Issue 4 2023 Term 1 Week 4 - 23 Feb 2023

From the Principal

It was wonderful to attend the Junior School Swimming Carnival this week and see (as well as hear!) the School Spirit that was on full display. School Spirit is something we often talk about at Redlands, and it is illustrated in so many different ways. It was certainly on display on Wednesday by the Junior School students who were dressed up in their House colours and not just cheering for their Houses, but for all students who were “having a go” and competing on the day – no matter what place they finished in a race.

Over this first month of the year, I have also seen School Spirit displayed in so many other ways. I have seen it in the Prep playground when a student has walked up to a new student who was a little sad, taken their hand and led them to a group of friends to play with. I have seen it at Sport on Saturday when a number of students stayed after their Basketball game or showed up on their own to cheer for their mates. And I have seen it at the school gates in the mornings with Year 12 students warmly welcoming and interacting with younger students.

It is these little acts of kindness and support that grow into the larger displays of School Spirit that I saw at the Junior School Swimming Carnival on Wednesday. We have so much to proud of at Redlands, and this year I hope all students continue to be proud of themselves, their peers and their School.

I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet many parents and carers at our Twilight in the Garden on Friday evening. After the disruptions over the past few years due to COVID-19 and La Nina, it was wonderful to be able to gather together outside on the beautiful Fahl Garden and have an opportunity to come together and connect as a community. I would like to thank the various RPFA representatives, as well as members of the Community Engagement and Facilities teams, for their efforts in planning and setting up for this event.

I am sure like me, many of you have been affected by the images of destruction over the last few weeks in Türkiye, Syria and New Zealand due to recent natural disasters. In both our Junior School and Secondary School assemblies this week, students led our community in prayers for the people of those countries who are currently suffering, and I was touched to see our Year 12 Service Captains lead a fundraiser on Valentine’s Day to support the communities affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria. I would like to also extend our thoughts and prayers to any Redlands families who might have loved ones affected by these recent natural disasters.

Community Update

It was lovely to welcome our community back on to the campus at Twilight in the Garden, held under clear blue skies and sunshine last Friday evening.  We understand that we are not just a school, we are a community and we recognise the important sense of place that Redlands represents. My thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the event organising committee and our operations team for delivering a such a wonderful event. We look forward to welcoming more of our community onsite as the year unfolds.

Speaking of which …

There has been a great deal of excitement as the Autumn Fair banners went up around the School this week. This highly anticipated and much loved community event will take place on Saturday, 18 March on our Senior Campus and is a day centred around food, fun and entertainment, showcasing the community’s diversity and talent.  Thank you to our dedicated and passionate volunteers who continue to put their hand up in support of the Autumn Fair. Tickets are now on sale and wristbands and coupons can be pre-purchased here to receive a special discount. Further details on the Autumn Fair can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of other parent and carer events that connect our community.

It was a pleasure to attend the first meetings of our Junior and Secondary School Parent Contact Groups (PCG) this year, where I met Class and Year Group Parents and shared the activities and projects currently underway in Community Engagement. Our PCGs continue to explore ways to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life.  If you are looking to connect with our community for support then please reach out to the passionate and diverse experience of our Class and Year Group Parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support Redlands families.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kindest regards

Twilight in the Garden

It was wonderful to see so many or our parents and staff come together and enjoy a warm evening in the Fahl Garden, an open outdoor area in front of the Redlands Learning Hub, named after Redlander Lynette Fahl who sadly passed away in 1963. Her father, Mr Richard Frederick Fahl, bequeathed his estate to Redlands to create the Anne Lynette Fahl Memorial Bursary in memory of his daughter.

Thank you to our performers – Ashton, Tamis and Zac, Redlanders 2022, who played beautifully throughout the evening. This trio who started to play while at Redlands, have been accepted to the Sydney Conservatorium. Congratulations and best of luck in your next chapter!

Thank you to the RPFA Committee and volunteers for organising this very popular event.

Autumn (Spring) Fair – a Long Tradition and Impact for the School

This highly anticipated wider community event with a long history is just around the corner.

For history lovers there are some highlights from our Archives:

The history of the ‘Autumn’ Spring Fair goes all the way back to 1893 when it was referred to as ‘The School Bazaar’. This inaugural event raised funds for the yet to be built North Shore Hospital and 50 pounds was raised, equivalent to $9000 at the time, when the number of students was no more than 50.

