Issue 36 2024 Term 4 Week 6 - 21 Nov 2024

From the Principal

One of the distinguishing features of Redlands is our vibrant international community with a diversity of global perspectives enriching students, staff and parents. With over 50 nationalities represented across the School and many of our families recently joining Redlands from overseas, we are truly an international school for local students and a local school for international students.

To strengthen our international connections with schools overseas and open up a myriad of global opportunities for students, Redlands joined the Round Square network of schools in 2023 as a candidate school and hope to receive our official global membership by the end of the year.

Round Square is an internationally diverse network of over 250 like-minded schools in 50 countries on 6 continents that connect and collaborate to offer world-class programs and experiences, developing global competence, character and confidence in students. The schools share an understanding of the hardwired link between personal development and academic success and are committed to preparing students for positive, active and engaged global citizenship.

Round Square schools share a commitment to character education and experiential learning built around six themes, or IDEALS: International Understanding, Democracy, Environmental Stewardship, Adventure, Leadership and Service.

At Redlands, we embed these IDEALS into both the academic curriculum and cocurricular programs. We believe strongly in the transformative value of these opportunities, recognising them as essential for developing students who are not only academically successful but also empathetic, globally aware and equipped to lead meaningful, impactful lives.

Some of the Round Square initiatives enacted this year have been:

  • We introduced the Round Square “Heroes of Discovery” program at Redlands House this year and are rolling it out further across P-6. This program emphasises curiosity, leadership and problem-solving and lays a strong foundation for students to develop courage, responsibility and inventiveness, ensuring leadership qualities are nurtured from an early age.
  • Year 10 Commerce students engaged in ethical dilemmas with peers from other Round Square schools around the world, developing critical thinking and democratic engagement by exploring civic responsibility and political involvement as part of their Social Science curriculum.
  • Year 11 Japanese students examined global gender equity through a Round Square online session on International Women’s Day, enriching their cultural awareness and connecting with students globally to hear their various international perspectives.
  • The Round Square Club was launched this year with a committed group of senior students exploring areas of leadership, service, adventure and inclusivity. Our first Round Square Captain, Sophie Yu, was also announced at the end of last term.

We are planning further involvement with Round Square over the next year through activities such as:

  • Opportunities for students to participate in international Service Learning trips
  • Virtual exchanges with students overseas
  • International online collaborations with students in areas such as Languages, Geography, History and Mathematics
  • A delegation of students representing Redlands at the Round Square Inspiring Voices Conference at Oxford University in the UK in April 2025
  • A delegation of students representing Redlands at the Round Square International Conference in Dubai in September
  • Opportunities for student exchanges with overseas schools

These opportunities and others through Round Square will only further enhance our strong sense of internationalism at Redlands and provide endless benefits for our students.

Redlands Dance Academy End of Year Performance

I know our Redlands Dance Academy students are busily preparing for their end of year performances this weekend and I look forward to once again seeing their lights shine on the stage.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome visiting parents, grandparents, students and carers onto the Senior Campus earlier this week for our Secondary School Open Morning. Students from Year 9 hosted small group tours, supported by staff from our key operational areas, answering questions and providing a wonderful insight into life at Redlands for our guests. Redlands reputation as a leading school of choice for families both nationally and internationally continues to grow. Through personalising each student’s development and growth, our students leave school truly life ready and prepared to adapt, create and thrive.

On Monday evening our Year 8 parents, carers and students joined us for a Gearing Up for Growth session in preparation for Moonbah, our new immersive residential learning experience for Year 9 students. Commencing in 2025, Moonbah is underpinned by our commitment to the development of each student’s personal growth. Living in community and on country at our High Country Campus outside of Jindabyne, students will connect, learn and lead to foster a deep understanding and critical thinking via a rich and varied interdisciplinary curriculum. Through the 9-week bespoke program, students extend their independence and responsibility and are empowered to become the authors of their future selves. From next year, our Year 9 students will have the opportunity to spend either Term 1 or Term 2 in this unique program that will provide opportunities for self-discovery, collaborative learning, building relationships and community mindedness.

