Issue 37 2022 Term 4 Week 8 - 01 Dec 2022

From the Principal

20 Year Sports Partnership with Macquarie University

I’m delighted to advise that Redlands will call Macquarie University Sports grounds home for at least the next 20 years, through a long term lease partnership between the School and Macquarie, and a $7.5 million upgrade to University Oval which was announced this week. The upgrade is being made possible through a partnership between the NSW Government and AFL NSW/ACT, with the School’s contribution of the lease guarantee. It will include new lighting and seating, enhanced pavilions, and the capacity to film AFLW games to broadcast quality.

As parents may know, University Oval and the three other sports fields at Macquarie are our home grounds for our Saturday sports competitions and Tuesday and Thursday afternoon training sessions in AFL, Football, Touch Football and Rugby.

It was a privilege to be on hand for the formal announcement, where I joined the NSW Minister for Sport Alister Henskens, local member and Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello, Professor Bruce Dowton, the Vice Chancellor of Macquarie University and representatives from AFL NSW/ACT.

At the event, Minister Henskens spoke passionately about providing the best possible facilities for our students and the broader community. Specifically he said:

“This is all about allowing our community as well as our elite sports men and women to be able to play in the best possible facilities…. When I look at our young Redlands men and women down there, this is all about them, it’s all about building things for the future [and] long-term investment, so congratulations everyone – it’s a beautiful day.”

We are also currently finalising plans with Macquarie University and Sydney FC for the upgrade of Northern Oval. Therefore our 20 year partnership with Macquarie University will see many of our students, both current and future, benefitting from these exceptional new facilities at Macquarie.

Redlands Learning Hub Level Naming – Celebrating our Alumni

This evening at a Foundation function, Redlands Chair, Glenda McLoughlin will be officially naming each of the levels in the Redlands Learning Hub to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of the following significant alumni who graduated from Redlands between 1903 and 1920.

These remarkable Redlanders have been showcased at the western entry points on each level of the Redlands Learning Hub, with an artwork and plaque highlighting their individual achievements. You can read more about their significant contributions in their respective fields of endeavour by clicking the links above.

Uniform Redevelopment Update

Throughout 2022, we have made great progress on the redevelopment of the school uniform. It is the first time the uniform has been reviewed in over 25 years and our Uniform Committee (comprising student, parent, staff and Board representatives from across the School) has been working with leading Australian designer Jonathan Ward on developing a uniform that reflects the contemporary culture of the School and will be worn with pride by students.

Value, cost, sustainability and easy-care properties have been a central focus of the Uniform Committee. These have been addressed through the development of a trans-seasonal uniform; the use of newly developed fabrics that are lightweight, durable and comfortable; and a uniform implementation through a long transition period. The new uniform will be introduced in Term 1 2024 and during the following two year transition period, students will have the option of either wearing the new or old uniform. The new uniform will incorporate gender neutral options and honour the legacy of Redlands uniforms across our rich history. You can read more about the uniform redevelopment in the Community Engagement section of Note Day and we look forward to sharing the new uniform design with you in mid-2023.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Yr 12 student Tate Boswarva, who has had her Textiles and Design major work selected for exhibition in Shape, the showcase of the very best major works in NSW. The exhibition will be at the Powerhouse from 3 March to 21 May 2023.

Staff Achievement

Congratulations to Secondary School HISE teacher, Rachael Riley who was awarded a prestigious Premier’s Teachers Scholarship at a function at the State Library last night.  Ms Riley will use the scholarship funds to explore the possibility of integrating Aboriginal informed pedagogies into the NSW History Curriculum, specifically, the Two-Way Learning approach that Redlands has with the Yolngu people of north east Arnhem Land.

End of Year Events

The Junior and Senior Campus Carols events are always a highlight in this week, along with the delightful and entertaining Redlands House Concert. It is so impressive to see the students, right across the School, loving their experience of music and performing in public. My sincere thanks to our dedicated and highly talented music staff for their commitment and inspiration.

As I look ahead to the final week of events, including end of year assemblies, Yr 6 graduation assembly, Preparatory School Presentation Day, Junior School Speech Day and Secondary School Speech Night, it is with deep gratitude for the opportunity to share with the school community in celebrating what makes Redlands such an amazing school.

I look forward to sharing my reflections with you at these events and to have the opportunity to give thanks to our incredible students, highly professional staff, very supportive and engaged parent body, connected alumni, dedicated Board Directors and to all friends and supporters of Redlands.

Redlands is a vibrant, dynamic and forward-thinking school community and it has been an honour to lead the School during the last three years. May you all have a blessed and peaceful Christmas with family and friends and here’s to many memorable years ahead for the School.

Mr Stephen Webber

Community Update

Community

The redevelopment of Redlands Academic Uniform commenced this year with the formation of our Uniform Committee, comprising students, parents, staff and Board representatives from across our whole School community.  This breadth of expertise and experience, along with extensive and ongoing collaboration, will help shape a uniform that will meet the needs of future generations of Redlands students.

This exciting project sees the first holistic review of our uniform in over 25 years and will culminate in a new era of school attire that is comfortable, contemporary and provides students with personal choice.