In the early 1900s the re-named ‘Garden Fete’ raised money for hospitals, including the newly open Royal North Shore Hospital. In 1915 it was the ‘Australia Day Fete’, and in 1919 ‘The Old Girl’s Fete’ raised money for the Children’s Hospital.

By 1932 the Fete was supporting the Old Girls’ Union Bursary Fund, and in 1934 the Old Girls gifted a domestic Science Room in Liggins Building plus another bursary.

In 1942, it was Wartime. The “American Tea’ raised fund for Red Cross and was opened by Mrs HV Evatt (Redlander Alice Sheffer), the wife of the Attorney General and later Minister for Education.

In 1945 the Old Girls Union founded the Roseby Library, and by 1957 the funds were equipping a Science laboratory. This is the first time that parents are mentioned in being involved with the Fair and its fundraising objectives.

In 1958 a Parent run fete raised 950 pounds for the School Development Fund (worth about $30,000 in today’s currency) and by 1961 the first fete run by the Parents Association took place.

From 1981 the event has been known as the Spring Fair and has supported the purchase of school buses, the purchase of High Country Campus, a Fitness Centre, a Senior Arts Precinct and the Redlands Learning Hub.

The Redlander Alumni Café is an integral part of the fair and is run by the Redlander Alumni Association. This is a wonderful opportunity to come and learn about the School’s rich history since it was founded in 1884 or simply come and enjoy a cup of coffee.

If you are a Redlander parent, please visit the Café at 1.30pm for a special gathering of alumni who have children currently attending Redlands. Natalie Davis, RL 1987, the current President of the Redlanders Alumni Association has been coordinating these efforts.

For any further details regarding the Autumn Fair, please visit the RPFA section.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Next week’s walk on Wednesday 1 March will be around Clontarf/Seaforth, and will be followed by a brunch at one of our Parents of Alumni. Meet at 5 Linkmead Ave at 8.40am with a plate to share.

Deep in the Learning and Activities

Now that we are in Week 4, students are deep into their learning and associated activities such as Sport and Cocurricular. Yr 8-12 are heading into their first round of assessments for the year and should now be following a disciplined routine or schedule at home, to support their success as learners this term.  On Monday morning, all Yr 8 to 12 students met with their Tutor to discuss their strengths and areas for developments and identify suitable goals for the term. These Coaching Conversations, supported by iGrow data, are crucial to students taking responsibility for their learning and support their capacity to be data literate. As part of the iGrow Coaching Conversations and Goal Setting process, students are encouraged to create a ‘Life-School Fit Schedule.’ These schedules can be weekly or termly and should make visible the balance required for students to realise their academic habits-based goals and engage in out-of-school ‘life’ including social life, family life, sporting/co-curricular life and digital life as well as ensuring that they are giving attention to the amount of time they sleep, unwind and rest. A disciplined schedule enables students to identify imbalances and make adjustments, a life-ready skill. Many students have indicated that they enjoy and ‘need’ a schedule as it provides them with a supportive structure and makes them feel confident and in control of the various commitments and priorities they are managing at this point in their lives. If any student would like some help in creating a ‘Life-School Fit Schedule’ they are encouraged to reach out to their Tutor or to the appropriate Academic Dean. Ms Rolon has been busy all week meeting with Yr 9 students and co-negotiating schedules with them.

Below are some images of students setting goals with their tutor or Year Advisor as part of the coaching conversations held on Monday, prompted by iGrow data.

Yr 7 Camp – our Yr 7 students are enjoying their first Secondary School Camp experience. They return from High Country Campus on Friday.

What Else has Happened this Week?

Yr 12 HSC and IB students have engaged in their Core learning sessions. HSC students all attended an informative and student-led presentation on Wednesday morning where they learned about the HSC Service program from Service Captains, Charlotte Scamps and Simone Franceschi.

Yr 10 students engaged into a deep dive of their identity and friendships this week. The Man Cave and Tomorrow Woman events saw them singing, fun-fighting, collaborating, sharing and generally enjoying each other’s company.

