Issue 4 2022 - 24 Feb 2022

From The Principal

I thank all members of the Redlands community for your support in implementing our COVID-safe plan, your cooperation in the RAT screening process and in keeping students home from school when experiencing symptoms or when identified as household contacts. We have been very pleased with the low numbers of community cases recorded to date this term. A letter will be sent to all parents and carers tomorrow, which will outline our updated COVID-safe plan, in response to recent communication from the NSW Government.

Last weekend I enjoyed the opportunity to join the Rowing students, parents and coaches at the Redlands Boat Shed for a significant boat naming ceremony in which two single skulls were named after last year’s Rowing Captains, Emily Barrelle and Alex Holtheuer. We are most fortunate to have a wonderful culture in the Boat Shed, with passionate coaches, many of whom are alumni, led by former Swedish Olympian, Head Coach Anders Batemyr and highly respected Director of Rowing, James Petering.

In our Strategic Plan we have a key focus on supporting our staff to undertake and publish educational research, along with support for presenting at conferences to share professional expertise. Head of Teaching and Learning, Matthew Bentley, has recently been invited to present a paper on research by the Professional Learning Teams at Redlands, at the Leadership for Professional Learning Symposium to be held at Dublin City University in June. Matthew has also recently been asked to present to staff at Wesley College in Melbourne on the process and outcomes from our Professional Learning Teams project.

Director of Digital Innovation, Mary-Lou O’Brien, is presenting this week at the ICT in Schools NSW event, Head of Community Engagement, Grant Birse, has been asked to present at an Educate Plus National webinar and Japanese Teacher, Yuji Okawa, has recently been asked to contribute a chapter to an educational research text on Japanese teaching. These are just a sample of the significant contributions that our staff make to broader educational research and development.

Community Update

We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong and generous tradition of service and giving. Parents and friends of the School proudly support the enrichment of our students’ lives in many ways, through regular donations and by giving one of the most special gifts of all – their time.

In 2021, we celebrated the very special milestone of 100 years since the awarding of our first scholarship, though our origins of gifting education go back even further to the early childhood of one of our co-founders, Clara Arnold. Since then, our community has supported the education of many talented young students who have gone on to be leaders in Australian society and recognised for their service with numerous honours. These were young people who would not have been able to afford a Redlands education without the support of a scholarship.

Creating a community where we encourage every young person’s unique talents and capabilities, for a more equitable, collaborative, creative and connected global society captures the essence of our motto to ‘Let your light shine’. This ethos formed the foundation of the 2010 launch of our Redlands Scholarship Fund, in order to continue to grow opportunities for exceptionally talented students who will make a valuable contribution to both our Redlands community and to society, as well as enhancing the diversity of our student body.

Our means-tested scholarships represent the very heart of what I know we all hold true – the profound value we place upon education for uplifting all young people, combined with the values of honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, fairness and moral courage we each strive to inspire and instil in every student.

This year, we are launching a Scholarship Appeal to honour Dr Sue Morey, a greatly respected and much admired Redlander who attended the School from Kindergarten and graduated as Dux of the Class of 1959. Dr Morey’s service to the development and promotion of improved public health services in Australia was recognised with her being awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 1999. To read more about Dr Morey, a truly remarkable Redlander, along with an update on the 2022 Legacy Gift, please visit the Foundation section of Note Day.

The Second Hand Uniform Sale got underway last week and my thanks to the army of volunteers, led by the Redlands Parent and Friends Association and Uniform Shop, for their assistance in delivering this important event. Clean pre-loved uniforms can be donated through the Uniform Shop up to Wednesday 2 March. Proceeds from the sale will be dedicated to the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund and more detail can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day.

It was a pleasure to Zoom into the first meetings of our Junior School and Secondary School Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) this year, where we connected with Class Parents and discussed the needs of our community through the dedicated and passionate parents who work on behalf of us all to ensure we remain connected, included and supported. It’s fair to say that there was a great deal of excitement around the scheduling of Twilight Drinks for Friday 1 April. More details on this event will follow in the weeks to come and in the interim please save the date in your schedule.

A reminder that the Redlands App is available for download in both the App Store for Apple users and Google Play for those using Android. The App provides a quick and easy connection with the School for all of the important information our community seeks – contact information, term dates, events, sport fixtures, school and absentee notices and other key links – all from the palm of your hand.

Thank you for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Foundation

Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund

This year our efforts continue to support the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund and we will be launching a Scholarship Appeal to honour a much respected Redlander who attended the School from Kindergarten and graduated as Dux of the Class of 1959, Dr Sue Morey. Dr Morey went on to study medicine at Sydney University and in 1979 was awarded her Master’s Degree in Public Health from Harvard University in the USA.