Engaging a uniform designer who understood the needs of students from Redlands House through to the Secondary School, and who could realise and develop designs in a stylish, ethical and sustainable way, was paramount. Leading Australian designer, Jonathan Ward, has led our objectives to produce a uniform that:

  • reflects the contemporary culture and essence of the School
  • positions Redlands as a modern top tier independent school
  • is worn with pride by students

The most defining aspect of the new uniform is individual student choice. There will no longer be a Summer and Winter uniform. The new uniform will be trans-seasonal and will be designed to be worn all-year round. It will feature a range of core items as well as an extensive range of optional garments to complement each students’ individual preferences, style and comfort. The new uniform will incorporate gender neutral options and honour the legacy of Redlands uniforms across our rich history.

Value and cost are a central focus of the Uniform Committee. These have been addressed through the development of a trans-seasonal uniform, the use of newly developed fabrics that are lightweight, durable and comfortable and implementation through a long transition period. The new uniform will be transitioned in to the School over two years. It begins at the start of Term 1, 2024 and concludes at the end of Term 4, 2025. In the lead-up to the full transition, students may wear either the current uniform or the new uniform but not a mix of both on any given day. We will offer our much loved Second Hand Uniform service to families commencing with us through the next few years in order to support their transition to Redlands’ new uniform.

The current uniform will be transitioned out by the end of Term 4, 2025. We are working with our uniform manufacturer to provide appropriate recycling solutions, including Worn Up, for the current uniform once it ceases to be available for use at the end of 2025. We look forward to sharing the new uniform design with you in mid-2023.

With the end of another School year approaching the Redlands Parents and Friends Association continue to actively bring our various groups together. A number of social events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here along with our 2023 events that commence early in Term 1 with Twilight in the Garden on Friday 17 February.

My thanks to all of the important groups of committed and generous volunteer members for their assistance and support through 2022. In particular JP Forrest, President of the RPFA, Grahame Petersen, Chair of the Foundation Advisory Committee and Jennifer Farrell, outgoing President of the Redlanders Alumni Association, thank you for your leadership and guidance through an important year of reconnection for our community.

I have been overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of our community through 2022 and look forward to meeting more of our parents and carers through 2023.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful break with your family over the festive season and Summer holidays.

Keep well and stay safe.

Legacy Gift Class of 2023

I was delighted to attend the Yr 12 Assembly to share with our students the history and importance of this initiative for Redlands.

I was impressed to hear from student leaders for the word LEGACY means for them and it was very clear that the they have a full understanding that this is something which memorable and creates long lasting impact for the School.

This initiative, launched in 2016 by Yr 12 students, brought lots of important and memorable “assets” for Redlands while building our Culture of Giving:

  • Alexandra Scott Award for Sportsmanship and Teamwork
  • Contributions to means-tested scholarships
  • Ping Pong table which will be placed at the top terraces
  • Environmental initiative and raising awareness of sustainability.

Students will have an opportunity to volunteer next year in various areas and enhance their skills in leadership, teamwork, communication and time management.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I would like to thank sincerely to all members of our community for your incredible support and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and relaxing and enjoyable break.

Head of Secondary School

As the final week of the 2022 school year fast approaches, it has been affirming to reflect on the many accomplishments and joys of this year. I know the students are engaged in reflection activities in their lessons and tutor time, as well as having conversations about their plans for the festive holiday season.

Currently our 1sts Basketball teams are playing in the National Competition on the Gold Coast. Both the girls’ and boys’ team have experienced some success and are having a wonderful time being away with their coaches and respective teams. Ms Cox, our Head of Sport, reports they have been exceptional ambassadors for the School, and a great support to each other.

Our rowers have also been keeping up their training ahead of the 2023 season and I was delighted to see their exceptional plank skills this week after time on the ergs. Their coach was tough on them and added 10 seconds every time someone dropped to the floor. There were groans and complaints as well as laughter and encouragement. Bring on rowing camp!

Yr 8 student Amber Kusano has seen great success in the Athletics NSW Competition. She has achieved personal bests for all races and last weekend she ran the 800m race and achieved another PB – 2:18.99. She qualified for the Under 16 Nationals! Well done Amber!

Science Symposium

The series of year group challenges concluded this week with the Yr 9 Science Symposium. Students had to design a new vision for High Country Campus with sustainability as the key priority. Yr 9 dreamt big and their ideas were stellar. I was blown away by their innovative designs, creative use of technology and strong presentation skills. Our CFO, Mr Brad Weatherstone, was on the judging panel and was equally impressed and inspired with the array of sustainable designs.

Carols on the Fahl Garden

This Friday afternoon sees the Secondary School gather as a community on the Fahl Garden prior to the final week before we depart for Christmas. The SRC representatives will be making students welcome, carols will be sung and Santa will make an appearance. The afternoon has been carefully planned by our Chaplain Ms Kirsten Phillips to bring the community together for a joyous and shared occasion. Students are strongly encouraged to wear a hat (it can be festive, but the aim is sun protection) and bring their drink bottle.

The Final Week of School for 2022

Students attend regular timetabled classes on Monday. On Tuesday students will attend some regular timetabled classes and also attend End of Term Assemblies. These will pose an opportunity to reflect on the term, celebrate each other’s gifts and talents and farewell Mr Webber. All students will be expected to completely clear their locker on Tuesday, so please expect a schoolbag that is heavier than usual when they return home on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday is a pupil-free day as students are required to be at The Big Top at Luna Park for Speech Night at 4.00pm.