Yr 10 boys had the privilege of spending the day with a passionate team from Man Cave, breaking down stereotypes and developing lifelong skills to promote healthy relationships with others. The activities involved team building, competitions, group discussions and reflection time. It was a truly inspiring day which empowered the boys to be the best versions of themselves and to be role models within their school and community.

Tomorrow Woman

It was a privilege today to be part of an all-women panel sharing experiences and advice with Yr 10 girls. Hearing Yr 12 students, Josie Simpson and Maya Little, share their stories with the Yr 10 students was an emotional experience – their messages were powerful and resonant.

On Tuesday, our Yr 12 student leaders led a Yr 10 to 12 Assembly, providing positive and inspirational messages about key issues and events taking place in the Secondary School.

CIS Cup Football Win

The CIS boys football team were victorious against Penrith Anglican College on Wednesday morning. A huge congratulations to the team!

Financial Literacy Opportunities for Yr 9

Article from our Innovation and Entrepreneurial Learning Strategist, Ms Green

In early January, an article appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald declaring Australia’s youth are precariously positioned when it comes to financial literacy. It’s fascinating that one of the wealthiest counties in the world can also have such low levels of nous when it comes to their money. The masthead went on to claim that more than one-third of Australians are financially illiterate and the most impacted group are those between 15-24.

The business of school is to improve ‘literacies’, whether they are foundational literacies, wherein students apply core skills to everyday tasks, competencies such as the ability to solve problems or character qualities such as initiative. In our digital age, it can feel like the literacies are ever more complex. It comes as no surprise then that Redlands is taking a proactive stance on financial literacy by extending upon the core curriculum. Indeed, ‘life readiness’ must include a level of personal responsibility when it comes to managing our own finances.

Our Yr 9 Commerce students were introduced to Elladex founder and CEO Shivani Gopal as part of their Term 1 study of ‘Consumer and Financial Decisions’. Shivani ran a 90 minute workshop with the cohort where they canvassed the history of money by tracking its evolution from bartering to the gold standard to cryptocurrency. They applied the five principles of money to its various iterations to investigate why particular forms of currency succeeded where others failed. Finally, she took the students through the basics of investment, that is, what to do with money when you have it.

One of the most interesting myths Shivani tackled is that having money must mean you are financially literate. Earnings are one piece of the puzzle, as Jess Irvine put it in the Sydney Morning Herald, navigating an increasingly sophisticated and complex world full of financial risk and temptations, like cryptocurrencies and buy-now, pay-later schemes demands early intervention. Add to that understanding insurance and superannuation as mechanisms to plan for unexpected life events and increased longevity as well as building the broader contextual awareness necessary to weather periods of economic instability. It was pleasing to hear that students retained key messages after the incursion, such as ensuring they are on the same page financially as any potential future partner and to discuss early and often their plans and aspirations.

I have also been interested to learn about the enterprising spirit that is alive and well at Redlands. Many students have shared their ‘side hustles’ whether it’s neighbourhood jobs, drop shipping or online platform operations. We look forward to continuing to guide and grow their budding entrepreneurialism.

Shivani concluded the session by asking students to set a long term financial goal for themselves. I had no idea that so many Redlands students aspire to boat ownership! Shivani encouraged students to think less about the actual goal and more about the conversations and planning required to get there. By articulating your goals you are more likely to connect into the networks that will help you get there. It’s also vital to temper the huge aspirations with one eye on the realistic. Our Yr 9 students will undertake a learning task later in the term that asks them to research and plan for their first year out of home. I hope it makes for some interesting dinner time conversations as students begin to think about their financial futures.

Rapid Antigen Tests Available

To help protect our community, each student will be given a box of 5 test kits. We encourage the use of these kits over the coming months. Please remember to keep your child at home if they are unwell, regardless of the test result.

Settling into Being a Senior Student – Building Resilience

Our young people need our support. They have started a rigorous workload, they have brought energy into this new level of expectation and challenge while at the same time seeming to feel quite overwhelmed. This cohort is extremely capable, extremely enthusiastic and motivated. They have the potential to leave an incredible legacy for themselves and others at Redlands and it is inspirational to see them already moving in this direction.

