tool in Pulse for Secondary School parents which will provide more personable, actionable, timely and transferable feedback throughout the year, giving instant insight into students’ ongoing growth and progress. While currently only available in the Secondary School, we will be exploring how we can apply this approach to Junior School students as well, over the course of the year. I would encourage all parents to read more about this tool in the Secondary School section of Note Day.

I look forward to seeing many families at our Twilight in the Garden tomorrow evening.

Community Update

We look forward to welcoming parents and carers tomorrow evening to our annual Twilight in the Garden event. Twilight in the Garden provides a wonderful opportunity for all families to connect with our School community on the Fahl Garden on our Senior Campus … as the weather looks to be holding for us. Tickets are still available here.

It was a pleasure to attend the first meeting of the Junior School (3-6) Parent Contact Group this week.  Mr Corcoran, Mr Quach and Ms Moore provided updates on the start to the year and community activities and projects were shared and discussed by our RPFA. There are plenty of community, class and year group events planned for this Term, all listed in the RPFA section of today’s Note Day.

We are pleased to announce that our new Feedback and Assessment Tool is now live for Secondary School parents and carers in Pulse.  This unique tool was developed by Redlands in response to feedback from our community and replaces iLearn as the ‘one stop shop’ for all feedback and assessment information – reports, upcoming assessments and results, coaching conversations and more. This tool will continue to be enhanced as the year unfolds and a Junior School version is also in development. Please click here to read more on this terrific and easy to use tool in Ms Van de Peer’s Note Day article.

A reminder to book your tickets for our International Women’s Day (IWD) breakfast where Julie Inman – Grant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, will lead a vital discussion on the advancement of gender equality, empowerment and safety in an increasingly digital world. Revenue generated from this very special event will be donated to Mary’s House Services who provide essential accommodation for women and their children fleeing domestic and family violence or abuse.  Tickets for this not to missed event can be purchased here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly or the wider Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Alumni Update

Tiffany Wong RL 2014

Redlands is fortunate to have an extraordinary Redlander community of engaged and supportive past students. Tiffany Wong, a Redlander Young Alumni Awards Winner in 2023,  is a perfect example returning to campus as a Redlands Music and Drama Tutor, a guest performer at many events, a long serving member of the Redlanders Alumni Association, and soon to be judge for the upcoming student Senior and Junior Piano Competition semi finals! Tiffany competed in the very first Piano Competition when in Year 3 in 2005 and competed every year until graduating!

Tiffany’s list of accomplishments is extraordinary, and a few of her recent achievements include:

  • The role of Juliet (!!) in the Australian Shakespeare Company’s 2023 production
  • Leading role in the first Australian Amazon original film Five Blind Dates, now streaming
  • Nominated for the 2023 KXT Award for Excellence in Directing (Boom)
  • Artistic Director and Founder of Slanted Theatre, 2021-Present

Our wide network of Redlanders adds tremendous cultural richness and offers unique opportunities for our entire community past, present and prospective.

Redlander Memorabilia Donations from the Roseby Era

It has been an exciting time for our Archives and Alumni Office, with three thoughtful donations of memorabilia allowing our collection to grow.

Thank you to the family of Redlander Joan Patterson RL 39, for visiting Redlands to donate Joan’s precious prize books, pocket, badge and Intermediate Certificate. Joan was a member of the Class of 1939, and thus a student under the much beloved Miss Roseby. She won an academic prize every year and was very involved with sport, especially tennis and netball, even winning a pocket for skiing and was eventually one the Sports Captains in her final year.

Thank you also to Judith Sleijpen (formerly Quane) School Captain and Roseby House Captain 1964 who donated a magnificent collection of Lux Magazines for each year she attended the School, along with all her class photographs complete with identification (yes, thank you!), there were several great casual shots from the mid-1960s, school reports, Judith’s blazer pocket, Roseby House Captain badge and Prefects badge, programs to round out our collection, newspaper clippings, warm handwritten cards from Miss Fitzpatrick and Miss Steel and a spelling book from the Junior School.