Merry Christmas

As this is the final Note Day for the year, I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry and joyful Christmas and holiday break. It’s been an awesome year with many successes and memorable experiences. The students’ optimism and care for each other and their community is a special characteristic and what gives Redlands its distinctive flavour. Once again, I appreciate working with a talented and professional staff body and within a broader community who share a common purpose to provide exceptional and holistic learning opportunities for our amazing students. A Christmas Message from the Chaplains

Surprises come in many forms and guises. From amazing to tragic to hilarious and rarely boring. The first Christmas contained many surprises, starting with the news from an angel Gabriel announcing the birth of Christ to an unsuspecting Mary. Perhaps the greatest surprise at Christmas is the declaration that God loves us. Remember the first words to Mary: ‘Greetings to you who are highly loved’. They may have been the most surprising words of all. May we all consider and give thanks for the ways God surprises us and gives us hope.

Considering God has given his gift to enjoy and share with others. One way we have been able to share the Spirit of that first Christmas is to be involved in caring for those in need through supporting Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker and the Lismore Appeal. Many thanks to the generosity of the Redlands community. Donations will be gratefully received until Tuesday 6th December.

We have enjoyed precious opportunities to gather together and celebrate the love and joy of the Christmas story at the Junior and Secondary School Campus Carols events. Students were delighted  to sing, dance, listen and laugh together and even Santa made a surprise visit!

It was fantastic to meet with the ‘Parents who Pray’ group this past week and to give thanks for the contribution of Mr Stephen Webber and to uphold the school in prayer. All parents are welcome to attend these twice termly gatherings in 2023. We wish everyone a blessed and peaceful Christmas season and look forward to supporting the spiritual life of our community throughout the coming year.

Year 11

Happy Holidays!

As we approach the end of a big year, Ms El Martin and I would like to wish our Yr 11 students and families a safe, relaxing and joyful Summer holiday. Our Year 11 students have really stepped it up this term, in all aspects of school life, and have transitioned so well to their senior studies. I would like to pass on a big thank our Year 11 Tutors for all their hard work, looking after their Tutor Groups and caring for each and every individual student. We bid farewell, to three Year 11 Tutors this term including Ms Ellie Dalton who will be moving to the UK, Ms Lily Peschardt, who will be going on Maternity Leave, and Mr Jimmy Tod-Hill who will be undertaking his role as the Year 7 Year Adviser for 2023. These wonderful Tutors will be farewelled at the Year 11 Gratitude Morning Tea next Monday during Tutor Time. I would also like to pass on my sincere thank you to all the Year 11 Subject Teachers who have supported Year 11 over the last twelve months and to our Dean of HSC, Ms Lucy Benjamin, Dean of IB, Mr Darren Taylor, Career Advisers, Ms Clare Hurst and Ms Justine Fowler, and Dean of Students, Ms Marita Jansons for all their efforts and support for Year 11 throughout 2022.

I ask that the cohort has a restful break and puts time aside for family and friends over the Summer break, and ensure that this is balanced with academic studies, so that when Year 12 returns in the new year, they are feeling refreshed and ready to take on their final year.

Have a wonderful Summer break and thank you for all your support throughout 2022.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Hadley Wintle who was awarded a Pass with High Distinction in Practice of Music, Certificate of Performance in the subject of Saxophone as well as a Pass with Honours in Fourth grade in the subject of Musicianship. An amazing achievement!

Congratulations to Isabella Treloar for receiving the NSW School of Languages Excellent Effort and Commitment in Year 11 Latin Continuers Award and 3rd in Course for Latin Continuers Award. Both of these awards recognise Isabella’s recognition of high academic achievement in Latin Continuers. Well done!

Congratulations to Lucy Horton, who represented Redlands at the NSW Constitutional Convention held at the NSW Parliament House on Tuesday. Lucy was a stand out student on the day, and was one of 30 students who has been selected to represent the NSW Parliament at the National Constitutional Convention which will be held in Canberra in March 2023.

Movember

Well done to Simone Francesci who raised over $1000.00 for the Movember Fundraising Campaign. All the proceeds will go towards raising awareness about Mens Mental Health, Testicular and Prostate Cancer research, and men’s suicide prevention.

We Stand with Ukraine – Reflection by Bella Havryk

Seb Tang, Charlotte Scamps, Dan Close and I were privileged to attend the We Stand with Ukraine event at the Isabel Menton Theatre on Monday afternoon, which was Ukraine Dignity and Freedom Day.

Ukrainian bandura musician Larysa Kovalchuk performed several beautiful cultural pieces. Several speakers each provided invaluable insight and new perspectives on the war still raging in Ukraine.

Andrew Mencinsky, the Vice President of the Ukrainian Council of NSW spoke of the horrors continuing to be endured by those in Ukraine. The harrowing details he shared really emphasised the ongoing terrible reality of this situation.

Another of the panel speakers, Maria Mykytiuk shared her heartbreaking experiences as a Ukrainian refugee. The stories she shared were deeply moving, especially for me as someone with a Ukrainian heritage. Her unimaginable struggles and traumatic experiences really drove home that this war is still being fought now – people are still without homes, electricity, food and even family. Civilians continue to witness friends being killed, unsure of whether their families are alive or where they are.

Her words were a powerful reminder to keep the people of Ukraine in our hearts, minds and prayers.

We are fortunately physically distant and only see the war on the news, but these atrocities are the everyday harsh reality for millions.