However, with the excitement of a new course load, new classes, new teachers and new opportunities also comes stress. In Coaching Conversations this week, students have recognised the need to utilise some study techniques and strategies they might not have tried before this year. Students have also recognised their own feelings of anxiousness and their quick responses to difficult tasks. The need for stick-to-it-iveness is essential and our young people are seeking reassurance and encouragement to pause, breathe, make a plan and recognise the need to stick to it and take it moment by moment and day by day. They are being encouraged to own their part in making a class, a task or a situation successful and to try new things they may not have previously considered.

As we continue to work together to support our young people at school and at home, this Special Report from SchoolTV provides several encouraging, conversation-prompting and supportive questions you may consider asking your child to help build their resilience and ability to stick with a challenge.

Take the Sting Out Character LAB: Teens don’t mean to be unkind

Today, I’ve asked Lisa Damour to share her Tip of the Week.

“Pack your bags! We’re going on a guilt trip!” one of my teenage daughters said to the other.

I’d just made a passive-aggressive comment about the dirty dishes they’d left in the sink, so maybe I deserved that remark. But it still stung. And if my kids have such an easy time giving pointed feedback at home, might they also be unkind when they’re out and about?

All parents probably worry about raising kids who allow themselves to be jerks to others. But here’s something I know about development: Adolescence is a time of heightened friction at home, in part because teenagers become acutely perceptive of their parents’ shortcomings and are often quick to point them out. They do this because they are coming to terms with the fact that we, the only parents they have, are far from perfect. They hope for us to improve, especially before they move out, so they tend to save their toughest feedback for us.

So how should you react when your teen hits you with zingers? Your teen knows you well—often better that you know yourself—and their observations are usually spot on. But they also know when they’ve crossed a line, and they expect to be called on it. It’s important to remind kids that all people—parents included—are more likely to make good use of their input when it’s delivered with compassion.

Don’t be defensive when teens criticize you. That either closes down communication or escalates friction, sometimes into a full-blown conflict—two outcomes that serve no one well.

Do push back if their feedback is more hostile than helpful. Consider saying, “I’m sure you have a point, but we don’t speak to each other that way around here. I’m interested in what’s on your mind, but you need to let me know in a kinder way.” I’m in constant awe of how quickly my daughters are growing and changing. And thanks to their keen commentary on my not-so-endearing quirks, I’m growing and changing too.

With warmth and gratitude,

Lisa

Man Cave

On Wednesday, 22 February, Yr 10 boys had the privilege of spending the day with a passionate team from Man Cave, breaking down stereotypes and developing lifelong skills to promoting healthy relationships with others. The activities involved team building, competitions, group discussions and reflection time. It was a truly inspiring day which empowered the boys to be the best versions of themselves and to be role models within their school and community.

“Emotion and empathy, evoked. The Man Cave experience provided a safe and supportive space for my classmates and I, with a focus on compassion, emotional intelligence and improving relationships. I particularly enjoyed the competitive ‘Shazam’ challenge, guessing songs in a group with my peers, as well as the ‘check-in’ session, a voluntary opportunity for anyone to speak about hardships or achievements they wished to share. I left the Man Cave session feeling empowered and equipped with new skills and practical tools to take care of my mental health, and to support those around me in overcoming adversities.”

Career Assessment for Yr 10 2023

As part of the Yr 10 Careers Program, and ahead of the Stage 6 Course and Subject Selection Process, Redlands offers a career assessment opportunity to all Yr 10 students. Redlands have engaged Career Avenues run by Dr Marian Kratzing, a Careers Psychologist. Dr Kratzing has developed a unique career profiling system which she and her colleagues provide to many independent schools in Sydney. https://careeravenues.com/

We encourage every student to participate in this opportunity, as the results are interesting and surface important questions prior to the Stage 6 Course and Subject Selection. The exercise also provides a great start for research into potential tertiary courses and future pathways.

A letter was sent home to all parents and carers, however if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact:

Swimming Carnival

Back in its usual Term 1 slot this year and in the grandiose arena of the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre, yesterday’s Junior School Swimming Carnival was an uplifting event that brought our Junior School community together for our first House event of 2023.