Dr Morey made an enormous contribution with over 60 years of service in the area of community health within cities as well as across regional and rural Australia and is perhaps best known for her dedicated leadership as Chief Health Officer for NSW from 1988 to 1994. In 1999 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to the development and promotion of improved public health services.

She has stayed connected to Redlands and our community, and we are honouring and celebrating her outstanding service achievements and standards of excellence with the establishment of a new means- tested scholarship. This will help our School provide a life changing opportunity to a talented young person who would not otherwise be able to attend a School like Redlands. Please contact me directly if you wish to receive any further details.

Legacy Gift of Class of 2022

Help Needed

Second Hand Uniform Sale

We are seeking good quality uniforms (especially winter and sports) for the second hand uniform sale. Please ensure uniforms are clean and stain free. Kindly drop off at the Uniform Shop (closed Tuesdays) on a coat hanger (or hang on the ones available); please do not leave them in bags by the door. Due to storage capacity, donations will be accepted until Wed 2 March this term.

Please also note we are unable to accept old PE polo shirts/shorts, due to the new uniform designs being implemented. If you have old uniforms which aren’t suitable for sale, the RPFA is currently completing a trial run with Worn Up, to assess bot the cost and convenience of this uniform recycling service to the entire Redlands community.

Your donations help us do our part in supporting sustainability. In addition, funds raised are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Weekly Reflections

Week 4 has provided us with some wonderful opportunities to engage with the students about our values. I have spoken with both Year 7 and 8 this week about the values which guide our actions and language. Specifically, we have considered respect and responsibility, and how we can embody these values, and live them authentically, inside and outside of school.

Our Stage 4 students were able to identify the following opportunities for inhabiting the values of respect and responsibility:

  • listening to each other, accepting an array of viewpoints and perspectives, celebrating difference in our community
  • respecting each other’s physical space and body, and maintaining a respectful distance
  • considering others around us and how we look after our physical spaces by picking up our rubbish, or someone else’s and valuing the wealth of resources we have at Redlands
  • using language that is inclusive and respectful of all people
  • thinking before we speak, use profanity or mock each other (in person or online)
  • demonstrating courteous behaviour on the bus and in the community, for example, by standing up for others on the bus, and not bumping into people on the footpath because we are looking down at our phone
  • thanking our teachers, sport coaches, canteen assistants, anyone whose job it is to look after us
  • taking responsibility when we make a mistake – owning our actions

Reflecting on the Value of Honesty in Chapel

Our focus on the Redlands values has been represented in this week’s online Chapel service. Our new Subject Coordinator for Christian Studies Ms Susan Tymoszuk prepared a beautifully reflective online Chapel service for Secondary School students this week on the value of honesty. Supporting her were Emma Canton Yr12 and Ava Atkinson Year 7.

COVID-19 – Moving Forward

A communication regarding the School’s response to recent State Government announcements about Covid-19 restrictions will be provided by the Principal tomorrow.

I can confirm that next week, we will continue with our slightly modified timetable, which increases the students’ recess and lunch times. Given that wet weather is expected yet again next week, we will be resetting the wet weather locations for each Year Group, and relying on the support of our Sport Coaches to offer students opportunities throughout the day to expend energy. Students will be notified via an iLearn Global Announcement on Friday and throughout next week, so they are clear about the opportunities on offer when it is raining, and where to go at recess and lunch.

Shrek The Musical

Rehearsals for Shrek are now well underway. Students completed the first run of Act One in Week 3 and we are extremely pleased with the dedication and focus the students have brought to each rehearsal. Production and makeup workshops commenced last week; the collaboration, excitement and passion bought to every rehearsal by every student from the stage to backstage bodes well for a superb production ready for Opening Night on Thursday 24 March.

Year 12

Yr 12 have been strongly focused on completing assessments in the past couple of weeks. They have been working well together and catching up with teachers when they require support.

Tomorrow, I will meet with Year 12 during Tutor Time to provide some key updates which will include Privileges, Camp and the Holiday Workshops.

School Events

There are a number of online and in-person events over the next few weeks.

An activity was launched to raise various issues impacting students to be discussed, such as wet weather arrangements. Students were also tasked with consulting with their tutor groups about what issues they would like the SRC to address in future meetings.

Next week the SRC students will attend a secondary school youth conference.

Sport Celebrations

It was great to see our Summer Representative teams back in action last Saturday in Basketball, Tennis and Touch Football.

While there are too many teams to mention individually, we value and appreciate all the students who are regularly attending training and fixtures in support of their teammates and the school.

Well done in particular to the Girls Basketball 1st V who beat Chevalier 1st V 63-25, and to the Jnr A team who beat their Chevalier opponents 74-6. It was great to see our new Year 7 teams representing Redlands in Basketball, winning two out of three games.

Across the Touch Football fixtures, the Boys had a successful day, winning three out of four games against various schools.