Councillor James Spenceley’s story was an especially inspiring example of ways we can all get involved and support Ukraine. An Australian-born man with a Ukrainian wife, he founded Aus Ukraine Aid. He has been sourcing second-hand ambulances and raising funds for medical supplies which he drives in convoys across Ukraine, dropping off the much-needed supplies as he travels.

We cannot stop living our lives, but there is so much more we can do.

Yr 12 Life Skills: Car Mechanics Basics

A big thank you to Jake Hazell who lead demonstrations on the basics of car mechanics during Tutor Time over the last week. Jake who is studying Automotive Studies at TAFE, showed year 12, how to change a tire, check oil, coolant, tire pressure and gave many tips; particularly regarding car safety. Year 12, found Jake’s demonstration very interesting and useful and will now know how to confidently change a flat tire! A shout out also to Joe Griffith who lent Jake his car for the demonstrations and assisted Jake with his demonstration.

M’Lop Tapang Cambodia Iced Chocolate Fundraiser

Well done to Taylor Riddell, Cleophe Eliatamby, Maddie Bye, Fedora Hamori and Lucy Baird who lead the Cambodia Iced Chocolate Drive on Friday to raise funds for M’Lop Tapang School in Cambodia. Collectively, the group has raised almost $1000.00 which will go towards providing food at recess and lunch for the students who attend M’Lop Tapang.

End of Yr 10

It has been another incredible year and possibly the most eventful yet for this cohort. Students navigated Subject Selection for senior courses, fully engaged in the Pastoral Care Program on Healthy and Respectful Relationships, experienced Winter School, service initiatives and powered to the finish line with examination preparation. They had their first social gathering as a cohort with the Harbour Cruise, rose to the challenge on Yr 10 Camp and then stepped up into their senior courses. This cohort has truly come together to support one another through these exciting moments.

Recently, students participated in a Peer Support Leadership training day and applied for the position in Yr 11. It is one of many opportunities coming to this cohort as they become senior students. It was an overwhelming response where most of the cohort put their hand up for wanting to be a leader. This is a true testament to the passion, care, drive and motivation this year group has.  While not everyone who applied will be able to be a Peer Support Leader next year, all senior students are leaders to their peers, younger students, their teachers, the executive, the community and to themselves. There is a real strength these teenagers have as a Yr 11 student and we know they will rise to the occasion.

Speech Night

This week, communication regarding details of Speech Night was sent home to families. Students are expected to be in attendance to celebrate the achievements of themselves and their peers for Yr 10. Please note the following information:

  • Wednesday 7 December from 5-7pm
  • Students are to go directly to The Big Top, Luna Park, 1 Olympic Drive, Milsons Point

Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land

Following on from a wonderfully successful Year 9 Camp, in partnership with Culture College, we will be offering a Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 15-22 April 2023, open to current Year 9 and 10 students.

In this cultural immersion, students will revisit and build on the ideas they were introduced to last year during the Culture College incursion, or this year during Year 9 Camp. After a brief stay at the Gulkula site students will travel to one of the Yolngu Homeland areas. This offers the opportunity for a much more personal, extensive and detailed exploration of Yolngu culture has been possible so far. It would suit students who are ready and willing to consider more deeply the knowledge they gained previously and how to effect change for the future.

The cost of the tour is $4,925. A proposed itinerary and booking form are available on Pulse (see News section). Bookings and payments should be made directly to Culture College, so please check their Terms and Conditions on the Booking Form.

Places are limited will be reserved upon payment of the deposit to Culture College. For more information, please view this recording of an Information Session held recently.

STEAM

This week, Yr 9 students have been engaged in a 2 day STEAM project to design a sustainable classroom building for High Country Campus.

The students started the project with a presentation from ex-Redlander and Board Member of Passive House Australia, Chris Nunn. He discussed all aspects of sustainable design and how we can utilise different products to create more green and passive buildings. Each group had the opportunity to engage in a variety of workshops to develop their knowledge of architecture and design then they were given time to create their classroom building integrating sustainable design principles.

The presentations were outstanding and the winners for each house were as follows:

Cowper:

Annabelle Hwang, Maria Monsees, Caitlin Edwards, Samantha Wightwick

Dumolo:

Elenor Blankenstein, Sophie Yu, Amalie Winton, Sonia Polok

McDouall:

Hugo Baird, Joshua Farrant, Ferdinand Sorensen, Jasper Hanly-Atmore

Roseby:

Nicholas Tebutt, Lachlan Green, Katherine Lam, Lucile Thompson, Tali Feldman, Andreas Kokkinis

The overall winner of the day was:

Dumolo: Elenor Blankenstein, Sophie Yu, Amalie Winton, Sonia Polok

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this STEAM project and a big Thank You to Mrs Harrisson, Mrs Duckworth, Yr 9 Tutors and the Y9 STEAM TEAM who were instrumental in the setting up and running of this opportunity.

Hope in a Suitcase

Students also helped organised a donation drive for a charity called Hope in a Suitcase collecting items for children in foster care. We were lucky enough to meet one of their volunteers who will pass our suitcases onto the children who need them.  Thanks to everyone who helped with our Service Learning Initiative it was very humbling to see all of the donations we collected.

Important Dates

Wednesday the 7th of December – Speech Night.