Thank you also to Judy Wilson’s family who donated their mother’s Prefect pocket and bade from 1947, class photos and a very unique painting by Miss Mabel Roseby, Deputy Principal, upon her retirement.

Head of Secondary School

It’s been a wonderful Week 4 on the Senior Campus and Week 2 on the High Country Campus. This week, we launch a new ‘note’ to our Note Day, with a weekly feature from Mr Edward Atkins, our Head of High Country Campus. If you haven’t already visited his Note Day addition, I encourage you to take a read and share in the joy and adventures of our first Year 9 Moonbah cohort. This week, our Dean of Studies, Ms Allisa Wunder has been visiting the Campus and spending time with students and staff.

Valentine’s Day with a Heart!

Last Friday our beautiful Service Captains raised about $1,000 for HeartKids Limited, helping babies with childhood-onset heart disease. It was wonderful to see the Secondary School spreading the love!

Through this initiative, our Secondary School student leaders are bringing their 2025 motto With Heart to life – literally!

Did you know that 8 babies are born every day in Australia with a heart condition, that’s 1 in 100 babies
It’s a lifelong disease with no known cure,

You can be a sweetheart for a Heart Kid this February and help our students support this incredible cause via your donation here.

Feedback and Assessment Tool

We are pleased to announce that our new Feedback and Assessment Tool in Pulse is now live and replaces iLearn for parents in our Secondary School. The development of this tool is part of our Dynamic Feedback and Reporting Project and is in direct response to feedback from parent focus groups requesting a single platform for viewing all feedback and assessment information.

This short video outlines how it works. You can access the tool via Pulse and your Redlands App (under the ‘More’ section).  It’s clear our community values personal, actionable, timely and transferable feedback, and we hope this brings us one step closer.

If you have any feedback or suggestions for additional functionality, please let us know here as we continue development with view to providing our Junior School parents with something similar over the next 12 months.

Facilities Update

Our new toilets on Level 2 are now open and accessible, providing students and staff with closer access to bathroom facilities. New Year 12 lockers have been installed on Level 3 and 4 of the Redlands Learning Hub and further lockers, including large Sports lockers, are arriving in the coming weeks.  Although it is cooler today, with the warmer weather we are aware of the need for good air conditioning in our classrooms.  Currently in our new W block there are two classrooms – W3 and W6 with no working air conditioning.  Please rest assured that our Property Services team are looking to rectify this as soon as possible. In the meantime, we have placed portable air conditioning units in these classrooms.

Kids Giving Back – Harriet Bowyer Yr 9, Isla Anderson Yr 10, Nell Bowyer Yr 10

During the Term 4 of 2024, and the recent school holidays, these students were among 1170 young changemakers who contributed to making over 6,500 meals, breakfast boxes, snack packs and care packs for vulnerable communities across Sydney. They also wrote thoughtful, encouraging messages to be shared with those in need. Their kindness, leadership, and willingness to serve truly embody the values of generosity and community spirit. Their efforts have made a real difference, and we are incredibly proud of them!

Year 7 Adventures and Events

Year 7 Camp takes place next week. The students head to Biloela in the Southern Highlands for 5 days of adventure. This is a wonderful opportunity for Year 7 students to build on their successes so far, embedding friendships and making new ones while stretching their comfort zones. It’s a bright and early start for them on Monday as they meet at school at 6.30am for departure.

After Camp, on the following Tuesday afternoon from 5.00pm Year 7 parents and carers are invited to the Year 7 Meet and Greet on the Fahl Garden. This is an event for the adults – parents and Redlands staff alike – to gather, converse and celebrate the transition of Year 7 so far. Year 7 parents, if your Year 7 child remains at School, then they will need to access the Roseby Library Study Centre, and complete home learning and revision while they wait for you. We look forward to getting to know our Year 7 parents and carers at this annual event.