I hope all students involved in Summer Representative Sport enjoy the opportunity to get involved for the final few weeks as the season re-starts.

Japanese Language Buddy Program 2022

In 2022, we welcome some new initiatives offered by our Japanese teachers and senior students to support students’ learning in Japanese this year.

Firstly, Year 11 and 12 IB students are running a Japanese tutoring service as a Junior Sensei every Monday Lunchtime in L14, at Japan Club. These are new initiatives run by our senior students.

Also, Japanese Study Centre is run by Abe sensei every Tuesday and Wednesday morning; 7.30-8.15am in Learning Hub Level 2.

Year 11 & 12 IB students’ comments:

“We are Year 11 and 12 IB students offering Japanese help and tutoring during Monday lunchtimes in L14 every week. We are inviting students in Years 7-10 if they are interested in participating in a range of fun activities such as origami, watching movies, support with home learning, assessments and more. We can provide a personalised program, supporting and extending your Japanese language skills. We are able to share our useful Language learning strategies as language learners. Please come along!”.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Japanese language and culture, please see Abe Sensei nabe@redlands.nsw.edu.au or Okawa Sensei yokawa@redlands.nsw.edu.au or Jiang Sensei wjiang@redlands.nsw.edu.au for more information! Or, simply turn up at Study Centre or Japan Club next week!

Redlands Mask Recycling

Using money raised through the purchase of masks at $3 each in the Secondary School, a dedicated bin for the recycling of face-masks has been purchased – initiated by our Environment Captains Iris and Jacob. Students and staff who are discarding their mask at the end of the day are encouraged to use the mark recycling bin, which has its permanent home in the Secondary School Office. A mask-recycling drop-off point at the Gerard Street Gate will also be available each afternoon. Our Redlands Mask Recycling bin is one of the first of its kind in Australia, so having one on the Senior Campus is a great initiative, and we are excited to see the continuation of sustainable thinking and action despite the many challenges posed by the pandemic.

Waste Free Wednesdays

In Term 4 last year the very first Waste Free Wednesday was held on the Senior Campus, and we are pleased to announce that Waste Free Wednesdays will be continued in 2022. From Week 4 onwards, all staff and students are encouraged to consciously minimise their waste on Wednesdays. Hopefully, as a community, we can identify the significant amount of waste we create in just one day, and gain a deeper understanding of what methods and swaps we can make to reduce this amount. Our Yr 12 Captains are seeking parent support and encourage parents and carers to also be mindful on this day.

Year 7

Yr 7 are travelling well as we make our way through Week 4. On Monday at our Year Assembly, I spoke with students about the Redlands values and how they help us to be the best version of ourselves. Collectively, we are encouraging Yr 7 to be kind and respectful in their interactions with teachers and with each other. I talked about the need to put effort and energy into friendships and strategies to repair friendships when they may be on shaky ground.  In addition, I spoke with students about bus etiquette and how students present themselves to the broader community. With support our Yr 7 students are working hard on their self management, which is really pleasing to see.

Fixed and Growth Mindsets

Some in our community will be aware of the research of Dr. Carol Dweck, one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of human motivation and a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Dr Dweck’s research over many years centres around two main mindsets in our lives; fixed and growth mindsets. Her theory reasons that personal qualities such as intelligence, talent and skills can be grown or developed and not innate.

In the context of a school, this type of approach and language is how we nurture an environment where children seek challenges in their learning and understand that making mistakes along the journey is simply part of the process. Reflecting on my own experiences in school, this was something I did not discover until midway through my secondary schooling in an environment that did not foster risk-taking in learning and perhaps was more marks driven.

Much of Dweck’s study highlights the importance of praising effort, strategies and progress and not just outcomes and intelligence to encourage students to develop a growth mindset and this short video may help to understand the research behind this. Appropriate teacher feedback is crucial to fostering this mindset as well as specific language, in particular the power of the word ‘YET’. This focuses on promoting the norm for students to say, “I can’t…yet” or “I don’t’ know how to….yet” as part of their growth mindset way of thinking instead of simply, “I can’t do something or, “I don’t know how to do this”. I always finish a student’s sentence with the word yet if they ever tell me that they cannot do something or that they are not good at something and the subtle shift of mindset when you add ‘yet’ can be tangible.

As parents, it is also possible to support this by asking your children open-ended questions such as, “What did you learn today? What mistake did you make that taught you something? What did you try hard at today?”

These discussions can prompt reflection in effort, strategies, setbacks and learning as students increasingly understand the fact that we do some of our best learning when we make mistakes or when learning is a struggle.

Connected to this, one of our School Counsellors, Mr Digiacomo, has shared thoughts and tips below on how giving praise at home can further encourage a child’s growth mindset.