I spent most of the day in the stands with students and staff and was able to see first-hand the genuine sense of House spirit, connection, passion and camaraderie between the students, which was both inspiring and heart-warming in equal measures. Many told me how they had simply loved taking part and getting House points, regardless of the place they came. Others proudly shared how they had been involved far more than they had planned to as the energy of the day and the support of friends gave them the courage to compete in either pool. This is truly the essence of a House event that seeks to involve every child.

As I stated at the end of the event, I acknowledge and am grateful to all the staff and coaches involved in every aspect of the event which allows an event of this magnitude to run as smoothly and as efficiently as it did. We were also thrilled to welcome so many families and friends to enjoy the carnival again.

On behalf of the students, my appreciation is extended to our Sports team, ably led by Mr Dunne, who oversaw the very detailed pre-carnival preparation, the day’s schedule and the playlist! It really is such a joy to see the stands devoid of students as they immerse themselves fully in the day and particular congratulations to Dumolo House who won the overall trophy.

We now shift gears and venues as we look forward to our rescheduled House Athletics Carnival which takes place next month at Homebush and promises to be another joyous occasion.

Cybersafety Education

This week, Yrs 5 and 6 students and all staff were involved in our first Cybersafety education sessions with ySafe. Our longstanding partnership with ySafe, industry leaders in this important ever-changing landscape, has allowed us to continue to review and refine the educational experiences for our students, in particular, to ensure that these sessions are both relevant and impactful.

Later next term, ySafe will run age-appropriate sessions with Yrs 3 & 4 and will also lead a parent seminar again.

As mentioned before, I strongly encourage every parent to explore Redlands’ Cybersafety Hub for resources, tips and information as needed.

Student Leadership

Each year, we recognise and provide student leadership opportunities for our whole Yr 6 cohort over the year as they lead our student body in different ways. This week, further student leadership roles were provided in the areas of wellbeing, technology and library and we congratulate these students on their successful applications and wish them well this year.

Yr 4 Excursion – Maritime Museum and Hyde Park Barracks

by Madeleine Hogue, Class 4B

On Tuesday, Year 4 went on an excursion to the city with the help of class parents and, of course, the teachers. Our excursion took place in the city Maritime Museum (on a model of The Endeavour, Captain Cook’s Ship) and inside the Hyde Park Barracks (where English convicts worked).

We went to these specific places because of our Unit of Inquiry subject: Discovery Creates Change. Convicts built the Hyde Park Barracks and these barracks are now a museum that Year 4 navigated. I think Year 4 would agree that briefly relaxing in some modified convict hammocks (yes, hammocks!) was a highlight, and being in the front of the Endeavour, in a large, spacious cabin, could be a great highlight as well. In that cabin at the prow of the boat was a bolt that had been to space, on a space shuttle called the Endeavour! This is connected to Year 4’s learning because, remember, Captain Cook sailed the Endeavour to Australia and the convicts came to Australia. Year 4 and I enjoyed this excursion, because it was fun and meaningful.

iGrow

During assembly this week, our Head of Learning Analytics, Mr Ben Castelli introduced iGrow to the students. This is an exciting interactive data platform that has been developed by Redlands to visualise student growth within our holistic learning framework. This is up and running in the Secondary School and throughout Term 1, students will have the opportunity to provide feedback that will shape the development of a bespoke dashboard and growth coaching model for the primary campus as well.

I look forward to sharing more about this bespoke program that will further enhance our knowledge of each child and how we support their continued growth.

FINAL CALL: Parent Seminar: Sleep and Healthy Routines

Date:               Tuesday 28 February 2023 (Week 5)
Time:               8:30am-9:30am
Location:         Junior School Arnold Library

We are delighted to extend a warm invitation to all Junior and Prep School parents to our first parent seminar of 2023. The session will be led by our team of expert in-house counsellors and the Dean of Students and focus on Sleep and Healthy Routines.

All of us need regular, high-quality sleep, and helping your child get a good night’s sleep can enhance both their general functioning during the day, and their mental health and well-being. The establishment and development of healthy routines is without a doubt a critical aspect to help parents prepare their child for a sound sleep.

The session will particularly focus on:

– the importance of sleep and its connection to brain and mood

– common difficulties: nightmares, digital media, separation

– how to create and implement healthy routines

Registration:   Please fill out this form

If you have any questions on the focus areas of the session you would like us to address, please fill out this anonymous voluntary form.

