Issue 36 2023 Term 4 Week 7 - 23 Nov 2023

From the Principal

As we head to the conclusion of the 2023 academic year, I wanted to give updates on some of the key strategic initiatives we have been focusing on this year.

Master Plan

Over the past two years, the School has been working through the different stages of the development of a new Master Plan across all three campuses: Senior Campus, Junior Campus and High Country Campus. Last year staff, students, Board Directors and parents provided input for the creation of a Master Plan brief which detailed the priorities across all three campuses. Earlier this year, this brief was used as a framework and guide for a Master Plan design competition where the School assessed entries from numerous architects before selecting Architectus as the winning architect to deliver the Master Plan.

Over the course of this year, a Master Plan steering committee comprised of key staff, Board Directors and external consultants has been working with Architectus on the development of the Master Plan. We envision that the Master Plan will be completed early next year, and we will be able to share it more widely with our community in Term 2 2024. We look forward to the completion and communication of the Master Plan, as it will provide the School with long term direction on the facility development necessary to deliver on our strategic priorities and fulfill our Redlands Vision and Mission.

Year 9 Experiential Learning Program 2025

Earlier this year, the School announced our new residential Experiential Learning Program for future Year 9 students, commencing in 2025. Redlands has had a long history of experiential learning, with our comprehensive Outdoor Education program running for over 40 years and our current Winter School residential program running for 28 years. Now, aligning with our Strategic Driver of supporting and challenging students to achieve personal excellence through programs and pathways, we are developing a new, expanded Experiential Learning Program for future Year 9 students at our High Country Campus outside of Jindabyne in either Terms 1 or 2.

We truly believe that this residential Experiential Learning Program will have a transformative impact on our students and enhance our Vision of inspiring them to achieve life-readiness and to become well-rounded, confident, resilient and compassionate young adults who are well prepared for their senior years at Redlands and life beyond the school gates.

Over the course of this year, much work has been going on behind the scenes towards the development of this program. Specifically, plans are in place to upgrade the facilities at High Country Campus next year to properly accommodate the Experiential Learning Program; key staff have been visiting and assessing other schools’ residential experiential learning programs that are already in operation in NSW, Victoria and South Australia to learn from them; a staff group has formed this year who are developing the specific aspects of the program; and next week a survey will be going out to current Year 7 students and parents to elicit feedback and questions to help further inform our planning.

We are keen to hear from all parents and carers to get both your feedback on this program, as well as any questions you might have, as these will help us with our communications. You can find more information on the program, as well as the introductory video, here and please contact feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you have any feedback or questions at this time.

Uniform

Last term we were delighted to share our new uniform with our Redlands community via this video and e-brochure and look forward to its introduction from January 2024.  As advised, there will be a two year transition period where current students may choose to wear either their existing uniform or the new uniform.

Over the past month, many families have booked in their fittings for the new uniform and the feedback to date has been overwhelmingly positive. There are still some timeslots available for fittings in the Uniform Shop between now and the beginning of next year and you can make a booking here.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Photo Caption: Our Redlands Dance Academy dancers showcased some very mesmerising and captivating performances at their End of Year Performances last week. Congratulations to all the students who performed and to the Redlands Dance Academy for organising such remarkable events.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome more than 200 parents, grandparents, students and carers onto the Senior Campus early this week for our Secondary School Open Morning. Students from Year 9, supported by our leadership team, hosted small group tours answering questions and providing a wonderful insight into life at Redlands for our guests. Redlands’ reputation as a leading school of choice for families, both nationally and internationally, continues to grow through our focus on each individual student, exceptional teachers and world-class learning programs and resources.

We were also delighted to host Redlands parents and carers from Redlands House to Year 9 on Monday evening for an information evening on HSC and IB where our Senior Studies programs, along with myths and misconceptions around ‘rankings’ and measures of success, were shared. This important session was recorded for those that couldn’t make it.  A link to the presentation will be shared shortly through Pulse.

A reminder that bookings remain open for the Redlands Community Midawarr Arnhem Land Trip scheduled from Sunday 26 to Thursday 30 May 2024. To whet your appetite on what you might experience on this once in a lifetime trip, click here to watch a short highlight video of our 2023 Year 9 cohort and their teachers immerse themselves in this ancient culture.

Our partnership with Culture College inspires and educates through the sharing of unique experiences and the celebration of traditional Yolŋu knowledge systems and customs, all shared in an authentic Yolŋu setting in northeast Arnhem Land. First Nations educators from along the East Coast also teach the diversity of their cultures and customs alongside Yolŋu, threading the stories together.