Moonbah

After a week and a half at Moonbah, students have comfortably settled into their daily routines and adjusted well to the new environment. A typical Monday to Friday at Moonbah looked like this:

  • 6.45 am – Wake up
  • 7:00 am – Fitness and Wellbeing
  • 8:00 am – Breakfast
  • 8:45 am – 4:00 pm – Moonbah Learning Activities
  • 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – Cocurricular activities / Free Time
  • 6:00 pm – Dinner
  • 7:00 pm – 8:30pm – Night Activity
  • 9:30 pm – Bedtime

Students have enjoyed their morning fitness and wellbeing sessions, embracing the opportunity to start the day with energy and focus. Many have made great use of the small fitness room on campus, developing healthy routines and building confidence. The sessions have fostered a positive atmosphere, promoting both physical health and mental wellbeing.

They have been exploring the extended campus as part of the Environmental Learning Project (ELP). They’ve enjoyed visiting sites like The Dam and The Summit, where they collected data on plant and animal species, took meteorological readings, and gathered soil and water samples for classroom analysis such as pH, conductivity, moisture levels and microscopic life. This is a long-term project, over many Moonbah groups, examining the human impact and management of the land.

Through Moonbah Echoes, students have reflected on their personal journeys before delving into the history and culture of the Ngarigo people, the traditional custodians of this land. They have designed their own Lore tree which looks at family traditions and customs.

This week, students in the Paddock to Plate elective have been deepening their understanding of sustainability, comparing their carbon footprint at HCC to their footprint in Sydney. Excitingly, some of the seeds they planted last week have already begun to sprout! Meanwhile, in Plate of Origin, students successfully completed a Food Handling Certificate and put their skills to the test by making a variety of dampers.

The Bush to Big Screen students have been creatively developing their storyboards by drawing inspiration from the unique objects, animals and experiences found around campus. They’ve transformed everyday encounters into engaging visual narratives, showcasing their growing storytelling skills. Each storyboard reflects their deepening connection to the environment, blending imagination with real-life observations. The process has encouraged thoughtful reflection and collaboration, resulting in original and meaningful stories.

Students have been developing their independence, taking charge of managing their own schedules and ensuring they are in the right place at the right time. Additionally, they have been responsible for maintaining cleanliness in shared spaces, contributing to a positive and respectful communal living experience.

Buzzing with Excitement: Beekeeping and Gardening Clubs Spring Into Action

This week at Beekeeping Club we had an unprecedented number of students turn up to meet our Redlands bees. Students put on protective suits and gloves and handled frames of bees with confidence and ease, with many students gently picking bees up and watching them in awe. In the lead up to our honey entry at the Royal Easter Show, next fortnight we will begin bottling our precious Redlands honey and have a blind taste-testing to see if our Redlands honey is rated the highest amongst some other honey brands.

At the Gardening Club, our avid gardeners filled two full buckets of weeds that grew over the holiday period. We are looking forward to filling the now fresh garden beds with some new produce for our canteen.

Year 11

Term 1 Update

The first few weeks of term have passed quickly, and students are settling into their routines. School clubs are now up and running, providing a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in cocurricular activities. Information about these clubs can be found on the dedicated Coucrricular and Activities page on Pulse.

This term, our theme is Responsibility and Accountability. As senior students, young people gain additional rights, but with these comes additional responsibility. This includes meeting expectations around punctuality, uniform and academic commitment. Together, we aim to foster a culture where we support one another in meeting these responsibilities.

To assist with this, tutor sessions have been focused on planning and developing essential skills for senior school success. A wall planner is available from Ms Kells in the Student Service Centre to help students manage their time effectively.

A reminder that assessments begin in Week 6 for both HSC and IB cohorts and continue through the rest of the term. Students should refer to Pulse for detailed information on their assessment schedules and approach their subject teacher in advance of their assessments.

We look forward to seeing our senior students continue to grow in confidence and capability throughout the term.