It has been terrific to see our Redlands Supporter gear out and about at Summer Sport. Our range has been designed to represent the spirit of our players, teams, supporters and School, whether you’re cheering from the sidelines and stands or supporting from afar. The Redlands Supporter range can be viewed and ordered here with Polos and Jackets available to be tried on for size at our Uniform Shop to ensure correct fit. Please note that this range is for parents, carers, friends and alumni of Redlands, and not for our students. Our Redlands Supporter gear is a community driven program with all profits returned to the Redlands community for investment in community programs.

Uniform Recycling Week has once again proven to be a great success with hundreds of preloved and unwanted Redlands uniforms recycled across the School. Thank you to the many volunteers involved.  Preloved and unwanted sports uniforms and new uniform items can be donated to the RPFA’s Second Hand Uniform Sale through the Uniform Shop.

A reminder to join us for our Community Carols on Sunday 1 December at 5pm at St Peter’s Cremorne. This informal gathering offers a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to enjoy the joy and peace of the season. Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship

Thank you to all members of our community who joined us to support our efforts in raising funds for the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship. With everyone’s contributions we were able to raise close to $200K this year. This includes income from donations as well as net proceeds from events such as Melbourne Cup, RPFA-led Second Hand Uniform Sales and the Year 12 student-led Legacy Gift.

This scholarship will be awarded next year to a successful candidate who will commence in Year 7 2026.

Coralie’s commitment to Redlands has been extraordinary and we greatly appreciate her involvement and personal advocacy in this important initiative.

Sam Power RL 2009, Lecturer in Statistical Science at University of Bristol

We are delighted to share a recent update from Samuel Power Redlander 2009, currently lecturing at the University of Bristol, UK.

During his time at Redlands Sam was one of only five students in NSW/ACT to get a top mark in IB Higher Level Mathematics, and had part of his IB Extended Essay published in the UNSW Mathematics Journal Parabola (Vol 46.2).

Upon finishing his IB studies, Sam was accepted to read Mathematics at the University of Oxford. There he pursued the MMath degree at St Hugh’s College, obtaining a Double First for his four years of studies, alongside numerous college awards and scholarships.

Outside of his studies, he participated in in the Oxford University Australian Football Club. He was also the Head Coach for the St Hugh’s Women’s Football Club, and promoted weekly electronic music events at the O2 Academy Oxford.

After his undergraduate studies, Sam worked in Hong Kong for two years as an Education Consultant, but was soon drawn back to the world of mathematics. From 2016 to 2020, Sam then went on to study for his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mathematical Analysis and Statistics at the University of Cambridge, as a member of Churchill College.

Soon after, he joined the School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol as a Senior Research Associate, eventually progressing to his current role as Lecturer in January of 2024. In this role, he enjoys a mixture of conducting his own mathematical research, teaching undergraduate students, and mentoring postgraduate research students.

“I fondly remember my time at Redlands, making many friends through both my studies and sports (particularly Mathematics and Football, respectively). I also benefited greatly from the formative mentorship which I received from my Maths teacher at Redlands, Dr Gabriel Chircu, who I will always remember as having elevated my view of how exciting the study of Mathematics could be, and who provided great encouragement for me to follow along my current path.”

News and Events

I’d like to share some exciting news! Two of our talented students, Andy Guan (Year 9) and Sophie Wong (Year 7), reached the semi-finals of the United Nations Youth Voice competition last Friday.

Sophie Wong has advanced to the final round and will present at NSW Parliament this Friday. She’ll deliver a prepared speech on addressing the negative impacts of large-scale industrial agriculture while ensuring adequate food supply. Sophie will also showcase her public speaking skills by answering impromptu questions in front of a large audience.

Congratulations to both Andy and Sophie on their outstanding efforts, and best of luck to Sophie for the finals!