The mindset of a child has an impact on how they perceive and respond to their surroundings. A growth mindset can help a child to recognise that obstacles and failure can be learning opportunities. Struggling with a problem or overcoming a setback is beneficial to the brain’s neurological development. In contrast, a fixed mindset can result in a child striving to appear intelligent, and avoiding challenges and risks that may lead to failure.

Adopting a growth mindset

Learn to recognise when your child is experiencing a fixed mindset response and help them name their feelings. When they are more relaxed, talk about what methods they’ve used, how effective they were, and what new strategies they could use.

Giving feedback and praise

When children struggle to learn something or have been constantly told how smart they are, they can see their struggle as a sign that they lack talent and will never be good at it. Instead, praising the effort and hard work that goes into learning and success is an opportunity for growth. Providing feedback on the process is key. Praise hard work, perseverance, methods, taking on new tasks, goal setting, and coming up with new ideas and strategies.

  1. Acknowledge the strategy, e.g. “You figured out a really good way to do it.”
  2. Be specific in your praise, e.g. “You seem to really understand how to add two numbers.”
  3. Acknowledge effort, e.g. “I can definitely see you’ve been practising.”
The power of yet

“I can’t do this … YET”

“I don’t know this … YET”

Of course, we must use the above while keeping realistic expectations in mind and allowing children to fail. It is inevitable that a child experiences failure and they need to know this is okay.  When a growth mindset is encouraged in a balanced way, it can instil confidence in your child and help them to develop their intrinsic motivation to attempt new things.

Student Recognition – Kids Giving Back

Our Principal, Mr Webber, and I were proud to receive an email from Gabrielle Morrisey Hansen, CEO of the organisation Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of our Junior School students and their families spent time volunteering in Term 4, 2021 and over the last school holidays to help others through this organisation.

Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create the next generation of generosity through meaningful, hands-on experiences for young people to give back to others. Through charity partners, they arrange opportunities for children aged 6-18 years old and their families to provide assistance and support for people experiencing food scarcity or hardship.

The contribution of our students resulted in over 5000 meals, care packs and new backpacks of school supplies for those in need being prepared and distributed. 11 charities were assisted as a result of their work which supports the homeless and vulnerable in the community.

I will duly acknowledge these students in assembly next week but I wanted to also do so through this wider community communication as well. Thank you to the following students who participated in one or more of the programs during the school holidays:

Amelie Cadman, Imogen Scattini (Yr 4); Oliver Elworthy, Amelia Russo (Yr 5); Freya Carroll, Jenna Condous, Zara Siva (Yr 6); Daniel Benoliel, Jeffrey Benoliel, Daniel Bond, Sam Elworthy, William Thomson (now Yr 7)

To hear of our Redlands students embracing the concept of contributing back into the community is heart-warming and a wonderful example of our students living our School Values whilst making a difference to the lives of others.

Environment Captains in Action

Our new Junior School Environment Captains, Lauren Rolfe and Otis Gait, have already been involved in planning meetings and will be promoting two key whole of school initiatives in the Junior and Prep sections in the coming week, which I share below for parent knowledge too.

Clean Up Australia Day

On Sunday 6 March, students and families from Redlands will again be involved in Clean up Australia Day. Community members are encouraged to be involved in this event at Balmoral from 12pm-2pm, meeting at the rotunda at 11.50am. We will provide equipment so there is no need to bring anything for the clean-up. Yr 6 student volunteers will be there to help organise this along with Redlands staff and families are encouraged to come along and get involved. Do feel free to bring lunch or some snacks along as well and for those students who cannot make it, the Junior School will also be participating in Clean Up Australia Day at school the following week.

There will also be House points up for grabs for all participants that will go towards the House Shield at the end of the year. I look forward to joining others at this community-focused event.

Cutlery Library

The students are also looking to create a cutlery library. Currently, the canteen issues biodegradable cutlery in the canteen. The aim is to improve this further by creating a reusable cutlery library. Cutlery can be borrowed from the cutlery library and returned to the canteen to be washed.

So what are we asking you? Whether it’s forks or spoons, we would love any spare cutlery to be donated to our Cutlery Library. Please send this in via your child and they can be dropped off at reception or in Ms Tobiansky’s classroom (6 White C3.3). We will be allocating House Points and looking for the class who are able to donate the most.

SRC Meeting 1

Our Junior School Student Representative Council (SRC) consisting of a girl and a boy from each Junior School class had their first meeting this week. The group will meet every fortnight along with the School and Environment Captains and their conversations and discussions are guided by Mr Brakell. From these meetings, I then meet with the School and Environment Captains to get a sense of the key messages from the meeting and better understand the topics that matter to our students as we facilitate the important opportunity for student voice and agency. These roles are held for a semester and we then change the group for Semester Two with new representatives from each class.