We look forward to seeing many of our families at this event.

Working Alongside UNICEF

On Monday afternoon a group of Year 6 students participated in a co-design session with a representative from UNICEF Australia. The aim of the session was to design a Term 3 unit of inquiry program that focuses on natural disasters. The students were invited to share their insights on behalf of their cohort around what makes a memorable learning experience, how they would like to demonstrate their learning and how we can ensure the learning in meaningful, relevant and connected to the real world. We will partner with UNICEF on this exciting learning opportunity and experience and this partnership will provide our students with the view of several perspectives in a natural disaster such as philanthropists (e.g. UNICEF Australia), first responders, Indigenous Australians and Government (State and Federal).

Excitingly UNICEF are hoping that this program of work would be part of a resource bank that they could disseminate more widely to schools across Australia and even globally.

Term 1 Junior School Class Parent Meeting

On Tuesday, It was delightful to connect with our 2023 class parent representatives and I am grateful for them volunteering in these important community connection roles. In the first meeting, our new Principal and Deputy Principal, Mr Sean Corcoran and Ms Sabine Partington, were also in attendance and Mr Corcoran was able to share his vision of the year ahead with this parent group.

Unnamed Belongings

In assembly, I asked our students to take responsibility to ensure that all of their belongings were named and that they took care of them. Of course, we know that from time to time, students will misplace items but we can always repatriate them if named. If required, I encourage parents to remind children of this and give them the task of checking their belongings are named, especially lunch bags, drink bottles and sports clothing.

Rapid Antigen Tests

To help protect our community, each student will be given a box of 5 test kits. We encourage the use of these kits and more importantly, please remember to keep your child at home if they are unwell, regardless of the test result.

Redlands ySafe

This week we welcomed David Smith, the NSW State Education Manager for ySafe, back to Redlands. David shared his expertise on the education and wellbeing of our students in the current digital space. Through example sharing and current research statistics, David’s message continues to be “alert rather than alarmed” and to follow a few simple principles when talking about and practicing Cyber Safety with students.  Easily remembered as the ABCs for Cyber Safety they are:

A – manage Access

B – set Boundaries

C – openly Communicate

David will return to Redlands in Term 2 for further student and parent sessions.

Parents and carers are encouraged to explore the Redlands Cyber Safety Hub. It is a valuable resource to support your child. It includes a range or relevant topics such as:

  • Cyber safety guides
  • Screen time recommendations
  • Creating a safe home
  • Gaming
  • Setting up parental controls
  • App and Game reviews

Redlands iGrow

At Prep Assembly next week, Mr Ben Castelli (Head of Learning Analytics) will introduce iGrow to our students. This is an exciting interactive data platform that has been developed by Redlands to visualise student growth within our holistic learning framework. Throughout Term 1, students will have the opportunity to provide feedback that will shape the development of a bespoke dashboard and growth coaching model. The voices of the Prep students will be important as their perspective will start their Redlands learning narrative.

For some of our new parents, Redlands iGrow will be totally new. If you want to learn more about iGrow, I encourage you to have a talk to myself, your classroom teacher, Mrs Smith, or email Mr Castelli directly (bcastelli@redlands.nsw.edu.au).

Secondary Sport

Last weekend I was lucky enough to get down to Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron to see the Sailing group work on some tactical skills on the harbour, a wonderful place for Sport on a sunny Saturday morning! The team at RSYS have a great set up and we are thankful for the program they have created for our sailors!

It is fitting that this week we speak about the next Value in which we as a community are growing within the Redlands Sport programs. Respect. We are asking all members to demonstrate integrity and character in all your actions and interactions, whether that is with your coaches, your teammates, your opposition and those watching you. Show inclusivity, courtesy, consideration and understanding towards others, and finally to develop authentic and trusting relationships between students, coaches and the wider school community.

This weekend we enter the last round of the ISA Summer Competition. As for some of the Yr 12 students, this will be the last time they compete for Redlands, it would be great to get as much support for those teams as possible.

Maddie Boris: Although getting into foul trouble early in the game, Maddie continued to show great hustle on both offence and defence by diving on loose balls, chasing fast break lay ups as well as running the lanes hard for an easy kick aheads. Not only this, Maddie demonstrated a positive attitude regardless of score which kept her team mates motivated.