Mock Trial

For the past three weeks the Year 11 Mock Trial team has been meeting once a week with a coach after school for preliminary research and background knowledge of the law and the NSW Mock Trial rules. On Tuesday’s session, we focused on cross-examination, using practice scripts to recreate the interaction between a barrister and witness.

Our team this year consists of:
  • Lucy Maher
  • Sienna Harriss
  • Tessa Griffith
  • Kira Delaney
  • Sofia Whatmough
  • Ethan Lee
  • Sam Harris
  • Bruna Hirohashi
As we continue our preparation, our focus will shift towards refining our argument construction and improving courtroom etiquette. Each team member is developing their skills in preparation for the roles of the team, ensuring we are well-prepared for our upcoming trial in March. With dedication and teamwork, we are building a strong foundation for success in the competition.

Year 9

Getting into our Flow and Fine-Tuning our Routines

We are now well into Term 1 and Yr 9 are getting into their work, study and cocurricular routines. We have been really impressed with how students have been engaging in their new subjects and new electives, and encourage them to focus on reaching out to their teachers this year and using their expertise, should they require support or guidance in the subject. Assessments are fast approaching, and students need to plan ahead.

A variety of subjects have assessment tasks occurring next week, including:

  • Mathematics
  • History
  • French
  • Latin
  • Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Spanish

I encourage parents and carers to speak to their children about their assessment schedules and to plan for success by using tools such as wall planners at home to stay on top of future tasks and commitments.

You can find all the key information on assessments this year in the assessment handbook and assessment calendar on the Yr 9 Pulse page.

Duke of Edinburgh Registration

The Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) program is a globally recognised youth development program that promotes resilience, leadership and community engagement. It is offered to all eligible students at Redlands across three levels – Bronze, Silverand Gold. Each level involves setting and achieving goals in physical activity, skill development, community service and an adventurous journey.

  • Program Overview: Each level has specific requirements that encourage students to step outside their comfort zones and develop important life skills. Information about each level can be accessed here.
  • Registration: If your child has not yet registered, they can do so with your support via the following link: Duke of Ed Registration.
  • Award Leaders: If your child has signed up but is waiting for an Award Leader to be assigned, please know that Mr Gray and I are working to allocate leaders as quickly as possible.
  • Student Support: Once Award Leaders are assigned, we encourage students to discuss their goals and activities with their Award Leader to ensure they are on track for their chosen award level.

Safer Internet Day

This week students have been engaging in some fantastic Safer Internet Day initiatives. During our Pastoral Care sessions. Students have been recognising the importance of online safety and have spent some time investigating ‘deepfakes’ and engaged in a quiz to highlight the importance of fake news and the spread of misinformation.

For further information and resources to support young people here is the link.

Shout Outs

Well done to Ross Skelton who engaged brilliantly with the ‘design your own library tote bag’ activity last week. The Library Team were so impressed with his design they have asked him to design the next cover of the Roseby Review, our library magazine.

Congratulations to Matthew Brooks who competed in the Cannonball Mountain Bike Competition last week. This was Matthew’s first competition and was the youngest in his division (13 to 15 years). Matthew crossed the finishing line in 20th place, out of hundreds of competitors. An incredible achievement!

Tutor Focus: Dumolo Blue’s Pet Rocks

Last week, Ms Webster’s Tutor Group, Dumolo Blue, were hard at work creating Pet Rocks. As you may have heard, Mr Corcoran and Mrs Van de Peer have introduced their pets to the students in what has been named the Leo Pet Wars for 2025.

Both Mr Corcoran’s dog and Mrs Van de Peer’s cat are named Leo, so it seemed only right for Year 7 Dumolo Blue to create their own pet Leos. These sedimentary pets were adorned with feathers, gemstones, pipe cleaners and googly eyes, each with a unique personality, just like our DB students!

A huge thank you to Ms Webster for leading this fun and creative activity! The students had a fantastic time designing their unique Leos, and their enthusiasm was evident in every carefully crafted detail. We can’t wait to see where these little rock companions end up, perhaps as study buddies, desk mascots, or even contenders in the ongoing Leo Pet Wars!