Debating Teams off to a Winning Start

Congratulations to our Primary A and B teams who were victorious in their first interschool debates of 2022 against Brigidine College. For some students, this was their first debate against another school and they rose to the challenge. Both Mr Watkins and the debating coaches were suitably impressed and we wish them well in the upcoming season.

Yr 2 Leaders

Student voice and responsibility is such an important part of Prep life. The Yr 2 team along with the students have worked together to create the Prep School Year 2 Leadership Group. The main roles are outlined by students below. In the next few Note Day editions, students will describe each role in detail and explain how each child in Yr 2 will have an opportunity to be a leader. Yr 2 will share this new system with Prep at Grade Assemblies next week. I am very proud of the initiative demonstrated by our Yr 2 cohort.

We are so excited to present our new Year 2 Leaders program. Each week one Yr 2 class will take on the role of leaders. We will help other Prep school students in the playground as Big Buddies. Some of the other roles are sustainability leaders, enviro patrol, library monitors and ICT Buddies. We will wear a special vest so that Prep School students can recognise us. If they need any help they can come and see us.

Parent Helpers

A big thank you to all the parents who have volunteered precious time to help cover all our new readers. We look forward to seeing you all on your specific days. We still have a few spaces left on Friday 4/3, Friday 11/3, and Friday 18/3, please email me if you would like to help on these days.

Cross Country and K-1 Fun Run

We are very excited to announce that this year our Yr 2 students will be participating in the Junior Campus Cross Country Carnival at Tunks Park on 8 March. Parents will be receiving information shortly from the PE Department. Please note that the students will be returning to school by bus after their event and normal pickup times and arrangements will be in place.

Our PE staff will be running a Fun Run course on the same day for our Kindergarten and Yr 1 students. This isn’t considered a carnival, just a fun activity that encourages resilience and stamina but most of all, a bit of fun! Due to COVID safety guidelines, parents are not permitted on campus to watch but I can promise you all there will be lots of photos taken.

‘I don’t have any one to play with’

As parents, this is always a heart wrenching thing to hear from our children. I don’t think there is a parent who hasn’t heard this and thought ‘oh no, what’s going on’. If you are hearing this, please know there are strategies to help your child navigate new friendships and to develop their resilience to problem solve situations that sometimes can be catastrophised in the moment.

Time

Remember that our new students and out Kindy students are still getting used to being in a room with 18 other little people they didn’t know 4 weeks ago! They are figuring out how to follow class strategies, new curriculum and learning expectations plus having the extra responsibility of looking after their things. It’s a big new world for them and with some gentle guidance from their teachers they learn how to play together and how to establish and build a friendship. They will get things wrong; they will get upset at times, but it is important   we use these experiences as learning opportunities.

Where can I go to get help?

Our teachers are always the first point of call for any child. Daily lunch time Friendship Club is such a popular and unstructured time together with our Dean of Students and Counsellors where friendship skills are the focus while playing and having fun. In the classroom our students participate in Circle Time and wellbeing sessions where the You Can Do It program sets a positive learning frame for navigating friendships.

The library is another place at lunchtime where students can sit and read in the quietness of the library. The start of Term 2 lunchtime Clubs will also be another space where friendships can be nurtured.

If the worry continues

If your child continues to come home expressing friendship worries, please reach out to your class teacher to have a discussion. It may be something simple that can be put into place, or it may be that we need to put a specific action plan into place to target specific objectives.

Giving praise while encouraging a growth mindset

A message from Mr Digiacomo, School Counsellor

The mindset of a child has an impact on how they perceive and respond to their surroundings. A growth mindset can help a child to recognise that obstacles and failure can be learning opportunities. Struggling with a problem or overcoming a setback is beneficial to the brain’s neurological development. Here are some tips for implementing a growth mindset in your households:

Adopting a growth mindset:

Learn to recognise when your child is experiencing a fixed mindset response and help them name their feelings. When they’re more relaxed, talk about what methods they’ve used, how effective they were, and what new strategies they could use.

Giving feedback and praise:

Beatriz will work across all of the Redlands House classes, as well as working closely with Miss Rai to ensure our Extended Care and Vacation Care programs are educational, fun and enjoyable for the children. We know she will enjoy her time at Redlands House with our beautiful students and their families.

Independence

At Redlands House we encourage strongly encourage independence. We love seeing the children carry their own bags, pack away their belongings and look after their food containers. As children grow and develop, they become more able to do things for themselves, to express themselves and to explore their world independently. Independence contributes to the development of self-esteem, identity and wellbeing. Doing something for yourself produces a powerful sense of achievement and success. When children have opportunities to make choices, to attempt tasks for themselves, and to take on increasing responsibilities, their sense of themselves as competent members of society grows.

Extended Care

Extended Care (Late Room) is available from 2.30pm to 6.00pm for all Redlands House and Transition Gold Students. Extended Care is held at Redlands House each school day, afternoon tea is included. For Extended Care bookings please email Extendedcare@redlands.nsw.edu.au or call Miss Rai on 0428251564.