This is quite literally a once in a lifetime opportunity to deeply explore miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival. To reserve a place on this exclusive trip please complete the booking form here.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Hylton Hobday Redlander 1993

We were thrilled to welcome two Redlanders back to campus recently, both of whom are currently residing abroad.

Hylton Hobday, Redlander 1993, celebrated with former classmates at their forty year Reunion celebration in the Redlands Learning Hub.

Hylton made the journey from the US where he is currently the VP, Partner and CFO at ASC Group Inc, based in the Pennsylvania Region and has been working in Environmental Sciences for over 20 years. His projects have been located in multiple regions across the United States.

He was impressed with recent developments that have taken place at the School, including the Redlands Learning Hub, Adams Centre and refurbishment of Liggins.

Tamae Ishikawa Redlander 2015

We were also delighted to spend time with Tamae who, after eight years away, was excited to see the wonderful new teaching and learning facilities that students now greatly benefit from, which have transformed our Teaching and Learning programs.

Current Year 11 students were fascinated to hear about Tamae’s journey as they consider their future opportunities. After finishing the IB, Tamae studied economics at a university in Japan, and is currently working at a Japanese bank.

While at Redlands, Tamae was involved in several performing arts programs, including dance, musical productions and choir. She still dances regularly. “It’s a very important time for me no matter how busy I am”.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Book Club has two events coming up to end the year:

Mon 27 Nov some Book Club members will be taking a tour of the Jewish History Museum to complement this month’s reading of Mans’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.

Our final meeting and Christmas lunch is planned for Thurs 30 Nov.

Behind the Scenes with RPFA: Meet your Class Parents

Class Parents (CP) play a pivotal role in building connections and fostering a supportive social spirit among parents and children outside the classroom. From welcoming new families, organising class playdates and events, to facilitating communication between the school and families, these dedicated superstars are the backbone of the Redlands community. Follow this series each week to meet your 2023/24 Class Coordinators and Parents, put a face to a name, discover what they do, AND keep an eye out for opportunities to join the team!

Names: Mayumi Staley and Jennie Cadman
Shared Role: Junior School Class Parent Group Coordinators for 2024
Kiddos: We have 8 children between us at Redlands in 2023! Redlands House Juniors, Kindergarten, Year 2 X 2, Year 4, Year 5 X 2. Jen is also a graduate, Redlander 2000.

CP Five with Mayumi and Jen

If you could choose a Class Parent theme song what would be the title?

You Can Count on Me by Bruno Mars

Why did you decide to be a Class Parent?

We decided to volunteer to give back to the School. It’s important our children see us volunteering. We are also here all the time anyway ????

Why would you encourage other parents to volunteer for this role?

The best part is getting to know parents, students and staff at a more in-depth level rather than just the casual hello at the school gates – it becomes a community.

What’s a fun fact about you?

Our brothers finished at Redlands in the same year but we didn’t meet until our Year 5s were in Kindergarten!

If you were asked to write a survival guide for new Class Parents, what would be your two top tips?

???? Find out your teacher’s birthday immediately and pop in your diary

???? Introduce yourself to your class teacher and find out how you can help throughout the year

Parent Power Needed: Join the Team in 2024!

Nancie (featured in last week’s Note Day) is looking for a Secondary School parent to partner with her in 2024 as the Class Parent Coordinator. All you will need is a sense of fun, enjoy people wrangling, a Working With Children Check, and have a spare couple of hours a week. Contact Nancie to have a chat about the volunteer role via the RPFA.

On behalf of the RPFA our 2023 Junior School Class Parent Coordinators Catherine Grinham and Michelle McDonald organised a farewell gift for Mr Guha, the much-loved Junior School Principal who is leaving Redlands after 18 years of amazing service. These parting gifts were presented to him at a farewell event arranged by the School last week. The gift included a 40+ page Photo and Memory Book. He also received two limited edition Wedgewood bronze desk sculptures of a young boy and girl reading, representing the hundreds of children he has helped teach and support over his years at Redlands. A BIG thank you to all who contributed across the School to the collection and shared their beautiful photos and messages which made the book something Mr Guha said he will treasure for years to come. You will be missed, Ari!

Head of Secondary School

Yesterday we welcomed approximately 300 visitors onto the Senior Campus for our Secondary School Open Morning Tour. It was hectic but enjoyable and I really enjoyed spending time with some of our Year 9 students who were Tour Guides, leading our visitors around the School to share their experiences and what makes us special.