Merry Christmas

Yr 9 has celebrated many successes this year, and the rewards have far outweighed the challenges. The Pastoral Care Team are privileged each day to participate with our cohort’s academic journey. We recognise and applaud just how hard they have worked, and the outstanding effort they have consistently applied. We celebrate their achievements whether they be great or small and share with pride the progress they have made with their learning.

I would like to thank the wonderful members of our Yr 9 Pastoral Team. Throughout the year, they have collaborated to inspire, support, and encourage our students through their Yr 9 year. The creation of opportunities provided for each individual to be the best version of themselves has been wonderful watch, and they have endeavoured to instil in our cohort, the courage and motivation to make an effort, and character to seek and endure challenging tasks.

Lastly, may your holidays sparkle with joy and laughter, and your summer break be full of peace, joy, and happiness. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2023 as our students begin their Yr 10 studies.

Merry Christmas, and best wishes for the new year.

Year 8

Happy Holidays!

As the year draws to a close, Mr Horan and I would like to wish our Yr 8 students and families a very happy and relaxing Summer holiday. While this year has not been without its challenges, our Yr 8 students have overwhelmingly had an excellent year of growth through many opportunities. They have embedded exisiting connections with their peers and made new ones, worked collaboratively with their teachers in a range of settings, and excelled in their personal learning journeys. It has been a pleasure to read students’ academic reports and gauge their progress across many disciplines. It is hard to believe that very soon, in the new year, we will be welcoming students back as the new Redlands Yr 9 cohort.

Secondary School Speech Night

Next Wednesday, we will join together to recognise students’ achievements at the Redlands 139th Secondary School Speech Night, at the Big Top, Luna Park. Please could I ask for your support and request that you reiterate our expectations for behaviour at this important formal event. I have spoken with students at length during our recent Year Assembly and have reminded them that they must be appropriately groomed and attired with shoes polished. Students are advised to be attentive, to refrain from chatting and of course, not use mobile telephones during the event. Thank you for your support to ensure that students behave appropriately so that we can properly celebrate the achievements of our exceptional Yr 8 cohort.

Rock in the Quad

At lunchtime today, students from Yr 7-10 gathered in the Liggins Quad to watch several extremely talented student bands perform some outstanding renditions of rock songs. Well done to the Yr 8’s who showcased their vast talents today!

Year 7

As the year draws to a close, Dr Regis and I would like to wish our Yr 7 students and families a very happy and relaxing Summer holiday. Our Yr 7 students have had a marvellous year of growth through many opportunities. They have had opportunity to establish new friendships with their peers and working collaborations with their teachers. It has been a pleasure to read students’ academic reports and gauge their progress across many disciplines. It is hard to believe that very soon, in the new year, we will be welcoming students back as the new Redlands Yr 8 cohort.

Head of Junior School

It is certainly beginning to feel a lot like Christmas and this time last week, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Stage 3 musical theatre production of Elf which was truly full of the joys of Christmas! As much as I strive to know every student well, there are still times when I am positively amazed by students I thought I knew well but then see them come alive in a different context, as was the case during this production.

The Christmas spirit has continued this week and our K-6 Christmas Carol Service was a very special occasion and the first time we have been able to gather as a Junior Campus for three years.

In this final Note Day of 2022, please take time to read through reminder information about the final events of the term and early information ahead of 2023.

If I do not see you in person between now and the end of the term, I thank parents for their support again over the year and wish you all a restorative and rejuvenating Christmas holiday break, hoping that you can enjoy time with loved ones, a true Christmas gift.

Staffing News

As we finish the term, we say thank you and farewell to the following staff and thank them for their service to our Junior School community.

  • Ms Hannah Patton leaves Redlands after three years as she pursues a different career path as a partnership manager for a corporate firm connected to education.
  • Mrs Lisa Cocks leaves us as she relocates to Perth with her family and commences at Iona Presentation College as a STEM specialist teacher.
  • Mr Brad Hemopo leaves us after concluding his latest contract with us and moves to Queensland next year to continue his teaching career at Nudgee College.
  • Ms Alison Taylor finishes with us after concluding her contract this semester.
  • Gap Year student, Ms Olivia Donoghue leaves us after a wonderful experiential year ahead of her commencing her primary teaching degree at The University of Sydney.

In addition to our leavers, Yr 4 Coordinator and teacher, Ms Melanie Cleary, is taking a year of leave for personal health reasons and we wish her a restful and rejuvenating time ahead of her intended return in 2024.

Associated to this, I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Mr Joel Watkins as the Yr 4 Coordinator for 2023 and Ms Kennedy Proctor will step into the Yr 6 Assistant Year Coordinator role next year too.

I look forward to sharing our 2023 staffing information and new appointments in my ‘Welcome to 2023’ letter to all Junior School families in mid-January.

Farewell, Mr Webber

It would be remiss of me not to also pay tribute to our departing Principal, Mr Stephen Webber, who leaves us after three years of distinguished service. It is hard to measure the impact of just one person but without question, Mr Webber’s extraordinary leadership of our School through the pandemic years will remain firmly etched in the annals of the School’s history. His people-focused leadership is a hallmark of his character and his constant and visible presence on our campus, particularly in assemblies has had a lasting impact on students and staff as was evident in their personal and heartfelt farewell messages to him. On a personal level, I have appreciated Mr Webber’s wise counsel, guidance, unwavering support and friendship and on behalf of the Junior School, I wish him and his wife, Lynn, all the very best as they return to Perth to be with their children.