Secondary Sport

Maximising Wellbeing & Minimising Risk

The Sport Department is working closely with the Redlands Executive to observe all guidance from the Association of Independent Schools of NSW, as we seek to safely maximise sporting opportunities for our students in 2022, (concurrently minimising the potential for Covid transmission).

Our approach to planning for the safest possible resumption of Sports Activities includes:

Please click on this link to access the Redlands – Covid-19 Sport Protocols for this Saturday. This document will provide you with an overview of the current protocols that are in place at each of the Redlands home sporting venues. The Sports Administrators will communicate with families directly on the requirement in place at ‘away’ venues each week.

Mask-wearing

  • Mask-wearing is required when traveling between sports venues and on school grounds (this includes students walking or traveling by bus to or from school).
  • Secondary School students must always wear masks at indoor sports venues when not exercising, including in change room and bathroom facilities.

Change-Rooms and Uniform

  • In order to minimise large groups of students mixing in changing rooms, students have permission to wear their PE uniform to school on days they have Sport training.

 Representative Sport

  • Students whose Representative Sport training session is not scheduled on Thursday afternoon will be dismissed from school at 2.30pm.
  • Sport Specific information is also available to families on the Secondary School Sports Page on Redlands Pulse.

Swimming

We are asking all Redlands students who are keen to represent Redlands at the ISA Swimming Championships to complete the ISA Swimming Registration (please note students only will have access to the Google Survey, via their Redlands School email address). The ISA Swimming Championships on Wednesday 9th March 2022 (Term 1, Week 6).

Please note this date is a direct clash with Year 7 camp, so unfortunately students in Year 7 are unable to compete in this year’s ISA Swimming Championships.

Registrations are currently open and will close at 6:00pm Tuesday 1st March (Term 1, Week 5).

If you have any questions, please contact Mr Ellis in the Sports Department cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

More information regarding the ISA Carnival will be available on Redlands Pulse Swimming in the coming weeks.

Winter Sport Registrations

The Winter Sport Registrations are now open, students will be emailed this link via their Year Group iLearn page. Registrations close on Thursday 3 March at 4:00pm. Students and parents should read the preliminary information on.Redlands Pulse – Winter Sport to gain and understanding of the sporting commitments required for the winter season.

Please note: those students (including current Yr 12) who completed a Non-Rep Summer Sport must complete a Winter Representative Sport.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse and the Redlands App from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should to be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game Time and Arrival Times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Touch Football

There was some great Touch football played out at Oakhill College & St Pauls Grammar School. Some tough results across the weekend for the Girls Touch Football, with a number of scores not going our way. Despite the results the girls had an enjoyable time both down at Oxley College and at Macquarie. The boys teams continue to grow and develop with each game, with the Senior Boys A and Junior Boys A having strong wins. Our Junior B and Junior C boys teams played each other, and it was great to get them games despite the wet weather.

A reminder for all those in Touch Football, only Redlands branded uniform is to be worn for both trainings and games on Saturdays, students who do not wear the appropriate uniform will result in school disciplinary action.

Game time and training arrivals: a reminder that students should arrive to their trainings and games at appropriate times. Morning training at Cammeray Oval starts at 6.45am, students therefore need to arrive prior to 6.45am. Students are to arrive 30 minutes prior to their start times on Saturdays, please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Basketball

It was great to see all Basketball teams getting a game on Saturday after a number of teams missed out the first week and there were certainly some exciting games across the board. The Girls Basketball program continues to go from strength to strength with six of the eight girls teams getting a win. The boys won five of their games on Saturday with a great atmosphere given spectators are now allowed at NBISC. A special mention to the 15A Boys basketball team who were forced into overtime again St Pius 15As. A very exciting finish to the game in which a Redlands 3-pointer just seconds before the buzzer put Redlands ahead for the win.

A reminder to all students that Redlands sports uniform needs to be worn to all trainings and matches. Students are not allowed to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing. In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Please ensure you are arriving to your venue at least 30 minutes prior to the start time for your game on Saturday. The Redlands Rhino is updated each Tuesday afternoon ahead of the upcoming Saturday matches.

The most up to date COVID protocols for each of the venues can be found by clicking here. A reminder to familiarise yourself with these protocols ahead of you Saturday fixtures.

Sailing

The light wind weather conditions last weekend gave the sailors an opportunity to refine their boat handling skills. Our Elliott sailors took out kites for the first time, while our Pacer sailor worked on refining their upwind and downwind boat speed. This weekend two teams of Redlands sailors will be traveling to Canberra to compete in the ACT Teams Racing Championships. The event is one of the largest schools’ teams racing events in Australia and we wish those teams the best of luck.