Each pair of Year 9 Tour Guides had their own special route through the School, and detailed information about the Redlands journey to share with their guests. They were incredibly personable and caring and wonderful student ambassadors. From Ethan James’ firm welcoming handshake to Eva Fitzhenry’s warm ‘hello’ to Dian Wicher’s explanation of the mixed ability classroom and to Lachlan and Zara’s unpacking of all things cocurricular, all of the Year 9 Tour Guides engaged willingly, openly and with energy.

As the year comes to a close, I am hearing Christmas carols in the Maths classrooms, the tree is going up in the Student Services Centre and plans for the final assemblies of Term 4 are being made. Our Year 10 students have been trained to act as Peer Support for our incoming Year 7 students and our newly inducted Year 12 students are navigating their first round of ‘assessment stress’ (nothing they are not ready for and cannot manage!).

We were delighted by Rock in the Quad today, just like we were awed by the Ballet and Dance students last week. Our students are showcasing their skills and talent across a wide array of areas and genuinely enjoying each other’s company.

We move towards a close to the year that is positive and thoughtful. At the start of the term, I challenged students to remember that ‘other people matter’. We are asking families to support this Christmas via financial donations.

Yr 9 Christmas Challenge

In Week 5, Yr 9 participated in an experience project where we were challenged to improve the Christmas experience for people who struggle to enjoy the holiday season. One of the student-devised pitches was around the concept of gift boxes for women at Bayside Women’s Shelter. While children are typically the sole focus at Christmas time, we wanted to let women know that we see them and that they too are deserving of some luxuries.

We have been confronted by the recent stories and shocking statistics in the media about the number of women who experience domestic violence and abuse. This is an issue that impacts everyone, from every socio-economic background, every cultural and linguistic group and every age. We want to play some small part in acknowledging the situation and turn feeling helpless about it into feeling empowered to act.

To deliver on this project, we are asking for help from the Redlands community. We are asking you to donate so we can create our carefully curated gift boxes and deliver them to women at Bayside. Our boxes will include some of the essentials and some special items to make these women feel valued and provide them with gifts that they most likely wouldn’t be able to buy for themselves.

Redlands will collect the funds on our behalf and then we will use the money to create the gift boxes we have devised. We will then personally deliver the boxes to Bayside.

With thanks,

Yr 9 Redlands students

Year 10

STEAM – Year 10 & Year 7

On Monday and Tuesday, around 50 Year 10 students had the pleasure of assisting Year 7 in their journey as innovators in the 2023 STEAM Day. I have always loved STEAM from when I was in Year 7 as I thought it was such a great opportunity to look deeper and be able to use creativity alongside critical thinking to create a real solution that I was proud of. Therefore, when helping the Year 7 students along this journey, I not only felt extremely old, but so privileged to help them start this adventure as the STEAMer’s of the future.

As a teacher I was able to provide students with knowledge about aspects of their decided issue, waste, and help guide their journey to create a prototype to fix a specific waste related solution. Whilst of course Sophie and I can rant about the facts and flaws of issues such as fast fashion or food waste for a while, that isn’t the most important element of STEAM days. I found that the inventions and creative ways of expressing their designs was something unable to be taught to this incredibly talented and bright group of Year 7 students.

I think it is fair to say, as my time doing STEAM days comes to an end, the world of Redlands STEAM is in the safest hands. Not only was judging my Tutor Group’s pitches one of the genuinely hardest choices I have made recently, but viewing all the presentations in Redlands Hall at the end of Tuesday brought up ideas I think would be wasted if not continued into real inventions.

Thanks Year 7 for the amazing couple of days, and congratulations to Cowper Blue’s winning presentation, thanks to you guys I will be checking the use by date to make sure I don’t waste any food, until your app is a reality!

Peer Support

Year 10 engaged with Peer Support training this week in preparation for 2024. Peer support training brings about numerous benefits, promoting a sense of belonging, improving communication skills and fostering leadership qualities. It creates a supportive environment that enhances students’ interpersonal skills, preparing them for future social and professional interactions. Additionally, the program cultivates confidence and self-esteem, empowering Year 10 to take on leadership roles.

Activities throughout the day focused on what makes a good leader, leadership experiences, working as a team, the importance of clear communication, empathising with the Year 7 experience, what kind of leader am I?, being flexible and adapting to the needs of your group, and setting up the practice of leading. Furthermore, students engaged with ice breaker activities which would be beneficial when facilitating sessions with the Year 7s of 2024.