Anglicare Toys and Tucker

Thank you to all of our community who have generously supported Anglicare Toys and Tucker campaign. As I shared with the students this week, their care and compassion will make such a difference to the Christmas experience for so many children, who are less fortunate.

Yr 5 and Yr 6 – Time to Save Student’s Learning on iPads

As the year draws to a close, we would like to remind families about assisting their children with managing content and files on their iPads. During the term break, Redlands ICT will recall all iOS Apps that are either deployed or managed by the School. While every effort is made to keep data from Apple Apps such as Pages, Keynote, iMovie etc, from time to time this may be deleted and not retrievable. Our strong recommendation is to back up and save any work students have done during the year to ensure no data is lost.

How can students save their work?

The safest way to protect any work on the iPad is to perform regular backups of your child’s device. Any work that is saved in the cloud will be safe when an App is removed. To mitigate the risk of losing any important work, Redlands ICT recommends performing a back of your child devices and that any particular special work is saved in a secondary location.

How do I complete a backup of our iPad?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

As this is our final 2022 Prep Note Day, I would like to wish all our families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and fun summer holiday. This year has been filled with learning experiences that have engaged our students, activities that inspired creativity and collaboration and play that has been fun while connecting our students back with their peers.

It has been an absolute privilege as Head of Prep to observe and celebrate the social and emotional growth as well as the academic development of all our students this year. Every student who walks through our doors inspires and brings me joy each day.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the ever calm and fabulous Mrs Jen Mast for all her collaboration and hard work this year in her role as the PCG Coordinator. Jen has been instrumental in ensuring the messages between Prep and the class representatives are clear and concise. Thank you Jen. On the same note, can I also thank the Redlands House and Prep class representatives who volunteered their time this year to organise social catch ups, forward on messages and in some cases, put some myths to bed by gaining information from the school. Thank you.

As we begin 2023, we welcome Jenny Krallis  (current Kindy White Co-Class Parent) to the PCG Coordinator role.  Both Jens will be Co-Coordinators for a time until Jen Mast slowly moves out of the role. While classes won’t be determined until late January, Jenny and Jen would love to welcome everyone back to the Class Parent role next year.  If you or someone you know is interested in helping, please drop them an email. The first PCG meeting of 2023 will be in Week 3.

Finally, can I please send out a huge thank you to every parent, carer and special friend of Redlands House and Prep for all your support this year. It was a year of returning to normal, a year of reconnecting friendships and a few new ways of reimagining some Prep experiences. Thank you for supporting myself and the staff as we navigated this year. I am a very proud Head of Prep at the end of 2022 as I reflect on the number one reason why we are all here and that is to walk alongside and guide our Redlands House and Prep children to become kind, independent and happy learners.

2023 Staffing News

Mrs Jennifer Jackson, one of our incredible Learning Plus teachers will be taking leave for the duration of 2023. After much thought, Jen has decided that next year she will be spending time with her family. I know you will join me in wishing Jen all the best as she takes this leave. We will miss her, but we look forward to her return in 2024.

We are currently in the process of finding her replacement.

Mrs Lynn Cooper will be taking long service leave for the duration of 2023 as she too would like to spend time with her family and enjoy some down time. Ms Cooper is a Prep school legend, and we will welcome her back with open arms in 2024. Ms Elizabeth Anderson-Gingold will be taking Ms Cooper’s long service leave position. Ellie currently works in Year 1 as the recipient of the Redlands Student Teaching Scholarship.

Ms Nicole Saxby will also be leaving us at the end of the year. We will miss her smile, her professionalism, and her collaborative spirit amongst the Prep staff. Nicole has worked quietly and calmly with One White this year and we can only hope that she returns to us after her travels. As we say goodbye to Nicole, we welcome Mr Nathan Stubbs who will be joining the Prep staff in 2023. Mr Stubbs currently works at St Ives North Public School and is looking forward to getting to know our students and staff.

Prep Games Day is here!!

A message from Ms Longworth

Prep Games Day (tomorrow) is a fun way to finish off the PE year.  Skills learned throughout the year in PE lessons will be applied to game situations on Friday. Students will rotate around activities with their class groups, practising their hand-eye coordination, throwing, aim, accuracy, catching, running, agility, jumping, kicking, strength, power, and tactics.

It is also a great way to finish the year with class friends. We are confident of lots of laughing, fun and working together.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

What a wonderful week we have had at Redlands House. We have very much enjoyed our Junior Sing-a-longs with our families and friends. It was lovely to be able to have families back in the Preschool, and the children were very excited to sing their songs for you. Our Seniors and Transition Gold concert was a big success, it was wonderful for the children to take the stage and what a great performance it was. Thank you to the Music department for all of their hard work and organisation. Thanks also to the Redlands House staff for preparing the children and ensuring everything ran so smoothly.

We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe happy and healthy 2023.

Independant Sporting Association

ISA Code of Conduct

As we move into round 2 of the Summer ISA Sporting Season, we would like to draw your attention to the ISA Code of Conduct for both Players and Spectators. The full document is available on the Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse and we encourage all parents and players to familiarise themselves with the expectations when participating in participating in ISA Sporting competitions.