Moonbah – Gearing up for Growth Evening

On Monday night we welcomed our Year 8 students and parents to our Moonbah Gearing up for Growth Evening.  It was wonderful to introduce our High Country Campus Leadership Team, share the finer details of the Learning Program and explore the skills and dispositions the students will develop when they move to Moonbah to living in community and on country with each other. After a presentation in Redlands Hall led by Mr Corcoran, Ms Rolon and Mr Atkins, students and parents were able to mingle with a range of staff and Year 10 and 12 students in the Redlands Learning Hub to learn more about ‘the essentials’, ‘the learning program’ and how to ‘live in community’.

Since the presentations, the Moonbah Program page on Pulse has been updated. I invite all students and parents to visit this Pulse page and learn more about the inaugural program commencing in 2025.

Senior Campus Open Morning

Over 250 prospective parents and students toured our campus on Wednesday morning this week. Year 9 student acted as tour guides and ambassadors for Sport, Dance and Drama on the Fahl Garden.

The visitors remarked the maturity of our Year 9 students, praising their warm welcome and the articulate way they spoke about Redlands and their experiences of learning. Mr Corcoran and I were very proud of Year 9 and the way they admirably represented the School.

United Nations Youth Voice Competition

Last Friday, two of our talented students, Andy Guan (Year 9) and Sophie Wong (Year 7), reached the semi-finals of the prestigious United Nations Youth Voice competition. This is a tremendous achievement, showcasing their dedication and passion for global issues.

A special congratulations to Sophie Wong, who has made it through to the final round and will be presenting her speech at NSW Parliament this Friday. In her speech, Sophie will address the negative impacts of large-scale industrial agriculture while offering solutions to ensure an adequate food supply. This is a crucial and timely topic, and Sophie’s ability to engage with complex issues at such a high level is truly impressive. In addition to her prepared speech, Sophie will demonstrate her public speaking skills by responding to impromptu questions from the audience, further highlighting her confidence and composure.

We are incredibly proud of both Andy and Sophie for their outstanding efforts in reaching this stage of the competition. Their commitment to raising awareness of global challenges and their exceptional public speaking abilities are a testament to their hard work and dedication. We wish Sophie the best of luck in the finals, and we look forward to supporting her as she represents our school at this prestigious event.

Sweet Success: Students Harvest Redlands Honey at Beekeeping Club

This week at Beekeeping Club, students joined Sonia, our Rooftop Bees beekeeper, to harvest Redlands honey using the traditional crush-and-strain method. The session began with a delightful taste test of the freshly harvested honey, sparking excitement and curiosity among the participants.

Students then worked hands-on with the honeycomb, carefully placing it into a strainer and applying pressure to extract the golden honey, which flowed into a collection bucket. The leftover beeswax was separated, leaving the pure honey ready for bottling into jars of Redlands honey.

The hands-on nature of this activity captivated the students, who enthusiastically participated and unanimously praised the taste of the honey. This experience not only highlighted the sweetness of the product but also deepened their understanding of the harvesting process and the importance of sustainable beekeeping.

Service

It is now only 34 days til Christmas (which is 5 more Mondays!!!) and we are right in the midst of our 2024 Christmas Drive – “It’s in The Bag.”

This year, one of our main aims is to promote the message that connecting with a cause and truly understanding it is what lies at the heart of service. Service has genuine impact when we move beyond doing a ‘good deed,’ to empathising and understanding.

With this in mind, we would like to share a bit more about the charity and campaign we are supporting this Christmas and why it matters to us.

Share the Dignity is an Australian charity founded in 2015 by Rochelle Courtenay to address period poverty among women, particularly those experiencing homelessness or domestic violence. The idea was inspired by an article Courtenay read about the extreme and undignified measures women in these situations were forced to take to manage their periods. Emphasising that access to sanitary products is a basic human right, she established Share the Dignity to provide essential menstrual products and restore dignity to those in need.