Year 10 Visual Arts

The Year 10 students have been very engaged and very focused as they have explored experimental approaches to portraiture.

Year 9

Tutor Time This Week

This week, students have spent time looking inward and reflecting on their journey at Redlands so far. These activities are an excellent touch point for students, a way for them to explicitly and mindfully consider what they have achieved (not just in an academic sense) and where they would like to see themselves grow. They have participated in two activities:

1. Redlands UP Project: Capturing a ‘moment in time’ via video, to reflect back on and to see how their thoughts, ideas, ambitions and dreams change as they grow into young adults. Films will be shared at the Valedictory Dinner in Year 12!

2. Writing a Letter to Your Future Self: a powerful practice that invites self-reflection, goal-setting, and personal growth, allowing students to capture the essence of who they are today and providing a glimpse into the person they aspire to become.

Year 9 Tour Leaders

On Wednesday 22 November, we welcomed over 200 prospective parents to tour the school. Yr 9 students were chosen to work in pairs to lead these tours, sharing with our guests what the Redlands values mean to them, what activities they are involved in and what their personal journey at Redlands has been. These students also explained to prospective parents the how they navigate the Senior Campus and the history of the buildings. These students deserve a huge congratulations – they led with engaging positivity, representing the School and themselves with pride, while answering a range of questions with huge smiles. Redlands Dance Academy Concert

An enormous congratulations goes out to the Yr 9 students who took part in the Redlands Dance Academy Performances last week. The dedication, hard work and tenacity that is involved in learning to dance a range of styles and genres was on full display. It was wonderful to witness the growth in the dancers’ skill and the joy and passion that exuded from all on stage. A special congratulations goes to Yr 9 dance superstar Dante Minassian. Dante will be leaving us at the end of the year to pursue his passion and talent as a Ballet dancer at the Australian Ballet School. We wish him all the very best for every success in the future.

Yr 9 Christmas Challenge

In Week 5, Yr 9 participated in an experience project where we were challenged to improve the Christmas experience for people who struggle to enjoy the holiday season. One of the student devised pitches was around the concept of gift boxes for women at Bayside Women’s Shelter.

The STEAM project is a two-day event held next Monday and Tuesday on Level 2 of the Redlands Learning Hub. The theme this year is From Waste to Worth – How can we Transform and Reuse Waste for a Sustainable Future?

The start to the day will begin with a guest speaker, Jo Taranto who will be talking to the students around four themes (Plastic Waste, Fast Fashion/Textiles, eWaste and food waste) and their impact on society, as well as some solutions that have been implemented.

Students will be working through the Design Thinking Process with the help and guidance of their tutor as well as Year 10 students who have volunteered to teach a lesson as well as being mentors for the younger students.

Leading up to the STEAM events, we will be hosting a Waste Audit with the student volunteers sorting, weighing and recording waste data.

Projects like this present a wonderful opportunity for students to examine real-world issues and apply some of the skills that they have learned throughout the year in the classroom. They also present the challenge of working collaboratively with members of the Tutor group to design and communicate a potential solution to a real-world issue.

I look forward to seeing what Year 8 produces from this project next week!

Students Living Redlands Values

During the combined Year 7-9 Assembly on Tuesday, our Service Captains Antonia Morgan and Will Algar presented a number of Year 8 students with certificates for the work they have done throughout the year in supporting members of our local community at Bougainvillea.

Well done to the following students and thank you for your service this Year: Abby Stante, Sahara Nicholas, Ruby Gasmus, Ava Atkinson and Chloe Petering.

Year 7

Yr 7 are Full STEAM Ahead!

This week took Yr 7 into the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), as they were challenged to consider how they might assess, transform and reuse waste for a more sustainable future. The program, which occurred across all of Monday and Tuesday, was titled ‘From Waste to Worth’, and engaged students in progressing through the stages of the design process to propose a solution to issues of waste and sustainability and Redlands.

The two days offered Yr 7 an exciting and informative experience, beginning in a presentation from guest speaker, Jo Taranto, who explored the disturbing levels of waste produced in Australia, and culminated in polished presentations from a selection of four Yr 7 project group finalists, who had each developed successful presentations and prototypes of waste saving technology. The two days were ably led by fantastic, supportive and enthusiastic Yr 10 volunteers and coordinated by our phenomenal eLearning Coordinator, Wendy Duckworth. It was an excellent, hands-on, collaborative and experiential learning opportunity for the cohort. Thank you to everyone who helped organise and support the two days!