GUIDELINES FOR PLAYERS

2.1       Once committed to a sport for the season, players must honour that commitment wholeheartedly. This same commitment applies to ISA representation. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

2.2       Players are expected to be modest in success and generous in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion.  (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.3       Players are also expected to acknowledge, willingly and openly, good play by either school. Players should not celebrate the opposition’s mistakes. (Level of breach: 1)

2.4       Players should be positive in their approach to games and should adhere strictly to the rules/laws and spirit of the game.  The referee or umpire’s decision is final, and the Captain of the team is the only one who may ask for clarification of a decision at the appropriate time. (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.5       The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.6       Players shall never resort to violent or abusive language or behaviour or engage in unfair or illegal tactics to gain an advantage.  Racial vilification will not be tolerated under any circumstances. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.7        Players should be punctual and adhere to their school’s dress code.  The home team – and in particular the Captain should welcome the visiting team and its Captain.  At the conclusion of the game acknowledgment and thanks should be given to referees, umpires, officials such as scorers/touch judges and the opposition. (Level of breach: 1)

GUIDELINES FOR SPECTATORS

3.1       Spectators must remember that this is “kids” school sport, let them have fun. It is not the World Cup.

3.2       Spectators are expected to be positive role models. They must behave respectfully and courteously towards players, coaches, match officials and other spectators. (Level of breach: 1, 2 and 3)

3.3       Spectators are not to approach or address game officials or any of the opposing players, spectators or staff.  If a spectator has a genuine concern, this needs to be presented to their own school official who will determine any action to be taken. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.4       Unless invited onto a field/court, spectators must never encroach onto the field/court. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

Thank you to all of our students, parents and coaches for a great term of basketball! It has been fantastic to see our students in action and improving week-to-week throughout the term. A reminder that there is no basketball in Term 1, Week 9. We look forward to recommencing the ISA Basketball Season again in Term 1.

With both teams starting the competition with a 2-2 record they have both placed themselves in a good position to make the top 4! You can see how our teams are doing by going to the Basketball Australia website.

A massive congratulations to our Director of Basketball Coaching, Renae Garlepp, who has recently returned from Guam with a Gold Medal. Renae was the assistant coach for the U15 Australian Girls team who competed in the 2022 FIBA Oceania Championship.

Rowing

The past week has seen our rowing students go through their final round of testing and crew selections for 2022 with students achieving many PB’s along the way, a great reflection of their efforts at training so far this term.

Recently information has been emailed home to all families regarding the training sessions available throughout the summer holidays, a reminder that the RSVP for the December sessions is Wednesday 7 December 2022 and the January sessions is Monday 2 January 2023. Copies of this information can be found on the rowing page of Pulse along with the Google form links listed below:

A further reminder that information regarding the January Rowing Camps has also been emailed to all students and families, the RSVP for this is Friday 16 December 2022 which includes both the Office of Sport registration along with permission on Pules. Tennis

We would like to commend the finalists from NSTA 1, 5, 8 and 14 that played some great matches against their opponents, and we hope all students enjoyed the competition this term! We would also like to acknowledge the students who competed in the 2022 School Boys and School Girls Junior Tennis Tournament last week and produced some amazing results! Isaac Swann and Matteo Stucci placed runners up for the Teams event against Central Coast. The two players also faced off in the Singles event with Matteo runners up and Isaac taking competition winner. We hope the participating students enjoyed this experience and we will look to offering more opportunities like this in the future.

This will be the last week for Summer Tennis training this term with an optional Tuesday morning session offered next Tuesday 6 December for Group 1 – compulsory for TNB players that may make the finals playing the Saturday 10 December. TNB players please make sure to be checking your emails for court locations and information. We will be looking to set up an internal communications system next term for these players as emails on the day of competition can be hard to access.

We hope all players have had a great term of Summer Tennis and we wish you all the best over the holiday period. Please keep an eye out for an email this week or next outlining our holiday program offered the week before Term 1 starts.

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis.

Sailing

Last weekend, our sailors competed in their last Redlands series race day for the year. Conditions were challenging with a moderate southerly, challenging our sailor’s boat handling skills and teamwork as the breeze was patchy on parts of the racecourse. Picket fencing the day (placing first in all races) was sailing captain Oliver Noakes and his team in the Elliott racing. Alissandra Braden & Ruby Gasmus also picket-fenced the day for the Pacers, closely followed by Max Nicholson and Hugo Christy.

Please note that we still have training all this week, and while there is no official training during the holidays, several options exist to sail with RSYS throughout the summer. For more details, please follow this link.

Girls AFL

We are looking at entering the 2023 Term 1 Summer Girls AFL Competition. This would be an optional extra that sits alongside your current summer sport.

We must meet several criteria for going ahead with this competition, including the number of players per team, other sports that students participate in, and players’ experience.

Please fill out the summer AFL EOI form if you are interested in playing Summer AFL.

The details:

Games: Upper and Lower Northshore primarily – possible 1-2 games in the Eastern suburbs.
Times: will be after 1.30pm each Saturday
Competition length: 8-10 weeks
Player numbers: around 20 players per team to be able to go ahead with a team.
Training: training would be mornings or on a Friday afternoon.

If you have any questions, could you let Mr Pryor know as soon as possible.

Music

Have yourself a Merry little Christmas!

This season is one of rich celebration as we find the culmination of another year of learning tying itself up in a musical bow! This week alone we have had our hearts warmed by the beautiful singing of our Redlands House and Transition Gold students in their We Can Sing a Rainbow concert; Junior Carols featuring our Choirs & Jazz Band on Tuesday; Rock in the Quad & Rock in the Garden resounded across both campuses  today; and tomorrow Senior Carols is another rite that tolls the imminent arrival of our summer break!