This Christmas, Share the Dignity is running the “It’s in the Bag” campaign, which encourages Australians to donate filled handbags containing essential and luxury items for women and girls in need, particularly those in domestic violence refuges or homeless shelters. Participants can pack bags with items such as toiletries, period products, and personal care items, along with optional extras like a handwritten note to provide a personal touch of love and hope. This campaign not only provides practical support but also aims to restore dignity and self-worth to recipients, reminding them that they are valued and cared for during a challenging time

What Actually is Dignity? Why is it Important?

Dignity in itself is such a complex concept. For us, it refers to the inherent worth of EVERY individual, and their right to be treated with respect and kindness regardless of their circumstances. It refers to the individual’s sense of being able to stand tall and understand their worth, regardless of circumstance. Everyone deserves to enjoy a sense of dignity. We think dignity is particularly important in times of vulnerability – such as homelessness, domestic abuse, and financial crisis – as it nurtures our sense of self and helps us maintain our identity and integrity, which can be so easily stripped away during times of hardship. In these moments dignity can become a luxury rather than a given.

When we are able to honour other people’s dignity we empower them, affirming that they matter and their feelings and experiences are valid. This act of recognition can have such an impact on a person’s wellbeing making them feel loved and instilling a sense of hope and pride in themselves, particularly during hard times.

By giving these bags this Christmas we have the opportunity to make a difference by honouring the dignity of those around us. It reminds us that we are connected in our shared humanity and human experiences and are all deserving of compassion and respect.

Year 11

IB Visual Arts

This Term IB Visual Arts students have been exploring Experimental Approaches to Drawing in order to extend their understanding of mark making techniques and to allow them to become more confident with their own practice. In this task – called ‘Kinaesthetic Drawing’ students were required to allow the movement of their body to be directly involved and evident in the mark marking. For some this was through mapping the physical patterns of yoga poses, others it was swimming strokes and for some it was an opportunity to represent and map the unnoticed patterns the body makes as it moves.

Year 10

Year 10 Camp: Building Resilience and Memories

Last week, our Year 10 students returned from their camp at Myall Lakes National Park, bringing back not only tired smiles but also many wonderful memories. The camp offered a variety of challenges, including hiking, biking, and canoeing through stunning landscapes, as well as the adventure of sleeping in tents amidst diverse weather conditions. The grit and determination demonstrated by our students in tackling these challenges were remarkable. These experiences are more than just moments of fun—they are life lessons in resilience and perseverance that students will carry forward.

All My Own Work Programme Completion

On Monday, Year 10 cohort completed the All My Own Work programme, an important step in preparing for their academic journey ahead. This programme, an essential requirement by NESA for all HSC students, equips them with the skills to maintain academic integrity and avoid malpractice. While not mandated by the IB, Redlands includes it to ensure students gain a deeper understanding of ethical research practices. These skills will be invaluable as they transition into their senior years.

Commercialisation Challenge at Macquarie University

Next week, our students will participate in the Commercialisation Challenge at Macquarie University, an enriching opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills. Today, Ms. Van de Peer and Ms. Green briefed students about the programme’s structure, expectations for behaviour, and engagement during the event.

Students are reminded to:

– Wear full school uniform, including a blazer.

– Bring snacks for morning tea due to limited break times in the morning.

Ms. Green has shared the event schedule and bus timings with students and carers. Please ensure these details are reviewed to support smooth participation in the day’s activities.

Year 9

Schools for Impact

Today, Year 9 attended Sydney University to hear from four grassroots charities to conclude their participation in the Schools for Impact Program. The cohort raised a substantial amount of money across the term which they allocated to a charity of their choice after hearing from them today. It was great to see the students band together to raise the funds and even more impressive to see them engage with the charity’s pitches with curiosity and maturity.

Thank you to Rose Boddy and Sebastian Salz who both delivered excellent speeches to introduce two of the charities; Bandu and JRS.