A Letter from the Chaplain

As part of our commitment to nurturing the whole student – academically, socially, and spiritually – in Chapel, we gifted each Year 7 student with a Redlands Bible which has been signed by the Principal. This gift reflects the significant faith foundations of our School and our desire to encourage students to explore questions of meaning, purpose and values in a supportive environment.

One of the key verses that guides our community is Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” At Redlands, we seek to foster an environment where every student is encouraged to shine their light, embracing their unique gifts and contributing to a culture of kindness, acceptance and diversity.

As the Secondary School Chaplain, my role is to support students in their personal and spiritual development through chapel services, Christian Studies, pastoral care, and conversations that help them navigate life with wisdom and compassion. I work closely with our teaching and wellbeing teams to help students grow into young people of character, purpose and faith – whatever their personal beliefs may be.

I am looking forward to getting to know your children and partnering with you in their journey at Redlands. If you ever have any questions, or if I can support your family in any way, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Blessings,

Ms Kirsten Philips

Head of Junior School

As the students start to settle into the rhythms and routines of the new school year, making and consolidating friendships is an essential, core ingredient in how they feel about school. Establishing strong connections early helps children feel a sense of belonging, build confidence and develop key social skills. Research indicates that friendships evolve as children grow, helping them build communication skills, empathy and resilience. Understanding the typical behaviours at different ages can help parents and educators support children in navigating these important relationships.

For children aged 5-7, friendships are often based on shared activities and immediate enjoyment. Young children may shift friends frequently and may struggle with concepts like sharing and taking turns. Minor disagreements are common, and adult guidance is crucial in helping them develop the emotional vocabulary needed to express their feelings and understand the feelings of others.

Between ages 8-10, friendships deepen, with children beginning to value trust, fairness and loyalty. They start to identify with a particular group of friends and may become more sensitive to social dynamics. This is also the age when conflicts can arise due to misunderstandings or changing group dynamics. Parents can help by encouraging open conversations about feelings and guiding their children through resolving disagreements respectfully.

From 11-12, friendships become even more significant, with peer approval playing a greater role. Children at this stage develop stronger emotional bonds and rely on their friends for support. However, they may also experience exclusion, shifting alliances, or peer pressure. It is important for parents maintain open lines of communication by listening without judgement, offering reassurance and encouraging children to build multiple friendships to broaden their social network.

There are several key behaviours that help children build and maintain friendships, including kindness, active listening, sharing and showing empathy. Encouraging children to take turns, include others in play and resolve conflicts with words rather than frustration can strengthen their social bonds. Parents can support their children by modelling these behaviours at home, role-playing social situations and reinforcing the importance of being a good friend. Reminding children that friendships take effort and that small acts of kindness can make a big difference will help them develop positive, lasting relationships.

Friendships naturally go through ups and downs. Falling out and making up is a normal part of learning social skills. Parents can help by teaching children that friendships can be repaired and that differences do not mean the end of a relationship. Modelling healthy friendships and demonstrating kindness, compromise and forgiveness can be powerful tools in helping children navigate challenges.

If parents are concerned that their child is friends with someone they do not consider a good influence, it is important to approach the situation with care. Instead of forbidding the friendship, which may push children towards secrecy or rebellion, parents can guide their child in recognising healthy and unhealthy friendship traits. Asking open-ended questions about how the friend makes them feel, encouraging a diverse range of friendships, and discussing values like respect and kindness can help children make their own informed decisions. Parents should also model positive relationships and gently steer their child towards friendships that encourage growth and wellbeing.

Encouraging children to talk about their friendships, reassuring them during difficult moments, and teaching them to empathise with others can help them build strong, lasting relationships. If at any point in time you are concerned about your child’s friendships and are unsure how to proceed, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher. Together in partnership, parents and the school can provide a supportive and united network to help guide every child to let their light shine.