Next week’s Year 6 Graduation, final assemblies, Prep Presentation and Junior & Senior Speech Day events will provide even further opportunity for our students to share their glorious music with our community!

Seeing our Redlands students rightly proud of their achievements and shining as musicians in all of these end of year events firmly remains part of my ‘why’ as an educator. I am certain our community will continue to enjoy the musical offerings of our students in the week ahead.

Wishing you a safe and utterly refreshing break.

Thank you for a wonderful 2022!

Amy Richardson | Director of Music P-12

Redlands House & Transition Gold Concert

Congratulations to all of Redlands House and Transition Gold for their wonderful concert yesterday in Dunnet Hall. They dazzled us with their beautiful singing voices with dazzling actions, singing I can sing a rainbow  followed by Blue Class singing the delights of The Deep Blue Sea where we met Mark the Shark and his friends singing about how happy they are just being themselves.

Next we had Madame Haverhals’ French classes singing L’arc-en-ciel with an amazing introduction by Jude introducing the song completely in French! Yellow class sang the song Mister Sun and shared how they love playing outside under the golden rays.

Orange class followed with a favourite song at Redlands called ‘Wash your face with orange juice’ which is one that mums and dads may know as Mr Clickety Cane.  It is funny to clean your teeth with bubble gum. It is unusual to fry your egg on a slippery dip. But it is crazy to belly flop on a pizza.

Transition Gold shared how you get to the end of the rainbow by jumping or digging so that you find at the end of the rainbow…a pot of Gold!

Our final song from Redlands House reminded us to live in harmony,  look after the world around us and how important it is to be kind to each other with one of our favourite songs Rainbow, Trees and Tambourines.

Thank you to all the teachers, parents and carers for your help and support for making our concert  so wonderful.

Katherine Moses | Head of Junior Campus Music

Rock in the Quad! Rock in the Garden!

Congrats to all performers in today’s epic Rock in the Quad (Senior) & Rock in the Garden (Junior) concerts! Performances were loved by the hyped masses and

Junior Carols

Christmas Carols filled the  Junior Campus Carols Service last Tuesday with Jazz Band and tutors accompanying some of our favourites like Joy to the world and We Three Kings led by the Junior Choir. Junior Voices performed Carol of the Bells in a wonderful 3 part arrangement!

Senior Carols

Senior School Carols Service (dubbed Fahl-lalala!) is on tomorrow in the Fahl Garden led by soloists from the Senior Choir and accompanied by Concert Bands, String Ensembles and Tutor bands!  Brace yourself for some serious festive fun! Phones (responsibly used) will be permitted for the Carols event for the purpose of reading song words!

Click here to download your SENIOR CAROLS program

Senior Final Rehearsals

Senior Bands, Choirs & String Ensembles are reminded to check in with Pulse & iLearn to manage their prompt attendance at additional rehearsals and call times, ahead of both Carols tomorrow & Speech Day performances.

Speech Day – Wednesday

All performers must be in immaculate Full Summer Uniform with blazer and polished shoes, neatly styled hair and with instrument and sheet music under arm! Morning & Afternoon Tea snacks and bottled water may be brought to the venue in clearly labelled containers.

A reminder as per communications from the school office, Junior Strings and Junior Concert Band Ensembles are to arrive at Luna Park Big Top by 8.00am and Junior Choir to arrive by 8.45am and report to Music Staff.  Further information for school families are in Mr Guha’s and Ms Van de Peer’s respective letters to their sections, distributed two weeks ago.  Secondary School musicians featuring at Speech Day are to arrive and report to Music Staff at Luna Park Big Top by 2.00pm in immaculate Summer Uniform with Polished shoes and neat hair.

Extracurricular Music

2023 Private Tuition

A reminder that all our tuition – ensembles, bands, lessons, etc – automatically roll over from year to year.  Should your child wish to discontinue their Private Instrumental lessons in 2023, please complete the Notice of Change Form on the Music Pulse pages no later than Wednesday 7 December to avoid late notice charges in the new year. This greatly assists us in supporting our casual workforce with work and income guarantees, and we thank you for your assistance to this end.

If interested to know more about Private Tuition or if you think 2023 might be the year that you explore one of our Bands, Choirs, Ensembles and enrichment classes, please reach out to your respective Music Office to enrol via Pulse

Senior Music Locker Clean-out

The time has come to clean out your instrument locker and take all your belongings home for the holidays (dirty socks and crumpled sheets of music included)! The combination padlock must be returned to our Administrator, Ms Hales in person so that she can:

  1. Check your locker is empty and clean;
  2. Mark your name off the list;
  3. Reset the padlock code (NB: this cannot be done without your existing code, so leaving the padlock on the desk means the lock will not be able to be reused.)

Students who do not return the padlock to reception in person by the end of next Tuesday 6 December will be charged $50 to cover a replacement lock, and will not be given priority when allocations are made for instrument locker hire in the new year.

Senior Music Locker Hire in 2023

Please note that instrument locker hire does not rollover to next year and we will be starting from scratch, so if you would like to be allocated a locker again in 2023, please fill in the INSTRUMENT LOCKER HIRE FORM 2023 to be added to the waitlist, and we will contact you when a suitable locker is available for your use.