National History Challenge

The National History Challenge  was open to all students in Year 7-9, and the following students in Year 9 are congratulated for attending weekly lunchtime sessions with Mr Allen throughout Semester 1 to complete an independent research project on a history topic of their own choice.

  • Hugo Burton – received a Green award for his video essay on the persecution and imprisonment of homosexuals in Nazi Germany
  • Tom Beatty – received a Bronze award for an essay on how the United States Air Force responded to flaws in their technology and strategy during and after the Vietnam War
  • Andy Guan – received a Bronze award for an essay on the Benin Bronzes, a collection of sculptures originating from the ancient kingdom of Benin located in modern-day Nigeria, which were taken by the British in the age of colonialism and are currently displayed in the British Museum

Stage 5 Assembly

Part of the Stage 5 Assembly this week was dedicated to recognising the efforts of students who have challenged themselves by participating in competitions in various academic disciplines throughout the year.

Ms Van de Peer presented certificates to the following students:

Tournament of the Minds – Charlotte Boris, Georgia Cavric, Amelie Dewar, Melissa Franco, Roman Jackson, Sophia Liu and Abby Stante

Year 8

Week 6 – If You Can be Anything, Be Kind

This week, I spoke to our cohort about how we can make the most out of our final two weeks of term and really focus on being our best selves as we close out the year. While examinations have finished, students still have valuable feedback to receive, process and to learn from in preparation for Year 9. I encouraged students to: ‘be present’ in feedback lessons, so they are focused on absorbing the valuable advice on personal areas for improvement; ‘be mindful’ so that they are able to process this effectively, without distraction; and ‘engage in forward-thinking’, so they can reflect on how they might apply this to future situations in Yr 9. Above all, I also emphasised my hope that students focus on being kind to each other; kind to their teachers and coaches; and kind to themselves, should they receive a mark lower than anticipated in their examination results. If we can maintain this kindness disposition, then we can embrace the holidays with positivity.

In line with this theme, I reminded students of our annual Tutor awards, where students have the opportunity to nominate individuals in their Tutor group who have stood out for embodying Redlands values. The specific awards students will vote for are:

  • The Little Ray of Sunshine: A student who has demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm, positivity and support for members of their Tutor group.

Share the Dignity Christmas Drive

On Tuesday, our cohort were visited by Yr 11 students who were helping to promote this year’s Christmas Appeal, aimed at supporting Share the Dignity. Share the Dignity is a women’s charity in Australia that works to make a real difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness or doing it tough.

Tutor groups will be working together to bring in items and then produce a bag of essential goods that can go to an adult, teen or mum and bub, to help someone in need for Christmas. In line with our service focus this semester, this initiative will give students another opportunity to think beyond themselves and work towards helping people in need. Remember, student contributions need to be in by Tuesday!

Moonbah Gearing up for Growth Information Evening

On Monday night we held an informative evening to provide students and parents with key information about the Moonbah 2025 program. There was a positive vibe in Redlands Hall and then in the Learning Hub as families moved between presenters to learn more about the program. It was enjoyable speaking to students and parents, and hearing their enthusiasm for all that their term away next year will hold. Thank you to all of the presenters for taking time out of their evening to communicate with the cohort.

You can access all the PowerPoint presentations and detailed information regarding the Learning Program Core and Elective Units on the Year 9 Moonbah page on Pulse.

If you have any questions, which have not been answers in the Moonbah FAW, please direct them to highcountry@redlands.nsw.edu.au

The Scottish Play comes to Life

Having sat their English examination this year on Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, Yr 8 are now enjoying having the time to engage with the play by performing key scenes from the play before working on a project to create a modern adaptation of their key scene. Students from 8B enjoyed getting out onto the Fahl Garden to perform key scenes in the traditional fashion, before getting down to developing concepts for a modern ‘Macbeth’ and then writing modern scripts to fit their scene. Next week, students will be filming their scripts to create engaging modern adaptation videos. Whether it be altering ‘Macbeth’ to become the story of a jealous F1 driver and his race sabotage; using the play to comment on contemporary American politics (Trump); or transforming the play into an homage to Dance Mums, a range of creative ideas are being developed. I look forward to seeing the final videos produced!