Rowing

Last weekend saw the rowing program acknowledge the contribution of our past Rowing captains Emily Barrelle and Alex Holtheuer with the naming of two new single sculls. This is a great tradition that see’s us name our new single sculls after past rowing captains:

Tennis

After another great round of Tennis last weekend saw Redlands teams settling in comfortably with their second win and others winning their first of the season. As the dark clouds loomed over the courts on Saturday, the rain fortunately held off for all games to go ahead. This week brings Round 3 of competition and another chance to show off the amazing talent here at Redlands.

A reminder for Round 3 (26 February) this weekend:

  • If you are unable to attend Saturday competition, please email Luke Jeffery by no later than 12pm on Friday.
  • Please check the draw and playing pairs list to see when/where/who you are playing.

  • For any questions, please email Luke Jeffery.

Please join me in wishing the Tennis students all the best for their upcoming matches this weekend!

Wet Weather

General

In the event that training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport). In addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning and afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon Sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 8-12)
In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Year 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.

Thursday afternoon Sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 7)
In the event that year 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.10pm and participate in cohort-based activities.

Thursday afternoon – early departure (Year 8-12)
As we attempt to limit student mixing indoors, there will be no classroom supervision for students who do not have any scheduled sport training on a Thursday afternoon. Therefore, students who do not have training on Thursday afternoon will have permission to leave early.

Fitness Centre

With Summer Sport up and running and our Winter Sport athletes beginning their prep for the 2022 ISA Season the Fitness Centre is the perfect place to build strength, work on speed and improve endurance. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday–Friday and start promptly at 6:30am. We have had brilliant numbers across the sessions with over 35 students attending our Wednesday morning session this week.

In addition, starting from next week, the Fitness Centre will also be open to all students on Wednesday afternoon. This afternoon session will be targeted towards specific areas of development such as speed, power and flexibility. For all our Winter Rep. Athletes, this Wednesday afternoon session is a fantastic way to prepare for the upcoming season. As well as the Wednesday Open Session, Monday will be a specific session for our 1st Boys Basketball. This session can also be accessed by specific athletes who have had prior permission from the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Trainer of the Week

Joseph Hooper is our Redlands Trainer of the Week. Joe has not only been training the house down in preparation for the Redlands Rugby season, but he is also completing his Duke of Ed through the Fitness Centre. He has set some brilliant individual goals for his certificate, and we cannot wait to see what he can achieve within this space.

Cross Country Preparation

As you would be aware all students in their PE lesson have been undertaking the 20m multistage fitness test, commonly referred to as the Beep Test’. All classes have completed this and a grade average has been calculated for everyone. Those above the grade average will run in the championship run, those below the fun run. Both runs take place over the same course, both have ribbons for place getters.  To view your child’s event please select the following link;

2022 Class Listing- what event am I in ?

You will see that I have also listed their entrant number, this needs to be written on their arm on race day so we can separate age groups in the computer as we have different age groups running against each other in the same grade. It is important that your child knows their entrant number as that is how results are generated when they cross the finish line.

Our new venue is Tunks Park Cammeray with the carnival taking place Tuesday 8 March. A fly over of the course can be viewed here. If you can manage to get down to Tunks park for a walk or run before the event that always settles nerves on race day. Parents and or carers are welcome to join us on this day but must remain off the course. You will receive a detailed information package about the event on Friday.

2022 Term 1 Sport Calendar

For an outline and timeline of all our sporting events in Term 1 our Junior School Sport calendar can be viewed by selecting here.

2022 Summer Sport Team Lists

Please check these as there have been a few changes to teams over the last few days. Students have been told it is their responsibility to check the team lists, see if there any team changes that affect them and then cross check new times in the draw. That way it avoids students being moved teams turning up at the incorrect time and or venue.

Winter Sport Selection

Thank you to those families who completed their Winter Sport Preference last Friday. All the students have been sorted into their nominated sports and can be viewed below. If you are happy with your selection there is nothing else to do. If you wish to change sports please email Junior Sport with the change (name and class of your child and the sport they want to come out from and the new sport they wish to enter into). Please note there are no changes to any sports, as advertised the cut-off date for changes was Friday 18 February.

Ballet and Dance

Dante at QBA and Coaching with Wim Broeckx

Dante Minassian, Year 8, has been studying with the Queensland Ballet Academy this week as a student in the Guest Academy Program. This is a wonderful opportunity for him to work with QB’s world class faculty and a chance for him to see the pre-professionals and the Company in action.

Dante is also preparing for the Australian Classical Challenge which will be taking place in Newcastle at the weekend, so Ms Revie arranged for him to be coached by Mr Wim Broeckx whilst in Brisbane.