A huge congratulation goes out to our three individual award winners, as nominated by the Yr 10 student support:

  • Ruairi MacLochlainn who, for helping his group work together, stay positive and find the best way to present their information, even when they were not totally finished, won the ‘Eternal Optimist’ award.
  • Clementine Roumanoff who, for her passion and commitment to offering consistently creative and innovative ideas, won the ‘Creative Confidence’ award.
  • Seren Guha who, for bringing her group together, ensuring productivity and allocating and helping with the work that needed to be done, won the ‘Expert Collaborator’ award.

Another massive congratulations goes out to our three runners up project groups:

  • The Bubble Barrier: Jason Gong, Ken Osaki, Clementine Roumanoff and Phoebe Sun
  • Traffic Light: Mathew Krapovtnitskiy, Liv Law, Lily Musgrave-Kresa
  • Clothes Library (special mention): Felix Eade, Hamish Hopkins, Lauren Rolfe and Tahlia Stone

And the biggest of all congratulations to our winning team:

  • The Food Log: Natalie Bain, Georgia Grace and Maddy Moore.

Sporting Success – Olive and Otis

Recently, we have also had some wonderful success amongst some of our Yr 7 students in external sporting pursuits.

Olive Ross-Sampson was recently selected to be in the A Division Girls Under 14 Waterpolo team playing for her club, the Balmain Tigers. They competed in the Canberra Cup a couple of weekends past and won the grand final last week! They are now in training for Nationals in January in Brisbane.

Otis Gait, after competing in the U13 Indoor Hockey State Championships last weekend, has been selected to represent NSW U13 State team at the National Indoor Hockey Championships in January 2024. He’s shown massive determination and resilience to get here following some challenging injuries over the last 18 months and is really excited about the opportunity.

Party Time and Farewell to Ms Rothwell!

Despite a busy end to the year, it is still very important that we maintain our wellbeing. In Tutor sessions, groups have been exploring the importance of ‘sharpening the saw’. Sharpening the saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset we each have – ourselves! It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in four key areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. Roseby Red and White Tutor groups certainly took this to heart this past week, engaging in a celebration of finishing examinations, moving closer to the holidays and generally just aiming to support each other’s social/emotional wellbeing and mental health. It was a lovely vibe and there was so much food!

At the same time, across the Redlands Learning Hub, McDouall Blue were also engaging in some wonderful wellbeing activities, showing gratitude towards their Tutor, Ms Rothwell, and enthusiastically wishing her the best for her maternity leave. It was a great display of care with the group organising a surprise farewell party for her and offering her a range of thoughtful cards and tokens of their appreciation for her support for them as a fantastic Tutor. We wish Ms Rothwell all the best for her time away from Redlands and bringing her second child into the world!

A Message from Ms Van de Peer – Experiential Learning Program (2025)

In 2025 students in Yr 9 will engage in Redlands’ inaugural Experiential Learning Program at High Country Campus in Jindabyne for an 8-week residential experience.

Currently, we are busy designing and planning so that our current Yr 7 students can engage in an innovative and formative program that enables them to learn about themselves, each other and the wider world.

As we design and plan for the Experiential Learning Program, we value the feedback of staff, students and families.

As parents and carers of Year 7, we appreciate your participation in the following survey. Please access at this Survey Link.

The survey closes Friday 1 December 2023. Thank you.

NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge Awards

To me, the Arnold Library has felt like the metaphorical heart of the Junior School for all of the time I have been at Redlands. Not just as a repository of information, books and resources that support learning and students’ personal interests, but it has always felt like a calm and inviting space where curiosity and intellectual growth and both fostered and promoted.

Before, during and after school each day, I love seeing our students spending time in the library whether it’s browsing through the thousands of books, reading, learning, playing board games together, being creative with art and craft or just chatting with friends. This community hub is also a space that we hold regular staff professional learning sessions and numerous parent gatherings too.

Hence, with all of this knowledge and supported by our incomparable Library team of Mrs Wiebe, Mrs Clark and Mrs Benstead, it is not surprising at all to me that we will present a record number of 61 Gold Premier’s Reading Challenge Awards (4 years of completion) and another record 17 Platinum Awards (7 years of completion) this year, demonstrating exceptional commitment over their entire primary schooling, which also captures students’ efforts who have moved from other schools in NSW. Our library team love what they do and as well as our Junior School Arnold Library, at Redlands we are blessed to have an equally inspiring P-2 Lucy Hill Library. Well done to every student and staff member involved again.