Rock in the Quad

On Tuesday, the school was overtaken by the melodious sounds of students ‘rocking out’ over recess and lunchtime at Rock in the Quad. Whilst the weather disturbed the ‘in the quad’ element at recess, the sky managed to clear up for the lunchtime session for all the school to hear, enjoy and mosh to some rockin’ beats!

Congratulations to all the Yr 8s who were involved in rock bands this year and well done on their stage presence and energetic performances, showcasing a year’s worth of contemporary musical collaboration.

Speech Night

The Redlands 141st Secondary School Speech Night is fast approaching on Wednesday 4 December. The evening is a wonderful celebration of all our students’ achievements this year. Please make sure you view Pulse for all the relevant details.

Year 7

Year 7 Success: Celebrating a Fantastic First Year!

Finishing Year 7 positively is crucial as it sets a strong foundation for the rest of your secondary school journey. It helps build confidence, fosters a sense of achievement, and encourages a positive mindset for future challenges. Completing Year 7 with enthusiasm also strengthens friendships and enhances overall wellbeing. To celebrate this important milestone, we will host an ice blocks and Fahl celebration on Friday, 29th November, during Tutor Time. This event is a chance to say well done to Year 7 students for a fantastic first year at secondary school!

Science Focus

In the Y7 science lessons this week, students created their own versions of cells using a variety of materials to demonstrate their understanding of cell structure and function. Some students baked cakes, carefully decorating them with edible ingredients to represent different organelles, while others built detailed models with Lego blocks. A few students used plasticine to craft 3D cells, adding vibrant colors to highlight specific parts like the nucleus and mitochondria. The hands-on activity allowed students to creatively explore cell biology while reinforcing the roles of each cell component. Well done to our creative Yr 7 students and a huge thank you to our incredible Science Teachers for making learning so much fun!

Rock in the Quad

On Tuesday this week, we were delighted to hear Rock in the Quad echoing around the Secondary School during recess and lunchtime. Whilst it might not have been quite in the ‘quad’ in recess, due to some unforecasted wet weather, it managed to clear up for our lunchtime session for all to hear and enjoy.

We’re proud of the work of our rock bands and their enthusiastic performances, showcasing the year’s worth of contemporary musical collaboration. A huge well done to Year 7 students Henry Hughes (Guitar) and Joshua Rantall (Voice).

Shout Outs

Two of our talented Redlands students, Andy Guan (Year 9) and Sophie Wong (Year 7), reached the semi-finals of the United Nations Youth Voice competition last Friday.

Sophie Wong has advanced to the final round and will present at NSW Parliament this Friday. Sophie will deliver a prepared speech on addressing the negative impacts of large-scale industrial agriculture while ensuring adequate food supply. Sophie will also showcase her public speaking skills by answering impromptu questions in front of a large audience.

Congratulations to both Andy and Sophie on their outstanding efforts, and best of luck to Sophie for the finals!

Head of Junior School

In this week’s assembly we spoke about how the final stage of a race is the time when most effort is needed to finish well. Although the summer break is just around the corner, the final days of school are just as important as the first. It’s a time to tie up loose ends, reflect on achievements and leave on a positive note. A key focus this term has been about finishing strong and putting in our best effort right to the end. I encourage all students to reflect on what they want to be remembered for this year and how they will make their final days of the term count.

Daily Wellbeing Clubs have been such a success all year in providing  opportunities for students to experience different things to do at lunchtime. The clubs have always been a safe space for our students to join in many varied fun activities whilst also having a calm environment to explore and develop new friendships with the support of teachers in the room.