Redlands House and PreKindergarten

Can you believe we are in Week 4 already! The new Juniors and Seniors have settled in beautifully and the enjoying their days. We are loving getting to know their personalities and watching them make new friends. As the children start to engage in a wide range of after school activities, it is a great idea to pack them a snack to have beforehand, we all know children are very hungry in the afternoon.

Lucy Hill Library

Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. Reading early and often to your child lays the foundation for reading success and lifelong learning. Reading aloud develops language skills and increases vocabulary, enhances critical thinking and creativity, nurtures emotional growth and self-confidence, creates independent learners and problem solvers and most importantly, cultivates enthusiasm for reading.

At Redlands House we are lucky to have access to a wonderful Early Childhood Library. The senior classes and Pre K visit weekly and borrow books, but did you know that the Lucy Hill Library is open from 2.30pm on Tuesday afternoons for preschool parents? If this time does not suit, you can visit on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday morning from 8am until 8.30am.

Parents may borrow ten books at a time for two weeks. Borrowing allows you to supplement and broaden your child’s choice of books and keeps you aware of what is available for early childhood reading without having to purchase the books.

Building Resilience in Preschool Children

Building resilience in preschool children helps them cope with challenges and develop confidence. Some keyways to foster resilience include:

  • Create a nurturing space with predictable routines to help children feel secure.
  • Allow children to tackle simple problems and guide them with questions to build independence and confidence.
  • Teach children to express and manage their emotions by modelling healthy emotional responses. Encourage empathy, sharing and positive peer interactions to strengthen relationships.
  • Teach children that mistakes are opportunities to learn and focus on praising effort, not just success. Celebrate small wins and encourage independence to boost children’s confidence.
  • Demonstrate positive ways of handling challenges and share your own experiences of overcoming difficulties.
  • Outdoor activities and sports help children build perseverance and handle both success and setbacks.

By nurturing these qualities, we help young children develop the resilience they need to thrive.

Deputy Head of Junior School: Students (K-2)

Well, this week has just flown by! There has been great excitement at lunchtime as our Lunchtime Clubs have been launched. I have the pleasure of running a Friendship Club several times a week, which is a lovely opportunity for me to interact with the students and get to know them better. Our Lunchtime Clubs are also a wonderful chance for students to socialise with children in different classes and Year Groups. Thank you to Ms Anderson for taking the time to organise these clubs, and to the team for supporting our students during their lunch break.

Kindergarten Storytime with Ms Partington

On Monday, Ms Partington, our Deputy Principal, spent the morning with our Kindergarten classes. She read each class a story and gifted them a special bookmark, which they were all thrilled with! Ms Partington was very impressed with how settled the Kindergarten children are at such an early stage of the school year, which is a testament to the hard work of our Kindy teachers, as well as your support as parents.

K-2 Assembly

I am sure that many of you will be pleased to know that from next week, we will be welcoming parents to our K-2 Tuesday assemblies. For the rest of this term, Year 2 will be leading our assemblies on the following dates:

  • 25 February: 2B and 2Y
  • 11 March: 2W and 2R
  • 25 March: 2B and 2Y
  • 8 April:   2W and 2R

We invite parents and families from these classes to attend. K-2 Assemblies are held in Dunnet Hall every other Tuesday; they begin at 1.50pm and will end by 2.20pm. Following each assembly, we ask that families leave the school and return at the normal time to collect their child at the end of the school day.

We look forward to seeing 2B and 2Y families on Tuesday afternoon.

Kindergarten and Year 1 Parent Workshop: Tuesday 4 March at 8.30am

Introducing a new parent workshop specifically catered to the parents of our students in Kindergarten and Year 1, as we know the early school years can be challenging for your child and for you as their parent. In this discussion-based workshop, we shall focus on common challenges we see in our youngest students, such as: morning routines, separation anxiety and transitioning to the classroom. Facilitated by Jemimah Cosme, one of the Junior School Counsellors, the workshop will act as an opportunity for parents to ask questions, receive strategies and provide a safe space to reflect.