Mr. Wim Broeckx
Mr Wim Broeckx

Mr Broeckx had a long and successful career in three international companies most notably the Dutch National Ballet where he rose to Principal Dancer and later Assistant Artistic Director. Following his career dancing on the international stage, he became Director of the Dance Department of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, Netherlands. He was also the Artistic President of the Prix de Lausanne for many years.

Lucky for Australia (and Dante) Mr Broeckx now lives in Queensland where he has worked with Queensland Ballet in several positions, such as Associate teacher and Head of the Pre-Professional Program, he also works freelance coaching talented students in preparation for exams, competitions, and auditions.

Perhaps we will see him at Redlands at some point in the future!

Pointe Assessments

There has been much excitement amongst Intermediate Foundation students this week with the arrival of Ballet Physiotherapist Nicole Baer who has been at the Academy this week for Pre-Pointe Assessments. Over the next few weeks dancers are being assessed on individual facility, strength and stability to ensure a safe transition to Pointe.

All Rights Reserved to Matthew Jensen

Nicole has a Bachelor of Science (Anatomy and Physiology), Bachelors Degree of Applied Science (Physiotherapy), Masters Degree in Health Science (Sports Physiotherapy), she is a Member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and the International Association of Dance Medicine (IADMS).

Nicole Baer
Nicole Baer

Since 2014, Nicole has worked with The Australian Ballet during their Sydney seasons as well as Bangarra Dance Company, several international touring dance companies and internationally renowned touring ballet dancers. Nicole is well known for her holistic approach and empathic treatment of each person. She takes the time to educate the dancer about the injury and management process and works closely with other health professionals to ensure that each dancer’s management plan is tailored to their needs. This method is proven to be effective in reducing the incidence of injuries.

Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy are thrilled to have a connection with Nicole and all her knowledge and experience.

Music

I’ve been reflecting on my own musical journey and all the times (perhaps unnoticed at the time) that my parents and even grandparents were actually in the background of those memories – cheering, helping and supporting myself and my friends in so many musical adventures.

As a parent myself, I also have cherished memories of times when I have been able to draw alongside my own children’s music and to ‘give what was in my hand’  (though small at times) – and to be able to feel like I was adding value in some way to their music as well.

This is our heart for the Friends of Music in 2022.  We want to create opportunities for parents to connect and draw alongside their children’s music journeys. Being a Friend of Music is an invitation and not an obligation – a chance to connect in, more than a list of jobs to do.

You may have half an hour per month, or you may love online shopping for costumes on the couch at night. You may love the quiet rhythms of data entry, sorting instruments or just an excuse for coffee with friends while pulling some creative exploit together to add some sparkle to a Music Festival. Whatever your skillset, and whatever you have in your hand – it is more than enough and we welcome you to use it to support our P-12 Music happenings.

Carys Wardman-Browne carys.stuart@bigpond.com is at the helm of our ‘Friends’ for 2022, and she would be happy to hear from you if you are keen to join us! We encourage you to add your name to our ‘Friends of Music –  Expression of Interest’ form (below), and we’ll see where the adventure takes us!

TONIGHT!  Friends of Music Gathering! (7pm)

Parents and Community Members are invited to join us this evening (Thursday) for our ‘Friends of Music’ launch meeting for 2022 via Zoom at 7pm. We’ll be aiming to keep it short and sweet.  The Friends of Music have been an incredible support to the Music department over the years, but our mantra for 2022 is give what’s in your hand’.  There are no round pegs and square holes to fill – just you, and whatever big or small thing you would like to add in support of our young musicians.

This is such a great way to get to know others in our community and to be close to the action as your child’s musical journey unfolds. A wonderful year is ahead!

All P-12 Ensembles in full swing!

It is a season for singing and playing in groups once more. The image above features Junior Choir kicking off last Friday under the direction of our wonderful new choral specialist Mrs Nicole Roberts. The turnout was fantastic and it is so heartening that the disruption of the past two years hasn’t dampened the joy that our Redlanders find in making music together.

Reminder re: Year 2 Strings and Year 4/5 MIP

We are fortunate at Redlands to have weekly programmed ensemble experiences as part of our P-5 curriculum. An important part of learning an instrument is making sure we are looking after it and playing it regularly at home. Students are reminded to take their Year 2 Strings or MIP instrument home each week to consolidate their learning. Instruments should not be left at school all week.

Music Ensembles Supervision

For ensembles that rehearse before school, please be reminded that there is no supervision for students until 10 minutes any scheduled ensemble. Please ensure that students are not left without appropriate care.

What’s in a name?

A violin by any other name… could belong to anyone!

Junior and Senior students alike are reminded to URGENTLY label your instruments – hired or otherwise – so if found by a teacher around the school or left on a bus (don’t ask…) it has a hope of being quickly returned to you.  Please add a key tag with a surname and phone number as a bare minimum as soon as possible.

Have a great week!

Reach out to the Music Office of your respective Campus if we can assist you with any Music-related matter.