The daily Friendship Club continues to be such a supportive space this year for some of our friends to come for help when navigating friendship bumps or when a helping hand is needed to gently assist in the growth of a new friendship. This year Mrs Clinton has demonstrated the importance of peer building and interaction by encouraging the Junior School Wellbeing Leaders to come at lunchtime and help out. Needless to say, the younger students have loved this connection and their friendships are now expanding outside of the Club and into the general playground.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our teachers who have taken a club this year. It is always a great way for staff to connect with students outside of their own classes while doing something they enjoy with the children.

A very big thank you to all the various parents throughout the year who have come in at a lunchtime to share in the clubs with us. This has been very special to us and a wonderful way to connect with the community again.

What’s the Baby’s Name?

As we all know, Ms Knox will be welcoming a new little person into the world shortly and we thought as a Prep community we would help her choose a name for it! As a bit of fun (of course with her permission), you will find pieces of paper next to two baby bottles on the Prep Reception Desk where you can write a name and place it in either bottle. I am sure there be a lot of choice for Ms Knox!

Once again, we gather lost drink bottles, jumpers, hats, lunch boxes and many other wild and whacky things that are left behind in the playground. If your child is searching high and low for lost items, please ask them to check the lost property seat and baskets by the end of next week please.

Secondary Sport

Over the last few years we have seen a number of students excel not just in their sporting endeavours but also academically, by emphasising hard work, resilience, and balance  we allow students to develop a strong foundation of discipline, strategic goal-setting, and balancing their co-curricular pursuits with academic responsibilities.

  • Hard Work and Dedication – consistent practice enhances skills, builds muscle memory, and improves performance over time. Creating a structured schedule ensures time for both sports and academics without compromising either.
  • Resilience and Mental Toughness – learning to handle losses or injuries positively and viewing them as opportunities for growth builds emotional strength. Staying mentally engaged during training and competitions while ignoring distractions.
  • Balancing Academics – students identify peak periods for academic and co-curricular demands and allocate time accordingly. Using efficient study makes academic tasks manageable. Maintaining good nutrition, sleep, and hydration ensures optimal performance in both arenas.
  • Passion and Enjoyment – while excelling requires effort, maintaining a genuine love for the sport keeps students motivated and prevents burnout.

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”

– Pelé

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)

Thanks Coach!

As we conclude another sports term, students are encouraged to foster a culture of gratitude within both the Representative and Non-Representative sports programs. This involves expressing appreciation to their coaches in representative teams, acknowledging supervising staff on Wednesday Sports, recognising coaching staff in Non-Representative sports, as well as showing gratitude to drivers, medical staff, and their foremost supporters—their parents and carers.

Kindly remind your child to take a moment to convey their thanks to coaches, either this Saturday at the final basketball, touch, tennis match or this Wednesday during the last session of Term 4 sport for all our non-representative sports. It was heartening to witness some students last term expressing their gratitude to coaches for their guidance and efforts having coached some of them since the start of the year in various sports.  However, it’s noted that this acknowledgment wasn’t universal across all teams, sports, and individuals at the end of Terms 2 and 3.

In a period when schools in Sydney are grappling with challenges in attracting and retaining sports coaches post-Covid, it is crucial for Redlands to uphold the high standards of coaching across our campuses. A timely reminder to your child would be beneficial, prompting them to personally thank their coaches when they see them on Wednesday. For those inclined to express gratitude in writing, we have sport thank-you cards available at the sports office which your child can come and collect.

On behalf of the Junior School Sport department, we extend our thanks for your continued support in our representative sports program. Please enjoy the video that has been shared previously.

Thank you coach video

Mixed and Girls Basketball Jersey Return

As we approach the conclusion of another successful Term of Basketball, we want to express our pride in the effort and dedication your child has shown throughout the term.

This communication is a friendly reminder regarding the return of the loaned Basketball Jersey. We kindly request that you ensure your child returns their jersey after their final game this Saturday. The Basketball jerseys will be collected at the venues by their coaches. Students will need another shirt to wear home at the conclusion of their game. The replacement cost for our new jerseys is quite high, so we want to avoid billing families for lost jerseys.