Jove Hazell: Jove was really consistent on Saturday, especially on the defensive end. She always hustled back on defence no matter how far she was from the ball. She also did a great job at sharing the ball on offence and moving to create space for her teammates.

Heidi Charles: Heidi was a beast for us on both ends of the court. She hustled hard on defence, leading our teams in blocks as well as points. She was attentive, brought the energy and was always there to help her teammates.

Charlie Hoskin: Charlie has improved so much this season and is doing a great job contributing at both ends of the court. On Saturday she was an absolute weapon fighting for the ball, creating over 6 jump balls in the game.

“Fab 5” Boys:

Kane Thompson: Definition of “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog”. Kane put his body on the line against much larger opponents and played right to the end regardless of the result.

Oliver Wood: Even though the boys had a hard day at the office, with lots of them hitting the floor after heavy contact, Oli kept engaged and positive. He has worked hard on his outside shooting and during this match he landed a 3 point swish, which made everyone happy.

Zain Naqvi: Zain was unstoppable to help the team break out to a monster lead. You could see how badly Zain WANTED it. He crashed boards, drove to the basket and was an integral part of the team getting a nice lead. He had the other team looking for the physio with all the ankles he was breaking.

Andreas Kokkinnis: Andreas always comes with a positive attitude to games. He hit some big shots for us to try and close the gap. He was great at getting his teammates involved with good lead passes in transition and worked hard to get some good defensive stops.

Erol Jackson: Erol hit to massive 3’s in overtime of the 3×3 grand final. His effort and attitude were fantastic and you can tell he truly enjoys playing the game and trying to improve.

Coach of the Week

Cooper Wilks: Cooper is such a great role model for our students and he has done a fantastic job all year. Cooper had the 15As working well together as a team to get as best result as possible. Cooper also mounted an incredible comeback with his 15As team who started down in a big deficit early.

Friends of Basketball are delighted to invite Redlands Basketballers in Years 8-12, their parents and coaches to a dinner to celebrate the end of the Basketball season and the achievements of our players this year. Fitness Centre

We have had a wonderful start to the year in the Redlands Fitness Centre with great numbers across all sessions in the first week. Led by our brand new Yr 7s, we have had a variety of circuit-based training sessions blended alongside our individual sessions for our more senior athletes. I could not be more excited by what is to come within this space in the coming weeks and as we lead into the finals for our Summer Rep Sport.

For all students using the Fitness Centre space please continue to be aware of the following changes to the use of the Redlands Fitness Centre. Students are not able to leave school grounds at the conclusion of their sessions. Students are required to change back into their school uniforms and prepare for 1st Period. To assist with this transition, the Fitness Centre will now be open from 6:30am – 7:45am, with students able to join throughout the morning.

The Fitness Centre is the perfect space for students to build strength, speed and flexibility, key components of all Rep Sports at Redlands. Our aim at the Fitness Centre is to create an open and inclusive space for all Redlands athletes and for all students to start their day off on a great note.

Sessions start promptly at 6:30am and have sessions tailored towards athletes of any ability, size, or skill.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions or the Fitness Centre space as a whole.

Keep an eye out for our Trainer of the Week which will be announced in Note Day. Our Week 1 and Week 2 winners will be announced next week.

Rowing Dinner 4 April 2023

Please keep Tuesday 4 April free in your diaries for the annual Rowing Dinner.  This is our chance to celebrate the achievements of the rowers and say thank you to the coaches who made it possible.  This year we will be returning to Zest for the dinner and will be sending out information on how to buy tickets in the next few weeks.

Foot of the River 30 April – 28 May

The rowing fun doesn’t stop at the end of the season.  Once again, the “Foot of the River” regatta will be taking place in May, giving you a chance to experience Redlands Rowing for yourselves.

Foot of the River is a fun rowing activity for parents, families and friends of our rowers.  You will get to train in a quad scull under the direction of Redlands coaches, and then compete against other parent and family crews in races over 500m.  It is a chance to feel what it is like for our student rowers and an opportunity to train on beautiful Middle Harbour. Sign up as an individual and we will assign you a boat, or put your own quad together with family, friends or colleagues. No rowing experience is necessary, and crew selection and training will take into account your fitness and previous rowing history.