Sustainability

We are keen to introduce the children further to the United Nations’ 17 World Sustainability Goals. Year 1 are working on composting, and we are encouraging children to recycle waste food in our Foodcycler, which can be put back into the garden.

If your child or family have been working on living a more sustainable lifestyle, (such as reducing food or water waste, or completing a beach clean-up) then please let us know by sending a short email explaining what you have been doing, along with a photograph to: kpontes@redlands.nsw.edu.au and we will display them in our Reception area.

Borrowing allows you to supplement and broaden your child’s choice of books and keeps you aware of what is available for early childhood reading without having to purchase the books.

The school takes part in the Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC), which is a statewide initiative aimed at increasing reading as a pleasurable activity. In Years K-2 anyone can do the reading. You can read the books to your child, an older sibling or grandparent could also do the reading, or the child can read themselves. The aim is to read 30 books by August. In the Lucy Hill Library, the challenge books are labelled with a sticker, and we have written the code in each book to make the task of recording books as easy as possible.

Many parents who have already taken part in the PRC comment on how much they enjoyed reading with their children, how they found new books they did not know existed and how it prompted them to read with their children. If you would like to take part, or if you have any questions, please come to the library and ask.

We are delighted to announce that Redlands Junior School is becoming a URStrong School.  Research shows that relationships are the heart of wellbeing and when friendships thrive, children flourish.

URSTRONG provides teachers, parents and students with a friendship skills curriculum that help our students establish and maintain healthy relationships, manage conflict with kindness and increase their overall resilience.

Our work with URStrong will include a Day of Friendship where students learn the skills and language to support them in building healthy friendships and navigating the ups and downs of friendships including managing conflict.

In order to build the shared language and understanding in this space, parents are invited to sign up for a free URStrong Family Membership using the link on this page. You will benefit from a number of resources available through this site.

For those wishing to support their son or daughter in their friendships, I can also recommend the following books which I have found very useful in opening discussions regarding this topic.

Secondary Sport

I was reading a great article this week titled Sticking with sport during school years linked to academic success.

Overall, they found that continued sports participation during school years was linked to lower absenteeism, better attention and memory, higher NAPLAN and end-of-school scores and higher odds of studying at university. The study also goes into the differences of individual and team sports.

Those in team sports had better performance on attention and working memory tests, fewer absent days without permission and were more likely to be awarded the HSC or equivalent. Team sports can provide opportunities to work together and foster a sense of belonging.

Winter Sport Registrations – Now Open!

The Winter 2025 Sport Registrations opened on Monday 10 February and will be closing this Friday 21 February at 4pm. Students are reminded to check Redlands Pulse for their sporting commitments, noting that all sports will have 2 mandatory training sessions per week, with all 1st teams (AFL, Football – Boys/Girls, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Tennis – Teams 1-3) having an additional Strength and Conditioning session. These sessions are designed to help ensure youth athletes can actually tolerate their sporting loads and develop strength, power, coordination, balance and resilience, and the gym won’t overload them. This is completed via Clipboard.

Students in Years 7–11:

  1. Choose a Representative Sport where you have 2 training and Saturday Sport commitment
  2. Choose a Non-Representative Sport where you will have a commitment on Thursday afternoons (there are additional costs involved with non-representative sport)

    2. If you are competing in a 2024/25 Summer Representative Sport, you may either compete in a 2025 Winter Representative Sport or complete a Non-Representative Sport, or use the time on Thursday to study.

Moonbah Term 1 Students:

  1. If you completed a Non-Representative Sport for the Summer 2024/25 Season, then you must choose a Winter Representative Sport (you will trial for your teams during the first weeks of Term 2)
  2. If you completed a Representative Sport for the Summer 2024/25 Season you can choose a Non-Representative option or a Winter Representative Sport.