Return Process

  • Year 5/6 ABCDEF teams playing at home (Redlands House Courts) for their last game and will return their singlets to their coach on Saturday morning at the conclusion of their game. Boys and girls can use Dunnet Hall change rooms after the games if they wish.

Year 3/4 ABCD teams are playing away.  Jerseys can be returned unwashed (yes you read it correctly as we launder all the jerseys together)  to the sport office so we can launder them and sort them back into sizes on Monday.

  • Year 3/4/5/6 Girls Basketball teams are playing away.  Jerseys can be returned unwashed (yes you read it correctly as we launder all the jerseys together)  to the sport office so we can launder them and sort them back into sizes on Monday.

We emphasise the importance of returning the jersey to avoid any inconvenience. In case the jersey isn’t returned, please note that a replacement cost will be applied.

We sincerely thank you for your cooperation and support in the smooth functioning of our sports programs.

Sports Assembly

Next week we will be having our annual sports awards assembly where awards and certificates will be distributed to those students across sports from across the year. Please see the reminder that sent home on pulse news earlier in the week.

Junior School Sport has become aware of some confusion that exists in parent social groups around our upcoming Sport Awards Assembly with respect to parents and guardians being invited.

Please be aware that only those parents of a child who is receiving an award at this assembly has received an invitation and due to space only 1 parent or guardian from this group and who have RSVP’d to their invitation will have a seat reserved for them with their name on it.

Unfortunately, we cannot have any other parents in attendance at this assembly. Thank you for your understanding.

Rep Sport Summer Sport Term 4

A reminder to check your app each week in regard to your child’s team as our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY                    in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE        any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE                this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and carers are reminded to check the teams each Friday afternoon for changes that may have taken place at training during the week. Students may at times be asked to fill in for other teams occasionally due to absentees etc.

Non-Rep Sport recommencing Term 4

Students were reminded about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport in Term 4. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

Can you please ensure your check your child’ activities to see what sport they are commencing in this term making sure they bring the appropriate gear and or equipment to sport.

Non rep families are also reminded to check the home page of Pulse as well as their individual sport pages on a regular basis for updates.

Drama and Theatre

Extra Curricular Drama End of Year Showcases

It’s all happening in the Extracurricular Drama space. Our end of year showcases have kicked off with a BANG! Our Year 2 Acting students were first up with a wonderfully exuberant improv show followed by a short play set in a museum. Congratulations to our young Redlands performers, your showcase was excellent!
On Tuesday evening we had our annual Extracurricular Redlands Film Festival: It was a wild success. Who could forget the sloth who tried to stay awake to catch his first sunset? Honestly it brought a tear to my eye! We showcased films ranging in genre from science fiction to thriller to animation. The crowd loved it. Congratulations to all our young Redlands film makers – we are all very impressed and can’t wait to see what you do next year.
Our year 3-6 Acting students also performed this week with multiple plays from Alice in Wonderland to Lost in Ikea to a cooking show with a crazy contestant called Nanna Pies.
Watch this space as we bring you more showcase photos and updates each week.

NB: Tickets to our Redlands Junior Musicals are on sale now. You can get tickets on our Drama and Theatre pulse page or Jr Musical tickets here.

We hope to see you there!

Music

Rock in the Quad

On Tuesday this week, we were delighted to hear Rock in the Quad echoing around the Secondary School during recess and lunchtime. Whilst it might not have been quite in the ‘quad’ in recess, due to some unforecasted wet weather, it managed to clear up for our lunchtime session for all to hear and enjoy.

We’re proud of the work of our rock bands and their enthusiastic performances, showcasing the year’s worth of contemporary musical collaboration.

Here’s a sneak peak of the Advanced String Ensemble and selected wind/percussion players in the Pit at the Concourse Chatswood, as we prepare to play at the Dance Academy End of Year concert with some of the numbers. Come see this wonderful event – more information in the Dance Note Day page.