Platinum Award winners: Elysia Angus, Harrison Bird, Tara Clarke, Juliette Cortes, Luca Cowlishaw, Aidan Donnelly, Hamish Gurney, Charlie Hutchings, Raj Jhingan, Jonah Krallis, Sophia Moriarty, Joshua Rantall, Mark Rolfe, Kirrily Stone, Kenzo Takeda, Jennifer Todd and Alexia Tsacalos

Yr 6 Graduation Assembly

Yr 6 families will have received an invitation from Ms Proctor welcoming them to join us for our Yr 6 Graduation Assembly on Tuesday 5 December, commencing at 2pm in Dunnet Hall. This is an important milestone in the cohort’s educational journey and we are delighted to invite parents again to this special occasion.

Christmas Card Workshop – Yr 9 Experience Project

On Tuesday, we welcomed a group of Yr 9 students to lead a Christmas card workshop with some of our Yr 3 students. The Year 9s are realising an idea they pitched in Week 5 around creating curated gift baskets for the 21 women at Bayside Women’s Shelter for whom Christmas will be particularly fraught this year.

They were tasked with considering vulnerable groups this Christmas and decided to zoom in on women seeking shelter due to unsafe conditions at home. The students felt that while children are often the focus of Christmas drives, they wanted to show the mothers that they too are deserving of some Christmas cheer. They have been consulting with Bayside and the women in their lives around what would be suitable to put In their boxes.

The Yr 3 students lent their creative flair and really enjoyed connecting with the Yr 9 students, many of whom shared fond memories of their time in the Junior School.

Our Yr 9 students are still shy of their target to raise $2,000 for the 21 baskets they have personally curated, will purchase, pack and deliver.

If you would like to consider supporting their worthy idea by donating to their GoFundMe page, they would be greatly appreciative.

Greenlands Day

Greenlands Day in our Junior School was a festival of sustainability led by our Environmental Leaders. Students enjoyed participating in the Swap Shop at lunch, which promoted the reuse of items, and a ‘Sow and Grow’ where students planted marigolds in a self-watering container they made. Students embraced the challenge by minimising the use of lights, air-conditioners, and SMART boards, while also bringing waste-free recess and lunch.

Students in class also made a ‘Pledge for the Planet’, which encouraged students to commit to a specific sustainable action. Congratulations to 3 Red, who won the class competition by implementing the most sustainable actions throughout the day. It has been fantastic to see the growing commitment and enthusiasm of our students to make our school and wider community sustainable.

Smart Watches

As per the ICT Responsible User Guidelines which students and parents sign each year, please be reminded that, as well as mobile phones, there should be no communication between students and parents using smart watches during school times. Students found using them will have them taken away and handed back at the end of that school day and may not be permitted to bring them in thereafter. Thank you for your support of the School’s guidelines.

Anglicare Giving

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in our Prep and Junior School receptions. It is also the final countdown for bringing in gifts to support families in need in Sydney this Christmas through Anglicare’s Toy’s ‘n’ Tucker Campaign. Thank you for your generous support as we once again support knowing the positive impact donated gifts will make to so many in need. Please remember to make sure all items are new and remain sealed.

We have an earlier collection time this year, so we need to get our gifts in by Friday 1 December in order for them to be boxed up ready for collection on the following Monday morning. Any families who are around after school on that Friday afternoon and would like to give a helping hand, please drop on by. We will start in Prep and move to Junior School.

Christmas Mufti and Junior Campus Carols

Next Tuesday 28 November, we are looking forward to holding our annual Junior Campus Carols Service in Dunnet Hall for students and staff.

We will also be getting into the festive spirit and wearing Christmas mufti. This can be as simple as wearing a traditional Christmas colour, a splash of tinsel, a Christmas themed t-shirt, a Santa hat or Nativity Character costume. Students are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation to support Anglicare.

Emotional Intelligence and Regulation

A Message from our Counsellors

We are excited to share the highlights from our third and final session of the Big Hearts Project, where we delved into the intricacies of understanding how our brains respond to stress and continued to build on the valuable lessons from the previous week.