Training will be twice a week from 30 April to 27 May.  The regatta will take place on 28 May at Davidson Park, Forestville.  A sign-up link will be sent out soon, so get planning your crew.

Sailing

Redlands Sailing this week finally received better conditions to go sailing with sunny days with moderate wind from the northeast. The Pacer sailors are preparing for their upcoming teams racing regattas with a focus on starts whilst beginning to understand some tactics in more depth., whilst the Elliotts are working on mastering their boat control and handling in the larger boats. The racing program is starting to ramp up towards the regatta, and getting everyone to the training focused and prepared to train with intensity is critical.

The coaches request that all sailors to watch this 20-minute video on racing rules for teams racing.

Please watch this video

Saturday Sailing is a race day with the Redlands Series with a BBQ after for all the sailors and parents.

Yr 7s are away this week with camp but are expected to be at sport on Saturday, as it is with all sports, not just sailing.

Tuesday sailing this week is group B, and the bus will leave from the Adams Centre carpark.

Sailing Dinner Date Change – 30 March

The Redlands dinner has been changed to 30 March due to clashes with the School Musical; this is just a save-the-date as we await RSYS to confirm their availability.

Junior Sport

Our annual Junior School Swimming Carnival took place at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Wednesday. Our first House meetings on the oval on Monday gave our House Captains the first opportunity to address their ‘troops’ and set the tone for the carnival ahead. Highlights from the war cry practice can be viewed here. In the first of our big three carnivals there was much excitement leading up to the first race, our youngest swimmers being the Under 8s and Under 9s 25m and 50m Freestyle event. It was very exciting to see these students participate in their first Junior School Carnival.

Knowing the carnivals can be long for spectators, children and adults in the stands were kept entertained by some dancing competitions with various playlists. It was great to see our war cry competitions were back again in full voice after its return last year. This year there a few new additions, the creation of a separate House Spirit trophy that was presented to the winning House on the day. This trophy, as well as certificates handed out by the House Captains, will continue across all our carnivals for recognition related to non-performance-based results.

With the continuation of the entrant number system this year we can track the participation rate of all houses as well as being able to provide feedback to students across their age groups in the strokes they entered.

The Class Relays in the 25m pool, organised by the teachers and in some cases the students themselves, proved to be a hit with some fierce rivalry between the classes. Thank you to the parents and families who attended who travelled out Homebush to support the carnival as well as our House Captains and Sport Captains for whom this was their first carnival as leaders at an all-day event.

Congratulations to Dumolo House who won the House cup. Congratulations to House Captains Daisy Nassar and Harrison Bird who led their team to victory and got to raise the cup in victory for 2023.

Winning House

1st Place                  Dumolo 1658 points

2nd Place                Cowper 1413 points

3rd Place                 Roseby 1219 points

Further to this, the winning House will have their House banner displayed on the school oval for the next two weeks in recognition of their achievement for all students to see.

CHORAL PROGRAM

Junior Voices Auditions

Whilst the rest of our extension ensemble auditions have come to a wrap for this session, auditions for Junior Voices will commence next week. Amazingly, we have received overwhelming expressions of interest with over 70% of registered Junior Choir students interested in auditioning for Junior Voices. Thank you to all the students who have registered. We look forward to hearing you shine in your auditions next week!

Extracurricular Music

Private Tuition Enrolments

Although the enrolments for private instrumental lessons have now closed for Term 1, we welcome new enrolments and lessons will commence at the beginning of Term 2.

Rock Bands

Thank you to all those who have expressed interest in the Redlands Rock Band program! This particular stream, whilst exciting, does present us with unique challenges to formation. As stated in the EOI form, each band awaits its launch until a vocalist, guitarist, keyboard player, bass player and drummer of the same learning stage have all expressed interest, and then we navigate the challenges of school timetables to find a workable session time for this new band.  If you have expressed interest in the Rock Band program, rest assured that your application has been noted and we will be in contact as soon as we have found you some peers on complimentary instruments.

AMEB Examinations

The Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) exam registrations are now open and exams will take place between 26 August and 23 September.  The Enrolment Form is here and will be available on Redlands Pulse.

For students in one of our Musicianship Classes, exam enrolments are also open and the form is linked below.