Moonbah Term 2 Students:

The conditions will never be perfect, but real progress comes when you push forward despite the obstacles. Don’t wait for the right moment or for things to feel easy – take action now. General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via the Sports Absence Form available on Redlands Pulse – Secondary School Sport (under ‘Quick Links’ prior to missing any training session or weekly fixture.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2024 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

      • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
      • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)

Junior Sport

Round 1 Summer Sport

Last Saturday , our Representative Sports program commenced in earnest, with all scheduled matches unfolding as planned. It marked the initiation of our newest students’ journey into Representative Sports within the Junior School, as our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 teams took part in round (1) of Girls Football, Mixed Tennis, Mixed Touch Football and Mixed Basketball.

Our Junior teams from Years 3/4 combined had an unbelievable start to their season with all six teams winning at home over Shore at home. Our Senior 5/6 teams secured 3 from 4 against our local neighbour, Mosman Prep. Well done to our Touch Football who had a win and a loss against Newington. While our Tennis side went down they will play their first home match this weekend.

Looking at administrative matters arising from Saturday’s sports activities, we highlight the following points:

  • Please review the Summer Sport team lists on Wednesday evening for any team movements.
  • Players must be attired in full Redlands apparel and have their water bottles placed beside the coach’s kit bag prior to the commencement of matches.
  • Players are expected to meet with their respective coaches 30 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  • The final home Basketball match scheduled in Dunnet Hall requires that team and families to assist in post-game pack up.
  • Players are encouraged to express gratitude to their coaches at the conclusion of each match and to extend three cheers to the opposing team.
  • If your child is absent submit an absence form online through the quick link on our Pulse Sporting page.

As communicated previously, the scheduling of Saturday morning matches for coaches, parents and staff will be updated and available via your Redlands App. This feature enables users to filter the schedule by sport and team, ensuring timely access to any alterations in match times or venues.

Given the fluid nature of sports schedules, we refrain from distributing email updates and urge recipients not to print out the schedule due to potential changes.

Swimming Carnival – Family Information Package

This package was shared with families on Friday. Please take the time to review the information contained within as it will cover all areas of the Carnival for your child from drop off to what events are on offer to how they can be collected

CIS Cricket

Zoe Todd is currently representing CIS Girls Cricket at NSW Championships and has written a report on her experience so far. Well done to Zoe on this achievement. As part of a the CIS Girls Cricket team we are playing this week in the NSW Primary Girls Cricket Carnival in Tuggerah which is on the Central Coast. The team plays 6 pool A matches and then a final against a team from pool B on Thursday afternoon. So far we  have won 4 of the first 5 matches. It is lots of fun to play with a new team. All of the girls are very friendly and very good cricket players. It is quite tiring to play 2 games a day in the sun as often the games last for nearly 4 hours each. We also have some great team chants that I look forward to teaching Roseby when I get back.

Rep Sport Summer Sport Term 1

A reminder to check your app each week in regard to your child’s team as our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY                    in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE        any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE                this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and carers are reminded to check the teams each Friday afternoon for changes that may have taken place at training during the week. Students may at times be asked to fill in for other teams occasionally due to absences etc.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Non-Rep Sport recommencing Term 1

Students were reminded about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport in Term 1. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

Can you please ensure your check your child’ activities to see what sport they are commencing in this term making sure they bring the appropriate gear and or equipment to sport.Non rep families are also reminded to check the home page of Pulse as well as their individual sport pages on a regular basis for updates.

Wednesday Sport inability to train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Callback 2024 Excursion

Last week, our Year 10-12 Curriculum Dance students had the exciting opportunity to attend the 2024 HSC Callback Showcase. This annual showcase highlights some of the best HSC Dance performances and compositions in the state, providing invaluable inspiration for our current dancers.

A particularly special moment was seeing our 2024 Dance Captain, Summer-Eve Smyth, take the stage performing her Core Performance work, You Are A Memory. This was both a proud and motivating experience for our students.

Congratulations to Summer-Eve on this incredible achievement! Your dedication and talent continue to inspire our dancers.

We look forward to seeing what our dancers will achieve in the future!