Exploring the Three Fs: Fight, Flight, and Freeze

In this session, the students actively engaged with a thought-provoking video that explored the three fundamental responses to stress: Fight, Flight, and Freeze. You can watch the video here. We took the discussion beyond physical danger, emphasising everyday contexts that trigger these responses in children. The goal is to empower students with psychoeducation, enabling them to comprehend their brain functions and navigate their emotions more effectively. Understanding these reactions allows them to identify their responses and access their “smart brain” to address challenges constructively.

Bunny Breathing: A Simple Tool for Emotional Control

One of the highlights of the session was the introduction of “bunny breathing.” This delightful technique encourages students to envision a bunny in the garden, taking three quick sniffs through their nose and exhaling slowly and deeply through their mouth. This simple yet powerful breathing exercise serves as a valuable tool for regaining emotional control when feeling overwhelmed. We encourage you to explore this technique with your children and discuss its effectiveness in managing emotions.

Practical Strategies for Emotional Responses

In addition to these activities, we engaged in discussions about practical ways for students to respond to their feelings, considering the various emotional responses. For example, when students find themselves in a “fight” mode, such as yelling at a sibling, we explored constructive alternatives to help them respond to those emotions effectively. We encourage you to ask your children about their personal experiences and insights regarding the strategies they might be able to implement.

Apple Watches in Prep

A gentle reminder to Prep parents that students are not to wear or bring any type of smart watches to school. If there is an emergency or your child wishes to communicate with you during the day, they can do so from the Prep Reception phone under the supervision of Mrs Alfonso.

Secondary Sport

Being fueled by fire in the realms of sports, especially for teenagers, involves harnessing setbacks as a catalyst for growth and success. The Journey to athletic excellence is riddled with challenges but it is how one responds to setbacks that defines their character and ultimately propels them forward.

Throughout the Sport programs at Redlands, teenagers must embrace setbacks as an integral part of the learning process. Every missed shot, defeat or injury is an opportunity to learn, adapt and improve. Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, they should be seen as a stepping stone toward mastery. This shift in perspective transforms adversity into a source of motivation, igniting a fire within to prove oneself and overcome the obstacles in the path to success.

Resilience is a key component of being fueled by fire. Teenagers need to develop mental toughness, understanding that setbacks are temporary and can be overcome with determination and perseverance. Building a strong mindset involves cultivating self-belief, setting realistic goals and staying focused on the long-term vision even when facing immediate challenges.

A supportive network is crucial for teenagers to navigate setbacks in sport. Coaches, teammates and mentors play a pivotal role in providing guidance, encouragement and constructive feedback. By surrounding themselves with positive influences, teenagers can draw strength from the collective energy of those who believe in their potential.

Channelling these setbacks into motivation requires a commitment to continuous improvement. This involves analysing performance, identifying areas of growth and actively working on refining skills. A growth mindset, characterised by a love for learning and belief in one’s ability to develop, empowers teenagers to view setbacks as opportunities for self-discovery and enhancement.

‘Being fueled by fire works either way, it can burn you or it can drive you, the choice is yours’

Redlands Cup

Over the weekend our Redlands sailors participated in the Redlands Cup Regatta ran out of Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. We hosted a record number of schools and sailors, with competitors attending from Wenona, Ascham, Riverview, and St Aloysius. The day featured exceptional conditions, with the morning brining in a light westerly, converging to a mild north easterly in time for finals, with gusts up to 23 knots! Providing a variety of challenging, fast, and fun conditions for all competitors. We had 2 separate fleets with 23 sailors on Eliot 7s and 14 sailors on Pacers. On the Elliotts, we had 4 Redlands teams that for many were experiencing their first regatta format of racing. This regatta allowed great opportunity for these sailors to hone their racing skills, teamwork, and tactical knowledge across the day of very close racing. The exhilarating racing ended with a three- way- tie, with boat 3 consisting of Lachie, Viv, Ken, Dylan, Lucas, and Josh winning on count back. Our Pacer fleet performed outstandingly as well and faced fierce competition from some of the top sailors in the state, with 2 boats making it into the gold fleet final and 4 boats into the silver fleet final.

NSW Sabot State Titles – Round 1 – Toronto Amateur Sailing Club

A special mention as well to Max Nicholas, who could not attend the regatta as he was competing in the NSW Sabot dinghy state titles. In the tough, choppy conditions on lake Macquarie he ended up placing 3rd out of 42, a stellar effort. Special mention to Thomas Beatty as well, who after the Redlands Cup drove straight down to Canberra to compete in the ILCA 6 state championships over the weekend, competing against a solid fleet of sailors featuring some of the most highly skilled competitors in the country.

ISA Round 5: Wrap up

This week, we had the majority of our teams playing at home alongside a few byes. These byes enabled a large group of supporters to spend the sunny Saturday out at Macquarie, supporting other teams within the program. It was great to have the sideline support of our players alongside many parents. This led to a successful day of games, with for the first time, Redlands defeating Oakhill across all Boys fixtures. Our Girls Senior 2nds played out of their skin, narrowly going down against Oakhill 1sts Girls, an unreal performance.

Coaches have nominated the following players for stand out efforts for Round 5.

Players of the week:

  • Rowan Petersen
  • Harrison Joseph
  • Hugo Scott
  • Ethan James
  • Jamie Rogerson
  • Charlie Amm
  • Sienna Harris
  • Alex Symons
  • Olivia Price-Pontifex
  • Sofia Vincent
  • Sela Tea

Upcoming games for Round 6 have a handful of teams travelling by bus to their fixtures. Please read through your fixture details carefully. Goodluck for this Saturday.

Upcoming Round 6 fixtures are the final games this term.

General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2023 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:
  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • We have been lucky enough to have a relatively dry winter and to start the summer season, we use a number of fields that are multi-purpose and all weather.
  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

A reminder that all key information for the season has been uploaded onto the Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse, if you have any additional questions, please reach out to the appropriate Sports Administrator listed at the bottom of this page.

Sports Prizegiving Assembly

Both Mr Sharma and I would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who made this week’s Sport prize giving assembly a success. The students’ enthusiasm, dedication and outstanding performances over the course of the year have truly made this event memorable. Congratulations to all the award winners for their hard work and exceptional achievements. Their commitment to excellence is commendable and sets a high standard for others to follow. We also want to take a moment to acknowledge those who may not have received an award. Your effort, sportsmanship and determination have not gone unnoticed. It is your passion and commitment that contribute to the overall success of our Sports program, be it our Non-Representative program or our Representative program. Thank you for being an essential part of our journey, and let’s continue to support and uplift each other in the spirit of sportsmanship for Redlands Junior School Sport.

Please feel free to view the following links to see the opening highlight and the closing reflection video. Please download to view in high quality. Note it may take a few minutes to download to your device.

Thanks Coach!!

As we conclude another sports term, students are encouraged to foster a culture of gratitude within both the Representative and Non-Representative Sports programs. This involves expressing appreciation to their coaches in representative teams, acknowledging supervising staff on Wednesday Sports, recognising coaching staff in Non-Representative sports, as well as showing gratitude to drivers, medical staff, and their foremost supporter – their parents and carers.

Could you please remind your child to take a moment to convey their thanks to coaches, either this Saturday at the final Girls Basketball match or next Wednesday during the last session of Term 4 Sport. It was heartening to witness some students on Saturday expressing their gratitude to coaches for their guidance and efforts, having coached them since Term 1. However, it’s noted that this acknowledgment wasn’t universal across all teams, sports and individuals.

In a period when schools in Sydney are grappling with challenges in attracting and retaining sports coaches post-Covid, it is important for us to uphold the high standards of coaching. A timely reminder to your child would be beneficial, prompting them to personally thank their coaches when they see them on Wednesday. For those inclined to express gratitude in writing, we have Sport thank-you cards available at the Sports Office which your child can come and collect.

On behalf of the Junior School Sport department, we extend our thanks for your continued support in our Representative Sports program. Please enjoy the video that has been shared previously.

Thank you coach video

The final round for Girls Basketball is this week and we wish those students involved the best as for most of them this will be their final time representing Redlands in Junior School Sport. Below are a few key dates coming up for your reference;

  • Saturday 25 November is our final round for Girls Basketball. Basketball singlets will be collected on Monday 27 November due to lack of access to change rooms at venues.
  • Your child’s Term 4 Summer Sport (Non-Rep and Rep Sport) will continue with the final date for Wednesday Sport being 29 November.

Music Incursion

Students in Kindergarten to Yr 5 were fortunate to experience an exciting incursion last Thursday. Featuring our very own violin tutor Mrs Sywak, Jaga Band performed traditional folk songs on various Ukrainian instruments. Students were surprised to learn that the Cimbalom has 78 strings! The workshops provided a unique experience, exposing students to diverse musical traditions in a truly authentic way. We thank Ms Sywak and her band for visiting us and teaching us about Ukrainian Strings.
